The Cullen family has a lot going on currently, among those things, is the fact that the boys don't have either of their parents for guidance, so if you're interested in taking on one of these roles, we would love to hear from you!

I don't anon but awhile back (12 hours ago time stamp on my screen) you asked for curious anons.
Your love of and advocacy for Rolemaster is well known.
You likely don't mind games with lots of rules.
So, I'm curious: Do you have any experience with any of the Palladium Megaverse system games like Rifts, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness, Robotech, Ninjas & Superspies, Heroes Unlimited... ?
That whole branch of gaming has sadly eluded me! I know of their reputation but have yet to actually sit down and read any of them. Purely based on their reputation I can actually see a lot of that weird eighties design I love in RPGs, so like I would probably find at least something to vibe with in there!
Now I have sort of interacted with those games via one degree of separation, since Mutants in the Now (cool game) is explicitly inspired by the author's first experience in RPGs being Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness, and while it of course seeks to modernize and clean up a lot of the Megaverse system's quirks, it maintains some of its idiosyncracies (like, as far as I've understood, combat and skills effectively running on two different systems?). Anyway, Mutants in the Now is great and I would actually love to see similar treatments of old obtuse RPGs with some modern sensibilities to make their rules presentation a bit easier to understand.
Anyway, one of these days I'll actually sit down and read Heroes Unlimited. Actually, there's a game that would undoubtedly benefit from the Mutants in the Now treatment, seeing as that one's also heavily about table-based character creation.

Rifts of horror! This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we look at Beyond the Supernatural (1987), Palladium’s horror RPG that anticipates a bunch of mechanics and lore that would be important for Rifts and the Megaversal system. Richard Corben on the cover, Steve Bissette doing tons of interiors, this books is worth it for the art alone.

Possibly the stupidest reaction to the Wizards license shenanigans was the idiots who said “Oh now I hope people will look into all the other great RPGs”.
But…there aren’t any. The only other RPG system worthy of mention in the same breath as d20 without a sneer or at least an embarrassed laugh is Storyteller, and it’s not for remotely the same kind of game. Something like GURPS, BRP, or Megaversal is just “d20 but clunkier and nobody knows it”. Something like Fate or Amber Diceless not only has the “nobody knows it” issue but also is almost explicitly marketed to and made by douchebags who think they’re too good for d20.
I don’t want to play those games. I don’t even want to play 2e Pathfinder or 4e D&D. I want to play a system that marries detail with elegance, that’s not so concerned with “balance” that no class is really unique. And for that, something in the d20 family—Pathfinder for sword and sorcery, True20 for basically any other genre—has absolutely no competition.
Maybe Kobold Press’s thing they’re working on will do it, though since they seem to be touting it as for people who like 5e, I doubt I’ll get the detail without sacrificing elegance that draws me to Pathfinder 1e, and they’ll probably go the samey-samey route (goddamn wizards have the same attack progression as barbarians?!). Oh well. Guess I’ll have to do it myself.

Tomorrow I start GMing my first Savage Rifts game, I'm excited.
I'm a long time Rifts fan, it was a fundamental RPG for me as a child (as well as many other Palladium games) however I haven't played it in over two decades because of just how much I don't actually like playing in Palladium Megaversal (Designing? Yes. Making Characters? Yes. Playing? Nope!)
So tomorrow is a session zero for my first Rifts game which will run for a few months, the characters/players are:
??? the Royal Frilled Dragon Hatchling, the player is new to Rifts and, I think, to Savage Worlds.
Cazador the Anti-Monster, the player is new to Rifts, well versed in Savage Worlds.
Ferryn the Four-Armed D-Bee Power Armor Ace, the player is somewhat familiar with Rifts and somewhat new to Savage Worlds.
Chuck the Rhino-Buffalo riding Grackle Tooth Barbarian Tundra Ranger, new to Rifts, well versed in Savage Worlds.
??? the Dogboy Mind Melter, character is familiar with Rifts but not at all familiar with Savage Worlds. This guy is also the only person that is a complete rando (never met him before he joined the game)
Hopefully we'll have time to dip into some mechanics as well, and to acquaint the players I have set up a quick in-media-res encounter where they've been ambushed by a coalition patrol that jumps them while they are trying to enter the Federation of Magic which will lead to a Chase scene with some SAMAS just to get a brief familiarization with the system.

Les êtres - peuple vélane
Tumblr media

As dumb as this might be, I think one of the existing RPGs in the marketplace that does this well is Rifts and other Palladium megaverse games. It might not have a lot to recommend it otherwise, but Rifts classes are very Rifts classes:
Do you want to drive a shiny mech with one big gun that's sort of laser resistant? There's a class specifically for that.
You want to be a humanoid doggo with psionic powers that hunts psionic and magical beings on behalf of an oppressive government? There's a class for that.
Do you want to be superhuman from super steroids, but you will die of old age before the campaign ends? There's a class for that.
And then once you bring in the supplemental material there's things like Psi-Druids in Psi-Scape and the Vampire Hunting True Atlanteans with Tatoo Magic.
One thing I like about D&D's list of classes is that some of them are very specific archetypes. Paladin, Warlock, Druid, Bard. These are very specific takes on certain archetypes. Even some of the "generic" once are actually very D&D specific takes on those generic ideas. Rogue, Wizard, Cleric, all have some very specific D&D-isms.
This is why I think other fantasy RPGs that contain classes would do well to distance themselves from D&D. I'm not saying make your character classes completely generic. Instead, make your classes very specific but in ways that differentiate them from D&D.
How does your Knight or Champion class differ from D&D's Paladin? Is your nature magic-user also a weird shapeshifter like in D&D? Why? Now everyone knows book wizards are cool and not specific to D&D, but how is yours different from the D&D Wizard?

Welcome to the Megaverse, folks. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we take a look at Palladium's Rifts. Introduced in 1990, Rifts is like all of 90s nerd culture smooshed into one gonzo RPG. Mixing genres with wild abandon it is perhaps the ultimate form of the age old comic shop game “Who Would Win in a Fight?” Sorcerers and aliens and superheroes and biomechanical aliens and interdimensional beings and mutants and knights and the four horsemen of the apocalypse and mechs and more all rub shoulders with each other here, pushing each new sourcebook further over the top, so don your Glitterboy armor, pray to your gods and dive in. I hope you like explosions.
