Your mother-in-law once called you the beating heart of the Underworld.

It was a startling thing to hear from Persephone — she who had forsaken her mother's name to marry the God of the Underworld; she who the Earth weeps frozen tears for in her absence; she who has made a dark spring bloom here with just her presence.

The Underworld already has a heart of its own. It thrums with a steady, distant pulse, like the distant drum of a song for soldiers fallen in battle. It is in the shadows that move with purpose, and the chill of death of once warm bodies wandering the halls of the House of Hades and engaging in idle conversation about how they died as if they are merely discussing the weather.

The quiet hum of eternity.

You wonder if she simply sees a bit of herself in you. You were once a nymph of the grassy plains above before Death. Now you are a bride of the Underworld, who has founded a home in this realm of ink-black rivers and whispering shades, its gilded halls and blood-red roses, its ceaseless churn of souls. You walk these corridors not as a mere visitor, nor as one damned, but as something precious; as Persephone is.

Or maybe she simply thinks too much of you. Places you against the greater portrait of the Underworld and all its hellish circles. You have always seen yourself as something more minor, though no less significant. The portrait of a lover, rather than something belonging to the whole of the Underworld; Prince Zagreus’s consort, chosen and beloved.

And not only his.

The scent of laurel and iron is familiar when Megaera finds you first. She is leaning against a cold obsidian pillar where you turn a corner in the hall, caught in your daily wandering of the House of Hades. Her whip coils lazily around her hand, and you have felt the touch of those fingers too often to worry about what that hand is capable of against your beloved prince. You know Zagreus well enough to understand that even he takes some pleasure from their semi-daily spats.

Her golden eyes are alight with amusement when she catches you.

“Looking for someone?”

Her voice is smoke and steel, the kind of teasing only she can pull off — sharp enough to wound, sweet enough to make you crave more. It's a delicious rasp, one that pulls you in.

"I thought you were working," you say softly, meek even in your approach. Under Megaera's gaze, you feel like a deer caught in the headlights. It's a delicious feeling, like flames licking at your skin.

"Tisiphone is dealing with your fool of a husband, sweetling," she muses, reaching out to brush your hair out of your face. Her fingers drift, pinching your chin playfully. "Had it been me out there, Zag wouldn't be coming home in time for supper."

Before you can answer, a weight settles against your back, a touch cold as the space between stars. A hand, deathly pale yet soft in its tenderness, trails over your wrist before curling around your fingers. Megaera raises a brow as she lifts her gaze to the newcomer.

Thanatos does not need words. He never does. His presence alone speaks volumes — the weight of inevitability, of endings — pressing into you like the certainty of a final breath. And yet, there is warmth in him, one you have come to know intimately—a paradox of comfort in the arms of Death himself.

“Zagreus is coming,” he murmurs, voice quiet as the rustle of the Fields of Asphodel. “He was waylaid.”

“Waylaid,” Megaera echoes, smirking. “That’s one way to put it.”

You tilt your head up as you feel Thanatos shift, his golden eyes gleaming under the torchlight. He is beautiful in his quietude, just as Megaera is beautiful in her storm.

"Were you helping him again, Than?" you inquire.

It has been a long time since aiding the Prince of the Underworld in his escapades was seen as some form of treason by Hades. Even then, Thanatos still averts his gaze, his grey skin flushing with a dark shade like the murky waters.

"Helping is a generous term, dear," he mumbles.

Megaera snorts.

Their bickering is dry, almost entirely deadpan. There is none of that theatrical flair of Zagreus arguing with his father for eternities, but it is no less entertaining for you to watch. You've learned to take delight in the sharpness of their words, the furrow of their brows. In a way, it is strangely domestic.

You cannot help the little grin that tugs at your lips as you watch them in front of you. The laugh that tumbles out of your mouth is entirely accidental, and you squeak as two pairs of golden eyes snap to you.

"What are you laughing about, little flower?" Thanatos muses, his voice soft and utterly smitten.

"Isn't it obvious? They're laughing at you," Megaera scoffs, though it lacks in her usual malice.

Suddenly, the scent of wine and pomegranate blossoms floods your senses.

It comes before you even see him. You close your eyes, basking in the scent of it as if it were the spring that you have not felt in a lifetime. Beside you, Megaera and Thanatos fall silent.

Then, there he is: breathless, grinning, battered from the inevitable chaos that follows him everywhere, the floors of hell burning under his feet. His underworld-forged armor bears fresh scrapes, his knuckles bruised from the skirmish, but his smile—his smile is for you.

For all of you.

"There is your husband," Megaera drawls.

Zagreus is panting when he reaches you, still dripping in the blood from the River Styx. You have learned to disregard the viscera, delighting only in the way his hands reach—finding yours, Megaera's, brushing against Thanatos's in an unspoken promise.

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Zagreus breathes. “Got a little distracted.”

"Distracted, he says," Thanatos deadpans.

Megaera rolls her eyes, but she lets him pull her closer. Thanatos sighs but does not resist the touch.

Death, treachery, rebirth; how odd for a maiden of the Earth to surround themself with. But you have learned like the goddess before you that love tends to find creatures like you in the strangest of places, like a stubborn dandelion blooming through the cracks of a cobblestone path.

You beam, lifting yourself up on your toes to press your lips against your husband's cheek, then your two other lovers. Their hands are cold like the touch of Death and unbearably warm like the flames of Asphodel, and you stand at the very center of it—something that was once warm and breathing and now is not; beloved in your death as you were in life.

"Shall we have our supper together now?" the bride of the Underworld asks.

And like any damned creature in love, the Underworld listens.

3. Who's your favorite character?

longtime followers have been plagued by my xigbarposting for the past year and a half. i sincerely think he might be the most interesting character in the series right now (though obviously that's really subjective!) in terms of what we know about him, what we don't know, how he interacts with the themes of the story, the potential directions his arc could take.

and on top of all that he's just fucking weird. like, all the angst and Themes and Implications etc and he talks like a teenage surfer in a middle aged man's body. compels the HELL out of me.

11. Do you have any headcanons for them?

oh, millions and millions and millions. i think he has personal beef with santa claus. in all his lifetimes, he has earned himself a permanent place on the naughty list. so no matter what vessel he occupies, no matter where he is on Christmas Eve, santa finds a way to give him a piece of coal. (also, he calls him "santy claus", not like Jack Skellington does, but like a villain in an old christmas movie. he sees him and is like "heyyy, if it isn't santy claus!" and santa goes "YOU")

12. A character they haven't interacted with that they totally should?

im hesitant to say that anything Ought to happen in KH in the future—i think that just leads to disappointment—so i'll just say that i think a lot about Xigbar meeting Megaera. like, neither of them knows who the other is, they just start complaining to each other over martinis, commisserating over how dumb it is when heroes think they can just go rushing into danger like they're indestructible, and also how hard it is to take care of long hair.

I started watching Dungeon meshi a few days ago (and I started the manga), and Hades 2 reawakened my fixation on the games.

(Potential spoilers for Dungeon meshi?)

So seeing the Fanart of Hades characters as Dungeon meshi characters has me gnawing on my enclosure. Falin Hypnos, my beloved.

That's said I keep thinking of an au for WMFTD where Y/n is in Falins' role and Hypnos is in Marcille.

All this boils down to dragon Y/n and necromancer Hypnos being even more obsessed devoted and in love with one another. :) (You brought me back even though the ones we love most told you not to, I came back wrong, but I know I still love you. You did the unthinkable, and now I am forever indebted to you. You are mine, and I am yours.)

As for the other characters, I think Zagreus would be Laois (brotherly bond and instead of food, his thing would be filling Achilles codex and fishing), while not fulling matching characters I think Thanatos would be in Chilchuck role, and for Senshi... I'm not sure. You could put Meg there not because she necessarily fits as Senshi but to keep her with Zagreus and Thanatos, a knight, maybe? I was thinking of putting Achilles in Senshi's place because it just seems fitting. (And the Angst potential)

But yes I love that line between devotion and obsession because that line might be thinner than love/hate. Also don��t cross that stuff out! That is the goooood shit. 🤌

As for the role for people to play:

Zagreus

Zagreus as Laois fits really well, methinks. It works bc part of the reasons Zag left the house was because he felt like he didn’t fit in.

I think with Y/N getting nom on and leaving Zagreus behind would only increase that feeling of isolation for him.

especially if the others kinda blame him for what happened. ( also maybe the dragon could be a hydra? so in place of feathers, y/n ends up with those horns things? And fangs? )

Maybe Achilles’ codex could still be greek monsters along greek gods and Zagreus having his own personal one for all the different kinds of fishes and the many ways to cook them.

If it was up to Zagreus, they would eat fishes for every meal. The others veto it very quickly.

Thanatos

I actually he would be a great fit for the chilchuck role. Both of them would much rather keep work and personal life separate.

also while Thanatos can fight and fairly well, he is not a skilled/trained combatant like Meg or Y/N would be.

so letting him have a role where he focuses on overall safety and solving puzzles would really let his natural skills shine.

also since y/n isn’t a healer, it would help Hypnos to have someone who also has the skills and patience needed for healing spells.

also I think the fights between Zagreus and him about not being reckless and learning to trust the eachother could be interesting.

Megaera

She could fill in for the Namari/Shuro role. She just didn’t leave the group since she had personal reasons to want to stay ( but it could be interesting if she did leave after Y/N became a sandwich bc the whole episode with her was one of my favorite)

especially if she ends up getting her sisters to help find y/n

it would also help bc while Zagreus is learning how to fight, the lost of skills and knowledge of combat after Y/N got nibble on would be huge blow to the group.

It also possible she felt some guilt for what happened to y/n as well but still blames Zag which could have some fun tension/fights.

As for the senshi’s role, I love the idea of it being achilles, but if I may suggest another character, I think Dusa would be a good fit for the role.

She already shown to be super helpful and has skill in domestic tasks along with being an outcast. Like the group find her and she ends up helping out by showing Zagreus how to de-bone and cook the many different fishes. Along with dealing various monster and gods since she lived in the dungeon for so long.

She would also be a friend of Zagreus while being a neutral third party, something the group desperately needs.

Achilles just wouldn’t be able to stay calm or listen if he lost his son. He would likely get everyone killed along with himself before saving Y/N. Especially if Pat is no longer in the picture.

So maybe…

Tall man Pat and Achilles adopted little Y/N, who might have elf or something else in him but no one knows for sure. As y/n get a little older, his parents began working in the dungeon together, leaving him with Persephone and baby zag. Y/n would start studying fighting skills so he could join his parents sooner.

Something happened, monster or demon and it left Y/n alone with baby Zag, hiding until his parents found them.

So Patroclus and Achilles takes Zag in and they grow up as brothers.

Somethings happened to Patroclus and Achilles, the only thing found of them were ruined gear along with Achilles’ bloody and torn codex. maybe that was part of the reasons the brothers decided to go down there. To try get some answers.

I think hypnos would be unsure at first but seeing the deep pain Y/N’s eyes would make him agree. Also only because hypnos totally thought Y/N as a great friend, nothing more. Nope. He definitely doesn’t get jealous when he caught Meg staring at Y/N a few times.

and he totally doesn’t cozy up to y/n whenever he got cold in the dungeon. Or share more snacks with y/n or fuss over Y/N more when he is doing the healing magic.

They formed the group and everything seemed to be going well.

Then y/n became an ‘all you can eat special’ and the journey began.

And like Hypnos might be going a little crazy bc he just lost his best friend, someone he knew as a boy then as a man and he just really wanted his best friend back. That was all.

Then they finally got y/n back and hypnos knew he was being clingy but y/n didn’t to mind, even letting hypnos hold on to him for far longer than appropriate and hypnos just didn’t want to let go. Maybe they share quiet, gentle kisses when alone together, promising to talk more when they got out of the dungeon.

Then shit goes sideway.

Hydra!y/n is huge, powerful, quick moving and terrifying. With dozens of little hydra following him around. ( kinda like the harpies kinda did with Falin.)

But he seemed to recognize Hypnos, he touched Hypnos’ chin like he did before they shared those kisses. And he was able to say Zagreus’ name.

Also lol imagine poor hypnos during that shirt ripping part with y/n.

So Hypnos can totally bring Y/N back to normal. Totally. He is not crying thank you very much. No, he didn’t want a tissue, Dusa but thank you.

And yeah lol. Thanks for letting me ramble lol.

“ IT’S ALRIGHT, MEGAERA, THEY WERE ONLY SCARED.” Words sinking heavy on her chest, only to be muttered with broken defeat, eyes glued to the hands she keeps on her lap because she doesn’t think she can look up to Megaera and face the way she looks at her. Being burnt by the hands of the very people she is trying to help is one miserable thing, having the fury speak to her in such tone is another. For a split second, a distant memory flashes right in front of her eyes, sitting frozen still in the worn-out couch in their new home in Washington D.C. She still remembers the way her mother stood, arms folded in her chest with a piercing gaze she’s made no effort to hide, her rage not caused by Bianca- still, she’s the only one who is scared of it. Guardami, Bianca, she’d say, in a voice she’d try to keep quiet. Those kids, are they the ones who did this? 

Now, Bianca is not an eleven year old kid anymore, but she still carries her hesitation, and she still carries her guilt. The only difference is that now her hesitation doesn’t come from a place of fear and cowardice, now it comes from a place of understanding and acceptance. Though, the element of shame is new as the first time she’s felt it, and she has no doubt it will follow her till the day she dies.  “ It was armageddon out there, they were just trying to survive. With all the shadows and stuff they thought I was...” They thought I was one of the monsters, but her lips purses into a thin line instead of finishing her sentence. They apologized afterwards, when Bianca withdrew the darkness and revealed herself, apology after apology as they brought a son of Apollon to treat the burns she’s had from greek fire- it should’ve killed her. And it would, if she couldn’t act in time. She didn’t trust them to heal the wounds they’ve caused, so she rejected the help to save a bit of dignity and return to the underworld, letting the shadows take her home. Why would you leave, anyway? The voice inside her head is chastising, but it’s right. Don’t you know this is your home, Bianca?

She shakes her head, unwilling to think more about it. She tilts her head to gesture to the glass bottle of nectar that stands on her desk, hoping to at least soothe the pain she is in, the pain she is trying to hide with a clenched jaw and gritted teeth.  “ Could you pass me that bottle, please? ”

working on a hades wip, angsting zagreus and his canonical lack of door KDHDKDHSJD. was supposed to be maybe 4-5k words but everytime i think that it ends up blowing up far past that :/ this is already 7k and i still have a scene and a half to finish off. anyways this happened to coincide w a massive megzag kick im on so take a few hundred words from my wip <3 rated m just be warned bc hadesgame always does this to me

“I thought I told you to be quiet,” Megaera scolds, pulling away, and Zagreus gasps for breath. “You don’t have a damn door, Zagreus. The louder you are, the higher the risk of getting caught. As you pointed out, we’re not meant to be doing this.”

“You pointed it out first,” says Zagreus, glad that his voice comes out more-or-less steady. And then, coyly: “And doesn’t it reflect well on your talent if I can’t help but—”

“Zagreus, I will leave you here.”

“It’s not like it’s my fault I don’t have a door,” Zagreus says, and it comes out sharper than intended. But it’s difficult to keep up a flirty, positive attitude, faced with Megaera’s…Megaera-ness. “If you really were worried about it, we could’ve gone to your chambers instead. Since you’re so much more trustworthy and deserving of a door.”

“You think I’d let you in my personal chambers?” Megaera scoffs. “Don’t kid yourself. Now, enough of this—I don’t want any of your childish gripes.”

Childish. Kid. Senselessly, the words grate on his nerves. And so does being so carelessly dismissed.

“Look, I can take a little degradation, if that’s your thing—” it seems like it must be Megaera’s thing, if not really Zagreus’ “—but I really don’t appreciate all this talking down at me. You know, I technically outrank you.”

“So you’re pulling rank now, is that it,” Megaera says, low and scathing. “Well, Prince Zagreus, if you wanted me to treat you like an adult, you should’ve acted like one first.”

His title feels like a mockery in her mouth. Zagreus glares. His blood still burns, but in a heavier way, now. “I was under the impression that it was your job to make me grow up,” he snaps. “Any immaturity of mine is only a reflection on your poor performance.”

“Don’t you dare talk to me about my work performance,” Megaera snarls. “I’m Overseer for a reason. I earned that position through my own hard work. And what are you? A willful layabout, ungrateful for his coveted place in this House, granted it only through his parentage and nothing more.”

Silence. Zagreus’ feet flare with a flash of light, white-hot as his anger; praise the gods for fireproof bedding. Megaera would never let him hear the end of it otherwise. And isn’t it lovely that this is where his mind roams, fleeing the words that strike too close to home.

When Zagreus doesn’t respond, Megaera’s mouth twitches in an almost-smirk. “Nothing to say to that, huh,” she says, back to almost cordial now that she’s won. “Told you I’d shut you up, one way or another. Now.” With one hand, she reaches back down, and traces a line down his hip with her fingernail. With the other, she picks up her whip. “Unlike you, little man, I don’t leave a job unfinished. Let’s see how long you last.”

The answer to that, as it turns out, is not long at all. Zagreus trembles under her hands, and her mouth, and her whip. They’ve done this a number of times now, but he’s still not used to how intense it feels, compared to his own touch. Nonetheless, he tries to hold himself together, wanting to draw this out just a little longer—and, though he would never admit it aloud, wanting to save some scrap of face before Megaera.

“You’re being obstinate,” Megaera murmurs. “Always so damned stubborn. Just come already, Zagreus.”

And, with a moan, he does.

His feet burst into flames that lick up to his calves. His back arches against the bed, mind going deliciously blank. His awareness narrows to where Megaera’s skin meets his own; to where he and Megaera are the only two people in the world.

When he comes back to, Zagreus realizes that Megaera’s hand is pressed over his mouth. Firmly, but not painfully.

“Meg,” Zagreus pants, once he’s recovered his breath enough to speak. Her calloused palms are rough against his lips. “Let go.”

It takes a moment for Megaera to comply. When she removes her hand, she lets it drop to Zagreus’ waist.

“You were nearly shouting,” Megaera says softly, by way of explanation.

“Can’t help it.” Zagreus lets himself sink back into his mattress, feeling pleasantly loose-limbed and aching. “Not with you.”

“Tsch. I don’t want your flattery.” Regardless, Megaera starts moving against him, and the too-soon stimulation makes Zagreus hiss a breath through his teeth. “How about something more pleasurable for the both of us instead.”

She leans down closer to him, until their lips are brushing. Her periwinkle hair falls like a curtain around Zagreus’ face; he can hardly breathe.

“Stay like this,” she orders, the words pressing straight into his throat. He can almost taste her hot pink lipstick. “This way I’ll just swallow all the sounds you make, door or no door.”

Zagreus shivers. How can he refuse?

Dead Royalty AU Drabble: Solo yo...(TRADUCCIÓN)

Angustia- POV de Zagreus - Hades está muerto permanentemente- Zagreus reflexiona sobre su relación y decisiones, básicamente.

los primeros dias fueron muy tensos.

no por la falta de ruido, para nada, Zagreus y Hades habian dejado no solo el lobby hecho un desastre, pero gran parte de la casa estaba en ruinas para cuando finalmente la pelea termino, se necesito no solo el apoyo de las shades que ya habitaban la casa, sino de las del exterior.

tambien fue asi como se corrió la voz de lo que habia pasado ese dia, llegando a cada rincon del Tártaro, Asphodel, Elysium y, finalmente, el olympo.

todos estaban espectantes, temiendo ciertas reacciones. hubo algunos como Sisyphus que estaban sorprendentemente bien con la situación, Teseo obviamente no creyo que fuera verdad, Meg...ella deseaba que no fuera verdad. Thanatos no lo podia creer...¿realmente lo hizo?

pero en cuanto mas tiempo pasaba, mas se establecia como un hecho. Hades se habia ido.

y Zagreus lo habia matado.

el Inframundo estaba temeroso de lo que esto significaba ¿cómo alteraría esto el orden natural del Inframundo?¿quien tomaría el lugar de Hades?¿sus hermanos sabían de esto? las preguntas corrian como murmullos entre los renovados pasillos, incluso cuando Zagreus oficialmente se habia convertido en el unico en disponer de la posicion de su padre.

Zagreus era oficialmente el nuevo gobernante del Inframundo, del Hades. y eso era...inquietante, incluso para el.

no solo por que la posicion que ahora tenia antes pertenecia al hombre que mas odiaba--a su padre, sino porque nunca penso que llegaria a ese punto. Hades nunca lo vio como un heredero viable(ni penso el tener otro por no arriesgar a que fuera como EL) y por lo tanto nunca lo preparo para esto...

..nunca lo preparo para nada en general..

Zagreus encontraba su propia falta de arrepentimiento como una mala señal, el MATO a alguien, Mato a un DIOS, pero sobretodo mato a su propio Padre...pero no podia llegar a sentir algo al respecto.

no cuando lo unico que le generaba pensar en su padre era frustracion, rabia, tristeza..

recorrer los pasillos y aún escuchar el eco de su potente voz mofando sus intentos de salir del Inframundo..o sus duras palabras cuando fallo en sus tareas..

pasar frente a su mesa y aun sentir una prescencia pesada pese a estar vacia, una sensación que lo hacia sentir pequeño, tonto, indigno...

y como olvidar todas las veces que lo vio a los ojos a lo largo de su vida, siempre enojado, siempre decepcionado, cansado, harto.

Zagreus recuerda como el tenia esa mirada cuando lo mato por ¿que?¿la cuarentena vez? y ver el ODIO puro en sus ojos.

por su propio hijo...

pero si recordó algo que su padre le habia dicho relacionado a su vinculo, si se le puede llamar asi.

"solo la muerte es tu familia. muerte y yo. ve acostumbrandote a ambos"

"..y aqui no hay nada mas...tu solo me tienes a mi, yo solo te tengo a ti"

Zagreus no entendia, no entiende y nunca entendera el porque su padre lo mantuvo vivo tanto tiempo si planeaba tratarlo de la forma que lo hizo ¿esperaba un hijo diferente?¿lo conservo por amor a Persefone?¿como un recordatorio?¿un castigo? no estaba claro.

Zagreus sabia que de haber sabido que su padre lo hubiera tratado de la forma que lo hizo toda su vida, hubiera reconciderado la idea de volver a la vida, una parte de el deseaba hacer eso en sus huidas algunos dias.. simplemente no salir del rio.

al menos estaria fuera de la casa. al menos frustraría a su padre. habria ganado al final.

...¿porque Zagreus se sentia mal?..

¿porque sentirse mal de matar de una vez por todas al dios que hizo su vida mas difícil una y otra y otra vez sin pestañear?¿porque?¿por una misers oportunidad de que las cosas serian diferentes si Persefone volvia?

si realmente las cosas hubieran cambiado entonces, solo significaba que Hades siempre pudo cambiar....pero no pensó que valiera la pena hacerlo POR EL...

y ahi estaba Zagreus, pensando si valia la pena cambiar por la esperanza de algo diferente.

pero nunca lo fue antes. no lo fue cuando el era niño, no lo fue cuando el era adolescente, y menos ahora que era un adulto. siempre fue lo mismo..

y eso lo hizo sentir FURIOSO.

¿porque debia ser EL el que cambiará en primer lugar cuando era HADES el problema todo este tiempo?

No...no valia la pena...ya no.

para el final de ese año, todas las imágenes referentes a Hades fueron destruidas o sacadas de la casa y del Inframundo en general. los pocos vestigios del dios quedaron reservados para sus adoradores en el mundo mortal(que ironico).

ya sin la imagen de su padre acechandolo, Zagreus se sintio mas ligero, mas seguro. igualmente ahora tenía muchas cosas con las cuales distraerse y centrarse(papeleo....yey).

mientras el caminaba por los renobados pasillos de la Casa, Zagreus sentia el aura general de precaución a su alrededor. si bien antes de por si las shades tendían a ser cauciosas en su presencia, ahora era un nuevo nivel de inseguridad general.

era similar a como se comportaban los trabajadores con su padre, en cierta forma.

talvez finalmente estaban llendo de nuevo por el camino de la normalidad, al estatus quo. bueno, talvez menos para algunos dioses, Zagreus aun tiene que leer todo el mensaje de Hermes y, quiera o no, hablar con Zeus al respecto.

Thanatos incluso parecia preocupado por esto, aunque Zagreus conocia lo suficientemente al dios para darse cuenta que no era especialmente eso lo que lo estaba preocupando, podia ver que habia mas bien algo de culpa en la forma en la que hablaba de la recurrente... situación. aun con todo lo que Zagreus intento para asegurarle de lo contrario.

Meg fue mas directa, dijo lo que Thanatos, lo que los de la casa, diablos, lo que todos los que realmente les importaba Zagreus querian decir.

"deseamos haber podido haber hecho algo o ayudarte de alguna manera antes de que hubieras llegado a este extremo...pero estamos felices de que estes bien ahora"

Nyx le habia dicho algo similar, mas disfrazado, pero podia ver el remordimiento en su cara. Meg tenia un aire similar al se Than, pero mezclado con miedo. no miedo a Zagreus, sino miedo al futuro Zagreus.

pero ella tenía razón, ahora el estaba bien.

no genial, pero el estaba bien.

después de todo, lo unico que lo detiene ahora, es la muerte y el mismo, lo unico que tenia.

Megaera knows well her place in the Underworld. She understands the shape of her responsibilities, the walls of her limits, how she fits within them. But things always shift when someone else gets involved—even Thanatos, who is as dutiful as she.

So add Zagreus to the mix, and things really get complicated.

I think part of the problem with the Sisyphus side story/quest that makes it sit Not Right once you read up on mythology is that Sisyphus is just not as well developed as a character?

All of the other characters/side quests have a clearly defined, emotionally compelling goal or motivation. Zagreus wants to help out Orpheus & Eurydice and Achilles & Patroclus because we see them as charming characters who were dealt a cruel hand by fate. They are characters who are suffering, strangely grieving their loved one in the afterlife, a place where you would think grief wouldn’t still be an issue. But both Achilles and Orpheus were also somewhat responsible for their fate or are somewhat flawed!! Orpheus failed to save Eurydice the first time. Achilles is too afraid of how the fates might further fuck with him to “risk it all” - he’s willing to live out his afterlife unhappy if it means (he thinks) that Patroclus is well (his true failure is failing to realize Patroclus would never be happy without him, ugh the romance, the angst).

Whether or not we think Achilles or Orpheus are to blame or if we think they were just dealt bad circumstances, both of them have flaws and are not able to help themselves, both by their position as not being very powerful in the underworld AND due to being stuck in their own despair. This makes them interesting characters - they feel like people. It is so human to be caught in our own despair, and they’re caught in despair out of a deep love for another. We root for them.

Meanwhile, Sisyphus obviously has flaws but the game’s narrative doesn’t allow us to really confront that? Sisyphus doesn’t seem repentant. It seems like Zag and the audience are meant to sympathize with Sisyphus - yeah, megaera is so mean (good at her job). Yeah, Thanatos is so harsh (good at his job of like, taking people who should be dead to the afterlife, ok). This lack of confrontation about Sisyphus’s past is partly, I think, because he’s not a resident of the House of Hades. We don’t get a lounge nectar-drinking scene which is one of the ways characters get to personally share backstory and develop in the game. Instead, Zag/the player are told his backstory secondhand and it isn’t questioned. (If I’m wrong: I’ve seen video clips but haven’t played this yet so feel free to correct me!) But also, Sisyphus seems weirdly content in his lot. This is probably to make his situation as a tortured soul in Tartarus not as disturbing and to make him a helpful NPC, but his connections to get goods and his cheerfulness are jarring once you remember that oh, this asshole killed and tricked a whole bunch of people to get where he is today, including chaining up our best bro/bf Thanatos.

So I get that SGG have this theme of (in my reading of it at least) “these despairing or flawed characters are not irredeemable and with a little help and effort, broken bonds can be mended or put on the right track for healing” in Hades, but the way they set up Sisyphus doesn’t do this theme justice compared to the other side quests/characters, thank you for coming to my ted talk

Tl;dr, Sisyphus and his storyline don’t confront his flaws like the other characters, which is strangely less developed and out of place compared to the other characters.
