Okay, hold up. I was thinking about how similar I find Meg and Raoul in the ALWverse. Both are brave, sweet, inquisitive, and over all they want Christine safe. They even look a little alike in a lot of productions, with hair often being the same sort of blondish color.

What if....drumroll...they're uncle and niece? What if Madame Giry and Phillippe fell passionately in love in their youth? What if Madame Giry...is La Sorelli in the ALW verse?

Shut up and lemme think this through.

When Sorelli finds out she's pregnant, she's disillusioned by Phillipe's reaction. He insists she marry the first decent single man he can find, and settles on his family's accountant, Jules Giry. He's a kind but older man, and dies a few years into the marriage.

Now I need to plan a fic where I can bring the whole crew together.

Maybe Christine and Raoul move to the de Chagny estate after leaving the Phantom's lair. Philippe is infuriated by their elopement, but can't find it in him to turn his back completely on his baby brother.

Christine struggles to fit in under his cold dismissive eye and the haughty society around her. What she can't know is that Philippe isn't quite as heartless as you'd imagine. When he sees this young woman from the opera house, he can’t help but think of his own daughter just a few years younger. A daughter he's never known outside slipping in late to a show and seeing her lead her line in the corps de ballet.

He may also envy his brother his willingness to marry the woman he loved despite what it might mean for the family name.

Madame Giry learns when to use their situation to her advantage. When the Phantom demands an increase in his salary, she persuades Philippe to at least convince his brother to act as the opera's new patron, if he himself is still too cowardly to regularly attend like he used to.

So when the opera house closes in the wake of the Don Juan disaster, Madame Giry turns to him again. His daughter is now out of a job. While he may be too much of a hypocrite to ever acknowledge her as his, surely he doesn't want her to suffer the fate many attractive young unemployed girls in her position do.

To her surprise, he invites them into his home. Being around Christine and hearing her reminisce fondly about her best friend Meg suddenly makes him determined to get to know his daughter as much as he can without telling her the truth -- Madame Giry is right in that he's too afraid to face that.

So mother and daughter show up with whom they describe as a composer who wants to open a new dance school and theater with the Girys. He goes only by the name of Erik. He's a brilliant but aloof man, probably because what looks like a stroke or some such injury. One half of his face the skin seems pulled in too taught, almost paralyzed. It's almost as if the skin isn't real, instead a mask to try making him look like anyone.

(Sorelli was a dancer in a particular traveling carnival when she was a young woman, and was so incensed by the cruelty around her that she left, determined to find a serious career for herself on the stage -- but not before releasing that poor boy from his cage).

This Erik stares too much at the new Viscountess de Chagny. Yet he's also surprisingly insecure when some of the aristocratic men in their society begin taking notice of Meg. The pretty, peppy dancer hasn't the first clue how to behave properly in society, and that there are men ready to take advantage. Philippe also notices and struggles not to be too protective.

So what happens when Raoul notices for the first time how much Meg resembles his sister Roberte when they're standing next to each other? What of Christine's terrified conviction about who this Erik really is? What of Erik yearning to watch over her once more, his beautiful angel, his life -- dammit, must this damn Dauphin So-and-So keep looking at Meg like she's steak tartare?

And what of that despite the years that have passed and the bitterness and guilt between them, there may still lie a deep love between Philippe and La Sorelli?

She's got Luna Lovegood vibes. Huge staring eyes, odd little ticks and mannerisms. She tried to share all the Norwegian and Swedish fairytales her father taught her and the other girls thought they were weird and freaky. Except Meg because Meg is awesome. But there's still been a little disconnect between Christine and Meg. Like Meg still doesn't fully *get* all of her little oddities, and resigned herself to that fact early on. That's why they're such good friends. Meg is cool with just letting Christine be odd. Befriending Christine was an excercise in "Wow, you're kinda weird 😄😊".

I absolutely cannot accept any other headcanon for Christine Daae except that she's just. A really fucking weird person. Like, still very nice and polite, a bit shy. You'd like her if you met her. But you talk to her for a few moments and you're like, "Oh! Okay! You're the weirdest bitch I ever met in my life!" I fully believe all the other dancers found out about the whole Situation she got involved in with the Opera Ghost and were just like, "Mm, yeah, that checks out."

If anyone cares to know my secret to enjoying LND i just tell myself it’s one of Erik’s many fantasies of a better life Christine. Raoul is a bumbling idiot, Christine chooses him, all of his less favorable qualities (murder and more!) vanish, he has a little boy with a beautiful voice that is a perfect amalgamation of him and Christine and everyone pays lots of money to see his creations on a big stage. It’s even canon (proof: don jaun triumphant having the main character covered by a dark cloak.. because Erik is the true casting of the character) that he still keeps some of his defining traits such as his inherent misery and horribleness. But he still must be seen as somewhat of a hero of course! (Trying to save Meg, which he would literally never do in reality.) (Being a morally better person than Raoul which is literally just not true)

muse a that owns a pretty little flower shop and across the street is hardcore tattoo shop where muse b works at and muse b is utterly in love at the sight they see across the street where muse a tend for their flowers every morning and fate decides to screw up muse b and the two finally meet one day Muse A is a kindergarten teacher very loved by their students. They had realized there’s a kid in her class who always forget to bring materials and is usually lonely and sad. To know what’s going on, they meet the kid’s parents, only to realize the kid is being raised by Muse B, the kid’s single uncle/aunt after their brother and sister in law passed away in a car accident. They don’t know how to raise a kid or what to do to make things better, so Muse A volunteers to give them some tips and make sure the kid will move on and be the once happy kid they know the kid can be. Muse A teaches Muse B simple things and visits them often, feeling their heart melt whenever they see Muse B acting in a fatherly/motherly way, and doing their best effort to be the best parent they could be, even when sometimes they feel about to give up.

Muse A goes to the countryside on summer vacation with her family as a small child. They don’t like it there very much, and are extremely grumpy about it. Then they meet Muse B, who’s been living there all their life in a house next door to the vacation home. The two become inseparable friends— running barefoot through tall grass, playing pranks on everyone, picking wild strawberries, building a hidden hideout so they can hang out there.      Then Muse A is taken away back to the city, and the two are devastated, pining for each other’s company for months after the separation. Years pass and they forget that summer. They’re now grownups, and Muse A is a successful business owner in the city, while Muse B takes up an artistic job ( musician, painter, poet, etc. ) near his home.      So one day, a bad breakup leaves Muse A heartbroken, and when their work goes downhill, they decide they need a break and go to the countryside. In the same rental vacation home from all those years ago, they spend their days trying to chill. Bad memories and nightmares wake them up from sleep and they take a walk through the grounds around them when they hear music//see someone?? They follow everything to their old hideout, where Muse B, too, has been spending a restless night in need of inspiration.      Muse A watches them for a while in secret, but then something scares them or they trip on something, and the two just go Whoa, hello..?! and Muse Boffers their hand to Muse A…. and then realizes that birthmark//scar on their hand looks familiar??  Muse A has been to various clubs around where they live, always gambling in the world of one night stands and fake love. One day, Muse A goes to party at a new place further away from where they live. They meet Muse B who has a dangerous aura around them, Muse A feels their arm slink around them as they dance together. The night involves shots, continuous drinking and flirting. Muse A & B end up having a night together but Muse A never expected Muse B to shoot somebody in front of her the next morning.

 gimme a plot where muse a is this cute shy little thing and one day they’re going to ride the bus home but it’s super full and only two seats are left, one next to some woman on her phone and one next to muse b who is really tough looking and has a ton of tattoos and basically scares the shit out of muse a so they go do sit with the woman and ask if that seat is taken and the woman goes off on them, and is just being really rude and muse b over hears and notices how cute muse a is blushing and has this really really strong urge to protect them and so they step in and tell the woman to calm the f down and offer muse a the seat next to them, and then they start talking and it’s great.(bonus points for next day on the bus all the seats are taken and muse b gets up and says they’ll sand and muse a is like fuck no i can’t let you do that and they get into a fight about it until muse b pulls muse a into their lap and says ‘compromise’)

 how about the complete fuckboy who is so used to routine. he picks up who he wants, it’ll be easy and if he’s lucky they’ll put up a challenge but they end up in the alley or in the men’s room and he always has the courtesy of kissing them goodbye and never seeing them again. and it’s like every saturday, he’s at the bar and he spots a pretty girl and she looks the perfect amount of innocent (he’s not up for a challenge tonight)  but theres a bit of banter going and eventually she ends up in the backseat of his Jeep and when they’re done he’s leans in with a grin, memorized almost like a catchphrase, “thanks for the great sex babe” to kiss her goodbye but she turns her cheek at the last minute, offers him a sweet smile “cute. that was great sex for you?” and just like that the fuck boy’s been fucked and she’s smoothing her skirt down and disappearing out of the backseat and he needs to find her again, needs to prove her wrong and it’s almost obsessive the way he needs her and suddenly hes just like one of the many girls that chase after him following a mediocre one night stand. 

 i really want a plot where this totally sweet girl is dating this total ass and he prob cheats on her all the time and is so shitty to her but she stays because she’s sweet and caring and he’s all she’s ever known and they used to be so in love but anyways he’s totally one of those guys who brings around his douche friends and they sit on the couch and talk about chicks and drugs and partying and she is supposed 2 be the regular house wife gf who brings them food and sits next to him when they watch movies so he can flaunt her and just be /: a dick /: ANYWAYS his fellow douche friend starts to slowly be like god this guy is so awful to her and he starts following her out of the room instead of staying to high five his friend for cheating on her w some club girl and idk he just generally starts hanging out with her more while her bf and his other friends hang out in the basement or some shit and they’ll like sit on the porch while he smokes and they just talk or he’ll help her make food or ANYTHING and it can go so many cute ways tbh like ? he could be listening to the friend brag about sleeping around one day or see him being shitty to her like yelling at her for nothing ro smth and just be like DAMN I’VE HAD ENOUGH and finally break and yell at his friend and fight for her and accidently admit that he thinks she’s totally amazing and he’d cherish her sm or he could kiss her one night while they’re talking and they could start sneaking around behind the friends back or anything so !

cliche plot where muse b( who’s a badass and lowkey kind of a jerk ) makes a bet with his friends that he can take muse a’s ( who’s a sweet lil angel ) virginity but then plot twist !!somehow sweet lil muse a worms her way into his cold heart and would you look at that ?? he’s fallen in love with her !! and so now he’s really set on losing this bet because he doesn’t want to hurt her but oops, he took her to a party and his friend accidentally let her in on their little bet. cue the angst and fluff

Muse a is a really powerful criminal. he basically has the world under their thumb. he’s killed lots of people (or at least ordered a lot of people to be killed) and he’s made a LOT of money this way. muse b, meanwhile, is a relatively ordinary person – she’s the girl next door. through a turn of events, the two meet and begin a fling. (muse a may or may not have a spouse at home, but that’s neither here nor there.) muse b knows muse a is a criminal – everyone does – but she enjoys the rush and the excitement. one day, though, muse b finds out she’s pregnant. and she realizes that muse a is not a suitable father for her baby. he’s too dangerous. death and destruction follows him everywhere he goes, and, as much as she cares about him, she knows he’s not exactly a good person. so she gives it to him straight: she’s going to end their relationship, move, and raise their child alone, and muse a is going to stay away. muse a truly loves muse b, so he agrees to her terms, and does her one better: he’ll send money to help raise the kid, and even pay for her new home. fast forward some years. muse b is settled into her new life with her child, and muse a has stuck to his promises. at least until one day, he shows up on her doorstep. he has several armed guards, and a car ready to go. “grab our kid and get in the car,” he says. “someone found out, and my enemies are after the two of you"

11.) Muse A, was a shy and sweet girl, who's never had any romantic relations. Muse B, was what you'd call a player, and a bit rude too. One night, Muse A caught Muse B's interest. So he talks to her. After talking for what seemed like hours, Muse B risks it and leans in to kiss Muse A. Muse A, being in complete shock, though confesses that it was her first kiss. Muse B completely doubting it, but after a bit of discussion he apologies hesitantly. Muse A, makes a deal with Muse B though.. She has to get to know him better. Annoyed, Muse B agrees and they exchange numbers. The next day, they meet at the park and start talking. Later in time, they start to have feelings for each other, but, Muse B always denies it. Can Muse A get Muse B's change in heart?

Muse a has a abusive father and a dead mother. Their father is almost always drunk when they get home and will do whatever he wants to muse a. Muse b is muse A's best friend- and has been for a while. They almost always hang out at muse b's house so they wouldn't find out about muse A's father. One day muse b insists on going to muse A's house. The second they walk in their greeted by muse A's drunk father. Muse b finds out the truth about their family and becomes very protective of muse a. They don't ever want to leave their side. Eventually through good times and bad a romance starts to bloom

Muse A and Muse B are neighbors who have never met. When a winter storm knocks out the power to their building, Muse A, terrified of the dark, lets out a bloodcurdling scream. Next thing they know, Muse B is banging on the door to make sure they're okay

Raoul headcanons because he’s my baby boy:

- he’s gluten free and lactose intolerant but because as a child everything was prepared for him he’s not used to checking packaging so there have been a lot of close calls

- he just generally has a very weak stomach

- he has really sensitive skin and has a 20 step skin care routine

- he’s trans and when he came out Philippe being the amazing big brother that he is attempted to fake Raoul’s death so that the public wouldn’t wonder why the vicomtess was suddenly a vicomte and then wait until Raoul passed as a guy and announced that he adopted a brother (this was completely pointless because nobody really gives a shit about viscounts anymore)

- Christine took him to see West Side Story at the theatre and he got asked to leave because he was sobbing so loudly

- he isn’t a theatre kid but he knows a lot of well-known musicals because he wanted to impress Christine before they got together. His favourite musical is Mamma Mia

- he has glasses but never wears them because of vanity reasons (he also loses them whenever he wears them so maybe that’s for the best)

- he is surprisingly good at cutting hair because his sisters got him to do it for them when they were younger

- the minute his head touches the pillow this man is asleep and will not be woken up. It sounds nice in theory but because his girlfriend knows Meg Giry he often wakes up with things drawn on him. The amount of times Meg has shaven off his moustache while he’s asleep is incredible

- Raoul learnt to knit just so he could make Christine a new red scarf. Sure, it was lumpy and had holes in it but he tried

- when he found out Christine was Swedish, the first thing he said was “my favourite band is ABBA” and boom they were inseparable after that

i have so many headcanons for daroga hehehe

i imagine that he would have trouble regulating his body temperature after the torture chamber incident. like, the moment he starts feeling even a little bit too warm he's taking off his coat and jackets as quickly as possible because he remembers just how hot it was.

i also think that daroga has an interest in machines and traps since he learnt of all Erik's tricks within the opera house and because of that he likes to stare at objects for a long time and deconstruct it with his mind figuring out what little piece does what and how it all comes together.

this was also another thing i discussed with my friends a while back but i headcanon that the reason the daroga was able to walk around and he pleased without any repercussions is because he pretends that he is a journalist writing for the newspaper about updates made on whatever is being produced and performed at the time. And so he walks around with a notebook pretending to look occupied whilst keeping an ear out for erik.

he's very goal driven, but also goal blinded, once his mind is set to something he's blind to everything else until it hits him right in the face and he's like 'ah. yes. that thing.' (mostly got this idea because so much of the time when he was taking raoul down the cellars to find erik he was constantly like 'oh yeah we have to avoid this other thing by the way' or something else would get in the way and he'd be like 'oh i forgot about that thing yeah'

similar to your own hc about christine, i imagine that people would call him 'unnerving' and 'disconcerting' maybe even 'scary' but only because they haven't spoken to him before. he's just quiet around people he doesn't know and just stands there like 🧍‍♂️most of the time. but once you actually do get to know him he's very approachable and friendly and talks a lot more than expected.

i have a few more they're mostly just mundane stuff like 'he hates messy spaces and loves to keep things organised and clean at all times'.

• he knows pressure points, human weaknesses, etc. basically my excuse to say Erik would know how to disarm Meg in LND because what was that.

• good at everything to an infuriating level. (Everything psychological not so much)

• people call her “nice” because they rarely speak to her at all. Not that she isn’t, but I’ve always thought she was a bit asocial.

• extremely empathetic to animals. She can’t even kill a spider. (Ahem)

• moved around with her father a lot, so she has some pretty severe attachment issues. She had good reasons to leave Erik, but Raoul(while he can be a jerk) takes the brunt of her poor coping mechanisms.

• In another life, had Erik not been so pushy and murder-y, they would’ve been very very close.

• Asexual. Yeah. Take that.

• Or she at least would dislike the very potent closeness and intimacy the devils tango brings. In other words sex repulsed.

• After the book, I imagine she took a small break from opera. She'd spent so much of her life doing things for others, and now it was time to do something for herself. Maybe she started singing what she wanted to sing, or maybe she pursued something entirely different. My idea: she began writing stories. After all, her connection to them had always been strong.

Raoul:

• can be an asshole, but more willing to admit it that others. I choose to interpret the fact that he so readily admitted how cruel he was(to a man who would publish this no less!) as an admission of guilt.

• a bit pudgy, but has some real muscle beneath it. He can’t be a twink doing sailor work I don’t think. (That rhymed!)

• hates Erik for taking his brother from him. He has a hard time watching Christine mourn Erik because of it.

Daroga:

• becomes Christine’s friend after the plot of the book. How, you ask? Beats me.

• I don’t have many headcannons about him I’m so sorry. Please, pitch your own id love to see em! He’s such an interesting character I feel so bad!

Not only do Evelyn Nesbit and Jean Harlow remind me of Sarah Brightman and Janet Devenish physically, but my head canons for Christine and Meg's career and personal trajectories are very similar to Nesbit and Harlow as well, but with hopefully happier conclusions.

Evelyn Nesbit was considered the greatest beauty and model of her day, inspiring Dana Gibson and taking the stage by storm. Yet much like poor Christine, Nesbit's life was derailed by manipulative men who preyed on her in her youth, and by a man's obsession with her which led to murder. Yet unlike Nesbit, Christine didn't marry a Harry Thaw but a Raoul de Chagny, and so hopefully she eventually finds comfort and contentment with family and home. Although her career would forever be shadowed by the events of her past, maybe a happier home life would enable her to another stage triumph, unlike Nesbit, whose life and career never fully recovered from the "trial of the century" scandal that followed Thaw's murder of White.

Jean Harlow was the first blonde bombshell, a tough modern woman with a heart of gold for newer audiences to latch on to. Like Meg, Harlow had a very close relationship with her mother, who tended to stake too much on her daughter's career and was always around, hovering. Although I see Madame Giry as being far more dignified about it, there is the potential that she pushes Meg too hard to make something of herself. Yet like we see in Meg throughout, Harlow didn't let familial and career pressures tarnish her naturally sunny disposition. Jean Harlow was everyone's pal, and that's how I see Meg. Like with Christine, I can only hope that Meg has a happier ending than Harlow, living past the brutally young age of 26.

Assigning dæmons to characters in the Phantom of the Opera!

Quick explanation of what dæmons are: In summary, in the His Dark Materials world, they're basically physical manifestations of the soul, just in animal form! They are most commonly the opposite sex of their human. It's also taboo and just. wrong to touch another person's dæmon, and usually only happens between lovers or in battle. You also can't move too far away from your dæmon without dying/being severed intentionally (which is. very traumatic. unless you're a witch). The relationship between a person and their dæmon is sacred—they're your lifelong companions, which I love the idea of. And, until a certain age, dæmons can shift to different animals (the age you settle (when your dæmon choose their final form) varies depending on the person).

ANYWAY enough info dumping time for my HEADCANONS for what dæmons the characters from The Phantom of the Opera would have!!

Christine Daaé: a canary named Einar

I'm just gonna say it now—I don't have much reasons for picking these dæmons other than vibes. I just believe that Christine would definitely have a little bird dæmon, and the canary just seemed like the cutest choice! Plus, according to google, canaries are "somewhat timid and shy little birds. Unlike larger bird species, they don't usually do well with being handled, although there may be the occasional exception. Canaries are charming birds..." They are also, from what I know, very cheerful and playful! Which I think fits Christine very well!

Plus, imagine the dynamic between her dæmon and Raoul's and Erik's dæmon—with one being a dog and one a cat. I don't know, I think it just adds a really interesting dynamic to their relationships!

Raoul de Chagny: a golden retriever named Lili

I think the reason I picked the golden retriever for Raoul is fairly obvious LOLL. But aside from the obvious matching personality, I thought it would be really interesting if his dæmon was a dog, especially because he's nobility. Because, according to His Dark Materials, people with dog dæmons actually usually tend to be servants. Which is very classist LOL but like. I feel like it makes complete sense to me that Raoul's dæmon wouldn't match his status in society, plus it would definitely give something extra for Philippe to be worried about regarding him. The dynamic with his social status and his dæmon just sounds like something really interesting to explore!

Plus, I love the image of Lili cuddling with Raoul whenever he's upset and/or starts crying.

Erik: a Siamese cat named Ayesha

I feel like the reason for this is really obvious LOL. Why don't I make Ayesha his dæmon?? I think it's extra sweet if she were! Plus OF COURSE Erik's dæmon would be a cat LOL. Honestly, what else would it be?? Plus, there's this analysis I found of Siamese Cat dæmons, and I think it fits him pretty well!

Plus I love the image of Ayesha getting really annoyed with Erik's shenanigans and advising against them, but still helping him with them anyway LOL.

Meg Giry: a nova scotia duck tolling retriever named Maxime

So I was thinking that, personality wise, Meg definitely would have a dog dæmon too. I was actually considering a golden retriever but I felt like it didn't really fit vibes-wise? So I looked for dogs that are similar and thought that the nova scotia duck tolling retriever looked perfect!! Plus, after I googled their personalities, I think they definitely fit Meg. I also just think it's adorable that Christine's two best friends both have retriever dæmons ehehehe

Philippe de Chagny: a red-tailed hawk named Désirée

So going with the nobility thing, I thought that Philippe would definitely have a really grand dæmon. Like the red-tailed hawk!

The dæmon forum on tumblr have actually already analyzed this dæmon, and I think the traits fit Philippe really well! Although I guess it can be argued he's an extrovert and not an introvert, but there's also such thing as introverts that are very social, so.

But yeah I just love the image of Philippe, with his hawk dæmon, and Raoul standing beside him with his golden retriever dæmon 😭

The Persian/The Daroga/Nadir: a Persian leopard named Fariba

No because I truly believe that Nadir would have the COOLEST dæmon ever. Which is yes, a Persian leopard. Like, the vibes just make sense!! Plus considering he was the chief of police, it just makes sense.

I also love the image of Nadir, with his epic leopard dæmon, and Erik beside him with his house cat dæmon LOLL

OTHER HEADCANONS FOR THIS AU:

I bet Raoul, when he was younger and before Lili settled, would often like it when Lili would shift into a red-tailed hawk, completely because he wanted to impress his brother and have a dæmon like his.

I also think that Christine and Raoul played all sorts of pretend games together, with their dæmons shifting into animals to match whoever they were pretending to be. I can also imagine them taking naps together under the tree, with their dæmons curled closely together.

I feel like when Erik was in the circus, his dæmon was handled so much to the point that he became desensitized to it. I also think he probably learned how to separate from Ayesha even if it hurt a lot to do so, but like out of necessity 😭

I feel like Einar would sit in Christine's hair a lot. I also feel like he and Ayesha would have a very interesting relationship with each other. I also feel like Einar would like to sit on the head or nose of Lili whenever Raoul and Christine are hanging out together.

I also feel like Erik would often be VERY tempted to touch Einar, and his hand might hover so close to him—but he would pull away before he ever did. But I also think that a part of Einar really wanted him to actually do it while at the same time being terrified that he does.

I also feel like, in this universe, to get Raoul, Erik actually grabs Lili so that Raoul is immediately weakened and pretty much incapacitated, and THEN he wraps the noose around his neck. I don't think he'd bother holding onto Lili the entire time—I don't think he'd like doing that either lol, considering his trauma regarding it. I also do feel like Erik would have Ayesha attack other people's dæmons, kind of like how Mrs. Coulter does it? But Lili and Ayesha have definitely had at least one fight, maybe during Wandering Child.

Everyone finds Nadir extra intimidating because of Fariba, even if Fariba is the most chill dæmon ever.

I love the idea that, after all the events of POTO, Christine and Raoul are sitting together and comforting each other, and that's when they touch each others' dæmons for the first time. And that's when their relationship with each other truly solidifies, because there's nothing more intimate than touching another person's soul.
