When you arrive at the restaurant, you're met with the grandeur of an upscale Chinese eatery perched on the top floor of a hotel building. The space is a harmonious blend of modern elegance and traditional opulence. As you step inside, the ambient chatter of elite people and the soft clinking of cutlery fill the air, creating a lively yet refined atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the muted silence of the mansion.

The restaurant’s interior is a feast for the senses. Rich, dark wood paneling lines the walls, accented by gold and red details that evoke a sense of luxury. Elegant lanterns hang from the ceiling, their warm, golden light casting a gentle glow across the room. For a moment, the clinking of silverware against porcelain fills the silence before Agust D finally speaks.

"Do you still not remember anything?" 

You hesitate, uncertainty flickering in the depths of your eyes about how to respond to him. "Bits and pieces," you admit, your gaze lingering on the dimly lit surroundings. "But nothing concrete. It's like trying to grasp at shadows."

His expression remains impassive, but you catch a fleeting glimpse of something else—something akin to regret, perhaps, or even longing. "It will come back to you," he says, his tone softer than before. "With time."

You only nod, going back to eating one of the xiaolongbao at the center of the table.

The air between you and Agust D grows heavier once again with unspoken words. You don’t like the silence. As someone who is very self-aware of their self, you feel compelled to break the silence to not be stuck in your head. 

"Agust D," you begin tentatively, the name feeling foreign on your tongue yet strangely familiar. You don’t refer to him by name often, as you opt for ‘sir’ or the occasional ‘Hyungnim’. "Why did you bring me here tonight? You never do this sort of thing…"

He regards you with an intensity that sends a shiver down your spine. "Well, you've been cooped up in that mansion for so long," he replies cryptically, his gaze piercing through the facade you've carefully constructed. “Thought it would be good to treat you for your work.”

"But why now?" you press, unable to suppress the curiosity gnawing at your insides. "And wearing this?" You refer to the short piece of black fabric covering you.

Agust D's lips quirk up in a wry smile, though there's no warmth in it. "Maybe I wanted to see how you'd be like out… not on duty," he muses, his eyes never leaving yours. "Or perhaps I simply wanted company for the evening."

Company, huh? From the outside, it looks like you’re on a date. You wouldn’t doubt the restaurant staff is already gossiping from behind the curtains partitioning you from the rest of the world.

You can't help but feel a sense of unease at his words, a nagging suspicion that there's more to his motives than meets the eye. "Is that really all?" you press, your voice tinged with uncertainty. "Or is there something else you're not telling me?"

What does he even mean by that? You feel like every time you speak even a bit casually to this man, you only end up more confused and maybe even a bit more scared.

After finishing dinner, the two of you begin to walk out of the restaurant, entering a long hallway that leads to large red sliding doors that exit.  Your eyes drift toward the grand wall aquarium positioned near the exit, its towering glass panels reflecting the soft glow of the overhead lights.

The aquarium is a masterpiece of design, housing a diverse array of aquatic life within its transparent confines. Colorful coral reefs sway gently in the water, their vibrant hues casting mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow across the sandy substrate below.

But amidst the bustling underwater ecosystem, your gaze fixates on a lone goldfish, its sleek form gliding gracefully through the water. Its vibrant orange scales shimmer in the ambient light, a stark contrast to the subdued colors of its surroundings.

From all of his fantasy couples and OTPs to watching his brothers fall in love with two sweet boys, he simply can NOT have it that his two nephews fall in love. (Yes, two nephews, because any child of Pete's will be spoilt the minute Tankhun walks in the room.)

He just has to come up with a scheme like on television for Phayu and Prapai to have the love story Tankhun deserves to see they deserve to have. Tankhun will be just like a director - he'll write the story and cast the parts and maybe even win an oscar in the end.

First, he has to cast the story, he has to find perfect matches for his nephews. Prapai needs someone who won't let him always get what he wants, someone who has even the potential to be okay with a life as dark as they lead. Phayu needs someone outgoing to bring him out more, someone who won't cower at his overbearing personality. Arm compiles a list of young bachelors and bachelorettes (though he's not sure how the find would react to having a woman marry in) in Bangkok, ones with no connection to rival families, ones that would not be easily persuaded to betray, ones who just may be worthy of holding the hearts of his nephews.

The list is decently long, so then they start to be pickier - only ones that were cute, ones that would look good in future family photos, ones who had nice hands that could maybe carry a family ring one day. It takes a while, but Tankhun divides his time evenly between watching his dramas and creating this drama.

Second, Tankhun has to write a rough draft. He takes a few from the list that he knows wouldn't work and tries some rough ideas out. Phayu is immediately put off by the pretty girl who spills her coffee on him and Prapai doesn't look twice at their cute waitress on their monthly family dinners. There is promise in the boy who stages a minor bicycle accident in front of Phayu and the girl who stumbles into Prapai at the library. Tankhun is working out kinks as fast as he can, writing what he can with the multiple possibilities until -

Third, he has to find a location. And there are a couple of pretty boys and girls from their list that could reasonably bump into either boy - some who work at the local café down the street from Prapai's office or some who have friends who take their cars to Phayu - but there are a few students from Phayu's university who are actually on their list and it's perfect, so many options - tutors, academic rivals, study group partners, meeting at a college party - and Tankhun considers each candidate thoroughly - one girl is voted off when they see her obnoxious Instragram posts, one boy is tossed to the side when they found a history of him filing noise complaints o his neighbors. Nark.

They scour social medias, past report cards, contact very confused neighbors and employers for references until Tankhun has his perfect two. A young man for Prapai and a young man for Phayu.

Tankhun writes the cutest first meet that he can for both - Rain's car will get a flat tire at the same time Phayu will be leaving the compound to head home. Though he could wait until they meet at a university event, but that's plain and predictable and Phayu will note have a boring love story. Tankhun watches from the bushes - well, he's watching on his phone from his bedroom as Arm and Pol film it through the bushes - Phayu is far too chivalrous to not offer to help, just like Tankhun knew! He is charmingly confident and impressive as he works on the car and Tankhun can see the moment Rain is swept off his feet.

Tankhun is pulling the strings for everything - he pays an actor to mention the street race in front of Rain and Sky (because Tankun is already very protective of his future nephew in law and there will be no need for his piece of shit ex to be involved), the guards working the race are instructed to chase Rain and Sky into Phayu and Prapai. It continues on as awkwardly forcing segues with Phayu about this article he read on how to support someone with ADHD or with Prapai about how to be a safe space for people you love. Arm and Pol are there to film all the meetings Tankhun has planned out so Tankhun can keep up with his favorite romcom starring this nephews.

But it's not enough, Tankhun has to experience this first hand, so he just happens to leave a magazine open on a page advertising a car show in Phayu's room at the same time he works up the nerve to go outside the compound - it still happens, but not all the time - and Tankhun had no idea car shows could be so fun, everything is so shiny and sparkly and -

"What are you doing here?"

"Oh, my favorite nephew! I came to...buy your uncle Porsche a new bike, of course! Who is this cutie hanging off your arm?"

It's Rain, twenty years old from Korea, only child of two parents married in 1998, an architecture major with a 2.76 GPA, blood type A+, no troubles with the law besides a speeding ticket last year, speaks four languages.

But Tankhun doesn't say any of that out loud. He already approves of Rain, already loves him, and he's going to be the favorite uncle and Tankhun chokes up when he realizes he's the first member of the family to meet their newest member.

And he plans the same thing with Sky - a few weeks later to recharge from going outside - mentioning in front of Sky a new restaurant to offer egg stew (because Tankhun paid them to put it on the menu). He waltzes in as Prapai and Sky get their food and prepare to eat.

"Oh, my favorite nephew! I'm here...to try their new egg stew of course! I saw you and your friend here already ordered some, how is it, scooch over so I can sit with you, move, move."

Tankhun gives Sky his most charming smile and he's already planning Sky's outfit for their Christmas card this year. As he sits there getting to gush over Prapai and Sky, Tankhun chokes up again as he realizes he's a guest star in his favorite show now. He's been a guest star twice.

And he knows how the family can be, so Tankhun keeps orchestrating more meet ups with the rest of the family so that his two new in-laws can grow to accept their quirky family. He takes Chay out and they run into Rain at the library, he takes Pete to bump into Sky at the mall, he takes Kinn to visit Phayu at the garage while Rain is visiting, he invites Kim to find Sky at a cafe by the school because Kim has known about Rain and Sky the whole time. Little shit. Someone should talk to him about how many secrets he's keeping from the family.

I don't know where this is going because I'm a little inebriated, but like, Tankhun plotting out the PhayuRain and PraSki romance because he loves his dramas, but also because he wants to make sure his nephews fall in love with good people and ensure no one hurts them. He uses his decades of knowledge about dramas and on screen romances to create the best love story he can.

I might be wrong but wasn't it LW that named Daphne a diamond of the first water, bc the Queen said she was flawless? Therefore launching her as the most desired woman in the ton. And starting the whole a "diamond" needs to be named? Then I've always thought in season 2 LW timed her edition to come out as Eloise is presented, specifically to interrupt the proceedings because she knew Eloise was uncomfortable. And the Queen would be completely distracted sometime before Eloise had to go through. Could be wrong but with LW I'm reminded of the song "one night in Bangkok" bc of the line "thank God I'm only watching the game, controlling it." I love when Violet finds the tea on Lord B, and says "we'll talk" bc it's what women do. A flurry of gossip later It saved Daphne from a horrible fate of a loveless marriage to that gross man (he used his status to get a servant of his pregnant and then abandons her and the child. Was this servant girl allowed to even say no to her employer with power? To preserve her innocence/reputation). It seems as if it's the only way a woman could influence her life or make a change.

Also Pen often sets the rumors straight, when others go too far in their speculation and it could blow up as something else entirely. The ton trusts LW's word bc she didn't lie. If she hadn't said what she'd said about Eloise it could have been worse. It softened the social blow, it was merely a smaller transgression though, not as bad as her and her whole family ruined which if it had been exposed elsewhere it would have. The men would have been fine but the the others prospects of marriage would have been damaged or non existent. Same with Marina, the Featherington's had to be socially distanced from even knowing what she was up to, or they would be ruined. It wasn't that she was cruel to Marina, to me, but loves her sisters enough to save them from what Marina did (I can understand her motives, but her cruelty towards Pen and callous way she marked Colin as an easy target upset me). My favorite real life example of how people gossip that could be good, is Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. Married at 17 in the 1770s, to "the only man in England not in love with his wife" and she was the main Whig party hostess, meetings, parties, and she even canvassed for votes. Parlor room behind the scenes politics. But the downside to gossip is that opposing sides will try to defame through gossip too, and caricature depicting the Duchess as an indecent woman who'd kiss men for votes in order to get Fox elected. That's a very quick overview of an amazing, yet flawed woman (her gambling). But it demonstrates for me at a time when women had very few rights, if you were in a higher social class, through gossip you can start change. Georgiana, as a Whig hostess, as a fashion icon of her time, a woman with the "common touch" very popular with the people, even though she was "her Grace" helped gain traction for her causes, wider rights, abolition and supported American colonial independence during the war. Whether it's a bigger or smaller issue, gossip can be both good and bad. The only time I really dislike it is when it's used to just purposely hurt others, instead of informing or questioning social outdated norms, its just a personal attack designed to hurt someone cruelly (Cressida making remarks about how many children Violet had and what that meant about her and her family...ooo I was not ok with Cressida there or her mama lol) .

I think Pen is sometimes judged too harshly, she'd been ridiculed and ignored in a society that already didn't value her as much as a man. Her future prospects to Her seemed dim, bc all Her life..... words like what Marina said, have been said to Her. Her worth was her family's good name and who she married, how much money they had. So she took some control and power for herself in the only way she could. Through gossip. Sorry I've rambled so long! This is an interesting topic though. 😊

I think I'm going to rewatch season specially because of this topic. I want to do an analysis about the nature of gossip and how affect the characters. Maybe more of one part because I think it's going to be long.

I think gossip has a force and doesn't need to be bad. It's neutral and it can show the real nature of the person who's using it. And like you said, Pen never lies. She says the truth, sometimes she even gave proof and her intentions were always good. She does it because nobody else want to see it. Nobody wants to listen the truth, she tried, and nobody was listening to her.

Colin never wanted to see Marina didn't loved him, because he didn't care, because he didn't loved her either. He was lying to himself. Eloise didn't want to see why Pen wrote about her, because she didn't wanted to accept Pen advertised about it many times, and she didn't listen. Daphne and Violet were practically saved by her, the marriage for Daphne, the Violet's reputation. We have so many moments of her helping them.

Gossip is a tool. A tool used women without any other weapon to protect themselves. I think it's a relationship between the female aspect of it and why society sees it like something wrong. Because words can hurt, and yes, they can be used to shame, and make damage, but gossip is a the weapon of the people who's not going to be heard otherwise.

Kinnporsche: The Symbolism

Not really a meta. More a collection of baby meta ideas I have and/or symbolism I noticed watching the series that didn't make it into my review.

Oh How The Tables...

I'm just saying that it's certainly ironic that Kim's first scene in the show is him mocking Big for his unrequited love for Kinn. He asks Big if he should write Big a song about heartbreak, and ends the series writing a song about his own heartbreak and begging Chay to take him back.

Big and Tawan

In general, I think Big and Tawan were the best done minor characters, and the best done characters in the series, if you look at their complete arcs, after Vegas and Pete (Kim and Chay would be next, but their arcs aren't entirely complete and never will be).

The same episode where Tawan concludes "if I can't be happy, then no one can," and commits suicide (intended murder suicide at that), Big sacrifices his life to save Porsche's, not because of Porsche, but because he loves Kinn. He dies assuring Porsche how much Kinn loves him.

In other words, Big reached the opposite conclusion of Tawan: even if it means he can't be happy, he wants Kinn to be happy. However, the story actually takes a nuanced, complex look at it and doesn't code it as Big=good Tawan=bad; Tawan is framed as tragic instead and you're meant to feel sad over his patheticism, not feel gleeful.

Portraits

Tankhun, Kim, and Vegas all have self-portraits in their rooms, and these portraits are all kind of symbolic of how they see themselves--though not necessarily accurate perceptions.

Well, except Tankhun's. Tankhun's just just a neon portrait that fits with his flamboyant decor. It's in the corner near where he watches his series, and is very straightforward because Tankhun, himself, is pretty straightforward. He's not hiding the same way the others are.

Kim's self-portrait is a watercolor of himself, but you can't any discernible features. Of course, this symbolizes how he hides himself behind many masks.

Behind that portrait, though, is his bulletin board of his family and all the players. Because no matter how Kim acts distant and aloof, he's actually always strategizing and planning to thwart any threats to his family.

Vegas's self portrait is in a secret room that can only be entered via a passcode, symbolic of how it's really hard to reach the true Vegas because he keeps his vulnerabilities locked up. But when you do enter that room, you see a portrait of a misshapen man that looks more monster than human. That's how Vegas sees himself.

Kinn notably does not have a portrait (that I saw), but his walls are instead windows that overlook Bangkok, which can be symbolic as well: that he doesn't see himself fully as a person, but instead as someone who's supposed to be controlling and surveying something much, much bigger than himself.

Kinnporsche Sexy Times

The idea for symbolism here wasn't fully developed, but it's there, so.

The first two times Kinn and Porsche have sex mirror the first sexual encounters with others we see them engaging in. The first scene is the Bad Scene, or really, where Kinn basically assaults Porsche since Porsche is way too out of it to consent. But during this scene, Porsche draws attention to the beauty of the city view, which is a callback to how Kinn's hired prostitute remarked that he wanted to see the entire view (and then opened the curtains to find Porsche there, because Kinn's answer to who he is is more adequately found in Porsche than the city).

Of course it's also kind of a comment on how Kinn views himself in terms of the city, which is not entirely a good understanding lol.

The next time they have sex--and the first time it's consensual--is in the backroom of a club, which mirrors where we see Porsche having sex with the two girls in the series. I'd argue this is probably supposed to be seen as Kinn meeting Porsche where he's at, and to a degree vice versa, but also Kinn's is more morally questionable than Porsche's in terms of consent and power.

Kimchay - The Little Mermaid

I talked a little about the fairy tale motif that was never actually explored in the story despite it having a ton of potential in my review, and I'm going to talk more about it now because I can.

Listen, if Vegaspete and Kinnporsche are both loosely based on Beauty and the Beast (Vegaspete more directly a retelling, right down to resurrection), Kimchay is probably based on "The Little Mermaid," the other story that gets a direct shout-out in text. Here, both characters are both mermaid and prince.

Kim wants to live a life as part of a different world, and uses his voice to get there. In the end, just like the mermaid in the original tale, he loves the prince (Chay) too much to risk him coming to harm, even if that means his own doom. However, it's precisely that selflessness that helps him live above a filthy world.

Chay also wants to live in a different world and uses his voice to get there. Only, despite all he risks to get there, it doesn't quite work out. The prince (Kim) doesn't return his feelings... well, except he does, but he sure made Chay feel like he didn't for awhile there.

Succession: Kinnporsche Version

The novel apparently mentions this but I'm not interested in reading it for Reasons, but I did find it intriguing that the mafia family isn't exactly going to continue considering all five of the current generation (Khun, Kinn, Kim, Vegas, and Macau) are all gay. For all the talk about being an heir and succeeding Papa Korn, it's not gonna go for another generation. I actually like this and think it could be a major thematic point if emphasized appropriately, or brought up at all in the series.

Like. The family burdens the kids because of mafia stuff, trying to pit them against one another and using them to solve their grievances... but love can save the day, and also give life, and quite literally stop the cycle--but it's love that isn't traditional, in a sense. It's queer. This also doesn't mean the characters can't have kids, obviously, but symbolically they have to come up with different, nontraditional ways to do so if they do, symbolic of having to like... break from the traditional patriarchal violence of their mafia upbringings.

The ingredients are there! It could have been a thing!

Namphueng: The King

Namphueng's room has a chessboard pattern on the floor, which ties into the chess motif that Korn was always messing around with. While the audience was led to believe the queen was Porsche in all Korn's playing scenes--and they were right--they were also led to believe the king was either Kinn or Korn. Incorrect. The king was Namphueng, not Kinn or Korn.

The king, after all, isn't really free to move. It theoretically can move in any direction, but only one space at a time. It's quite limited.

I do wonder--not that this will ever be answered--if Namphueng's story is intended a lot more important than just "foster sister." Like maybe her family was wiped out because she was the heir of a far more important family or something.

The Victor Writes History

Or so Korn said. Again, not that we'll ever get it cleared up, and I personally like the ambiguity wherein we don't know precisely what happened between Namphueng, her husband, Korn, and Gun. I wouldn't actually have wanted it perfectly cleared up. Thematic! Complexity!

Gun's memories match better with Porsche's than Korn's do--the cabinet where Porsche hid is open in Gun's memories, but not in Korn's, and Porsche remembers Korn standing while Gun sits, which is what happens in Gun's version. However, whenever there are multiple versions of a story, the truth is probably in the middle, and it's hard to believe Gun, of all people, had purely selfless motives.

My personal guess is Korn did kill Namphueng's husband, but it was less about "how dare you not come back!" cruelty and more a long-game plan to get his and Gun's father to spare Namphueng and fake her death to protect her. I think this fits best thematically with the story and the characters as present in the series, in that Korn's motives can be both caring and selfish and power-seeking at the same time. It's also tragic, because killing someone loved by someone to protect them actually has a way of killing them even if you didn't plan on it. Someone can still be alive but have lost everything, a statement that multiple characters made in the show.

It would also fit that Korn misunderstood the power of love, because he definitely doesn't get it. But he didn't ruin every love story, because Kinn and Porsche end up together.

Whose Handprints?

I am annoyed i never got the answer to whose finger paintings Korn had in his desk drawer (the ones Kim found). I presume it's Porsche and Chay's given that there are two handprints, not three, and one is far larger than the other (plus the emphasis on Namphueng and art) but who knows.

I hope you’re doing well! Thank you for always sharing information about pretty much everything, along your thoughts. After every event I always look forward to reading your reviews/comments.

You’ve pretty much inspired me to learn Japanese (along with the girls)! I’m even studying abroad in Japan this fall!! My exact days are August 22 - December 22.

I wasn’t sure I would be able to go until quite late (my program sucks at communications info) so I’ve been busy dealing with preparing to go to Japan, that I haven’t applied or bought any tickets! (Pretty much panicking at this point since I don’t know when I’ll be back).

Unfortunately YK vol.#20 tour ends before I arrive which I’m so depressed about since I loved every setlist (especially with Hikaru now performing T_T) (hoping she has more performances). Thankfully there’s still Wakana’s Classics, but I’m trying to figure that out still.

I was wondering if you knew any upcoming performances where there’s a good chance I can buy tickets still (whether online or at door) or have any advice on what I should do? I know there’s the Highway Star Party event but I’m not really interested in that. I will have a japanese phone number, address, and residency card so hopefully even the trickier tickets don’t cause any problems.

Also is there anywhere you suggest I visit? Restaurants and food? I plan to do a deep search and visit places the girls have mentioned ^ ^, more specifically around Tokyo.

What a shame though that you won't make it in time for the last YKL Vol#20 performance with Hikaru as guest vocalist. As of right now, I don't think they are planning to add any more dates for Japan. They have been known to announce at least one or two additional performances for Tokyo in the past but this year, it looks like they will end the main portion of the tour this weekend in Saitama. However, there are four concerts scheduled for November in China, Thailand and Malaysia. Chances are high that Hikaru will be invited as guest vocalist for these. Keep an eye out for any updates on that! We don't have any details yet but if you get the chance to go on a short weekend trip, I'd definitely recommend you get yourself a ticket and check out one of those places.

Overseas Performances YKL Vol.#20 Tour The performances are scheduled for November 2024. YK and her team will be returning to Shanghai (China), and will be performing for the first time in Guangzhou (China), Bangkok (Thailand), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

It may be a bit too late for this but you should 100% try to get a ticket for Keiko's upcoming fan club event! Just a few days ago, they announced a second lottery round so there's still a chance to apply for tickets until August 4! I don't know if you are a member of Keiko's FC but you could technically still register and hopefully finish the procedure in time to take part in the ticket lottery. Please note though that you'll probably need help from someone in Japan when using Lawson Ticket.

The Toyama live in particular is something I'd aim for if you want to have the best possible experience. Also a great opportunity to explore Hikaru's hometown

As for food and restaurants, that's very difficult for me to answer because I typically try to visit places that the girls have recently been to (I guess it's more of a spontaneous thing?). I do my best to keep track of all the good spots but it's a struggle T_T I suck at everything that's related to locations. However, you can check out my MEDIA posts on Twitter to see pictures of some of the spots I've already visited. I usually add a little description to my tweets so you should be able to figure out which places I'm talking about.

Three very popular Kalafina pilgrimage places are definitely Tsurutontan Roppongi (from an old blog post), La Maison Kioi (from a SPICE interview) and Shinagawa Aquarium (from a FC Harmony feature). Here's a blog post where I talk about visiting all three of them. One day, I want to eat at all the gyoza restaurants that Wakana has recommended in her fan club magazines but that's actually not so easy since most of those places are tiny and require a reservation.

You should also try to make short day trips to Ishikiri-Sanmyaku and Oya History Museum (best done with a group of locals or fellow fans). Both are beautiful locations which were used for various music videos (Kalafina's "Hyakka Ryouran", Hikaru's "Alterna-ate-", Kalafina's "Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa", Wakana's "Butterfly Dream").

Sorry I can't provide a better list but hopefully, this will help at least a little bit.

The group has the day off, and most use this opportunity to rest after completing a successful comeback. The night before, Jihyo asked you for some alone time to clear her mind after a busy couple of weeks.

With Jisoo at her grandparents, the both of you have the afternoon to yourselves, so you decide to go for an afternoon drive. 

You drive on the road with a fantastic view of the coastline, the windows down, and the air blowing Jihyo's hair. You can't help but admire how beautiful she is, your future wife. "You look amazing, Jihyo. I'm the luckiest man in the world to have found someone like you."

"You're the lucky one. I'm the one that went after the pursuit; you had no chance, haha," as she gives you a loving smile. 

She grabs your hand and intertwines it with hers, "I'm glad we took this time apart from everyone."

"Good thing you asked, it's been a hectic these past couple of weeks, but it's finally over."

"Haha, we did a good job; thank you for Fancy, it's such a good song. From what I could see, Once loved the song."

"Really? I'm too afraid to check, so I haven't been on social media."

"Oh yeah, the group chat has been flooded with pics of Once's comments on the song. You really did an amazing job, Mr. Producer."

There is also Da-eun, who's only a few months old, and she is still too small to travel internationally. It's one thing to Japan and taking them since it's so close but going to other countries, it's going to be hard."

Jihyo's hand begins to shake slightly. "What are we going to do, oppa? I don't want to leave them behind, but we can't take them either."

"We're going to get through this. The tour's first leg is around Asia, so we won't be too far out. Let's see; we have two days in Seoul, one day in Bangkok, Manila, and Singapore. They're spread out that we'll be back home. The only part that would worry me would be the North American concerts and the last leg of Asia. Maybe we can ask your mom to watch over them for the first leg."

“I can ask, but I also don't want to rely on them too much, you know. I feel bad because it's not just Jisoo this time; its four children. Plus, taking care of an infant like Da-eun with Jisoo and Ari, I don't think it's would end well."

"Hmm… I might have another option, but I don't know if you are going to like it." Jihyo sees your hesitation, "Come on, tell me, don't keep it to yourself. You already opened your mouth, just spit it out," as she smacks your arm. 

"Okay, but just keep an open mind."

"Yeah, I'll try."

"You know how I go to the company building for meetings, right?"

"The one in the mornings."

"Yeah, well… there are times when we have a long break in between or finish early, so I shop for groceries here and there. Well… I've bumped into Chaeyoung's mom several times, and we talk here and there. She's sweet and friendly; she even invited me for lunch and asked me about Chaeyoung and the rest of the girls."

"Oh really?” with a suspicious looked.

"Yup, she mentioned how lonely she is at home since her two children are adults and no longer live with her. I feel bad because she gets so happy when I stop by to the point that I even bring her groceries from time to time. She's even shown me some childhood pictures of Chaeyoung; she was so cute when she was small, haha."

"Seems like you have a lot of time on your hands," as she gives you a side eye. 

"No, it's not like that. I forgot my main point…" as you try to remember why you brought up the subject in the first place. "Oh yeah, during one of our talks, she mentioned how hard it was for her to raise chaeyoung and her brother as a single mother. She struggled a lot until she enrolled them in a nursery. She said that they liked it so much that she ended up as a volunteering at the nursery as well. I remember her saying that she still does it from time to time, so I thought that maybe we can ask her to watch over the kids since she's more than qualified."

You watch as Jihyo remains silent and gives it some thought. "You haven't told her about the kids, right?" 

"No, I haven't said anything. All we talked about was your life as an idols and Chaeyoung. Well, she did ask me if I had something going on with Chaeyoung, but I just said that we like to mess around."

"Wait, what do you mean by mess around?"

"Like playful things, you know, joking around that type of stuff."

"Hmm, okay. That's fine."

"So what do you think? Should we ask her?"

"Hmm, if you think she's qualified, then I don't think it's a bad idea. Will we need to talk to Chaeyoung about it and check if she's willing to do it."

"If not then we can ask Mina's mom. Mina has mentioned that she always asks about the kids, so she might be willing to do it if we ask."

"You're right; with my mom and Mina's mom, I think we can make it work. It would be a win-win situation on both sides; the babies get to see their grandparents and spend time with the grandkids."

"Okay, sounds like a plan. All we have to do is talk to the members about it."

As you reach the final destination, you park the car in a spot that has a perfect ocean view. Parking high on a cliff gives you the best view of both the ocean and the surrounding terrain. "It's been a while since we have been right, oppa." "Yes, maybe a year or two?" "You're right, even before Jisoo."

"Wouldn't it be nice to live near the beach?" as you look at the beautiful scenery. Jihyo reaches for the cooler in the back and gives you an ice-old soda and some snacks. "Here, I picked this up before coming here." The both of you stay silent as you take in the view. 

Minutes pass in silence until Jihyo says, "What do you think about moving?" You're surprised by her question, "You mean getting a new house?"

"Yes, the house we have right now is doable, but with Sana's pregnancy, it will be difficult. Mina, Dahyun, and I have our own room, but the rest of us share, so it will be hard once Sana gives birth. We don't have the space anymore."

"You're right. I've been thinking the same thing lately."

"I've been looking online for any houses with rooms for all of us or two houses next to each other, but I haven't had any luck," sulks Jihyo. You try to comfort her, "It's going to be okay; we just have to try a pick harder."

"Just thinking about it makes me so stressed; I just can't help it. Eventually, the babies will need a room when they grow up; it's not like they can always sleep with us. They are going to want their room once they're older." 

"This might sound like a crazy idea, but what if we build our dream house? We can buy our own plot of land and build it how we want. Just imagine this, a large house, plenty of rooms, a big kitchen, a backyard, and a playroom for the kids." 

The idea of having a house built from the ground up sounds like a dream. You watch as she is in deep thought, thinking of what her future house could look like. "Okay, let's do it. If I want to have a big house, enough for all of us to live comfortably."

With Jihyo in agreement, you tease her, "We can even have a room that we can use to have fun," as you wink at her. Jihyo immediately understands what you mean, "you dirty boy," as she smacks your thigh.

"Haha, I'm just joking." 

"No, maybe we should," as she looks at you with a lustful face. She slowly rubs your thigh, "We can have some fun and not worry about anyone bothering us," she said before pulling her hand away. 

"I would really it; maybe we can try for a second one," as you wink at her. "Stop, you're going to make me really want one. You know how busy we are right now, so maybe later when Jisoo is a bit older."

With a disappointed face, you accept your fate, "Okay. I'll get on the process then." The both of you enjoy the rest of your evening together as you walk by the beach.

Jihyo and Jisoo take a bath together once they get home after a long day. You tuck them into bed, kiss them goodnight, and return to your room. 

You look online to see the requirements to purchase land in Korea and compare prices between locations like the city, countryside, and suburbs. While browsing, you remember your friend Samatha from college and give her a call. After a long conversation, she recommends you to a friend she worked with for her bathhouse. Your night ends with you making a list of potential requirements for the perfect home.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...

this is a great question for someone who can retain memories of things they like lol but yes, i will answer it anyway! in no particular order because i simply cannot make myself decide further. this is also hard because I tend to enjoy characters in groups or pairs, with the dynamics between them driving my interest more than individuals (i have noted at the end of each one which dynamics I enjoy about this character with other characters)

Luxa from the Underland Chronicles (book series): she's a queen (literal), she's a bitch (affectionate), she's all of 12 years old and ruling an entire underground nation by herself with only her sworn-companion giant bat to help her. She's smart and competent and a little arrogant (traits you will see pop up multiple times in this list) and everything I wanted to be as an 8 year old. Now, as an adult, I want to wrap her in blanket and keep her safe. (Dynamics I enjoy: platonic soulmates with her bat Aurora; annoyances-to-friends-to-cannot-be-in-love with Gregor)

Dean from Until We Meet Again (Thai BL): if one of my favorite character types is smart/competent/arrogant, the other archetype I love is stoic, gentle, and a little awkward. Dean has this down to a science. He loves Pharm in such a simple, breathtaking way. He has a complex relationship with his own past life (I get the feeling that Pharm would get along well with Intouch, but Dean would always resent Korn, at least a little). He's a good friend and a good brother, even if it doesn't seem like it at first glance. He's got a dumb sense of humor, too, but he passes it off with stoicism. (Dynamics I enjoy: with his soulmate Pharm; with his own past life Korn; with his best friend/annoyance Win)

Tankhun from Kinnporsche (Thai BL): my darling Tankhun! No one has suffered more than him. I love how blatant and fearless he is in his fragility, as if he's daring the world to try to hurt him again. He's the eldest brother but he had to give up his role and his authority for his own recovery, so he has to allow Kinn to take care of his business for him. If his trauma hadn't happened, I know he would have been the most feared mafioso in all of Bangkok. (Dynamics I enjoy: his best friends Arm and Pol are hired by his father to be his bodyguards; his brothers who he went from caring for to being cared for by)

Nott the Brave/Veth Brenatto from Critical Role (Real play D&D campaign): She waltzed into my heart and stole all the buttons from my cardigan. She's a goblin who hates herself but actually she's a halfing who was cursed to be a goblin and she still hates herself. She's self-destructive but extremely skilled and so so protective of her best friend and (platonic???) soulmate Caleb. She has a kid and she doesn't really love being a mother but she does love her son so much. I think she would be improved with a divorce but that's a controversial opinion i guess (Dynamics I enjoy: the completely unexplainable bond she has with Caleb--is it platonic? is it romantic? is it sexual?? i think it's all of it?? they kissed on the mouth and the fandom pretends it never happened wtf. Also her relationship with fellow chaos-creator, jester).

Kyo from Fruits Basket (manga, anime): Kyo is so angry and pathetic and he belongs in my pocket. he's the most cursed person in a family of cursed people, he's got an inferiority complex that fuels his entire character arc despite being very competent at the things he does, he loves passionately and silently and cannot be convinced that he's worth the love others give to him. (Dynamics I enjoy: with Tohru, the girl who loves him and whose love he doesn't feel he can accept; with Yuki, the rival he hates but wants to be like more than anything; with Akito, the god who hates him)

Andrew Minyard from All For the Game (book series): like Tankhun, he's unapologetic about how he deals with his trauma. Is it healthy, how he's dealing with it? not even a little. but he's fully focused on his own healing and on protecting the few things he considers to be precious to him and I greatly admire that. And yes, I do love it when characters get to go violently apeshit in defense of their loved ones. He committed first degree murder and it's simply considered not a big deal by the narrative-- correctly so. (Dynamics I enjoy: with his twin whom he would (and did) kill for but otherwise just kind of ignores; his feelings for Neil which cannot be simplified into a word as meaningless as "love").

Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet (movie): tiny baby me looked at Jim with his rat-tail undercut, his complex relationship with his parents, his misunderstood bad-boy nature, and his drive to be a small part of something big and went "oh worm?". I've been slowly rotating him in my mind since then. (Dynamics I enjoy: cool teen who loves his mom but doesn't want to show it; the morally-ambiguous pirate who became a pseudo-father to him on accident)

Rose Tyler from Doctor Who (tv series): tumblr loves her so I don't have to explain, surely. But I will. She's 19 and brave and powerful and determined and somewhat of a shitty person but again as I said, 19 years old. and she has an unspeakably old and powerful alien wrapped around her finger. iconic. (Dynamics I enjoy: her whole thing with Nine and Jack, plus how different things are with her and Ten)

Thorin Oakenshield from the Hobbit (book/movie): stoic, awkward, honorable, arrogant... this was a character invented in a test tube to appeal to me. Banished king who worked as a smith to support his nephews and lead his people as best he can. Beautiful singing voice. Went mad and redeemed himself in death. He lives on in my heart (and au fanfiction). (Dynamics I enjoy: with his best friend and right-hand man Dwalin; with Bilbo for Bagginshield reasons clearly)

Parker from Leverage (tv series): she's soooooooooo everything to me. Competent, smart, autistic as hell, lives in the vents and has two partners (let's not quibble about if they're smoochin, we all know they are) who love her so much. she takes down criminals while being a criminal herself. (Dynamics I enjoy: with her boyfriend Hardison who very carefully courted her; with Eliot who is not her boyfriend and not her friend but who understands her on a deeper level than anyone else; with Sophie and Nate who trained her to be a leader and a mastermind)

It took me a while but I found a Vietnamese translation of Art Adore En and I'm currently trying to make sense of the auto-translated English (it's a lot better than auto-translated Thai because at least it keeps the names and doesn't turn them into nouns).

And since some of you were curious, here's a few (and then a few more) details and plot points from the novel.

Also, this will probably come in several parts because things escalated and tumblr told me to stop. Oops.

All of these characters either already came up in Chains of Heart or will come up in Art Adore En and Love Puzzle - and they're almost all played by different actors.

There's a couple of more books and stories all set in the same universe but they haven't been announced as series yet (which they should - esp the supernatural stuff!)

ART ADORE EN NOTES PT1

Art Adore En is set nine years before Chains of Heart when Hin is 18.

Hin's family lives in Uttaradit which is in Northern Thailand, about 500km from Bangkok.

Hin studies Visual Arts (hence the name of the novel: Art adores Engineering - which Phayu is studying).

Pleng (one of the main characters in Love Puzzle - played by Noh Phouluang) is Hin's best friend. He's also from Uttaradit. He studies computer engineering.

When they first come to Bangkok to study, they do so on their motorcycles. Hin's motorcycle is a red Honda he calls "red ant". The drive takes them twice as long as planned because it's incredibly hot that day. They immediately have to attend freshmen interviews and they make it just in time.

Hin's name is Kantika Ngandi (/ng/ is pronounced like the ng in 'singing'). He doesn't like his name.

Ken is also studying Fine Arts, he's one year older than Hin and described as tall.

Basically, Hin is the prettiest. When they do dress-up for freshie week, Hin has to dress up as a girl and everyone is dazzled. Ken chooses him as the freshie star even though he's supposed to choose a girl. He kisses him on the cheek. Ken, I am shocked.

Hin and Phayu first meet at a urinal - while Hin is still dressed up as a girl and wearing the freshie star sash.

Aaand Ken is chasing after Hin, along with about 34 other seniors. Ken, I am shocked.

During everyone's first night out at a bar Phayu kisses Hin completely out of the blue because he still owes him a kiss from freshie week (this is also the night where Pleng and Phrai begin their secret relationship).

Hin used to help out at his parents' massage parlour so he knows how to give a good massage. He decides to work at another massage parlour in Bangkok part-time for some income. He also cleans his 4-person dorm room, including doing everyone's laundry (and as he's also roomies with Pleng, Pleng's mum pays him for it). When Phayu realises this, he gets him to clean his room too. Hin doesn't really seem to mind.

Hin doesn't participate in the moon & star contest but since his friends Pleng and Safe (the only other boy in Hin's faculty and year) are, he helps out by taking photos. As last year's moons, Phayu and Ken help out too. During a bathroom break Hin overhears two other freshie stars gossiping about him and plotting to badmouth him. They're also overheard by Phayu who wants to exclude them from the contest. When Hin chooses to forgive them instead, Phayu is angry.

Hin's father's name is Somnuk.

Later, Hin is heartbroken because of his childhood crush on a boy named Yu. When he finally resurfaces, he decides to go sightseeing on his trusty motorcycle. It's hot and he's wearing a leather jacket which draws the attention of the seniors because when he takes it off his shirt underneath is soaked and semi see-through. This gets Phayu so jealous that he immediately cancels all of his plans and spends the morning with a somewhat unwilling Hin. Later in the day, Hin is supposed to meet up with Pleng and Safe at a Japanese style hot spring but because Phayu got wind of it, he arranged for the whole freshie contest group to book out the onsen. Everyone is (as good as) naked. Hin is very shy but he gets to spend semi-naked quality time with Phayu. He even gives him a back massage. Meanwhile, Phayu is a horndog and keeps thinking naughty thoughts.

Not (remember? the guy who can see the future and touch people to see their past) is Hin's code senior. He and Guy/Kai were a couple but suddenly Not forgot all about him and travelled to the Netherlands. They're destined to be together and you can tell by their peculiarly beautiful eyes. Everyone's sad that Not left. Bun/Boon (one of Phayu's friends in Chains of Heart who is a police detective) had to step in as Hin's code senior. Guy is also Bun's older brother.

Ken is the president of the Rugby club. Bun is the president of the detective club.

Hin really, really likes peanut butter. Nobody knows but him, his closest friends Pleng and Safe, and Yu - the person Hin has been crushing on forever (unfortunately Yu is MIA). When Pleng announces that Hin will get with the person who makes him his favourite food, someone comes forward anonymously. Someone who Hin believes must be Yu.

Hin later joins the Western Dessert club because everything there is made with peanut butter. The club only has three members, including Phayu. The club also doesn't even accept new members... unless their name is Kantika.

Phayu (and Phrai) study biomedical engineering. As does Pokpong/Pong (who will be played by Poppy in Love Puzzle) apparently. Pong has learned martial arts from an early age and lives in hiding from his father who is some kind of hotel tycoon.

Now Phayu is trying to find Hin but Hin is avoiding him and has apparently enlisted the help of all of the other seniors. Phayu decides to tag him in a fb post with the uni's hashtag, and a cat and mouse game ensues with Hin trying to run away and Phayu following the hints of the commenters.

Hin is helped by Ken, Bun and others. They dress Hin up to look like Mai Davika so he can escape. Their plan almost works but just as Hin walks past Phayu, Phayu calls him and recognises his ringtone. He barely escapes. People are now betting on the outcome. Hin realises that he's actually already fallen for Phayu but he doesn't want to let down his seniors so he proceeds with their plan of using several body doubles. Meanwhile, Phayu is already one step ahead and waits for Hin in the ambulance that was supposed to take him off campus (everyone is involved now and the ambulance belongs to the Faculty of Medicine). Phayu confesses to Hin that he only wanted to see him one more time before the freshie contest comes up and he'll be too busy to meet. Hin takes the initiative (because Bun reminded him earlier that his name "Kantika" means attacker/fighter) and kisses Phayu.

Safe wins the Moon contest (with Pleng as the first runner-up) and Safe and Pleng both win the popularity contest with the exact same amount of votes. Phayu won last year's Moon contest.

After the contest there's a surprise concert by a group called Full Moon - a band who all wear masks and already announced that this is going to be their last gig. As Hin watches they play a song from his childhood that means a lot to him (it's an indie song from when his mum was young). Later, the band unmasks and the leadsinger is Phayu (Ken, Yuji, Ae and Maengpong are also in the band). Hin bails.

And so much for part 1 of my Art Adore En notes. I have two more pages of notes ready to go and a handful of chapters and specials still to read.

Also, if there's ever going to be an official English translation of this I'm going to buy it so fast. Currently, none of TJ Tommys novels are translated and that's a shame since there's so many interesting characters and stories.

do you have a favorite of your factions? and if so can you tell us about them?

Gosh, that's actually really hard. I adore all of them, but funnily enough...right NOW it's The Petrified Ruins.

It's actually based off of a roleplay I did a long, long, long time ago. It's also a huge showcase of my love for abandoned buildings, hahaha.

It started with a picture like this of the New World Mall in Bangkok--which is home to a crap-load of fish. I thought it was the coolest thing, and so I started developing a building based on this one: but an abandoned Lightning laboratory in Nature territory. There's a lot of power to be harnessed in Nature, after all.

No one knows who really built the place, and it's hidden by a very strange power that seems to source from Darnell himself. It's extremely easy to get very, VERY lost trying to find the ruins--but if you're allowed in, that's actually very much worse.

Darnell makes living 'statues' out of dragons who stray too far into his territory: hence the name "Petrified Ruins"! (Even if they're basically living tree roots and whatnot, but you get the point. :'D) Now if you're really unlucky, he also does some twisted genetic BS-ery. You do NOT want to be part of that. You'd rather be food for his Koimodo Dragon at that point. (She's a good girl, but she bites. Hard. <3)

There are loads of dragons who do his bidding, all (or almost all I guess--Timber is the oddball Earth kiddo hahaha) some various form of a Nature dragons that are a little different...how? No one knows, but you'll definitely feel something off when you meet them.

When I said I had a whole faction of monster dragons, WELP. That's definitely them!

Tsukiko is constantly followed by the perfume of cherry blossoms. The intensity of the scent can change depending on his emotions.

PERSONALITY: Tsukiko is a calm person. Being the least favorite child of his father, he is used to being discreet and not make waves, preferring to stay in his little corner than mixing with others and their drama. He is gentle, nice and empathetic. Smart, skillful and patient in his job, he’s often very appreciated by his colleagues and patients.

Thanks to Sundrop, he learnt to open to others and truly enjoy life. He’s a good listener, always helpful and respectful. Due to his powers, he feels a deep connection to nature. He loves spending time outside, on his own or with friends when possible.

Unfortunately, his relationship with the doctor killed something within it. Tsukiko is now even more reserved, avoiding others as much as he can. He’s scared of love, thinking he’s not worthy of it and that all he deserves is blows and insults.

HISTORY: TW for abusive relationship and domestic violence, mentions of suicidal thoughts and dubious consent.

Tsukiko’s mother gave him life, a name and the scent of cherry blossoms before disappearing with a last cuddle. His father quickly put that episode of his life behind him, never speaking of it anymore. He loved his son but not enough to allow him to learn more about his mom and her culture or letting him talk about her and his divine identity.

The man soon married and went to have two more children, a boy and a girl. They went along with their older brother pretty well but though Tsukiko had everything he needed, it soon was more than evident that his dad preferred his other children. The young boy tried not to let it affect him too much, too busy learning the powers he had recently discovered.

When Tsukiko was twelve, his family moved to Chiang Mai, his stepmother’s birth city. He didn’t mind the change of scenery, especially not after meeting a boy of his age, Sundrop, who soon became his best friend. The two of them  were always together, exploring the city and the close countryside, spending countless sleepovers at Sundrop’s house. Their bond only deepened when they realized they both were children of goddesses.

The two friends peacefully grew together and so did their feelings. Nothing was said but first kisses and touches were secretly exchanged, until Tsukiko’s siblings found them and ran to tell their father. The teenagers were separated, an eighteen years old Tsukiko was sent to the USA for his nursing studies and contact was lost.

The nightmare started a few years later with a fairytale cliché, the young nurse Tsukiko falling for the handsome, talented and popular older doctor. Everything started well, the doctor covering him with gifts and flowers, bringing him to the most expensive hotels and restaurants before moving him into his luxurious apartment.

Tsukiko naively thought that the first slap was an accident. After all, he had contradicted the doctor and in front of a patient no less. It was forgiven with what he took for sincere apologies and a bunch of roses. But then it never stopped, blows falling on him for the silliest reasons. He forgot to close the toothpaste tube or food was served five minutes too late or he didn’t perform well enough in bed. There was no excuses anymore, only anger, humiliation  and degradation.

As his sweet scent of cherry blossoms declined with his health, Tsukiko could smell the perfume of others onto the doctor, the cheating adding to the pain her already felt in his mind and body. After a particularly violent night, as he laid on the bathroom floor and considered that death might be better than this life, he was surrounded by a strong scent of cherry blossoms and petals flew around him before settling down, spelling the words ‘Mount Phoenix’ and a map. His mother had been watching over him, finally stepping in to help.

A few days later, he was finally able to escape, taking with him all the money he could find in the apartment and the jewels he could sell. The time his absence was noticed, Tsukiko was on a plane to South Korea and soon crossed the bridge to his new life, leaving no trace behind.

“Amphibia” Emphasizes Chosen Families and Self-Acceptance

What if a Thai-American girl wakes up and finds herself in a world filled with talking frogs? Amphibia answers that question. Anne meets new friends, enemies, and tries to figure out her purpose in this strange world.

Amphibia is an animated adventure-fantasy-comedy series by Matt Braly, an animator of Thai descent. He is also known for directing episodes of Gravity Falls and Big City Greens.

As a warning, this recommendation discusses spoilers for all three seasons of Amphibia.

Amphibia centers around a 13-year-old Thai-American girl, Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song), who is transported by a music box to another world with her two best friends, Sasha Waybright (Anna Akana) and Marcy Wu (Haley Tju). In this wild land, filled with marshes and tropical environments, she meets talking frogs and other creatures, including a family of frogs named the Plantars.

This family is headed by the overbearing and traditional grandfather, Hop Pop (Bill Farmer). He has two kids-of-sorts: an excitable frog named Sprig (Justin Felbinger) and a spunky pollywog named Polly (Amanda Leighton). All of them live on a farm of their own in the close-knit town of Wartwood. As Anne bonds with the Plantars, she learns what friendship and being heroic means.

This all-ages animated series is filled with diversity, especially from its characters and voice actors. The latter are of Chinese, Indonesian, Pakistani, Japanese, and Thai descent. The show compliments this with wonderful animation, music, and background art.

Unsurprisingly, the series has been been nominated for four Annie Awards, one Daytime Emmy, and a GLAAD Media Award since it began airing in 2019. It includes some voice actors I'm familiar with, like Tress MacNeille and John DiMaggio, who voice characters in Disenchantment, as well as well-known gay actor George Takei.

Amphibia is more than a series centered on a girl who is adopted by a family of talking frogs. While there is the classic conflict of good vs. evil, there is also a focus on family separation, self-acceptance, and trauma. As I wrote previously, all of the main protagonists have trauma on same level or another, as the friendship between all three of them faces hardships and strains.

This is all mixed together with fantasy and sci-fi elements, and even occasionally situational comedy acts. These complex characters are written in such a way that you become invested and concerned about them, even after ending the series. The series also has plotlines focused on human and animal experimentation, and robots.

This series is part of a recent set of diverse Disney animated series. Others include The Ghost and Molly McGee, a supernatural fantasy, and will-be-ending horror comedy and fantasy The Owl House. Upcoming series such as Iwaju, Moana: The Series, Tiana, Cookies & Milk, Hailey's On It!, and Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur portend a continuation of this focus.

In the case of Amphibia, Braly based the series on his trips to Bangkok, Thailand where he thought he was an outsider. He also was inspired by video games like The Legend of Zelda and Chrono Trigger. In previous interviews he said he wanted to make the main character a Thai-American because there were few Thai protagonists in TV series or films that he watched as a kid. As a result, he has said he become influenced by the Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises.

In a December 2021 interview, Braly noted the themes of immigration, alienation, and xenophobia drawn from his own experiences. All of these themes are deeply integrated into the series. Some of this is heavily informed, according to Braly, by the 1990s series, Pepper Ann. Braly also noted that frogs were chosen for the series because they are metaphor for change and their connection to Thai culture.

Amphibia is rightly praised for illustrating issues like emotional manipulation, bullying, and delightful characters. The series could also be praised for broadening "ethnic-racial representations" like Craig of the Creek and Elena of Avalor. This is something that groups like the socially conservative family-oriented non-profit, Common Sense Media, would praise.

A 2021 report from the organization notes that when people of color are portrayed stereotypically, it causes harmful views to be promoted among White audiences. This is coupled with underrepresentation of specific groups, such as Latine and Indigenous people, and misrepresentation of others.

Little mentioned is LGBTQ representation in Amphibia. Although it isn't as direct as other recent series, like Dead End: Paranormal Park or The Owl House, Braly stated that in the show's finale, they left it open as to whether someone thinks of Sasha, Marcy, and Anne romantically or not, as he loves shipping. He called it the "greatest expression of love for characters."

This gives queer fans who ship Marcanne (Marcy and Anne), Sasharcy (Sasha and Marcy), Sashanne (Sasha and Anne), or even all three in a relationship together some solace. This the case even if this so-called "Calamity Trio" are only be "gal pals" in the show's canon.

Even so, Sasha was hinted as bisexual in the show's final episode, and confirmed as such by Braly, as I noted in an earlier post. Her voice actress, Akana, is bisexual herself. She voiced Daisy in magical girl esque Magical Friendship Girl Squad: Origins and Magical Girl Friendship Squad. In the case of Daisy, Akana argued that Daisy was bisexual. However, other crew members argued she was a lesbian, and possibly trans, leading to confusion among fans.

Coming back to Amphibia, Sasha joins other LGBTQ characters such as Frodrick Toadstool and Toadie who were confirmed as a gay couple by the show's creator. More significantly is Yunan (Zahra Fazal) and Lady Olivia (Michelle Dockery) as lesbian couple. There's also Ally and Jess who run an Internet video channel together. Their colors are based off the bisexual and pansexual flags.

It is also implied that Mr. X, voiced by RuPaul, is gay, and there are some other minor LGBTQ characters. Similar to Sasha, the sexual identities of these characters are never directly stated. Mr. X is an effeminate FBI agent assisted by a silent assistant named Jenny. After Anne and frog family escape to Amphibia, Anne's birth family convince Mr. X to hear them out and to be on the same side against Andrias. This results in the military and FBI assisting Anne and her friends in the final episode.

The relationship of Yunan and Olivia, was embraced by reviewers like Jade King, who calls herself "TheGamer’s Queen of Gay Cartoons." Braly told King that the ship of these two characters was their favorite ship. He called it "very organic" and "awesome." Fans were jubilant about the news, and fully embraced it. It undoubtedly helped that Fazal was inspired by the protagonist of Darkwing Duck in voicing the character.

Considering that the final episode has a ten year time-skip, it makes the series ripe for a possible spin-off or continuation that happens in that time skip, with different protagonists than this series. While some are conflicted about a spin-off, the show could go a route a la Steven Universe Future, focusing on the aftermath of a victory, with Anne, Marcy, and Sasha having to pick up the pieces.

All three seasons of Amphibia are currently streaming on Disney+, YouTube TV, and Prime Video.

That's why I thought a little scene from his everyday life like this one would be a good choice. I drew it is such a way to give it this "So fun!" "So delicious!" vibe.

Together with his dog, in his apartment in Korea. The breed is Siberian Husky. At the staff meeting, I've heard that "Seung Gil isn't interested in fashion", so I gave his everyday clothes a bit unfortunate look. At first, I had a plan to show him slacking off at home in a sweatsuit, but I thought that would be too much (laugh), so instead I drew this scene.

JJ on his day off, spending time at a hotel in Singapore popular with celebrities. I drew this scene as a "I'm going to a party!" kind of scene, JJ showing off how successful his private life is. He's a guy surrounded by girls all the time, but still he thinks about his fans' feelings, so all the girls are turning their back to the camera. The setting for this scene is that only JJ should face the camera.

[Notes: I wonder if JJ's character maybe changed a lot during the production...? Here he seems to be a playboy, but later the setting was that he's a good Christian. Did he change his sinful ways? Or is he simply a hypocrite...? Or is his willpower so strong that he can surround himself with girls all the time and do nothing...? So many questions🤔]

Who in your family has been married the longest? (and how long?) As far as I know, my paternal grandparents – they'll be hitting 54 years next year. My maternal grandparents also remained married for I think around 52 years, but my grandpa passed away in 2015.

Do you have any Eastern European ancestry? I very much doubt that.

Where is your car parked right now? Our carport.

When did you last travel alone? Where were you going? I've never traveled alone, but my last trip without my family was in June when I went to Bangkok with friends. I'm still in awe we got to pull that off, and all for a concert.

Do you take your shoes off when you come inside? Of course. My Asian ancestors and I would find it horrifying otherwise.

What’s your favorite movie series? Twilight is probably the only movie series I've seen from start to finish – and I will do it over and over again until my dying breath haha.

How are you feeling today? A little stressed on one side, but I'm also actively trying to calm myself down given it's the weekend and I deserve at least two days to relax and take some weight off my shoulders hahaha.

How good/bad was the quality of education you received in high school? I'd say it was pretty excellent – it's some of the teachers that were the problem. Some of them liked to take things so personally (blatantly disliking students for no reason, like wtf?) it felt so ridiculous to be there and watch it just happen. I was super annoyed with it from the onset that just to amuse and distract myself I'd also just subtly let them know back that I didn't like them and what they were doing. I'm sure I hit a few nerves during my time there but it wasn't like they could do anything because I did well in my classes and held a few leadership positions lol.

What was the most interesting year of your life, and why? 2021 was very fascinating. I went from planning a Recklessly Permanent Deed to finding BTS, turning my life around, meeting new friends, and realizing what happiness feels like.

What was the first social media site you ever used? I don't think it counts as social media but it was a local forum marketed for tween/teen girls.

Do you have any exes you really regret dating? I wouldn't say the regret fully points to the ex per se, but more so on the time wasted. I invested so much (ultimately) unnecessary effort and energy when I could've been doing other things. What brand of laundry detergent do you use? We use Tide.

WAGHHH this show changed me as a person… rivals to friends to lovers, romeo and juliet, secretly dating… its just sooooo good. its about pat and pran, who have lived next to each other their entire lives BUT their parents Hate each other. occurs mostly in college where they live across from each other now (sighs.. fated lovers…) AND their friend groups hate each other too. rivals 2x… however theyre forced to work together because the university is threatening punishment if the two groups dont stop fighting.

this show seriously is just SOOO good and i relate to pran on a personal level. both like… autistically and loving pat-ingly (ohm pawat.. whew hes Such a man)

2. Where Your Eyes Linger (available on viki? or dramacool if you want to pirate it lol)

OK a lot of people rate this kind of mid in kbls BUTTT its forever my favorite idc. its about a chaebol and his bodyguard who was essentially adopted by the family for the Sole purpose of being his bodyguard. set in high school and features just the most wonderful yearning and also for some reason they only have one bed in the apartment they share. goes into power structures and stuff a bit which i thought was cool :) basically the bodyguard has been in love with the chaebol his whole life but never acted on it because 1. thats not his place and 2. taejoo is Straight. he yearns quietly until Uh Oh… someone starts taking kang gook (the bodyguard)’s attention away from taejoo and he gets jealous.

3. I Told Sunset About You (available on viki. i watched it on dramacool)

AUOGGH.. this show will tear you into pieces. its just such a BEAUTIFUL and cinematic experience i love it so much… notable things to mention: features cheating and an obscene amount of crying. i love this show but i cannot do crying scenes. it was a struggle fjsjdjfjdjdjf anyways this show is about two childhood friends who are now rivals. theyre trying to get into college and taking classes outside of school to prepare, where they meet each other for the first time in quite a few years. teh is insanely jealous of oh aew for being popular amongst other things and it causes a lot of. tension. teh has a girl hes been flirting with for years and oh aew has a guy he likes but they both feel an INTENSE pull to each other. one that isnt easy on their relationships or theirselves.

OH!!! also this show features a ton of thai-chinese culture and is set in phuket as opposed to almost every other thai show being set in bangkok.

also i dont recommend the sequel. i havent watched it but it has some. problematic tropes that leave a bad taste in my mouth. also just destroys the characters! idk thats just my opinion though im sure SOMEONE likes that show..

4. Until We Meet Again (available on youtube)

ok. first of all. this show is about the red string of fate and reincarnated lovers. im warning you now that it literally starts with a double suicide scene and its. its a lot. HOWEVER. i do really like this show!! its sweet and does justice to both its trope and the couple who commit suicide. basically pharm, a stick of a guy who experiences panic attacks and nightmares that he cant explain, enters college and meets dean, the captain of the swim team. they both definitely know something is up and have feelings for each other but they have to navigate flashbacks and discovering what happened to their past selves (in and korn). ALSO has a side couple whos show is currently airing!!!! im not putting between us on here since its still airing but i do recommend it :)

ugh second warning. this show ALSO has soooo much crying……….

5. Gaya Sa Pelikula (available on youtube)

when i say this show changed me as a person.... god i genuinely have sooooooooooooo many emotions about this show. it follows karl, an architecture student. he moves into his apartment and.. some guy runs in and puts a hand over his mouth and tells him to be quiet. No he is not getting robbed but he doesn't know that. QUEUE fake dating and cohabitation to appease vlad (the guy who ran in)'s sister. genuinely has some of the best most incredible characters ever made and features incredible depictions of internalized homophobia and struggling to live your own life rather than the one someone else made for you. god just thinking about this show is makingme emotional i miss karl and vlad :(

i think this show was supposed to have a season two but something happened with the cast/production crew (im pretty sure it was SA but im not sure) and so theres no sequel. it has a cliffhanger/bittersweet ending but genuinely i think that shouldnt impact whether or not someone watches because its sad YES but its just actually such a good ending and i would have hated if they ended it another way. one of the realest and most human shows ive watched. the BEST depiction of the gay experience ive ever seen. genuinely please watch this show just for that it made me cry and laugh and sob and giggle with how nuanced and thoughtful it is about gayness

6. cherry magic (ITS AVAILABLE ON CRUNCHYROLL??? i watched it on dramacool. lmao)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH the movie sequel just came out and i haven't seen it yet but im soooo excited for it. cherry magic is one of the most endearing shows but it doesn't sacrifice character development or plot for cuteness. the premise is that when you turn 30, and youre still a virgin, you turn into a mind reader. which is a big premise to sell i KNOW. but they NAIL IT. adachi (the mindreader) is introverted, insecure, and uncomfortable in his skin, but his new powers force him to come to terms with himself and exist as a person. he avoids touch as much as possible as everyones thoughts can be A Lot BUT he brushes against the office hottie/mvp and finds out that he (kurosawa) has a crush on HIM. adachi doesnt understand but tries to figure out why this incredible guy could love a shy and awkward person like him. features an aroace side character and a side couple i ignored (save for the cat. udon lovers unite) its just such a sweet but powerful show and i love the characters so much :((((

OHM PAWATS BACK IM SORRY HES JUST MY FAV AND ALSO THE BEST ACTOR EVER. anyways this show has SUCH a soft place in my heart i truly think its such a special show. its about a ghost who is never visited at his grave and therefore cant pass on and a guy who can see ghosts. Thun has seen ghosts for most of his life but he hasn't really talked to any. Mes has been dead for awhile and longs to have someone SEE him and TALK to him. when thun is a kid, he sees mes and leaves him some offerings. but he doesn't return for a very long time. thuns now a college kid and when he returns to the graveyard, he finally talks to mes and they click. from there, they work together to figure out how mes died to try and help his spirit move on, but develop feelings along the way. has the most HEARTBREAKING coming out scene ever. ohm pawat seriously deserves so many awards. ALSO has a lot of thai-chinese culture!!
