things to keep in mind- the colors are taken from their concept art since it was flat, the heights are taken from the only character bios we have of them. i tried very hard to stay objective and not shove any of my design hcs in there even if theres some things i dont personally like these sheets arent scaled down at all so i hope this post doesnt explode

Nope. I do have a collab planned far far far faaaaar in the future, but I personally do not enjoy drawing the spinoff and I don't have ANY ideas for it like ever, so I have no plans of continuing it myself/in an official capacity. It tends to confuse people about what's canon/what's not, too, and I'd like to avoid that :/

I usually do try and keep up with what everyone else wants to see ( and for some reason a lot of people like the spinoff?) But its so far out of my interest zone that I just really can't draw it smh

Writing the script for the collabs has already been so so difficult cause there's just like...no ideas.

And also a funny plot hole is that Leo in the spinoff could literally go back to his time whenever he wanted. There's like 0 stakes. Idk I'm rambling but the TLDR is no lmao

I'm sure I've made this exact post before but brotherhood following the manga so closely is actually its greatest weakness because the thing about an adaptation is you have to translate the source material in such a way that it functions in a new medium... things that work in a comic won't necessarily work in a show like the most obvious example of this is how the fma manga has a ton of cutaway gags that work because it's a comic! everyone reads at their own pace so having a random extra silly side panel isn't going to disrupt the entire flow. but when brotherhood tries to directly replicate the jokes in a format they weren't meant for they fall flat and it is so disruptive to the show. And like they choose to put those in but then cut out a ton of other scenes along the way for the sake of accelerating the plot, but the stuff they cut out is all character study and worldbuilding which hurts the final product even more. and you see this on a macro and micro level like not only the overall progression of the story across the entire series and the way they speed through the portion that 03 covered, but also the handling of certain scenes, particularly ones that are in both shows as the difference becomes very obvious. The most obvious example I can point to is ed and al's human transmutation attempt. idk 03 is so well directed and then in brotherhood they were just like we hate vibes. and some of that does just come down to my personal preference but I'm also not wrong... to be honest...

One thing that I think muddies the water re: SQQ acting like a buffoon is that he’s much more physically expressive in the donghua? In a very comical and memorable way, like chugging the medicine he tries to give Luo Binghe when the system is about to doc him points, noticing it’s for external use only, and then visibly fainting in front of Ming Fan and Luo Binghe. He’s much more of a clown, and it’s mostly in good fun, even if it’s not accurate to the book. Thinking about it more, my ideal adaptation would have SQQ properly maintaining his immortal facade at all times, but also include an expressive chibi version of himself acting out his inner thoughts and yelling at the system constantly. Only the audience would see his flailing, and also probably SQH when he’s introduced. Also! Showing him get more expressive with Binghe as book 3 goes on and he lets out more of his real personality around him.

that's a really good point about the donghua! I'm charmed by how SQQ is in the donghua because he's such a fucking loser (affectionate) but it definitely isn't very accurate to the novel. tbh the difference between SQQ's inner monologue vs outward appearance/actions is one of the things that makes it hard to adapt from a written form! having a little chibi SQQ to express his inner thoughts is an option, or hiding his expressions behind his fan or waiting until he's alone to scream into a pillow or something lsdkjflksdjf it's tough! it's really one of those things that works best as a book, which is such a shame because GOD i want to see so much of it visually

also him being more expressive with Binghe as their relationship develops is really good :') especially post-canon! Binghe complains that SQQ smiles more at other people, can you imagine what it'll be like once SQQ starts letting more of those walls down and fully grins at him while teasing him? I think Binghe would just straight up short circuit for a second

had the same feeling once i realized ppl literally meant they're seeing images in their heads. pretty crazy how different we could all think and not realize. hearing is the only sense i can imagine so the way you and I process information must be completely different in shape and there was a high chance we would never realize

the fact that in all of human history no two people have ever had the same experience of the universe just makes me go crazy if i think about it too long. your consciousness is a completely different shape from my consciousness! i will never know how you see red and you will never know how i see it! fuck!
