These links focus on Palestinian-run grassroots initiatives that will reach Gazans on the ground, so all of these except eSIMs, PCRF, MAP, OOB are by Palestinians. Donating to international organizations is currently not ideal, as aid is still being stopped at the border. Please focus on Palestinian-run initiatives on the ground in Gaza instead.
Remember, small donations always add up. Any amount counts, even $1!
If you are unable to donate yourself, you can even adopt a fundraiser campaign to regularly boost and make materials promoting it online, or print posters and flyers about Palestinian fundraisers to encourage others to donate.

What Does Competing With COVID Do to an Athlete’s Body? - Published Sept 5, 2024
By Julie Stewart Medically reviewed by Pritish Tosh, MD
Pushing through to win a medal may feel worth it in the moment. But there are real risks.
While the Olympics were touted as the first “normal” Games “after” COVID, we soon realized that wasn’t the case: Throughout the two-and-a-half week competition in July and August, more than 40 athletes tested positive for it—including Noah Lyles, who was wheeled off the track after winning bronze in the 200 meters. And that’s just the athletes we know about: With no strict rules on reporting COVID cases, it’s hard to know how many Olympians actually were affected.
As the Paralympics continues, it’s likely the spread could too, since again, there are no restrictions on competing with COVID. While doing so isn’t against the rules, does that mean it’s safe? We asked experts to break down for us what you need to know about pushing hard while your body is fighting COVID. Here’s what they said.
1. Your endurance might take a hit. Even if you give it your best effort, your performance might not be nearly where you hoped it’d be. That’s because for so many athletic pursuits—swimming, sprinting, rushing down the court, heaving a shot put—you need a solid amount of oxygen to make its way into your body to power your efforts.
“When you're sick, the infection is assumed [to be] everywhere in your body,” Jennifer Abeles, DO, a clinical assistant professor in the department of medicine at the University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, tells SELF. And in the case of COVID-19, your lungs are a common site for it; as a result, your respiratory function can decrease.
“Your lungs are in charge of bringing in all your oxygen, so you may be more short of breath,” Dr. Abeles says. “You may not be able to accomplish the same feats with your exercise that you are when you're healthy, because the organs, the lungs, are not working at their ultimate ability.”
It’s hard to say exactly how a current infection affects these capabilities for a pretty obvious reason: There’s not a whole lot of research done on exercising with COVID, well, because most folks don’t feel like exercising when they have COVID, Kristine Erlandson, MD, a professor of medicine-infectious disease at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, tells SELF. But there are a good number of studies that look at it after the fact: One 2022 study of elite soccer players found their VO2 max—a measure of how efficiently their bodies use oxygen during exercise—was reduced from baseline up to two months after infection. And a 2024 study of pro basketball players found they needed to take in more oxygen to do the same steady-state effort as before a mild or asymptomatic COVID infection, suggesting they’d fatigue earlier.
2. Your heart could be affected. Between the physical demands and the thrill of competition, a once-in-a-lifetime athletic event can already be pretty taxing for your heart. Then COVID adds additional stress, especially in people with pre-existing cardiovascular disease—the infection sets off an inflammatory cascade that can damage heart tissue.
In rare cases, the virus can directly infect and inflame your ticker. That’s the “myocarditis” you probably heard folks talk about at the beginning of the pandemic. (But this is super rare, especially in athletes; even in the earlier days of the pandemic, researchers estimated the rate of COVID-related myocarditis to be around 1%, according to a 2022 review and meta-analysis.)
But even if we’re not talking actual damage, the infection can still affect your heart.
“The other concern is there can sometimes be just some irritability of the heart after COVID,” Dr. Erlandson says. “[You] may be more likely to have irregular heart rate or more likely to have a rapid heart rate response with exercise when you're still kind of sick or not feeling well.” And that can play a role in your performance by increasing fatigue and decreasing endurance—and having everything just flat-out feel harder.
We still don’t know how bad the combo of exertion and acute COVID might be for your cardiovascular system, says Dr. Erlandson. Like we said, there’s just not a lot of data to draw from. However, “we are concerned about potential damage to the heart or putting someone at risk of going into a dangerous heart rhythm or causing more pain and causing symptoms to last longer,” she says.
3. You might stress your system at the very time it needs rest. Both COVID and exercise—especially the intense kind—separately can increase inflammation. This double whammy could, in theory, make recovery from the virus more difficult, Hector Bonilla, MD, a clinical associate professor of medicine-infectious disease at Stanford University and codirector of Stanford’s Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome Clinic, tells SELF.
There’s not enough scientific evidence to say for sure whether exercising intensely with COVID can make you feel worse, slow your recovery, or increase your risk of long COVID, which is defined by symptoms that persist for at least three months. But one 2023 review in Frontiers in Physiology does suggest that even mild to moderate exercise during the acute stages of COVID could “aggravate the inflammatory response and further worsen the COVID-19 symptoms.” And based on Dr. Bonilla’s experience treating patients, his advice is “don’t add additional stress to your body.”
While generally healthy people have a lower risk of long COVID, Dr. Bonilla says it’s plausible stressing your system with hard exercise, like a marathon, ultramarathon, or century bike ride, could contribute to long COVID. He has seen some athletes get COVID, recover, and then develop long COVID symptoms a few weeks later when they start working out again.
With all the unknowns still out there with COVID, it’s safer to pull back when you’re sick. There’s just not a lot of solid research out there showing that exercising with COVID is safe—let alone pushing at your max, 100%, win-me-a-medal-please effort.
“I think anytime we’re sick, we have to just give pause,” Dr. Abeles says. This holds even more true if you have a fever. That should be considered a flat-out dealbreaker, she says.
“Anyone with a fever, I would say that would be a done; you should not be exercising,” she says. “You should be giving your body the grace to recover and take the energy and time to fight the infection that it’s dealing with, and not trying to add a stress on it that it just does not need at this time.”
What’s more, depending on what your exercise of choice is and how solitary it may be, you also have to remember that your session might not affect only you: Your “mild” case could become someone else’s nightmare. “You don’t know how others will respond, how they’ll be affected if they get COVID,” says Dr. Abeles. “Some people may not even know it. Some people won’t actually get it. But some people who are exposed to people who have a mild case can get a severe case.”
So hold off until you’re feeling better; then you can start to think about your exercise routine again—little by little.
“We usually recommend that people wait about three days until after their symptoms have resolved before they return to exercise,” says Dr. Erlandson. “Then at that time, it’s gradually increasing until they feel back to their baseline.” You want to tune into your body during your comeback, says Dr. Abeles. Be especially cognizant of any fatigue or pain after your session. That can be a sign of post-exertional malaise, a hallmark of long COVID.
If you’re feeling okay, you can continue progressing. Start by adding frequency, then intensity. This can look like plugging in an additional easy session a week versus turning a jog into a speed workout, for instance. “You don’t want to go out and do a hardcore HIIT workout the day after,” she says.

Hello! Stopping in to give a quick tip, something that really helps us and could help others
I know, every system has heard "keep a journal" and not everyone can... but even if you can't keep a super detailed journal of your front and system and this and that... keep a medical / medication journal!!!
-keep a small notebook either on you or where you keep your medications (could also be your phone as im sure there's apps that do this too)
-if you take a prescription, log that you've already taken it so that another sys member doesn't accidentally try to retake it or ingest something that could potentially interact harmfully
-if you take any other medications, log it, how much and what time so another sys member will know when it's okay to take another dose
-if you want, you can go the extra mile like we do and also log the reason we took a certain medicine... (ex. Ibuprofen for headache, Tums for stomach ache) so that you can show your doctor if certain things keep happening or if something gets worse, you can go back and point out when it started
-you can also jot down any other things when they happen, such as you fell down the stairs one day (true story) or you felt incredibly sick for a few days...
Don't feel pressured to keep up with this every single minute of everyday... but, systems with bad enough amnesia (or anyone w amnesia) should definitely keep track of your medications to prevent any unfortunate mishaps.
We keep both a physical book and our phone, though our phone is usually used for reminding/logging for daily prescriptions
Example of how we write ours;
02/12/24
9:00 am
[Insert daily prescription] ✔️
8:30 pm
headache
Back ache (lower back, dull shooting pain)
Stomach ache
9:15 pm
ibuprofen, 200 MG, headache + backpain
Tums, 500 MG, indigestion
Etc etc
After an unfortunate event of a sys member taking our meds, and another sys member taking it again because they didn't remember we'd already taken our daily dose, we began to keep a journal...
Stay safe, keep up with your medications!!!
(I hope I worded this all ok, I'm very tired rn)
-Seraph Skies sys

“Wanda Roe” (USA 2006)
Information from the CDC and the FDA revealed multiple deaths from the chemical abortion pill that were unknown to the general public. One of them was Wanda Roe.
Wanda, who died in the Western United States, was yet another woman killed by Planned Parenthood. She was given 200 mg of mifepristol orally, then 800 mcg of misoprostol vaginally.
Wanda died from an infection of Clostridium perfringens, the pathogen that causes gas gangrene.
Dr. Janet Woodcock, Deputy Commissioner for Operations at the FDA, confirmed multiple deaths from the dangerous drug that had been previously unknown to the general public. Most of the people killed are still unidentified.
Please note that the CDC never approved the abortion pill as a vaginal suppository, but Planned Parenthood commonly used this method on their clients anyway. A PP spokesperson even informed the New York Times that against the FDA’s warnings to strictly stick to the only approved regimen, they were going to continue instructing clients to use the abortion pill in particularly hazardous ways, such as sending it home to self-administer without medical supervision.
At a CDC event, it was noted by an OB/GYN speaker that “Mifepristone impairs innate host responses and may predispose to lethal infections” and that the estimated/reported rate of death was much higher than the reported death rate for surgical abortion. One of the recommended strategies for risk reduction that was ruled as a more effective option was to eliminate the use of the drug.

Another Road – Expedition Overview
This is a general look at the direction and structure of the Atlantis expedition in my AU "Another Road" — I thought I might as well share my own ideas and concepts for a slightly different SGA setting here!
The team embarks on their journey about a year later, August 2005, after a 16 month period of training and preparation, following the discovery of Atlantis.
With an initial count of 200 volunteers, the expedition is comprised of several researchers previously stationed at the antarctic outpost, as well as additional candidates and military personnel approved by the IOA and HWC.
Expectations
Given what they have thus far learned about the Ancients and the experiences gained in the Stargate program, there are a number of potential points of interest and expected risks to consider, before stepping foot into another galaxy.
As an international scientific project, the primary focus of the expedition is the gathering of information pertaining to the Ancients and research of their technological advancements. However, due to the unknown nature of the Pegasus galaxy, the research of any extraterrestrial life and technology is a general goal.
Peaceful, undisruptive exploration may be the ideal direction of such an undertaking, but the International Committee and Homeworld Command have come to agree, that a military component would be necessary as a precaution. Should they find it unwarranted, the selected personnel could simply aid in emergencies and the overall operations of the group.
The 16 month buffer serves to prepare for anything the team might find on the other side of the event horizon — be that a thriving society, or another abandoned outpost left to sleep in a wasteland. All members would've been required to learn the Ancient language (Alteran) and the basics of Gate travel, if they weren't familiar already.
Since the Ancients are genetic cousins, originating from Earth in this setting and have left a grand network of habitable locations throughout the Milky Way, it gives our team the hope of establishing a reliable base, even if they don't find anything alive.
The possibility of no return is a risk they are well aware of.
Composition
Each and every volunteer has been selected and vetted by the agencies involved, either with Weir's recommendation or approval.
Key factors are an extensive understanding of relevant fields (particularly regarding the Stargate and Ancients) and/or the possession of the ATA gene. There is much overlap of expertise among expedition members, the idea being to employ a wide array of knowledge and skills in as few people as possible.
Senior staff manages the overall decisions and is comprised of the representative leader of their given division, with Dr. Weir as head of the expedition as a whole.
The team features seven divisions, color-coded for convenience and each with departments as subsections, covering specific fields.
Cultural Division (red)

Military Division (black)
CO: Marshall Sumner / John Sheppard (later)
Offer assistance to the other divisions and the expedition as a whole, cover following responsibilities:
Security
Logistics
Emergency Management
Emergency Medical Treatment
Decontamination
Military Operations
-> Initial numbers: 84
*unoffical characters added to fill these positions.
Management
The team is provided with enough supplies to cover each division's general needs, both work-related and personal, for about a year. If necessary, their use of equipment and gear can easily be extended, but water and food production would depend on the environment and resources they're met with.
Complete, long-term self-sufficiency should be possible, with access to the needed materials, but is not the intended goal of this expedition.
An emergency transmitter would've been used to send a signal to Earth, in case they cannot dial back and have found themselves trapped, with no means to support themselves beyond what they brought along. It would've taken a while to be received, but by then the Daedalus should've been fully operational and able to retrieve them, before their supplies run out.
If they are not heard from in any way within their first year (taking communications delay into account, given their distance) Earth would've presumed them dead and the mission a failure. However, if the mission was at least partially a success and they have access to safe food and water, but still no way to return, a number of satellites would've been launched to act as relay stations between the galaxies.
Sending a ship to and fro would be off the table, unless it was really worth the cost of such a long trip — say, if it was to rescue the group, or to transport artifacts and materials of significant value. The IOA would be reluctant to send off one of Earth's limited number of interstellar vessels, while they have more pressing uses among our own stars.
Either way, unless they found more convenient alternatives, the expedition would've expected to rely mostly on themselves.

Alyssa Tirrell at MMFA:
In late December, USA Boxing released a new set of guidelines for the inclusion of trans competitors, and right-wing media responded by criticizing the regulations, relying on anti-trans tropes and misinformation in their coverage. GOP members of Congress have since introduced twin legislation that promises to ban all trans competitors from the Olympic and amateur levels in any sport, citing the new regulations as a motivating concern and repeating the anti-trans framing popularized by right-wing media's backlash.
While the USA Boxing guidelines are a departure from a trend of sports organizations banning trans participation, the requirements are considered stringent. Athletes under the age of 18 must compete “as their birth gender,” and adult competitors are required to obtain genital surgery and regular hormone testing, both in the four years preceding competition and throughout any competitive period. Nevertheless, right-wing media are attacking the rules, which USA Boxing says build on the consensus of several medical groups and international athletic federations. On January 3, Fox News' America's Newsroom co-host Dana Perino referred to the eligibility requirements for trans female boxers as “nonsense.” Hosts and guests repeatedly referred to trans women as “men” or “guys,” and co-host Bill Hemmer quoted former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines' claim that “it will take a woman getting killed before these misogynistic fools wake up.” Fox’s Outnumbered also said a woman could die because of the new rules, arguing that the regulations would lead to “one-punch killings.” Co-host Harris Faulkner cited Gaines' campaign against the inclusion of trans swimmers, misgendering Gaines' former competitor Lia Thomas in the process and expanding the panel's criticism to trans inclusion in noncontact athletic competitions as well.
Despite such concerns over safety, coverage disregarded USA Boxing's medical citations, which include the recommendations of Boston Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine and Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital. Instead, for instance, The Ingraham Angle platformed the perspective of UFC fighter Colby Covington, who argued that “it doesn't matter what their hormone levels or pronouns are,” because “when they dig up their bones in 200 years, their bones won't leave pronouns.” (Actually, archeologists are capable of imputing that a skeleton may have belonged to a transgender person after more than 200 years.) [...] USA Boxing responded to backlash by restating that it is in compliance with federal law. The following day, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) introduced twin legislation in both the House and the Senate that would “prohibit any governing body recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) from allowing men to participate in any athletic event intended for females.”
A joint press release cited the USA Boxing guidelines and repeated right-wing media's anti-trans framing. Tuberville's statement claimed that “men should not be competing in women’s sports at any level—and especially not in a sport like boxing. Whether in little league or the Olympics, it’s unsafe, it’s unfair, and it’s just plain wrong. This bill will ensure that the Olympics are fair to American women who train their whole lives to represent our country on the world stage.” The press release also cited the support of a number of anti-trans organizations, including the Alliance Defending Freedom, the Independent Women's Forum, and the Independent Council on Women’s Sports and quoted several anti-trans figures, including American Principles Project President Terry Schilling and — yet again — Riley Gaines.
Right-wing media pundits, led by anti-trans grifter Riley Gaines, is leading the backlash against USA Boxing's trans-inclusive policy.

9, 12, 13, 23, 25, 31, 44, 60
For Bunny or Leon or both! I loves them equally 💕
FALLOUT OC ASKS
thank you! i’m always ready to talk about either of them. under a cut again bc this got long…….i love them dearly
9. Where did they grow up? Where do they currently reside?
bunny was born and raised near palm springs, california. she ended up moving to los angeles when her modeling career began taking off, and eventually she also got an apartment in new york as well, often traveling between the two cities for work. she was particularly fond of her new york penthouse. however after she and nate got married he was very adamant about them living in suburban massachusetts even tho she offered to buy them a nice place in boston as a compromise, so obviously she ended up in sanctuary hills.
leon’s from the capital wasteland, raised in vault 101. he stays in the capital wasteland for a lil longer after the events of fo3 but he eventually leaves to go wander the wasteland and offer his medical services. so he doesn’t have a permanent home, but he’ll stay in certain areas/his destinations for extended lengths of time, averaging from several months for up to a year depending on how badly he’s needed. he’s been all over the US, and i think the longest place he’s stayed that wasn’t the capital wasteland was along the southeast coast. stayed there for a bit over a year before moving on, truthfully bc he just ended up making some good friends there. he travels back to the capital wasteland from time to time tho! it’s where he was when maccready comes back for duncan to take him to the commonwealth; leon was the doctor treating duncan/who administered the medicine and the three of them travel to the commonwealth together (thus starting leon’s arc in that area).
12. Can they read, write, and/or do math?
yes. i think they both enjoy reading, but i think leon’s probably better at math than her. not that she can’t do it, bc she’s fine at math, it’s just not exactly a huge part of her life. whereas leon has to do math every day dealing w dosages of meds and things like that. truthfully his fave subject is science. anatomy. bunny always loved english tho.
on a similar train of thought, bunny started modeling right out of high school so she never went to college (much to the disappointment of her parents), nor does she know what she would’ve majored in had she gone. she was so determined to become a model, like there was no other career choice in her mind. leon was always nerdy and set on going into medicine so he similarly had a bit of tunnel vision when it came to his dreams.
13. What is the most frightening experience they have endured?
i mean i’d say their respective plots. bunny waking up 200+ years in the future after watching her husband get shot right in front of her and her baby taken away. i think she still has nightmares related to it; similarly leading up to and after the birth of her second child i just know that anxiety was in full force again. she was not letting the baby out of her sight or arms for those first few months bc she was just so afraid of losing her child again.
likewise i’d say for leon losing his dad, finding him after such a harrowing journey only to have to watch him die was just as frightening for him. ten years later he’s still running from his grief. in a more classically frightening sense tho i think the first time he ever saw a centaur. saw one crawling around the ruined city, the fleshy sounds scouring over rubble, the way his blood went cold at the sight of it. it’s why they’re something he still thinks about to this day. it’s a feeling he’ll never forget.
23. How do they feel about physical touch / affection?
bunny is a very physically affectionate person. gives hugs and chaste kisses very easily and openly. if she cares about you you’re getting a kiss on the cheek don’t complain don’t make a face. also the type to wipe dirt off someone’s face, fix their hair, etc.
leon’s fine w things like hugs and while he doesn’t mind taking the initiative when it comes to things like flirting, he’s nowhere near as casually physically affectionate as bunny is. he wants to make sure someone’s comfortable first before doing anything like that.
25. Are they quick to trust others?
bunny is not and never really was but she’s great at pretending like she does. her whole life ppl have always had other intentions or wanted something more so she similarly adapted and learned how to manipulate and read ppl. learned how to gain trust. BUT when she’s in a decidedly vulnerable stage in her life she does become more open to trusting others especially if they show her kindness. she latched onto nick like immediately. but other than those specific instances, no not at all.
leon is inherently more trusting. he’s extremely intelligent and perceptive, however he’s someone who believes in seeing the good in others and will be much more open to trusting ppl than bunny. he’s also someone tho that has learned how to gain others’ trust bc it’s kinda part of his job; he literally has to take strangers’ lives in his hands.
31. What is their goal in life? What impact would they like to leave when they’re gone?
bunny just wants a decent life for her family and friends. she wants those she loves to be safe, even after she’s gone. she wants to be sure they have a tomorrow.
leon just wants to leave the wasteland a little nicer than he found it. he’s not looking for any sorta recognition or fame or money or anything, he just believes in the power of people coming together and working together and caring for each other.
i think leon and bunny are similar in the regard that neither see themselves as leaders. while bunny’s goals are decidedly smaller and more focused on her own community rather than the larger wasteland as a whole like leon, both of them have never really considered themselves “leaders” in the traditional sense. bunny IS technically the general of the minutemen, but she actually rejected preston’s offer the first time. and even now she still actively involves him and others in decision-making. ultimately leon and bunny both just care about making sure that (hopefully) this next world will be a little softer.
44. What is their favorite smell?
bunny loves musky, woody scents. stuff that’s probably considered more “masculine” but god she loves it. when she still had perfumes and stuff she’d opt for more flowery things for her own image but all her scents at home like candles or incense were those more earthy smells. always bought nate those kinds of scents so she could always smell it on him instead.
leon isn’t picky about scents; in his line of work anything that doesn’t smell like gore is alright in his book. tho honestly he’s 100% used to the smell of like. infection, rotten flesh, etc. at this point. typical wasteland smells. doesn’t even register in his nose anymore. that said i think he would like citrusy scents.
60. Are they religious? Spiritual?
bunny’s never really been the religious type. i think it’s been like. a vague background presence in her life to some degree, but never something she’s ever really believed herself. never had an impact on her and never will.
leon on the other hand was raised by a religious father and that’s always been part of his life, so he’s grown to have a very. strained relationship w faith. he’s such a science-minded person so he does often try to rationalize things scientifically, but he’s also someone who really believes in the supernatural (after debunking it in his mind through scientific means, ofc). he’s open-minded to a lot, but more so to the paranormal. and as he’s grown older i think his faith in any sort of god has kinda waned. he wants to believe in people and community rather than some higher power.
that said when he did the GOAT test he did initially get placed as the vault chaplain and i genuinely think that’s just something that’s stuck in his mind even all these years later in like a Are You Fucking Kidding Me type way. yes he can still quote some scripture no don’t ask him to.
#asks#thank you!! these were fun to answer#goes for anyone but i’m absolutely still taking these if ppl wanna send some#or just wanna send me anything#bunny santos (sole survivor)#leon nollette (lone wanderer)

Hey what are your favorite medic operators
Heya! Sure, MEEEEEDICs it is then:
#1 Forever - GAVIAL.
Day One 'Where Are Your Crocgirls, Gacha. Give Them To Me' I really felt impatient for the first week w/ friendship coins I'd already gotten most copies of secret power princess Estelle before first Gavial token redeem. Spent two-thirds of the first Main Story Arc with her S2 even if it only charges enough for 2 shots most maps simply because Everything Heals. Our rough-housing Chief-of-Medicine has always been incredible. Absolutely love her way before her incredible side story events she's just so cool.
#2 Forever: Perfumer, Lena.
Global passive heal that works on erstwhile-unhealable targets like Mudmud/NPCs is a powerful thing. Her Convalescence Garden is the most important hub on the landship besides the Medical Wing honestly with just how many operators quietly garden side-by-side as we're aware of. Incredibly cool that she's the artist's longstanding OC ported over to Terra. She's delightful and a rather important MEdic to have with you. Aegean kissies.
#3 Forever: PAPRIKAAAA
AWESOME, SMOOTH. LIKE. BUTTER! Of course she has to rank decently high, she is a great lil beast. Funky new subclass with potential; adorable dork that definitely adopted a certain mean goth merc duo as family but can't be honest due to the imminent teasing involved hehehe. Chapter 11 might've been a minor whiplash due to what goes on there since we had limited knowledge but it's gonna turn out alright. That Trust 200 file sure was something sweet.
#4: Ansel
Our friend Ansel. You know him. Bnuuy. The first 'heal additional target' type medic. Endearingly hard-working. Make him blush. Good boy. Absolutely normal.
#5: Whisperain
For the Therapist subclass I actually tend towards Ceylon or Purestream over her and Lumen but they're all real helpful. But the haunting elegance and melancholy within her design, her VA Saori Goto voicing Kiryu Moeka from Steins;Gate, the immortality despite memory death, she's fascinating and favourable in her own regards. Rather underrated and uncommon against the competition but please appreciate the jellyfish more.
Honourable Mentions: Breeze; Warfarin; Hibiscus
Dishonourable Mention: Kal'tsit

Student Life and Living Conditions in Russian Medical Universities
Choosing to study MBBS in Russia opens up a world of opportunities not only for academic advancement but also for experiencing a unique cultural and social environment. For international students, understanding what student life and living conditions will be like is crucial to making a well-informed decision. This article delves into various aspects of student life and living conditions at Russian medical universities, providing a comprehensive guide for prospective students.
Introduction to Student Life in Russia
Studying medicine in Russia is more than just attending lectures and participating in clinical rotations. It involves immersing oneself in a new cultural setting, adapting to different social norms, and making the most out of a vibrant student life. Russian medical universities are known for their diverse student population, which creates a dynamic and inclusive environment.
Campus Life and Extracurricular Activities
1. Campus Facilities
Russian medical universities are equipped with modern facilities designed to enhance the student experience. Campuses often feature state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries stocked with medical journals and textbooks, and specialized learning resources. Students have access to advanced medical equipment, which aids in both theoretical and practical training.
2. Extracurricular Activities
Beyond academics, Russian medical universities offer a range of extracurricular activities that allow students to unwind and develop new skills. These activities include:
Cultural Clubs: Many universities have cultural clubs that celebrate various traditions and festivals, providing a platform for students to showcase their heritage and learn about others.
Sports and Fitness: Students can participate in sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball. Many universities have gym facilities and organize inter-university sports events.
Student Unions: Active student unions organize events, workshops, and social gatherings, fostering a sense of community and providing leadership opportunities.
Accommodation and Living Conditions
1. On-Campus Housing
Most Russian medical universities offer on-campus accommodation for international students. University hostels are generally well-maintained and provide essential amenities. Key features of on-campus housing include:
Separate Hostels: Hostels are often segregated by gender, ensuring privacy and comfort.
Basic Facilities: Rooms are typically furnished with beds, desks, and wardrobes. Hostels usually have common areas, kitchens, and laundry facilities.
Security: On-campus hostels are equipped with 24/7 security to ensure student safety.
2. Off-Campus Housing
For those who prefer living off-campus, there are various rental options available in the vicinity of the university. Many students choose to rent apartments or shared accommodations. Some factors to consider when opting for off-campus housing include:
Proximity to University: Ensuring that the accommodation is close to the university can save time and commuting costs.
Cost: Off-campus housing can be more expensive than on-campus options, so it’s important to budget accordingly.
Safety: Researching the safety of the neighborhood and the condition of the accommodation is essential.
Cost of Living
1. Monthly Expenses
The cost of living in Russia is generally lower compared to Western countries. Students can expect the following monthly expenses:
Accommodation: On-campus housing can range from $100 to $300 per month, while off-campus options may vary from $200 to $500, depending on location and amenities.
Food: Eating out or cooking at home, students can expect to spend around $150 to $200 per month on groceries and dining.
Transportation: Public transportation is affordable, with monthly passes costing around $20 to $30. Many students use buses and metro systems to get around.
2. Financial Management
Managing finances wisely is crucial for students living abroad. Creating a budget, tracking expenses, and understanding the cost of living can help avoid financial stress. Some universities provide financial advice and support services to assist students in managing their budgets.
Cultural Adaptation and Integration
1. Language and Communication
While many Russian medical universities offer programs in English, learning Russian can greatly enhance the student experience. Knowledge of the local language helps in:
Communication: Interacting with locals, including patients during clinical rotations, becomes easier.
Daily Activities: Understanding signs, menus, and public transportation schedules.
Cultural Integration: Engaging more fully with local customs and social activities.
2. Social Integration
Integrating into the local culture involves participating in various social and cultural activities:
Local Festivals and Events: Attending local festivals, concerts, and exhibitions helps students experience Russian culture firsthand.
Cultural Exchanges: Engaging in cultural exchanges with local students and other international students broadens perspectives and fosters friendships.
Community Involvement: Joining local organizations or volunteer groups can provide a sense of belonging and purpose.
Healthcare and Well-being
1. Medical Services
Access to healthcare is an important consideration for international students. Russian medical universities often provide:
University Health Services: Basic medical services and emergency care on campus.
Local Clinics: Students have access to local healthcare facilities for more specialized medical needs.
Health Insurance: Most universities require students to have health insurance, either through the university or a private provider, to cover medical expenses.
2. Mental Health Support
Studying abroad can be challenging, and mental health support is essential:
Counseling Services: Many universities offer counseling services to help students manage stress and adapt to their new environment.
Student Support Groups: Support groups and peer networks provide emotional support and practical advice for dealing with the pressures of medical studies.
Safety and Security
1. Campus Security
Ensuring student safety is a priority for Russian medical universities:
24/7 Security: On-campus hostels and facilities are monitored by security staff around the clock.
Emergency Services: Universities provide information on emergency contacts and procedures.
2. Personal Safety
Students are advised to follow basic safety guidelines:
Avoid Risky Areas: Staying away from areas known for safety concerns.
Secure Personal Belongings: Keeping valuables secure and being mindful of personal belongings.
Conclusion
Studying MBBS in Russia offers an enriching experience that extends beyond academic excellence. With modern facilities, a vibrant campus life, affordable living costs, and a unique cultural environment, Russian medical universities provide a comprehensive and fulfilling educational journey. By understanding and adapting to the living conditions and student life in Russia, international students can make the most of their time abroad, gaining not only a valuable medical degree but also a wealth of personal and cultural experiences.
