One department of the Vivarium is dedicated solely to medical research on the physical and mental illnesses of outworlders—specimens from distant worlds. Despite years of effort, the inevitable degradation of these beings once removed from their native environments, and their eventual death remains an unsolved problem.

After the liberation force raid the facility and John extracts Asset 84 they takee the asset to a rehabilitation unit. CW: living weapon, disorientation, reference of self harm, malnutrition, hallucinations, and self deglect

Everything hurt.

84 felt strangely heavy and dizzy. Why was their cot so soft? They tried to move, but a hand on their wrist stopped them. Instincts and training kicked in, driving them to defend themselves, but pain shot through their body, intensifying the dizziness. The room seemed to spin, and darkness took them once more.

The next time they awoke, they vaguely heard voices. Words like "malnutrition," "dehydration," and "signs of self-neglect and self-injury" floated through the haze. The handlers must have finally decided they were broken, defective. They should probably run. But everything hurt, and the room kept spinning. Did they even care anymore that defective assets were eradicated? Their awareness wavered, the pain and dizziness drawing them back into darkness.

Something was attached to their hand. When they moved, it tugged on their skin. Forcing their eyes open, they found themselves in a softly lit room. The medical wing? No… This room was different. The walls were a light blue, not the sterile white they were used to. The cot was soft, the blanket even softer, the lights not harsh and painful. A monitor was beeping somewhere to their left, and an IV was attached to their right hand, delivering fluids.

Confusion set in. This wasn’t the facility they knew. The voices from earlier replayed in their mind. They weren’t handlers; they did not recognise these voices, and the words weren’t about punishment—they were about care. 84’s mind struggled to reconcile this with their training. Defective assets were not cared for; they were disposed of. Yet, here they were, in a room that seemed designed for comfort and healing, not interrogation or punishment.

As 84 tried to sit up, their body protested. The IV tugged painfully, and a hand gently guided them back down. The soft touch and the soft room were alien, causing 84 to flinch, and another wave of dizziness to engulf them. Squinting slightly they tilted their head, as a man started to speak the words sounding distorted and unclear

Their face sparked a memory—the man who had found them in the corridor, the man who had promised safety.

John sat by the bedside, observing 84's restless state. The transition had been rough, 84 had not even made it to the transport vehicle before collapsing.

Ordinarily John almost never entered the rehabilitation unit, he was a medic, part of the assault team. He entered facilities, extracted the assets, and then brought them here, where the rehab team took over. But when 84 had collapsed, the asset became his patient, his responsibility. And for some reason that he could not place even once here he'd felt unable to leave 84s side.

84's eyes fluttered open again, and this time, they stayed open longer. The confusion in their gaze was evident, mixed with a glimmer of recognition when they saw him.

"Hey there," John said softly, leaning forward to be in their line of sight. "You're safe now. You're in a rehabilitation unit. Do you remember me?"

84 attempted to respond, but their voice came out as a faint murmur. “John?”

John's eyes softened at the recognition in 84’s voice. He leaned closer, his voice calm and reassuring. “Yes, it’s me. You’re safe now. We got you out of that place.”

84’s gaze flickered with a mix of relief and continued confusion. They shifted slightly, wincing as the IV tugged at their arm. John noticed the discomfort and gently adjusted the IV line to alleviate the pull.

"I imagine you're feeling fairly overwhelmed right now, and probably fairly uncomfortable," John continued, "But you’re safe here. No punishments, no training, no expectations."

84’s gaze shifted around the room, trying to absorb the unfamiliar surroundings. The soft lighting, the absence of the facility’s cold sterility, and the gentle beeping of the medical equipment, the lack of cold eyes and restraints were almost too much to process.

John continued speaking softly, “You’ve been through a lot. You’re not alone here. We have medical professionals who will help you recover physically, and counselors who can support you emotionally. Take it one step at a time.”

The mention of doctors and counselors brought a flicker of anxiety to 84’s eyes. The facility has doctors, the facilities doctors were not people you wanted to see. Injury usually meant you had failed, it being punished. The doctors were cruel and cold, often medical treatment being used as an extension of whatever consequences you'd earnt. And counsellors? There was only one train b the facility would send an asset to a counsellor… 83 had been sent there when the handlers thought they were defective, before… The image of Sams lifeless body flashed through 84s mind.

John noticed the rising panic in 84’s eyes and quickly adjusted his approach. “I understand this is all very new and probably frightening,” he said gently, keeping his tone calm and steady. “But you’re not in danger here. I promised you'd be safe if you can't with me? The people here are good, and I won't let anything happen too you."

84's gaze flickered toward John, still struggling to reconcile the softness of the surroundings with their ingrained expectations of punishment and rejection.

84's gaze shifted around the room again. The soothing environment was in stark contrast to their past experiences. The gentle beeping of the machines and the absence of harsh conditions were overwhelming. The facility had been a place of control and punishment; this place was something different.

The IV drip continued its steady rhythm, and 84’s eyes fluttered closed once more. The panic and fear began to fade, replaced by a weary sense of resignation. They had little choice but to trust John right now. Their body felt weak, they were in an unknown place, the facility had been raided, their handler was dead. Even if they did escape where could they go?

84’s thoughts swirled in a fog of exhaustion and confusion as they lay in the soft, unfamiliar cot. John continued to talk, his voice melting into a gentle background hum.

"Alex?"

The last thing 84 heard was Sams voice one again as darkness took over their senses once more.
