Hosiery Habit Headcanons
Bond washes his socks by hand, every day. Every pair of socks, no matter where he is, whether at home or on a mission. He learned in the Navy that you can never have enough pairs of clean socks (he will never speak of that month-long assignment to the rain forests of Guatemala EVER), so he religiously washes his used socks each night before sleep and lays them out to dry before he packs them away in the morning.
Felix introduces Bond to his pair of lucky socks on their first joint mission. On a Sunday morning, when Bond dons thick wool socks for their hike through the Andes, Felix slides on his lucky socks and sends his thoughts heavenward for a much-needed victory. That night, when Bond points out that Felix’s lucky socks let them downtheir mission having fallen apart spectacularly—Felix checks the score on his phone and scoffs that they made two interceptions in the final quarter and won by 7 points. Bond gives him a queer look. Maybe Bond doesn’t believe in sports rituals, but Felix will do whatever it takes to support his favorite team; even if he can’t attend in person, he’s not gonna let the Saints down.
Moneypenny wears plain hose at MI6 (with the exception of her monthly, when she wears the pairs with extra tummy shaping), nude with no embellishments. Although there was one memorable holiday party when she purchased and wore a pair of full-fashioned stockings with the seam up the back that caused quite a kerfuffle. There were so many collisions and bruises amongst the staff attributed to her hosiery that HR had to request that she restrict their use to extracurricular occasions only.
Tanner makes a point of dressing appropriately and not drawing undue attention to himself. However, he has a sizable collection of novelty socks courtesy of his children’s gifts over the years, and he takes comfort in having a piece of his home life with him when at his stressful job.
Q is not a morning person and, as such, can’t be arsed to tell the difference between navy and black when getting dressed before dawn. He doesn’t give a shit whether his socks match his trousers; he has more important concerns on his mind, thank you very much. And outside of the office, he avoids socks altogether; barefoot in loafers or trainers is his preferred style.
MI6 Medical released an emergency advisory in 2019: No toe socks in the office! The infernal footwear became all the rage in 2018, and they did no harm so long as staff wore proper footwear to protect their feet in hazardous areas. But when a Q Branch technician reported to Medical limping badly, staff were appalled to find that he’d shoved his toe-socked foot into a colleague’s borrowed footwear to enter one of the more hazardous labs, and the toe-sock seams had cut off circulation to more than one toe over the course of three hours. Never again!
Alec learned early in life the importance of blending in and conforming to expectations. It earned him a reputation for being steady and dependable at the orphanage and later in the Navy. One of the easiest ways to conform was to mimic the styling of the most respected person around you. At school, it was the head boy. In the Navy, it was his commanding officer. And at MI6, it’s Bond, whose style is the fiddliest to imitate. (Those bespoke suits cost a bloody fortune!) Most obnoxious are Bond’s favorite silk-blend socks, which are nonabsorbent and require delicate washing. But Alec bides his time, keeps in line, wears the damn socks, and passes himself off as a loyal operative while he makes plans for his eventual defection….
Mallory dated a peer a couple decades back; a handsome fellow who cut a very fashionable figure. Mallory has some fond memories of their time together, as well as a keepsake set of platinum cuff links…and an unfortunate kink for sock garters. Mallory resolutely doesn’t own or wear any himself, but he’s aware that Bond and Trevelyan wear them on occasion. He does his best not to think about that when they’re seated across from him, their trouser hems riding up their ankles, eyeing how taut their socks are pulled, and wondering.
Madeleine has always hated the cold, and Altaussee is a bleak wasteland of tourists and ice. Her office, with its impractical exterior glass walls, is always two degrees lower than the interior rooms, and her usual hose doesn’t keep her ankles warm enough for a full day of listening to billionaires’ midlife crises. She’s taken to keeping a pair of double-layer cabin socks under her desk, and she kicks off her high heeled pumps and slides the cozy socks on overtop her hose every time she has an appointment in her blasted icebox of an office.
The sweaters that Q’s cats wear are cozy. The sweaters are warm. The sweaters feel like safety and Q’s gentle fingers sliding them on. But once a year, there is more. There are hats. There are strange collars. And there are socks. The socks are the enemy. They are confinement. They are slipping imbalance. The socks slide on like punishment for imagined crimes. Q lifts his cats and places them on the cat tree. Q coos, “Don’t you look precious.” A shutter clicks, and his fingers are no longer in the way, no longer trying to stop the inevitable. The socks are prey. They must be destroyed. Long claws pierce them. Rend them. Teeth dig in, merciless, and shake them limp. Dead socks taste of cotton victory. “Sorry darlings,” Q laughs. Surely Q will learn from this. There will not be socks again. “Not for another year,” Q promises.

His older brother passed away in a tragic school bus accident while on his way to a senior field-trip and it severely affected his family. It took a good few years for them to get back on their feet, but Lea made it his mission to ensure his family didn't give up after Lucas' passing. He went on to follow in the dreams of his brother as a means to provide some form of comfort and becoming a heart surgeon like Lucas planned for himself. Some years later, Lea met his current wife Rania and after making the big decision to move out to Chile the two started their family. Fifteen years into their move they have two beautiful and amazing children - Zane and Sonia - who bring nothing but joy into his life.

The Past.
♱ trigger warnings ♱ death mentioned |
Leandro is the second born to parents Marcos and Gloribel Pereira in San Antonio de los Banos, Cuba. The two first met in middle school after his mother immigrated from Guatemala and settled in the house next door. For the longest time they denied having any feelings for one another, but as they grew older and began to see other people jealousy quickly got in the way of their friendship and they could no longer live in denial.
Marcos proposed soon after graduation and before long the teens had married and expected their first child, Lucas. While they had originally wanted to wait until further in their careers to begin a family, some miracles simply just cannot be helped and within the next three years they welcomes two more children into the mix - Leandro and his younger sister Maribel.
Having come from a family of over achieving doctors, the Pereira's had never needed for much money and so finding care and entertainment for their children while the two continued to further their careers had been an easy ride.
Looking towards a better future for their children, Marcos and Gloribel decided to move to a new country where their children's careers could open up and expand on the family's already impressive medical legacy. The family got to Londres in the year 1992, when Leandro was only 10 years old.
Growing up they had always known the life they each would live. Marcos had been a brain surgeon while his wife a mortician tech, his expectation for his children were simple so long as they to chose a medical profession to embark on. While his older brother had been as ambitious and ruthless in his study as his father was, his younger sister following quick behind, Leandro didn't have the same passion. Blood made him squeamish and the though of cutting into people terrified him.
He kept all of his hidden from his family, only allowing his brother who he was extremely close to into his mind. Lucas promised to help Leandro find a way to speak to their parents. To slowly offer the possibility of a different career despite the already planned future his father had for them.
During their high school years, Leandro opened himself up to the possibility of a future of his own making. He fell in love with art - painting and realistic drawings specifically - and over the years his skills only seemed to blossom further and further. Leandro entered competitions and won awards for his pieces which influenced and motivated his dreams even more.
But tragedy struck his family, and during his brother's graduation trip the school bus was hit by a reckless drunk driver and his brother as well as other students quickly perished. The loss had driven his family into dark times. His mother refusing to leave her bed, and his father who seemed to have lost all the life from his eyes.
Leandro and Lucas had been so close for most of their lives and living a life without him seemed almost impossible, but seeing the way his family crumbled around him terrified him. He had to do something to ensure they didn't let his brother's death consume them alive. Against his every being, Leandro took the reign and pulled his family back together also stating his future plans of becoming a surgeon like they had all planned.
While it hadn't been easy, nor quick, his family slowly settled into a new found 'normal' after Lucas' death. Leandro graduated high school with high honors, and went onto medical school without a hitch. He worked tirelessly in order to perfect his poker face around all the blood and gut churning process that his now chosen field was. Finding unique ways to desensitize himself by watching operations nonstop for most of his college years.
Somewhere along the line Leandro met and fell in love with his current wife Rania Chadha, but it had taken him months to simply get her number let alone ask her out. He had never been the flirtatious type, or clever with his words. Up until he met her, Leandro had been in one relationship dating back to high school before Lucas passed and a situationship that had been more his best friend than anything else. But with Rania things had hit differently. His chest pounded when she walked by and his hands grew moist.
Over the span of a couple of months they began dating and soon enough he introduced her to his family. Seeing as she too was in the medical field Rania had been immediately welcomed into the family. Leandro still had a full grasp on the promise he made himself and Lucas - of getting their family back on track and filling in his shoes - so he focused on his career first before proposing five years later.
After their engagement, Leandro expressed his interest in moving them to Chile due to a job opening he was interested in and upon getting the job the two came to Valpo. Having had accomplished everything he set out for himself, Lea and Rania started a family. They welcomed their twins Zane and Sonia - now ten years old - into the world.

One of the things that have really shown me that race is not an immutable and essential category like white nationalists like to make it out to be is how often me and others in my family have been assumed to be not white.
I had a guy in a MAGA hat punch me at a farmer’s market while mimicking Spanish after overhearing me speak some French to my partner.
I was also assumed to be mixed/Asian by some of my residents while I was an RA though they never told me why. Only found out on my last day.
My sister was assumed mixed/Hispanic growing up and her friends were genuinely shocked to find out our dad doesn’t speak any language other than English (and is white).
On medical mission trips to Guatemala, both white folks she was traveling with and locals would assume she was there to be the medical interpreter. She, like me, only really speaks English and French.
My dad was put on a company diversity board, he assumed as the token white guy. Didn’t find out until like 5 years later it was because the organizer assumed he was native. He stepped down once he found out. Still blows my mind no one like...checked.
We’ve all been called many different racial slurs while just minding our own business.
But like as you can see by this - it’s never a consistent other race we’re assumed to be. We’re just not white enough for racists.
Which is doubly funny to me considering how many times my dad, sister, and I have been assumed to speak Spanish. The only two people in my family fluent in Spanish? My mom and brother. They aren’t ever really assumed to be not white - because they’re both blonde.
Which is...wild. Other racial groups have blonde folks. Brown hair/eyes + olive complexion =/= not white. Racists are just...fucking bad at what they do.

Mission Trip to Guatemala!
This past summer I traveled to Guatemala for a mission trip. I had no idea what to expect going to a new country and serving people from a different culture, but I knew the Lord was going to move! When we first landed we had to go through customs and fill out all of the fancy forms. A guy on our team felt around his bag and noticed that his tennis shoes were missing, so that was a great laugh for our team. We spent that next morning looking for another pair before we had to drive 4 hours to our site.
The 4-hour bus ride really opened my eyes to the amount of resources we have that others don't have access to. If there were ever an emergency it would take forever to get medical attention there. We served throughout the week by hosting a sports camp, doing home visits, providing a meal for children along with a craft, and hanging out with Abuelitos.
The Lord continued to show me how privileged and blessed I am. To see children running around with the biggest smiles on their faces, and light up when you would ask them their name or how old they were really just broke me down. These children were so content with what they had and loved spending time with us. I enjoyed having intentional conversations with every single family we met and didn't want to leave. The Lord revealed so much to me in such a short amount of time and Guatemala will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Hello friends. Suzannah and I are taking our trip to the Congo in August.
What is the purpose of the trip?
We are holding our Leadership Conference alongside several workshops to fortify and unify our vision and work that the Lord has tasked us with, both today and in the future:
Learning the intricacies of what developing Congolese leadership and new church plants looks like, how to better equip this vision, and hear the heart and feedback from those on the front lines.
Where will we stay?
Last year we finished our two-bedroom Guesthouse. This year we furnished it anticipating our stay.
What will we eat?
We will be eating regular American comfort foods like sandwiches and chips. But, each day we will join our pastors for the afternoon meals. These meals consist of: fufu (made of cassava root and corn flour, it looks like a lump of tan play-dough), pondu (pounded green leaves from the cassava plant), chopped and fried meats made into a meat soup, pork or chicken or a type of mackerel fish called Thompson. Rice and beans are also side foods. This meal is very filling.
Suzannah Dawson
Hey friends, Suzannah here! The goal in this trip is for me to re-connect with my Congolese Family. My heart has leaned towards missions as I’ve grown through the years. This desire has led me through several medical missions trips throughout the world, both long and short term. I’ve travelled four times to Guatemala, once to Rwanda, and once I served on a Mercy Ship in Papua New Guinea.
My heart has always been for the Congolese people, however. This has brought me to consider the continuation of Rise Congo and what that would look like long term. This trip will be the beginning of me re-connecting with my spiritual family there to help support the mission, projects, and community that are already thriving in that country. I am excited to sit next to the Mamas and listen to their stories, hear the goals of the Pastors for their churches, and encourage the dreams of the Children. This community is rich in their Christian walks, and I look forward to seeing that first hand again.

International Women’s Day: Actresses Who Became Activists By Raquel Stecher
International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th and recognized by the United Nations, raises awareness for women’s rights and celebrates the achievements of women across the globe. Utilizing their fame as a platform to do good, actresses from the golden age of Hollywood and beyond have supported a variety of philanthropic causes. Myrna Loy worked on behalf of UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Ida Lupino made NEVER FEAR (’50) to raise awareness about polio. Ruby Dee fought for civil rights. Rita Moreno continues to champion the Latinx community. Martha Raye entertained the troops during three separate wars. Debbie Reynolds was a mental health and AIDS advocate. Tippi Hedren empowered Vietnamese women to become business owners. And, Shirley Temple raised awareness about breast cancer. There are many, many examples of actresses devoting their time, energy and, in many cases, finances for humanitarian, environmental and political causes. Let’s take a look at some of the notable actresses who became activists.
Doris Day
In 1937, Doris Day’s coonhound Tiny was hit by a car and killed. The guilt Day felt for Tiny’s untimely demise would fuel her activism on behalf of animals. Day transitioned from acting in the 1970s to become an animal welfare advocate. She co-founded the non-profit organization Actors and Others for Animals in 1971. In 1978, she started the Doris Day Pet Foundation (later renamed the Doris Day Animal Foundation). This organization advocates for the humane treatment of animals. By the late 1980s, she would allow only a handful of interviews with the sole intention of publicizing her charitable efforts. She even called up President Ronald Reagan, her costar in THE WINNING TEAM (’52), to discuss animal rights legislation. In 1987, she started The Doris Day Animal League, which eventually merged with The Humane Society of the United Sates, and established World Spay Day. In 2011, she started the Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center, and Day recorded the album “My Heart,” the proceeds of which went to her non-profit. Day was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2004 for her work.
Jane Fonda
Outspoken political activist Jane Fonda has championed many causes over the years. She was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War, which landed her in some hot water. In 1970, while Fonda was organizing and fundraising a protest with Vietnam War veterans, she was arrested for possession of drugs. The drugs were in fact vitamins and she was eventually cleared of all charges. In a moment of defiance, she held up a fist for her now iconic mugshot. Two years later, Fonda would travel to Vietnam and a photo of her sitting on an anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi would stir up controversy. She was labeled “Hanoi Jane,” a moniker that is still negatively used against her to this day. While she regretted her actions, she did not let this prevent her from continuing her political activism. She’s been a champion for civil rights, feminist causes and has lent her support to Native Americans. In recent years, she’s taken on several environmental causes including protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline and Arctic drilling. As of the publication of this article, Fonda has been arrested five times for her climate change demonstrations (Fire Drill Fridays) in Washington D.C.
Audrey Hepburn
During her childhood, Audrey Hepburn suffered the effects of living through WWII and the Dutch famine of 1944-1945, which would have long lasting effects on her health. In 1946, early ambassadors from the newly created organization UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) offered her assistance. She never forgot their kindness and her own personal experience led to her to become a champion for children in need. Hepburn began working with UNICEF in 1954 and started traveling on field missions in 1988. The following year she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the organization. She traveled to Turkey, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and elsewhere, assisting with medical treatments, nutrition projects and working directly with children and their mothers. Her last trip was to Somalia in 1992, four months before she died. In 1993, she was posthumously awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award.
Helen Hayes
Actress Helen Hayes was best known for her theatrical productions, but when her severe asthma put an end to her stage career (the dust on stage proved to be too much), she transitioned to television and film. Hayes used her fame to help raise funds for asthma research. She also donated to the arts, including the Riverside Shakespeare company. She was on the board of her directors for the New York Chapter of the Girl Scouts in the 1970s. Besides being an EGOT (an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning performer), her greatest claim to fame should be her work with the New York State Rehabilitation and Research Hospital which helps rehabilitate patients with disabilities. Hayes first became involved with the hospital in the 1940s. Throughout the years, she donated, fundraised and hosted events at her mansion, the “Pretty Penny,” and offered support in any way she could. She lobbied for funding to renovate the hospital, a project that cost over $37 million dollars. She served as a member of the board from 1944 until her death in 1993. The hospital was renamed The Helen Hayes Hospital in 1974 and is still going strong today.
Lena Horne
Lena Horne’s activism began at a very young age. In 1919, at the age of two, she appeared on the cover of the NAACP journal The Crisis. Influenced by her grandmother Cora Calhoun Horne, a suffragist and activist who was a political ally of W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as her activist father, Horne championed civil rights before the movement ever began. She joined the NAACP while she was still a high school student. She also leant her support to the Urban League, the Progressive Citizens of America and the SNCC. During WWII, Horne supported the war effort by entertaining black troops. She filed a complaint through the NAACP when she saw that black service members had to sit behind German POWs during her performances at Fort Reilly. When MGM removed her from the tour, she self-financed her trips and continued her efforts. During WWII, she also spoke up on behalf of the mistreatment of Japanese Americans. Horne campaigned for anti-lynching legislation with Eleanor Roosevelt, although that ultimately failed. During the Civil Rights Movement, Horne performed at rallies and was in the March on Washington in 1963. In 1983, the NAACP awarded her the Spingarn Medal for being an “artist humanitarian and living symbol of excellence. Her humanitarian efforts live on and the annual Lena Horne Prize, awarded by Town Hall, honors artists for their social impact.
Marsha Hunt
The name Marsha Hunt should become synonymous with activism. Hunt has been indefatigable in her humanitarian efforts. Influenced by her progressive mother, she became a liberated woman with strong political beliefs. Those beliefs would come under scrutiny during the McCarthy Era witch hunt. She joined the Committee for the First Amendment, a group of Hollywood actors and writers who supported the Hollywood Ten. She was ultimately blacklisted. Over the years, she became an advocate for UNICEF, The March of Dimes, The Red Cross and the United Nations. She was named an Ambassador for Peace in 2007. Hunt has championed many humanitarian causes including homelessness, mental health, world peace, the environment and the plight of refugees. She is a founder of the San Fernando Valley Mayor’s Fund for the Homeless. Hunt helped raise money to buy a motel that was renovated into a homeless shelter for women and children. She supported the shelter throughout the years by donating supplies and helping with the upkeep. Hunt has also been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community. Back in the 1970s, she wrote a song about same-sex relationships called “Here’s to All Love,” and it was performed by Glee star Bill A. Jones in 2013. A documentary about her life, career and humanitarian efforts MARSHA HUNT’S SWEET ADVERSITY was released in 2015.
Mary Pickford
Actress, producer, writer and business woman, Mary Pickford was an enterprising woman and instrumental in the formative years of the film industry. In 1921, she conceived of the idea for the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization intended to help other members of the film industry who had fallen on hard times. She used the remaining funds from her work selling Liberty Bonds during WWI to help finance the project. Pickford became one of the founding members of what is now called the Motion Picture Television Fund. She also served as the organization’s first vice president. She oversaw various initiatives including the Playroll Pledge Program, which encouraged industry members to donate 0.5% of their paycheck to the fund. She helped raise money to buy walnut and orange groves in Woodland Hills, which would become the home for the fund and its hospital. Pickford was on the board for many years and attended every fundraising event she could. In addition to the MPTF, she established the Mary Pickford Foundation in the 1950s. The foundation focuses on preserving films in partnerships with film archives.
Rosalind Russell
Ever since Rosalind Russell portrayed Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse who took great strides to help children suffering from polio in the film SISTER KENNY (’46), Russell became a tireless advocate for various health causes. Russell, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, served on the National Commission on Arthritis and Related Musculoskeletal Diseases starting in the 1970s. The Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis University of California San Francisco was named in her honor. She was a founding member of the United Service Organizations (USO) and the League for Crippled Children. She was a chairman and advocate for The Lighthouse for the Blind, Catholic Charities of New York, The National Arthritis Foundation, Children Services of Connecticut and the MPTF. Russell lent her efforts to senior care centers and in assisting tornado victims. For her numerous philanthropic pursuits, she received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1973.
Elizabeth Taylor
When her good friend and co-star in GIANT (’56), Rock Hudson, died from complications of AIDS, Elizabeth Taylor was devastated. Fueled by the tragedy, she became a tireless advocate for those suffering from HIV/AIDS. She helped raise awareness, fund research and combat ignorance in a time when AIDS was still highly misunderstood. She testified before the House and the Senate for the Ryan White Care Act and helped convince President Ronal Reagan to publicly acknowledge the disease. She also founded the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in D.C. which offered free HIV/AIDS testing. In 1985, she chaired the AIDS Project Los Angeles’ Commitment to Life fundraising project and co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research. The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, established in 1991, provides financial and moral support to patients suffering from AIDS. She shifted her focus from acting to her humanitarian efforts and raised millions of dollars for different foundations. After her death in 2011, her estate keeps funding her foundation. Taylor was awarded a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1993.

This afternoon I got to have a little taste of what it must be like to live in Lake Wobegone (anyone else raised listening to Prairie Home Companion?) I went to the local Lutheran church see my friend Jill speak about her amazing medical mission to Guatemala. It just so happened to be a ladies luncheon with the theme of “aprons” and it was in the church basement. We saw many beautiful old aprons and heard the stories behind them (including how more than one apron smelled like lutefisk), ate off well loved church dishes and drank out of cute little tea cups. The Lutheran ladies ensemble sang a very funny song. And they were so kind and welcoming to me! At one point I had punch, coffee, and water all in front of me. And I went home with a live tulip plant! Of course Jill was the star of the show and her talk was very moving. She really has such a heart for people in desperate circumstances and gives both her medical experience and time and money to them. She’s very much a hero in my eyes. If everyone were like her, the world would have no one left in need. Thank you for welcoming me, ladies of the Lutheran church! I appreciate it so much! #outhereontheprairie #ladiesluncheon #aprons #church #churchevents #lutheranchurch #medicalmission #northdakotamoment #northdakotalegendary #northdakotalife #lakewobegon #prairiehomecompanion (at North Dakota) https://www.instagram.com/p/COGoiZqH-mi/?igshid=pcmsjswasuqk

Dead Man’s Eyes: Ch. 5
On AO3 by @dracusfyre
With a controlled voice that gave away none of the pulse-pounding adrenaline that was currently making him vibrate like a live wire, Tony said, “JARVIS, I’m going to need you to lock down whatever room Natasha Romanov is in please, right fucking now.” then he went to met Natasha at the front gate personally, rather than having JARVIS open the gates.
When he cracked the gate and eyeballed her, she said, “What the fuck, Tony? Why aren’t you letting me in?”
“There’s a lot of “what the fuck” going on right now,” he said warily, looking around to see if anyone else was with her. “Humor me and tell me something only the real Natasha would know, please.”
She narrowed her eyes, patience completely gone. “I know you wear diapers under your suit for long missions, Tony,” she said waspishly. “You tell everyone that waste systems are built into the suit, but it’s just diapers, like race car drivers and astronauts.”
Tony winced. “Well, Jesus Christ, Natasha, say that a little louder for the people in New York who didn’t hear you,” he said as he let her in and looped one of her arms around his shoulder so he could help her walk. “First, let’s get you to medical, then I’m going to have to make a lot of apologies, then I’m going to beat the living daylights out of the literally two-faced spy in our midst.”
Natasha let out a gasping laugh as she limped into the building, leaning heavily against him. “Sounds like we’ve both had an interesting month. Do tell.”
“They are a group of resourceful, twisted fucks, I’ll give them that,” Tony said, eyeing the captive Hydra agent through the barred window of the containment cell. “Hydra couldn’t have Bucky, so they tried to make sure we couldn’t either.” Without the nanomask disguise, the spy looked nothing like Natasha; the build and the hair was the same, but her face and even the way she carried herself was completely different. Tony and everyone had already apologized profusely to Natasha for not knowing that it wasn’t her, but she had just shrugged philosophically. “It’s what they do,” she’d said with a wry smile. “No shame in getting beaten by the professionals.”
Steve shook his head and sighed. “You were out there on the run from Hydra ever since we were at that base, and we never even noticed. We should have been looking for you.”
“Oh, you noticed,” Natasha said. She moved stiffly towards the small couch down the hall from the cell, ready to sit down and rest her injury before she interrogated her erstwhile doppelganger. “I got your attention in Nicaragua and Panama, but every time you noticed, Hydra also noticed. They caught up to me a couple of times.” She pointed to some healing road rash on her back and said, “Guatemala,” then to the wound in her side and said, “Brazil, fell through the roof of a favela trying to escape,” then to her cut lip: “Trying to get back into the US. Must have been pretty desperate to keep me off the radar until their little plan came to fruition.”
“I can’t believe I was so stupid,” Tony said. “She said ‘are you sure you can trust him,’ and just like that, I was seeing Hydra everywhere except right beside me.”
Steve protested and Natasha shook her head. “Tony, you knew in your heart it wasn’t true,” she said. “That’s why it’s been killing you inside, because your heart was telling you one thing and your brain something else.” When Tony still looked unconvinced, she gestured for him to come sit next to her. “Look, the only reason why she was able to get to you was because she made the stakes so high.” He looked at her skeptically so she elbowed him in the side. “If she had come to you and said she was very sorry, but she had slept with Bucky while he was on the run, would you have believed her?” Tony snorted and Nat smiled. “Exactly. But she knew exactly what buttons to push - only the safety of the Avengers and, I don't know, the free world, could be strong enough to make you doubt yourself and Bucky.”
“I still feel terrible. I was so horrible to Bucky, how do I make it up to him?”
“If you want to do penance,” Bucky said with a broad grin as he came around the corner, “I recommend spending a lot of time on your knees.” Steve and Natasha both rolled their eyes as Bucky pulled Tony up and dipped him into a Hollywood kiss.
“You’re not mad?” Tony asked breathlessly when Bucky set him back on his feet.
“Sweetheart, no,” Bucky said, running his thumb over Tony’s bottom lip. “That’s the whole reason why I trusted you with the red book. I knew you would do what was right, what was necessary, no matter how you personally felt about it." He kissed Tony one more time, as if he couldn't stop himself. "Because that's what a hero does."

I’m seeing a lot in the notes of a recent post about the Twilight series arguing about Mormonism. (The current church authorities dislike the church’s members being called Mormons but I’m going to continue to ignore them.) To make my biases and allegiances clear: I was raised Mormon, mostly in states surrounding Utah; I served a mission (to Guatemala), though my mission ended early for medical reasons; I subsequently left the church due to disagreements with their teachings and behavior. I’ve studied the church’s history both from within and without. So I’m going to go over some of the arguments happening.
Claim 1: Mormonism is a cult.
The problem here is that “cult” is a term without widely accepted meaning; it’s essentially, in common discourse, just a slur for a religion that’s not very big, or exists on the fringes of society.
Stepping back for a minute, though, it’s helpful to look at why we think cults are bad. I’m going to use a definition of a “destructive cult” from Dr. Steven Hassan of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center:
A destructive cult is a pyramid-shaped authoritarian regime with a person or group of people that have dictatorial control. It uses deception to recruit new members and does not tell them what the group is, what the group actually believes, and what will be expected of them if they become members. It also uses undue influence to keep people dependent, obedient, and loyal.
He also has what he calls the BITE model -- questioning how and to what extent a group controls the Behavior, Information, Thoughts, and Emotions of its members. There’s a breakdown of these categories and how aspects of them apply to the Mormon church on his website -- and it ranks very high on the cult-o-meter on all counts.
The one (joking) refutation of Mormonism’s cult status is that a cult is supposed to have a charismatic leader, and the Mormons haven’t had one of those in a long, long time.
Claim 2: Mormons belive PoC are the seed of Cain/are destined for Hell.
This one is kinda false. Kinda.
It’s absolutely part of Mormon teaching that Blacks -- everyone of African descent -- have as their ancestor Noah’s son Ham, whose wife was a descendant of Cain, the first murderer, and that their dark skin is the Mark that God put on Cain. Native Americans, in contrast, are supposed to be descended from a group of Jews who left Jerusalem around 600BCE and went to America in boats; half of the family turned out evil, so were cursed with dark skin in a completely separate incident. (Dark skin being a mark of evil is a recurring theme.) No-one of African descent could be a full member of the Mormon church until 1979.
However, Mormonism doesn’t believe in a traditional Christian Hell, nor does it have a concept of original sin, so nobody is Hellbound -- they’re just naturally evil and lesser beings.
(It’s probably fair to point out that the idea of dark skin being the Mark of Cain, or at least of Ham, was by no means unique to Mormons, and was indeed pretty popular in 19th-century Christianity. )
Claim 3: Joseph Smith invented the religion to get access to underage girls to rape.
Mormon apologists will claim that the church didn’t practice polygamy until the 1843 “revelation” (recorded as Doctrine and Covenants chapter 132), which history bears out as false; Joseph was teaching “plural marriage” as early as 1831, and potentially practicing that early as well; there are accusations of liasons with Fanny Alger (age 16) and with Marinda Nancy Johnson (age 16) in 1831.
However, it’s pretty clear that Joseph Smith came up with the golden plates-new bible-new religion thing not as a gambit for underage sex, but simply to get money. He certainly took advantage of having loyal followers, whom he could send out on missions and then sleep with their wives and daughters, but that seems to have been a secondary consideration.
Polygamy was publicly denied and privately practiced until 1852, when it was declared once the Mormons following Brigham Young were safely in Utah; it then was the open practice until “officially” overturned in 1890, and then really-no-we-mean-it denounced in 1904. Existing marriages weren’t dissolved, but persisted until the 1950s, and of course splinter groups continue it to this day. It’s still considered church doctrine that plural marriage will be the rule following the second coming of Jesus and in the next life.
Claim 4: Mormon genocide against Native Americans.
This one’s not in any doubt, sadly. Brigham Young displaced and killed a lot of Native Americans in setting up Utah, and participated in the trade of young Native Americans as slaves. Part of Joseph’s original plural marriage project was that some of the Mormon leadership’s wives should be Native women, in order to help accelerate the time that their descendants would become “white and delightsome”; this seems not to have been seriously followed but was in the zeitgeist. Even in the 1950s-1990s, the church ran the “Indian Placement Program”, which took young Native students from their homes and placed them with Mormon foster families, providing an education on the condition that they convert, with the expressed intent to keep them from their own culture and make them “white”:
In October 1960, [later Mormon President Spencer W.] Kimball discussed the program at the General Conference. He said that Natives who participated in the program were gradually turning lighter, becoming 'white and delightsome.' "The day of the Lamanites is nigh," Kimball said, claiming that Navajo placement students were "as light as Anglos" and, in one case, several shades lighter than parents "on the same reservation, in the same hogan, subject to the same sun and wind and weather."
Heard any other claims about Mormonism? Feel free to ask me or follow up here; I’ll try to answer as best as I can.

Outreach for World Hope: Guatemala
Did you know that approximately 800 million people in the world go to bed hungry each night? That's equivalent to about one in nine people on earth. The vast majority of the world's hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished. According to the CIA World Fact book, Guatemala has the sixth-worst rate of chronic malnutrition in the world, despite being described as a relatively well-off lower-middle class country.
The chronic undernutrition of children under 5 is 49.8%, the highest in the region and the 4th highest in the world. 53% of the population lives in Poverty, with 13% in extreme poverty. Guatemala’s chronically malnourished infants do eat, however, their consists of low quality and carb-heavy foods, such as corn tortillas and rice. The nutritional deficits take a devastating toll, hindering brain development, among other disabling effects.
The country’s income inequality means that rural areas suffer from a lack of basic infrastructure. Clean water and electricity are almost nonexistent in many villages. Education is scarce and less than 40 percent of indigenous women in Guatemala are literate, compared with an overall rate of 85 percent for Latin America. Needless to say, there is a lot of work to be done in this Country.
Organizations such as Outreach For World Hope are stepping in and doing the work to provide sustainable resources for the people in the most impoverished regions of Eastern Guatemala. Since 2005 they have been saving the lives of children found in the end stages of starvation. They are providing pathways out of poverty and hope for the future, through education and sustainable agriculture programs.
Every year, OWH provides opportunities to participate in short term medical missions where they serve hundreds of families in need. The natives receive medical care and parasite treatment, personal hygiene, clothing, and toys for children. Families are educated on the importance of clean water and are blessed with simple water filtration systems.
The teams plant fruit trees and vegetable gardens, install vented cooking stoves, and build homes for qualified families. Severely malnourished children are profiled and placed into OWH's life boat program, which supplies families with nutrient rich food and medical support, which aids these children to better health. These mission trips are not possible without all the people that support our efforts to impact these families on a monthly basis.
Thank you to all that commit to sponsoring families with monetary gifts and donations. The circulation of your resources give hope and save lives everyday. Outreach for World Hope has over 200 children in their Life Boat program that need sponsorship. For only $32/month, you'll have the opportunity to supply nutrient rich food and medical assistance for an entire family. For more information regarding sponsorship opportunities, visit www.outreachforworldhope.org.
“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” ― Barack Obama

#OurRemedyIsARMY: Join our campaign to help tackle Covid19 crisis
Today, our world is fighting a serious battle with Covid19, also known as Novel Coronavirus, a global pandemic that has taken over 170K lives. And, the numbers are increasing at an exponential rate. This viral contagion has not just affected people's health but has also gravely impacted the economy and education, leaving people with uncertainty and hopelessness for their future. Considering the urgency of the situation, One In An ARMY has launched some campaigns to support relief efforts carried out by non-profit organizations.
For our April 2020 Project, we are reaching out to the non-profits we have worked with for our previous campaigns. These organizations are working hard to provide necessary medical, food, and other emergency supplies but due to shortage of staff and the ongoing economic crisis, they are in dire need for support. The detailed step-by-step process for the donation drive has been explained here. In this blog, you will get the details for all the non-profits we are supporting, their aim, and the minimum contribution you can make to help them in their social endeavor:
Medical Teams International
In April 2018, OIAA collaborated with Medical Teams International for our inaugural campaign to support them for their relief campaign in Syria. With programs in the US, Columbia, Guatemala, Tanzania, Uganda, Liberia, Lebanon, and Bangladesh, MTI provides life-saving health care and supplies to people.
To combat the healthcare crisis due to Covid19, Medical Teams International needs support to help local health systems in promoting good hygiene, ship PPEs, and repurpose Dental Vans to make them serve as drive-thru screening sites. Your contribution will help them complete their goal.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $2

Thirst Relief
We collaborated with Thirst Relief for our July 2018 campaign. The organization provides clean water solutions to people in need, across the globe. Water is deemed to be a basic human right but a lot of people lack access to clean water, leaving them vulnerable to diseases. Thirst Relief collaborates with local partners to provide solutions ranging from Biosand Filters, Well Drilling, Well Repair, and W.A.S.H.
Covid19 crisis has made it mandatory for people to maintain their personal hygiene by keeping their hands clean. Thirst Relief aims to provide a safe way to wash hands and stop the spread in the homes of 120 at-risk children who attend a school in Kampala, Uganda. Your contribution will help the organization deploy safety measures and minimize virus transmission.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1 ($5 Recommended)

Korean Kids and Orphanage Outreach Mission (KKOOM)
OIAA first collaborated with KKOOM for our August 2018 campaign. Organized as a corporation in the State of Michigan, KKOOM provides access to education, funding for pre-school and college scholarships to orphans. The organization also helps in providing clothing and household items at Korean Orphanages.
With Covid19 hitting South Korea and affecting a large part of the country's population, mandatory quarantine has been adopted as a safety norm. Placed in quarantine for the last 7 weeks, KKOOM is concerned about the well-being of the kids and aims to reach out to them with care packages. You can help the non-profit with donations to ensure safety to these kids.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1 ($5 Recommended)

MindLeaps
A wonderful organization we once had a chance to partner with, MindLeaps uses dance as a part of their curriculum to help their students develop cognitive and social-emotional skills, vital in school and work. During this pandemic crisis, they are trying to continue providing meals to their students at the Rwanda Centre. The organization is also making an effort to provide food and sanitation packages to vulnerable families. ARMYs' support will act as a catalyst to their present mission and help them reach out to as many people as possible.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1
Donate here: bit.ly/MLxCovid19 Fill out this form: bit.ly/OIAACovid19Form
Cuatro Por Venezuela
In November 2018, we chose Cuatro Por Venezuela to help raise funds for their food & formula programs for infants. The organization strives to fight issues such as but not limited to hunger, malnutrition, and shortage of medical supplies in Venezuela, a consequence of the economic crisis. They run various support programs including Food Program, Health Program, Education Program, Formula Program, and some Special Programs.
Unprepared for a pandemic like Covid19, Venezuela needs help. Cuatro Por Venezuela aims to fund protective supplies for health care workers and provide hand sanitizers and soap. ARMYs contribution to their campaign will help people gain access to sanitation products and fight this contagious disease effectively.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1
Donate here: bit.ly/CPVxCovid19 Fill out this form: bit.ly/OIAACovid19Form
Purple Community Fund (PCF)
OIAA worked with ARMYs to help raise funds for PPF in their mission to support poverty-stricken families by providing them with education, health, and welfare programs to lead a financially stable life. Covid19 has forced governments around the world to impose lockdowns. The same happened in the Philippines too. 24/7 lockdown has left people with no jobs and as a result, with a shortage of food and medical supplies. PCF is working to provide life-saving supplies to them and your help will accelerate this process.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $3
Donate here: bit.ly/PCFxCovid19 Fill out this form: bit.ly/OIAACovid19Form
Children Healing Art Project (CHAP)
For Taehyung's birthday project, we collaborated with CHAP to help them continue with their art programs and support children and families facing medical challenges. The programs range from in-house, art clubs, and outreach and are provided free of charge to the families affected by pediatric illness, disability or special needs.
In their mission to provide art for healing, CHAP is now working to build an online community for interaction and provide art supplies, to be dropped off at area hospitals and distributed by the nursing staff for children to enjoy.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $10
Donate here: bit.ly/CHAPxCovid19 Fill out this form: bit.ly/OIAACovid19Form
Playing for Change
Inspired by Yoongi's passion for music, we chose Playing for Foundation for our March 2019 campaign and helped raise funds for their music-oriented programs. Aimed for at-risk youth, Playing for Change provides classes in vocals, dance, instruments, and music theory. They work with their partners to support primary education and provide humanitarian aid such as clean water, solar power, food, medicine, clothes and much more.
Playing for Change also provides tools and training to support micro-enterprise in vulnerable areas, facing a shortage of economic resources.
During this pandemic, they are running donation drives to help people and healthcare workers in Argentina by purchasing supplies required for the production of protective masks and providing hygiene items.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1
Donate here: bit.ly/PFCFxCovid19 Fill out this form: bit.ly/OIAACovid19Form
100Cameras
The organization empowers kids experiencing challenges to use photography and tell their stories. The reason why we chose them for our January 2020 campaign! When Covid19 has forced most of us to stay inside, 100Cameras is working to support kids through an online program. This program will be suited to the individual needs and will aim to connect children with each other, without the need for physical presence.
Minimum Donation Requirement: $1

BTS in their latest album "Map of the Soul: 7" said, "we are only seven with you". ARMYs have time and again proved themselves to be a driver for change through their ideas, discussions, donations, and initiatives. Today, the world needs us more than ever. We have the power to start the revolution! So, if you are able to contribute to our campaigns, follow our guide.
We completely understand that not everyone will be able to contribute financially. Therefore, we have compiled a list of some fun activities that do not require spending money and can be used to raise funds for social good. Check out our Ways To Donate Without Money post to learn more.
Let's work together to support front line workers, help people in need, and defeat this pandemic!
