Ok so I feel like a slightly more positive post needs to follow this as I ran out of space in the tags but like
I was coming out of a …I guess I can’t say sheltered environment because naive I was not and I met so many people that were dangerous but…. Isolated? I think isolated is the word. Socially disconnected. And then suddenly having, if I were to estimate, 50ish homeless people over those two years that I talked to, learned from, knew everything about. They told me the daily news. They told me their drama. Eventually I knew about what mental illnesses they struggled with, what prescriptions they were on, what illegal medications they were using to cope with lack of medical care. I helped first responders with medical history when no one else knew. I gained such a perspective on the world talking to people who had it worse than me but were still keeping on keeping on. And I loved all of them.

Books of 2024: THE NIGHT GUEST by Hildur Knútsdóttir.
Sticking with the insomnia-flavored tiny horror theme (and also, apparently, the Deeply Fucked Up Bright Pink Books Published By Tor theme *side eyes JUST LIKE HOME*).
I watched (Zoomed) a conversation between Mary Robinette Kowal and Hildur on the day the book came out, and it was really interesting! Plus I am SO susceptible to Buying Books Impulsively Because I Think The Author Is Neat (*other side eyes unintentional Columbus Book Festival haul*), so I picked up a copy when Bookshop did a coupon for it.
I'm only a few chapters in, but so far I'm very intrigued! It's starting as a tense little mystery about Why Is She Always Exhausted When She Wakes Up and so far medical professionals have Found Nothing Wrong, which she knows is bullshit but can't solve (the exhaustion and the resignation about it are uh. too real. it's a very real book). The suspense and the tension are already ratcheting up, and the chapters are very bite-size and readable! Will report back a final verdict when I'm done!!
(Side note: it comes with apparently a massive content warning re: animal death/harm, which, per the Zoom conversation, does not fuck up Icelandic readers like it tends to fuck up American readers?? Specifics are all over Goodreads, so check there first if that's a heads up you need!)

hiiii! have you considered releasing tradewinds as a single purchase through a site like gumroad?
Hi anon!
So the reason Tradewinds was shelved and not published like 8 years ago, is because I couldn't find an Aboriginal sensitivity reader willing to read m/m with disturbing themes. I had sensitivity readers for the other side of things (like Matan and his heritage), but I kept either not finding anyone, or the one person I found took my $200 USD deposit and vanished and never spoke to me / responded to any of my emails.
As a result, I was uncomfortable distributing it anywhere broadly, even though I was relatively confident the novel isn't offensive, because I just don't know 100%.
I am a lot more confident releasing it via subscription as an exclusive novel, because the people who pay for subscription are often folks who are a) already used to my style of writing and b) generally know what to expect from me, vs. cold audiences who don't. I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't realise that Tradewinds would make a great exclusive/paywalled release for subscription, because it means it's only ever going to find a very narrow bandwidth of readers.
Basically if I could release it for single purchase - as basically an ebook - I would have released it like 8 years ago, anon. And the reason I have actually released it this specific way is down to the fact that I'm just not really confident offering it for broader distribution.
That might change one day, if I happen to stumble across a sensitivity reader who is okay with my style of writing, who is reputable + has references (i.e. so I know I won't lose a fair chunk of money in the process, because that burned me pretty badly, not gonna lie). But until then, having Tradewinds be limited is the only way I'm comfortable releasing it at all.
Folks are more than welcome to sign up for one month, download the book (and read any other early access they want) and then leave. They can even just put 'I only wanted one thing and now I have it' in the exit survey so I know what they were there for if they want. Then it's still a single purchase (with some early access extras), and they still access the downloadable file. :)

I'm reading Richard Feynman's posthumously-published book What Do You Care What Other People Think? and I actually think the 2nd half of it, which is about his experiences on the commission that investigated the Challenger shuttle disaster, should be on labor studies reading lists.

There are few things worse, I think, than reading a call to action memoir that is so close to right but really should have been shelved for at least 5yrs before going to print so the author has time to learn enough to see all the false equivalencies that really hinder the point
#personal;#yeah fatphobia is bad but dont you dare act like people aren't asking disabled people to medically alter themselves every day???#you compare bariatric and gender affirming surgeries in such a way that makes the latter sound easy to get??#and in fact don't at ALL go into the struggles for transition care except for a nod at FL while comparing us (trans people)#to fat people like our lives are Much Easier instead of /oppressed by the same white colonial structures that enforce fatphobia/#but go off i guess#i was giving a lot of leeway when i was just side eyeing the comparisons with racism bc i'm not fat and i've not experienced enough racism#to say either way on those#but the MOMENT she started using trans and disabled comparisons i about lost it#and also randomly started calling it antisemitic (sure as much as it's violnt to all poc) in the last chapter with nothing supporting it#like you can tell it was written over the course of the last like 2 maybe 3 years without enough space to breathe#i have listened to a book on writing memoir so often i've got some of it all but memorized#and i agree that if it's more recent than a decade you're probably too close to be writing it#and this author's writing mostly about during pandemic times. this is more a journal and call to action than memoir#but its not polished enough to be a proper call to action bc there's not much it gives you to do other than 'stop dieting & dare to be fat'#which isn't an effective call to action when only those most harmed by fatphobia can act on it you know???#lots of complaints#3/10#edit: reiterting that i'm not saying it'#*it's not anti-semitic; just that a good published work of this kind doesn't make last second claims and certainly not ones#they haven't already explicitly supported in the text#i feel the need to clarify with the very very vocal rise of anti semitism esp in the left#like yes there are anti-Semitic ties. she didn't name them. just said 'they exist lol' and this went to print#great study in poor research slipping onto shelves bc topic matter is relevant

Someone asked me what my favorite genre of book is and I said “I like fantasy and romance” and when they asked things like “what are you reading now?” And mentioned a few authors it’s like, how do I explain that at the moment I’m reading textbooks and fanfiction?
#emma posts#yes I read textbooks voluntarily#provided I can get my hands on one I want#birthday money has gone to several these last few years#and I don’t have a favorite author#i just like books and sometimes I like an author’s other work too#but I can’t think of a favorite#I’m out there sweating like ‘idk how to answer that’#my gut response is usually a non-fiction author and what impression does that give?#yeah my favorite genre is fantasy but my favorite authors are non-fiction writers#I was just put on a new medication this week and I’m able to focus for the first time in awhile#and if it’s like ‘what was the last book you read’ I’m not going to name a TEXTBOOK#but the last fiction I read was by a foreign author and I can’t pronounce their name#why are my tastes so weird?#the textbook thing isn’t a flex#I’m just weird#which is why I can’t tell random people I do that#in person#I want you all to know that the person asking was my mom’s cousin and they are AN AUTHOR#how am I supposed to come up with something to tell A PUBLISHED AUTHOR#or was this the time with the librarian? or the nurse?#im making these last few tags a month later and I can’t remember#the fact that this keeps happening means I should probably come up with a default answer#the first two authors that come to mind are a children’s book author and Rachel Carson#who I have only read one of her works#and im too embarrassed to say a children’s book author#wait. both of them are named Rachel#do i just need to find more authors named Rachel? is that the answer to my problem?#probably not but it’s weird that it (having a favorite author named Rachael) happened twice#oh god. what if my favorite author had been my mom’s cousin

Creativity and Anxiety: Navigating Buspirone’s Impact on My Artistic Life
Creativity feels limitless when you’re young and unburdened. Without the weight of brain fog and restlessness, you’re free to create to your heart’s desire. I’ve always known anxiety. Throughout my adolescence and twenties, I tackled life while enduring uncontrollable episodes of intense anxiety and panic attacks. For a time, it was just an annoying fact of life—a part of me I accepted. I’d feel…
