Genuinely: For people who are angry and frustrated at the limited number of movies and shows available for streaming, at the way streaming services pull or cancel movies and shows at will, at the way every media corporation under the sun is pulling their stuff onto their own streaming service and balkanizing access to things behind a dozen different monthly subscriptions? For people who miss Blockbuster and want to be able to just rent a DVD again?
See if your local library has a DVD collection.
If I want to watch The Mummy (1999) with Brendan Fraser? I can't stream it on Netflix, but I can borrow it from my local library.
If I want to watch The Mummy (1932) with Boris Karloff? I can't stream that pretty much anywhere, but I can borrow it from my local library.
I want to watch Star Wars or Iron Man or my favorite Disney movie but I refuse to sell my soul to pay for Disney+? I can borrow these from my local library.
Do I want to finish watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9 or check out Star Trek: Picard but resent that it's all on yet another streaming service I don't want? I can borrow season box sets of DVDs from my local library!
Obviously, available circulating collections vary a lot between library systems. (My hometown's library has all of Star Trek DS9 on DVD, for example, but my college town's library only has TOS, Picard, and Discovery.) And of course it depends on whether things are released in physical media form at all, and you won't be able to keep up with new episodes of new series - it takes a while for many things to come out on DVD.
But there can be a lot of good stuff there too. For example, I missed Nope in theaters, but I still really want to see it. So I have it on hold from my local library. I'm 73rd in line on 50 copies, so it'll be a while.
So check to see what DVD collections your library does have - it might surprise you what you can get access to, for free, in a manner that no greedy corporation can yank away.
And by checking out DVDs, you are telling the library that you use and want them to maintain and grow their AV media collection. Which is an encouragement we could really use these days.

i do really like modern trek for the most part but god i wish the aesthetics and fashion were less blatantly modern. give me fun patterns! sparkly fabrics! impractical architecture! eyeshadow! like sure it's camp and fun and visually interesting but it's also a sign of worldbuilding. if the characters are in a post-utopian society of course they're spending time on constantly reinventing impractical fashions. you can counter it with the supremely practical and simple styles from characters without the Federation post-utopian privilege. give us some alien fashions that illustrate cultural differences that don't look like they came off of a high end fashion catalogue.
(also this is about live action trek, don't worry lower decks and prodigy, you're doing great)

Part way though his reclamation; with hair still growing in, and implants still coming out. What's it like getting used to a new eye? A new face? A new life?
Thinking about Hugh again. (When I am not?)

I 100% agree with Dr Angela Collier’s 3 hour, 48 minute long video essay on ‘How Star Trek: Picard Ruins Star Trek’.
If you’re a long-time Trekkie like me and you enjoy long-form video essays, I highly recommend you watch this.

Four Years to the Day
Tumblr media
Today, 24th January 2024, marks the four year anniversary of Star Trek: Picard season 1 episode 1 "Remembrance" airing outisde the US. And because I happen to be outside the US, this is the date I'm choosing to mark this anniversary.
The first season of Star Trek: Picard (or, as I like to think of it, Star Trek: La Sirena) changed my life in a myriad of ways. I have memories, experiences, sideblogs, entire hobbies now that I wouldn't have without it. And, most importantly, it helped me find some of the most important friendships in my life to date.
So, to celebrate, I'm starting a new round of #PicardPositivity!
For those who weren't around for the first one: in the run-up to the premiere of season 2, I instigated 30 days of Picard Positivity to celebrate this little show that, at the time, had a lot of detractors and vociferous criticism heaped upon it.
Unfortunately, we are rapidly approaching exam season in these parts, so I won't have enough time or energy to make this A Big Thing (maybe we can do something proper for the 5th anniversary next year 🤔). But I would love for anyone who's interested to join the fun and take a little time together with me to remember Star Trek: La Sirena and the joy it has brought us over the years!
In true Procrastinatorproject fashion, I haven't actually come up with a good hasthag for this, so I'm open to suggestions 😅 I'm stickiing with "PicardPositivity" for now, but if anyone can make any suggestions, i'm gonna come back and edit this post with an update.
Here's to a few weeks of unadulrated admiration of our beloved Star Trek: La Sirena!
