i really really liked the lil digital care package idea from @boombox-fuckboy, so here, have some lil recs and goodies from me !!
here is a link to a google drive folder. in there you'll find pdfs of:
Different Seasons by Stephen King, a short story collection feat. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption as well as The Body and one of my all-time fav Kings
The Book of Lists - Horror by Amy Wallace, Del Howison and Scott Bradley, a collection of recommendations and little fun facts, all to do with the horror genre across different types of media and with contributions of various horror authors, directors, etc
Do Zombies Dream Of Undead Sheep by Timothy Verstynen and Bradley Voytek, a book about the neuroscience of zombie brains; fiction, obviously, but the two authors approach the funny concept with such a genuine, deep appreciation for neuroscience and its implications re: Every Dead/Sick Person We Study Is Somebody's Friend/Family; it's a great and entertaining read
Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann; a sheep detective story in which a flock of sheep investigate the murder of their shepherd
A Brief History of the Countryside in 100 Objects by Sally Coulthard, a non-fiction book about rural Britain explored via one hundred specific objects one can find while driving along the countryside
Life in the Machine, a 2 person mecha ttrpg by KiennaS
adrift in the station revenants, a 2 person mecha ttrpg by Caro Asercion
four ways to die in the future, a very quiet collection of four science fiction ttrpgs about death for no/one/two/three to six players depending on which game by P. H. Lee
games and podcasts:
poki.com - a website full of fun and chill lil mini games, including ones where you can rescue gold fishies by pulling out bars obstructing the way, you know, like in those annoying fake mobile game ads
Moida Mansion, a free horror-ish web game on itch.io
Friends at the Table, an actual play podcast with an insanely long backlog, which will thrill you if you get into it but might be overwhelming, so my rec for something rather short and sweet: start with Bluff City, available here on their website and here on youtube
Zero Hours, a podcast telling different stories about endings, and, more specifically, ends of (the) world(s) at different points throughout time, brought to you by the people behind Wolf 359
while we're at it: Wolf 359, a science fiction podcast about alien life, plant monsters and dysfunctional people, just in case you don't know it yet
Among the Stars and Bones, another science fiction podcast about xenoarcheologists researching alien ruins
I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats, a podcast where Joseph Fink, one of the people behind Welcome to Night Vale, and John Darnielle from tmg talk about art, life, cute animals, and, of course, music
Media Club Plus, a media analysis podcast made by some of the people of Friends at the Table. the first season introduces Jack to HunterxHunter, but there are a few bonus episodes focusing on other anime
last but not least, here is a great site for tv shows and movies, and if you're looking for anime/manga, go here, because the "never ever share your 🏴☠️ links!!!!!!" people are Wrong, and also you should download whatever you want whenever you can so you have it Forever
#if you like the ttrpgs pls consider checking out the creators and supporting them; you'll find them on itch.io#*#link#media rec

Kids' animation is a hit-or-miss thing for me. I feel like most Disney movies are simplified down past the point where I can really engage with them; shows like MLP have the additional problem of being self-conscious about the moral lesson tucked into each episode. It takes something unusually well-written to make me forget that I'm not the target audience and get immersed in the story.
Hilda is not quite like anything else. I find myself thinking of both The Hobbit and Moomintroll, but neither entirely fits; the humans and supernatural creatures of this world coexist uneasily, and the vibe shifts from gentle and friendly to numinous and slightly creepy and occasionally actually scary. We always know that Hilda and her loved ones will get home safe eventually, somehow, but she can't make her world safe for everyone and some conflicts have no good solutions. No Big Bad, no plot tokens or prophecies or wise old mentors with all the answers. Just a world where human civilization hasn't managed to push the magic off the map yet, and a girl who loves to explore. It's just incredibly charming, okay, try it :)

When I give my blog a makeover I always want to change the icon, but THIS TIME I don't want to until I know I've gotten at least one person to watch Trickster (the superior anime adaptation of Edogawa Ranpo's "The Boy Detective Club")
Oh well. I made the world's best header to make up for it.

I am insanely late to this party, but if you haven't yet read Experience Boost I highly recommend it. A delightful little webcomic that manages to capture so many of the nostalgic highs and lows of MMO play with friends and randoms alike. I've laughed, I've smiled, I mostly ignored the comments section, and I read the whole thing in a couple of days because I just couldn't put it down. Seriously, for a comic that ended more than four years ago, this is some seriously excellent stuff. It is a bittersweet delight knowing that there's not anymore to be had, but I loved every minute of what was there, and it's a beautiful journey.

This is suchhhh a longshot but back in 2013-2015 (mid 2010s, not sure how long the show was actually on) there was a show about a teenage or college aged spy. The first episode consisted of him delivering a pizza to a warehouse. Does anybody remember this show at all?

The other day, in a fit of exhaustion (chronic fatigue fucking sucks) but needing to stay up for awhile, I ended up on youtube in desperation for something novel but engaging enough to keep me from checking out and desperately wandering off to bed.
Anything educational or political wasn’t gonna cut it. I ended up in my to watch list because there was nothing else working, only to find a D&D Beyond playlist I’d apparently found and forgotten about: Battle for Beyond.
I have been loving this so, so much. I made it to episode 5 today, made it through some fuckin’ gorgeous moments and hilarity and FEELS that absolutely murdered me ded -
(context free spoiler under the cut)
AND THEN THIS FUCKING SCENE HAPPENED. NO CONTEXT, NO HINTS, JUST THIS LINE, BETWEEN THESE TWO CHARACTERS, YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH WOUNDED WHALE SCREECHING HAPPENED BECAUSE HOW FUCKING DARE.
Seriously reccing this one, go forth and enjoy, the cast is amazing and the dynamics will knock your socks off one way or another. It’s glorious.

I would like to strongly recommend the webseries Parallel with a very similar concept!
I should note, I hate the soulmates "we would fall in love in every universe" trope for the aforementioned "where's the tension and interest and really anything worthwhile" reasons. However, "we would find each other in every universe" fucking rips. We would interact meaningfully in every universe but sometimes we are lovers and sometimes we are friends and sometimes we are bitter enemies and sometimes we'd simply both be in the same HOA.

hello lia! do you have any movie recs/show recs (for the ask game thing)
from here
let's ignore that i'm getting to this ask literal DAYS late. but yes, i do:
The Haunting of Hill House cr. Mike Flanagan | limited series
- if you haven't seen this already get on that. literally so devastating, makes me want to pull all my hair out and melt into the floor, but i've still watched it through over eight times... the editing is perfect.
The Haunting of Bly Manor cr. Mike Flanagan | limited series
- another MF production. basically a Phoebe Bridgers song if they gave it a script and cast. "this is a love story" but it's the most heart-wrenching one you've ever heard.
Hell House LLC dir. Stephen Cognetti | feature film
- a found footage baddie! genuinely horrifying though... i felt perpetually anxious for the duration of the runtime and had to do breathing exercises after the final scene. all clowns are evil.
Greener Grass dir. Jocelyn DeBoer, Dawn Luebbe | feature film
- hilarious in a weird way, the entire ensemble acts like they know each other's secrets and are in physical pain because of it. overall, very absurd and a fever dream but one of my recent-ish faves.
Best in Show dir. Christopher Guest | feature film
- slowly fighting its way into my letterboxd top four... i rewatch this so often and it's honestly hysterical. perfect cast, really drives home just how weird dog people are. Jennifer Coolidge and Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) play a lesbian couple with a poodle.
Pussy dir. Renata Gąsiorowska | animated short film
- watched it this morning on Kanopy... i was charmed. only eight minutes long, but the animation is so fun, and very subtly funny.
Girl Blunt dir. Clementine Narcisse | short film
- you can find this on YouTube! very lush, a real-life dollhouse production. for the femmes who hate crusty men and smoke weed.
(follow me on letterboxd for more recs/reviews/lists, i try to keep up-to-date on what i'm watching over there)

LOOK AT THIS BEAUTY OF A BEAST!!!! THEY'RE SO COOL FUCK YEAHHHHHH
Gods this manga goes so hard. Imagery, worldbuilding, characterisation, intensity...it has it all. Its an isekai about a 70 year old artisan who works in the manufacturing sector who gets reincarnated into a fantasy world. By combining their expertise with the existing magic systems of the world, they can make miracle machines. The amount of research into modern manufacturing techniques, the amount of thought put into how the magic system works, the role of adventurers in society, the importance of dungeons for national power, the threat of demons, the amount of work that went into establishing a baseline for strength using specific monsters and characters so as to emphasise just how impactful his creations are.....it does all of these things so fuckin well I can't
and it has so many impactful panels. this is just one of em and holy shit I got so pumped when I saw it I started jumping its soo fuckin cool can you imagine how many hours it took to draw this 2 page spread and gods it was worth every second. there is so much storytelling happening here with this single panel when you know the full context.
and also??? all of the characters are this well designed?? even though there are so many?? characters that show up for 3 panels have the potential to be main characters, that's how unique and detailed they are again the amount of work and dedication and creativity expended in every page is fuckin staggering. AND AGAIN. THIS FUCKING BEAUT OF A MONSTER YOU SEE HERE. IT ONLY SHOWS UP FOR THIS ONE PANEL. the artist needed a monster to use for imagery in ONE PANEL and they said "I'm going to fucking draw a fucking leviathan and no one can stop me" HELL FUCKIN YEAH what a monster artist you can tell that they really really really love manga and they wanna get every single bit just right
the manga is called "Grand Dwarf ~The Smalltown Craftsman's Skills Are Unmatched In Another World~ by Saito Naotake
