Medea - A Review
Medea review is finally ready - it's a chunky one, enjoy!
Medea’s story is not an easy one to execute, and Hewlett has done a phenomenal job. It is clear she’s a classicist, from the narrative choices of which source material to lean on, to the casual application of context, this is probably going to be the best Mythological retelling of the year. As someone familiar with the original texts, and who already had a soft spot for Medea, this absolutely…

Squirming larva of the wretched brood who stole their immortality 2024 Acrylic on paper
The most Tremere still life, inspired, of course, by Andrei's attempt to insult my clan (if it even was an insult; he was so pleasant to me throughout the conversation afterwards, and I really just want to be his friend so he can keep telling me his horrible thoughts, so if it was an insult, it was very ineffective). Even though I was given my undeath by exactly the same right as he was given his, and I wasn't even there for the events that he alludes to, and I am proud of my clan and the accomplishments of my grandsires, I can't be angry, because instead I feel like that's so cute, I'm a squirming larva! And finally, twenty years after him saying so, and liking that line more every time I heard it, I had to paint it.
(Say, would you love me if I was a Tremere worm? n_n)
The house wheel is Los Angeles, 2024, the night of the 31st of October to the 1st of November. The floral diagram is meadow saffron. The medallion on the end of the bookmark, for any non-VtM-players who see this, is the clan symbol of the Tremere clan, and the worm imagery is allusion to Tremere clan history.
Should I tag this for Bloodlines? I don't know. I probably should, because I'm discussing it, and that's where the picture idea came from, and the title is a direct quote, even; but it's not obvious fanart. Hmmm.

While I'm on my Greek mythology comparisons, I can't help thinking of Medea. Medea tricks King Pelias' daughters into chopping their father into pieces so Jason can win the throne. When Jason learns of this, he is horrified and wants to divorce and remarry. Medea learns Jason is going to leave her for another woman, so she poisons the new bride's wedding dress, killing both her and her father. Then she kills her and Jason's children as punishment to him for leaving her. She says her primary goal is make sure he suffers forever. Jason dies alone and despised because of what Medea has done.
Medea's motivations and actions remind me an awful lot of Lanfear, and after looking at 13th depository it turns out she was an inspiration for her character.
#wheel of time#wot book spoilers#lanfear#mieirin eronaile#greek mythology#medea#jason#selene is the more obvious greek mythology connection for lanfear but this one is more characterization based#i'm gonna look into selene more to see if there's any closer connections other than being the goddess of the moon

I think some folks MAY have gotten the wrong idea about how I feel about Circe with some of my posts. So, to clear the air...
Homies, I love that fucked up sorceress.
I love how we're never given a reason why she turns people into animals. That's so funny and so awful. And another potion-making magic gal?!?! I love that she's just basically vibing on an island doing whatever she wants. I even love the fact that she scares Odysseus shitless! She's morally gray and that's why she's FUN.
I just sincerely hate when people try to girlboss her or have her be a victim of SA when she never was Looking at you, Miller. Especially when she was actually the one who coerced Odysseus in exchange for his men being transformed back into humans. And even then, while he was clearly afraid of her, (it's in the language of the Odyssey) she likely meant him no harm after a certain point. He just didn't know that.
Why does she need a reason to do awful things? Why can't she just be a goddess who does whatever she wants? That's the reason why I love her!!! She's fucked up!!! :D
I hate what the Telegony did to her as well! >:( You're telling me, this sorceress goddess, who makes potions (!!!) wouldn't have magic contraceptives??? Would WANT CHILDREN?!?! WITH THE PATHETIC WIFEMAN?! No. Fuck no. Eugammon of Cyrene, I have beef with you 🤬
Anyways!!! Understand all the "#anti circe" I have is simply Anti "Girlboss Circe" or the book. I genuinely think she's neat af as her morally gray, fucked up sorceress self and just get frustrated with...everything :'D
#I have these same feelings with Medea and Medusa and so many others. Penelope too. Let them do something fucked up just to be fucked up#I'm a “god forbid women do anything” in the sense of 'she did a fucked up thing. That's why she's fascinating. Don't take her awfulness#away from her!!! please! I wanna study her under a microscope!'😭#PLEASE#...I actually kind of don't like the idea of her actually caring about her nymphs :P maybe she “protects them” but like...#I see her as a “Why are all of you dancing? Oh. it's a birthday? hm okay. Just make sure your duties are done.” while not caring#whose birthday it is. She's not really shown to be close to them during the Odyssey and idk just seems in character for her to not give af#save me morally gray circe#<-making that a tag now because...yeah. She absolutely wouldn't save me though.#Mad rambles#shot by odysseus#anti madeline miller#anti circe#<-THE BOOK! I HATE THE BOOK! LET HER BE AWFUL YOU COWARDS#Why do women need to be SA'ed to be strong Miller?! >:(#...Ima say it. The pathetic wifeman is more relatable to me than Hot Snake Monster Lady when it comes to this stuff.😤#I just sincerely hate the fact that people erase what happened to him you know? It's silly but it means a lot to me.#Also I think she got bored of him immediately and simply let him chill at her place.#She's a goddess. She's got better things to do and she absolutely doesn't love him and he absolutely doesn't want her.#I don't have with Eugammon btw. He's dead and I'm exaggerating but I STILL hate the Telegony >:(#tw sa#kind of??? idk#barely mentioned but yeah#Calypso though?? Yeah. I hate her in practically everything except Pirates of the Caribbean because that's not Odyssey Calypso

Before this topic is examined directly, a brief mythological digression will be presented possibly pointing out certain parallels between Daedalus and Medea. Having never ended up in one mythological narrative, it is notable that certain points of contact can be found for Medea and Daedalus, despite them being distinguished from ordinary mortals through special abilities, with the first being magic and the second being craftsmanship: 1. It is true that having a discussion about a precise chronology in a myth is impossible, but Medea and Daedalus are “contemporary” characters – Theseus, the one who defeats the Minotaur imprisoned in the labyrinth built by Daedalus, is Medea's step-child. 2. Daedalus is also connected to a solar cult like Medea (Medea, as the grandaughter of Helios; Daedalus as a servant of Pasiphae, Medea's aunt and Helios' daughter, a craftsman having flown towards the sun and lost his only son due to the sun's power); 3. Medea and Daedalus have committed the murder of a close relative in their homeland; 4. Like Medea, Daedalus also runs away from his homeland and then leaves his new homeland, where he loses his child (children). Both of them run to safety by flying away. 5. Medea defeats Talos, Daedalus' creation, with her sorcery. 6. And finally, an episode of great interest to us – the murder of Pelias carried out by Medea through someone else, Pelias' daughters, with the body of the king Iolcos being boiled in a bubbling cauldron(In general, a person's rejuvenation or them being brought to life by being boiled in a cauldron is not foreign to other epochs and cultures 71). This manifests a certain likeness to Daedalus' adventure, although being of a later character, is greatly interesting – having escaped from Minos, Daedalus seeks refuge in Sicilia with Cocalus, the king of Kamikos. When Minos comes looking for Daedalus, Cocalus makes him agree to bathe in the bathhouse. Here he is killed by Cocalus' daughters, or according to a second version, Daedalus throws him into the boiling water himself and kills him.

I looked through Greek mythology retellings, and such on Amazon, and Goodreads. Why? Because I wanted to see what kind of badly writen book can be there, and because I like to suffer.
And I found one.
And... it's an Ariadne x minotaur book. Just why?
Honestly. The book cover is telling. It looks bad, and generic. There is a defrent book cover for it in Goodreads. And it's batter, and less photoshoped probably, but still not good. It's still generic.
For some reason the Labyrinth is probably a nightclub and fighting arena, which is why? Why did the writer had to transform the Labyrinth into a night club and fighting arena? Also for some reason Styx here is a city. And why did he has to be part of a court? I'm sorry but how doas this make sense? Asterius is not a god, and has little to do with the underworld. And based on how little regard the writer has towoards he original myth, my gues is that Greece looks suspiciously not Greek but American in this book.
Why did she had to write Ariadne as an assassion. Her not being a princess actually worsens this. In the original myth, her helping Theseus was an act of rebelion/defaience ageinst her father, which made Theseus abendoning her more tragic. Also what sister? I looked up, and traid to find which sister this was about. The first one is Acacallis, and I did not found any sources that say she was killed. The second one is Phaedra who in the most well known telling commited suicide. And the last one is Xenodice, who we only know that is the dauther of Minos. That's it. Eather the writer will write one of them being killed by someone, or will make up a sister for her (who I bet will have a non Greek name).
Shiping them is just bad. If somone want's to write a story where there is a conection between the two, then there is a compeling sibling tragedy. The tragedy of eather Asterius slowly lossing himself, and becomes a blood tirsty monster, whaile Ariadna trying to help him, but realising that her brother is already gone, and will nevor come back. Or Asterius becoming a monster because of Minos's treatment of him, whaile Ariadne is unable to help.
So please someone tell me. Why doas this book part of a 7 book long book series, with a 3 book long spin off series, that is part of a 13 book long book universe? And how is this a fresh take?
#ancient greek mythology#greek mythology#Ariadne#the minotaur#Asterius#I looked up and the seconf book is a Medusa x Perseus which is also bad#The third one is a Hades x Persephone story which makes sense but the forth book is a Hermes x Selene story which doas not make sense#The fifth one is a Thanatos x Hecate story the sixth one is a Charon x Circe story and the last of is a Erebus x Medea story#Most of those don't make any sense#And the other 3 books are about Egyiptian mythology#I might make a continuation to this post
