Medal of Honor Monday: Roger Donlon

At about this time in 1934, a future army captain and Medal of Honor recipient is born. He passed away several days ago, just five days shy of his 90th birthday.

Roger Donlon almost wasn’t in the Army at all. He’d originally signed up to be an Air Force pilot, but then ended up in the Army instead. The Air Force’s loss was the Army’s gain!

During the Vietnam War, Donlon found himself in command of a 12-man Special Forces unit at a post near Nam Dong. Several hundred South Vietnamese and anti-Communist Chinese were at this “outpost of freedom,” along with Donlan’s men, in early July 1964.

Everyone knew that something was coming.

Since 2024 is coming to an end, I am posting my updated medal wall! I am looking forward to next year and I’m already signed up for the 2025 Pittsburgh Half-Marathon. I am excited for what the new year will bring!

Reflecting on my 7th consecutive Houston Half Marathon :

2018: 1:54 (my very first half marathon)

2019: 1:42

2020: Virtual (COVID era)

2021: 1:45

2022: 1:49

2023: 1:45

2024: 1:48

Yesterday was full of lessons. They changed the course this year to an out-and-back route with constant rolling hills—definitely need to work more on hill training! The warm start at 70°F also threw me off, and I forgot my salt tablets, which led to some hamstring cramps around mile 11. Had to pace myself to finish strong with another big race coming up in just six days. Las Vegas Marathon ( TCS New York City Marathon Virtual)

Every race teaches me something new, and I'm always grateful for the lessons!

Apparently, very few people in my age group want to do these events. I did the Individual Pursuit (2km) and the time trial (500m). Both were good events to gauge where I am after 6 months of track cycling and should allow for decent comparison from year to year.

Medal 🏅 Monday Thanks to my sponsor @krampkrushers for fending off the cramps and keeping me fueled during a long and tough day at one of the hardest 70.3 Ironman races in the country. I had a personal fastest time of 2:28 split off the bike but suffered during the run as it was nearly 8 miles on the soft sand beach 🏝. Didn’t push it to the limit because I have Kona World 🌎 Championships in a few weeks but proud of finish of my 9th 70.3 Ironman race. Medal of Honor Monday: Thomas Kelley

At about this time in 1969, a United States Navy lieutenant engages in an action that would earn him the Medal of Honor. Thomas Kelley had joined the Navy almost on a whim: He was about to graduate from Holy Cross College when he discovered that some of his friends were joining the Navy.

Kelley figured he might as well join, since his “two pals” were. He was soon serving in the Navy, enjoying it so much that he decided to make a career of it.

Hi Everyone! Happy #MedalMonday! Atlantic City Marathon, done! 💪🏃‍♂️🏅🤗 New PR and time goal success! 3:58:00 Pushing that proverbial wall back a bit. Eventually still hit it, a couple short breaks, but able to regroup enough to finish in time. 🤗 Hydration game was on point. Can't believe how much I used to skip stations. 🤦‍♂️ Course was flat as advertised. A couple hills early on, flat remainder of the way. Weather was nice for the most part. Cool to start. 🤗 Wind picked up for a good portion. 💨including when I started to feel it. Final stretch was calm with the sun starting to beat down. Scenery was boardwalk, a few mi around a highway (couple hills), boardwalk, few mi around an upscale neighborhood (margate), boardwalk to end. Decent fan support along the course, although it did thin out a bit in the final stretch. Great seeing Gaurav out there, same pace group, and meeting up with him and his buddy post race!
