Whump prompt #57
"Oh dear... are you scared, my darling?"
Whumpee sat on their knees and kept their gaze on Whumper's feet, not daring to look up, not daring to move. They had to move. Had to respond. And so they barely managed a curt nod.
"And why is that?"
They took a deep breath. "Be-- Because..." Another. Come on. Should they be honest? Scramble for something? But they didn't have time to come up with something that resembled the truth, something he'd believe but that didn't leave them all open and bare. An answer. Now. "Because I don't know what you're going to do."
The smug smirk only grew wider.
"Shall I tell you, then?" He stepped closer. "Or..." A hand on their chin and they finally looked up. "Do you want me to show you?"

any prompts/ideas on how scars can be revealed but with a defiant whumpee who is now with caretaker but isn’t wanting to share anything that was done to them but caretaker *has* to know so that they can help?? sorry if that’s too specific haha just looking for scar reveal ideas really :)
I'm always a fan of accidental reveals :3 Like
A shirt hitched up when they're taking a nap.
Caretaker walking in on them changing.
A careless motion hitching up a shirt or a sleeve and quickly pulling it down again.
But if Whumpee always refuses and pushes Caretaker away, but Caretaker has to know... Well, why do they have to know? Because if it's dire :3 then it can be done with some drama.
A wound that reopens and Whumpee desperately tries to cover the stain in their shirt.
Or a wound that reopens and Whumpee doesn't notice but Caretaker sure does.
Caretaker lightly taking their arm, wrist, waist, and Whumpee violently flinching away in pain.
Bones that haven't set right, wounds that haven't healed right and Whumpee tries to ignore it all, but one day it will catch up to them.
A lightheaded feeling that makes Whumpee sway and stumble, the 'I'm not feeling so good, no, back off, it'll be fine in a minute'.
Spoiler: it won't be fine in a minute.
That in various gradations, leading ultimately to "the collapse".
And Caretaker finally sees all the scars.
But those are more injury reveal tropes. For actual scar reveals:
Caretaker could take matters into their own hands and force Whumpee to come clean.
Or they're sick of all the 'it's fine really' so the next time Whumpee bites away pain or stumbles, they swoop in and pull up their shirt.
"When were you planning on telling me this?!"
"Will you sit still, I have to treat this before you pass out of blood loss or the wound infects and... oh."
Also fun: Return of the Whumper who sneers in glee at all that's transpired and Caretaker's cluelessness.
"You haven't told them? You really should. Tell them."
Forcing them to take off their shirt and reveal all the scars.
Tieing Whumpee up, cutting their shirt away and Caretaker gasps at the scars. Combined with the "Ohh, they didn't know? Well, now they do."
Whumpee collapsing and Caretaker doesn't know what to do so they take them to hospital and the doctor removes their shirt and.... yeah :)
A Whumpee thinking they're alone, it's super hot so they finally allow themself to take off their baggy hoody. And yeah, they weren't alone.
They're happy to finally wear their favourite shirt again, it gives them a sense of calm, of finally being home again. What they didn't know was that the neck of the shirt plunges just a bit too deep, or their sleeves are just a bit too short.

Whump dialogue XXXVI
"Do you know what I did to them?" Whumper purred, a hint of pride in his voice as he circled Whumpee.
"I've seen the scars," Caretaker bit back in reply.
"No, I mean..." Whumper made a gesture and they both watched as Whumpee dropped to their knees in front of them without any hesitation. "Do you know what I did to them," he repeated in a more sinister voice.

My #1 post of 2022
Whump prompt #52
A Whumpee who is wearing a wire!
They’re caught. And Whumper notices the device. But instead of taking it off and crushing it, he smiles and just leaves it on. While torturing Whumpee to learn more about who’s listening on the other end.
And Caretaker can do nothing but listen :)
Bonus if after a while, (maybe after Whumpee’s been a defiant shit for hours and has taken it all well) Caretaker just hears a broken “No... no, no, please, PLEA--” and with a loud smash and crackle, the transmissions ends and Caretaker is going out of their mind with worry.

As always, @applesandbannas747 is putting into words what I was thinking better than I ever would.
First of all, I have to clarify that I haven't bought the new issue and, truth be told, I'm not even sure I will. I don't think I can keep reading this without my mental stability being affected until it's finished and I know what to expect. Yeah, I know, it sounds crazy (ADHD). Tell me about being attached to your fav hyperfixation.
It's exactly what Jack's pinpoint. I've come to the conclusion that, rather than a FENCE fan, I'm a fan of what FENCE could've been. Don't get me wrong, I'm always happy to hear that the comic is still going on and we get to know how the story continues. I will lose it if the comic gets cancelled and we never get to know how it ends bc I want to know the canon story. But I feel like I'm getting upset over something that didn't exist in the first place.
Ok, let's dive into it, shall we?
I think that, effectively, the narrative of FENCE is very weird. Many of us know how the story goes. It started as monthly issues, then a pause, then another thing; we believed it was cancelled because taking so long to announce another issue wasn't a good sign? Then it wasn't cancelled —yayy— and we got RISE which was . . . okay, I guess, but we could already tell the cracks of the storyline and mainly the characters.
Yeah, 18 months is a lot, and we had TOO much time to get bored and be in need of new content. This is where fanfic writes and content creators on platforms such as this one come into the picture and create these magnificent fics that are the literal definition of doing God's work. What was the problem here? We had high expectations due to what had been promised in the premise and previous issues and the long wait, so we wrote, drew, etc, bearing these things in mind.
The canon story doesn't add up to the image we have in our heads anymore. Mainly because of fanfics. Yours are amazing, Jack. I personally love the way you write every character and the fact that they're . . . just not like that is insane to me. They're not like that!! I swear my brain can't comprehend this information. Do you mean to tell me that Nicholas was always meant to be a golden retriever??? No, you can't convince me.
He wasn't in CANON. Or at least his character wasn't simply reduced to that personality trait. I said this in my last long rambling about FENCE almost a year ago, and I stand by what I said. C.S. Pacat has priorities (completely valid) and it's pretty obvious FENCE is not in the realm of the main ones. So consequently, we get strange development of characters — may I say disappointing — and an inconsistent storyline, always tied to the possibility of getting cancelled any moment.
FENCE is very anticlimatic bc is a series that is solely being carried by its fan base. That's the thing, and I also believe that's why, despite being this tiny, the fandom creates such great pieces. We barely get any canon content, and when we do, it's just not what we expected. Thus, we end up making up our own depiction of the characters and events that we'd like to have seen, which is fueled by fandom feedback. I'll never not be bitter about the fact that we barely got any rivals phase. This was marketed as a RIVALS to LOVERS. WHERE'S THE RIVALS??? Where's the Nicholas and Seiji we were promised? I'll tell you where they are: in the fandom's collective imagination.
I'll always be in LOVE with the first 12 issues, and I'll always be in love with writers works in ao3. I swear the day Jack decides he's done with FENCE is the day I die (jk, I don't want to put any pressure on you 😭🤚)
Well, I think I'm done rambling for today. Heck, I'm sorry this looks so serious, but I could talk endlessly about this topic.

I haven't done one of these in ages... mostly because I've been kept way too busy to read much or even think about compiling what I did get around to reading orz But I have had a chance to read at least a few fun things this year so far and decided to round up some of my favourites!
Tumblr media
Asterix and the Griffin
I finally read the newest Asterix comic. My main takeaway: it wasn't one of my favourite Asterix stories, but none of the new ones have been, but I do think it's one of the best by this new team so far. The finale was beautiful! Also, I hate Papercutz and would fistfight them in an alley.
Tumblr media
The Complete Brambly Hedge
I read this back in January and it was so soft and sweet. I love these sorts of children stories, and the art was stunning. Honestly, I kind of feel like I need to buy this one. Any story about tiny little guys living in a big world is a set up for me to fall in love, and this one came complete with cute little mouse house cutaway diagrams!
Tumblr media
Carry On
I was super skeptical about this one to start with, the Harry Potter satire just felt... way to heavy-handed, but when it finally clicked... boy did it ever click. I think this ended up being my favourite book that I've read this year so far, I am completely smitten with Simon and Baz, they were excellent protagonists and the audiobook I listened to did excellent work.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins: Caleb Widogast
I listened to a few episodes of Critical Role and enjoyed it, but never managed to stick with it, instead I mostly absorbed this series through dashboard osmosis. Still, I knew enough that reading the comic was a real treat. The art was beautiful, and poor Caleb really had a rough go...
Failed Princesses v5
The latest volume of Failed Princesses. Me and my brother are hooked, though as he put it you could cut the drama with a knife. In a good way. Bless these useless lesbians.
Tumblr media
Heartstopper v1-3
I started watching the Netflix show, so obviously I had to go back and reread the first three books! And finally get my shit together and order the fourth in... Continues to just be cute as anything. Would recommend both the graphic novels and the show, they're both acting as a balm for my soul.
Tumblr media
Kiki's Delivery Service
Did you know the Ghibli film was based off a children's novel?? Because I sure didn't! I bought this on a whim when I saw it in the local bookshop, and it's adorable. It fits that common 20th century kidlit genre where you have a main character going through little mini adventures/experiences in each chapter. The first book is almost a one to one with the movie, though it diverges at the end. Still, for a kid's novel, it was a delightful, quick little read.
Modelland
This is an actual nightmare that me and my girlfriend were reading outloud to each other for a few months. We finished it in January, but at what cost. I have never read anything so absolutely off the wall fucking weird. I have no idea what Tyra Banks was thinking and I'm not convinced she knew either. Way more fun than it should have been, it was captivating in the same way as a car crash.
Tumblr media
Mr Popper's Penguins
A classic kidlit novel I had always meant to read and just had never gotten around to. Finally knocked it out in a day, and found it very charming. I can see why it's stuck around in our collective conscious.
Tumblr media
The Outbursts of Everett True
I had seen comics of this floating around on tumblr for a while and finally decided to pick up a copy and read it. Despite how old the comics are, it really does tap into a timeless secret desire to just kick the shit out of people who mildly inconvenience us. Is it serious, or take itself seriously? Absolutely not. Have all the jokes aged well? HECK NO! But there was enough that felt VERY relatable and satisfying that I definitely though it was a worthwhile read!
Tumblr media
The Purple Smurfs (and two other stories)
I had never read any actual Smurf comics, which feels odd given how big it was a few decades back. It was an enjoyable comic with very pretty art, though it reinforces, once again, my desire to feed Papercutz to rapid ladybugs. Why are they the only game in town for Smurfs comics?? These are classics, I'd thought they'd be everywhere!
Tumblr media
Spiderwick v1-3
I've been working my way through the Spiderwick books this week, since I hadn't read them since I was a kid. They really are superbly written little novels. They never try to tackle too much in one book, and ensure what they do is imaginative, slightly horrifying, and accompanied by the most gorgeous art you can imagine. I'll never forgive the movie they'd attempted, because this series was a work of art.

What inspired you to write the fic this way?
my main goal with sits was to make it read like an old myth or storybook, an old tale that would be passed down for generations, the majority of the fic is written in that style exactly, but the overall story definitely is (and it does come through a bit more in how the backstory is told and some of the more important scenes)
that said, the main narrative is written much more slice-of-life-y, one of my biggest inspirations for this fic is the manga monogatari (bride’s story), it’s a really nice series that explores the daily life of people in various areas along the silk road, it has that simple, everyday life feel that i love and really wanted to write into sits! that’s where the random details about desert living and the tribe’s lifestyle come in (warning for anyone who might want to check out mono though: it does have an arranged marriage between a 20 yr old woman and a 12 yr old boy, it’s being played as a more platonic/familial relationship thus far but i can totally understand why it would put people off, so just a heads-up before anyone jumps in)
What scene did you first put down?
the first scene i actually started writing was the very first scene! but the very first scene, the one that spawned this entire fic i haven’t actually gotten to yet, it’s gonna be v near the end and i’m dying to finally reveal it because it’s gonna be Big.. but i shalln’t spoil it here, just something for my readers to look forwards to
What’s your favorite line of narration?
ok so like i said i’m shit at remembering any of what i write and it’s a bit more than just a line but fuck it:
Gaara froze, in fact, everything did. The soft whistling ofthe wind cut off into eerie silence, the constantly shifting sand stopped witha suddenness that was entirely unnatural, Naruto glanced away for a second andsaw that some grains were being held in the air, perfectly still. He turned hisgaze back to the spirit before him, his expression hadn’t changed at all, hewas still glaring, but his eyes were unfocussed, like they weren’t reallylooking at him.
Naruto was too scared to move, to speak; hecould only stare and pray that he hadn’t just sealed his own death warrant.
What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
again, not a line, but i really love this exchange between nart and ameno so effing much:
“So mature… You’re growing up too fast, how am I ever goingto keep up?” she asked, mostly to herself judging from the distant look on herface.
He slowly drew his hand back once her face wasdry and gave her a confused look. “You won’t have to; I’ll just carry you withme.
What part was hardest to write?
well i might just be saying this cause it’s the most recent struggle i faced (among many) but the chapter six reALLY killed me. trying to find the right way to describe the exhaustion and constant fear took many, many weeks and i’m still not sure i really nailed it (hopefully something i’ll be able to fix in the next chap)
What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
other than being the first multi-chap fic i’ve ever written, this is actually one of my oldest fic ideas ever, seriously it’s been kicking around in my head for a good five years or so now so there’s that
it also happens to contain basically All of my Special Interests; naruto, deserts, nomadic culture, boring minutia, swords.... honestly the only thing it’s missing is cats (though i’m sure i can find some way to work them in too..)
and, honestly, this is kinda my magnum opus? or at least that’s how i’ve always thought of it, i had actually planned to not start writing it until i’d already done a few other fics because i wanted to make sure my writing skill was at its best before starting such an ambitious fic.. yeah that didn’t happen, but i think that’s actually worked out alright, jumping in with a harder fic right at the start of my writing ‘career’ has been a bit of a crash-course and taught me a heck of a lot, i still think it’s gonna be one of the best things i ever write though. it just has a very special place in my heart
Where did the title come from?
well tbh i’m kinda shit at titles, so i usually just hunt through the first chap looking for any particularly poetic-sounding line that would work (though in this case it does have a nice little easter egg, since in arab folklore jinn are made of smoke!)
Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
hmm not really? the whole thing is meant to be very fantastical and unreal (despite all the slice-of-life stuff), the only real-world insp comes from my research into bedouin lifestyle and such
What do you like best about this fic?
gaara! i mean ofc i like him in anything but this version of gaa - silent, detached, barely human, incredibly complex - is one of my faves and he’s really fun to write, we’ll be finding out more about him as the fic goes on and when we do it’ll make his actions before now both more understandable and less at the same time (he’s quite the paradox)
What do you like least about this fic?
the inconsistency. i feel like i must’ve gone through about ten different writing styles throughout the course of it and it bothers me that i haven’t quite got that storybook feel i was always aiming for, i’ll probably do a rewrite when i’ve got more experience under my belt and try to make the whole thing a bit more cohesive
What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
as with btc, i mostly listen to soundtracks, since songs with lyrics really distract me when writing, since i like to try and match the music i listen to to the setting/tone of what i’m writing i try to listen to classical middle-eastern music (though i’ve had a hard time finding many albums of just instrumental stuff, if anyone has any recs i’d love you forever!)
in addition to that there’s the soundtracks of Journey, Bastion, Dreamfall Chapters and the Prince of Persia games and for instrumental artists i really like Break of Reality and Tina Guo for sits insp!
Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic? What did you learn from writing this fic?
hmm, well i’d love it if people learned a bit more about the cultures i’m writing about (and i’d like to learn more of that too tbh, i’m still finding out new things that i actually got wrong earlier on in the fic), maybe even get interested enough to go looking for more info themselves, because there’s a lot of stuff that i simply won’t be able to go into much detail about
as for myself, well ^that and also it’s just been a rEALLY good experience in so many small ways - writing longer fics, writing in general, character interaction, introspection, action, plotting, description, suspense, mystery..... i could go on but yeah, basically it’s helped me grow as an author in Every Single Way and i’m sure it’ll help ever more before it’s done!
