lok remake idea without the rant

the legend of korra will get more episodes and filler content to showcase the krew interacting more and mako and bolin will get training from korra in fire and earth bending traditional forms which will help them improve ( though mako will still be the more talented bender of the 2.

korra is meant to be aangs opposite so how about korra training the bending members of her krew in contrast to how aang was trained by his gaang

regardless lok will end with makorra getting back together

“always thought that pacing was an issue with Legend of Korra too, having only 13 22-minute episodes to tell a season-long story made it feel rather rushed. 1. the lok remake with asami being an equalist spy

I feel they planned on asami being an equalist spy but changed it when they got to the episode where it was supposed to be revealed with hiroshi but changed their minds without going back and changing anything they wrote beforehand.

( I dont get why asami wouldnt know hiroshi hated benders

“she would serve as a foil to Korra. Asami is rich, traditionally feminine, and when she and Mako meet she showers him with praise and lavish offerings. Korra’s a tomboy, doesn’t come from money, and she and Mako are constantly snarky toward each other. I think it would work well if when it was revealed Asami was a spy, Mako would have an epiphany where he saw the girl who really cared for him and liked him for him was actually Korra all along. it would have made the love triangle resolution a lot smoother, and given Mako a clear choice on which girl he should be with, even if it was an easy one.

and of course I agree with this post so I would make some changes with kuvira in both my ideas for a b4 remake and a full one

( though to be frank I prefer a book 4 remake which ends with makorra getting back together be made beforehand to make a rebuttal to the idea that the mako who made the mistakes he made in original lok. Where asami was just a sweet girl needed to be specifically punished for mishandling the love triangle. I feel korrasami was just popular due to the fact its a same sex ship and the desire to spite mako for daring to be flawed lets be real here korra was just as responsible for the love triangle as mako he didnt do anything that required punishment. ( korra kissed mako forcefully he kissed back in the heat of it due to his feelings and then kept it from asami and was a bit of a jerk thats all

he shouldnt have kept it a secret from asami

makos flaws and mistakes were acknowledged and treated as such in the original lok the claim that because book 1 ended with something good happening to him it was ignoring his mistakes or treating him as if he was in the right is bs.

also in the b2 moment emphasize that mako and asami didnt get back together but asami was interested in on him

and the scene before mako got arrested asami showed up to his room and tried asking him out making a move on him and he gave in ( she would have been making these attempts

mako had just given in due to lonelinness and didnt want to lose asami since in his eyes he lost korra and bolin and him grew distant

As Cousin Tu said in Remembrances, Mako’s afraid of disappointing people and ends up inevitably disappointing everyone in his attempts to avoid disappointing anyone.

I don’t think he had feelings for Asami. I think he was really surprised when Asami kissed him the first time, but hoped that would be the end of it (he seemed really uncomfortable about it, to be honest).

Of course, that didn’t happen, because Asami was still looking to get back together with him (likely because of the instability in her own life). He didn’t really seem to respond until the scene immediately preceding his arrest, and even there, it took a lot of pushing to get him involved in anything romantic.

And so, I think Mako was more motivated by the desire not to upset her than because he thought she needed him. Of course, that just meant more hurt feelings in the end, but that didn’t mean that avoiding hurt feelings wasn’t what motivated him.

I agree that Mako seemed more afraid of losing/upsetting Korra than Asami – the show made it pretty obvious which one of them Mako felt the strongest about! – but I don’t think it’s impossible for him to have felt really afraid of losing/upsetting Asami, too.

It seemed to me like Mako was reacting instinctively to situations as they came up. So, when Korra was gone and Asami was pushing to spark something, Mako was concerned mostly with losing/upsetting her (possibly exacerbated by him feeling like he already had lost Korra)… but when Korra came back, his fear of upsetting/losing her again overpowered any feelings he had towards Asami.

also introduce in b4 izumis daughter maybe have a scene where she gets a crush on mako but having solved his problems with emotional conflict and avoiding conflict he out right rejects her softly ( in book 2 when asami kissed him he looked uncomfortable with it an was glad that she didnt follow up he was so afraid of dissapointing people he couldnt even say no to asami (plus he was still hurt about breakup and wanted stability ) so mako learned ho w to say no and that sometimes in life you end up disappointing people that doesnt mean you will burn bridges

mako rejecting izumis daughter would represent him growing past his flaws of being so afraid of disappointing people he hurts everyone an example of maturity ( optional instead have the scene be mako sparring with iroh and izumis daughter and winning paralleling how korra first appeared winning with fire bending like how korra first appearance in b4 after the fight reminded me of makos first appearance )

this applies to both options

possibly have a conversation with katara about losing his parents at a young age and having to raise his sibling ( it would just be nice to see the krew (

maybe explore how there is triad spies in the police department and due to makos history some people suspect he is one or want to use him as a scapegoat ( an part of the reason mako did well in truth because mako kept to himself and focused on his work not socializing with his coworkers it prevented information from being leaked out when he got into a case

also have mako gain some special fire bending type

the purifying fire

An evolution of Energy Reading, allowing a firebender to cleanse dark energies in humans and spirits as well as neutralise poison and other toxins maybe even prevent someone from bending an element inside their body ( like nullifying blood bending) by burning the blood bending grip and stopping breath bending if the fire was used beforehand

be it the b4 remake or the full lok remake mako gets a purifying fire and heat sense though when it comes to purifying fire it would be a recent think b4 wise and he was experimenting with it when he broke free of a bloodbending grip

and it being just before he got news about korra

( or it happened a bit before that so he began on training himself to be able to control it at will before he immediately went to korra and figure out if it could effect poisons and toxins/korras physical issues

also change amons appearance as an adult so he would have a darker skin tone like he had when he was a kid ( possibly amon and korra would be related to each other given how kid amon resembled korra though I may be imagining things

also have the krew actually have bonding moments together expanding upon lok

and fire chakra deals with willpower and is blocked by shame have an arc where mako deals with his shame regarding his work with the triads (and in remake make it so while bolin worked the numbers mako did as well he had seen people be killed by triads and is partly ashamed of not doing anything (

which leads to makos growth as a firebender learning a purifying fire

I mean Japan associates fire with purification so it being possible to create a fire bending technique ire to purify your body of a benders attempt to control an element in your body and to purify poisons makes sense

and it would prove that general wrong

( post b3 he asked katara if she knows anyone who could help train him as a firebender ( in the b4 remake during the timeskip he learned how to fight h2h so there wont be any weaknesses to eploit he doesnt want to be used against korra like what happened with tenzin

( he ended up talking with zuko who he went on a bit of a spiritual journey with

( I mean bolin gained a special branch of bending ( him being the only one who uses it ) so why not having mako invent one

which is what happened with katara and toph)

or mako could expand lightning bending to reading the bioelectricity in someone’s body to tell when someone is lying/predict their next move during the b4 time skip he can tell when someone is lying

(I mean it is a skill that I can imagine would fit for a detective and something batman would like to get ( lots of people joked about lok being in Gotham and then compared mako to batman due to their backstory )

in this advent he would be shown doing the dual lightning trick that ozai did

give mako a moment with katara and/or zuko

mako was said to be zuko lite

which I can see but he also has similarities to katara

and it would be neat to have moments with them

like in the situation where asami wasnt an equalist spy which I will call lok remake option 2 ) zuko was there during remembrances and he brings up he made much worse mistakes when he was young and stupid

and zuko helped guide mako with his mistakes

and mako and kataras conversation will bring up the similarities of their backstories and how katara had to act like a parent to sokka etc

( mako in the lok remake keeps the scarf with his grandma outright refusing it because it was makos keepsake from his parents )

I saw some of the fandom reactions to Mako before watching tlok and after watching the first few episodes I was a little annoyed at how not terrible he is. When I think about the things that happened in the first two seasons I interpret it as him honestly not knowing what to do as opposed to wanting to be hurtful. He hasn’t had a parent since he was 8 and his only companion has been his little brother. Of course he knows nothing about communication or conflict resolution.

And Bryke just kept introducing potentially compelling storylines between Bolin and Mako and doing nothing with it or playing it off as a joke. The bending bros aren’t getting along in season two? We could’ve seen that the tension was due to Bolin wanting to be Mako’s brother and not his son and Mako not knowing how to let the dynamic of their childhood go. Instead, we got Bolin letting fame go to his head. Bolin decides to adopt Kai and mentions eating out of garbage cans. We could’ve seen them acknowledge the traumatizing nature of poverty and how both boys are projecting onto Kai in different ways, but no. Bolin’s just a goof, so funny. If Mako had to be a cop he could’ve had disagreements with Lin that lead to him explaining that something needed to be done to address poverty, because if there weren’t so many poor kids in the Republic City then the gangs wouldn’t have an endless stream of new recruits. We definitely should’ve seen Bolin genuinely concerned about the prospect of Mako going to prison, but stupid jokes were a better use of time I guess. So. Many. Missed. Opportunities.

( I have noticed that every woman makos age that he knew wanted to get with him it would be neat for him to have a female friend who didnt want that

Biggest change to the initial setup? No Prince Wu. Instead of an obnoxious overgrown child of a Prince, our heir apparent is introverted, lacks the confidence to refuse just about anything, and is terrified of being in front of crowds. He’s the (implied-to-be illegitimate) child of a distant relative of Hou-Ting and a Republic City citizen. Oh, and he’s all of ten years old. In other words, everything about him screams “Raiko chose this kid as a convenient puppet” (instead of offhandedly implying it once and forgetting about it as was done with Wu). All of the time Wu wastes on comic relief in After All These Years is used to explain the political situation: the prince is a figurehead meant to display the trappings of royalty and legitimize Raiko’s chosen advisors. Kuvira’s supporters hate him not just because he’s royalty but also because they think he’s essentially giving the Earth Kingdom away to an imperialistic foreign power. Mako’s there to protect him both because Raiko ordered him to and because he’s one of the few cops the prince is comfortable around; as such, Mako actually feels bad for the kid and wants to protect him. (This prince is legitimately terrified by the scary adults throwing pies at him and bursts into tears as soon as they’re out of harm’s way. Mako comforts him and makes him feel a little better.) Korra Alone is close to perfect and stays pretty much as-is, albeit with Korra’s loss in the Earth Rumble ring being far less embarrassing – she gets some hits in, and the end makes it even clearer how distracted she was by Dark Avatar Korra. The Coronation follows up on the political changes. Instead of being all excited about how awesome he thinks the ceremony is going to be, the prince is afraid – of being on stage (Mako assures him he’ll do fine), of being king (Raiko assures him that his advisers will do all the work), and of Kuvira (Raiko assures him that she’ll step down). The prince thanks Kuvira and lets her speak the way Wu did in the show, except that it’s sort of implied that he’s looking for an excuse to not have to stay up at the podium for longer than necessary. Kuvira, of course, uses the opportunity to take over… and specifically points to Raiko’s use of the prince to control the Earth Kingdom as a reason why she’s justified in doing so. (The prince hides behind Mako when this happens. =( ) Some of the time saved by not having Wu freak out about the loss of his throne is used to show us the meeting of the world leaders, where they talk about why they think Kuvira is dangerous (she’s very with-me-or-against-me) and what they can do to stop her (not much as long as she limits her ambitions to the Earth Kingdom).

The Republic City part of Reunion is way more tense because Team Avatar are looking for a terrified kidnapped child instead of an aggravating jerk. (The prince still gets to ask Korra to go into the Avatar State because he wants to see her eyes glow, but it’s actually kind of endearing since he’s a little kid.)

and we could have cute moments with korra and mako taking care of kid wu

also we can make it so mako has a good rep among the orphans

It is a touch weird that the moment Bolin and Mako get some actual characterisation, suddenly people dislike Bolin and accuse Mako of hijacking the show.

One episode devoted to a policeman attempting to crack a conspiracy does not a hijacked show make, particularly Korra’s business will probably eat the rest of the show. Mako’s finally got something to do beyond just being Korra’s bf/probending… and people are complaining about it?

Also I’d wish people’d stop calling Bolin “Sokka-lite”, he’s his own character and he might be more comic relief than the others he still has a personality of his own. Mako treating him like a child probably didn’t have the best effect on him, both making him kind of act childish which in turn leads to Mako being dismissive of him. Just saying that there’s actually a reason for why he acts as he does, rather than just “lol look at the funny guy!”.

Considering how, even in the previous season, Mako’s inability to take his sibling seriously or accept his help lead to him being abducted by Equalists, it’s not really surprising that Mako wasn’t really quick to react when Bolin ended up in an abusive relationship. He probably chalked it up to another of Bolin’s “wacky hijinx” and chose not to get involved when really, if there was a situation that required his surrogate parent touch, that would have been it.

I don’t know, I think that they do have unique personalities between the two of them, and their actions do make a degree of sense within the context of the show. Mako treating his brother like a child and dismissing him lead to Bolin being more open to being manipulated by Varrick and the movie star lifestyle, for example.

Can’t help but think that Mako really makes these problems for Bolin, both by treating him like a baby and dismissing anything he does as childish, which leads to Bolin making stupid decisions as he hasn’t really been allowed to make adult decisions or take responsiblity for stuff. Which leads to him falling in with gangsters when he attempts to help Mako raise some cash. Or dating an unstable and violent person. Or getting confused as to what the concept of “acting” is…

I like the characterisation within Legend of Korra, the behaviour of all the characters makes sense within the context of the show itself, just like with Aang and the characters in Airbender. Of course Korra would be a little arrogant, she’s know she was special from a very young age, but that doesn’t make her a bad person. Of course Kya would be more “free spirited” than her brothers, she has neither the responsiblity of continuing the Air Nomad culture like Tenzin nor the need to overcompensate for a lack of bending like Bumi.

Actually, come to think of it, parenting and how it can effect a character’s personality seems to be a theme running through both the two shows. Korra’s isolated childhood made her kind of naive about how the world functions, just like how Mako’s babying did the exact same thing to Bolin.

Mako and Bolin are actually working out to be pretty interesting. Which is actually pretty good going for characters pitched just as comic relief and “Zuko without the angst”.

maybe we can emphasize the above effects on mako and bolin by having katara come in and talk with them about their relationship and gives mako advice

lets carry on the mako babying bolin issues and carry it on in b3 where katara brings it up or they can have a scene where katara brings it up when she meets them either trying to warn mako about babying bolin at southern water tribe

or the conversation begins while they are on the boat to confront zaheer.

where mako learns to stop babying him

and zuko an mako can have a conversation where mako talks about his own issues/past

and makos mistakes are brought up and zuko will act as makos iroh

bringing up how mako was so afraid of dissapointing people that he dissapointed everyone ( which works in any of the remake ideas be it a lok remake with asami an equalist spy or not )

where mako trains in the traditional style of fire bending under zuko and its brought up that while probending is good and all probending abandons the spirituality and development of the traditional styles)

and have mako and zuko talk

so the meditation would lead to his development ( maybe mako and zuko have talk while Korra is bed ridden and zuko offers to guide him and be his fire bending teacher since mako felt guilty since if he was stronger he could have taken out the water woman much earlier)

( maybe his part of remembrances with some focus on his issues which would lead to his thoughts on korra and how she inspires him)

( its mentioned that mako and bolin in b1 have begun to eat more nutritious food ( mako especially always made sure that bolin got food more often then him when they were on the street)

and mako began to train his body more to learn how to fight without his bending so he trained with korra after bolin was kidnapped.

mako turning down zukos granddaughter after the timeskip remembering zukos talk about how makos flaw being so afraid of disappointing people he disappoints everyone and while wanting to not hurt people is good sometimes the desire to do that can hurt more people

mako realizes its best to straight up turn her down immediately for not doing so may cause a situation where he caused her more pain.

like how if he just turned asami down when she kissed him or when she asked him out for a date rather then avoiding it due to desire to not hurt her the pain she would feel would have been lesser then it had been in b2 finale etc

and mako and korra could have the talk which makes it so that mako was helping korra even before tenzin came in while asami completely failed in helping/supporting korra

I’m not sure I’d get the time to write a fic, but I can definitely analyze the way the conversation might have gone.

So. First things first: Mako would have been a bit more confrontational initially. He definitely wouldn’t have used tea as a pretext to get her to talk; instead, I think he’d ask her, “Is there something wrong? You’ve been really distant lately and I’m starting to get worried.”

That, I think, could lead into an explanation for the only-writing-to-Asami thing, which would be really valuable in terms of Korra’s characterization. Mako could confirm that he’s willing to support her no matter what, and Korra could agree to try to let him in more.

From there, the conversation would move back onto the same general track: Korra’s thinking about what Toph said, and it’s really weighing on her.

“I’ve just been thinking about something Toph said. She told me that the world doesn’t need me and it’s basically pointless to try and stop Kuvira.”

I think Mako might actually ask whether Korra was mischaracterizing Toph’s philosophy – “Are you sure that’s what she meant?“ If he did, I think the conversation would go down a much more productive line much faster, because he’d get Korra thinking about why Toph said what she said (ie. she was challenging Korra to push back against the idea that all human efforts amount to naught) instead of framing it as too ridiculous to consider.

It seems unlikely that Mako would be able to work in a speech like Tenzin’s (though I suppose his thing about how much she inspires him could be repurposed to that end =) ), but I think he’d be much more effective at guiding Korra away from unproductive lines of conversation (“am I a good or bad Avatar?”) toward the issues that were really bothering her (“how should I understand what Toph said?”).

plus asami had to build up her company after taking the loss and rebuild on who she is etc

I would have asami leave the the group in b3 ( and rejoin at the end framing her helping korra get dressed as partly motivated by guilt of not being there) a

either have bolin genuinely worried about mako being arrested and while he doesnt believe it was varrick he believes in mako

That's the end of it.

Whether it slowly rots in Mako's head or not, is never addressed. If he's mad, he doesn't show it. If he distrusts them, he doesn't show it. If he lives with the idea that the people he cares about don't care about him, he doesn't show it.

It's just dropped because at the end of the day, no one actually cared about it. That's just sad.

I suppose. XD I wouldn’t exactly call Mako a Zuko Expy, though… at least not more than I’d call him a Katara Expy. He’s “the firebender” like Zuko and “the one forced to grow up too fast” like Katara, but he’s definitely his own person rather than a copy of either of them.

Looking at Mako and Zuko’s respective indecisiveness, for instance, it isn’t coming from the same place at all.

Zuko’s indecisiveness was always a sort of nature-vs.-nurture sort of thing. Zuko’s innate temperament was good and he had a functional conscience that told him not to do bad things… but he was brought up in an environment in which it was impossible to gain the respect from his father that he so desperately desired without doing bad things. His inability to commit comes from his own clashing desires and was resolved when he realized that he might never get validation from Ozai but that was okay.

Mako’s indecisiveness, on the other hand, is much more other-centric. Most of the things Mako struggles with involves a situation in which someone is bound to get hurt no matter what, and he’s forced to decide which response is the lesser of two evils. He has one primary motive – to avoid causing pain – but it’s in conflict with itself even when there isn’t a second motive for it to conflict with.

That difference, I suspect, explains the differing audience reaction, too. Zuko’s conflict is a rather masculine, Hero’s Journey “confrontation with the father” sort of thing, while Mako’s is decidedly not.

mako never needed to go through the suffering that zuko did during atla during lok ( mako did suffer and go through hardship since his parents died before lok began

people had ignored that and just saw him as the guy with 2 girls who are attracted to him etc and only started to like him after he had gotten stuff taken away which is annoying

since amon and his brother can foil/parallel mako and bolin ( heck amons brother was once cute and soft reminding me a bit of bolin )

and in the b4 remake ( keeping the past volumes same ) he just got stronger to keep up with korra for he feels if he was able to take down the water arm lady sooner korra wouldn't have gotten captured

( so we can keep some of korra and asamis friendship scenes) or some other excuse to separate her from the krew so kuvira can come in

She starts as lawful police officer, travels with the Krew to Zaofu and gets literally possessed by Su's ideas of progress in B3.

Kuvira as a member of Team Avatar would have been amazing. It’d have definitely added a ton of weight to Book 4.

I think her backstory in Zaofu is pretty important to her character, though, so I can’t see her joining the team any sooner than Book 3. So here’s what I’d do, changing as little of the first half of the show as possible:

Turn Asami into an airbender. This would create a perfectly reasonable transition point for Asami and the Fire Ferret trio to go separate ways – she’d leave with Tenzin to go to the Northern Air Temple in In Harm’s Way. That’d leave an empty spot in Team Avatar as of The Metal Clan. Introduce Korra and Kuvira early in The Metal Clan. Maybe she’d come over to Korra after Su introduced herself but before Su called Korra on her lie – she’d tell Korra how much the change Korra made in the world inspired her, and maybe express a bit of frustration that Su didn’t mention that she was her foster child. Have Kuvira assist Su in teaching Korra to metalbend – say, Su uses Kuvira to demonstrate techniques on, or something, then has her go back to her guard duties. Involve Kuvira directly in Team Avatar’s search for the traitor. It’d be a good way to show how aggressive she can be towards people who betray her trust, as well as give her more of an opportunity to become closer to the team. Have Su send Kuvira along with Team Avatar to find Aiwei. This is the real changeover – from here on, she takes much of Asami’s role. Korra and Kuvira are the ones who stay behind when Mako and Bolin go into town, giving them more time to talk. Kuvira’s the one Mako sends off with Korra on Naga. This requires some rethinking in regards to their capture – earthen barriers aren’t going to mean anything to her. I’m thinking they get taken by surprise and the Earth Queen’s forces threaten Naga (offscreen; Kuvira tells Korra about it when she wakes up). The adventure in the desert goes differently (the escape would be more about Kuvira being an unexpected metalbender in a metal airship than about the airship being a hunk of junk), but it offers a good opportunity for Kuvira to be a bit overly willing to do nasty things to the airship crew and Korra to hold her back. If Korra still ends up frying the sandshark, Kuvira kind of calls her out on it. ;) The fight on Laghima’s Peak goes a bit differently – Kuvira doesn’t get thrown off the side by a combustion blast incidentally, but instead jumps over the side purposefully in order to save Tonraq. Kuvira wants to go to Republic City to make sure Korra’s going to be alright, but Su tells her she can’t. Cue a very similar Book 4, except that Korra is a lot more invested in Kuvira’s fate, Bolin has a better reason to side with her, and we’ve already seen some of the characteristics that define Kuvira, like her aggression, inability to deal with betrayal, and her issues with Su.

in a full lok remake it would be emphasized that aang didnt invite kya and bumi on those trip because he felt they would find it boring since it was mainly a spiritual journey/monk stuff with the fun parts that tenzin mentioned just being a break from the monk stuff ( the point was to be a spiritual journey and explore air nomad/spiritual sites to learn about the history) and that the fun stuff were just small parts which could be called breaks from the air nomad stuff

also in the full lok remake mako would be outright called a prodigy and the reason he wasnt stronger was due to lack of training. and spiritual issues

It is a touch weird that the moment Bolin and Mako get some actual characterisation, suddenly people dislike Bolin and accuse Mako of hijacking the show.

Mako and Bolin are actually working out to be pretty interesting. Which is actually pretty good going for characters pitched just as comic relief and “Zuko without the angst”.

I've had a rough time when it comes down to networks. They're hard to come across because there's never one unanimous tag they use for others to find them. I usually scope out successful writers' accounts to see what networks they use since that's the only legitimate way of finding active and successful networks.

Most of the time, you'll find inactive networks that haven't reblogged in years, though some writers still use the tag in case readers search through the tag. I've come across networks that cater to certain specialties. For example, networks that only reblog a specific group, networks that only reblog smut, networks that only reblog gifs, etc..

And applying to networks can be strenuous and at times annoying. I've applied to a network and the very next week they closed applications, so I thought I got ghosted. They eventually accepted me half a year later, but it was so unprofessional of them that I didn't even bother reblogging the acceptance post. I've joined a network that did both gifs and fics, but their account was 99% gifs to the point that I thought I was mistaken in thinking that it was a fic network as well. I also thought that I was potentially the only fic writer in the whole network.

The most irritating aspect of networks is their Discords, which are oftentimes obligatory for no reason whatsoever. They'll form cliques and private group chats, alienate/badmouth other members, will actively ignore you if you're not part of their friend group which makes conversation nearly impossible. It gets so toxic that you know the moment you enter the conversation and they stop talking for a few minutes, they're in their DMs talking about you. You'll try to offer help or advice in writing and they'll just end the conversation right then and there, or they'll completely skip over your message and keep talking to their friend.

Though all in all, networks are challenging, as you already know. I just wanted to update you on the status of Tumblr networks currently. EXO networks are few and far, and I think most of them are inactive, so you'd probably have the best chance of just using one of their inactive tags in case readers still use them. There are a few big networks out there that'll still reblog EXO fics, so that would probably be your best chance. Hopefully it all works out for you! I've also considered forming my own network, but because of that Discord experience I talked about earlier, I've been hesitant to do so for fear of attracting a few members with similar demeanors. Though I'm sure the network you make would be much better!

I honestly just want to make a blog that exo writers and readers could all congregate and use to discover and reblog each others work and interact if they wished to. nothing too crazy. I also have discord ptsd so i dont even wanna use that thing nomore lmao

Ig the biggest issue would be spreading the word and seeing how many people would even interact with it. I have a feeling there are more writers/readers than we think there are tho 🤔

maybe this has been said but with the robin/vickie stuff, we have a canon lesbian who is canonically in love with someone who is in a hetero-presenting relationship, making the ga think its a deadend. we see so much pining and then the giving up but Steve told her he has hope.. its revealed vickie broke up with her boyfriend and now its set up where you have to have not watched the last scene to think this isnt happening..

comparing to byler, we have will who is canonically gay and in love with mike, who is in a hetero-presenting relationship to the ga and a lot believe this is the end of where will's feelings would go. however we still have a lot of pining.. from both sides... and then we have will's 'giving up' (not sure on the wording but its sort of like he's accepting that mike isnt like him just like how robin didnt believe vickie could like girls) we then see Jonathan step in a bit like Steve does and comforts will. then again, the final scene is so byler foreshadow-y that the only way you think it isnt happening is if you didnt watch the scene

Yes most definitely! I’m obsessed with this parallel, and ironically, I took a screenshot of this comment on an anti Byler post earlier today:

Some people are so close to getting it, but for whatever reason, they don’t press any further. Yes, what we are describing IS very similar to the Rockie situation because we’re meant to see the parallels lol. Not just in a general “oh this is kinda similar” sense, but down to the exact framing:

Other than Will being blurry in this picture, this is the exact same shot, down to the placement of the characters. The gay character (Robin, Will) is in the middle looking longingly at their presumed heterosexual love interest (Mike, Vicki) embracing their current girlfriend/boyfriend (El, Dan). When Robin looks at Vicki and her boyfriend, she and the audience get a sinking feeling in their chest because we assume it’s unrequited, but Steve refuses to lose hope, and Steve turns out to be right because Vicki is bi. In the case of Will, both Will and most of the general audience still assume Mike is straight and that Will’s feelings are unrequited, but the story is incomplete. And if Vicki ended up being queer, what can we infer about Mike???

Then you have the presumed heterosexual love interest of the gay character turn to look at the gay character with some degree of guilt and sadness in their eyes. For Mike, we see all of Finn’s amazing microexpressions, almost like he’s processing both Will and El in the same space and feeling conflicted about his feelings before he says, “Everyone’s here,” and the Willel reunion happens. For Vicki, her boyfriend asks her who that was and she says, “Someone from band,” but there are more emotions swirling underneath, and this becomes clear when Rockie finally has their romantically-charged conversation at the end of the season. Rockie is obviously endgame. And if so, what does does that say about Byler???

Likewise, you’re so right, the final scene of the season (as well as the cabin scene, honestly) play a similar role in establishing Byler going forward, even though there’s a lot more work to be done next season with the painting and everything:

And I hadn’t even thought about comparing Jonathan to Steve, but Jonathan’s life-giving convo with Jonathan does play a similar narrative role as Steve’s convo with Robin. You’re so right.

There’s no way these parallels are accidental. So in conclusion:

i always wondered if you ever read any violentine/twg fanfiction and if you have could you tell us your favorites? Or what tropes would you like to read? Idk I just really like this ship and since there was so little content I could find so i read a lot of shit 💀 but I hold a special care for it since it was one of the first fandoms I entered and finding out Clem was bi meant a lot to me cause you don't see a lot of bi representation that isn't like "I like fucking anything that moves🤩(Yea Im looking at you Elite)”.

So yeah I'd like to hear you thought of fanfiction and stuff.

i tried once or twice but didnt get farther than the first chapter or so on the few i tried 😔 i kinda for the most part stopped reading fic after high school to be fair, so im very particular about what i Do read when it comes to fic now. and on ao3 at least since im afraid of wattpad there really hasnt been anything that held my attention (at least in the past. like i said i havent tried looking in a couple years so who knows). i need plot/character development heavy stuff that i can really sink my teeth into and i didnt really find much of that... and the "tropes" i like are more determined by which characters im applying them to so i dont always like the same ones across the board

DESPITE all that tho im still slowly slowly SLOWLY meticulously steadily working on my own oneshot that i WILL FINISH I SWEAR its over 20 pages currently and only like 2/3? done?? and half edited BUT it IS outlined so..... i just have to.. you know..... actually Finish it....

i posted some snippets from it a while ago (HERE) but here's a couple longer ones since ive written about 10 more pages (plus like 5 in outlines) since then. im Really particular about the flow of my writing which is like.. the main reason why i take so long to write.. gotta fix it until it Feels Right

A comfortable silence seemed to settle over them then. The wind outside the shack still blew harshly, whistling against the broken windows. But as the girls sat by the warm glow of the fire, and listened to the crackling of the burning logs, it was enough to melt their tension. At least a bit.

The silence continued until the fire began to dwindle with the last of the logs. "We're going to have to start burning those..." Clementine said as she looked at the loose boards they had kicked aside earlier.

"I got it," Violet said as she stood, not even giving Clementine a chance to move. As she grabbed a board and kicked hard at its center, trying to break it in two, Clementine twisted her mouth. Not at the other girl, but at herself. She was still getting used to her new limitations, and it frustrated her knowing there were just certain things that she couldn't or struggled to do now.

The boards had been sturdy once, but due to age and exposure, they had eroded enough that Violet was able to break them with relative ease. She threw a couple of the pieces on the fire and set the rest by the hearth as she returned to where she had been at Clementine's side. She gave her a soft, reassuring smile as the fire came back to life, and Clementine gave a soft smile in return, breaking her from her thoughts, if only momentarily.

She heaved a sigh as her eyes were drawn back to the missing portion of her left leg. She thought about the trek awaiting them in the morning, and her mouth twisted again. "Ugh, walking through all of that snow is gonna fuck up my leg..."

The soft smile on Violet's face became mischievous. "Don't worry, I can just carry you instead." She said it nonchalantly, but the fluttering in her chest betrayed her.

Clementine quirked her eyebrow in response to the bold statement, smiling skeptically as she laughed "Uh, aha, yeah right."

"What, don't think I can?" Violet responded, the look on her face unbothered by the other girls reaction. "Brody was the one who carried you to the school after you crashed and I'm, like, at least as strong as Brody was."

Clementine's face dropped at the revelation. "Wait-... Brody brought us back?"

"Uh..." Violet hesitated at the change in Clementine's voice. "Yeah... Her and Marlon. She was the only one he would ever take outside the safe zone." She explained, and as an aside to herself said "Huh, guess it makes sense now..."

The playful atmosphere had now quickly disappeared, only to be replaced with a quiet, somber one. In the short time Clementine had to get to know Brody, she felt they had started to become friends. However, there weren’t many good memories made between them, and so Clementine more easily remembered the bad ones.

She could still remember that stormy night in the cellar clearly, could remember the sounds of Brody's inhuman screeching. The hot blood on her hands as she fought against the turned girl for her life. The guilt sinking in her chest like a black hole as she looked over what she had done. What she had to do. Clementine mourned her in the way she mourned everyone else she had lost. And it never got any easier.

Violet watched Clementine as she internally fought through her feelings, and once again regretted her words. She didn't want to think about Brody, either. And felt guilty over unintentionally bringing those awful memories to the surface. Clementine told them what Marlon had done that night, yet never talked about what happened after. But Violet had helped the others with the bodies, had seen what Clementine was forced to do. She remembered the sight clearly, as clearly as she remembered feeling that Marlon got what he deserved.

"Maybe we should try to get some sleep before it gets cold in here..." Clementine suggested tentatively.

Violet shifted, stretching her arms out in front of her, catching the last of the heat from the hearth on her fingers. "We should use the bed, then. It'll at least be better than the floor. Plus, there's a blanket."

Violet stood up then, stretching her legs as Clementine looked up at her. "Are you sure that thing isn't completely rotted?"

"It should be okay. We only brought it in here a little over a year ago."

"'We'? Why?"

"Uh-" Violet started at that, averting her eyes. "Um... Minnie and I... we kinda... used to hang out here..."

"Oh..." Clementine wasn't sure what to say to that, but it did confirm her suspicions. So instead, she relented. "Okay."

But she hesitated, looking between her leg and her prosthetic where it still sat propped against the side of the fireplace. "Hmm..." Should she put it back on? The bed wasn't far...

"Here," Violet reached her hand out, noticing the hesitation, "let me help you."

Clementine eyed the outstretched hand, considering her options, and once again twisted her mouth at her new limitations. She kind of hated this. She had done everything on her own for so long, and now...

"C'mon, it's okay."

She looked back and forth between Violet's face and outstretched hand a few times before finally relenting. "...Fine." She really didn't want to lace up her prosthetic just to immediately take it off again.

Clementine took her hand, and Violet helped pull her up to stand. They leaned close as she found her balance, gripping tightly at Violet's shoulder with her free hand. It only took a short moment, and once Clementine stabled herself, her eyes locked with Violet's. They both started a bit when they noticed how close they had become, face to face.

"Aha. Um, you good?" Violet asked, slightly flushed.

"Yeah," Clementine said, hiding her blush better than the other girl. "Thanks."

I think I have an anwser for you earlier post on thr SMA interview. You said you found it weird how Chris wanted someone who knows how to apologise and does not like to argue. I have not read the interview so I do agree that this was (at least) worded very poorly, especially with him having such a young gf compared to him. However I think I know what he meant. I interpreted it as someone who owns up for their mistakes? And who does not like to argue for the sake of arguing? I hate to say it but there is a toxicitytrend going around (Watch the citygirls/cityboys up trend on tiktok) People are becoming more selfish everyday. I don’t know if it is the same in the millenial age group, but I can find myself agreeing with these statements if you’re looking for a partner in gen Z? I’m sorry if I’m not clear, English isn’t my first language

I think you misunderstood the point tbh

My issue is that it sounds like he expects a lot of arguments from his partners. Why does he do that? Could it perhaps be bc he isnt that great of a partner and has never really worked on himself bc he liked being the frat/fuck boy he was in his 20s and into his 30s? There were a lot of things he did when he was with jenny that were uncool, and the way he always "hides" his partners also feels strange.

There have always been rumors about him being a total fuckboy and hooking up a lot. As well as the drugs. I have always believed them to be true, tbh. The truth is that Chris has been single for so long bc he wanted to be. He liked the attention and he liked the women and he liked not having any obligations outside of work. And I don't blame him. Because I am the exact same way.

The only difference is that I am aware and honest about this. I am open about the fact that I do not want to be tied down bc im not ready for the commitment. I am open about the fact that I enjoy my independence and freedom. I think the reason people are angry is bc he's been selling himself as a family man who so desperately wanted to settle down but couldnt find the right woman.

I never bought into that shit, I've always known he was shady but I chose to ignore it.

The problem now is that I no longer can. It has become blatantly obvious that he's shady. This is not normal. I don't care what y'all think, it just fucking isn't. If he didnt look the way he did, if he was balding and didnt have a fucking sixpack, y'all would have been outraged about this. The only reason chris isnt balding is bc he got hairplugs bc he started losing his hair at 30. Im saying this to remind you that HE IS 41.

He has greys in his beard and his hair. Wrinkles that he's had forever.

He can no longer keep the same lifestyle bc his metabolism has slowed. He can no longer work out as much. He is a dinosaur.

These are all words he used to describe himself during his SMA interview. Which came out the day before he announced he was "seriously dating a 25 year old and happier than ever" right before he took a power walk through central park while yanking her with him and then letting go of her hand as soon as he'd passed the paps he bought for the occassion.

Me checking the notes and seeing two people are like "yea": .

its literally so fucked up like, i was a little nd kid who could not understand or keep up w a lot of the rules most of the time and instead of helping they just enforce them harder which honestly just does nothing lol. like i still dont get it and now im just distressed, but id get punished more for being distressed. eventually i was resolved to be Good (which meant a lot of masking so job well fucking done i guess) and i tried my hardest to Not flip a card at all for a whole year, it was like, my resolution for that year basically.

and that may sound like the card thing "worked" but i still didnt understand the rules at all i just understood the consequences which is just the wrong way to go about doing things, its not teaching kids anything at all its only keeping them in line for the adults' convivence, we were being taught obedience not life lessons that would actually help us growing up.

i remember i made it a fair amount of time w/o flipping my card until one day my teacher helped me clean out my folder and saw i had unfinished work, and she made me flip it because i was playing earlier even though i had unfinished work... but the only reason was because my folder was so messy i couldnt see the work in question! but the card rules were so absolute that circumstance didnt matter, and no matter how hard i tried to justify it shed just get more angry at my distress and she told me to just go cry in the bathroom for a while and then i should come back and flip my card twice (an extra time for being a crybaby i guess). as a kid i didnt understand but i figured she must be right because shes an adult, and im still not good. as an adult i think she was just on a weird powertrip w all this authority she held over 7 year olds and i genuinely think shes a bitch for that lol

on top of that its fucked up that the card flipping thing was so public, it was on a board just sitting there for the class to see with our names on it and everything, like, it just feels so intentional. a way to shame the kids through their peers to further force this sort of conformity between them. and this often caused bullying! i remember there were kids who hard their cards flipped all the way to red almost every day, they were always made fun of by the other kids for being like, Bad. and this would just make it worse, kids would lash out in frustration of their situation, teachers wouldnt help them and would just keep using the same card flip method thats obviously failed them, and is just further encouraging their behavior as well as that of their peers. like, for what? does this tactic just make these poor kids to be sacrificial lambs? "dont be like The Bad Kid or this could be you so stay in line and be Good"? assassination classroom was right bro they were right

it really just prioritizes the overall conformity of the class over any of the students growth in any healthy way, its too one-size-fits-all, but children grown differently and arent a monolith, and circumstances can be different too. you have to actually communicate with those kids, even if theyre very young and communication is hard for them. like, its your fucking job to help them, talk to them and see what the problem is instead of trying to correct it like theyre dogs wearing a shock collar. its just a pavlovian response, they understand "action causes card to flip>card flip causes punishment>dont do action" but they dont understand why they shouldnt do it at all unless you actually talk with them. theyre kids but theyre people too

fucking tired. i had work earlier and customer service jobs are basically hell so. also i spent like half an hour trying to photoshop an eyepatch onto a chicken but chickens arent meant to wear eyepatches so it was not working. i finally just gave up but i actually like the finished product (my pfp) so maybe it was worth it. also i now have photoshop abilities so maybe you should all be scared.

I love how people will defend crwby when they give jackshit about rep and their fans. Like with clover (i know they didnt make it official but just look at eddies stupid tweet). They fucked up, it was queerbaiting, so the best course of action is to imply that harriet had feelings for clover and bad mouth the dead man. They could have just say "everyone of us was acting stupid and he died" nooo clover wouldnt leave qrow alone and robyn says later that clover is the lesser huntsmen. They could just say "hey clover was like a brother to harriet, she was his second in command, this hurts her very much" nooo clover was important for harriet, you know important. How does that even fit? They didnt have the balls to stand to their mistake and write about it, so they just twisted and turned so they could ignore what they wrote the last volume. Brilliant (and yes i will forever be bitter that qrow doesnt take responsibility for causing clovers death and just whines about his semblance)

Honestly, the way that Qrow/Clover was handled is a big blight on the company in my opinion. There's a great blog called @fairgame-was-queerbait where you can see lots of information about why Clover and Qrow was one hundred percent queerbaiting, and people are right to be mad about it.

The way that the writers really spent their time pointing fingers instead of actually admitting that they messed up... And the way that members of the fandom have been refusing to recognize it as queerbaiting, BYG, or problematic has also been staggering. This was something that deeply hurt LGBTQ+ RWBY fans, especially mlm that weren't otherwise represented. Eddy Rivas has apologized for the hurt fans went through, but not in a way that recognized that the hurt had been a direct result of their actions. And whether that action was directly intentionally contributing as a writer or just not checking the animation and marketing or letting the show go as is despite seeing it and knowing how it'd be taken, or never telling people not to get their hopes up and that the ship was not intended despite knowing that it was quickly becoming one of the more popular RWBY ships is besides the point.

Fans have been quick to say that obviously FG was unintentional and that Clover couldn't have been meant to be read as gay because "the writers would never do that," while ignoring Miles Luna's discussions regarding Pilot Boi. He had been told about how Bury Your Gays was a very harmful trope and therefore decided not to include Pilot Boi being gay, but then 'was kicking himself' over not doing it anyway because Pilot Boi was popular. The fact that these fans are so delusional to believe that the writers would never do something, when they literally expressed that they wished they'd done it. Why is it so hard to believe that the writers would cross that line with Clover when one of them openly regretted not crossing that line earlier?

(Although as a side note, I wouldn't necessarily go so far as to say that Qrow 'caused' the death of Clover. Everybody lost braincells there in that fight and he definitely wasn't without sin and I for sure think he ought to have been guilty and taken responsibility for having broken Clover's aura, plus letting the blame fall to the guy who was literally fecking murdered was terrible. But Qrow didn't cause Tyrian to kill Clover, and he didn't cause Robyn to start up the fight in the first place when he and Clover were both being fairly peaceable at first.)

But! The way that RWBY said 'let's drag Clover after his death, imply things about his character that we never showed to be true, and have Robyn of all people say Qrow's just better than him.' Also, if Qrow really freaking cared about Clover in the show enough to keep that pin (that by all rights should've gone to the Ace Ops,) maybe he could tell Robyn to keep Clover's name out of her thin mouth, and be actually angry that she started the whole damn fight in the fricking first place. Honestly, I didn't like Clover at first and I don't ship Fair Game, but God almighty, the frustration I've felt watching the fandom start harassing people who liked him or the people that are mad about queerbaiting... Now I do like the idea of Clover and enjoy writing for him, and it's actually because of all the haters. So congrats to the RWBY simps, they've turned me into a Clover fan.

And if Qrow ends up with Robyn, I will... Post angrily about it. Using caps lock. After I finish vomiting over having to see it.

Here's the link to fairgame-was-queerbait again, I'd recommend anyone who wants to see the tweets and the screenshots check it out, I was so glad to find their blog and be able to see all this stuff for myself. It's honestly staggering that people are denying that there was queerbaiting, and saying that fans just 'invented this ship in their heads' or have no right to be upset. BTW, nobody better try that invalidating stuff in my comments. I'll block on sight.

the sound of your serene voice rang through the mentioned’s ears, the male’s left eyebrow quirking upwards as he turned to you expectantly with the sounds of the tv playing in the distance.

“hm ?”

he hummed in the same manner of how you called out his name, yet still in the softest and sweetest tone you could hear, it’s basically honey to your two ears.

“i love you. for as long as i could remember, i loved you, more than just a friend.”

you and shinsuke have been friends for as long as you can remember. you two met when you first moved in his neighbourhood, and his grandmother would always invite your family to have dinners in the kita residence frequently, leaving the two of you to spend a lot of time with each other, and thus, your close relationship starting to bloom.

when shinsuke told you about him joining the volleyball club in his first year, you had very mixed feelings. you were scared that he will soon be uninterested in spending time with you, his closest friend; you were scared he’ll lose his time for you; you were scared of the thought of him leaving you alone; you were scared of losing him, because you loved him.

but at the same time, you were always there to support him. the last thing you could ever possibly do is stop him from doing what he loves. and so you didn’t object his decision, supporting him from behind and cheering on him all the way to his third year — the nationals.

you thought he’d forget about you — he didn’t. he would always text you and tell you how practice went, what was going on in his team. he didn’t need to tell you how the match at the second day went in the finals, because you were there. you watched as the ball landed one last time on their side of the court, leading to their ultimate loss against karasuno.

seeing him so sad broke your heart, yet you still supported him until the end — and this was the end. yet, you still comforted him by visiting him later on, as he spilled to you whatever was going on in his head. it was a good fight, they had tried their best, but it wasn’t enough. and now you two were here, on the couch, watching the match replay for god knows how long.

now, as you impulsively confessed your undying love to your very best friend, you couldn’t help the smile on your face as you said those very words. the thought of him is already making you feel happy, feel loved, feel alive.

little did you know, those are the very same feelings you make him feel.

his eyes locked onto yours, a subtle blush dusted his cheeks as he spoke, cupping your face between his two hands as his lips softly kissed yours.

“i loved you too. for as long as i remember, and until the end of time.”

miya atsumu !

it was no secret to the people around you that atsumu and yourself had something more then just friends going on. everyone could see the way atsumu looked at you, treasured you as if you were the most precious diamond he knew. and for him, you were.

you were the only one oblivious to his advances. the flirting, gifts, random moments of affection; it didn't take a genius to know that he had some kind of feelings. yet, it seemed like no matter what he did, you blew it off. 'nah. i doubt he likes me, we've just known each other for forever. he's comfortable with me, that's all."

you only denied all of these people for one reason. you didn't want to get your hopes too high. over the many years, atsumu wasn't the only one who caught feelings. you did for him as well. you knew how he acted, you thought his actions were normal.

so you can only imagine the surprise that took place when one day you went to the gym to give the team some snacks for practice. it wasn't your plan to eavesdrop, it just happened to take place.

"'samu, what else do i need to do to get y/n to notice the way i feel? no matter what i try i can't get her to like me back."

the voice was one which you could recognise from everywhere - atsumu.

you placed down the bag of treats, clearly processing the words. apparently, osamu heard the subtle russel of the bag, looking back to where you stood.

"looks like you just told her, good luck."

was what osamu said, nodding towards the door - to where you are. atsumu looked like a deer caught in headlights, before looking down as he watched osamu walk off, leaving you two alone. you came out from your place behind the door, approaching the male. it was clear he was nervous, but at the same time disappointed.

this wasn't how it was meant happen. he wanted to ask you out with some grand gesture, tell you under the cherry blossoms in spring or during the winter season when there was many attractions to wow you with. not now, not here in the gym of your school.

"so, is it true? you like me?"

those words only made him freeze more, stumbling over his words while he tried to find what to say. it was so unlike him to act like this. usually he was the confident and loud one, not the shy one who struggled to form a sentence.

"yeah ... i'm sorry, i know how this must be. if you don't feel the same i can wait ... you don't need to return the feelings!"

you couldn't help but let a soft laugh leave the lips that atsumu had thought about so much. the action only seemed to rise his already sky high anxiety. your hand went to cup his cheek, gently pushing his head up to look at you. the next thing you did took both of you by surprise, placing a short kiss on the tip of his nose.

"idiot, i've waited long enough for you to say that."

guess you were both oblivious to each other's feelings, but right now both of you couldn't be happier. simply standing in the abandoned gym which the volleyball team was soon to have practice in, standing in the others embrace.

"can i call you my girlfriend then?"

rintarō suna !

you and suna were always seen as opposites, two who shouldn't get along. you were outgoing and loud, he was more quiet and deadpan. it was an odd duo, but you two made it work. many people didn't understand you two, but you never thought of it as a bad way. it was like you and suna had your own little world, away from the troubles of reality.

it wasn't an odd scene to see one at the others house, so it was no different then usual with you sitting on his bed, humming along to the music playing from the speakers. you had been in this room thousands of times, even had a small drawer of your clothes for how often you sleep over. your parents were hesitant at first to let such a thing happen, but over the many years the doubts they had about suna had faded.

you watched as he packed a duffel bag, only one way it could really be explained. he was going away to nationals for who knows how long. leaving you back here, to simply watch him from the tv. he offered to let you come with, but between your studies and club activities you didn't get the time for it. it was clear that it bothered you - the fact you were quieter then usual, on your phone mindlessly scrolling - rather than trying to help him as you often would.

"you okay?"

the question held no pressure as he moved away from his closet, sitting next to you on the bed. those two words was all it took for you to cave in, shaking your head as you pulled him into a hug which he soon returned.

"i'm sorry i can't be there to support you .. please don't be mad."

you mumble, clearly surprising suna. you always did attend every one of their games, always sitting in the front row of the excessive cheer group. you never did participate in their behaviour, but you did definitely cheer whenver you saw suna land a spike. ever since he started, you never missed a game. even if you didn't know what was happening half of the time.

"why would i be mad? i know you’re here for me, that's enough."

his fingers ran through your hair, a small smile on his face as he looked down to you. as much as you did appreciate the words, it's not like it made you feel much better. the sense of guilt was still there, even if there was no reason for such a thing. you felt his hand move from your hair, down the side of your cheek until it tucked under your chin. perhaps it was the atmosphere, perhaps it was the feelings you had for him that you pushed away for so many years - but you didn't pull away.

"you always have been here and i'll always love you for it."

suna's words came off no louder than a whisper, head touching yours. the shock never left your face as you heard those words leave his lips. sure, you had said it plenty of times before, but that was truly platonic. it didn't take a genius to know this was in the quite opposite way. you didn't say anything back, but the next actions were all he needed to know you felt the same.

what that action was? a simple tilt of his head, connecting your lips to suna's. that was all it took to know, your feelings weren't just one-sided.

So! After all of that, we finally have the results! What is the general opinion on the ships in the Grishaverse? Well, that’s for you to read below! It’s actually pretty interesting and, while some parts make sense, there were definitely some parts which... surprised me... Anyway, onto the results!

(note from mod emily: i tried to bold all of fritz’ comments, but i might have missed a few! be aware there are two of us analysing here :))

The Grisha Trilogy

The first book series we asked about was, of course, the first chronologically: the Grisha Trilogy. The most popular ship, with 83% voters for this series selecting this, was Genya/David (Fritz was glad to hear that; Yes I am). This is likely due to the lack of alternate romantic interests in the series, which seems to be a major issue for Alina’s ships. It also seems to be one genuinely enjoyed by most fans, in contrast to Darkling/Alina and Mal/Alina (each around 30%) and Nikolai/Alina (just under 20%), for which I have definitely seen plenty of debate. The second and third most popular ships for this series were Tamar/Nadia (55%) and Nikolai/Zoya (47%). Interestingly, Genya/Alina (43%) and Zoya/Alina (30%) ranked surprisingly high, especially considering how few of my friends and associates I hear talking about them. Good for them!

Honourable mentions:

Alina/Sun (no doubt inspired by that crack fic I wrote a while back) (Still havent read that out of fear)

Alina alone (a common concept among those surveyed, though most mentioned it later)

Zoya/Genya or Alina/Zoya/Genya

Six Of Crows Duology

This series was a little less divided, I would say. Predictably, Kaz/Inej came out on top with a whopping 96% of voters (:relieved:), with Wylan/Jesper next (90%) and Nina/Matthias just after (83%). None of the others really came close, despite Nina/Inej gathering 35% of the votes and Colm/Aditi at 25% (yeah, I’m not sure why that was so popular on AO3 either, but nobody really has objections so I assume that’s why it amassed so many votes). As Six of Crows is decidedly less divisive about ships and doesn’t have such controversial ships (more on that later), it seems the fandom agrees with canon pairings and the votes are... pretty unanimous.

Honourable Mentions:

Polycrows (platonic or romantic)

Kaz/Inej/Nina

Whoever didn’t read the instruction about this being for only the book series and put Jesper/Milo. I will never escape.

The Nikolai Series

This one is a little harder for me because I actually haven’t read this... so over to Fritz for analysis! But first, the stats. At 85%, the most popular ship is Genya/David, followed by Zoya/Nikolai at 77%. Tamar/Nadia and Nina/Hanne draw at 61.5% and Nina/Matthias has 56% voters onboard. There’s no real honourable mentions for this one, sadly. Hello Fritz here! Read the books and very glad to see Genya/David as the top ship as it damn well should. Although still a bit surprising since its more of a side-arc of the two and only ties in with the importance of the story at a specific chapter that I feel like I don’t need to elaborate about, if you read Rule of Wolves. (I believe the popularity of the ship also sky-rocketed due to ROW) Following of course Zoya/Nikolai, the high ranking makes sense, it is the main ship and lets be honest they deserve it <3

I think the only really surprising thing about this is the high votes for Nina/Matthias since [SPOILERS CROOKED KINGDOM] he’s dead so I feel like people should move on from that. Nina/“Hanne” having not as high a ranking as I would’ve thought, but with Matthias still being in the frame I guess we shouldn’t be surprised either.

Shadow and Bone: TV Series

This one is really interesting, with the exclusive show watchers now taking part! We have 89% voting for Kaz/Inej, 76% for David/Genya, 71% for Matthias/Nina, 67% for Ivan/Fedyor (that’s a thing???-->Yeah they had a few somewhat sweet interactions in the background-->nvm i watched it you’re right fritz) and 62% for Mal/Alina. What’s really surprising is how high Malina is compared to Darklina, with Darkling/Alina at 36%. Who knows, maybe Fritz�� analysis can shed some light on this?

Yes yes Fritz to the rescue: First of all we have to see their interactions a little different from what we already knew of them by the end of episode 8. I still think it is a surprising number, since the Darkling in the show isn’t as nasty as he was in the books BUT over all his actions are now seen on TV. We all thought the deer antlers were a necklace amirite? Well no apparently not, the darkling used the worst kind of small science to fit Alinas collarbone to the bone and out comes a gruesome sight: a reason why many people might have started thinking: Wow what a disgusting person he is. And on the Malina “ship”: Mal finally has personality!! jkjk :eyes: Mals and Alinas friendship has been portrayed way better in the show and I believe that the people noticed more chemistry between them especially by the end of season 1. So I’m still a little surprised Darklina has such a low ranking (what with him being all sweet and cuddly in the middle of the show) but it makes sense and the Malina ship as well. Their vibes are just *chefs kiss* and thats coming from someone who didnt even like any of these “ships” <3

Honourable Mentions:

Jesper and Milo (isn’t milo a goat? guys, why?)

Nadia/Marie (huh that didn’t appear anywhere else)

One person had several - Kaz/Inej/Jesper, Dubrov/Mikhael, Dubrov/Mikhael/Mal - and yeah, you can really see the show differences in these mentions right? (whose dubrov...and whose mikhael...)

16% actually voted for Inej/Alina which is wild to me because of book context (they did have chemistry in the show tho :cowboi_smirk:)

That’s a lot of honour and mentions but it’s so interesting to me and I think you should see too

Most Enjoyed Ships

The most enjoyed ship was Kaz/Inej. This had unparalleled support, being at 35%. Jesper/Wylan, which was next on the list (23.5%) and Nina/Matthias (18%) were also pretty popular. Most of the others were quite low, though interestingly Mal/Alina only had 1 vote (plus one for the show version). Overall, the SoC ships were a lot more popular in this section, which makes sense - this part is really about your favourite ship, and those were more unanimous in the last sections.

Least Enjoyed Ships

Most people said Darkling/Alina, which got 47% of the NOTP votes. A lot more people disliked Darkling/Alina than liked Kaz/Inej. Make of that what you will, but I take it as a somewhat general agreement among many of you guys. Mal/Alina was also strongly disliked at 22%, but around a half or more of these were clarified to be about the book version of the ship specifically. They really must’ve upgraded in the show! Jesper/Kuwei and any other Darkling ships were also voted by a few, but all of these pale in comparison to the anti-Darklina votes. Shoutout to the person who said Apparat/Anyone. I agree, though it’s not something I thought of before seeing this response. Also one person said they didn’t like the poly ships, which I hope meant just the ones mentioned earlier and not all poly relationships in general... Another shoutout to whoever said Kaz/Heleen, because why did I have to read that. A fun question, all in all!

Crack Ships and Shipping Discourse

I love talking about crack ships, so let’s start with that! This time, I really don’t want to have to count and list because... well, let me show you:

I think that sums up the sheer variety, to be honest. Then again, it would be rude not to mention that the most popular were Jesper/Milo, Darkling/Nikolai and Alina/Sun. (If you’re still confused about that last one, I take full responsibility.)

Now for the discourse. Yep, the part you probably came for.

Actually... maybe you didn’t? Looking at all of these responses, I see a lot of people genuinely don’t care about ship wars and so on, and often enjoyed the books regardless of the romances involved. Quite a few disapproved of the ongoing (though small) wars between Darklina and Malina, and others had a similar line of thinking, saying we should maybe stop focusing so much on it. You guys are right. I know this is a ship survey, and the conclusions should not include that shipping isn’t as important as we make it (Yes it should), but... that’s where it’s at.

And then again, a lot of you guys expressed disapproval for Darkling/Alina, discussing how it is often one-sided and manipulative and overall unhealthy, so I could be completely off with that last one. Some people mentioned that they ship this but as a slightly different version that the one given to us, recognising the flaws of the canon ship.

Someone said they headcanon Tolya as aroace (OMG YES!!). We need more aroace characters, so thank you for that headcanon :) We also have a few gay ships mentioned here, and one person telling us they love Malina. Yes, you’re right - it’s pretty unpopular, it turns out. Someone else said Alina should’ve been single, and I agree, actually!

Statistics Stuff:

The top ships were taken from AO3, so some ships may be more focused on in other books and may not provide accurate statistics for an earlier series.

The main circles this was sent around may have had bias as most people are from the same discord server, which has debated these topics in the past. Hence certain ships may have lower-than-average results. In future, this could be improved upon by sending this to other servers and areas of the fandom.

Personal bias may be present in the analysis, though I have tried to minimise this in the more formal sections.
