So one of the things people forget about Star Trek TOS is that things were very different in the 1960s--when this show came out, and I was a toddler and watched it with my dad.

The costume designer for Trek, William Ware Theiss, was one of those people who was brilliant at Getting Shit Past The Censors, which was much, much harder than it is today. There were all sorts of rules about what parts of an actress' body were allowed to be visible that do not exist today and did not exist at any time in which most of you reading this were involved with media fandom. This was the era in which bikini bottoms came up to your elbows because they wouldn't show a female navel on TV--if you look at most of the costumes on "hot" female characters, the navel was always covered, even if it meant having some truly odd fabric placement.

A good example would be the dress in the centre picture on the bottom row, from "For the World is Hollow And I Have Touched the Sky" which was also notable for letting Dr McCoy be the one who got the girl (and lost her, not because they hated women but because they couldn't afford to keep adding all Kirk et al's many gfs to the cast permanently lol). That is in fact Natira - the girl McCoy got.

And, while you could do cleavage all you wanted, the underside of the female breast was 100% a no-no.

Theiss took all these rules as a challenge and set out to create some of the sexiest outfits possible under the rules. In "Who Mourns for Adonais" there's a pink draped dress and the part that covers boobs is held up only by the weight of the train/cloak that's hanging over the character's shoulder. Oh, look, there it is in the centre pic out of the 9 smaller ones! Much more impressive than Bill Shatner's sparkly mini-toga.

Sadly, he died of AIDS in 1992 (and was probably queer) and it's sad to think about what Trek costuming might be like if Theiss had been allowed to go wild under relaxed censorship.

(Keep in mind, he did keep characters looking professional when that was what they were doing--the miniskirts look a bit OTT nowadays, but in 1966 it was a really big deal, and there were shorts under them, btw.)

Parenting Support (DP x DC)

Inspired by this post, but it ended up with a very different tone when I wrote it out. 🤷‍♀️

Jazz Fenton really thought her lifelong parentification would have prepared her a lot more for actual parenting. Turns out, a newborn and a preschool to teenage child were not at all similar, despite the newborn being the same boy she had already raised. Being barely 19, in a new dimension, and trying not to think about what she left behind, she was drowning.

She hadn’t slept in 38 hours when she discovered a flyer for the Single Parents Support Meetup. This group seemed to be in a less shady part of town, plus with Danny wailing in the middle of the coffee shop, she knew they couldn’t go on this way. Isolation would be the death of them both at this rate.

This turned out to save both of their lives over and over. Arty, Grace, Roxanne, Bruce, Joanna, and Alexis got her in ways others didn’t. She couldn’t hide from them that she hadn’t given birth to Danny, and she didn’t want to. Grace and Bruce both adopted and still needed help. It didn’t matter if she was raising her brother to them at all.

After the end of the meeting, Danny woke up in his stroller. When she didn’t respond before he started crying, she learned for the first time that he definitely had his ghost powers when he managed to levitate almost a foot before she could catch him. When her wide eyes looked around, only Bruce had seen, and he had quickly moved to use his large frame to hide what was happening from view.

“Be careful,” he said, with an unusually serious expression. The same man who lamented his little Dickie climbing the chandelier during a recent snow day with a goofy grin, seemed to almost be covered in shadows like he was a ghost himself. “It can be really unsafe for metahumans in Gotham. If you ever need help, here’s my number. For anything.”

For all it started with formal messages about safe daycares and where to buy phase-proof restraints for Danny’s carseat, their messages quickly devolved.

Bruce: okay but seriously how do I get Dick to stop swinging from the chandeliers? It was cute when he was like 10 feet up but the ballroom is at least 30 feet!! How did he get up there?

Jazz: I’m assuming same way Danny got into my bed last night from his crib. Being smacked awake by a 6 month old at 2am is terrifying.

Bruce: fair enough. Alfred made Danny’s favorite sweet potatoes. Want to come over for a few hours and take a nap?

Jazz: you are a lifesaver. Be over in 30. Also, if you really don’t want him on the chandeliers, get him something up high that wobbles and swings. He’s probably seeking the stimuli he’s missing from the circus. He might still act out, but it probably won’t be as much if the other thing is more fun.

How do some people not see OJ as self-centered. Every action that man does is based on it.

OJ says himself that he likes fixing problems. He is never purposefully malicious but he tends to fixate on what he thinks is right, even when he is constantly proven to be wrong.

Bomb won't sacrifice the win, even though "I'm smarter?" well it's his fault, he should have listened to me I'm now leaving the alliance because of it. Suitcase won't eliminate herself? She's "ruining the show!" because she's messing with my plan. The Thinkers don't have good leadership? "All you had to do was listen to me!".

It's always HIM first. Always his hotel first. Always someone else's fault.

It's an incredibly interesting flaw because it goes against how he presents himself! OJ wants to be seen as a caretaker, he wants to be the person to save the day for others. That big winner. He speaks with confidence, he's loud and showy- AND IF YOU THINK HE'S GENUINELY SOME FLAWLESS SELFLESSLY KIND GUY YOU ARE FALLING FOR IT!!!

I don’t think he can handle a lot of jealousy. 

I see a lot of headcanons about him being this possessive, jealous, overprotective guy, but that’s… really not how I see it at all?

The only reason he threatens Frisk in game (from my interpretation at least) is because they’re a very real threat, but he’s never shown to be hostile in any other situation. Everyone likes him because he’s so easygoing and charming, I can’t imagine him having any sort of jealousy issues. Like, genuinely not at all. I don’t think he ever gets jealous himself tbh unless he’s having a really really crappy day and you’re giving all your attention to other people, but even then it’s not in the “grrr you’re mine” type of way it’s in the mopey kinda sad type of way. I think he’d get super freaked if his partner had those types of issues. 

Like, a little bit is fine. It’s endearing when you cling to him and when you pout and try to get his attention. It can even be a little charming if you get a little huffy with the person making you jealous. He just draws the line at real anger. If you get legitimately upset about him talking to someone else then he really will not appreciate that. 

Willing to communicate with you about it if your jealousy revolves around only one specific person, can slightly compromise by putting a little distance between himself and that person (unless it’s someone he’s super super close to since before he even met you), but he’s not gonna accept unreasonable jealousy and anything he deems as controlling

He tuts at you and scolds you when he notices you sending other people dirty looks for getting too close to him, but he isn’t necessarily cruel about it. He assures you that it is, of course, perfectly normal to be afraid to lose something as perfect and great as him !! But you don’t need to be because he loves you. And also, frankly, you need to get a grasp on yourself !! It is not very great to get angry about these kinds of things. Now, learning to control yourself, that is truly… beyond great !!!!!! 

Works on it with you, without ever entertaining your jealousy problems. Type of guy to legitimately change you for the better forever I'm so serious

Will, however, with a very heavy heart break up if there’s no end in sight at all. If you don’t even try to improve, and your jealousy creates actual anger in you, then you are unfortunately a danger to his friends and family and he can’t keep you around. But it probably won’t ever come to that.

Can handle surprisingly much, actually

You’d think a stern guy like him, who always insists you must retain a large level of independence from him even in a relationship, would hate it. And while, yeah, he doesn’t like it… he also really doesn’t hate it either. 

He’ll sternly tell you off if he thinks it goes too far (for example if you snark at the person you deem as haven gotten too close; he can defend his own honour perfectly well on his own, thank you very much), he’ll put up with more than you’d think.

Mostly rolls his eyes at your behaviour, calling it juvenile. He doesn’t mind it too much though. You would know if it really bothered him. He is not the type to let behaviour he doesn’t like just slip without a serious talking to with real consequences. Certainly not above demanding more space should he find that the both of you need the distance. You know he’s fine with it as long as it goes out on no one but him and in non violent/hostile manners. Sometimes he even grins, finding it a little bit charming.

Unless you have, like… SERIOUS serious jealousy issues, it won’t be a dealbreaker for him.

He even finds it nice. He actively enjoys it. He WANTS you to be jealous. It feels validating to him that you want him so much you’re willing to fight on his behalf just to keep him. 

Only times he’ll mind it is if it goes out over the people he genuinely cares about. Will get super uncomfortable if you try to control what friends he sees, but will do as you ask because he’s afraid to lose you. This goes past jealousy to controlling and possessive, I know, but I’m trying to paint the picture of how bad it is. 😭 His self esteem is actually so awful, he’ll take whatever he’s given. If you’re not careful, he does become codependent on you. It’s no surprise then that he’s willing to accept unacceptable behaviour. 

Mal, however, will notice if it gets to a point and steps in. If your jealousy issues cause you to become controlling, the relationship will end. 

But, if we’re talking about how much he SHOULD handle, not how much he’ll allow himself to handle, I think it’s for the best his partner isn’t very jealous at all. Sometimes a little jealousy is obviously fine, that’s normal and human, but I don’t think it’s good for him to have a partner who will get too clingy or mopey, and definitely not mad at him, if they feel he isn’t with them all the time. Like I mentioned before, he has codependency issues; I think a partner who gets jealous might unintentionally feed into it. His partner needs to be able to encourage him to hang out with other people and handle him having friends if things are to work out well.

Some thoughts about the mouthwashing fandom and some character analysis(?) under the cut.

While the game is clearly meant for older audiences (14+ at least, from my understanding, although I couldn't find an official age rating), the fandom is flooded by kids and teens too young to even play the game or understand the characters and actions they take.

The game deals with some very upsetting themes. From murder and suicide to self harm and sexual assault (some more prominent than others). While it's totally fine if someone feels uncomfortable with any of these themes, that doesn't erase them from the game and shouldn't discourage people from showing them in the fandom. If it's truly that upsetting to someone I would recommend they go into some other fandom (at least where the source material is not as triggering to them). We are here to have a good time, not a stressful one.

The fandom is this twisted 'happy/nothing bad happens' and everyone is turning a blind eye to how disturbing and disgusting the game was.

Don't get me started on the treatment Jimmy goes through. Yes, he is a terrible person for what he does in game but 1: he was clearly mentally unwell* (I'll add to that later), especially after a point and 2: 'fandom Jimmy' literally did nothing wrong (unlike cannon Jimmy), his depictions in the fandom is him being brutally murdered or just existing.

*It's not only implied in game that he's mentally unwell, we literally see him descent into madness by the end. From the beginning (him refusing to cooperate for the phyc evaluations), to the breakdown he was having after he navigated the ship to crash into a meteorite, to him having hallucinations (the graveyard, the cake scene with everyone gathered etc).

Also Curly, damn. I get it that he enabled Jimmy's actions to a degree but are we forgetting Swansea also stood there and did nothing? He said Anya was telling him 'all sorts of things' (implying the SA from Jimmy) yet he still did literally nothing, not even attempt to talk to him. Curlys worst sin was him being a realistic and complex character. Having a personal crisis about his own future and fulfilment in life, trying to navigate the whole 'pony express is closing' with an unhappy crew, having to help Anya who was having basically a breakdown and was on a high risk of hurting herself with the gun, having to confront Jimmy about the whole affair (it was implied that he didn't know from the beginning that the pregnancy was not only unwanted but also forced), trying to help an old friend. It all piles up. He could have handled things better, sure, but to pretend he is equally as bad as Jimmy is just wrong and shows the lack of judgment, understanding and overall empathy of realistic characters and situations.

Neither Curly nor Swansea did anything drastic because there was nothing they could do. Curly was trying to help everyone in his way, too blinded by their friendship to acknowledge or predict what Jimmy was capable of before it was too late.

Personally I think mouthwashing is an excellent game, definitely one of the best I've ever played. The story, the way the events take place, the characters, the imagery, the music. The way it successfully builds up the uneasy atmosphere without any jumpscares, embracing the 'psychological horror' element to it's fullest. Truly a great game, I just wish the fandom was a little more 'mature' (mentally wise).
