Tara Carpenter x female Reader (Request)
Masterlist / Side story / Smut for this story
@alexkolax here you go, sorry I left his for last, I had a blast writing it! Not sure if this completely fits the frenemies to lovers you requested, but I think it turned out fine. Thanks for the wonderful request! 😁😁💙💙
Word count: 4.8k
“No, you hear me! Quit picking apart every single thing you watch!” there they go again…
Sam groaned, burying her head in the pillow as she got front seat experience to yet another argument between Tara and you.
“I’m not! I just can’t turn my brain off!” you exclaimed and reluctantly Sam opened her eyes. There you and Tara were, arguing while the twins and Anika laughed their asses off, because of course they would.
“It’s a horror comedy!” Tara argued back, and by this point someone just needed to nudge either of you and you’d just kiss. But no one was doing that, because, according to Mindy, the professional expert, the two of you would just act disgusted and avoid each other. Meaning it probably happened before.
Although, according to Anika, the two of you were already together. Because, well, Tara brought you into the group. She vouched for you, granted behind your back, but still, she, apparently, hated your guts, yet she was the one who dragged you, literally, into the friend group.
Sam still remembered your valiant efforts to get free from Tara’s grip, yelling ‘Unhand me, Carpenter!’ as loud as it was socially acceptable in a park, while Tara grumbled something along the lines. ‘Trust me, I would, but someone insisted on meeting you!’ to this day they had no idea who insisted on meeting you. Because none of them did! Yet Tara claimed Chad did when he was drunk and that… wasn’t impossible, but it was a bit of a stretch.
At this point Sam was very temped to do it, just shove Tara into your arms. You’d either get together or stop talking to each other for a few days and as far as Sam was concerned either option was a win.
Wait… If you got together, you’d be here more often. You’d argue with Tara even more.
No. No! You would absolutely not get together!
Sam would not allow it!
“It’s too ridiculous to be considered a comedy! The woman’s head gets pulled off her body!” you shouted, arguing about whatever happened in the movie.
“Y/N…” Tara’s eye twitched, but she didn’t need her inhaler, so Sam was at least at peace with that. It really was you and Tara being plain and simple childish.
“And that dance montage? Get that out of here!” you complained and for a moment Sam could have sworn your and Tara’s hands touched, just for a moment.
Tara threw her hands up, so Sam must have been seeing things. “The actors were underage, what did you want?!”
“Not even implications, thank you very much!” well, Sam could see some reason in that argument.
Mindy apparently had enough and snapped her fingers getting your and Tara’s attention, though it was clear both of you were reluctant to give it to her. “Come on, at least agree that the actress is pretty,” she said, and the actress really was beautiful, so hopefully you and Tara could find common ground there. Instead of bickering about that as well.
“Never. She looks like Tara,” you immediately shut the idea of agreeing on anything down.
“Excuse me, what?” Tara demanded. “And what is that supposed to mean?”
You turned back to Tara and slowly smirked. “Oh, you know exactly what it means,” a moment later Tara was storming into her room, her face red with anger, and you as satisfied as you were just sat back down and sipped on your drink.
At least it was clear you and Tara weren’t getting together anytime soon, so Sam could relax.
There was one time she saw this happen and she began threatening you, only for Tara to come out, yelling that she would deal with you and that Sam shouldn’t get involved. Sam sighed back then, accepting that somehow Tara just liked having her buttons pushed by you, and pushing your buttons in return. It was a strange frenemy situation you and Tara were in, but Sam begrudgingly learnt to accept it.
~X~
Jerk, that’s what you were. Of course she knew exactly what you meant, and you were a jerk for that, making her flustered. She was lying on her bed, looking at the ceiling, still blushing, though not as much as when she came into her room. You were still as annoying as you were the first time you met.
She met you in a literature class, and she was the only one taking it so she couldn’t sit next to Mindy, Chad, or Anika. And by pure, dumb, luck, she sat down next to you, and she regretted it immediately as she could smell the cigarette smoke on your clothes and she couldn’t move away since the seats were taken, and well, plenty of students smoked so she kinda learnt to deal with it. Especially while she was going to parties where cigarettes were the least of her problems. As far as her asthma went.
It still irritated her lungs.
“Hey, I’m Y/N L/N,” you introduced yourself and she was weary, of course she was, she was targeted by Ghostface twice. It was a miracle no one she loved was killed the last time, though both Anika and Gale just barely survived.
So, when you immediately introduced yourself she was suspicious, even though she was the one who sat down next to you. It was just her paranoia. “Tara Carpenter, it’s nice to meet you,” she still accepted your hand because she still, despite being paranoid, wished to live a relatively normal life.
And that’s how you met, you didn’t give off psycho vibes, granted neither did Ethan and Quinn, and she didn’t even want to think about Amber. But she felt strangely comfortable, despite the scent of cigarette smoke.
“You okay?” you noticed her discomfort, a lot faster than most people would.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t worry about it. Just my asthma,” she smiled lightly, she didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, but she didn’t feel like lying.
Your eyes widened and you cursed under your breath, understanding what she meant. And you pulled your chair further away from her. “Shit, I’m sorry. I would switch, but,” you sheepishly rubbed the back of your head. “The only people I know in this class smoke a lot more than I do,” you did get up to open the window a few feet away from you as Tara looked at you, honestly not sure if she should get suspicious or if she should find your actions endearing. “Does this help?”
Tara nodded, it did help a bit. “Thanks, I appreciate it.”
She had no idea it wouldn’t even take half an hour for your first argument to happen… And it began so nicely.
~X~
You were grinning like a fool in the Carpenter sister’s apartment, doing your best to ignore Sam’s exasperated look and Anika’s suspicious glances. You’ve come a long way since you met the group nine months ago. They initially glared daggers at you, Sam especially, when you and Tara argued in front of them the first time. Well, argued wasn’t exactly the right word, more like a very heated disagreement on a minor detail in the movie you just watched. Now they just accepted it as normal between the two of you and learnt to ignore or find amusement in it.
You barely even remembered what the book you started arguing about was, but you remembered very clearly what the argument was. And you felt sorry for it right now, as you didn’t know how close to home you were hitting.
“It’s a debate, on whether or not people deserve a second chance,” Tara answered the question the teacher asked.
“Correct, thank you. And what would you say, Miss-“ the man paused, having yet to learn all your names.
“Carpenter, sir. I say it depends on what is done and if there is an excuse and effort to fix things,” she said, convinced of her belief.
She sat down as you watched her, you agreed with her, though in your experience people rarely put enough effort to fix things. Still, you wanted to see how strong her conviction was.
“Does anyone have a different opinion?” the teacher asked and you raised your hand. “Yes?”
“I disagree entirely. It doesn’t depend, there’s no going back after broken trust, there will always be cracks, fears, doubts,” you argued and saw Tara raising an eyebrow as you focused almost entirely on her. “And people rarely put enough effort to make it up to the one they hurt.”
Tara bit the corner of her lip, and you’d later find out it was a habit when she was getting a bit anxious. Since you found out you made sure to never bring her to that point. Well, nowadays your arguments were mostly silly. “It’s not just one person that needs to make an effort. Both need to do their part if they want to rebuild their relationship,” she countered, briefly apologizing to the teacher for speaking out of turn, but the man just gave the two of you a go ahead.
“People who hurt you, truly hurt you, leaving deep scars, emotional or of any other kind, either don’t love you, or have no control over themselves, and it takes a lot of effort to fix the second one,” rare few were strong and mature enough to fix that, to gain control, and not do it again, and even fewer did it while accepting that the one they hurt didn’t owe them a second chance.
“You can’t know what they went through, some people need help to do that,” Tara argued and you didn’t realize until later that day that she wasn’t just talking about some belief she had, that she actually went through that.
“Exactly, because I didn’t do it to them. And I refuse to pay for the damage someone else did,” you countered and the argument continued, going back and forth, without either of you being necessarily wrong or right, it really depended on the point of view. You just had the tendency to be a lot more direct and confident in your arguments, making them sound stronger than they perhaps truly were. Tara was more willing to meet in the middle, to avoid direct confrontation, and it made her a much more pleasant discussion partner.
~X~
Tara scrolled through her photos, through a secret album that required a password, just in case anyone got really curious. The photos were completely innocent, but it was the person she was with that made them a secret. And she grinned, looking at the two of you laughing, your arm around her as you hugged her from behind and she took the picture.
You loved going on her nerves, but you had your moments, rare moments where you were just completely soft with her. She had literature class twice a week, and two weeks in she was a hundred percent sure you were a menace she would gladly kick out of the class, just so she never had to look at your face and smug smile and rare, soft smile, ever again.
She noticed it in the second week, but she wrote it off as an accident. But the scent of cigarette smoke was weaker than the first week. You probably didn’t get a chance to smoke before class. And then the second week she realized she couldn’t smell cigarette smoke on you at all. She was breathing perfectly fine, nothing in her vicinity irritated her lungs, but she didn’t say anything. Surely you didn’t quit cigarettes for her.
Any idea that you did that went crashing down through the closed window on the third floor their classroom was on and landed on the harsh concrete with multiple deep lacerations from the glass. Because five minutes later you were arguing about the book that was assigned to read. Even the teacher was getting a bit annoyed by the two of you at this point. But he encouraged healthy debates, and you and Tara were, technically, still having just a debate.
The week after that, when she once more didn’t smell the familiar irritating scent she just had to ask. “Did you quit smoking?” it was rare for the two of you to have a civil conversation that probably couldn’t start an argument, but maybe this would end like that.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah. Figured it was healthier, and I really don’t want to trigger your asthma, so two birds with one stone, I guess,” you sounded confident, but you still looked away, proving to her that you could, after all, get a bit shy.
“Oh,” Tara, however, was blushing, the heat in her cheeks was damn near unbearable, because even Sam still smoked occasionally. “Thanks,” she pushed her chair a bit closer to you and pulled her things out of her bag.
“Don’t mention it,” you said softly. And then, as if your softer, gentles, kinder, side ran out of battery, you went right back to how things were the past couple of weeks. “Your essay is nonsense; I don’t agree with one thing you wrote.”
Curse the teacher for making you give each other your assignments to read and debate on! “Yours was complete bullshit, I swear you just typed words until you reached the necessary length,” she fired back, both of you already slightly grinning.
~X~
Tara was easily the best person you could have ended up sitting next to for your literature class, though you would never, absolutely never, say that to her face. The only issue was that you absolutely could not go one class without bickering.
You had a long night at work and were actually quite sleepy during the lesson one time, about a month into the semester, and you were catching every other word at best. Your notes weren’t making any sense, and you even had no energy to argue with Tara. So, maybe, just maybe, the day would end without arguing.
“Here,” Tara sighed, pushing her notebook closer to you near the end of the class and you raised an eyebrow. “Just copy my notes,” she told you.
You smiled, leaning closer to her and if anyone said your shoulders were touching they were being a huge liar. The biggest of them all, because there was absolutely no contact between you and Tara Carpenter.
None whatsoever.
“Tara,” you whispered and looked at her, completely serious. “Your handwriting is awful,” you told her, and you swore you saw a vein pop up on her forehead.
“Thats what I get for trying to help you,” she shook her head in disbelief, though she didn’t take her notebook back.
~X~
You and Tara rarely hung out outside of classes before she introduced you to her friends. But there was one time, when all her friends went back to their parents and Sam was working a night shift, so, Tara went to your apartment, dragged you out of your comfy bed, she actually did that. Well, she tried, she was strong given her size, but she wasn’t that strong.
You still remembered the terror you felt. You opened your doors to Tara, woken up about an hour after you fell asleep and let her in. You didn’t even argue, you just closed the doors behind her and went right to your bed and fell back onto it as she rambled about some party or whatever. Something about Sam not letting her go to a party alone, and you were her only option. How was she even going to explain to Sam that she wasn’t going alone? Sam had no idea you even existed!
Okay, maybe she did know you existed if Tara complained about you, but that definitely didn’t make you a fitting candidate to keep Tara company at a party. You were just about to fall back asleep, Tara being in your apartment didn’t bother you one bit, she’d get bored and leave. But then she began pulling your hand to get up.
“Don’t wanna,” you mumbled sleepily, and surprisingly she let go.
Which was very concerning.
You opened one eye and saw Tara taking several steps back with a very mischievous grin on her face and then charging forward. “Tara!” you cried out, fully awake and jumping to your feet as she landed on your bed, elbow right where your guts was, though you doubted that part was intentional.
Your bed miraculously survived the Tara bomb.
Tara laughed as she rolled to the side, lying her head on your pillow and an annoying part of your brain found the image in front of you rather appealing. “You should have seen the look on your face!” she exclaimed, holding her stomach while laughing.
You smirked, ready for verbal payback. “And you are really eager to ride me,” her laughter stopped, her face turned red and you, satisfied with your work, grabbed some clothes and went to the bathroom to change.
Luckily, you didn’t get too drunk that night and by the morning Sam had no idea Tara spent the night anywhere but in her bed. Though she, truthfully, crashed at your place for the night. You, of course, took the couch. And just thinking about sleeping on the couch made you frown. As that was what you’ve been doing for the past two weeks and your body was starting to get stiff, because that thing was not meant to be used for sleeping for extended periods of time.
You couldn’t say you regretted it though. You just couldn’t wait to get a new bed.
~X~
If there was one thing Tara learnt to appreciate about you, it was how predictable you were with her. Come hell or high water she could count on you to argue with her just because you found it fun to debate about things. And as months passed you went from annoying classmate always playing a devil’s advocate and arguing with her on everything, to an actually pleasant company. Most of the times. Sometimes.
She felt like she could trust you. She felt like she could fall for you and not regret it.0
What she didn’t expect was genuine compassion from you. And it happened so abruptly, so out of nowhere, she couldn’t even see it coming.
The two of you met at the front doors as you usually did for the few weeks prior to that day. And the floors were wet, just recently cleaned, but she was so out of it since she was accidentally reminded of Amber that she didn’t notice and she slipped, falling backwards. She wasn’t sure if she released any sounds, but the next moment you were behind her, holding her firmly, one of your hands on her side, the other around her shoulders, with the back of her head leaning on your chest. You were holding her, making sure you’d take the worst of the fall if you still went down, if you didn’t manage to stand firmly enough on the slippery floor.
“I got you,” you told her, clearly concerned, and Tara just leaned against you, barely supporting her weight.
“Can I trust you?” she asked, almost out of breath.
You nodded, your eyes filled with conviction. You weren’t messing around, you weren’t going to argue, you were there, one hundred percent. “I’m here for you, anytime,” you assured her and she grabbed onto your hand, still on her side, accidentally covering one of her stab wounds, and Tara, surprisingly felt completely safe, protected.
“Skip class with me?” she asked and you nodded, helping her regain her balance and the class was soon forgotten. She took you to your place, since Sam was still at home and your place was closer anyway.
You didn’t say one word, but you remained close to her, your hands brushing against one another as you walked and when you went into your apartment you sat down right next to her. Your presence was comforting, though at this point she wasn’t surprised by that.
Tara took a deep breath, preparing herself for what she wanted to do. She wanted to let you in, to fully trust you, to introduce you to her friends and Sam. “Do you know what happened in Woodsboro?” she began and your eyes widened, and that was all she needed to know as she began talking. She poured it all out, Sam, Amber, deaths of her dear friends, the betrayal, coming to New York, and what happened with Richie’s family, she told you everything. Every single feeling she had, things she found difficult to talk about with her therapist, or even with Sam, it just all burst out, like whatever contained those feelings suddenly burst and cracked, letting it all out.
And you remained silent, though you hugged her, tight and gentle at the same time. And it felt so good she climbed onto your lap, clutching at the back of your shirt, clinging to you as hard as she could. You didn’t complain, you just wrapped your arms around her, pulling her closer, your hands trembling slightly in barely concealed anger. Hearing you gritting your teeth, feeling your fingers twitching, and your body just barely relaxing when her warmth and weight, and voice right in your ear would remind you that she was, in fact, still here, it all felt good to her.
It felt like she was, at least a tiny bit, being released from the horrors she went through.
Though she still didn’t introduce you to others, it took nearly four months for that to happen, and by then, well, a lot of things happened.
~X~
You figured enough time passed that you could move away from your spot and leave the conversation you were having with Chad. “Sorry, I’ll be right back,” you purposely pointed toward the bathroom and hopped to your feet. You went into the hall, and making sure no one was behind you, just went the opposite way and snuck into Tara’s room.
She turned on her bed and smiled, reaching out for you as you knelt on her bed and kissed her soft lips. Damn, you wished you could do this freely, just kiss her whenever you wanted, but you understood her friends might not be ready to accept you as Tara’s girlfriend, and not just classmate she loved bickering with. You licked her lips, just lightly teasing her as she hugged you, her fingers already gently massaging the back of your head.
“I can’t believe the bickering is still working,” you muttered between the kisses. Sure, you and Tara still enjoyed an occasional debate here and there, but you stopped bickering almost a year ago! And the bickering still worked on her friends! And you’ve been sneaking behind their back, sneaking in kisses all over Tara’s apartment. In the kitchen, bathroom if you were really desperate, or the hall if you were feeling rather bold, but for the most part it was in her room, just like this. Tara would storm into her room, you’d wait, and go after her, sneaking a quick make-out session in before you’d come back from wherever you were.
Things were a bit different this time around, as Tara kissed you harder than before, pushing you until your positions were switched and she was straddling you. She grabbed onto your collar, pushing it to the side so she could kiss the spot where your neck and shoulder met, and, though a bit risky, she decided to leave a mark, biting the spot and sucking as you grabbed onto her hips to steady yourself.
“Tara,” you sat up, you both knew you didn’t have much time. “We shouldn’t risk it,” you told her, but you still pulled her in for another kiss, your tongues meeting as her hands gripped your shoulders.
“Just a bit more, I miss this,” she admitted, and you missed it too, and it was worth getting caught to you, but you weren’t completely sure it was worth it to Tara.
In the end, you just said screw it and kissed along her jaw, gradually going lower until your lips met her neck.
“Remember how flustered you got when I kissed you for the first time?” Tara asked out of blue, sighing and holding your head close to her neck. Well, maybe it wasn’t completely out of blue, next week would be a year since you got together.
“You were so damn smug about it,” you grumbled, though you still kissed the side of Tara’s neck, paying extra attention to the more sensitive spots, while, much to your annoyance, making sure you didn’t leave marks anywhere visible.
“Mhm, you deserve it for making me work for it,” she grinned, her hold on you growing stronger as she bit her lip to stop herself from moaning.
You pulled back and looked her in the eyes and then at her lips, inviting, beautiful. She was absolutely the most beautiful woman you ever saw, so no, Tara wasn’t pretty. She was much, much more than that. And you kissed her, pouring all of your passion and love for her into the kiss, deepening it as Tara moaned. The feeling of her body pressed against you made you wish you could just stop hiding from her friends and Sam.
And then four very loud gasps, followed by yelps and doors slamming against the wall and then bodies stumbling onto the floor on a pile of limbs and everything else, with poor Chad underneath the three women broke you and Tara apart.
“Y-You two are-“ Mindy stuttered, and you had to admit you enjoyed the professional expert being surprised.
“Together? Yes,” you shrugged, the cat was out of the bag, and you couldn’t exactly say you were arguing telepathically and needed to have your tongue deep inside Tara’s mouth to do so.
The four of them scrambled to their feet and just looked at you and Tara like nothing ever surprised them as much as this.
Eventually, Anika got over her surprise and offered an open palm to Mindy and Chad. “Pay up, I guessed it right,” Anika demanded from them.
The twins groaned and you and Tara watched incredulously as they each pulled out twenty bucks and gave them to Anika. But nothing, not twins and Anika betting on whether you and Tara were together, not their surprised faces, not your secret being revealed, nothing. Absolutely nothing compared to Sam’s expression. She looked like someone completely shattered her brain.
“Sam?” Tara tried calling her sister, just to snap her out of the stupor.
“You two… for how long?” Sam managed to utter.
“Uh, before you guys even met me,” you admitted sheepishly, and nudged Tara to get off your lap, but she was comfortable and very few things could get Tara off your lap, especially now that you two got caught.
Not that you minded, you loved when she was on your lap, but her sister might get a heart attack if this continues, and you didn’t want Sam to die.
Sam nodded, she nodded several times, humming to herself before she just walked out of Tara’s room. “She’ll get used to it,” Tara shrugged as Sam gave you two a thumbs up.
Sam took a deep, rather audible breath and came back, pointing right at you. “Don’t break Tara’s heart,” she warned with her best glare, which was actually intimidating.
“Yeah, don’t worry about that,” Tara reassured her before you could answer, and frankly, you loved how quickly she said that. “We kinda broke her bed back at her place, so… not saying that won’t happen ever again,” she chuckled sheepishly as your eyes widened and you all turned to Tara. Well, you did break the bed, but she did not need to tell them that.
Sam opened her mouth, but then closed it as Tara shrugged, acting like she was completely innocent in that case of property damage.
“I think we might have broken Sam,” Tara told you, clearly surprised that that was even a possibility, and she glanced at the rest of your friends and then gestured at the doors.
“Right! Got it!” they scampered outside as you and Tara chuckled, and just like that you were alone once more.
“I love you, you know,” you said as you kissed her cheek and she just grinned.
“I know,” she smirked, barely holding her laughter back as you rolled your eyes.
“Oh, come the fuck on!” you groaned, dropping down onto the bed and pulling Tara on top of you.
Tara laughed like she just heard the best joke ever. Well, she did love teasing you. “I love you too,” she said as her laughter subsided and she kissed you on the lips.

Now That I've Binged All of Mid-Century Modern ...
... here are just a few of my thoughts on the show.
Warning: Below, be spoilers! If you haven't finished the 10-episode season, please keep scrolling by. If you have watched all of it, then by all means, feel free to agree or argue with me in the comments.
Tumblr media
Now on to my blatherings:
Here on Tumblr, we need an acronym or abbreviation for this series to use as a tag. Because if we put it under the #midcenturymodern or the #mid-centurymodern tag, we'll have to weed through all the posts about interior decor and Googie architecture. Not that I don't love Googie architecture. Might I suggest #midcmod. Although, I guess we can also use #desertqueens. I'm open to recommendations.
I love how quickly the actors on the series seemed to find their characters. Most new series take at least 3 or 4 episodes before the actors get comfortable in their characters and truly feel like they know who that person is (you can tell because it often shows in their performances). But with this cast, they pretty much found it after the 1st episode. Kudos!
God, I'm going to miss Linda Lavin. 😔 She was such a great balance to the cast. Not just in the form of estrogen or age, but in the form of perspective. Like in ep. 6 ("Maid Serviced"), where she checked the guys about hiring a housekeeper for his looks and not for his ability to do the job, I appreciated it when she said something to the effect: "At my age, you have to fight to be seen. And I'm not going to fight to be seen in my own house." Respect. You go, Mama!
At first, I wasn't really feeling Pamela Adlon as Nathan Lane's sister, Mindy, because I thought she was too young to play his sis. But it turns out she's only about 10 yrs younger, so it's not that weird at all. Plus, the more we saw them together, the more I liked them as a duo. Especially when he put her in a headlock in ep. 8 ("Sour Pickleball"). 😏
I saw some people here on Tumblr bristle at the portrayal of Jerry (played by Matt Bomer) as the dumb, handsome one. But I kind of love this for him. Bomer is usually pretty serious or sarcastic in most of the roles he's known for, so seeing him kind of play against type is a bit refreshing. And it's clear that his "stupidity" comes more so from being sheltered in his Mormon/ultra-conservative upbringing than from simply being not very bright. I say let him cook.
My favorite episode of the 10 so far was the one where they go to Fire Island. I think it's ep. 5 ("Hello, Fisty's"). I appreciated how that episode subverted our expectations. Instead of the guys enjoying an evening of sensual debauchery, they got to share a part of themselves that reflected the person underneath the façade. A sexual interaction was replaced with a heartfelt one. 🫂
I know it shouldn't have been as funny as it was, but when Mindy made Jerry cry at pickleball in ep. 8, I literally laughed out loud. I don't know what it was -- it could've been how Bomer chose to play the scene -- but that moment was absolutely hilarious. Again, I can see how this role is allowing us to see Bomer's skill at comedy a lot better than anything we've seen him do in the past.
Speaking of comedy, call me a filthy foul-mouthed radical, but I appreciate how the show doesn't tiptoe around swearing or sexual interactions. I'm sure some folks at home will be clutching their pearls when they hear the first f-bomb dropped on the series. And don't get me started when they openly brought up pegging like it was nothing. But I like that it's a series clearly intended for mature audiences in every sense of the word. In that respect, it reminds a little of Grace and Frankie.
I hope if we get more seasons where we get to see more guest stars that we know the cast has worked with in the past. I loved seeing Judd Hirsch, Rhea Perlman, Richard Kind, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the show. If they get another season, I can only imagine how many people will jump at the chance to guest star.
I pretty much knew I would like this series when I saw that James Burrows was an executive producer and director on the show. I don't think I've ever watched a TV series with his name attached where I didn't like it.
With that said, the one running theme/joke that I'm not a fan of is the mini-dance breaks the guys do every now and then. It was kind of cute in the pilot episode, but every time after that, I would kind of watch through my fingers. 🫣 Now, I don't have anything against characters dancing in TV shows or film, but far too often ... well ... they just aren't very good and I often wish they wouldn't. I know that seems bitchy, because everyone should be allowed to dance if they feel like it. And it's totally realistic that this group would dance around their own home if the spirit moves them. But ... they really aren't very good and I find myself desperately wanting them to be better so I don't have to cover my eyes. All of them have lovely singing voices. And of course, they're fantastic actors. But as dancers ... um, yeah 😬. Well, they're certainly dispelling the stereotype that all gay men can dance.
So now that I've nitpicked about the one thing I don't like about the show, let me share my thoughts on ep. 9. ("Here's to You, Mrs. Schneiderman"). I was really shocked that the writers included Lavin's death in the show in the first season. I'm sure they probably had to, but instead of just easing into it, they really faced it head on and I respect that a lot. And can we give it up to Nathan Lane for his performance in that episode? 👏🏽 He was genuinely heartbreaking to watch and he played every beat so brilliantly. I knew Lavin passed before the show could air, but I just assumed that she died after they had finished filming, and they were likely going to address it if they got a second season. So the shock that hit me when they dedicated an entire episode to her in the first season was 🤯. It was so wonderfully written and genuinely moving that it just made me adore the show even more. Certainly this episode is more sad and sentimental than the other episodes, but it was not without the right dose of humor at just the perfect moments to make it match the tone of the series. God, I'm going to miss her. 😔
Final thoughts:
Even though it's just a 30-min sitcom, I can't reiterate how much I think the show gave us the laugh so many of us need right now with everything else going on in the world. I know some folks feel like the world has stopped or should be stopping and every day should be about focusing on fighting the power and death to tyranny and all that.
But I know my anxiety and overall psyche appreciates a break from the constant fear of dread, doom, and despair that permeates my thoughts every day. A laugh, a harmless distraction, a moment to remind us of our collective humanity is very much appreciated right now -- at least by me.
Also, I can't speak for anyone else, but I like sitcoms that deliver laughs while also delivering a reflection of our flaws, quirks, and humanity back at us. And by the time you reach the 5th episode, I think the writers had clearly found that sweet spot where comedy, pathos and heart intersect. And I couldn't be more grateful. 🫶🏽

Meghan and Mindy Kaling’s dynamic is just so odd. Like, why can’t Mindy believe Meghan eats fastfood? It’s not like Meghan was born a royal. Why did she feel that receiving Meghan’s jam was the most glamorous moment of her life? It’s just so odd. Mindy is supposed to be a talented writer, like why is she acting dumb? Part of me thinks she’s just enamored with royalty, but why is she acting like she doesn’t know Meghan’s background? Marrying Harry didn’t retroactively change Meghan’s life before the marriage.
Also, I just don’t understand why Meghan doesn’t use this Mindy Kaling connection in ways other than making her act like the Gretchen Wieners to her Regina George. Meghan has Archewell Productions. At one point they were trying to get into film and tv productions. She should be taking advantage of having a friend who has written successful shows for TV. Although judging from their interactions, them collaborating in any way is probably a disaster waiting to happen, so I guess that’s why.
Mindy is more than a writer, you know. She’s an actress too. Perhaps she’s acting the way Meghan instructed her too…as actors do.
My personal theory is they’re not really friends and don’t hang out the way Meghan’s PR says they do. A lot of people have pointed out that there’s a lack of chemistry between the two women in their scenes together for Netflix and usually when people are good friends like the PR claimed, there’s at least some chemistry.
So if they were seriously friends and hung out like they’ve been claiming, then Meghan wouldn’t be so insulting about Mindy’s occasional Hindi accent. It’s something Meghan would’ve already known about, because she’d have heard it so much already, instead of being so bamboozled by it. (Again, I haven’t seen the show. This is some criticism I read.)
Also, while Mindy is definitely a pop culture consumer, she’s also very busy. She’s a legit producer, has actual talent, and not to mention she’s single-mom-parenting 3 kids. She doesn’t have a whole lot of time to herself anymore to indulge in pop culture shenanigans like she may have used to.
(Completely unrelated, but I think BJ Novak is the baby daddy. If he’s not the bio baby daddy, then he’s at least a father figure-type to the kids because their relationship has always been in that grey area of are they/aren’t they.)
Edit - corrected Hindu to Hindi. Thanks for checking me, anon!

Which voice actors have been your favorites for each member of the gang?
fred - there can only be the GOAT, frank welker daphne - grey delisle velma - mindy cohn is my favorite velma, but i also like OG nicole jaffe. kate micucci's performance in BCSD is something i also really love shaggy - this is too difficult because casey kasem is a legend, while matthew lillard really owned this character and reintroduced it to new generations of audiences scooby - ok...so my favorite movie has scott innes as scooby. but frank welker is too iconic as scooby for me to just not include as well

Don't tell Mom.
Uncle! Randy X F!Reader
Tumblr media
MasterList
Warning :Mentions of Ghostface, Coming out, Mentions violence.
Summary : During the final showdown Randy, Sam, Sidney, Gale and Reader somehow save the day. Though Randy broke his ankle and Mindy begged him to stay over for awhile.
(Am I making Randy a dilf? Yes, Yes I am.)
Tumblr media
You woke up in the guest room alone, you sighed sitting up. You knew he probably was up with Mindy all night. You put a robe around you and shuffled into the hallway. You made sure to stay silent as you walked towards the living room. Randy was fast asleep on the recliner, his mouth partially open. You gently kissed his forehead causing him to flutter open up his eyes.
"Hm?" He lightly groaned squinting at you. You gave him a soft smile, "I'm gonna make pancakes, okay?". He nodded before drifting back to sleep, you glanced over at Mindy who was propped up by pillows. She wore a tank top with bandages wrapped around her right shoulder. You made pancakes for the three of you. Martha was still at the hospital with Chad, his recovery wasn't as speedy. You grabbed the remote off the side table by the couch. You turned it on letting the Saturday cartoons play. Mindy sat up some narrowing her eyes towards you.
"Aunt Y/N?"
"Yeah?" You said peaking over from the kitchen. Mindy nodded, "Just making sure it's you.". She plopped back down drifting back to sleep. You found breakfast trays under one of the cabinets. You set two of them up, one for Mindy and one for Randy. You gently placed Randy's on his lap and ruffled his hair. You then got Mindy's, "Good morning you two.". Mindy glanced at you, "Too early.". You put the tray down on her lap, "It's 10 am.".
"I agree with her." Randy muttered. You put a hand on your hip, "Then you make breakfast.". Randy looked at his pancakes, "Second thought, I'm just gonna shut up.".
"How's your ankle, baby?" You asked gently. Randy chewed a bite of pancake, "Stings like a bitch.". You sighed, "I know, I'm sorry.". You went over to the side to give him a kiss.
"You two are so gross.." Mindy cringed. Randy smiled, "You'll get it when you're older. Besides it looked like you had a little girlfriend at that party.". Mindy went silent, "It was just Frances..".
"Is something wrong?" Randy tilted his head towards her. She shook her head, "I mean I'm out to my brother and friends. But Mom doesn't know.". Randy nodded, "I don't think she'll mind.".
"You're not mad?" Mindy asked quietly. Randy shook his head no, taking a bite of pancakes.
"It's none of my business who you love. Guy, Girl, Unicorn.".
Mindy smiled, "Thanks.". Randy shrugged, "Don't thank me for having common sense.". Mindy smiled to herself and took a giant bite of pancakes.
"But don't tell mom." Mindy added. Randy nodded, "Of course. But if you need help I'm here for you.".
"Question."
"Shoot."
"Did Y/N really throw a lamp at Billy Loomis when he stabbed you?". Mindy asked. Randy lightly chuckled, "Yeah, she kinda went ape shit.".
"Yeah that's what the stab movie portrayed.". Mindy said softly. Randy leaned back relaxing from his meal.
"Never seen it.".
"How you're in it?! But not really.". Mindy said.
"Did you see the actor they chose for me? Come on! Plus Y/N was way hotter than that chick. Here lemme show you.". He grabbed his phone scrolling through photos. Mindy stared at him, "Do you know how to use a smartphone?" She asked jokingly. Randy gave her a look, "Yes. I do. I'm not that old.". You came back in with two mugs of coffee.
"Here ya go". You gently placed Randy's coffee on the side table.
"Look at her! I found the picture from an SD card on one of her old cameras." Randy shoved the phone towards Mindy. Mindy squinted at the phone while taking the mug from you.
"Wow, Aunt Y/N you were way out of his league." Mindy said. You shook your head, "Stop showing people pictures of me.".
"She's barely aged too." Randy muttered turning off his phone.
"She used to carry this camcorder everywhere in college. She'd always take stupid pictures and photos of me.". You rolled your eyes.
"Randall Meeks get your ass up and clean up your mess.". You said walking into the kitchen. Randy grunted, "But my ankle!".
"You have a crutch use it."
"You heard her." Mindy said. Randy tried to get up, you walked in helping him get the crutch. You grabbed the breakfast tray and Randy grabbed his old cup from yesterday. Mindy watched the two of you with a smile.
"So you're moving out of California?" She called.
"Yeah!" You called back. Randy appeared in the doorway, "I have a new project in New York.". Mindy sat up, "No way! The college I applied for is in New York!". Randy smiled, "That's awesome!". You shooed Randy out of the doorway, he moved down the hall to the guest room. You took Mindy's breakfast tray, "Thanks" she smiled. You shrugged, "It's the least I can do.". You put the tray on the kitchen counter before walking back to the living room.
"How long are you and uncle Randy staying?" Mindy asked.
"I... I'm not sure." You said softly.
"However long we need to!" Randy called from the hall. You put a hand on your hip, "You just have to be in every conversation.". He smiled at you, "Yup". He gave you a kiss before sitting down.

It's been awhile since I shouted some good shows so let's do shows I've been obsessed with recently and ones I highly recommend
1) Running Point
I'm ngl I love Mindy kaling and what she writes. Sue me. Anyway I just love all of it. It's funny, has sexual tension and has a messed up but loving family. So you know it ticks all my boxes. So definitely worth a shout
Tumblr media
2) Ghosts BBC
I don't think I will ever stop shouting out this store. It's got heart, found family and just feels like a hug. Definitely recommend
Tumblr media
3) The Residence
Shondaland shows always are amazing. Uzo Aduba is always been a great actress and this show had so many of my favorite actors. It was just excellence and it brought back my favorite troupe of quirky detective so we have to stan
Tumblr media
4) The Great
I can't believe I missed this show. The quirkiness and historical satire vibe just makes me love the show so much
Tumblr media
5) XO, Kitty
I just really love this show. Controversial take- I prefer it to the movies. I cant wait for Kitty and Minho to be in love forever
Also I want Yuri to find someone better than all these people. They really did my girl wrong in season 2
Tumblr media
6) When life gives you Tangerines
I haven't finished it but it's so slice of life coded. It's so heartbreaking yet comforting
Tumblr media
7) High Potential
I just started watched this - but it's for all the Mentalist, Psych, Castle enthusiasts like me :)

Hey, uh, have you heard Mindy Kaling's tea on actors filming sex scenes? And about how they're not always as awkward to film as actors say they are? And that actors in fact go to great lengths to say they're awkward when they're not?
I'm sure there's some skeezy shit that goes on because of it but when I read this article, all I could think about was drewniel and then I had to run here to your blog.
https://www.capstewart.com/2018/07/when-it-comes-to-sex-scenes-mindy.html
omg i hadn’t seen this ….. scream. BUT LIKE. this is written in a way that’s meant to be a bit scandalous and raunchy but i have also heard from [REDACTED SOURCE] that this is very much true and it’s even MORE true with good intimacy coordination! like because an intimacy coordinator will walk actors through those experiences and the feelings they might feel and in general encourage extraordinary practices of consent between actors which builds trust which makes things sexier.
but literally stuff like this makes me think of MY DREWNIEL 😫 i know a few things about this which is that they had an intimacy coordinator in early stages but i think didn’t filming the actual scenes? and also that luca will act out what he’s imagining for the scenes with a member of his crew who he’s been friends with for years which i also think is awesome. also thinking about that scene where the interviewer asks about the sex scenes and daniel kind of stumbles and luca goes “well it’s funny” and daniel goes “riiiiight it was so funny. which is why we were laughing 🙂” and luca kinda fujos out. my favorite clip of all time. all the signs are there and i am reading them 🤓☝️

The idea of Scarlet Johansson voicing Amy is so funny to me because she would the second actor after Keanu Reeves to go from a SpongeBob movie to a Sonic movie (in case you didn't know, Scarlett voiced Mindy in the first SpongeBob movie)
Oh my GOD!

to be fair, according to marty, elvis had firmly believed that blacks and whites should be separate romantically. he dated joan blackman and when marty asked about her, he said she revealed she'd gone on a date w/ a black man and it turned him off. elvis was known to be contradictory and hold other ppl to standards he didn't hold himself to and i think his attraction to black woman was another example. that's probably why marty claimed that about the flirting.
I mentioned Marty Lacker specifically because in the Alanna Nash book whenever race is mentioned, it just seems like it is always him who has something to say about black people and Elvis. He just seemed hyper-fixated on race and that’s why I believe he may have held some prejudice and wanted to extinguish the idea that Elvis found black women attractive because he didn’t agree with that himself. Like for example when asked about if Elvis dated Maggie Smith (a black woman) Marty alluded that she wasn’t attractive enough for Elvis, and then also telling that Diana Ross story and saying that Elvis found her unattractive… it just comes off as strange to me personally
I’m not hating against Marty or saying that he lies about everything, I just wanted to point out that all of these men have their own biases and will only tell stories as they see them, even if it the situation had a different reality
but I have read that story about Joan Blackman and it was also what ended the relationship between him and Mindi Miller in the late 70s
“But then Elvis found out she’d been involved with black actor-football star Fred Williamson, and while it preceded their own relationship, he pulled the plug, just as he had on Joan Blackman when he heard she’d dated a black man, too. “He wasn’t a racist person,” Mindi Miller clarifies. “That’s just the way he was raised.”
(excerpt from BLPH by Alanna Nash)
This is obviously a touchy and complicated subject, like Mindi clarifies I genuinely don’t believe he was racist however I’m not saying he wasn’t without his prejudices whether it was conscious or sub-conscious
And we also have to remember this man was born in 1935 in the conservative and religious south and was most likely just a product of his time/environment. I have also read every Memphis Mafia member and some girlfriends say that Elvis held homophobic views but again that can be attributed to his environment and something that was just sub-conscious because of how he was raised and what he was taught. But I don’t believe that he would ever mistreat a gay person or be outwardly homophobic against them despite what he was probably taught to believe
Billy Smith said “I hate to say it, but Elvis was prejudiced about homosexuals…He wouldn’t mistreat them for anything”
I think that having an opinion is very different from actively expressing it
So I don’t believe that he strongly thought that black and white people should be separate romantically because to my knowledge he never said an unkind word about Myrna Smith (a black woman) and Jerry Schilling (a white man) dating. If he was so against it, why would he still be friends with them?
But like you said Elvis could be contradictory and hold others to standards that he didn’t hold himself to
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However I think that actions speak louder than words and I’ve never read a story where he mistreated a black person or publicly expressed any racist views. I want to remember him for the good that he did and there are so many beautiful stories where he helped the black community and uplifted and defended black artists
most notably when he threatened to pull out of playing at Houston as they expressed they didn’t want him to bring his black back up singers, the Sweet Inspirations.
Elvis was having none of that so he straight up gave them an ultimatum and of course Houston caved in and allowed the Sweet Inspirations to perform
And there is no doubt in my mind that Elvis loved the Sweet Inspirations and that they loved him. They have said nothing but good things about him and his character (also have y’all seen the video where he kisses them all before rehearsal in Elvis on tour <3 ?!?!)
Like Elvis once wrote “To judge a man by his weakest deed is like judging the power of the ocean by one wave”

Ghostface!MaleReader revealing himself and killing chad after pretending to be his bf.
This could happen during the chase in the end? But reader dies by Sam by getting shot by her :)
Heartbreak Honeymoon
Chad Meeks x Kirsh!M!Reader
Tumblr media
A/n: Instead of Chad being the one getting stabbed, y/n “saves” him
Warnings: angst, character death, swearing
Quote: "I fucking loved you y/n! But you just used me!"
✁ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
As Chad got pushed out of the way, he saw two ghostface’s stabbing y/n multiple times.
“Y/n! You assholes! I’m going to fucking kill you!” Chad screamed as Tara and Sat held him back.
“G-go” y/n said, giving his boyfriend a reassuring smile before he collapsed to the ground.
“No!” Chad said as Sam and Tara pulled him into the main area.
“Mindy was right, it was easy to juke the roommate lottery, I mean all I had to do to meet you was to room with a conceded condescending alpha, literally named Chad, fuck you guys are so stupid!" Said Ethan.
“This was your grandmother’s Sam, Nancy Loomis, really runs in the fucking family doesn’t it” Ethan said pointing at his mask with the knife.
“Speaking of family, my name’s not Ethan Landry! Is it dad?” Said Ethan.
“Dad?” Tara said in shock.
“If it’s you two that just leaves.. Mindy?” said Sam.
The third killer reveals themself as Quinn.
“Hey roomies, didn’t see that one coming did you?” said Quinn.
“Yeah because you died” said Tara.
“Kinda didn’t, though it was a good way to get off the suspect list. Stab Mindy, stab Gale Weathers” Said Quinn.
“Yep and I made sure I was the first on the scene to swap her body with a fresh one. A little fake blood, a prosthetic, you’d be surprised with what a grieving father can get away with.” said Wayne.
"So it was you three who killed y/n! But it doesn't make sense! Why would you kill your own son!" yelled Chad.
"About that..." said a familiar voice.
y/n walked out to join the Kirsh family.
"B-but how! you died in front of us!" said Chad
"There's something called fake blood" said y/n.
Y/n had this smile, but not one that Chad was used to, instead of being the soft, loving smile that y/n had, it was replaced with a sick, psychotic smile.
"Why do you look so sad Chad?" y/n said with that sick smile.
"D-did you even love me?" Chad said weakly
"Of course I didn't! Don't tell me that you actually bought the act!" y/n said.
"What about all the memories we had!" chad yelled in anger.
"What can I say? I'm a good actor" y/n said.
Chad was hurt by how subtle y/n was about it. All the things they went through together, It was all an Illusion.
Skip to when Kirby shoots at them
All hell broke loose, but y/n specifically targeted Chad. After y/n finally cornered him into the bar area he decided to taunt Chad.
"awww, don't look so sad baby" y/n smiled as he pressed his knife into Chad's cheek.
"I fucking loved you y/n! But you just used me!" Chad cried.
"And who's fault is that?" y/n said as he slightly grazed Chad's cheek with the knife.
“I love seeing you like this, all helpless, it makes me actually consider what I said about us not dating” y/n said obviously being sarcastic about the last part.
Y/n was distracted by a loud bang coming from the upstairs area, which gave Chad the opportunity to tackle him. Y/n just simply smiled as Chad took y/n's knife that fell from the ground.
"Do it, I know you don't have the guts to do it" y/n said.
"Why are you making me do this" Chad yelled with tears in his eyes.
The sweet, cute, innocent y/n that Chad knew was replaced by a bitter, ruthless, and unapologetic version of y/n.
"Fine then" y/n smiled as he pulled out a pocket knife from under his pocket and stabbed Chad in the gut relentlessly, causing Chad to drop the knife and scream in pain.
Y/n didn't care where he stabbed Chad, as long as it caused him to die. As Chad fell to the ground y/n got on top of him and continuously, ignoring Chad's pleads to stop. As y/n raised his knife up for the final blow, Chad saw a bullet get pierced through y/n's head as he collapsed next to Chad. Chad fluttered his eyes open to see Sam with a gun as she dropped it immediately to go check on Chad.
"Chad! Chad! Come on! stay with me!" Sam said as she tried to put pressure on as many stab wounds as she could, but there were too much.
There wasn't much hope left for Chad so he turned his into his ex-lover's lifeless eyes, still thinking that there was still some good in him, as he slowly started to go towards the white light.

Tara: actually u made it bc Mindy told us to “shut the fuck up” lol

Tara: could be a doppelganger?? i’m convinced we all have one running around the world somewhere lol
Mindy: Uhhhhh YEAH OBVIOUSLY
Gale: It’s not Stu Macher, Mindy.
Mindy: But what if it is?
Tara: sPoOkY 👻
Kirby: Does anyone want any popcorn? I can pass it down
Tara: yes pls
Tara: ok 🛑‼️KAREN ALERT‼️🛑 this aunt jane lady is a full-blooded KAREN fr
Danny: 👆
Chad: Karen facts
Sam: True that
Mindy: Yeah it’s her first scene and she’s already annoying the shit out of me
Tara: gEt hEr oUtTa hErE
Tara: why can i see that being Gale tho?? PFFT
Kirby: LMFAO I see it 🙋🏼‍♀️
Sam: Soooo ur saying Gale’s a Karen????
Tara: yes
Kirby: I can’t unsee it
Chad: Bahahaha!
Mindy: Don’t even get me started on the parallels 😆
Gale: Oh please, I’m not THAT much of a bitch.
Tara: yeah ok suuurree
Kirby: You literally radiate Bitch-Karen energy idgaf I’ll be the bigger person to say it
Chad: GET WRECKED
Gale: replied to “You literally radiate bitch-karen energy idgaf I’ll be the bigger person to say it”: I hate you. 🖕
Danny: If Gale is Aunt Jane, then Kirby is Vanessa because she’s a cop.
Gale: Tara is Abby. HA! There.
Danny: Because she’s an annoying little sister?
Sam: o.O
Gale: Precisely.
Tara: no. no fucking way. that’s NOT me AT ALL
Kirby: I’m processing this information
Mindy: Lmfao YES and Sam’s Mike 😂😂😂
Tara: replied to “Because she’s an annoying little sister?”: shut up Danny, nobody asked you. just do what you’re good at and look like ur paying attention 😤🖕
Mindy: Stubborn, immature, feisty… it definitely sounds like you Tara.
Chad: and Mike is quiet, traumatized, and has family issues. That’s Sam.
Chad: Ok fine it’s canon, sorry babe 🫡
Danny: emphasized “Stubborn, immature, feisty… it sure sounds like you Tara.”
Danny: emphasized “and Mike is quiet, traumatized, and has family issues. That’s Sam.”
Gale: At first I was just throwing a thought out there, but now that you mention it, they’re pretty good analogies for the Carpenters.
Kirby: Ditto
Kirby: Guess we’re FNAF characters in another universe 😂
Sam: Their relationship isn’t anything like ours tho
Chad: Sure, it is!
Danny: Mike and Abby love each other a lot, but they fight every other day, if not every day. You and Tara do that. They have absent parents. You two do too. Mike is constantly holding down a job to support him and Abby. Sam, you do that. Abby does what she wants, regardless of what Mike says. Tara does the same thing. Sounds pretty accurate to me
Mindy: I respect the resemblance 🫡
Kirby: Whoa— 🤯
Gale: See? I know what I’m talking about, Tara. 😉
Tara: no. . . that’s 1000000% INACCURATE
Sam: Ok maybe it’s a little similar, but still…
Chad: Round of applause for Danny! Guess he’s not so clueless after all 👏👏
Gale: 👏👏👏
Mindy: Kudos Danny kudos 👏👏👏👏
Kirby: 👏
Sam: Kudos
Tara: NO. fuck ur applauding. you guys don’t know me at all smh
Mindy: Hey T, wanna draw a picture for your friends at Freddy Fazbear’s??
Mindy: Sam, you’ll let her, right? They’re just innocent animatronics that wanna play with your sister 😁
Tara: GODDAMMIT I AM NOT ABBY!!!!
Sam: I’m not sure how to respond to that 🙃
Gale: Everyone in favor of Tara = Abby, say “aye”
Mindy: Aye 🙋🏽‍♀️
Chad: Aye-aye, dare I say (love you Tara 😘)
Kirby: Aye
Danny: Aye 🫡
Mindy: replied to “I’m not sure how to respond to that 🙃”: Just say aye
Tara: Sam don’t you dare
Sam: I’m not. I still don’t think they’re us…
Kirby: You two are no fun
Gale: It’s all fun and games until the games turn against them.
Sam: The fun was supposed to be watching the movie!
Danny: Alright, I’m out
Chad: Same
Tara: yeah everybody shut up so we can watch k thx bye
Mindy: Lol victory is sweet
Sam: emphasized “Alright, I’m out”
Kirby: 👌
Gale: replied to “Lol victory is sweet”: It sure is.

I am absolutely thrilled to be doing my 8th annual guide to the Oscar Nominated Short Films (read my 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023  and 2024 guides). Anyone who knows me knows I am a longtime champion of the Short Film categories for Animation, Live Action and Documentary at the Academy Awards, mainly because I have made short films and I know how hard it can be to tell a story in a short amount of time.

This year’s nominated short films are available from ShortsTV both in theaters and online. I’ve watched all of them and here are my thoughts and predictions:
Best Animated Short Film:
This category is always cool because of the varying styles of animation. Magic Candies (Japan) is about a lonely boy Dong-Dong, who decides to buy a bag of candies instead of marbles and begins seeing some strange things. At times, the animation seemed almost like puppetry or woodmation for this imaginative tale. In the Shadow of the Cypress (Iran) is about a former captain now living in a secluded house with his daughter and suffering from PTSD. It's a silent movie in that there is no dialogue. Yuck! (France) is about kids at a Summer camp who are grossed out by older people kissing, until the main boy wants to give it a try with a girl camper. Wander to Wonder (UK) is about some miniature characters in a 1980s children's TV show, who are left alone in the studio after the show's originator dies. It boasts notable actor Toby Jones as one of the voices. This is very creative animation, but I'm sure animated purists will take issue with some of the live action pieces being combined into the film. In Beautiful Men (Belgium / France / Netherlands) three brothers stay at a hotel in Istanbul for hair transplants. This is the one animated short nominee that could have easily been a raunchy adult dramedy if it was live action, but within animation it was able to encompass more mature themes like older men with insecurities.
Will Win: Wander to Wonder seems to be getting some momentum and it's got some notable cast members. I think the live action element, might dissuade some animators, but it's charming enough to just win!
Should Win: Beautiful Men was the most original and entertaining of this year's animation nominees.
Best Live Action Short Film:
What a category this year! First up is Netflix's Anuja (U.S. in Hindi), which boasts star power in its producer Mindy Kaling. This shows a 9-year-old girl working in a garment factory and she is given an opportunity to go to school and has to make a decision. It had very stylish cinematography and tugged at the heartstrings. The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent (Croatia) takes place on a train that is suddenly stopped by military forces in an ethnic cleansing operation in 1993. There is an undercurrent of tension and fear throughout, even as we the audience are not seeing the horrors beyond the train, it's felt in a harrowing way. The New Yorker's I'm Not a Robot  (Belgium / Netherlands) begins with a woman at her workplace doing one of those logins to prove you're not a robot. When she has trouble logging in, she takes a survey that assesses she might be a bot and that causes her world to unravel. I liked the idea and the build-up, even if the ending was a letdown. A Lien is about a family dealing with a dangerous immigration process. In less than 15 minutes, this drama packs in more than a lot of features even try for. The Last Ranger (South Africa) is about young Litha, who is introduced to a game reserve by the last remaining ranger, and they are ambushed by poachers as they try to save the rhinos. This film truly makes the argument for seeing the Oscar Nominated Shorts in a movie theater. The scenic locale is breath-taking on a small screen, but probably looked way better on a big screen.
Will Win: Any of these could easily win for different reasons, but A Lien is very of-the-moment with Trump's immigration policy being a hot-button issue.
Should Win: The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent gets a ton of credit for having a lot to say without actually showing the horrors it alludes to it. But I think A Lien is the best of any of this Live Action Shorts batch!
Best Documentary Short Film:
This year's Documentary Short Film nominees cover a lot of varied ground: New York Times' Instruments of a Beating Heart (Japan) is about a first grade class in a Tokyo elementary school that are going to perform "Ode to Joy" for the incoming first students and the subject is a girl who was selected to play the drums in the song. You are rooting for her as she gets so scared and upset during rehearsals, but it shows the power of music, which was a similar theme in last year's winner The Last Repair Shop. The New Yorker's Incident is a reconstruction of a 2018 police shooting in Chicago. It is a unique documentary in that it is made up entirely of actual surveillance and bodycam footage. It is disturbing to watch and there's also long stretches with no sound, forcing the viewer to watch what's happening that much more. MTV Documentary Films' I am Ready, Warden is directed by Smriti Mundhra, who was nominated in this category for 2019's St. Louis Superman (which I praised in my 2020 Shorts Guide). This very intense doc looks at a convicted murderer on death row. Prior to his execution he tries to reach out to his son and the victim's son. It looks at the situation from all sides. Very sobering to say the least. Netflix's The Only Girl in the Orchestra is about double bassist Orin O'Brien, who recently retired from the New York Philharmonic. The doc is directed by her niece Molly and it's a conversational look at Orin's life growing up with Old Hollywood actor parents, her love of music and her career, including re-connecting with former students. The Kennedy / Marshall Company (yes, THE Frank Marshall is a producer of this) present Death by Numbers about Samantha Fuentes, one of the survivors of the Parkland High School shooting. It shows her grappling with feelings of anger and sadness as she prepares to face the shooter in his trial. To say this is powerful would be an understatement. It documents this subject's life, memories and the trial, it used animation, poetry and art to enhance Fuentes' narration / interviews.
Will Win: There is a lot of heavy subjects in this year's category, which is why they might cancel each other out and The Only Girl in the Orchestra, which is more uplifting and celebratory, could steal the thunder.
Should Win: This one is difficult to choose, but I think Death By Numbers was the one that left me the most speechless and went beyond just a documentary short and felt like a moving life experience.
This year’s Oscar Nominated Short Films can be seen online from ShortsTV as well as select movie theaters including programs at Coolidge Corner Theatre and Alamo Drafthouse Boston.

It’s been a year since I watched The Facts of Life. Crazy.
I’m still in the subreddit, tho, and Mindy Cohn started drama a few days ago on a podcast by calling one of the other actors a “greedy bitch” for supposedly going behind the others’ back and trying to get a solo tfol spinoff while the others were talking about doing a reboot. Then she says something like “we were united over 40 years of not talking about each other and doing each other dirty and this kind of wrecked that.” Like ma’am you’re the one talking about it publicly and causing drama. The others didn’t say anything.
And then she’s like “I’m not going to name names but if you go to my Instagram it’s the one who I’ve interacted with the least over the past couple of years.
Fans figured out it was Lisa Welchel bc Mindy didn’t follow her. But when I checked out of curiosity, Mindy is following Lisa. Then someone on Reddit said that Mindy re-followed Lisa a while after the podcast came out and was deleting negative comments about Lisa on her recent posts. So it feels like Mindy regrets saying it and doesn’t want Lisa getting the heat for it. Like she didn’t think as many people would actually go and do the detective work, so she re-followed Lisa hoping that people wouldn’t be able to figure it out??
I hope the rest of them have more class and just let it blow over. She’s the one causing drama. Who the heck want a Facts of Life reboot anyway? Not me. People need to stop with the reboots. We don’t need them.
