There’s been a few rumours that the Russos (and one of the writers from Infinity War/Endgame) may be coming back for Avengers 5/6! I’m curious about what those movies will be like, because they’re going to be even MORE crowded with a gazillion characters. 😅

And particularly, I wonder what the role of the Guardians is even gonna be in them… or at least Star-Lord, if no one actually has any plans to bring them back — which seems to be the most likely outcome. Personally, I wouldn’t actually mind too much if the new Guardians were brought back to join the final battle or something like that. It might be nice as a last hurrah for Rocket, maybe!

But what do you think? I know your opinions on those movies, so… I know what you have to say will be very interesting. 😁

oooooh boy. this just unlocked a whole bunch of competing thoughts in my head. i hope i can make sense of them enough to type them up.

here's the thing. i don't trust the russos or the IW/E writers but i am a person who (1) believes that people can grow and become better at damn near anything they want to, and (2) i am happy to be wrong. maybe the russos and whichever writer who is coming on board will have taken good lessons from the last five years since endgame (five years holy shit) and they'll come out stronger, better, more respectful storytellers. maybe they'll listen to other, better, more respectful storytellers on the team. hell, maybe disney will even let them be better (disney properties seem to be at their best when the mouse is least invested in controlling its indentured creatives). and of course, quality and effective storytelling won't only be on the shoulders of the russos et al. it will also be on the people who are working on the adjacent, intervening movies, and whether they are capable of and permitted to create compelling narratives and fully-developed characters along the way.

now, another thing i think will be tricky is if they choose to do another massive ensemble-battle (like the final endgame fight). i'm just not sure almost anything they can do will be actually satisfying to anyone who identifies with the characters who aren't the main focus. the reason that so-called "girl-power" moment in endgame was so fucken dissatisfying for so many of us was because it was unearned. condescending. you can't choose to feature so few of these women in the course of the whole movie, kill the only one of them with more than like three lines, and then throw every woman left alive into thirty seconds of battle choreography and think that your target-audience will see that as anything but patronizing. if the russos go for that level of sprawling battle-pageantry, that's what will happen, on some level. we just can't pay attention to every character the way they truly deserve when the cast is that massive.

and... i imagine this is exactly how the guardians would feature, if they aren't picked up by anyone in the meantime: one second of screentime in the background of a big fight, maybe with rocket's signature word as his new team advances to ultimately be lost in the ranks. or a singular star-lord, fighting on the side of the new avengers.

now, i'll let you in on a little and possibly controversial secret: i don't need more of rocket in the mcu. i think the mcu might fuck up a beautiful story. if they were to bring him back - unless it were a complete alternate timeline like a new cartoon - i almost think it would need to be a wholly different genre. here are the best ways i think disney could bring "mcu" rocket back:

fuck copaganda but brooklyn-99 had a distinctly guardians vibe in terms of a bunch of well-meaning dysfunctional idiots coming together under extremely exhausted but HIGHLY effective leadership. we could take this ride through space in a star-trek-esque adventure-of-the-week approach or base it in knowhere so we can really see what it looks like to be a guardian in that community, and meet some of the characters like xlomo smeth, ssssaralami, hoobtoe, the broker, HOWARD, etc.

mst3k but it's like, movie night on knowhere. they project some disney movie on the side of one of the bone-buildings and rocket and groot are always making commentary. but they're not the only ones. nebula's there, and for kid-appropriate movies drax and the kids are too. sometimes howard comes along and he and rocket get drunk and compete to be the harshest critic. adam tries to crack jokes sometimes but he's bad at it.

nebula and rocket during the snap. IN SPACE. mostly. i'll accept occasional visits to terra check in on thor. i suspect we see a lot of kraglin on the third quadrant and maybe spend some time helping with reconstruction in knowhere.

a super-ironic self-aware parody of some old sitcom like full house. i'm open to rocket being the father-figure and the new guardians being the chaotic fam, but i'd also be open to it focusing on the star children, calling it "drax the dad," and having rocket be the uncle-jesse-character. which brings me to my last option, which is

actually center the show around a singular someone else, like adam or phylla, and have rocket occasionally make an appearance as an important background character: a father-figure, a mentor, a captain, a guide, a beloved pain-in-the-ass. occasional conversations over the comms where he's like "are you eating enough? are you cleaning your cannons like i taught you? you still closing your eyes when you squeeze the trigger 'cause i told you to stop fuckin doing that. when are you coming home? nebula misses you and your brother is driving me fuckin crazy"

i do think there are other things that good writers could make work but these are the ones my heart rests on because i just don't trust disney/marvel very easily these days

of course i'm gonna watch whatever disney/marvel puts out into theatres and/or on disney+, especially if the guardians are in it. and especially if my guy is in it.

but i'm also fully expecting to have my heart broken. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Petra felt a wobbly smile grow on her lips and she had an overwhelming urge to press the cassette against her chest or against her lips. “Yeah,” she whispered, trying to keep her feelings from rising up and escaping out of her, bubbling up and out into the painted wonderland of the sky. “I’m definitely your Lady Star; however, I still think the nickname is a bit lame. Star-Lord would be so much cooler.”

“I told ya before, Pet. There’s no way in hell I’m ever calling you Star-Lord,” Rocket laughed as he pulled a curl in good fun.

“Aw, come on. Give it a try,” she giggled back as she popped the cassette into the Walkman and adjusted her headphones. “C'est moi, le grand Star-Lord, le hors-la-loi légendaire, seigneur des étoiles.*”

“Legendary outlaw? Lord of the stars? Baby-girl, you gotta earn that sort of title. It doesn’t just land in your lap. Also, isn’t that the wrong gender and everything?” Rocket teased as he took out his data pad to study.

“I dunno. It’s just that Star-Lord sounds so much cooler than ‘Lady Star.’ No one's gonna take Lady Star seriously,” Petra fretted

“No one should ever take you too seriously, ya goof. I brought you out here on a date, so listen to some pretty music and look at the stars. You gonna play that mixtape I made you or not?”

“Y- yeah,” she nodded and pressed play and the music bloomed to life in their ears.

may i offer you a reluctant but protective father figure bruce in these trying times?

"hey, spider-kid--" "it's uh, spider-man, actually?"

bruce calls him peter most of the time but will sometimes shorten to pete later on. peter calls him dr banner out of respect.

related, but betty adores peter. she loves having intellectual conversations with him and asks to see the formula for his web fluid to see if she can make any improvements.

bruce looks over some new designs peter is trying out for his web-shooters once and is impressed by his engineering talent. peter is beyond happy at the praise.

hulk calls peter "little spider" because he already knows a spider (natasha).

bruce's trouble sense🤝peter's spider-sense. there is a scene in the ih novelization where bruce gets a Bad Feeling when betty is talking to leonard; this is before we know leonard will later call the army on bruce. between these two nothing gets past them.

they both have fast metabolisms and need to eat a lot, and bruce is still getting used to eating enough to actually let his metabolism work the way it's supposed to after years of not knowing if he'd have enough food to survive the day. add in uneven sleep schedules and you get a lot of them running into each other in the tower kitchen at 3 am.

peter loves asking bruce about recipes while he cooks. bruce is used to taking up as little space as possible, so peter's inquisitiveness is new, but he finds he doesn't mind it. the conversation makes it easier to not get stuck in his own head.

bruce also teaches peter some quick meals to make if he's on a time crunch / somewhere with little resources. (they don't talk about how neither had parents to teach them life skills like that.)

bruce already keeps blankets in his lab for when he works late and is too tired to go to an Actual Bed. peter sometimes borrows them. bruce doesn’t mind.

if we're talking post-no way home content, hulk did canonically retain memory of peter's identity in the comics after one more day. the same happens here; bruce is affected by the spell, but hulk isn't. bruce recovers his memories of peter from his subconscious and immediately is like i gotta help the kid. oh god oh fuck is he okay what happened-

peter telling bruce what happened to may and the spell and stuff and it suddenly strikes him that peter has no one. and like hell is bruce gonna let that happen.

But wait! If Rocket is still watching our movies from Earth, what is he gonna think when he finds Guardians of the Galaxy?? What if the next movie he watches is about him?!

this is a phenomenal question. what if, indeed? put that in season three

i feel like it would be a struggle to decide whether or not to tell rocket about the movies — to point them out. you couldn't be sure he wouldn't get mad about them — or worse, get weird about them.

maybe you finally decide to tell him, or maybe you hesitate too long and the decision is taken out of your hands when he finds them on his own — but either way, it's rocket, so he's definitely gonna find out at some point.

i think he'd demand to watch them all immediately. he'd have a curling snarl on his mouth for at least the first half-hour of each movie, and it would return to his lips whenever he remembered that he's supposed to be looking disgusted. but rocket either doesn't realize how much his ears and tail give him away, or he thinks you're too much of a humie to interpret the data. so even when he's trying to look all disgruntled and annoyed, you can tell that he's alert, interested, tailtip flicking as he focuses gleaming red eyeshine on the screen. he leans forward like he wants to breathe in every pixel. occasionally he scoffs — that ain't how that happened — but mostly he's just fascinated.

because, well, rocket's always been good at fitting things together. broken bits of a robot cellmate to create the firearm that would save him and his new friend groot — screws and bolts from the milano to make a moon-destroying hadron enforcer. batteries to make a bomb, and scraps of stolen metal and magnets to make a key.

but the one thing that rocket has never been able to make fit are all these disparate shreds of loss and anger and pain, piled and stitched together as clumsily as his broken body.

and now he's watching the cornerstones of his life played out in a narrative, like there's some kind of meaning to everything he's been through. like someone loosened the stabbing-wire threads holding together all his cobbled-together things, and gently restrung each one into a strand of stars and amber beads. even when the movies aren't accurate, they're still — benevolence. empathy.

absolution.

he probably cries quite often during the movies — i think rocket would definitely be a crier. he'd be weeping silently beside you on the couch, in tandem with his film-star counterpart, and even more times besides. after the last end-credits scene rolls, he sniffles, and then scoffs, and starts riffling through a list of inaccuracies.

clearly these morons don't know how jump-points work, he says, and the collector was actually way more insufferable in real life, and wow, pete ain't that much of a jackass, and nat wouldn't say that shit about me. wait, did she?

but you're pretty sure, judging by the watched history in the disney+ subscription you're sharing with four other households, that he's rewatching them after he goes back up into space. more than once, from the looks of things. and he hasn't said it in so many words, but you think he's found a strange sort of comfort in watching these stories play out through another person's eyes, and that understanding fills you with relief. you'd been worried, but there's no anger, and there's no weirdness.

until a week-and-a-half later when the comm he left with you crackles to life, and he's demanding you tell him what the fuck fanfiction is.

in what universe does nebula not continue to keep in touch with pepper and morgan. in what universe does thor not keep in touch with rocket and nebula at least. (the answer is this one apparently)

the mcu at large has done the guardians of the galaxy SO dirty (i don't have a novel-long response to this one - at least not right now - because i am incoherent with fury). like they were just a quirky little afterthought haha look at these dummies and their talking tree and feral raccoon

(when really they've had arguably the most coherent and cohesive multi-movie arc, the most beautiful storytelling, and some of the most character growth and development in the entire fucking mcu)

like i think their only "competition" is maybe loki and he got twelve episodes of extra screentime to work with

and look it's not even just because i love the guardians (though i do. i love them very much). it's because - i mean, disney, capitalism, etc, but also you can tell when a story is told and characters are written by people who love them. and an increasing amount of marvel content feels like it's written by people who have been given a list of objectives.

and i want to add… i think a lot of people get scared of “parasocial relationships” (scare quotes intended) but like. interactions on the internet are real, and all our interactions matter, whether it’s being nice to your grocery store cashier or supporting your best friend on a bad day or taking care of your sick sibling or being patient with the new barista (i LOVE new baristas. they’re trying so hard and they deserve all the kindness + tips). or, you know, sending a really encouraging, loving ask to a fellow fanfiction writer. all of our interactions matter.

and this interaction has mattered to me. deeply. so, thank you, my friend. for everything you wrote to me personally, but also just for putting this kind of goodness out into the world. life is short and we’d be better off if we all indulged our kindest impulses.

part of my trip home lines up with rocket & wanda’s road-trip so i do a LOT of scenery-gazing on the pennsylvania turnpike. other than some hyperconservative billboards, it’s a beautiful drive any time of year. evergreen mountains and snow in the winter, infinite wildflowers in spring and summer (with the addition of little snow-melt waterfalls in the spring), gorgeous autumn colors for as far as the eye can see.

but i also listen to short-story podcasts (usually horror, preferably of the supernatural variety) and, when im tired, a medley of over-loud music. and last time, i turned on voice-to-text and drafted half of the final windfall chapter lol.

it’s always better when you can bring a friend, even if they don’t drive (i can get pretty carsick as a passenger so i prefer to be the one driving). my partner helps a lot when he can come (on holidays usually) and we can talk about literally everything. we also have some friends near us who come from our home-state and the last time i drove them back, they filled me in on about seven hours’ worth of obscure tolkien mythology (at my request), which was SO fun ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶
