A missing Mcspirk scene about Sybok, from Star Trek V. That takes place after the party but before they make it back to Yosemite. This fulfills two of my bingo prompts for the Mcspirk Bingo being hosted on the @mcspirkevents blog.

Summary:

Jim decides to check on McCoy a few hours after the party ends. Bones is alone, and upset. The tension in the room is palpable as Jim decides to risk bringing up the whole Sybok fiasco now. He needs answers. There's a deep-seated need to know why McCoy never told him and Spock about his father before.

Start:

With a familiar roll of his eyes, McCoy leans back in his chair. His knuckles turn white as he grips his knees. “Kirk, just ask already.”

“Kirk?” It sounds strange hearing his last name come out of Bones’ mouth rather than Jim. Kirk steps a little closer until he’s standing by McCoy’s shoulder. All within reach in case the doctor felt so inclined to reach out. “What should I be asking, Bones?”

“Don’t act innocent.” Bones rolls his eyes before turning back towards the window. Starlight shines against his face. It cast small spots of lights scattered throughout the shadows about him. Deep blue eyes twinkle, as they look out. “I know better than your usual acquaintance.”

It’s an unfair dig. Jim folds his hands behind his back in a parade rest. “And yet after everything that happened today, I feel as if I’m getting to know you for the first time.” When McCoy raises his head, Jim twists just enough to face him. He offers an amused smile.

Bones drops a hand onto the arms of the chair. “You know me Jim.” McCoy never looks away. His gaze is steady, and tone certain. However, Jim can see the sadness in his eyes. The lack of shaking in his voice does very little to hide the grief, and fear evident in the curl on his lips, and the light shaking of his leg.

Jim should comfort him. If this were any other time he would have done just that, but hurt rears its ugly head, and he asks the one question that has been bothering him since Sybok’s sudden show.

“Do I?”

Curled lips fall into a flat line. Water wells up along the corner of already wet eyes. “Does this really change so much?” This time the shaking shifts from McCoy’s leg to his voice.

Before he can answer that, Jim must know. “If I say it does?”

McCoy hangs his head. For a moment it stills. Time slows down as Bones takes a deep breath, lost in thought. Jim squeezes his wrist within his hand. Why didn’t you tell me? Is there a reason you didn’t trust me? Have I ever proven to be disloyal, or judgemental? Tell me Bones. Why? Jim could ask, but why wouldn’t McCoy just tell him? There has been so few secrets between them in the past, and maybe that’s the problem. Kirk deliberately inhales. All the secrets that have ever lied between them were Jim’s or Spock’s. Bones has always been an open book. They were blinded by their perceptions, the disguise McCoy dons. If it was a disguise then what has been the truth? Were they ever friends? Ever more? Did he even have the right to call himself anything but a stranger?

“Then you should find a new doctor.” Jim takes a step back. Bones refuses to meet his gaze. That’s for the best because there was no way for Jim to control the pain rushing through his body. It feels as if the enterprise was splitting into. As if the warp core was shattered right in half and about to melt down. It might as well, for what is life without McCoy, or Spock for that matter?

It would be even worse than his time as admiral.

“Bones,” Desperate for a bit of normalcy Jim reaches out. He rests a hand on the doctor’s shoulder. Rather uncharacteristically, McCoy pulls out from beneath Kirk’s grasp with a glare on his face. More like a cornered animal than a man, he pushes his chair back, standing unsteady, eyes trained on Kirk’s. The captain’s voice was far fainter than he wanted. “Why?”

god i really want to sign up for a bad things happen bingo card and just like. write the messed up whump and h/c that my freaky (derogatory) little heart really wants lmaoooo, i haven't written h/c for the sake of h/c (aka without, like, turning it into a Fic) in so so so long, but also i have enough on my plate with ye olde trying to build a consistent writing habit with my mcspirk bingo card - which is more about writing stories for me lmao, and not just, like, me leaning over my keyboard in a dimly lit room rubbing my grubby little hands together as i hurt someone (leonard mccoy) and then let the people who love them kiss their forehead and comfort them.

but oh i was looking at the list of the prompts, and i was like, yeah, yeah i do actually want to let my h/c freak flag fly lmaoooooo

i know it's not a good idea because i do not want to let myself get overwhelmed and/or in over my head! but also. also. also. i still have le ongoing problem of wanting to turn everything into a capital-f Fic instead of just dashing off nonsense, like i'll dash off nonsense all day here lmaoooo, but when it comes to a story i want to??? this sounds so pretentious. i always want to write something??? Good???? i don't mean good writing or whateve,r i mean like a??? meaningful story??? (ugh so pretentious) (and to be clear i'm NOT saying i'm succeeding - only attempting!!!)

and the siren call of writing 1k about a cardboard cutout bad guy that has a knife to mccoy's throat while mccoy backtalks and kirk tries to bargain and mccoy is trying to hide the fact that he's already been stabbed in the side and spock has to carry him back once kirk shoots the bad guy??? listen. listen.

but also i do know myself and would i be Content with dashing off 1k nonsense or would i. still. the meaning. would i still the meaning. that's the question. the meaning. would i still.

am i looking at my neighbor's yard like wow that grass looks so green and takes no upkeep (probably), do i still want mccoy with a knife at his throat and jim's desperate eyes and steady voice and spock's steady eyes and the imperceptible tremble in his hands as he picks mccoy up from where he fell (absolutely)

i mean i could just get a card! it doesn't mean i have to write anything! (that's the devil speaking)

Q: What are you hoping to write in the coming year?

Ooh good question! I actually have something big planned-- my first Spirk fic. It'll be a Highwayman "AU." After that, I've got an idea in mind for one of my McSpirk bingo prompts!

In a more general sense, I'm hoping that 2025 brings more long-form pieces and chapter fics.

What is Mcspirk Bingo?

It's an always ongoing event where you are given a bingo card filled with 24 prompts + a free space. You sign up for a card and are sent one within a week of signing up.

Rules:

Whatever you create (fic, art, video, gif, graphic, etc.) has to include mcspirk (platonic or as a ship. QPRs are 100% valid.)

Tag this blog when you post your work so I can reblog it.

Make sure you use #mcspirk bingo - on your posts so I can find them.

You can take however long you want with your bingo card. There's no due date.

When you get a bingo you can get a new card.

If you get a bingo you'll get a post congratulating you and highlighting your work. If you manage to fill in the whole card we'll add you to the Super Mcspirk Shipper list, with a link to your social media(s) of choice.

1.Is there any time limit?

Nope. Feel free to take as long as you want/need. Once you have a card it's yours to do with as you please for however long you want to work on it.

2. Can we do multiple prompts with one creation?

Absolutely! If you can work multiple prompts into anything then you can mark them all off.

3. Should we mark off prompts we've done and post the cards?

If you want too. That makes it easier for me to see who has gotten a bingo and who hasn't, but you don't have to if you don't wanna. All the cards have assigned numbers for me to go back and double check for whenever anyone gets a bingo.

The Results!

After three days with a three-way tie, Mcspirk Month came out on top as the winner!

Later tonight I'll start a poll asking when people would like Mcpsirk month to happen. Which leads to more news, tied for second and third place was Mcspirk Bingo Cards, and a McSpirk Big Bang.

As for the Mcspirk Big Bang I'm going to be working on the rules and signs up for those. They should be open sometime between this and next month. Keep an eye out!

I wrote this for the Silence prompt on my Mcspirk Bingo Card. Mcspirk bingo is being hosted on @mcspirkevents.

Summary:

Jim Kirk is back. Spock and McCoy feel his return through the bond. All too quick it's gone. They've lost him all over again.

Story:

It's a blip. A barely registered flush of emotions, joy, excitement, and a deep eagerness. Spock’s presence had never felt like that. Nothing has felt like that, except.

"Jim." He whispered the name.

As if in answer the sensation had pushed one name to the forefront of his mind in return. Bones.

 It burns briefly like a sun through the bond, before dying out and disappearing. Gone. McCoy falls to his knees, barely hanging on to the corner of the dinner table in his room. It lasted just long enough, however faint the sensations were, for McCoy to know it was more than a memory. It was too real to be a vague bout of his mind going.

“Spock!” 

Dangit! Where is he, and what was that?

His whole body aches. It feels as if a ton of rocks were crushing him. Those damn mountains. McCoy lets go of the table. He presses both hands against his aching heart as if their touch could soothe the pain. It hadn’t worked back then when he first heard the news, and the act is just as useless now. A sharp pain had blossomed in his lower gut as if something large, metallic, and dull had been run through there. Hyperventilating, McCoy rocks as far back and forward as his strained muscles and the pain will allow.

He’s dying.

McCoy doesn’t know how or why, but he knows what death feels like.

This is it.

So why is there a sick sense of satisfaction in his stomach?

Spock knows what's happening the moment he feels Jim re-enter this world. McCoy's confusion is pale in comparison to the bright, welcomed, flood of emotions and presence of James T. Kirk. As McCoy falters, accidentally voicing his question through the bond without much purpose, Spock takes to the bridge. He's in the middle of giving the pilot a set of the vaguest instructions she's ever heard when the presence vanishes again. Mere minutes after its return.

Spock goes silent. Nervously, the pilot slows the ship. "Still this direction sir?"

His brow furrows, as grief floods the bond once more. It laps against the joy that had been coming from Jim. Overlapping it eventually, the longer he lies dead. He had been so happy in those final moments. Why? What had pulled him away, just to give him back? Was he a gift-wrapped present for death? Had the years of his disappearance, his assumed death, been filled with torture so despicable he craved the end?

He had not felt tormented upon his return. Surely, he must have felt them just as they had felt him. Unless he's grown so used to the lack of the bond he didn't even register it, until that final second. That brief moment of 'Bones'.

"Yes, keep heading in this direction. Go for as long as you can.” 

McCoy cries out his name. His mind screeches from such a deep pain, that Spock knows, however little had been fed to him through the bond, was too much. He should have regulated it more, but he had no cause to expect this. Never had he anticipated…. “I must attend to the admiral," and figure out where Jim Kirk now lies.

Illogically, he hopes this time too, is a ruse.

Nothing would soothe McCoy’s pain so fully than a reunion with Jim.

hii, I missed mcspirk month 2024 and I was wondering if there'll be any sequel to it with different prompts, like mcspirk month 2025

Hello!

Firstly, even though Mcspirk month 2024 has passed if you want to make fanworks inspired by the prompts, then go ahead. The AO3 collection will remain open and as long as you tag this blog your Tumblr post will be reblogged.

Secondly, to answer your actual question, yes there will be! Mcspirk Month 2025 will be hosted in May 2025.

In the meantime there will be other Mcspirk events if you're interested. The Mcspirk Bingo Cards are still available, if you want to fill out a form for one of those:
