You curse under your breath but decide to speak up yourself and not tell them through Hoshi.

“D-don’t take the black pills! Only the white ones!”

“What?” Hoshi was helping Jun when he hears your voice. Loud and clear. He looks to your direction with confusion written all over his face when he notices it too. The pills from his box have a different color that yours. You don’t care if the others hear you or not. At least you are sure that one of them can so you don’t waste a minute and rush to the other side to collect all black pills before anyone can take them. You have no idea if this was really the right choice but something in you told you so. You have the feeling that you are doing the right thing.

As you rush to Wonwoo who has a black pill in his hand, his eyes are focused on yours as if he can see you. Although his eyes are half closed because of the poison, he raise his hand a little for you to take if out of his hand. Seeing them in pain caused your heart to ache. For a second, you stay beside him and doubt your decision. In your head it wasn’t a game anymore. As much as you tried to remember yourself that it’s just a game your friend had recommend to you, you slowly but steadily fell deeper into the story.

Hoshi’s voice pulls you back into reality so you quickly get up and help him hand out the white pills and assist them as much as possible, as someone no one can see.

After everyone who got poisoned swallowed a white pill, you watch them for a while before walking away and taking a seat a couple of tables away from them. Absentmindedly, you knead your thighs as your mind goes wild. Why two colors? This must be another test. But it’s a 50% possibility that you could be wrong. There was no hint that told you which one was the right one against the poison or maybe both are?  

You panic slightly. What if it were the wrong pills? Or worse, both colors were wrong?? No that couldn’t be. There has to be a right choice. Or was it to just wait for it to be over? No. He said they would help. That narrator told you that they would help. He wasn’t lying, or-

“What are you thinking about?” 

Your head snaps up to see Hoshi beside you, also sitting on a chair. After knowing who it was, you can’t help but to lower your gaze again. “I’m just worried i guess.” 

The boy beside you makes an agreeing noise, gaze fixated at his friends as he folds his hands in his lap. Neither of you says a word. The room was quiet besides some soft voices, talking to the boys on the floor, saying reassuring words.

“I’m glad we have you here, helping us.” Hoshi tells you after a while. You look at him but he doesn’t meet your eyes. He doesn’t move at all. You notice how he bites on his lower lip, slightly chewing on it. He is nervous just as you are.

“Have you heard that voice, Jeonghan?” Jeonghan nods at Seungcheol. “Yeah. Loud and clear as if she was right beside me when I was helping Vernon.” Seungcheol sighs and pats Seokmin’s shoulder who is sitting next to him, leaning against the wall. Now all 7 poisoned boys are sitting beside each other in one row, all against the wall. This way it is easier for the others to assist them in for example giving them water. 

“Your nose isn’t bleeding anymore. The pill seems to work, ” Woozi says to Mingyu who is half smiling with closed eyes. “I feel a bit better though.”

Joshua’s head is resting on Jun’s shoulder as Seungcheol fans air at him. Previously he told him that he was feeling hot. Maybe because of the pain and the sweat. “I can’t believe i got poisoned. That’s a newbie mistake.”

“Thought you were clever,” Wonwoo jokes and suddenly Joshua has enough energy to look up to glare at him. “I’m sorry to correct you but I am.”

“Whatever guys.”

Jeonghan grins and shrugs. “Guess y’all have to listen to the maknae.”

“Wow, what a time to be alive.”

“Shush Seokmin.” Vernon smiles tired.

“Well, seems like y’all are fine again if y’all are able to talk like that.” Jeonghan snorts and helps Wonwoo with the water.

While the others feel better slowly, two of them inspect the reason of the chaos. Seungkwan and Minghao stand beside the long table and he holds a small plate with traditional sweets. Everything looks normal. Seungkwan wonders if the poison was sprinkled onto the food. With a fork, he pokes the fried chicken. 

“They could have used it to make the food or use the poison as a ‘special finish’,” Minghao states, now holding the bowl with Japchae. Seungkwan nods and looks at the others with a sigh. That’s when he notices Hoshi sitting in the back, seemingly talking to himself.

“Can I ask you something?”

Hoshi’s sudden voice makes you jump a little since it was rather quiet between the two of you. “Uhm, sure.”

“How did you know that the write pills were right and will help?”

“Uhh..” you have no answer to that. Fidgeting with the hem of your shirt, you look at the boys, avoiding Hoshi’s eyes on you. There is no denying the fact that it was just a feeling. That you weren’t 100% sure. “I… felt like it has to be. I’m sorry. It could have ended up very badly but you still listened to me.” The blonde boy beside you doesn’t react so you turn your head to him, catching him shake his head. “It’s okay. Everything’s fine. We shouldn’t think about what could have happened when they feel okay again. It worked and that’s all that matters.” You feel a little better hearing those words from him. Your intention was to help and nothing else.

“Thanks.”

Hoshi is about to say something when you see Seungcheol helps Wonwoo to walk over to where you are sitting with Hoshi. Wonwoo wipes off the sweat from his forehead with a white scarf while the other arm is wrapped around Seungcheol’s neck. 

When they are nearly right in front of you, you get up and want to step aside when you hear Wonwoo’s voice that makes you stop in your tracks. “Where are you going?”

Swallowing, you look into his cat-like eyes. Seungcheol has a confused expression on his face. “What do you mean? Hoshi’s sitting there and not moving at all.”

“I don’t mean him. I mean her.” 

Your eyes widen and that’s when you realize that Hoshi joined you earlier as well. Without seeing you? Automatically, you turn to Hoshi, pointing your finger at him. “D-do you…. also?” You blink at him for silently explaining what you are talking about.

He understands right away. “Yeah.”

“Since when!?”

“When you helped with the black pills.”

“And you??” You point at Wonwoo.

“Earlier. When it became dark in the room. But just for a second. And then.. again when you helped us.”

“W-wait. You are seeing the ghost!?” Finally Seungcheol joins your conversation, eyes wide when the realization slowly sink in. 

Your mouth is slightly open. Why are you scared all of a sudden. Furrowing your eyebrows, you try to find words to form a sentence. To explain the situation. 

Suddenly it was dark.

When you open your eyes, you are lying on the cold floor. Groaning, you push yourself up with your hands so that you are sitting. Looking around, you can’t see anything but it seems empty. Where are the others? Why are you alone?

A faint sound finds its way to your ears. A whimper?

Your body feels heavy but you manage to get up. Where are you and what is that sound? Stumbling a few steps forward, the sound gets louder. It is a whimper.

“Who’s that?” You ask into the empty room. It seems as if it comes from the next room.

“It’s going to be alright. Don’t worry. It’s… going to be alright.”

“R-really?”

Someone was crying. Continuing to walk towards the voices, your breathing quickens. What the hell is happening? Why are you trapped in a dark room all by yourself. Why is someone crying and the strange feeling that it is someone you’ve been with just a moment ago makes you feel bad. You feel hot and cold at the same time when you hear voices again.

“Why don’t you say something? Open your eyes!”

Tears are filling up your eyes. They are indeed familiar voices. “Hey! What is happening!? Are you alright???” Your shouting voice fills the room and the echo hits you. You feel small and helpless. Without noticing, tears start to roll down your cheeks.

Out of nowhere a deep voice appears and startles you, causing your breathing to hitch. 

“Seems like you care a lot for them. You forgot what I told you, mh?”

With your palms, you wipe the tears off your face and ball your fists, ready to fight whoever and wherever that narrator is. “Your mission was to just make it out alive. With no bond.” He pauses and your shoulders drop. You are alive. But are the others? And what about the bond? You didn’t bond with them, do you? You still know that it is all just a game and not real- “And you failed.” “I didn’t fail!” You are quick with your reaction. Your courage to contradict surprising you as well. You feel offended all of a sudden. You did everything you could and the boys even felt better with the pills. You didn’t fail. 

“What about your tears?” Your breath hitches again. “You care for them.”

“B-but-“

“Controlling emotions isn’t an easy task, I’ll give you that. Actually I’m a little sad. I wanted to watch you a little longer. Too bad.”

You stand there, staring into the darkness while the crying in the background becomes more and more less audible.

“God, my head..” You cough and whine before opening your eyes. You feel something over your eyes. The VR glasses! Are you back in your living room? Hesitantly, you grab it and pull it off your head, rubbing your eyes and adjust to the light. It is dark in your room. The only light comes from the tv which shows you the cover of the game. Seeing it makes your heart ache.

“They look so happy… I wonder how they are… wait. Don’t be stupid. They are just characters in a game!” You never fell for a game like that and catching yourself to actually think it’s real makes you even more embarrassed. You turn around and want to go away but something makes you stop in your tracks. Turning to the tv again, you look at the cover. Your eyes roam over the picture of the 13 boys.

Section 2 - Chapter 16

> 57% of you chose to try to take the note.

43% of you chose to do nothing.

Without sparing another second, you lunge for the torn note pieces in Vernon’s grip.

He pulls back just as your fingers catch a slip of paper, one that you’re quick to match with the other half. A province, a city… now a street name and postal code as well. Still, a small corner of the note lies crumpled in the boy’s fist.

“Vernon… seriously,” Seungkwan mutters, “What’s going on with you?”

You glance back up and reach for the very last piece, but before anyone can think, it’s lying in the snow underneath Hansol’s dirty sneaker. He rubs his shoe forcefully into the ground, destroying the most specific part of the address you needed, without another word.

“Vernon!” A few of the boys panicked yelps overlap, but you don’t bother to pick apart voices as you stand, frozen, in absolute shock. Nobody moves for a second. It’s silent.

A furious growl breaks through the air and, with less than a moment to react, Soonyoung has Hansol pinned against a tree trunk by his neck.

“Do you wanna go home?!” He shouts into the younger boy’s face, “What the hell are you trying to do?!”

Vernon claws at the hands around his throat through pained grunts, but Soonyoung’s grip only seems to get tighter. Your heart sinks.

Wonwoo and Coups hurry forward alongside many of the others, prying Soonyoung off of the younger boy as he doubles over in a coughing fit. As the group scatters about in panic, trying to console Hoshi, trying to console Vernon, even trying to console you, Vernon glances up for merely a second to meet your eyes. His seething gaze terrifies you; full of fury but somehow empty as if nothing had ever gone wrong.

You try to recollect the flurry of thoughts in your head, completely still in pure shock, but Junhui doesn’t hesitate to pull you out of the tense situation. As the older boy guides you a ways away from the others, built up frustration floods your crowded mind. The note, the fighting, the restlessness… Tears threaten to fall once again. “Hey,” Jun says softly, leaning down a bit to meet your hurt gaze, “Don’t cry.”

Your throat feels choked up, your eyes burn red in anger, and as you open your mouth to assure the boy you’re okay, it feels almost as if you can’t speak a word. He reaches forward to pull you into a quick hug, hand holding your head to his chest for a moment enough that you feel better again. As he lets go, you manage to collect yourself with a nod, the jumbled voices of the others blurring into the background.

“I’m okay,” You say quietly. Junhui nods.

“You are. Plus…” He points over your shoulder, “We made it off the mountain, if that makes you feel any better.”

You turn around with a raised eyebrow to see the very sight you’d hoped to see for nights; an endless mountain disappearing up into the clouds and flurry of snow… with you at the very bottom, one step closer to reaching home.

You marvel at the image, and soon the others do too, interrupting their panicked conversation to realize how far you’ve all come since the beginning.

“We’re almost there,” Minghao says softly, instilling an odd sense of hope in everyone.

The mansion, the village, the city… It’s all behind you now. There’s nowhere else to go but forward.

Coups relieves a heavy sigh, turning to face you all with determined eyes. “That’s why we’re not gonna fight anymore, and we’re gonna keep going wherever we can with whatever we have. Right?”

“Right,” Several quiet voices reply. You wipe your eyes with your sweater sleeve, mustering up the courage to push forward once again. Coups jabs a finger towards a snowed in path stretching across the ground.

“We’re gonna make it, okay?” He says, “No more of this fighting stuff.”

The older boy doesn’t spare another second, walking ahead as the others gather themselves and begin to follow. Minghao helps Vernon stand, and Jeonghan puts a steady arm around Soonyoung. Everyone moves on in blissful silence, treading down the trail without another angry word to be said. Now at the back of the group, Junhui nods your way, patting your back warmly and gesturing towards the pathway with a smile.

“We’ll be fine,” He assures you. You do your best to smile back.

The sun begins to rise while the fourteen of you head forward, sneakers crunching the dirty snow as morning light peers through the forest trees. The snowy mountain weather fades into warm sunlight overtime, and for once in the past horrid nights, you aren’t completely freezing. A few minutes pass in silence before the boys force themselves to talk, unable to handle the unusual quiet amongst one another. There’s conversation, and there’s sunlight, and something about the moment feels so peaceful despite your sore, exhausted state.

Hours pass, and the sun rises higher into the sky throughout the remainder of the morning, fading into an unfamiliarly warm afternoon. The snowy ground begins to disappear as you walk on. You’re awestruck at the sight of grass and the cool green of the trees, scenery you were never able to enjoy up in the frozen hell of the mountain. In a way, it all feels like a mere hike with friends and family, almost like the ones you’d enjoyed with your father when you were younge-

“Where are we going?” Seokmin’s hushed voice scares the life out of you, and you look to your right to meet his nervous gaze. He huddles down a bit to meet your height, obviously trying to hide the conversation from the others ahead as you pull the two paper scraps from your pocket.

“This is where we should end up,” You explain quietly, “but I don’t know the home address. It could be any building on that street.”

“We can just hope the guy sees us walking around, then... right?”

“I mean… maybe. I don’t know.”

“Well sh-”

“We’re going the right way!” Chan interrupts excitedly, hopping at the front of the group as he jabs an eager finger towards a road sign. As you near the wooden pole, you’re able to make out a few letters, no more than a few R’s and E’s worn through dirt and badly faded writing. The arrow-shaped sign points ominously ahead, but as Chan skips about, you ignore the anxious feeling. You and Junhui share a nervous glance.

A short walk away, you recognize a loudening sound… the rush of hurried water throughout a natural stream. A lengthy river of some sort comes distantly into view.

“River Bridge,” Wonwoo states calmly, filling the sign’s blanks a ways back as the road winds out towards the water. You all continue forward along the pathway, picturing the said bridge in store, only to stop dead in your tracks when the thing comes into clear view.

The opposite bank extends much further than it seems to when far away. Not only that, but the stream is a hundred times louder this closeby and a whole lot faster than anyone had anticipated. A sign much like the one from before stands crooked in the dirt, just as worn but with a bright yellow warning sign this time around.

To make matters worse, the wooden bridge you’’d prepared to cross is almost entirely destroyed; beaten and shattered as if lightning had struck it down the very middle. You all stare forward in absolute shock, lost for words at the unprecedented situation.

“What the hell do we do now?” Seungkwan asks, but a blurred figure hurries ahead into the river without sparing another word.

The water rises halfway up Soonyoung’s upper arm, just low enough as to where he can fight the heavy stream as he moves. The others reach out to stop him, but the boy is already far enough in as to where he can’t be reached.

“God, Soonyoung…” Jeonghan mutters under his breath. Mingyu relieves a deep sigh before plunging in right after, tall enough to manage the water and hold one of the bags over his head simultaneously. Everyone watches the two in awe but asks no questions, gradually easing themselves into the cold stream after one another.

You hesitantly pull your hoodie up and over your head, tucking it away into Junhui’s bag as you watch Soonyoung near the river bank. You fold the note pieces carefully atop your sweater before pulling the thing closed, trying to collect yourself and prepare for the quick swim. Mingyu tosses his own bag onto the opposite ground as he nears as well, and soon everyone is swimming across the stream without time to spare.

Coups, Chan, and Jihoon slowly make their way into the river, Chan gently gesturing for you to hurry along behind them. You’re nervous, but Junhui sends an assuring nod your way as the two of you lower into the water.

“Careful,” Coups spit suddenly, shocked to see the water rising dangerously near Chan and Jihoon’s necks. The stream picks its pace up as if right on cue, and you find yourself straining to lift your chin above the surface at all. Seungcheol is quick on his feet, fighting his way over to a struggling Chan and guiding him along the water while those ahead climb onto dry land.

Junhui carries the last bag above his head with careful steps, doing his best to stay standing despite the cold stream growing faster and angrier. Jihoon, gathering all the strength in his body, forces himself to keep moving. You grit your teeth at the river’s sudden fury.

“Come on!” Mingyu shouts across the way, himself and a few others crouched by the bank and extending their hands out for you all to take. Forceful wind blows at the trees, making your stomach turn in fear even more.

“Shit, shit!” You hear, whipping your head about to see Chan wincing behind you with Coups pulling at his arm, “My foot got caught! Shit!””

Junhui turns to look for a mere moment just as the heavy winds pull him off balance. The bag in his grip falls atop the water, headed downstream as Jihoon clambers over to grab it.

“Fuck! I can’t!” Jihoon hisses through gritted teeth, fingers gripped around the bag strap as the stream yanks it the opposite way. Junhui reaches for it with all his might, but you can barely hear any of the overlapping shouts through the rush of the river’s flow.

The boys on land gather their grit, attempting to climb back into the water only to pull back in terror at the river’s strength. They fall into a fit of panic, running about and yelling over one another as the five of you fight to join their sides.

“Do something!” Soonyoung shouts from the river bank. 

You glance back at Coups, desperately tugging at Chan’s arm to get the boy’s foot loose. Jihoon and Junhui fight painfully against the rapids ahead, the bag threatening to fall further and further downstream. The river’s wrath grows more furious with every passing second, but any plan you might’ve had is now senseless. You don’t know what to do.

He sat and waited for his best friend to finally answer the phone. Usually it never took this long but maybe she was busy.

“Hello?!” Naomi answered seemingly out of breath.

Woozi was taken aback a bit. “What are you doing? Running laps?”

She giggled a bit. “I’m attempting to finish this Zumba class with Elyse.” She sat on a bench in the gym and crossed her leg over the other.

“Oh I forgot you’ve been working out together lately. Are you busy later?” He asked in hopes that she’d say no.

“Don’t we always have dinner on Wednesday? Of course I not busy.” She replied & rolled her eyes a bit.

Elyse snapped her fingers in Naomi’s face. “Are you coming back or what? You can talk to lover boy later.” She chuckled. She spoke the lover boy part under her breath.

Naomi waved her sister away. They were the same age. Most people wondered how that was even possible since they looked nothing alike but it was simply because Naomi’s parents adopted Elyse when she was three years old. She had been in the foster system before that. She had been apart of their family for so long people tended to forget that she was adopted.

“How about park picnic? The guys want to change it up a bit.” Woozi asked.

Naomi was down for whatever. That’s what made their friendship so easy because they both knew how to just go with the flow. “That’s cool. What should I bring?”

“Whatever you want. We’re not picky eaters. We’re ordering some food too.”

Naomi thought for a moment. “Elyse is the cooker so maybe I can persuade her to cook something.”

“Can she make one of those chicken & broccoli casserole’s?” Woozi loves when she cooked that.

Naomi giggled. “I can try.”

“Also bring Laiya too. She’s never around.” He sounded a bit sad.

“She’s always busy with work now. She got a promotion in the company. I’m happy for her though.”

Woozi cleared his throat. “I think someone else misses seeing her too. She’s kinda the big girl on campus now since she’s part of our A&R team now.”

Laiya, Elyse & Naomi met the guys because they were hired by Pledis Ent to tutor the guys in English. After a year Laiya decided to apply for the new A&R position that opened up so she barely has time to hang out because she’s always dealing with the artists of the company.

“Minghao misses her? They were pretty close at one point.”

“Yeah. He said he’s lucky to even get a response from her when he texts her to check in on her.”

Naomi’s heart broke a bit. They all were so close to one another at one point and now the dynamic was so different. She was all for Laiya following her dreams and aspirations but it didn’t make it any less sadder with her presence being almost void.

“I’ll call you when we’re on our way to the park, okay? If I don’t get back to this workout Elyse is gonna kill me.” She spoke and finally hung up.

The park

The girls were able to convince Laiya to take a breather from working and come to the park with them. She fought a good fight till they told her that she had been hurting their feelings because she never had time for any of them anymore. The guilt trip worked perfectly.

Naomi immediately greeted Woozi to let him know they were there. He was playing soccer with some of the other guys so she decided to take a seat on the blanket with Minghao, Wonwoo, Josh, Kayla, and her other younger sister Natalie. “Hey y’all!” She exclaimed as she laid her head on Wonwoo.

Laiya felt a bit uneasy as she sat down next to Minghao. He barely had even looked at her. “Hey everyone.” She spoke with a small smile.

The other guys spoke politely while Minghao simply waved but there was no emotion behind it.

Natalie looked from him to her. “Soooooo…hows everyone been?” She tried to break the ice.

Joshua chuckled. “I’ve been great!”

Wonwoo was always quiet, and especially when the air was so thick that it could be cut.

Minghao’s emotions were rising and he was starting to not be able to control them. He fiddled with his fingers trying to gain control but nothing was working.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve actually been around y’all, how’s the comeback going? I know y’all finally picked a concept, right?” Laiya asked. She stared at Minghao hoping he would take the bait and answer her.

Minghao sighed. “Did I do something wrong?” He finally broke thru his silence.

Her eyes widened. She honestly didn’t even know what to say. “What are you talking about?”

Joshua stared at Minghao like a proud father. “I know this is your conversation and you need it but my God, your English! It’s getting so much better!” He exclaimed and patted Minghao on the back.

Minghao shrugged his hand off of him. “Thanks Shua but not now. Did I do something to deserve your silence?”

Laiya took a deep breath. “None of you have done anything to me I’m just always working. Even when I’m home I have to work. I just don’t have time for anything but the artists. I know that doesn’t make you feel better but it’s the truth. If I had more time I would hang out.”

He stared deeply at her. Fear of his anger boiling over was the only thing he was worried about. “So you can’t make time for the important people in your life? Or are we not important anymore?” His diarrhea of the mouth just wouldn’t stop.

“Of course you’re all important to me, what do you mean?!”

Minghao chuckled a bit. “You fooled me. I really thought you might be the one but how can that be when the feelings are all one-sided!” He stood up abruptly.

Laiya was shocked that he had just confessed his feelings for her. She didn’t see that coming at all. She thought they were just friendly. She watched as he walked away. Her whole body stilled.

Elyse slapped her leg. “What the heck are you doing?” She asked Laiya.

Laiya snapped out of her trance. “I’m sitting here in shock. What does it look like?”

“Well snap the hell out of it and go talk to him!” Elyse snapped.

Laiya simply stared at her with tears in her eyes. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Do you care about him?” Elyse asked.

Laiya simply nodded.

“Even if you don’t care the way he does you at least owe him your understanding. He deserves that much. He’s hurt and you need to fix it.” Elyse spoke firmly.

Wonwoo simply stared at her as she spoke.

Laiya stood finally and went to search for Minghao. She didn’t know what would happen and honestly she deserved whatever was coming. She hadn’t realized he cared that deeply for her and she felt like she had been a terrible friend to all of them. She was just way too wrapped up in the A&R team. She needed to find a balance some way somehow.

Elyse stood a few moments later after the aura had went down some. “I’m gonna go cheer for the guys with Seungkwan.” She smiled and walked away leaving everyone else behind.

Joshua stood too. “I’ll come with!” He ran off with her.

Natalie looked from Naomi to Wonwoo. “I don’t even like soccer but I guess I’ll go watch too since y’all are so quiet.” She rolled her eyes and ran over to the others.

Wonwo sighed. “That was a lot.” He wasn’t a man with a lot of words but that’s what made him so intriguing.

Naomi rubbed his back. “It was a lot but I understand where Minghao is coming from.”

He nodded. “I do too. He really likes her, I’m shocked it took him this long to tell her.”

Naomi nodded quietly for a moment. “You’re so mysterious, woo. Do you like anyone? Are you seeing anyone?”

He eyed her peculiarly. “Seeing someone? What does that mean?” He wasn’t quite fluent in English but it had gotten a lot better.

She giggled. “Are you dating someone? Or do you want to date someone?”

He cracked a small smile as he looked around at the guys playing soccer. Coups had just scored and as Elyse cheered he engulfed her into a huge hug picking her feet off the ground. “Yeah but it’s just a silly crush.” He turned back to Naomi with a sad smile.

She watched the guys on the field. “Crushes are never silly. Who is it? I can give you advice!” She pushed.

He shook his head silently, praying that she would stop interrogating him.

She stared at him for a moment then looked back at the field. Two things had clicked. Coups and Elyse did have a habit of flirting and being touchy. Also the fact that Wonwoo seemed sad while watching them. “Is it my sister?” She yelled a bit too loud.

His eyes flew open wide. “Can you quiet down?”

“Oops, Sorry. But is it?” She asked again with a cheeky smile on her face.

He debated whether he should say or just walk away from the conversation. “You have two sisters.” He spoke plainly.

“Well I know it’s not Natalie because her and Vernon are dating. Wait- is it Natalie?” She stared in disgust.

He burst into laughter. “Of course not! She’s a bit younger than I would be into plus Vernon would kill me over her.”

Naomi was relieved. “So it is Elyse?!” She jumped to her feet, Getting ready to make a run for it so she could spill the news.

Wonwoo grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth with his hand. “You can’t say anything. Promise me!”

She sighed as her laughter died down. “Why? Why would you not want her to know? Give me a good reason.”

He nodded his head in the direction of she and Coups being overly playful. “You see that? That’s why. Whether they ever say it or not something is there and I don’t stand a chance.”

Naomi clutched her heart. That hurt a bit. “Elyse is just super friendly, she’s always been like that. I wouldn’t read too much into it.”

Wonwoo chuckled under his breath. “But Coups isn’t that friendly with girls so I know enough about him to know that there’s something there.”

Naomi sighed. “I won’t say anything but if my opinion counts for anything I think you’re a great guy and I wish you actually could see that.” She patted his back and walked over to Woozi.

Woozi sighed as she approached him. “Since when are you so giggly with Wonwoo?”

Naomi rolled her eyes. “I giggle with all of you.”

He simply shrugged. “What was so funny?”

“He lik- I cant say, Wooz. I promised that I wouldn’t say anything.”

He eyed her suspiciously. “You like him?”

“As a brother, yes. Why are you being like this?” She asked with a giggle.

Woozi stared out at the others who were eating. “Being like what? I’m just tired.” He saw one of their managers and stood and met with him without saying another word to Naomi.

The night was approaching fast and it had been an overwhelming day. Laiya and Minghao still hadn’t gotten anywhere and Woozi was acting funny. And on top of all that, Wonwoo had confessed his feelings for Elyse and Naomi couldn’t even say anything to anyone. She always kept a promise.

Elyse interlocked her arm with Naomi’s. “What’s wrong, twin?” She asked as she pouted her lips.

Naomi simply sighed. “I need an entire nap, that’s what’s wrong.”

Elyse smirked. “Me too sis. Me too.”

Nvm I got another rant. About Vernon's voice, vocal Vernon and just well him, again. XD. Anyway, lately I have been watching their old music shows (aka anything not from 24h) and their cover of mamamoo 너나 해? HIS VOCSLS???? LIKE EXCUSE YOU SIR THOSE ARE SMOOTH AF. 1. How long have you been stanning SEVENTEEN?

About uhh, 2.5 - 3 years? It’s hard to tell because it was a gradual slipping into that diamond life ya know. I think, beginning of 2017 (march maybe?) is when I first r started liking them, but I had seen Aju Nice and it was on my playlist for a long time before that too

2. How did you start stanning SEVENTEEN?

I liked other kpop groups beforehand and my friend showed me Aju Nice even tho she didn’t like them she liked that song, and then after a while i just searched for more and more songs and suddenly i was whipPED

3. First impression of SEVENTEEN?

At first I thought they were super fun and I digged the youthful and fun vibe from them back then, I knew they were super talented and loved their choreos from the beginning

I’d say... About a month until I had them all down perfectly without messing up anything but I remembered all 13 names within a week or so, but I was a bit slow remembering which name belonged to which face

My Honest Review of “An Ode”

Let me preface this by saying, I am absolutely a Carat, I’ve been a Carat since Mansae era, and I will continue to be a Carat. That said, there were a lot of things in this newest album “An Ode” that made me really think. I wanted to review and process my thoughts on the album honestly, as a fan, as a music lover, as a listener. 

1. Hit: I don’t really think I need to delve into it because a lot of my initial reactions have been blunted since I’ve been repeating it pretty non-stop for a month now. Key point: I really didn’t appreciate the song much on first listen and not even with the whole performance. I mean, the performance is definitely impressive, but it didn’t really jive with the music or wow me in a way that “Getting Closer” did. However, I blasted it on speakers, realized that’s what the song was really suited for, and really came to appreciate it a lot more. 

2. Lie Again: Hands down my favorite song on the album. It obviously cannot be a choice for title song, but the quality is really close to what I expect from a title song. Great choice for instrumentals, great catchy chorus despite it being a mellow slower song, good build up through the verses. Vernon’s part references DWC, and this self-referencing is what I love about Seventeen. It is the best part of being a long-term serious fan of their music, though I know it can be divisive because it alienates new listeners (though DWC was fairly popular, so maybe not?) This song is the follow-up song that DWC deserved instead of “Without You” (possibly my least favorite sub-song from Seventeen, ever, and definitely my least favorite on Teen, Age). The bit after the bridge is a bit of a weak point, but not super jarring to the whole song. Great mixing. I don’t look at line distribution for each song because I don’t think a measure of “how much” part a member got in a 13-member group really means anything, but nothing stood out as a particular problem. Overall, a very well-rounded and well-executed song. There’s really not much to say because I think the song speaks well for itself.

3. Fear: I hate saying negative things about it because it is the title track and I have been so looking forward to it, but there were some points that made it just lackluster. Some errors were glaring, to a point that I don’t think I’ve ever felt about their songs, not even in the early days.

First, some positives. I think “Fear” did really well in terms of synthesizing the R&B base with slightly Arabian/Eastern/Medieval thematic bits with EDM, hip-hop, and their usual rock elements. It sounds like something I might have heard on the radio in mid-2000′s but with contemporary elements that remind me we’re in 2019 already. This entire album is fairly consistent in keeping to the R&B genre, which is honestly a hard move for them because Seventeen has been more rock or punk-rock based for so many of their albums in the past. “Fear” has also managed to keep the HHU from pitching their lines too low. The HHU, including Wonwoo, are not naturally low deep gravelly when they rap. They can pull off that kind of sound in studio, but it’s really difficult to do when they perform live. That’s why you’ll hear them often just doing their lines in a completely different tone than the recorded line. I hope they continue this decision into future songs because it makes it less jarring to hear the rap lines during live performances. Seungkwan’s voice shines like no other in this song. The song really plays to the best qualities of his vocal style. I know lately, there have been accusations of under-utilizing the main vocalists, but no one can say that with this song because it is clear that Seungkwan was very well incorporated into the song. Jeonghan also really fit well into the style of the song. His vocals really stand out, which is a huge achievement for someone who was not utilized much at Seventeen’s debut. 

That said, there are just a lot of things that felt sloppy to me about this song. Now, I cannot tell if these are mistakes or deliberate stylistic choices. However, some of these points are not just my personal opinions, they kinda go against the rules in a meaningless way. The mixing is really clumsy with the song. The beginning line from Wonwoo sounds a lot like how Mingyu started “Getting Closer”. But the glaring difference is that there is no musical anticipation into the part, nor is there a momentum out of that part before the first drop into the verses. There are so many quick fixes they could have done to the little instrumental that comes after his part to offset this, but because of the lull, the song immediately loses impact. I’m not sure what kind of effect they were going with doubling Joshua’s part. It sounds unnecessary, but I do like that they started absolutely bare with just the voice for the verse. It creates at least a little bit of tension into the rest of the first verse, which builds up by ping-ponging between more vocally artistic lines and rhythmic rap. Everything gets wrapped up by Seungkwan’s “Someone tell me, what should I do?” And then.

Nothing.

They recover the momentum that was lost through the whole verse, and then there’s just no impact into the chorus. It’s a real shame because I think “The way I love” bit is fairly catchy, so if they had a strong start to the chorus, the whole thing could have been really catchy. Also, the chorus is just a bit too short for “The way I love” to shine. Mentally, I wanted to hear another repeat of the chorus. Now, I’ve made my peace a long time ago with the fact that Seventeen just isn’t really going to chase after trends for their title songs. They’re not going to force themselves into a catchy hook just so the song can be catchy. But “The way I love, the way I love”-- that line is just so naturally perfect as a catchy tune, so it’s a little disconcerting that this wasn’t taken an advantage of. 

I really like the idea of taking away the instrumentals and having Jeonghan just stand alone with that whispery, haunting voice to give a fresh-start feeling for the second verse and keep it from being stale. However, I do believe there was a legitimate mixing error for this part. You can barely hear his part during this section if you keep a constant healthy non-eardrum-perforating volume on the song. If it is that hard to hear his part, casual listeners won’t even pay attention to it. And the whole cessation of the instrument and how wistful Jeonghan’s voice is should have made this part the absolute high point of the song. You do not have to lower the volume so low on the vocal track to keep the atmosphere because you literally just cut away the backing instrumental and his tone is enough to give that feeling. I just have a difficult time getting past this as just a stylistic choice. The second verse is also quite boring compared to the first aside from Jeonghan’s part. Coups’s verse tries to give a little change on the rhythm, but it just doesn’t really work for me, personally. Then we move into the chorus, but it’s better this time because of the little “Oh, oh, oh” break and “The way I love” repeating.

I really feel quite neutral about the bridge. It doesn’t really stand out until it launches into “This is love”. And then there’s just a lot of overlapping elements. I’m not sure if they felt pressured into trying to use all of the members, or as many as they can, for this last bit, but there’s just a lot going on in not a particularly cohesive way. The two vocalists belting, for example, is quite impressive but feels like an afterthought. 

The reason why this song fell a little short for me were primarily the editing choices that made me keep guessing if a certain effect was there intentionally or if it was a mistake. If it was an error, that is something that should not have gone uncaught on the first full albums in 1.5 years; if it was intentional, it was poorly executed. The lyrics-- I’m going to be completely honest. I’m fairly fluent in Korean, and the lyrics are really confusing. I’m not sure what kind of message they’re trying to send-- don’t love me, I’m poison, love me, my mind is corrupted, I’m afraid... If Woozi one day said that this was a song representing a conversation between two people or like a case of DID and two personas within a person warring, that would be a plausible explanation of what’s going on in the lyrics. And Seventeen lyrics are usually not like this at all. Seventeen songs have fairly elegant and figurative lines, cohesive story that makes sense, etc.. It’s part of why the song sounds good as segments (aka the teaser bits) but doesn’t really work together when it all comes together. 

I do still really like the overall genre of the song. They were really true to incorporating all the elements they said they would use. The HHU, I felt, was more well-incorporated than they have been for the last few comebacks. Seungkwan and Jeonghan’s voices pop out like no other. And it’s really, really difficult to make a dance song that is in a minor key and using scales/progressions that are not part of the more typical, Western music and have it sound natural but sophisticated. I imagine it may even grow on me after a while. But there were just some choices that felt a little bit flat and unpolished compared to what I had anticipated from the teasers. 

4. Let Me Hear You Say: I felt very meh about this song. It’s a cutesy song, and it serves its purpose. Nothing really stands out good or bad about the song. It reminds me a little bit of “Without You”. Let Seventeen have one cutesy almost-vapid song on their album, ok?

5. 247: Definitely not my style, but it blends well with the R&B theme of the whole album. It has all of the elements of those sticky R&B bedroom anthems reminiscent of male solo artists like Taeyang, Rain, or (for those closer to my age) Brian McNight. But minus the stickiness. I do wish that they incorporated a little bit of team element to it-- this whole song could have been sung by a single male artist and I would not have felt weird about it. A group should be accomplishing something different than what a solo artist brings to the table. This is my least favorite performance unit song from Seventeen, but that is not saying much because all performance unit songs are, in my definition, glorious hits, home runs, true bangers. This one just fell a little short of legendary.

6. Second Life: I hear the “hip-hop” elements... ok, Woozi, ok. I appreciate that Seventeen’s vocal unit feels more adventurous than sticking to ballads. This is also a quite meh song for me. The weird stop in the bridge is a bit jarring... to be honest, I don’t think anyone on the vocal unit could have pulled off the effect they were trying to go for, though. I think the lyric content is really warm and appealing to a slightly older audience. 

7. Network Love: I love this song, and not just because I’m a filthy American 외퀴. I love the theme of it. I love the playfulness they have with the lyrics (“I 좋아 = 아이 좋아”). That is also another divisive element about Seventeen’s music that I love but sometimes alienates the public. The whole build up and drop into the chorus is just masterful. The lyrics are witty. If this was a group song, it could have been a decent contender for title song. The theme is very relevant and authentic. Honestly, if Lie Again was a little less perfect, this would be my favorite off the album. 

8. Back It Up: We’re starved for a good HHU song, ok? What a great addition to the HHU’s discography AND this album simultaneously. I mean, my favorite is and will always be “Un Haeng Ill Chi” and “Check In” is also just so well-polished, but “Back It Up” is a great change of pace. I like that they just went ham on the lyrics, on the song, on the mixing. It shows the versatility of the song’s creators. The only sad thing is that the lyrics are so confident and ambitious about achieving more as a group, but in real life, this kind of drive and ambition is only expressed in the 3-ish minutes they have on stage and not reflected in the aggression of their activities and artistic direction. 

9. Lucky: I wonder if Woozi is secretly on a mission to receive credit for the best use of pan flutes and bossa nova elements in a kpop song. He’s managed it once with “Fast Pace” and now he’s done it again with “Lucky”. It’s a very light song. There are a lot of things in this song that can be difficult to pull off because they’re not conventional, but it really works on the macro level. A stark contrast to how “Fear” fails to make unconventional choices sound intentional and cool. I love that the lyrics tell us to “slow down” and the whole song has that on-your-toes kind of fluttery rhythm. Light, bouncy, solid group b-side.

10. Snap Shoot: This must have been a strong contender as a title song. I’m almost mad that it’s not (even though it is completely contrary to the whole dark Seventeen/growth theme they’re trying to turn over in 2019). The choir starting the song off is perfectly whimsical. It really took advantage of many of the members. For example, Joshua and Woozi sing comparable parts in verses 1 and 2. But they sing it with their own flow and style, it almost feels like a completely different melodic line. And it works well for both of them. The chorus is super catchy. The concept of the song is really true to the times. It can really work as a summer or a winter song. Very universal, very likable. There’s absolutely no rule that Seventeen “must” do a bright, poppy song. I think that frame is something we have to keep resisting against, especially for older fans who’ve seen the peak of the carefree boyish days. But if we look at the songs that they’re really known to the public for, such as Aju Nice, Pretty U, and Mansae, they certainly have that brightness as a known group characteristic, and they’ve nailed getting a cohesive and inclusive group sound down to a science since those early days. So it naturally follows that Snap Shoot sounds almost effortlessly perfect. 

11. Happy Ending (Korean ver.): I know people really want Korean versions of the Japanese releases because the Japanese singles/titles are great, and they show off new elements of Seventeen. But I am of the camp that if a song has lyrics in it, the melodic line must accompany the natural rhythm and flow of the lyrics, not the other way around (reinforced by my one-time brief conversation with Sondheim). Have you ever seen the “Kevin may not be smart, but he’s strong” meme? That’s what the song feels like to me. And this will happen for any song you try to translate into another language. It’s so, so, so difficult to keep the fluency of the words while retaining most of the original melody. Not saying it’s impossible, but this particular version did not excel in this regard and the new version only made me want to sing “Kikasete, kikasete” every time because the original was just so catchy. 

Final thoughts: This will not be a make-or-break album for me. I still hear a lot of the Seventeen I fell in love with or grew to appreciate. Some of the b-sides from this album, like Lie Again and Network Love, were truly great songs. But this made the less stellar songs stick out even more in contrast. I did like that they’re venturing into the “dark Seventeen” territory more because as much as old fans love it and still miss it, the teenagers are no longer teenagers and Seventeen does not have to box themselves into one image. I really appreciate that they changed up the basis of their sound to the more R&B territory, undoubtably guided by Bumzu, who has quite a history in that area. And they really stuck to it through the album. Though not as cohesive as YMMDay had been, the album does play like the songs, for the most part, belong together. That is kind of a lost art in the kpop world nowadays. CD’s are for pretty packaging, the tracklist shows off the width of the group at best, and no one seems to care for how the songs work together in order. When you listen to “An Ode”, it sounds like an entire album. Seventeen is a group in kpop that is quite counter-cultural in this way. I also really appreciate the effort that went into the music video production. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it was a lot of things that the fans had been asking for a long, long time. The visual for the music video for “Fear” is definitely striking and appealing. That’s a big part of the music in kpop, so it would be irresponsible not to mention how well the MV works with the music. 

That said, there are few disappointments and choices that seemed questionable, especially when it comes to title track “Fear”, which should be their best song from the first full length album they’re dropping in over 1.5 years. As a Carat, I cannot be afraid to speak about things that are not working for me in this album. First off, I don’t have this delusion of grandeur that because I had some suggestions about improvements to this album, Seventeen members will take my specific words to heart and be so hurt and broken over it. If they don’t get the kind of reception they were hoping for, it can be saddening. But they still have literally thousands of Carats-- including myself-- supporting their future endeavors. Second, just because the members worked on the album themselves does not mean there’s no room for constructive criticism and feedback from the fans, industry professionals, and even the general listener. I appreciate all the hard work and sleepless nights they put into the album and simultaneously have things that I wish were thought through more carefully. As a fandom, we can’t label everyone who points out a few flaws as a complete heretic. That’s how we only grow insular and never end up reaching full potential. When there is no room for criticism, no more feedback and no desire for changes from fans, that’s when a group hits stasis. And as my old chemistry teacher (perhaps erroneously) liked to say: absolute equilibrium in a living thing means death.

S.Coups: “DINO AFTER YOU’RE FINISHED DOING WHATEVER THAT IS, MEET ME IN THE OFFICE WE NEED TO TALK!” Dino: “You mean you don’t even know this is a swirl?” *looks up at S.Coups but he’s long gone*

Dino is in every single McDonald’s commercial but it really did drive up business

*fast forward 6 days and Dino has completely changed himself*

He’s t i r e d of being treated like a baby and wants to work in the kitchen like the others

a/n: thanks so much! i’m sorry if this is late, we posted minghao a couple days ago incase you haven’t seen it, here

part 1

recap: in which you have a clock that starts at birth and counts time until you meet your soulmate, which it then stops

even though the drive to disneyland from L.A. is less than an hour 

you spent that time learning as much korean as you could 

which really only means the alphabet, sounds, and common phrases, but basics first okay 

that morning after you met mingyu, you and your friends all decided to change plans a little bit 

so instead of spending the whole day shopping, you guys spent the entire day at korea town 

which consisted of you buying whatever seventeen albums and merch you didn't have and even books on learning korean 

the girl there was kind enough to answer your questions and show you an app to download to learn

so you and mingyu text with his and your limited knowledge of each others language

it was funny if you look at it honestly, he’s sending you texts in his not bad english though your almost certain joshua or vernon were helping 

and you are sending short probably grammatically incorrect korean phrases with the help of the book you got of course

with this, he gets across he’s actually filming for an MV

and your like NO. DONT. TELL. ME. I WANNA DIE WHEN IT COMES OUT WITH EVERY OTHER CARAT

and he just sends back a bunch of laughing emojis and your like STOP DONT MESS WITH ME

you tell him what your doing for today and he’s like is the food good 

and you say yes you liked it a lot but your not sure how it’s supposed to taste

and he sends you something in korean which you dont understand fully so you go to your book

and you almost end up s c r e a m i n g

because it translate into ‘then i’ll make you a korean dinner soon ;)”

and your fangirling to your friend about how housewife ming, your soulmate, just said he’ll make you dinner

like a date. date

you give some respond that took you 5 minutes to form but simply said “i’ll take you up on that” and the little blushy face emoji 

from then on, it’s constant talking

while he’s filming and doing photoshoots, he’s sending you selfies and videos of him or other members

and you send him pictures of you at disneyland, eating, or shopping

you secretly get him this little figure from disneyland to gift next time you see him

which might not be coming for a while because of your both busy schedule

his life as an idol and your still a college student

so the two of you have a long distance relationship, and though it’s hard, you make it work

even though you guys did have a few chances to meet it was never more than a week

the first date though, was indescribable 

you both were really nervous at first, and your sure it showed on you just like on him

but it couldn’t get any better

he took you out for korean bbq, where he learned all about you and you learned all the things you didn’t know about him

so you talked and talked and now you knew why everyone raves about their soulmate

trust the universe, if they thought you were good with kim mingyu then your good for kim mingyu

and he was good for you

you were perfect together aka devouring all the food and leaving full

but it’ll be a pity to end the date that fast soooo

you both agreed to go street shopping, where you looked at clothes, little nicknacks, and jewelry

he noticed when you would look at something a second too long and take note on it, not that you knew 

and by the end of the night, when he was walking you back to your hotel

you both stood at the side of the building under the street light, shuffling your feet, not wanting to leave

he nervously reaches his hand up to the neck and rubs it, then pulls out a little box out from his jacket pocket

and hands it to you, who had a surprised expression, nervously

“here, i got this for you”

you gingerly open the box, and find the pretty bracelet being sold by the ajumma earlier

“you... you noticed?” you say looking up at him

your face turns into a full on grin, “it’s beautiful, put it on me?”

and so he did and just when he finished clasping it, you took this chance you pull him into a full on hug

and pulling away slightly, his arms still around your neck, 

after a moment of just simply staring at each other, both knowing what was happening next,

he leaned down, and you tilted your head up

any thoughts of ‘oh my god’ were cleared from your brain as his lips touched yours

the kiss was soft, sweet, and innocent

and when you pulled away, the smiles on each others faces never diminished

as you both said goodnight, you took one last look at him, giggled, and walked into the building

basically the memory of your first date with mingyu was,,, honestly there’s no other word besides magical

so by the time you graduate college, you surprise him with the news of getting a job in seoul

this of course means it’s time to celebrate

and this is the time he does cook you dinner, as promised

his romantic ass books a hotel suite for you guys, be who wants to be in the dorm

the suite was complete with a kitchen and all that

really, the food is amazing

sitting at the dinner table you stare into his eyes

“i love you” you say, a smile forming on your face

“i love you too” he says, reaching his hand over the table to hold yours

and the two of you are in a really fancy hotel room after all

what happens though, you and mingyu leave that to the boys imagination when they ask you the next day
