Iliad Orchestra AU and I’m thinking very hard about what instruments everyone would be
I am very open to suggestions for who would play what instrument 🙏
#Torn between giving Achilles brass or strings#like he plays the lyre in the Iliad it would make sense to give him like a string instrument#like a harp or violin even#he would def be first chair violinist if that’s the case#but i cannot get the idea of Achilles with a trumpet or french horn out of my head#Ajax plays some massive instrument and Teucer plays a smaller version#like Ajax plays a double bass or cello and Teucer plays a viola or violin#Hector plays the same instrument as Achilles bcs narrative foils makeme insane#Paris strikes me as a woodwind guy idk#but not sax#maybe more like a piccolo lol#I can see Oboe Diomedes and flutist Odysseus and Penelope#or clarinet Penelope i like that too#Agamemnon with a Trombone bcs I said so#menelaus would probably also have a brass instrument maybe like a tuba or a sax#ik i said big ajax might play cello or double bass but i can totally see him playing a tuba bcs of their sheer size#helen would play something elegant and refined like a flute or violin#flutist helen ily#this got long mb guys#iliad#the iliad#deadbaguettesrambles#deadbaguettes AU

Here I'll throw ya one. On another blog, they were chatting about Raditz with a crush, and now it's all I can think about. In most fics I've read he boinks Reader/Whoever pretty fast (and those fics are amazing and I love every bit of it), but I have been super curious about what it'd look like for him to slowly open up to and get a crush. How he'd act and all that.
Would he be all tsundere and deny it? Would he try and woo us (and probably fail miserably)?
i literally love this?? brainrotting over it now Raditz my beloved <3 im gonna bsffr, this was a self-indulgent piece
Request Chungus ML Dragon Ball ML Raditz x f!reader Genres: Headcanons|Fluff|Romantic
Raditz With A Crush
With a human crush:
so first of all- you're human, he's saiyan, and he sees a problem with this (even before the crush)
so i read on the saiyan wiki that saiyan men LOVE strong women, so you're very feisty and will absolutely butt heads with him, no questions asked
at first he's annoyed like "the AUDACITY of this human to oppose me???"
but then it kinda becomes a thing between yall and he's like "man the audacity lol" and he finds it kinda hot
more time passes and yall spend more time together before it passes the territory of "hey, friends don't do that!" and like everyone points it out (yes he survived the piccolo beam :3 or the dragon balls brought him back idk you choose)
but everyone starts to point out the staring and how he oddly is nicer to you🤨hmmmmm
at first for a few months he's like "me? with a human? grossss"
but then Goku and Vegeta are like "humans are kinda goated, we literally have kids with them" so Raditz does some self reflecting
he realizes that he'd totally get with you if you WERE a saiyan so maybe the human barrier is kinda dumb
after this conclusion he makes it his mission to make you fall madly in love with him
every fic i've read of this man portrays him as a frat boy or sex god, and while i LOVE that for him, i'm a firm believer he's an awkward loser when it comes to romance
he flirts with you but in the saiyan way and there are lots of mixed signals
"fight me!" "no?? hEY-" he's already trying to attack you :/
he eventually learns humans are "lame" and do "boring" things for romance, like movie dates or eating out (cringe, right?)
"h-hey human! wanna go to that p-place you keep talking about?" you're thinking for minute because?? THE Raditz stuttered? crazy
but he takes it wrong and assumes you don't want to, so it's a 5min argument convincing him to go💀
similar scenarios happen for a few more months and it literally eats him alive how slow this is moving, it's killing you too dw
after like a year of human dates he starts ranting because you point out that he seemed kinda tense lately
"well i don't know what i'm doing half the time on this planet, i have to live with being the weakest of my race, i can barely stand to be next to you without burning alive-" he kept ranting but your mind blanked after you heard that
with a smile you began to poke him "you likeee me" the HUMILIATION on this saiyans face "you like likeee me"
not how he hoped it'd go, but you two are very happy together :3
With a saiyan crush:
pretty sure it was in canon lore the only remaining saiyans were male, so um, you're the only surviving female, yippee?
you have many suitors to choose from, but uh, most weren't very appealing
and tbh, Vegeta was never an option, you were a peasant or whatever, so he was grossed out🤮couldn't properly carry out the royal bloodline i guess
because Raditz and you were both weak by saiyan standards, you were paired together often, strength in numbers, right?
this crush developed much faster purely because you bonded over:
similar experiences in society and on the battlefield
near death experiences bring people closer than you think
this doesnt mean he acted faster or accepted it any quicker
he was in denial at first because "she's just a friend!" hmmm ok bud
you two started getting split from each other and working with different partners which is what left him to fully realize his crush
this was mostly due to his jealousy of you spending a lot of time with someone other than him, and that he yearned for your presence often while gone
after figuring out "oh! i like her" instead of telling you, he hid it
not because he was scared no, but because he wasn't prepared for the emotional damage when one of you died and left the other to weather frieza's tyranny alone. he didn't want to be without you or leave you alone in this place
it was after he went to earth and nearly died to Kakarot and Piccolo he was like "erm, i'm gonna say something"
after making it back barely alive he eventually recovered and told you how he felt
his story of how strong earths warriors are made you question staying with the frieza force until it was safe to leave
once Vegeta and Nappa decided to invade earth, you and Raditz tagged along secretly and started to live happy lives as the weirdos next door :3
idk if i'll ever create headcanons as lengthy as these ever again
btw i have 2 Raditz fics in the works tee hee

It's just that well simply put Gohan didnt have any time to himself ever. There was always bullshit happening. Then Goku died and Goten was born and Gohan had to keep his mother from falling apart and his baby brother healthy and happy. And it's rewarding work. But yknow
When he wasn't tending to the baby or helping with other domestic chores, he was in his room studying. It's nice to learn about the world he fought so hard to save. It's also nice to not have to have a relationship with his body (as with fighting) so that it's easier to dissociate from all the bullshit. Academia was a lifeline out. It was also a definitive "good" thing to be doing. It was also an escape. And also a source of the stress that he's so accustomed to. And yknow. Maybe the letters started to dance on the page after a while. A life unlived will find life in other places. Maybe the historical figures were his friends. Maybe he memorized chemicals like one would memorize constellations. Maybe different mathematical functions began to represent and facilitate different experiences of emotion. You know how it is
I mean maybe not. Maybe he got out enough and was present enough to not dip into that. If his time alone was really that needed, then I imagine that he would get angry if interrupted; but I don't imagine that he snapped often when his mother called him to attention or when his brother needed something from him. I think that he finds fulfillment and peace in his family and he wants to be there with them. But I think that he also finds habits of repression or self-denial.
I'm not saying that he represses all of his anger, because he doesn't. What he does repress is infinite amounts of survival rage. What he doesn't repress - and what seems like he's not even aware of when he expresses it - is sharp annoyance. A mild example would be when he snapped at Goten for bothering him during his training, which was super funny. A more poignant example is Every Time Somebody Insults his Great Saiyaman Persona somehow. First he was interjecting into his classmates' (strangers!) conversation to correct their misnaming of the new hero, and he didn't seem to notice how rude his tone was or how surprised his classmates were. Then later he stopped two reckless drivers, and they made fun of his goofy persona, and Gohan (without resistance) just threw a petulant fit - and he did not seem to notice how he was Destroying The Road by stamping his foot.
My favorite example was when Krillin told him he looked dumb. I should probably get screenshots. Gohan's Eyebrows Twitched and Reared like Rattlesnakes. And his passive aggression was enough to constituent manslaughter. Masked behind saccharine positivity. It was a vile display. What do YOU know about Fashion, Quiverin..! (<- What we sometimes call Krillin in my house becasue he's always cringing and quivering and being fearful lol.)
OK I didn't get screenshots but I have this timestamped video from the youtube.
youtube
And it makes sense that Gohan is super defensive about The Great Saiyaman. It's the first thing that he's gotten to do/be that was up to him.
I understand that Bulma designed the original get-up, but it was still collaborative; it's not like when Chichi dresses him in what she can afford to buy or make, or when Piccolo dresses him in what he himself likes to wear. And Gohan picked the name. He picked the poses. He picked the voice. He picked the personality. He picked the role.
You know that Oscar Wilde quote that goes something like "give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth"? Yeah. There's madness behind that mask.
It's also a very significant time for him because he's for the first time having the opportunity to associate with peers in a consistent way. And he wants so bad to be "normal" and that's also why the mask is so integral and alluring. And he wants to be a normal bloke and make normal friends, but at the same time, he's out of practice without really realizing it; he hasn't come to terms with how in order to make friends, you have to put yourself out there. He thinks that he can simply make friends while hiding himself and lying about everything. And when Videl starts trying to figure out who he is and pry the mask off, it's a horrifying inconvenience. And Gohan just isn't in the habit of receiving well others' companionship, having lived isolated for so long; when Videl makes him teach her how to fly, he's nice to her, but you can tell that he just wants her to leave.
Her insistence on drilling into him is why they become friends and eventually marry, though.
He seems like an optimistic fellow, and his appreciate for life must be sincere, as his history necessitates it - if life sucked, all of that would have been for nought. But remember, for a good seven years it was just him, his mother, and the new baby. No drama or adventure to bring him out into the world. No friends his age that he could connect and evolve with. Just him up there on Mt Paozu stagnating.
There was definitely a lot of goodness and happiness and stargazing and lovely dinners and hanging out with dinosaurs. But there was also a lot of boredom and avoidance and why-is-the-baby-crying and mom-please-put-the-wooden-spoon-down and mom-please-stop-crying and can-i-have-the-time-to-study-unbothered-please and an undercurrent of feeling bogged down that really isn't apparent until you get out and get moving.
Gohan never says this outloud or thinks this definitively, but it's a natural truth, like the wood that a house is made of - he is going to do everything he can to be a good brother and to protect his baby brother. And it's a given, too, that he'll do everything it takes to keep his mother sane and happy, because everybody else shies away from her, and it's SORT OF Gohan's fault that Goku had died, and he very much wants to give back for all of the nurturing that his mother has given him.
And when you want to be a force of Good that badly, it completely turns you away from the parts of you that may be Bad, and encourages you to be afraid of certain feelings or needs.
When Gohan snaps at people out of irritability or defensiveness, it really seems like he doesn't know that he's doing it, and it comes out in the way that a hurt child may just act out. Everything else that is ugly about him just gets buried deep. And that makes him a weirdo. That's what it seems like anyway

Something that bugs me a little is the insistence that Gohan actively hates to fight period. Bc that's not true!
(This ignores everything that happened outside the original manga/the DBZ anime)
Yes, he lacks Goku's or Vegeta's laser-focus on all things martial arts, but let's be real, all half Saiyans do. Goten & Trunks sure have more passion for fighting than Gohan does but they're much more "human" about it than their dads and have other interests in their lives too.
But while Gohan originally became a fighter out of necessity and had little choice in the matter there are instances when he clearly shows that he is totally capable of enjoying himself in a fight.
For once there's obviously his fight against Cell - once he snapped his "Saiyan side" took the lead and he was enjoying himself a little too much (and ruined it, like a good Saiyan must).
But it also becomes clear in the early Buu arc. Yeah, initially he's not rly interested in the tournament and wouldn't have participated if not for Videl forcing him.
But once he was in he was in. He even got a little annoyed by Videl interrupting his training, and he did want to win. If he really hated it so much he could have entered with the plan of failing the preliminaries, or losing in the first round. But the thought never crossed his mind. I think if you'd suggested he botches it deliberately to get out of it he'd been horrified.
He was going to have fun with it! I think his most "Saiyan" trait is that he's a bit of a showman lol. He likes to be flashy! And he likes to boast! He COULD have just used a plain costume and mask to hide hid identity but nope, Great Saiyaman it is! He likes being seen and being known as a crazy strong superhero. Maybe he'd have been into pro-wrestling with their fancy costumes and showmanship
Even before things went off the rails at the tournament and Buu arc was set in motion he was ready to go. And yes his crush on Videl might have served as motivation: "haha cool she won't be disappointed if someone beats her dad! (I can date her if I beat her dad)" -> he WOULD have thrown Satan out of the ring if he'd gotten to fight him, no questions asked.
And once he, Goku & Vegeta are in Babidi's spaceship it gets even clearer: now, no one is forcing him to fight. Ofc Gohan always wanted to fight when it was necessary, even at 5yo he wouldn't stay home, he made it very clear that he was going to Namek.
But while they were going through the levels in Babidi's ship this still wasn't a serious thing. Pui Pui and Yakon were a joke for them. Vegeta was getting pissed, ok, but aside from that it was just fun and games for them, and Gohan could easily have said "nah have at it you two, I'm sitting this one out" but never once did he so much as consider NOT taking part in rock-paper-scissoring it out to decide who gets to go first.
He was eager to fight Dabra! Dabra told them to take him on 3:1 and Gohan flat out told him "no way, this is MY fight!". And if Vegeta had interfered with that fight to end it quicker I'm 100% sure Gohan would have decked him in the face and told him to fuck off. (Maybe that would have cooled Geets' mood a little lol.)
The problem isn't that Gohan hates fighting from the bottom of his heart. He doesn't. The problem is he grew up with a dad who was 100% a fighter and a mum who was 100% into education, and he didn't find a balance. He didn't even know that might be an option! He thought he'd HAVE to choose one thing, and one alone, and so he chose education.
Who could have taught him otherwise? Maaaaybe Piccolo (post-reunification with Kami), but tbh I think he didn't want to give Gohan the feeling he had to fight. I think Piccolo feels a little bad for putting 4-5yo Gohan through the wringer so much.
Like idk. Let my boy be both. Let him have Goku's legacy as well as make his own!
(I've read about Dragon Ball Online a little and tbh Gohan writing a book on ki and making it widely known? Perfect. I love it. Best idea ever. Probably the best thing that happened to DB since the original manga and Z anime ended. I am accepting this as canon 100%.)

I'm on a four hour car drive, singing at the top of my lungs (terribly, I'm so congested right now, not gonna stop me though lol), and having quarry brainrot. Who among the counselors do you think can sing well and who do you think can play an instrument?
I looove this question and I have to admit I haven’t thought about it that much so this is gonna be kind of off the cuff, instinctive stuff and I’m sure I’ll refine my opinions if others chime in (please!).
It’s kind of weird we never get any campfire singalong action in the game when there’s a guitar in Chris’s bedroom and he mentions Kumbaya, but maybe they’re tired of that from camp by the time the plot line picks up.
Miles obviously is a musician and Dylan’s the music guy so I’d imagine he’s musically inclined in some way. I’ve seen headcanons that he plays guitar and I could see that but I lean more toward thinking he would have taken piano lessons when he was younger and moved on to keyboard and adding on techie stuff like the Mellotron and Moog synth. I think he loves dials and buttons and weird sounds and he can sing but he’d rather fuck around in the noise. Any instrument he plays is gonna get a bit sad if he loses his hand but maybe he’d get more into sampling and remixing and looping computer generated beats as a result.
I think it would be funny if Jacob had a surprisingly angelic singing voice that was completely uncoached and no one ever expected out of him, sort of like Finn from Glee (RIP) but less auto-tuned. I think he’d be an acoustic guitar guy for sure just for the romance of it. Anyway, here’s “Wonderwall.”
Actual footage of Jacob serenading Emma, feat Abi.
Kaitlyn does not strike me as particularly musical though I headcanon that she and Jacob slay karaoke together. She just kind of shouts into the mic like a 90s riot grrl and sings Alanis or Joan Jett and kills.
Abi is so high school marching band nerd coded to me and I feel like she’s a total flute/piccolo girlie or else clarinet/oboe. Or maybe she plays violin in the school orchestra. Something sweet. She’s good but too nervous to perform or audition in front of people very much so it’s just a hobby she shares with people she trusts.
Emma I think would have a perfectly nice mid range singing voice that she’d wish was better. She probably started her influencer career recording Taylor Swift covers for YouTube but she’s a much better actress and dancer than she is a singer. Not quite triple threat material but she believes in herself so she’s trying.
Ryan has such a unique voice that I can’t decide if he definitely can sing or if he’s practically tone deaf. I kind of lean toward the latter. I imagine he hates his singing voice and rarely sings even for fun but if Dylan catches him singing or humming he’s like smitten times one million about it. I could see Ryan playing drums though, I’d imagine he has a good sense of rhythm.
Max, on the other hand, cannot carry a tune but sings ALL THE TIME anyway. And Laura cringes but finds it endearing all the same. He probably plays the ukulele. He just seems like the type.
Laura was a choir kid for sure and probably got solos in school plays and Max was accompanying her on ukulele and playing unnamed roles or else he was painting backdrops or something. We know Siobahn can sing and I feel like that would carry through with Laura for sure. I imagine them doing elaborate musical routines together on car rides even with their vastly different musical abilities.
Nick reminds me of a bassist I know who is maybe the weirdest human being alive. So that’s where I see him. He can sing a little but it’s definitely a backing vocals voice. I feel like he’d be in a stoner jam band just fucking around, playing the same song for an hour while both the band and audience are too high to know the difference.
Chris Hackett obviously plays guitar and Travis accompanies him on harmonica. Bobby plays blowing air over the lip of a jug and also cowbell.
I LOVE THIS ASK EVERYONE TELL ME THOUGHTS!

✯MAJIN CHARM FUN FACTS✯
❥ - They're 5'8ft! But they can shrink themselves to be smaller!(Kinda like Nezuko from ds!)- This smaller form is 5'2ft or smaller! ^^
❥ - Goes by any pronouns! (They see really no point in being labeled as one thing, So they do not mind listening to people bicker about what they are)
❥ - SELECTIVE MUTE. They use sign language to communicate most of the time! However if someone doesn't understand it they always have a trick or two up their sleeve to help!
❥ - LOVES, and I mean L O V E S Strawberries! Offer em one and they'll be your best friend!
❥ - Super big cuddle bug with those they like and are comfortable with!
❥ - Also very affectionate, Platonic kisses are very big with this one!(Kisses will always be on the cheek, forehead or being formal, a kiss on the hand.)
❥ - The neck piece they wear is fur that they acquired from a creature they encountered a long time ago! It's super soft and they only let people they like touch it-(and if they REALLY like you, They'll let you/make you rest your head on it! Uber plush and comfy-)
❥ - Major stinker. If they find someone they think would be fun to mess with, They're NOT leaving that person alone for a good while till they find someone else to go pester-(Examples: Piccolo or Vegeta LOL)
❥ - VERY hyper when it comes to any form of rough housing/fighting, Literally bouncing off of walls and anything sturdy enough.
❥ - When they consider someone as a friend, they have two main offerings for friendship. Bells or fresh strawberries! Accept either and you'll have this lil jester as a possible bestie.
❥ - Very big fan of being picked up. Their favorite ways of being picked up are Princess/bridal style, Piggy back and under the arm-
❥ - Usually always smiles, Kind of a Rengoku situation ya' know?

Resurrection ‘F’ rewrite/tweaking
Written March 15, 2022 (clearing drafts lol)
Noticed that this is generally regarded as the worst of the Super era movies and the worst arc in Dragon Ball Super
So I wanted to see if a few tweaks would make it more enjoyable and didn’t know where to share it so just thought to post it here
It'll mostly be a mix of the movie version and the anime version as I don’t want to go too fanfictiony
Notes, changes, and mergers
Frieza force reviving Frieza with the dragon balls stays the same
This would have Frieza still train with Tagoma like in the anime so he can be stronger than Goku
The anime version of Goku and Vegeta being in that void to acquire God energy would happen during the months Frieza was training to parallel both sides getting stronger
By the time Frieza and his army head to earth Goku and Vegeta are still training with Whis
Then the regular sparring we see them do with Whis would be during the invasion like the movie
For the invasion Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Tien, Master Roshi, and Jaco are the initial fighters like before
In the anime version if this story I would add that Chiaotzu would be left behind similar to how Tien said and Gohan would mention that Goten and Trunks don’t know what’s going either as they’re not ready/mature
And I would add a small thing where Chiaotzu and Videl would monitor the boys and when the fighting starts instead of just flying away like in the anime they would be met with some resistance by the pair
So the Goten Trunks Chiaotzu Videl would be a subplot to make the arc longer
Android 18 just didn’t want to join lol plus had to watch her daughter
The battle against the army happens like the movie (animation and pacing etc) so without much of the Krillin afraid subplot but still elements of it as it added some depth to his character and they divide to better their odds
And a small thing of maybe Gohan being more in the lead to help build his role as the third strongest fighter of the Z fighters similar to the manga version of him later and giving him a Sanji role to Goku and Vegeta’s Luffy and Zoro
Army fight
As it goes on Roshi gets tired first like usual and a fun addition would be to have Yamcha come and assist saying sorry he's late he was further away than the others
Adding Yamcha as I don’t buy he’s that much below Krillin and Tien in power especially when Roshi was here plus it would give him a hero moment but he can still be played with for laughs as he wouldn’t last much better than Krillin and Tien
Krillin getting tired as well stays here with Gohan assisting like in the movie
But when they've beaten the fodder they can't afford to use Senzu beans for stamina as they don't have that many to give
Let’s say they have about 4 beans and there’s currently have 7 fighters and Bulma spectating
This would leave Sisami, Tagoma, and Frieza (with Sorbet) as the main fighters left
Lieutenants
They sense the other two energy and get the range that Sisami is 3rd strongest and Tagoma 2nd to Frieza’s 1st
Tien elects himself to take on Sisami
Piccolo does the same with Tagoma
Gohan was going to help fight but someone like Roshi suggests to save himself for Frieza and recovers stamina just in case Goku and Vegeta don’t make it in time
Meanwhile in the anime version Chiaotzu is using his psychic powers to slow down Goten and Trunks which allows Videl to fight them on a more even playing field to force them to not go join the fight and it works as Videl is a better martial artist than the boys individually, eventually Chiaotzu can’t hold them and they power through and beat Videl and get what they want and start to head to the fight
Piccolo is doing fine with Tagoma, Tagoma is stronger than Piccolo but nothing too concerning at first as Piccolo technique and physiology keeps him in the fight
But Tien was doing ok with Sisami at first but starts to get overwhelmed which leads to Krillin and Yamcha helping Tien making it 3 on 1
A combo attack with the three maybe even Roshi assisting in a turtle school Kamehameha let’s Tien land the knock out blow
(Maybe new technique, maybe TriBeam, doesn’t matter too much but he’s known to have something to show off with)
Piccolo starts to get overwhelmed as the humans defeat Sisami then Goten and Trunks come and after begging to Bulma and Gohan they get the ok to fight as long as they’re fused
In the anime Gotenks joins and with SSJ3 they tip the scales in their favor
Seeing Super Saiyan starts to irritate Frieza
They do a charging volley ball fist combo assisted by Tien and Piccolo (Tien passes, Piccolo sets, Gotenks spikes) to land a big hit on Tagoma
But as the kids get too overconfident by celebrating early Tagoma tries a surprise attack but Gohan punches him similar to how he defeated Sisami in the movie and does the mercy thing as he’s not going to kill them that gets Frieza upset like in the anime version
in the movie version Gohan would save Piccolo by going Super Saiyan getting a similar reaction from Frieza when he defeats Tagoma
Frieza Round 1
Frieza then gets out and ready to fight and Gohan gets ready as Goku and Vegeta aren’t here still
They’re still sparring and get closer to when Whis is aware as his staff blinks but gets distracted by Beerus like usual
Super Saiyan Gohan against First Form Frieza for a little and Piccolo and others comment that it would be a lot to reach super saiyan 2 for Gohan who hasn’t trained much
Then as Frieza is entertained he transformed into his final/4th form Gohan fights him and struggles immensely
As he gets more frustrated Gohan reaches Super Saiyan 2 through his rage and does a better job than before but still not winning as Frieza is still stronger with him
Because of later in Super I wouldn't have him go Ultimate here as it eventually becomes his God equivalent so he'll cap out at SSJ2 here
And just in time Bulma starts to get in touch with Whis and demands Goku and Vegeta and to get there via need instant transmission
Piccolo comments on how Gohan needs to go all out to have their power stand out
And as they all power up, Gohan on his last legs ready to go down fighting, Goku and Vegeta show up via instant transmission
Frieza Round 2
As Gohan passes out Goku says he’s proud and etc and then the main fight begins
And to shake things up for my version Vegeta fights Frieza revealing super saiyan blue
And the two fight evenly for awhile but Vegeta dominates him like original as time goes
youtube
(This truly doesn’t matter as I know marketing and such wise Goku needs to fight Frieza but I don’t really care as we’ve seen Goku fight a little with the sparring)
The same time thing happened with Frieza blowing up the planet
Maybe iIn this version since Vegeta doesn’t let his guard down like Goku, maybe he was so ‘tense’ and arrogant that as he was focusing on Frieza he ignored Sorbet (a weakling) who shoots someone like Bulma or Trunks or even someone like Yamcha which distracts him long enough for Frieza to blow the planet up
Whis rewinds time as even though it feels cheap and lowers the stakes and etc. I do think it adds some consequence as Frieza did win and Goku and Vegeta didn’t learn their lesson
Again can mostly stay the same as the movie
Frieza Round 3
Then Goku comes in and steals the win lol
This can be like Dragon Ball Z Kakarot where it was a beautiful beat down and gives Goku a more pretty win as well as giving the required Goku vs Frieza
youtube
Around 3:53
And the movie ends like canon
Summary
So essentially I included more characters to give characters time to shine
Jaco and Roshi shine against the army
Krillin Tien and Yamcha against Sisami
Piccolo (and Gotenks(Goten and Trunks) in the anime version) against Tagoma with Gohan getting a win (and the boys being comedic relief)
Videl and Chiaotzu do something lol and add a C plot temporarily with Goten and Trunks
And Gohan shines as he's the strongest fighter on Earth and showcases how strong Frieza is before Goku and Vegeta shows as it establishes power levels better
Like everyone is stronger than the army even Roshi and Jaco
Sisami is a little above whatever you would give the humans power level is (people say named Frieza, just stronger than the Ginyu force but a little less than Frieza, even saw that some say they're around Cell level by the time of Super as they have to keep being somewhat relative to Goku)
Piccolo and Gotenks are stronger than Sisami and their SSJ3 level Tagoma is slightly stronger than that and then Gohan as a Super Saiyan is stronger than/or on par with that
(Went more for the movie version of Gohan as that version was by far the strongest and would need to keep him above Gotenks)
But Gohan SSJ is below first form Frieza, SSJ2 is more on par maybe above, final form is above that and ultimate above/on par with that, and Golden Frieza above that
I think it adds the seesaw in power levels that sagas like Saiyan, Frieza, and Cell sagas do just in a much shorter time
As it was back and forth between the hero's being stronger and the opposition being stronger in this version
Vs everyone being weaker than Frieza and everyone is stronger than the army except for one with Gohan being able to challenge that lone exception depending on the version
Plus it kinda gives off the impression that Gohan might be able to win as he’s the one to keep breaking his limits to contend with Frieza and feel relief when Goku and Vegeta get there as he just couldn’t quite do it.
So yeah I think power wise it doesn’t affect universe 6 tournament too much as Gohan wouldn’t be there
Future Trunks arc is unaffected
And for tournament of power, Gohan can still have to regain the ultimate power or at least train it now, maybe they wouldn’t skip Yamcha so blatantly but could just write that he never got a chance for ask or for them to ask him
Krillin Tien and Roshi show how strong they are relative to the others before they go on a long break as are still not on the saiyans and Piccolos level
Power level scale
SSJB Goku, SSJB Vegeta, Golden Frieza
Ultimate Gohan, Frieza (4th Form)
SSJ2 Gohan, Frieza (1st Form), SSJ Gohan, SSJ3 Gotenks
Tagoma, Piccolo, Gotenks SSJ, Gotenks
Sisami, Tien, Krillin, Yamcha
Roshi, Jaco, Chiaotzu, Videl
Frieza Soldiers
Update July 23, 2024
Did do some quick typo fixes and had to replace the kakarot gameplay as the original link I had was dead
Would sta over time and hearing other say it
I think my small change rewrites would be that SSJB would just SS God and save blue for the Universe 6 tournament
But I get that would go against selling new toys and such but seeing SSG Vegeta would be worth it
Again heard many DBZ YouTubers say this but I did have similar thoughts years ago but don't want to be accused of stealing lol

You know that "People who dislike X character (wall of text) vs People who like X character (I like them :))" meme
sometimes I think of the gohan cell moment as something like that.
With on the left it's
"Dragon Ball and more specifically Goku and Gohan's character arks building up for years and years and years of development to this moment where Goku demonstrates his deep trust and pride in his son by giving him a push to be the hero he always was. Showing that he trusts his son more than anyone else here, he knows this is what saves us etc etc 5 pages of references and quotes and pictures of goku being the loving but quirky dad he is"
and on the right it's
"Dragon Ball /Fans/: LOL bad dad, piccolo is the only one who cares about gohan :)"
and then we're stuck in a fandom that adores that second approach because the first approach requires actually interacting meaningfully with the text.
I mean hell, the second stance is so adverse to interacting with the text that they truly believe Goku training his son and helping him see and unlock his potential = bad dad, but Piccolo using Gohan as a conduit to defeat a threat he can't face and being a shit to him (as part of a DIFFERENT character ark in which PICCOLO grew and learned to care about others) = good dad, when he was a shit for 70% of that plot line and was DIRECTLY, STATING IT ALOUD, doing so just so they had an edge in a fight with zero concern for Gohan until his character began developing (as was intended by the whole scenario).
Like I'm not actually saying Piccolo bad or whatever- just that THAT ark was not about Piccolo being unambiguously good- it was about Piccolo thinking of himself as evil shit (and he was being it!) but realizing he doesn't have to be- it was a big part of Piccolo's growing ark but- to be clear- his initial intents were "Gonna use this kid as fodder to hopefully save my ass" and even by the end he had basically just "Done That" but started asking himself meaningful questions that fundamentally changed him and the direction he was going.
So, to follow the logic of the fandom.
Loving your son from day one, dying to protect them, keeping a close enough eye on them to see the potential inside of them and then dedicating extensive time to training and helping unlock that potential- hesitating to apply too much pressure on his son until his son expresses an interest in breaking through these walls (during hyperbolic time chamber training), and then seeing The Moment where your son can break his boundaries and become the hero he always was deep inside, a moment where you can pass on the torch = Unambiguously bad dad
Abusing a kid for weeks and weeks because it could save your skin and because you believe it's "what you're supposed to do" (you're evil after all) when the strong aliens invade, and then thinking "Maybe I shouldn't be mean to the kid, they didn't ask for this." and growing as a person to Later become a kind soul = Unambiguously good dad
Two swings and two misses.

hi hello i see you have a db oc! very very cute
here is your official gush pass! I am interested to know more about her! DB ocs always end up being cool as heck and I love hearing about them!
~sincerely, somebody who has like a whole second show's worth of DB OCs
OMYGOSH- ok, im excited, the thing is everything about my oc is pretty much a blur still, i have many ideas but im not 100% sure on anything!! this is her, for anyone who doesn know her yet
first, the only thing i was sure of was the appearence. i wanted her to have blue-ish skin and pink hair, along with pointy ears.
(kinda spired by them) i wasn't sure if she should be some kind of demon, or half demon half android! or something. the only thing i'm sure about is she is some kind of demon thing. she also started as just a self insert to draw with piccolo, but i also wanted her to be kind of her own thing! (this is why her hairstyle is pretty much the same to mine irl)
i also thought of her personality when making her design, i wanted her to be like a mischevious demon, like a trickster in some way, with a morally gray nature so i gave her her characteristic eyebrows and made the outline of her eyes thicker, to give her that look i saw in other characters
i also struggled with her outfit, i made a bnch of color variations until i decided for one lol
another thing i struggled a ton with was her name. i wanted a name that could be normal for a character in dragon ball to have, but also felt unique. im still not sure on what to name her, for now she´s "Eudaemonia" or Dai for short (Eudaemonia argus it's a species of moth!) but im not 100% happy with it and if we're talking about her backstory.... i brainstormed many, many ideas. like, for some reason she was excilled from the demonn realm and reached earth but wasnt evil fo some reason, or she met someone who defeated her and changed her evil demon ways! or maybe she's half demon android (no idea how that would work) and was on earth to begin with? aaannd i think that's all, ty for reading my ramblings lol

forgive me if i got it wrong cuz i havent watched dbz in a while but i'm pretty sure that piccolo probably caused some of gohans insecurities early on with all the kidnapping and training-
like he probably would have a better relationship to martial arts if goku were the one that taught him from the beginning and in a normal setting, specially with chichi around he might've developed something similar to what he had with his studies cuz i dont personally think chichi would be against gohan learning martial arts more as a sport than something that would get him into dangerous situations like yknow fighting for the destiny of the world??
i know in the end gohan just doesn't like to fight so maybe he would end up doing as like a hobby or something to keep active while in the midst of all of his school work cuz i don't think anyone enjoys the strain that is sitting in front of a pc for hours at a time lol
also i think there was like a headcanon comic of gohan and goten doing tai chi with chichi ?? i dont remember who made it or if i hallucinated it but i think that's a sweet idea
Exactly
and I’ve seen that comic so it’s real!

so I'm currently rehearsing for an orchestral concert this weekend and I can't stop thinking about an orchestral au for the foxes
obviously wymack as the conductor (do you americans call them directors?)
dan as the principal violinist, she's got the drive and competitivity I associate with violinists plus leading the whole orchestra. literally imagine her playing the violin solos in rimsky-korsakov's scheherazade!!
allison as a cellist, literally the most beautiful instrument (maybe I'm biased) but also a little outside the norm. maybe viola but I really can't see her as anything other than a string player.
renee as a bassoonist, unusual and unique instrument! also bass instruments fit her cool and calm vibe like she's the rock of the orchestra (2nd bassoon most important player supremacy) - could also be double bass maybe.
matt as a violinist too, maybe leader of the second violins. this was the hardest for me to decide but again, like dan, he's a leader but also a great team player, and the role of the seconds is to support and balance the firsts and he'd be perfect.
seth as a percussionist for obvious reasons! but also the juxtaposition between him on the bass drum or cymbals or gong vs the triangle or vibraphone or something lol.
nicky on trumpet because he's so extroverted and energetic, I can imagine the conductor telling him to be quieter like every brass player gets told but then really going for it when he gets the chance.
aaron as a bassist. honestly just because the size difference would be hilarious. but actually I promise I've put more thought into it.
andrew as an oboist, listen maybe it's not a perfect match for his vibe but the oboe is v important in the orchestra as it tunes everyone else and also imagine him playing the most beautiful solos just completely deadpan while his face goes bright red (oboist problems). also consider visiting piano soloist?
kevin as a flautist. he's ultra competitive, thinks he's better than everyone else, and can probably actually follow through with that. also kinda elitist. can you tell what I think of flute players?
which leads to neil as a flautist who also plays piccolo! maybe he started out as a clarinettist who thinks flautists are attention seeking but picked up the flute super quickly in high school and secretly loves the piccolo.
plus of course everyones favourite side characters. consider jeremy and jean on french horn, alvarez as a trombonist, laila on viola, katelyn as a clarinettist, thea as the harpist, etc.
then! riko comes in to play a flute concerto with the orchestra...
#the foxhole court#tfc#all for the game#aftg#the foxes#dan wilds#allison reynolds#renee walker#matt boyd#seth gordon#nicky hemmick#aaron minyard#andrew minyard#kevin day#neil josten#can you tell i play the oboe and cello?#also don't come for me flautists#i have just found in my 10 years of orchestra as 1st oboe that 1st flute is either going to be incredible and great to play with#or will just REFUSE to play in tune with me and will do their own thing#i love you all secretly i promise#pls tell me your thoughts#and if anyone has written something like this please tell me!#i'm sure no one cares but i! do!

Make the DBZ Movies Canon
I've said it before - I love shonen movies because they're just MORE. More time with the characters we love with a bigger animation budget (most of the time).
Again, imagine being the kid that LOVES Goku in 1997, and you want to see him go all out. Goku only uses SSJ3 twice in the anime, but he uses it 2 more times in the movies. You get 100% more SSJ3 with the movies. (Gear 4th Luffy is in a similar situation)
Also, imagine if fighting was like sex for sayans. How many GOOD fights did Goku have in his adult life? Piccolo, Vegeta, Freezer... maybe Majin Buu? Then it's nothing until Broli, I think.
(What about Cell, or Ginyu or Raditz - If sex ended with you bleeding on the floor, you wouldn't call that a good experience. lol)
But add in the movies and you could count - Jenemba, Android 13, Cooler, Slug... maybe Turles. (Not to mention OG Broly) Plus, all the other ones that were victories for the other characters like Garlik Jr, Bojack, or... Broly. Come to think of it, they were mostly there to make Gohan (or Goten) look good.
(It's almost like they're subs for Goku, when Goku's not around.)
So, here's my ideas on what you could do with the movie villains to add them to the canon in some capacity. Some would be big changes, and other tiny changes.
One big change up would be starting with Dr. Wheelo. Make him the LAST Dragonball villain. The set up is that he wants to be the World's Strongest. He should try to clash with Goku and his friends like 1 year after Goku became tournament champion. Because he's completely out of his debts as a DBZ villain, but he's just tough enough to give Goku + Tien, Yamcha, & Krillin a challenge. And Toei could just RETCON him in say that it happened. (Maybe make a TV special to show it.)
Next guy you gotta keep is Obviously Garlic Junior. He would make a great re-occuring villain for Gohan. Obviously, Dead Zone slots in pretty much unchanged into the anime right now. It's just a matter of who-meets-who when with Gohan/ Krillin/ Kami. I'd LOVE to see GJ capture Videl, or Pan, and he embues them with evil Energy and Gohan has to fight them but also save them.
Turles would require a major overhaul. The concept of the Tree of Might is AWESOME, but the fact that he's a random doppelganger of Goku REALLY stands out. Maybe we could change him to look like Raditz, and what I would do with him is I would actually put him in Universe 7.
This would be a NEW movie where Turles is attacking planet Salad. He hates that the Sayans are good guys in Universe 7, and so he's gonna use the Tree of Might destroy the planet, kill the vast majority of Saiyans, and he's gonna eat the fruit of might to power up. And... what if since he's ESSENTIALLY absorbing a bunch of different Ki, he triggers the Super Sayan God transformation in himself. Of course, it means Kale, Califla, Cabba, and like Goten / Trunks have to save the day.
Here's another great one. Lord Slug. I think they need to give him the Broly treatment. He needs a canon movie in Super. And he's def gonna be an interesting threat because now he can also borrow the new "orange" transformation. And this time, Goku needs Ultra Instinct to take him down.
They could also make him like an Evil Wizard. He's not just terraforming the Earth, now he wants to open up Earth's demon realm to unleash chaos because he feeds off of demon energy. That would also be an excuse to sideline Vegeta.
Meanwhile, Cooler only needs to be reconned into those two years where they were training to fight the Androids.
And then Metal Cooler can return after Majin Buu. In this new version, both Goku and Vegeta can go SSJ2, and Goku can say SSJ3 just burns too much ki.
A weird one would be Super Android 13. I think he works as a Terminator homage. (Like 3 robots just show up at a mall wanting to kill Goku) But there's NO WAY to make him work. There's no space where we can keep Goku, Vegeta, Trunks around. So i'd place him somewhere else...
The only place where he would make sense is in "The Great Saiyaman" Saga. Ya know, after the timeskip, but before the Buu Saga starts. So, it would be Teen Gohan, Goten, and Trunks (and Vegeta / Piccolo) taking him on. With Gohan going SSJ2 for the win.
(That would be great since Broly 2 is definitely on a dead timeline.)
Obviously, Bojack slots in almost completely unchanged. This is after Cell is dead. There's nothing stopping Toriyama/ Toyotaro/ Toei from saying it happened. Another WIN for Gohan.
BTW, they could also redo "Bio-Broly" and instead of being a clone of Broly, it could be a clone of Bojack. (Bio-Bojack)
Jenemba is a weird one. A big draw of the movie is seeing Goku and Vegeta have to do the Fusion. That means we'd have to add him to what is now the end of the "timeline" after the canon Broly (/SH) movie. This does mean that neither Goku or Vegeta are dead, but that doesn't matter much.
They could start off by letting the dead warriors like Pikkon and Olibu fight. (Or maybe a team of villains taking on Jenemba for time off their sentence or reincarnation, like Cell or Bojack.)
Then Jenemba reaches his final form and the path to the living world opens up, and we get the chance for Gogeta to win the day.
Finally, there's Hirudegarn. Again, he slots in without a problem after Majin Buu.
But really finally, there's one more antagonist that needs to be added to the official Canon and that is "Baby." What makes him great is the body-snatcher/ body horror aspect. He's a synthetic alien parasite.
They could change him up a little bit. So that he's not made by the Truffles, and instead he's made by the Cerealians. He was a bioweapon they weren't able to implement before they were wiped out.
It's main plan is to destroy Freezer and his empire. So, Baby starts in space until someone like Jacco accidentally takes it to Earth. It be best to make it TWO movies. One where Baby takes over, and then a last desperate band that has to take on Baby Vegeta with Ultra Ego.

i don't like how toyotaro characterises gohan
I have nothing better to do apparently so I feel like going through DBS chapter 102 and point out all the things that don't 'feel like' gohan and how I would have personally done it
Besides the fact Goku never told Gohan to keep training lol, that was Vegeta and Piccolo, my thought was that actually Gohan is more interested in hyping up Piccolo's power-up than his own. And then Piccolo does the opposite too. Each of them think the other one's new form is more impressive because they deeply respect each other.
So I'd say it'd be funnier if Goku asks about it and Gohan's like "oh, it was no big deal really, but you should see Piccolo!"
I dunno if this is Caleb Cook thing or a Toyotaro thing, but Gohan's dialogue is quite colloquial sometimes and I don't think that fits him. He's the polite guy, colloquial speech doesn't suit him. Might just be because they need to fit it all into the speech bubble so they have to shorten words.
gohan what does that mean
He seems very belittling of Goten and Trunks because they're fighting in a kind of showoffy impractical way, but I don't think that'd annoy him. It's his brother and friend and they're just fighting for fun, you'd think he'd either be more earnestly trying to teach them or just going along for the ride if they want to enjoy themselves.
Gohan sounds kind of sarcastic here, like he doesn't believe them or something, and he is not like that. I don't get this part really.
The problem with making Goten and Trunks be the goofy superheroes too is I really don't know what the joke is anymore. Gohan is already goofy. He already accepted Piccolo's naming convention for Beast, who Toriyama said is bad at names. So is Gohan saying he doesn't like Ultimate because it's a 'good' name but then Goten and Trunks are also in-universe goofs so if they came up with it wouldn't it be a bad name and it's all so confusing now
I think realistically Gohan would be thinking "if they manage that this time, this might be difficult". Especially if they can still do Super Saiyan 3, he'd probably be forced to go Beast already. But here it's like he doesn't even believe they can do it and that's so weird for him. Gohan always believes in people. He's like their in-universe hype man. Even when he's wrong.
Like I would think he'd be more disappointed than irritated and admonishing.
Why is Gohan so smug and smiling about this? I would have thought he'd be more curious about how strong Goku is, or earnest about wanting to show how strong he's gotten.
(also apparently toyotaro forgot the pupils for Beast but he's said that was an accident, it doesn't mean anything)
Maybe I have to rewatch DBS Episode 90 again, but I think I remember him having a more serious expression when he fought Goku there. I think there he took the fight more 'seriously' because he was fighting to prove himself. And also kind of proving himself...for himself, to get his confidence up.
I think a fight like this is a place where you can really try and get into Gohan's mindset and point of view. He's still kind of the 'normal guy' surrogate, and you can really lean into that by having him have insecurities and feelings about fighting Goku. He's Goku, after all, the main character and always-strongest dude. Even if Gohan has gotten stronger, it'd be cool if he's not sure if that's enough to put up a good fight against him. Or that he hasn't used Beast that often and wants to use this as a test to see what exactly he can do.
We don't have any of that right now. We don't know what either of them are thinking besides the fact they seem to be having a good time. There's no tension or stakes to the battle right now, and it makes it look pretty boring.
I guess we'll see what happens next month.

Not speaking about MasakoX but What Ifs in general: what would you like to see in a Dragonball AU?
Lol. Yeah I'm done answering questions about MasakoX's What Ifs for a while. I ain't very interested in them to begin with. I liked the other videos/series he stopped making.
As for my thoughts on a DB AU I would like to see... A story with more balance in terms of power and character usage.
I mentioned in an old post how I would make SSJ work. Saiyans need a tail in order to turn SSJ. If the tail is removed, then they revert to base similar to their Oozaru forms. But, their tail always regrows. This helps identify them as Saiyans too. Also, this would raise the stakes & allow for the non Saiyan characters to participate in battles more often. I would have the humans learn magic too since Earth is very mystical. Spells that change their aura while also giving them a speed, power, durability, stamina, or a healing perk. Imagine the humans doing Naruto hand poses to cast a spell on themselves, or announce some kind of jutsu. Different from the bukujutsu/flight. And "jutsu" means "art/technique/magic." (Also I dont know much about Naruto in case ppl think I do. I just know basic stuff.) But back to DB, magic is very powerful. So that mixed with martial arts would be a smart combination. Imagine Krillin using magic to fly super fast while on Namek instead of ki (like how Babidi uses magic to fly). Krillin would go completely undetected. Or a human character using a spell to create a protective barrier on Earth so that certain attacks wont destroy it. Or the humans using a durability spell so they can use the Kaioken without damaging their bodies. So, while Saiyans focus more on brute strength, humans focus more on ki & magic abilities. And Piccolo is somewhere in between.
Another AU I think would be fun is inspired by Injustice. Bulma creates some sort of pill that temporarily gives human characters the abilities of Saiyans. So when they take the pill before a battle, they grow in power during combat. But the effects of the pill dont last long enough for them to get a zenkai boost after the battle. And since they aren't truly Saiyans and are using science to mimic Saiyan abilities... When the human fighters take the Saiya Pill, they can't transform into Super Saiyan. Instead, they transform into False Super Saiyan. They get the golden aura & maybe their pupils would disappear. This allows for humans to have a pseudo transformation.

🦎 + Consider this one a freebie if you don't really have thoughts on this, but: Character Designs, esp. in regards to wardrobe? ( in DBZ or otherwise )
🦎 For My Sleepy Work Thoughts || Always Accepting!
[Hmmm I can't say I have any like big thoughts or probably groundbreaking opinions on it or anything. I do love good unique character design, whether that's in full body appearance for like aliens and inhuman creatures or simply in wardrobe. It makes the content more exciting and appealing to the eye and overall just more interesting than just slapping on Basic Clothes or making Another Humanoid Alien (which DB is bad at doing unfortunately but I can't say much because, even though I tried in the fic to make some more interesting aliens, I feel I could have done more BUT).
Obviously, basic clothes are necessary depending on the setting, story, etc. But like...in stuff that's meant to be fantastical, removed from our present time, or on a completely different planet or in a different realm, I don't really care to see characters wearing basic street clothes. A few examples of what I mean. Maybe this is me just not "being with the times" but I would much rather see superheroes when they're superheroing to be wearing some kind of cool costume with a neat design. And I don't know if this all that common but eh. Plain clothes superheroes (the only example that comes to mind is like a Percy Jackson type; basically someone who could be seen as a superhero but not like in the comic book sort of way if that makes sense) that aren't meant to BE THAT very specifically (i.e. Batman deciding to get rid of the costume and run around in jeans and a tee) just don't do it for me. Another example is I didn't really care for how they had the characters in Harry Potter wear street clothes while at Hogwarts. Again, a really stupid complaint (if I'd call it that), but again, we're in a fantastical setting that's meant to be different than ours with clothing that is pointed out to be very different than the Muggle style of clothing numerous times. I want to see that in practice more than I want to see the main cast wearing jeans and t-shirts I guess if that makes sense.
And now for me to be hypocritical tho. Ish. Taking DragonBall as the example, I love when they put Goku, Gohan, Vegeta (even if the dumb dad clothes the put on him in Super suck and don't suit him cough), and even Piccolo and all the others get put in "normal" outfits in their downtime. Especially because plenty of those have been iconic lmao. I guess that goes just with liek the superheroes in their down time wearing normal clothes so maybe I'm not a hypocrite for this. But I think I like it because it makes seeing them in normal clothing that isn't their fighting/standard outfit more special and fun than if the always wore street clothes? Again this is all really trivial shit for me lmao.
Now as far as like designs of inhuman or alien characters? I definitely want originality because I find it hard to believe that every alien race would just look human save for one or two features (looking at you Saiyans, even if I do love them lmao). DB probably isn't the worst about this, but considering it's the series I've got the most brain rot for, they get to be the example. They could definitely do better with character design, especially when it comes to the alien races. Like the simplest thing for them to do is not make everything bipedal. Give this alien a hundred legs and that's already more interesting for DB lmao. Give us less humanoid features in general and they would be doing better. Like all of your alien OCs are so cool and thought out (which we would definitely not get from Toriyama lol) and I know other series have interesting designs for their aliens that aren't just...human with a few spikes and a "weird" skin tone.
Long story short: while I'm not going to shit on an entire series for lackluster character design, I do appreciate it and dig originality in it.]

Ok, a post got me thinking about my dad again and I just need to get some things out.
I loved my dad. Everyone always says I take after my mom, but that’s not true. I got a lot from her, don’t get me wrong, but I think I got more from him. I got puzzles from my dad. Every Christmas you would see dad, my sister, and me all hovering over that year’s puzzle while mom and my brother opted to do anything else.
I got lord of the rings from my dad. He had this giant illustrated edition of the hobbit when I was growing up. All three of us kids brought it to school when our English class was assigned to read it. I just bought a $75 special edition of the hobbit. My friends were teasing me because I didn’t realize the price until I checked out. I couldn’t bring myself to tell them I would have paid anything because the illustrations were the same as my dad’s copy.
I got my love of tools from my dad. I was fascinated by his tools. I used to steal a screwdriver and take my toys apart and put them back together so I could be like him. He would ask me to help whenever mom bought something that needed to be assembled. He’d use those times to teach me how to use a hammer, how to identify the best tool for the job, and how to sometimes throw out the instructions because they just aren’t working. He built the most amazing things. He built a massive deck for our house. When I asked if we could try vegetable gardening, he built these great big planters so we could have tomatoes and bell peppers.
I got my love of math from him. It’s a little spooky how my career trajectory echos his. He got a business degree, I got a business degree. He majored in accounting, I minored in it. He was a banker for several years, I was a teller for several years and am now doing payroll for a bank. Is this where I thought my life would lead growing up? No, I was going to be a teacher, then an engineer, then a photojournalist, then maybe a chemical engineer. I ended up a business major because I couldn’t settle on anything. So I just kept coming back to math and accounting and numbers because I inherited his brain. Plus one of his favorite games was cribbage. Do you know how much rapid fire math is in that game? Do you know how many silly little number rhymes he had?? Fifteen two, that’s all for you. Fifteen two, fifteen four, t’ain’t no more. That might be the only time I’ve ever heard someone use that particular contraction, btw. There ain’t no more just doesn’t have the right flow.
We would binge shows and movies together. One of my favorite memories is watching John Wick with him. His als had progressed to a point t where he couldn’t safely stay home by himself. So mom would ask me to dadsit anytime she went on a trip. Mostly that just meant I was responsible for “cooking” (we ate a lot of subway that week). Somehow the topic of John Wick came up and he realized I’d never seen any of them. So three days in a row followed the routine of me getting off work, running to pick up dinner, then settling in for the next installment. We did the same with lord of the rings when I got hired at my previous job. It was our celebration. And we got through most of psych like that (although he watched ahead a couple times. I think I get my impatience from him too lol).
I got music from him. Literally actually. I have his saxophone. He played the sax and the bass guitar. I play piano, flute, piccolo, a smidge of sax, and a dash of ukulele. I grew up on stories of his time in his high school band. He was apparently part of an award winning jazz band. I don’t think I ever played with him though. Sure he showed me a couple things on the saxophone, but we really should have done a duet at some point.
I’ve noticed I have a couple of his quirks too. I stick my tongue out the same way he did when he was concentrating. I have his tendency to exaggerate, though I do try to rein that in. I’ll randomly sing things like him. Not things that remind me of songs, I’ll just sing filler words while I think. Got that from him.
Anyway, I mostly just wanted to get this down because I occasionally have this fear that I’ll forget him if I don’t record things about him somewhere. I know that’s probably not true, but also my memory is terrible. I’m afraid that one day I’ll try to think of something and all I’ll have is his name and a feeling of loss.
