This is something I learned at one of the pre-op visits for my breast reduction! My surgeon was basically I think an independent surgeon (as I guess I would imagine is common for âcosmeticâ/plastic surgeons?) and she was telling us a little bit about what to do for talking to insurance about the surgery and stuff, and she mentioned that for us going through insurance it would be at a particular hospital, but she also often did surgeries where people didnât use there insurance, and she did those at some other place, and the price she charged up front was much lower, because that was the actual cost of the surgery (and equipment and everyoneâs salaries etc.) and she had to raise the ticket price significantly when people would go through insurance, because the insurance company would negotiate that price down, and then keep some of the money. (Obviously for us and many others it still worked out to be cheaper for us out of pocket to go through insurance, but the amount she made was roughly the same even though it would look like she charged thousands more for my breast reduction than for someone not using insurance)
So, when you get those bills from your insurance after a doctors visit, and thereâs that little table that tells you, this is the cost of the visit, this is the discount we got you, this is how much we paid, this is how much you still have to pay?
That line about âwe got you this discountâ is misleading. They actually caused the provider to raise the initial cost of your care by that amount, or more, in anticipation of the insurance company refusing to pay the full amount so that they could tell you they got you a discount.
"Why does a 15-minute visit with a doctor cost 150 bucks in America???" you're gonna want to read Money-Driven Medicine, by Maggie Mahar, and probably also The Social Transformation of American Medicine, to answer that question. It is not because your doctor is a greedy bastard; your doctor does not see most of that money. It is because the system is broken to a level that is truly impressive in its dedication to making a shit ton of money for insurance company executives and shareholders.
#my doctors visits are always around 3 or 400 for me because they never get billed as physicals because I also need prescriptions filled#and I need to go in 4x a year because adderall is so heavily restricted#and my last visit was actually $700 because they needed to drug test me not even for a real reason but because at the previous visit when#they drug tested me (also for bullshit reasons- to check that I was taking my meds instead of selling them or soemthing)#it came up with a false positive for opioids. which I donât have access to or interest in and would not have been in my system#(momâs nurse friend hypothesized that maybe the poppy seeds on the wverythign bagel I probably had for breakfast that morning set it off. it#seems like thatâs a pretty common food to have and they should either warn you ahead of time about that or it shouldnât be sensitive enough#to pick that up)#and insurance was like âwe got you a $195 discountâ which is bs and âwe paid $4â which is even stupider#so now at my next virtual visit Iâm gonna have to say hey I know the answer is no because of institutionalized stigma against me that youâre#not willing to push back on but I canât fuckingn afford to keep paying $1600+ a year for what at this point is a middle man between me and a#pharmacist because Iâve been on this medication for fucking ages and all my other ones could be refilled at a yearly physical#so is there any way we could change things up somehow. and sheâs going to say no. and Iâm going to be angry and upset about it for days#back when i was at my pediatrician I had to go in every six months which was annoying but I would happily go back to that over four times a#year#but idk if the rules changed or if the rules are different for adults or if my doctor just sucks bc I brought that up early on and she was#like no this is what we do#I mean. I can technically afford it. I have the money Iâm not going into medical debt or anything. I live at home with my parents and have#very low living expenses and my checking account is limited primarily by my own standards of how much Iâve decided I want to be putting into#my savings account each paycheck. but when the biggest expense in my life is something that already frustrates me and that I know is exp too#expensive and that I feel I shouldnât have to be doing anyway and I know Iâm being treated unfairly#it just feels so much worse. having to take money out of my savings account wouldnât be the end of the world. but it feels wrongs#and I only make like $36#lmao I forgot about the commas thing.#like $36k a year so I also am aware that even though Iâm in a lucky place where Iâm stable thatâs not *that* much money and I feel like that#is how I tend to think of things. because Iâm not going to live with my parents forever and Iâm deeply aware that for most people who have#to pay a rent or a mortgage $36k is the lower end of things and a seven fucking hundred dollar doctors bill is a big fuckingn deal#for a regular fucking doctors appointment#itâs not like I fucking asked to be drug tested they said âpay us to look at your pee or elseâ#itâs all bullshit

pairing: lando norris x best friend!reader
summary: when plans with your family fall through at the last minute, lando invites you to come home with him for the holidays. (3.8k)
a/n: the big finale!!! lando is so best friends to lovers coded, i couldnât resist. does it snow in the uk in december, probably not but itâs for the plot so bear with me pls <3 happy holidays everyone!!
âYeah, of course. Yes, mum, I understand. No, Iâll be fine, I promise. Okay. Okay, I love you too. Cheers, see you when you get back.âÂ
You end the call with a heavy sigh, tossing your phone away from you on the sofa.
That was your mum on the phone, telling you that her and your father wouldnât be home for Christmas this year. Youâd planned on going home to celebrate with them like you always do, but for the first time ever in your life, it looked like you were going to be spending Christmas alone.Â
It was bound to happen sometime in your life, really. Youâre an adult now, still trying to find your place and your people in this world.Â
Speaking of your people, Lando has just made his way into McLaren hospitality, head on a swivel until his eyes land on you. He takes notice of your downtrodden demeanor immediately, marches his way over to where you are with gusto and plops down next to you, bumping his shoulder against yours.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â He asks bluntly, dark brows furrowed in concern.Â
You inhale a deep breath, forcing a smile onto your face to respond. âNothing. How was testing?âÂ
âFine. Seriously, whatâs going on? Why do you look so sad?â He demands, but not unkindly or rudely. Just simply how Lando is with you, direct and to the point. Itâs one of many ways he is around those he cares for.Â
âI was planning on going home to spend Christmas with my family, but my parents arenât going to make it home in time,â You confess. Your finger picks at the loose thread of your sweater sleeve, a welcome distraction from the lump threatening to form in your throat.Â
Lando frowns. âOh. Mâsorry to hear that. That sucks.âÂ
âYeah. Looks like Iâll be spending the holidays on my own this year.â
âWhat? No, you canât spend Christmas alone. That sounds so sad.âÂ
âIâll be fine, Lando,â You chuckle, patting his knee. It does indeed sound sad, but you wonât have Lando all worried about you when he should be celebrating with his loved ones. Heâs got a lot to celebrate this year, and you donât want your situation to take away from any of it. âDonât worry about it.âÂ
âCome spend Christmas with me.âÂ
For a moment, youâre at a loss for words. Lando is one of your best friends, sure, but joining him for something like this seems too imposing of you. Despite being close with his family, you canât do this to them so last minute. After a long year, this is their time with Lando.Â
You shake your head immediately, wrinkling your nose. âNo way. I wouldnât want to barge in on your family time.â
âCâmon, you wouldnât be! My family loves you.â He shrugs. âI mean, youâre basically an honorary Norris already at this point, and I think my sisters might love you more than they love me.âÂ
That makes you laugh. âShut up, no they donât!âÂ
âUh, yeah they do.âÂ
âOkay, maybe they do. Iâm just that easy to love.âÂ
âYeah, you are,â He says, smiling softly. Your head cocks to the side at the pure warmth in his tone, and it seems to make him snap out of whatever trance heâs in, because he gives his head a subtle shake. âSeriously, come home with me. Itâll be fun. Way more fun than just sitting around at home watching those boring home improvement shows you seem to like so much.âÂ
âHey! Those shows are fun!â You huff, swatting him on the thigh.Â
âSure they are,â He says, still unbelieving. âSo what do you say? Christmas with the Norrises, how âbout it?âÂ
You let out a breathy chuckle, nodding. âOkay. Yeah, that sounds lovely.âÂ
âMint! Iâll go let my mum know.â He beams, bouncing to his feet. âBetter let Flo and Cisca know too, theyâd kill me if I brought you round and didn't tell them ahead of time.âÂ
âLando?â You call after him. He whirls around with an arched brow, phone already in hand. âThank you.âÂ
âOf course. Iâd never let you spend the holidays alone.â Â
Looks like this Christmas might not be so bad after all.Â
-------
The first thing you hear when you climb out of the car at Landoâs familyâs house is a shout of your name.Â
Before you can even register who might be calling you, a little body crashes into your legs, arms wrapping around your knees tightly. Now you know who it is, and you grin.Â
âWhy hello, miss Mila!â You chirp, kneeling down to be at her level. She giggles loudly at the finger you boop against her nose, throwing her arms around your neck as best she can, and you lift her up onto your hip. âAre you excited for Christmas?âÂ
âChristmas!â She cheers. Lando wanders over to the two of you from the boot of the car at that moment, and the second Mila spots him, she grins even wider than youâd thought was possible. âLala!!!â She squeals, reaching out for him.Â
Lando takes her into his arms, swings her around a little bit, beaming brightly at the peals of laughter that escape her with every swing. âMy goodness, youâve grown! You might be almost as big as me now!âÂ
Landoâs brother, Oliver, emerges from around the house now with his other daughter nestled in his arms, raising his free hand in greeting as he makes his way over.Â
âGuess my brother finally gathered the nerve,â He says cheerfully, clapping Lando on the back. Lando not-so-subtly steps on Oliverâs foot, garnering a hiss of pain from the older Norris. âToâŠmake it home when itâs still bright out! Yeah, he usually doesnât come around til the girls have gone off to bed.âÂ
âItâs nice to see you too, Oliver,â You chuckle, pushing aside your confusion as you give a small wave to the toddler in her fatherâs arms. She waves back shyly. âThanks for letting me join you guys this year.âÂ
âPlease, youâre welcome here anytime,â Oliver replies, sounding more than sincere. âCâmon, letâs head inside. Mum and everyoneâll be stoked to see you.âÂ
Mila wriggles out of Landoâs arms to come hold your hand, dragging you towards the house excitedly. You don't notice Lando and Oliver dropping back, nor the hushed conversation they have that is definitely about you.Â
Much like both boys have said, the rest of their family welcomes you with open arms.
His parents tell you how good it is to see you again, and that theyâre happy youâd decided to come home with Lando, Flo and Cisca glue themselves to your side immediately to catch up with you, even little Athena starts to warm up to you the longer she watches her older sister play with you.Â
You feel right at home with all of them like you always do, and it makes you start to forget about spending your first Christmas without your own family. Though, in a way, Landoâs family is starting to feel like yours too.Â
-------
Itâs Christmas Eve and you canât sleep. Youâve been at Landoâs house a few days now and everythingâs been greatâthe food, the company. Lando.Â
Youâre used to him being a little forward with his affections towards others, because thatâs just the way he is. So when he pulls your legs over his lap while youâre watching a holiday film with the whole family, or rests his head on your shoulder during Monopoly, you donât think anything of it at first. He likes cozying up to friends and being close to them. But as the days go on, it starts to feel different this time.Â
At first you just assume itâs because he doesnât want you to feel awkward, but then you catch him staring at you a few times in a way you can only describe as pure fondness. While you're on the sofa cuddled up with Mila and Athena watching one of their shows. As you're helping Cisca figure out what to wear for her next date with her boyfriend, or helping his mum in the kitchen.Â
It could be platonic, but it feels a little too intimate to be so.Â
You donât want to think too much into it, though. It wouldnât do you any good to get your hopes up about the possibility of something more with Lando when it could just be all in your head.Â
Sitting up in bed, you scrub your hands over your face. Too many thoughts run their way through your brain for you to fall back asleep, no matter how tired you may be. You glance out the window beside you, and suddenly your attention is captured at the scene outside.Â
Itâs snowing.Â
Sure, itâs an ungodly late hour, but seeing snow makes you want to go outside. Doing your absolute best not to wake anyone up as you swing yourself out of bed and creep down the hallway, you make your way down the corridor to Landoâs bedroom.Â
You knock on his door quietly, listening for anything that could give away whether or not Lando was up. For a few seconds, there isnât a sound. Then you hear the clacking of a keyboard and the faint sound of him talking, and you know heâs awake. He probably didnât hear you knock.Â
Pushing open the door slowly, you pad into the room to see him slouched over in his gaming chair with his back towards you.
âYeah, mate, Iâm gonna tell herâno, Iâm not! Fuck off,â He says. Thereâs a lengthy pauseâwhoever heâs on call with is talking, you assume. âIâm justâIâm waiting for the right time. Like, Iâll know when it comes, wonât I?âÂ
Your heart gives an involuntary pang in your chest and you sigh, having already had enough eavesdropping on this conversation.Â
You pad towards Lando, going for a gentle tap on the shoulder. Your hand just barely touches his arm, but he jumps about a foot in the air, flinching so hard you think the poor boy mightâve given himself whiplash.
âJesus! What theâdonât sneak up on me like that!â He yelps, pushing one side of his headphones above his ear. On the screen, you can see heâs playing Tarkov again. Alway playing Tarkov instead of sleeping, that boy.Â
This time, it works out for you. Now you can drag out into the snow with you. Not that you werenât going to do it anyways even if he was asleep.
âYou couldnât hear me! What was I supposed to do?â You huff. Squinting at the other username on screen, you smile, pushing into Landoâs space to reach his microphone. âIs that Max? Hi, Max!âÂ
Landoâs voice sounds a bit strangled when he relays Maxâs response a few moments later. âHe says hi.âÂ
âWhat else did he say?âÂ
âWhat? Nothing,â He replies quickly, swallowing hard. âWhy?âÂ
âThat was such a long pause, thereâs no way he just said hi.âÂ
âWell, he did, soâŠitâs whatever. Whatâs, uh, whatâs up? Everything okay?âÂ
Now you remember what you came here for. Grinning, you bounce on the balls of your feet. âThereâs snow outside!âÂ
âNo way!â He says earnestly, cocking his head to the side. He abandons his game in favor of shuffling over to the window and peering outside, letting out a pleased little noise when he sees that it is indeed snowing out in the garden. âThatâs wicked.â Â
âWill you come outside with me?âÂ
He exhales sharply, giving an amused chuckle. âYeah, right. Iâm not going outside.âÂ
âItâll be fun!âÂ
âDonât see whatâs so fun about freezing my ass off in the cold,â He grumbles, but you can tell he just needs a little more convincing. You jut out your lower lip, giving him the pout of yours that he can never seem to withstand, and his resolve starts to crumble. âNo, donât do that. Stop that right now. Iâm not going outside with you at this time of night.âÂ
âPlease, Lan?â You plead, taking his face into your palms so he canât look away. For a split second, his gaze seems to flicker down to your lips, but before you can process the tiny movement, heâs squeezing his eyes shut.Â
âOh my god, fine,â He groans, shoulders sagging. You beam, wrapping your arms around him in a quick hug. âLet me go tell Max Iâm being held against my will and then we can go.â He crosses back over to his desk and mutters something into the microphone that you canât quite make out.Â
As youâre pulling on layers to guard yourselves from the cold, he pauses, turning to you with one shoe on. âYou didnât, erm, happen to hear anything when you came in to get me, did you?âÂ
âNo, why?âÂ
Youâre not sure why you choose to lie about what youâd overheard, something about Lando telling some girl something at the right time. He hadnât told you anything about having a crush on anyone, but then again, these past few weeks have been hectic.Â
âOh, nothing. Just wondering.â He pulls the front door open right then, suddenly seeming so eager to get outside despite his previous grievances. Something in his tone hints that it might not be as nothing as he says it is, but you wonât push.Â
You traipse out into the garden after him, making careful sure to close the door behind you so the cold doesnât seep in. Fresh powder crunches underfoot as you make your way further out.Â
The falling snow has already begun to coat everything out here in layers, and you drag your finger through it, smiling to yourself at the clean cut line it makes.
It feels like another world out here. In a life that is so often always hustle and bustle all the time, the quiet of this time of night in the countryside seems deafening, but in the best way. Peaceful can only begin to describe how you feel right now.Â
âWhy is it so fucking cold out here?â Lando grumbles, burrowing deeper into his three scarves. Along with the two jumpers and thick coat heâd shoved himself into before even stepping foot outside, he looks well freezing.
âDonât be such a grinch, Lan. Itâs snowing!âÂ
He scowls. âItâs freezing.âÂ
âCâmon, at least try to have some fun! Youâre killing my vibe, mate,â You huff, bending down to scoop up a loose handful of snow to chuck in his direction. It scatters into the air before it even makes it to him, but hey, at least heâs laughing now. You turn to say something else, but youâre immediately stopped in your tracks.Â
A snowball explodes against your forehead before you can say a thing, spraying bits of icy snow everywhere.Â
âOh fuck, Iâm sorry!â Lando yelps, nearly tripping on his own feet in his scramble towards you. Youâre too stunned by the snow dripping its way down your face to even register his words. âI wasnât aiming for your face, I swear! Are you okay?âÂ
You blink owlishly at him, at the concern and horror mixing in his expression as he takes you by the shoulders to check you out. He uses his teeth to pull off one glove, tossing it off to the side as he reaches to brush the snow from anywhere he can reach.
âFor a professional athlete, you really do have shit aim,â You huff, playful annoyance in your tone.Â
Landoâs teeth dig into his bottom lip, eyes crinkling happily at the corners as he giggles quietly. âI know. Sâterrible, innit? Good thing my job doesnât require me to do any throwing.âÂ
âGood thing,â You echo.Â
His palms cup the expanse of your cheeks, the pads of his thumbs brushing across your cold skin delicately, and heâs looking at you in that way again, the way that makes you feel like youâre the only other one in the world. Blue-green eyes like sea glass flit around your face, thick brows furrowing ever so slightly as he inches forward. Slowly, like heâs giving you a way out if what heâs about to do isnât what you want.Â
Youâre holding your breath as he gets closer, closer, closer, untilâ
Fireworks.Â
As if kissing your best friend isnât cliche enough, all you can describe of the feeling of his lips against yours is fireworks, bursting in your chest like little explosions.Â
âWaitââ You breathe, splaying a hand across Landoâs chest to push him back a bit before the kiss can go on any longer. Despite how much you want it to continue. He makes some sort of displeased noise out the back of his throat, pink lips turning down into a pout. âWhat about the other girl?âÂ
That gets him to pull back a little more, head cocking and nose scrunching in genuine confusion. âWhat other girl?âÂ
âI lied. I did hear you talking when I came into your room, you said something about waiting for the right time to tell her something. You canât be kissing me if you like someone else, Lando!â You exclaim incredulously.Â
He regards you blankly for a few seconds. Then he starts to laugh. Youâre trying to save his ass and heâs laughing at you. You scowl at him. âWhy the fuck are you laughing?âÂ
âOh! Oh, that was so good! That was gold, really,â He splutters, tears in his eyes. You swat indignantly at him and he holds up his hands in surrender, doing his best to catch his breath. âThere is no other girl, you muppet! I was talking about you.âÂ
âOh.âÂ
âYeah, oh. Guess this is the right time then, huh?â He says, chuckling nervously as he rubs at his reddened nose. âSo, here goes it. I think Iâm in love with you.âÂ
âWhy?â You ask, disbelieving. Itâs a blunt response, youâre fully aware, but you want to know.Â
âWhat dâyou mean, why? Have you met you?â He scoffs, like heâs astonished you even have the nerve to question him. âYouâre amazing. Youâre kind and funny and so smart, and you make people happyâyou make me happy, even when Iâve had the absolute shittiest day, I know everythingâll be fine as soon as you find me. You know what I need, even when I donât know what I need.âÂ
Youâre at a loss for words hearing all this now. How has Lando been in love with you all this time, with you none the wiser?Â
âWhyâve you never said anything?â You ask softly.
Lando smiles almost sadly, letting his hands drop back down to his sides. âYouâre one of my best friends. Iâd rather keep my mouth shut if telling you meant losing you. Losing what we have because you didnât feel the same way.âÂ
That, you understand. The fear of ruining your friendship with Lando is one of the reasons why youâd kept your feelings for him secret as well. So to both of you, it was better to ignore your feelings and stay this close than to let the other know and possibly lose one of the best things in your lives.Â
âWeâre idiots,â You sigh, closing your eyes.Â
âYouâre not an idiot,â He says immediately. Then he frowns. âWait, why would you be an idiot? I know I am, but why you?âÂ
You grab Lando by the collar of his puffy jacket, pulling him into a firm kiss. If heâs surprised, it only shows for a split second before heâs kissing you back fervently, drawing you flush against him by the hips. His nose against your cheek is much colder than before, but the warmth that spreads from your chest down to your toes is more than enough to remedy it.Â
âPlease tell me that means you do feel the same way,â He pants, looking entirely dazed when you pull away.Â
You raise an amused brow at him. âNo, I just kissed the living daylights out of you because I donât feel the same wayâwhat do you think?âÂ
âBest Christmas gift ever, is what I think.â He smiles warmly. Then he shivers, blowing out a sharp breath. âNow can we please go back inside? I canât feel my face anymore.âÂ
Once youâre inside and have shed your coats and shoes and anything else wet with snow, Lando nudges you towards the kitchen. âIâll make us some hot cocoa.â He murmurs, quiet so as to not wake anyone in the house. You pause, causing him to look back at you. âWhat?âÂ
âThe package kind or the real kind?âÂ
âWhat sort of question is that? The real kind, of course,â He snorts. âWith milk and everything.âÂ
âOh, you do love me!â You say gleefully.
Lando rolls his eyes playfully, giving your hand a firmer tug that has you sliding right in under his arm on your socked feet.
Despite all his moaning and groaning about being cold, heâs pleasantly warm, and you sigh, nuzzling in closer. He welcomes your closeness, dropping a kiss to the side of your head as he shuffles his way towards the pots and pans cupboard with you latched onto him, not even trying to wriggle out of your grasp.
It feels natural because youâve always been close. Though now, things have changed. Now, you can kiss him if you want to, instead of wondering what Lando would do if you did it. Youâre not just friends to each other anymore.Â
You press your lips against his quickly as heâs piling marshmallows on top of two mugs of hot cocoa, pulling back right after just to see his reaction to the impromptu kiss.
As expected, his mouth curves into a grin, dimples on full display. He flicks a marshmallow at you, and you reciprocate, tilting your chin up at him in challenge.
Soon enough, now youâre both chucking the tiny white sweets at each other, trying and failing to catch them into your mouths. The first of you to catch one of them is you, and you cheer, flinging your hands in the air.Â
âOh my god, shush, you! People are sleeping!â He breathes, lunging forward to press a hand over your mouth as youâre mid-shout.
Your eyes widen in comical realization and it makes him laugh, which makes you laugh. His hand falls from your face as you both fall apart in quiet giggles.Â
Youâre laughing because heâs laughing, heâs laughing because youâre laughing, and neither of you can stop until your sides hurt.Â
âCâmere,â He murmurs, stepping in close and sliding a hand around the back of your neck. His gaze flits all around your face, taking in the sight of you with eyes that twinkle with happiness even in the darkness of the kitchen. "Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas, Lan." You smile.
He kisses you then, long and sweet and with such gentleness that it makes your stomach do somersaults.Â
In the morning, youâll need to figure out how youâll play things with Landoâs family, and then everything after. But not now.
For now, youâll watch the snow fall outside while you snuggle up on the sofa with the boy you love and a mug of not so hot cocoa.Â
So maybe this Christmas hadnât gone exactly as youâd planned, but really, you arenât too sad about it anymore. You wouldnât have it any other way.Â

How To Get Started Making Visual Novels
Wanna make a visual novel? Or maybe you've seen games like Our Life, Blooming Panic, Doki Doki Literature Club, etc. and wanna make something like that? Good news, here's a very basic beginners guide on how to get started in renpy and what you need to know going in! Before you start, I highly recommend looking at my last post about writing a script for renpy just to make it easier on you!
LONG POST AHEAD
Obviously, our first step is downloading it from their website
thankfully, its right on the home page of their site. Follow basica program installation steps and run the program. I highly recommend pinning it to your task bar to make it easier to access.
From there, you're met with the renpy app, it's a little daunting at first but let's talk about what all these buttons are for.
Projects
This part is simple, it just lists the current projects in the chosen directory. You probably won't have any in there of your own. You should still see Tutorial and The Question!
Both of those default projects are super helpful in their own ways, i highly recommend testing out the tutorial and playing around with it just to get comfortable with some of the basics.
Create New Project
The first step to actually making your game into a game!
You'll be met with a prompt letting you know that the project is being made in English and that you can change it. You can click Continue.
From here, you'll be asked to input a project name! Put in your games title, or even a placeholder title since this Information can be changed later! (this is also the title the folder will be in your file browser, be sure to name it something you won't overlook)
Now we get to choose our resolution!
If you have no idea what to choose, go for 1920x1080! This is the standard size for most computer monitors and laptops, but it will still display with moderately decent quality on 4k monitors too!
You can choose 3840x2160 as well. This is 2x the measurements of the default, with the same ration. These dimensions are considered 4k. Keep in mind, your image files will be bigger and can cause the game to have a larger size to download.
Now we get to choose our color scheme!
Renpy has some simple default options with the 'light mode' colors being the bottom two rows, and the 'dark mode' colors being the toop two rows.
You can pick anything here, but I like to choose something that matches my projects vibes/colors better. Mostly because depending on how in depth you go with the ui, it minimizes the amount of changes I need to make later.
Click continue and give it a minute. Note: If it says "not responding" wait a moment without clicking anything. It can sometimes freeze briefly during the process.
Now we should be back at our home screen, with our new project showing. Let's talk about allll that stuff on the right now.
Open Directory
This just opens that particular folder in your local file explorer!
game - is all the game files, so your folders for images, audio, saves, and your game files like your script, screens, and more.
base - this is the folder that the game folder is inside of. You can also find the errors and log txt files in here.
images - takes you to your main images folder. This is where you wanna put all of your NON gui images, like your sprites, backgrounds, and CGs. You can create folders inside of this and still call them in the script later. EX: a folder for backgrounds , a folder for sprites for character a, a seperate folder for spirtes for character b, etc.
audio - Takes you to the default audio folder. This is empty, but you can put all your music and sound effects here!
gui - brings up the folder containing all of the default renpy gui. It's a good place to start/ reference for sizes if you want to hand draw your UI pieces like your text box!
Edit File
Simple enough, this is just where you can open your code files in whatever text/code editor you have installed.
Script.rpy - where all of your story and characters live. This is the file you'll spend most of your time in at first
Options.rpy - Contains mostly simple information, like project name and version. There aren't a ton of things in here you need to look at. There is also some lines of code that help 'archive' certain files by file type so that they can't be seen by players digging in code however. Fun if you want to hide some images in there for later or if you just dont want someone seeing how messy your files are. We've all been there
Gui.rpy - where all of the easy customization happens. Here you can change font colors, hover colors, fonts, font sizes, and then the alignment and placement of all of your text! Like your dialogue and names, the height of text buttons, etc. It more or less sets the defaults for a lot of these unless you choose to change them later.
Screens.rpy - undeniably my favorite, this is where all of the UI is laid out for the different screens in your game, like the main menu, game menu, quick menu, choice menu, etc. You can add custom screens too if you want, but I always make my own seperate file for these.
Open Project - this just opens all of those files at once in the code editor. Super handy if you make extra files like I do for certain things.
Actions
last but not least, our actions.
Navigate Script - This feature is underrated in my honest opinion, it's super handy for help debugging! In renpy you can comment with # before a line. However, if you do #TODO and type something after it, it saves it as a note! You can view these TODO's here as well as easily navigate to when certain screens are called, where different labels are (super great if your game is long, and more. It saves some scrolling.
Check Script (Lint) - also super duper handy for debugging some basic things. It also tells you your word count! But its handy for letting you know about some errors that might throw up. I like using it to look for sprites I may or may not have mispelled, because they show up in there too.
Change/Update GUI - Nifty, though once you start customizing GUI on your own, it isn't as useful. You can reset the project at any point and regenerate the image files here. This updates all those defaults we talked about earlier.
Delete Persistent - this just helps you delete any persistent data between play throughs on your end. I like to use it when making a lot of changes while testing the game, so that I can reboot the game fresh.
Force Recompile - Full disclosure, as many games as I've made and as long as I've been using Renpy, i have never used this feature. I searched to see what it does and this is the general consesus: Normally renpy tries to be smart about compiling code (creating .rpyc files) and only compiles .rpy files with changes. This is to speed up the process since compiling takes time. Sometimes you can make changes that renpy don't pick up on and therefore won't recompile. In these cases you can run force recompile to force it. Another solution (if you know what file is affected) is to delete that specific. rpyc file.
The rest of your options on this right hand side are how you make executable builds for your game that people can download to extract and play later!
Sorry gang! that was a whole lot of text obviously the last button "Launch Project" launches an uncompiled version of the project for you to play and test as you go! Hang in tight because my next post is about how to utilize github for renpy, so you can collaborate easier!

Dp x Dc AU: Danny's final Interview with Tim Drake for the Wayne Enterprise's Space Program Operation Janus Crew... Demon Twin AU.
Danny had been waiting for his offer letter from WE to be officially part of the Janus Crew. He'd done all the standard rigorous testing and passed with flying colors. He'd talked to every single head engineer and interviewed at all levels to prove that he was the man for this mission. It was as good as gold, so Danny was surprised when he got a call from the PA to Tim Drake, the CEO himself, to come in for a final interview. Just a formality and mostly just to meet the man who was going to be the poster boy for their program. Makes sense, but is unnerving, nonetheless.
The second he walks into the office space, Tam Fox seemingly does a double take, blinking a few times when he explains that he's there for a final interview. She nods and he proceeds as if nothing about that was weird.
Tim Drake has four laptops in front of him and a scattering of papers, but looking up to see Danny, he closes them all and the image of a scattered young man trying to run a Fortune 500 company is replaced with some one of deadly capability.
"Danny Fenton. Great to meet you, I appreciate you coming by today." Tim says, but Danny can see the sharks fin in the water.
"Of course, I'm excited to be part of the Crew." Danny throws back, making it clear right away that Tim needs to cut to the chase if Danny's not going to be an astronaut with WE. NASA will take him back in a heartbeat if WE is going to try and play games.
"We're excited to have you, everyone speaks of you like the next Armstrong or Aldrin. I just had a few questions, as an informality, that I wanted answered."
"I feel like I've answered every question there could be about me, but go ahead. I'm an open book."
"Great. I suppose I'll start with asking about your adoptive family, the Fentons. Were they good to you when you transitioned to their home?"
"...It's not common knowledge that I'm adopted. Mom and Dad are fine. We have a strained relationship now because of my teenage rebellion but I still go home for most holidays." Danny is on edge, but also a bit excited? How did Tim find this out?
"I see. I'm an adopted child myself, you can understand maybe why I asked. Do you have any relationship with your birth family?" Tim asks, but its clear he's asking something else. Danny calls it how he sees it.
"What are you trying to find out? I mean really, you're very polite but this doesn't have to do with my job."
"I'll cut to the chase then. Do you hold any allegiance to Ra's al Ghul or the League of Assassins?"
"Woah." Danny blinks.
"Woah as in you're surprised I found out, or Woah in surprise that you've been found out?"
"Woah as in, what the fuck, I haven't thought of his name in decades. I escaped pretty young after being abused from birth."
"That's what I needed to know. You have a sister through the Fentons, and a cousin that I suspect is a clone, any other siblings?" Tim asks, his to the point question making Danny's head spin. How the fuck did this guy know about Dani?
"How do you-"
"Any other siblings, Danny?" Tim repeats, cutting him off.
"...Yeah. I should have a twin running around out there. But if this has to do with whatever crazy bullshit he might be up to, I swear i'm not in contact with him or his family. I haven't been since I freed myself."
Tim looks like he's contemplating something, his eyes are still evaluating Danny as though he were a frog in freshman year Bio.
"I have a little brother, Danny, and it's interesting. He's not particularly fascinated by space but he likes to keep up with all the astronauts. I took it upon myself to research you once you came on the roster two years ago for this position. I know you're capable and I had no doubt that you'd be the man for the job. Then I saw your picture."
"You... saw my picture?"
"My brother watches out for Astronauts because he holds onto the hope that someone from his past might be one some day. That it might lead to their reconciliation." Tim clarifies.
Danny can't do anything but stare. No. No way.
"I told Damian not to look into the astronauts for the Janus Crew. Want to guess why?" For the first time, Tim's eyes look soft around the edges. Danny stays silent for a while, head reeling from this information.
"...Is he. Is he free?" Danny finally asks.
"He's left the league and burned all allegiance he held for them, if that's what you're asking. Came to join his dad, my adoptive father, when he was about ten. So just a few years after you made your own way out without him."
"That's... That's good. I'm glad. He's healthy?" Danny can't help himself but inquire. He'd loved his brother until it literally broke him.
"Most days. He runs an animal sanctuary, has a girlfriend and a best friend, gets along with our large family."
"Woah." Danny's near speechless again.
"I'm telling you this because... He's going to find out Friday with the press release of you being our Crew Leader. He'll see you and no doubt try to contact you. I want you to have the choice of reaching out to him before that, or at least make your peace with what you have to say to him if you don't want a relationship."
"Why?"
"Because I don't care to see my siblings hurt. Here, it's my personal line, below it is Damian's. Reach out to me if you'd like for me to plan a meeting spot, reach out to him if you'd prefer I stay out of it. I understand completely if my questions have led you to not trust me." Tim offers him a piece of paper with two phone numbers on it, Danny takes it with shaking hands.
"I... See. Okay." and then after a moment, Danny added numbly "Thanks."
Tim stands and Danny follows, they're both walking towards the door and Danny can't help but feel like he's waiting for another shoe to drop. Tim has a look in his eye like Jazz might on his birthday.
"One last thing before you go and you're officially listed as our star Astronaut: I took care of those pesky case files and lab reports for you. The white ones. It is quite literally impossible for that heinous shit to every bother you again."
"Wait, What? Why would you do that for me? You couldn't have known-"
"It's what family is for. Have a good day, Janus Crew Lead Danny."

carl grimes x fem!reader
cw: handjob, thongs, slight mean!dom!reader and sub!carl
summary: shopping for clothes should be simple, even now in the apocalypse. but when you can only find a thong in this heat you're forced to wear it, and when carl notices your straps wrapping at your waist, he about dies.
request: Carl and reader going on a run for clothes, and the only thing the reader can find that fits her is a thong, Carl can't stop thinking about it, and when he sees the waist hands peeking from her shorts while they're with the others, he gets hard and has to leave early but reader knows why and follows him;)
Maybe the Reader is more dominant in this one? :3
"this is bullshit" you huff, nail gliding on fabric after fabric, trying to find at least one item that would fit you.
"just keep looking...you'll find something soon" carl hollers from across the store, you bit your lip to keep back your remarks about how it's easy for him to say with him finding everything immediately. he didn't have to sort through thousands of crop tops to not even find a full-length shirt.
wiping the sweat off your forehead as the dry heat sinks into your open pores, looking down at the pile of shirts and dust you start to consider that crop top.
but you don't need a crop top. you need underwear, embarrassingly enough.
yeah, some shirts would be fine. but switching through 2 pairs of panties in this summer isn't an option anymore
you sign and kneel back down in front of another box, tossing mix-match socks behind your shoulder before finally seeing some thin fabric.
you freeze before reaching down, one finger holding it up as you examine the black thong
it's all they had. it's all you can get.
"found something?" shit.
"uh..yeah" you ball the little number in your palms before whipping your head back and forth looking for your bag to shove it in
"woah, what's that?" you hear him say in almost a chuckle, for the first time this summer you feel your blood run cold as you stare into the box of clothing wondering what to say
"clothes. remember?" you try and say naturally to keep it together. it's not like he'd care, it's mostly you that would care with how sexual thongs are
"well...alright. let's get going, my dads gonna freak if we take any longer" he rambles and you reach over to drop the panties in your bag when you assumed he looked away
"oh. woah"
you clench your fist tight as you know there's no getting out of this.
"was that...a thong?" carl asks, flustered
"yeah, it was. it's the only one they had." you whisper slightly while grabbing your bag and standing
he stared wide-eyed at you like he's picturing the most lewd things imaginable
you check him with your shoulder for him to snap out and with him stumbling to catch up with you. as you sped walked to the car all you could think about was just going home.
okay, this is more comfortable than you imagined.
you rest a hand on your hip as everyone packs up, they all just got here and seem to be already dying from the heat. you internally smile about how your shorts fit you today, looks aren't everything in the apocalypse but dammit wearing a thong makes you feel like it is.
anyway, the whole group is out today. and lucky carl got to test drive his way here so you know what that means. cocky. cocky. cocky.
it won't stop talking about how he was soo smooth and how even rick gave him the go-ahead to drive himself home -I think he was just as sick of hearing him brag-
as everyone started moving he kept talking to you, giving you pointers and tips because he's the all-knowing of course.
you let him have his fun but with almost an hour in you're sick of it now. you even noticed rosita side-eyeing you with a look of "really? he's still going?"
but once we made it to our location he seems to quite a bit, with boxes being moved to cars and cans being thrown into backseats we were finishing up with the first stop
maggie called out to you, pointing to a box in the corner that was seemingly forgotten, and asked if you could get it. you nodded and walked over to it just to hear footsteps following
"oh! y/n-" he goes off again and you tune out, bending over to grab it as you lift the heavyweight
you felt off and that's when you realized it was because he stopped talking. you almost spun around with a cocked brow just to see him staring at your lower stomach with the redess face you've ever seen
you almost smirk while looking down to see the hands of your thong wrapping around your waist
"carl, get over yourself" you mumbled while rolling your eyes, walking past him. with your hips swaying you smiled
sliding the box into carls truck bed you hop into the car to see him very carefully sitting down
"the fucks wrong with you?" with his hands on his lap you immediately knew the problem. good news is, you also knew how to solve it.
"seriously? from pantie straps?" you almost laugh at him, watching as he slightly squirmed from trying to hide his boner
"you can't make fun of me! do you know how hard it is for me when these summers roll around, now you're wearing thongs!" he babbles but you just reach over and palm him through his jeans, he groans out and you noticed the other cars have already left to the next location.
"fuck, we need to make this quick" you mumble before pulling him free, his cock almost red from being teased and strained so much just from his dirty mind.
his red tip oozed pre-cum as veins bulged out, you slide your thumb on his tip getting a jolt from him
"always the sensitive one" you murmured before stroking his cock, his eyes were screwed shut as your wrist works wonders
"do you know how fucking annoying you were today? tips? you think I need tips from someone who learned to drive a week ago? ya'know, I was planning to go off on you after you came into the car...looks like you had other things to worry about." your hand went faster, he mercifully bucked his hips into your hand as he whimpered and groaned
"getting worked up over some panties." you say almost through your teeth, he cries out sorrys and you feel a grin touch your lips
with one final groan, he came all over your hand, you sighed and wiped them off with a napkin nearby as you look ahead at the vacant road.
his breathing is still heavy as he tries to put himself back into his pants with shaking hands, he looked to you and you just glared at him
"wanna show me how great you can drive? or am I gonna have to blow you next?"
an: HEYYYYY YOU GUYS! I missed you so much <3 I saw this request and it was too good not to do! I'm so sorry I dip in and out, If I'm gone for like 3 months after this I'm so sorry :( I'm trying to put school first and hope you can understand <3 I love you guys so much and I hope you enjoyed this <3 mwah!

Later that day, the hospital room felt peaceful, a serene bubble away from the whirlwind of the morning. You had cleaned up, the lingering exhaustion of labor still present but softened by the warmth of your baby cradled in your arms. Jake sat beside you, his presence a steady comfort. One arm wrapped around your shoulders, while his other hand gently stroked the tiny head of your son as if trying to absorb every detail of this new life.
âCan you believe we actually did it?â you murmured, glancing up at Jake, who wore a soft smile, his eyes shining with pride.
âYeah, we did,â he replied, his voice low and filled with awe. âHeâs incredible.â
You looked down at the baby, his tiny features still scrunched from his journey into the world. âI think he looks like a little you,â you joked, grinning. âMaybe we should just call him Jake Jr.â
Jake chuckled, a deep, rich sound that filled the room. âIâm not sure Jake Jr. quite fits,â he replied, his eyes sparkling with mischief. âWhat about Jameson? You know, after my grandfather? I know we had talked about it before.â
You nodded, considering it. âJameson has a nice ring to it. We could do Jacob Jameson Seresin or Jameson Jacob Seresin. But what if we gave him a nickname? JJ could workâ
âI love it,â Jake said, leaning closer. âJJ it is. That way, he gets the family name, but he can be his own person, too.â
You smiled at the thought of your son being named after such an important figure in Jakeâs life. âJameson Jacob Seresin, but weâll call him JJ,â you said softly, testing the name on your tongue. âI think it suits him.â
Jake leaned in, brushing a tender kiss on your forehead. âYouâre going to be the best mom, you know that?â His voice was filled with warmth, and you could feel the sincerity behind his words.
âAnd youâre going to be the best dad,â you replied, your heart swelling with love.
You both glanced down at JJ, who had finally settled, his little chest rising and falling in a peaceful rhythm. Jakeâs hand moved to cup the back of your head as he pulled you closer, and you felt a wave of contentment wash over you.
âI canât wait to show him everything,â Jake said, his voice barely above a whisper. âI want to teach him how to fly, how to be brave. But most of all, I want him to know how much heâs loved.â
Tears prickled at the corners of your eyes, overwhelmed by the weight of his words and the depth of his commitment. âHe will know, Jake. Youâre already such a good dad,â you replied, feeling the bond between you grow stronger with every heartbeat.
As you settled into the moment, the three of you formed a new little family, bound by love and shared dreams. The outside world faded away, leaving just the two of you and your son, the future stretching ahead like an open sky.
* * * * *
The hospital room felt like a distant memory as you sat in the wheelchair, a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration coursing through you. JJ was bundled up in his car seat, the small bundle of joy so new and precious. You watched as Jake walked ahead of you, the epitome of proud fatherhood. He had a diaper bag slung over one shoulder, and in his other hand, he carefully held the car seat, cradling your son like the precious cargo he was.
Jakeâs strides were confident, but there was a softness in the way he moved as if he were fully aware of the fragility of the moment. He glanced back at you over his shoulder, and when your eyes met, a smile broke across his faceâone filled with joy and determination. In that instant, all your worries melted away.
This is it you thought, your heart swelling as you took in the sight of him. This wasnât how you had envisioned your life unfolding, but as you watched Jake navigate the bustling hospital corridor, you knew deep down that you wouldnât change a thing.
âReady to go home?â he called out, his voice light and teasing, though you could hear the pride lacing his words.
âMore than ready,â you replied, your smile widening.
As you made your way toward the exit, the world outside felt like a fresh start. The sun streamed in through the glass doors, illuminating the path ahead. You could see the car waiting, the backseat prepared for JJ, and a wave of excitement washed over you.
Once outside, Jake carefully secured the car seat into the base that he had installed in the backseat of the car a few weeks ago. His focus was intense, and you admired how he took this responsibility so seriously. He maneuvered the car seat with ease, securing the straps with a tenderness that made your heart flutter.
âOkay, all set!â he announced, standing back to admire his handiwork.
Jake turned to you with a soft smile. âLet me help you in.â
You nodded, feeling a rush of gratitude. As you transferred from the wheelchair to the backseat, Jake's hands gently guided your waist, ensuring you were comfortable.
âThere you go, babe,â he said, helping you settle next to JJ. His presence felt reassuring, and you smiled at him as you adjusted yourself, now sitting close to your son.
He leaned in towards you, checking on JJ with a proud look. âYou ready for this, little man?â he murmured, his finger brushing over JJâs tiny hand.
You leaned forward, watching the scene unfold before youâa proud father, ready to embrace the journey ahead. As he started the engine, he turned to you with that same radiant smile. âYou ready for this, babe?â
You nodded, feeling a surge of hope and happiness. âAbsolutely. Letâs go.â
With that, you drove off into the unknown, but this time, you felt ready to embrace every moment together as a family.
The drive home was quiet, filled with a mixture of awe and exhaustion. Jake kept glancing at you in the rearview mirror, his eyes soft as you sat beside your newborn son in the backseat. The early spring sunlight poured in through the windows, casting a warm glow over your little family as you pulled into Jakeâs driveway.
âHome sweet home,â Jake whispered, his voice filled with a mix of pride and tenderness as he parked the truck.
He quickly got out and came around to help you out of the car, his strong hands gentle as they supported you. You felt the lingering soreness from the delivery, and Jake noticed your wince, instantly shooting you a look of concern.
âTake it slow, babe,â he murmured, his hand never leaving yours as you stepped onto the driveway.
You smiled softly, appreciating his care. âIâm okay. Just still getting used to⊠everything.â
Jake grinned, leaning in to kiss your temple. âYouâve been amazing. Both of you.â
He carefully removed JJâs car seat from the base, holding the carrier in one hand while his other remained on your lower back, guiding you gently toward the house. You both stepped inside, the space suddenly feeling so much more meaningful now that your little family had grown.
âWelcome home, little man,â Jake whispered to your son as you crossed the threshold, his voice laced with emotion.
You followed him into the living room, where sunlight filtered in through the windows, casting a soft light over everything. Jake set the carrier down and knelt beside it, unbuckling the tiny straps with a gentleness that made your heart swell. He carefully lifted your son, holding him close against his chest. You could see the nervous pride in Jakeâs movements, the careful way he cradled your newborn as if the entire world was in his arms.
Jake settled onto the couch, laying back against the cushions with your son resting on his chest. His hand gently supported the babyâs back as he reached for a soft blanket and draped it over the two of them, making sure your son was comfortable and warm. The sight of Jake like thisâtender, protectiveâmade your breath catch in your throat. The somewhat hardened aviator you had once known was now a father, and seeing him like this stirred something entirely new in you.
You stood for a moment, just watching them, the two people you loved most in the world completely at peace together. Jakeâs thumb brushed across your sonâs tiny back, his eyes fixed on the babyâs small, delicate features.
âHeâs so small,â Jake whispered, a mixture of awe and disbelief in his voice.
You smiled, sitting down on the edge of the couch next to them. âHeâs perfect.â
Jake looked up at you, his eyes filled with a love that was almost overwhelming. âYou did so good, you know that?â he said quietly. âI canât believe how lucky I am. We are.â
The softness in his words brought tears to your eyes, and you leaned in, pressing a kiss to Jakeâs forehead. âWeâre a family now.â
Jakeâs hand reached out, taking yours and gently squeezing. âYeah,â he murmured, his eyes full of emotion. âAnd Iâll always be here, for both of you. I promise.â
You nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. Watching him with your son, so tender and protective, you felt a surge of love for him that was different than anything youâd felt before. This wasnât just the man you lovedâit was the father of your child. The person who would stand by both of your sides no matter what.
As the afternoon light dimmed, you curled up beside Jake on the couch, your head resting on his shoulder, the babyâs soft breathing the only sound in the room. You didnât need words in that moment. Everything you could possibly want was right here in this quiet, beautiful momentâthe love of your life, and the new life youâd created together.
* * * * *
That first night at home felt like stepping into a new worldâeverything was the same, yet completely different. The house was quiet, the only sound being the soft rustle of blankets and the occasional sigh from your newborn, JJ. After a peaceful afternoon, the day began to settle into dusk, and it was time to get JJ ready for bed.
Jake had taken the lead, gently cradling your son as he moved around the nursery, getting him changed and into his little pajamas. You watched from the doorway, a soft smile playing on your lips as Jake spoke in a low, soothing voice to the baby.
âThere we go, buddy,â Jake whispered as he fastened the last snap on JJâs onesie. âAll clean and cozy for your first night home.â
He lifted JJ carefully into his arms, cradling him close to his chest as he swayed from side to side, the motion slow and calming. You could see the concentration in Jakeâs face, the way he moved with such care and gentleness. It was a side of him that you loved seeingâa side that was still new and yet felt so natural.
Jake carried JJ over to the bassinet, gently lowering him into it as you watched from the bed. Your heart swelled, the sight of Jake as a father stirring up emotions you hadnât fully anticipated. He leaned down, brushing his lips over the babyâs forehead before whispering, âGoodnight, little man. Sleep tight.â
He turned to you with a soft smile, his eyes filled with love. âYour turn,â he teased quietly, sliding into bed beside you. He wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you close as you both lay there, watching your son drift off to sleep.
The room was bathed in soft moonlight, peaceful and quiet. For a moment, it felt like everything might stay that way.
But then, not long after youâd both drifted off, you were startled awake by the sound of JJâs soft cries filling the room. You stirred, instinctively moving to get up, but Jake was already ahead of you, his hand on your arm as he sat up.
âIâve got it,â he whispered, his voice low and reassuring. âYou rest.â
You nodded sleepily, sinking back into the pillows as Jake quietly climbed out of bed and made his way to the bassinet. You watched through half-lidded eyes as he scooped JJ up, rocking him gently as he whispered calming words. The crying began to ease, and Jakeâs rhythmic movements soon lulled your son back to sleep.
Jake settled JJ back into the bassinet, then returned to bed, sliding under the covers and pulling you close again. His warmth enveloped you, and you drifted off once more, comforted by the thought that Jake was right there, taking care of things.
But it wasnât long before the cries filled the room again. You stirred, but Jake was already on his feet, scooping JJ up with a sigh that was equal parts love and exhaustion.
He cradled your son, pacing the room as he hummed softly, but after a while, the babyâs fussing didnât let up. You heard Jake sigh again, this time with a bit of frustration as he glanced back at you.
âI think heâs hungry,â Jake said softly, his eyes filled with reluctant defeat. âI tried everything else, but thereâs only so much I can do.â
You smiled at him, your heart swelling with appreciation as you sat up in bed. âItâs okay,â you said, reaching for JJ as Jake carefully handed him to you.
The soft glow of the nightlight bathed the room in a warm, dim light as you settled JJ against you, guiding him as he began to nurse. The fussing quickly subsided, replaced by the quiet, rhythmic sound of your baby feeding. You looked down at him, marveling at how small and perfect he was, his little hands resting on your chest.
Jake sat on the edge of the bed, his eyes never leaving you as he watched the quiet, intimate moment unfold. There was a new kind of admiration in his gaze, something deep and tender that hadnât been there before. He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to your shoulder.
âYouâre amazing,â he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. âWatching you with him... I didnât think it was possible, but I think I love you even more.â
You felt a lump rise in your throat, the weight of his words sinking in. You turned your head slightly, catching his eye as he looked at you with a mixture of awe and love that took your breath away.
âI couldnât do this without you,â you whispered back, your voice just as emotional.
Jake smiled, his hand resting on your leg as he shook his head. âYouâre the best mom to him. Thereâs no one else Iâd want to be here with.â
Tears pricked at the corners of your eyes as you leaned into him, your heart so full it felt like it might burst. The night was far from easyâthere would be many more sleepless nights aheadâbut in that quiet, dimly lit room, you realized that together, you and Jake had created something truly beautiful. And no matter how hard it got, you knew youâd never have to do it alone.

Saline Thief, 3
At this moment, all Amy wished was that the nurse would speak quietly. But alas.
"Now, I know it says scheduled fill here, but it's been a while since we've seen you!" chirped the nurse Laura, as the two women walked from the waiting room.
"I've just been b-" Amy began.
"XL expander implants, 8000cc capacity! Wow" said Laura, her tone hovering between playful and concerning.
"So much room to grow, but maybe we can max you out today!" she continued.
"This is absurd" thought Amy to herself.
"Here I am, struggling to keep walking pace, my tits pumped so huge they're pulling me off balance with every step.
I don't own any bras, I can't even find a place to custom make me one.
This nurse KNOWS what I've done, why is she teasing me this way? Should I just admit it-"
Entering the room, Laura motioned for her to sit.
"Okie dokie! shirt off. Let's see what we can do today huh!" said the nurse gleefully.
Moment of truth, perhaps time to rip the bandaid off?
Surely the charade would end once her monstrously expanded breasts were exposed.
Noone can look at what I've done to myself... and let me go further.Â
These spheres I'm attached to, their tortured vein covered skin, areolas stretched as wide as a palm.
Amy had been trying to adjust as quickly as she could, but the damage from her night missions was... incalculably. Unmanageable.
She still didn't have an accurate count, but her '8k expanders' must have been closer to 30,000cc than they were 8. "Sweetie, if you don't mind me saying..." began Laura
Here it comes. I've been such an idiot. Why did I get so ahead of myself...
I should have stayed home, ghosted this place. What did I expect to happen
"You're looking GREAT for only 4500cc!Â
I know you've got your heart set on hitting your implant capacity today, but..."
UGH. I don't remember saying that. This is all her idea, she's baiting me.
Wants me to admit what I've done. To save myself.
I can't take any more filling! She knows it!
"Well. Let's not get ahead of ourselves... I can't recommend overfilling you too much, the weight could start to really affect your life you know!" said Laura, as she gently caressed Amy's orbs, either testing their elasticity or appreciating her grossly stretched skin, riddled with veins and stretch marks.
"Doubling your size today with a teeny overfill would really be pushing the limit... you're such a slight girl after all!"
The nurse causally connected the filling apparatus as she spoke, consulting the small electronic control unit in her hand every now and then, when she wasn't touching Amy's hopelessly inflated breasts, that is.
âTry to hold still Amy! Youâre wiggling all over the place. Canât you stand up still for just a moment?â chastised Laura, as her patient struggled to manage the immense burdens in her chest.
Even seated, Amy struggled to stay upright without moving, she was already exhaustedâŠ
âIâve hurt my back-â Amy tried to explain, to no avail.
Nurse Laura grinned. It wasnât malicious, but it wasnât friendly.
âYouâll have to look after your back sweetie, theyâre not going to get any lighter!
"Rest on the desk, let's get lefty up to capacity, then see how we're looking, shall we? I'll be back to check on you soon!"

Can you do a set of headcanons of Dallas with a perfectionist reader? Like someone who stresses out before a test or beats themself up when they get a bad grade (and it's not even a bad grade, it's just slightly lower then they thought they'd get.)
A/N: Oh I liked this one. I liked it a lot- thanks for the request! Sorry it took so long!
I wrote this during my anatomy class instead of paying attention, so yeah! Hope this turns out well, I hope you guys like it-
Iâm gonna do general headcanons for this one?
Iâll definitely include the scenario you gave me, but I think Iâll have more talk about this way-
In general, Dally really couldnât give less of a crap about going to school and he honestly thinks youâre kind of a weirdo for stressing out so much about the grades youâre bringing home
He just doesnât see the point to it, ya know? Like heâs basically a dropout, I bet you he never really goes to school anymore, so he really just canât wrap his head around why it gets you so dialed up
Heâs very unhelpful when it comes to your studies
Thatâs all.
Heâs just unhelpful.
When youâre studying? Heâll purposely shuffle up your papers, steal your pencils, mix up your stuff and just generally be a little nuisance
He does it cause he gets bored when youâre not paying attention to him so ya know, good luck getting yourself out of that mess with him, that behavior really isnât going anywhere anytime soon
Dalâs absolutely astounded by your grades though- all those 100s and high 90s?
Thatâs miles ahead of what he was getting when he was still in school and it seems like you do it so easily, just like getting good grades is in your nature
Which, ya know, circles back to kick you in the butt because the minute you bring home something in the low 90s, high 80s range, your world is absolutely wrecked and Dallas doesnât understand at all
When you start to go bonkahs though, and run yourself into the ground just because you got one question wrong, thatâs where Dally kind of steps in and really calls you out on it
Heâs going to say that youâre being ridiculous and he means it, he genuinely thinks that youâre being ridiculous because why does one missed question mean so much anyway??
You guys have a big argument of course, because the one thing you should never do is tell a perfectionist that they donât have to be perfect
So you guys fight and you sulk off to your respective places before comes back, not to properly apologize, but to take you out to the diner or drive-in or something as a faux apology
He still thinks you get a little bit ridiculous about your grades, but now heâs smart enough not to run his mouth off about it, he does get mad though if you refuse a date because you have to study, Dal, Iâm sorry
Insert Mr. Winston saying whatever, if youâre studying at home, Iâm just gonna sneak in your window and claim that itâs a study date
Letâs just sayâŠstudying can get veryâŠhands onâŠwhen Dally decides heâs going to crash your lesson cramming sessionsÂ
Donât think too hard about the phrase cramming sessions because I am NOT getting in trouble for that one but ya knowâŠ.heh-
ANYWAY
Dal calls you a nerd, a bookworm, a dork, a geek, but mah boy will not hesitate to throw down if someone else calls you those things
Dallas, admittedly a little bit of a bully, does not like it when other people try and mess with you, so boyâs got you covered
I can definitely see him trying to get you to skip school, especially if heâs fresh out of the cooler or reform or something and honestly? He just wants to spend time with you, and it hurts his feelings a little when youâd rather go to school
Itâs all about that perfect attendance, okay? All about that attendance record-
But maybe your last period never takes attendance anyway and maybe Dallas just so happens to be waiting outside and you just maybe get your best friend to cover for you so you can skip one class to go out with him <3
Overall?
I can see this dynamic working, at least for a little while-
Despite the fights that are bound to occur, Dallas does enjoy you being a genius and heâll brag about you to the gang, telling Darry he needs to start hanging your report cards up on that old fridge
Dallas does his best to keep you from driving yourself to burnout and Iâve got this mental scene of you trying to teach him something youâre working on and he just kind of cuts you off in the middle of talking to give you a kiss because he hasnât been listening to you for the past five minutes but his eyes have been locked on your lips and heâs pretty sure that he doesnât know the answer but he knows he wants to kiss you real bad-

be our guest
DWBD AU. When Diavolo comes over to the House of Lamentation for dinner, the demon brothers realize it would be a perfect opportunity for you to expose their horrible treatment of you.
DWBD AU masterlist here.
"Don't you dare," Lucifer pointed directly at you, causing your foot to hover just above the threshold, "take one step further."
You didn't know how he caught you trying to enter the kitchen while his attention was focused on Beel. Maybe he really did have eyes in the back of his head. "I don't mind helpingâ"
"We got this, so scram!" Mammon yelled from behind the stove. Black smoke was already wafting out from his pot.
You knew Lord Diavolo coming over for dinner would be a big deal, but you didn't think it'd be this big. The prince wanting to eat human world food wasn't too surprising; trying different cuisines was part of cultural exchange after all, and it made sense to host the meal on your home turf, so to speak.
The Avatars didn't take the news well, however. You thought they'd be thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy your cooking again, but instead of leaving all the work to you as you'd expected, they demanded detailed step-by-step instructions for whatever dishes you were planning to make and told you to stay out of the kitchen. At most, you would be allowed to take on a supervisory role, but with Lucifer refusing to even let you in past the doorway, there was only so much you could do.
"Psst, hey!" You glanced towards the nearby window to see No. 2 waving at you cheerfully. "Can you open the front door? I have reinforcements!"
To your surprise, reinforcements came in the form of seven little D's and the Lord of Time himself.
"Good afternoon. How are the preparations for tonight's meal coming along?" At Barbatos' signal, the little D's scurried into the house carrying baskets of fresh groceries.
"I've been banned from the kitchen, for some reason," you admitted, wincing when you heard Asmo's shrill scream and a loud crash. "âŠI don't think they're doing too well though."
"That won't do. My Lord sent me ahead specifically to ensure dinner goes smoothly." Barbatos rubbed his chin and hummed. "If the little D's and I were to assist you, would the preparations be completed in time?"
"Sure thing! It won't be the first time I've had to cook for such a large group, but I'll take all the help I can get!"
"Wonderful, I'll be with you in just a moment. Please excuse me."
A blink, and Barbatos was gone.
.
.
.
Things were spiraling out of control.
Mammon and Levi kept fighting over the utensils and recipes. At some point, the steps you had painstakingly written down got drenched and became illegible, forcing them to improvise.
Beel insisted on taste testing everything, taking bite after bite until plates and bowls were scraped clean. Belphie was there to keep his twin in check, but mostly ended up dozing under the counter.
Asmo refused to risk chipping his nails doing menial work and was backseat cooking behind Satan, who started burning more food out of sheer irritation. Several pots and pans had already become dented beyond repair.
Lucifer made a valiant attempt to manage his brothers, but to no avail. Even if he wasn't constantly undermining you when you tried to give instructions from the doorway, he kept trying to take over the individual tasks, insisting he could do them better. This dinner was going to make or break the exchange program and everything had to be absolutely perfect orâ
"Gentlemen," was the only warning before a blur shot through the kitchen, knocking everyone off their feet and forcibly throwing them all out. Barbatos stood over the resultant pile of limbs and dusted his gloved hands with a dangerous glint in his eyes. "We'll take over from here."
Lucifer tried to rise to his feet. "Butâ"
"Do set the table in the meantime. I trust even that should be within your capabilities?"
The butler's tone practically threatened a surprise house inspection if they didn't comply. Effectively cowed at that point, the brothers obeyed.
.
.
.
Lord Diavolo's laughter echoed all the way into the kitchen, and you grinned to yourself as his generous compliments reached your ears.
"Are you sure you don't want to join them? We can handle the rest in here," No. 2 asked.
"Nah, I'm good. I'll probably feel super out of place there anyway." You added another heap of ingredients into the boiling pot. "Did you remember to remove my plate from the table?"
"I did!" No. 5 piped up. "Did I do a good job?"
"Aww, yes you did!"
"Yayyy~!"
"Do not forget that you are our guest too, in this realm." Barbatos spoke up softly, and all the chatter from the little D's immediately fell silent. "From the way you're avoiding dining with the Avatars, it's clear we've been remiss in our hospitality."
Of course Barbatos would see through your act. After all, his own placid smile hid secrets you couldn't even begin to imagine. "Really, it's fine! I'm used to it by now. Besides, someone's gotta keep the food coming, and you guys are technically the guests here soâŠ"
The corners of the butler's lips twitched upwards. "Touché. In that case, I will personally see to it that you are rewarded for your hard work tonight. Why don't you begin by telling me your favorite pastries?"
.
.
.
Despite your exhaustion, you stood at attention when Lord Diavolo shook your hand at the end of the meal, thanking you for serving up such a scrumptious dinner. Your smile was genuine as you waved him goodbye at the front door, and you only allowed it to drop once all the castle's residents have left through a portal.
Behind you, the brothers were sweating bullets as they watched you lower your hand and just stand there, staring into the distance while their minds raced.
Did you say anything to Barbatos while you had him alone? It would have been a golden opportunity for you to air your many grievances to him; half the things the brothers had done to you would have easily seen them thrown into the royal dungeons for being such poor hosts.
You had never dared to approach Lord Diavolo yourself in spite of his friendly demeanor, partially due to Lucifer's many reminders about knowing your place. But he never expected the prince to come to you instead, and so he had rallied his brothers to ensure you wouldn't have to lift a finger tonight, a last ditch effort to persuade you to hold your tongue. So much for that plan.
"We're sorryâŠ" Beel said quietly once all of you had gone back inside. All the satisfaction from eating your cooking had faded away after seeing you emerge from the kitchen completely wiped out. He didn't need his Sin to tell you hadn't eaten anything all night.
"No you're not." The words came out before you could stop yourself. You were more tired than you thought, and your brain-to-mouth filter just wasn't working anymore. "If you were, you'd do better. All of you. But I guess that was too much to ask for."
The atmosphere around the brothers was heavy with shame and guilt. They really screwed up, didn't they? Asmo attempted to steer you towards your room. "Why don't you go and rest while we clean upâ"
"The dishes are already done. The little D's took care of thatâ"
"How about some cup noodles then?" Mammon suggested loudly. "C'mon, ya must be hungryâ"
"I'm not feeling like instant food at the momentâ"
The doorbell rang all of a sudden, freezing everybody in place. No one dared to move for fear of finding Diavolo on the other side, as unlikely as that was. But there was only one way to find out who was calling on them at this hour.
"Yo," Vorgo greeted you with a lazy salute when you opened the door. "Hope this isn't a bad time. Is the coast clear?"
"You're good. Lord Diavolo already left." Just the sight of your friend was enough to lift your spirits, and you found yourself smiling at them easily. "What's up?"
"Special delivery." The lesser demon held up several containers of food. "Figured you'd be run ragged tonight, so I thought you could use a pick-me-up. I made that casserole you like, plus a few other thingsâ"
"I love you," you blurted out before slapping a hand over your mouth.
Vorgo looked a little taken aback but recovered quickly with a laugh and flushed cheeks. "You're most welcome! Get some rest and I'll see you in class, okay?"
The smell of warm, homemade food was making your empty stomach roar loud enough to rival Beel, but you were past caring at this point. You bid Vorgo farewell and prepared to retreat to your room for some well-earned downtime.
"âŠWhy didn't you say anything to Diavolo, or Barbatos for that matter?" Satan asked just as you were about to ascend the stairs. They hadn't mentioned a word about your treatment before they departed, seemingly none the wiser about how much you had suffered under the brothers' care. "You would have gotten everything you deserved, and yetâŠ"
"I didn't think they'd care, to be honest," you shrugged. They were royalty after all, while you were just some human, and the brothers' behavior could easily be written off as demons being demons. "Even if they did, they probably wouldn't believe me."
Nobody told you Diavolo was a walking lie detector. Even if you had decided to spare them, he would have found out eventually, and then you would come to realize just how much he truly valued your well-being in his kingdom.
Lucifer sighed once you had left. "Belphie, make sureâ"
"Deep sleep, no dreams. I got it."
"Leviâ"
"I've got manga to catch up on so you won't hear a peep from my room."
Beel offered to make you breakfast the next morning, and Asmo whipped out his D.D.D. to book you an appointment for a manicure. Goodness knows you could use one after putting your hands through the wringer tonight.
Mammon was preparing a list of groceries to stock up in the kitchen while Satan volunteered to cover your lesson notes and homework for the next few days.
"Of course, that goes without question." Lucifer nodded when Satan gave him a pointed look. He would personally ensure that you had the rest of the week off from RAD. After your performance tonight, he doubted Diavolo would object to the idea.

Wind Breaker Drama CD vol. 1 â Fuurin, Memories of a Summer (Part 3 - final)
This is the last part, thanks for all the patience!
Part 1 here! Part 2 here!
Translation masterpost here!
Scene 6 â 11:46~13:42
Sakura: *stomach growls*
Ume: Thatâs a loud growl!
Sakura: Shut up! Hurry up and finish cooking it!
Ume: Well, hang on a bit! Everyone! Did you bring drinks?
Nirei: Yes! Weâve got them.
Ume: Right! Once again, thanks for coming today! Hereâs to our summer! Cheers!
All: Cheers!
Sakura: This, can we eat it yet?
Nirei: Wait, Sakura-san, thatâs still raw!
Suo: Youâre really hungry arenât you!
Tsuge: *virtuous gulping and swallowing* Yum!!! Meat is great for a tired body! I can feel my muscles celebrating!
Kiryuu: I was wondering about eating outside in such hot weather, but this is so tasty!
Hiiragi: Thereâs more coming, so eat up.
Suo: These vegetables, are they the ones that Umemiya-san planted on the rooftop?
Umemiya: You could tell! I harvested them together with Sugishita before coming today! Thanks for helping, Sugishita!
Sugishita: No, it was my pleasure.
Ume: They were all raised so well! Iâm so happy everyone gets to eat them! (t/n: I WANT TO EAT THEM TOO)
Sakura: Oi Sugishita! Donât take my meat!
Sugi: *scoffs very loudly. Like a dog*
Sakura: Donât ignore me!
Hiiragi: Thereâs still a lot so donât fight!
Ume: Yum! Eating together with everyone really makes the food taste good! Donât you think so too, Sakura?
Sakura: *blushes very loudly* Mm, well, itâs not badâŠ
Ume: Hee hee.. Hey Sakura, youâre only eating meat?! Here, this bell pepper has been perfectly grilled!
Sakura: Donât just give it to me! I donât eat vegetables! (t/n: we can shake on that Sakura bell peppers suck)
Tsuge: Oh, is this Sakuraâs virtue as well?
Suo: I think he just doesnât like it.
Ume: Eh?? But vegetables are deliciousâŠ
Suo: Sakura-kun, you also leave the vegetables with your omurice behind donât you?
Sugi: Hmph. What a brat.
Sakura: Huh?! You wanna take this outside?!
Hiiragi: Shut up and eat!
Ume: Hahaha, this is so fun!
 Scene 7 â 13:42~15:56
Suo: Step... by step⊠Going down the dimly lit corridor, there was a shadow up ahead. It feels bad, Iâm scared, the man thought as he raised his voice. âGood evening,â he said, but there was no reply.
*somebody gulps; probably Sakuraâ
Suo: Behind him, he felt a presence, and the man turned around⊠there was a woman with long hair and a face that was all d-
Nirei: HIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Sakura: Hiie! I was scared by your voice!
Hiiragi: Suo, youâre really good at ghost stories, I was starting to get a little spooked there.
Ume: Really? I canât see ghosts or spirits, so they donât come to me at all.
Suo: But if you tell stories like this, theyâll probably come! (t/n: there's a test of courage called the Hyakumonogatari, where it's said that after telling 100 ghost stories a ghost will appear.)
Tsuge: M-maybe we should stop telling themâŠ
Nirei: Iâd like to go to the toiletâŠ!
Tsuge: M-me too!!
*sound of washing hands*
Tsuge: Ahh, once itâs summer, everyone starts telling scary stories.
Nirei: Well, it does suit the season after all. (t/n: In Japan at least itâs something of a tradition to tell ghost stories in summer; itâs the same as how the beach or eating watermelon are also associated with summer)
Tsuge: Speaking of, this inn is pretty old, isnât it? (t/n: remember that this is more like an empty private house that was rented out, and not a ryokan-type situation where there are always other staff around)
Nirei: Indeed, it has character or something like that.
Tsuge: Hey Nirei-kun, why did you suddenly stop there?
Nirei: Tsugeura-san, the corridor thereâŠ
Tsuge: There? Itâs dark so I canât really see.
Nirei: Isnât there something there? A girl with long hairâŠ
Tsuge: Maybe it's another guest?
Nirei: We rented it out today right?
Tsuge: Maybe it's the staff?
Nirei: But they told us they would come only during breakfast, didnât they already go home long ago?
Nirei and Tsuge: Huh?? AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Scene 8 â 15:56~18:33
Ume: Hm, what?
Suo: Just now, wasnât that Nirei-kun and Tsugeura-kunâs voice?
Hiiragi: Iâll go take a look.
*Nirei and Tsugeura whimpering*
Hiiragi: What are you guys doing here shaking so much?
Nirei: J-j-j-just now, o-o-over there!!!
Tsuge: A woman with l-l-long h-hairâŠ!!!
Hiiragi: Huh? Woman? Hmm⊠Ah⊠*chuckles not of anguish* Umemiya⊠donât laughâŠ!
Kiryuu (I think): Speaking of⊠Sakura-chan⊠pfftâŠ
Suo: So you guys mistook Sugishita-kun for the ghost of a woman!
Sugi: *growls*
Ume: DAHAHAHHA! Thatâs a disaster!
Sakura: How did you mistake this guy for one???
*Ume and Sakura laughing (t/n: THIS IS SO CUTE)
Nirei: But the corridor was really dark!
Tsuge: And the hair was waving in the wind, like sassassa!
Kiryuu: Thatâs cos Sugi-chan has such pretty hair~
Hiiragi: I was also thinking that it was just Sugishita.
Sakura: But even so, a woman??
Sugi: HMPH *throws a pillow at Sakura*
Nirei: Sakura-san! Are you ok!
Suo: Oh! A perfect straight on hit!
Kiryuu: No matter how soft the pillow is, a hit like that has got to hurt~ (t/n: omg the way he says this line is SO CUTE)
Sakura: Yooouuuu!!! Ha! *starts throwing pillows*
Tsuge: Heâs equally vicious! Sugishita-kun, are you alright?
Suo: Sakura-kun nice shot! *claps* (t/n: THIS MAN JUST WANTS TO SEE THE WORLD BURN)
Nirei: This isnât the time to clap?!
Ume: Great! Since weâre staying over, letâs have a pillow fight! Letâs join too!
Tsuge: Sounds good! Weâre joining in!
*multiple cries of war*
Kiryuu: It seems fun, but I donât want to sweat again after just getting out of the shower~
*Kiryuu gets hit*
Kiryuu: Ow⊠Who was that just now?? Guess I have no choiceâŠ
Suo: Joining in sometimes isnât too bad too! (t/n: HE DEFINITELY THREW IT AT KIRYUU)
Nirei: If itâs like this, I have no choice but to join!
Hiiragi: Even if itâs just us, donât make too much of a racket. Oi. Are you guys listening. Tch. SHUT U- *gets hit by a pillow*
Scene 9 â 18:33~end
*very loud manly snoring*
Sakura (I think): The meat⊠is mine⊠*snores more*
Tsuge: Next⊠??? (t/n: canât hear this part)⊠will be disturbedâŠ
Nirei: Everyone has fallen asleep.
Suo: Everyone did play a lot today. Iâll be sleeping soon too. Nirei-kun, will you be sleeping soon?
Nirei: Iâll sleep after I write my diary!
Suo: I see! Good night.
Nirei: Hmm, today, I went to the beach with everyone from Boufuurin. We played watermelon splitting, had shaved ice, and the barbecue was delicious! The pillow fight was pretty intense though. So many things happened, I canât finish writing about them all. But if thereâs one thing I can say, it was that it was the best day ever!

Sad Boy Hours
Charles leclerc x reader x Max Verstappen
Genre: hurt/comfort
Summary: After Singapore 2023, Charles isn't sure he can keep up with peoples expectations.
Warnings: Charles is depressed
Notes: I just want Charles to be happy đ„Ž
Masterlist
Singapore is a long and taxing race. It's not one of Max's favorites. However, he can't help but smile because he finally got the racing challenge he'd been looking for. Something to test his skill and push him to be better than before.
When he gets out of the car, he makes a beeline straight for the Ferrari, who placed one spot ahead of him. He expected Charles to already be out of the car. Even possibly bragging that he finally placed ahead of Max.
Yet the Monegasque looks like he's not even moving. Maybe not even breathing. It's distressing to see ones lover in such a state. Max gets that gut feeling it's something to do with the team, and he has to suppress the urge to go scream at them all.
Instead, Max taps on Charles' helmet to get his attention. He's startled at first but then calms as he sees it's Max. The Dutch helps him out of the car without any words. Just gentle looks and touches that are discreet.
They go get weighed in silence. Then Max veers off the path to a secluded corner and pulls of Charles' helmet. He's met with puffy green eyes and a broken smile when he does so.
"Sharl, what happened, schat?" Max cups his face, and the tears start again. He tries to wipe them away, but the Monegasque seems to have a never-ending well of them.
"I did a bad job today. They said I needed to do better with my pace. I can't keep doing this, Max. I don't know if I should continue racing." He chokes.
"You're an amazing racer, and I know that with every ounce of my being. You may not be feeling it right now, though, so what do you say we go get our girl and go home?"
~
She'd been refraining from burning down the Ferrari garage. Sure, she's happy for Carlos, but what they did to Charles is unacceptable.
When she sees Max and Charles cone walking down the pitlane, she springs towards them. The unfortunate circum of their hidden relationship prevent her from smothering them both in love, but she still hugs the two drivers who are drenched in sweat.
She takes note of how broken Charles looks. His eyes are swollen, and his lips and hands are trembling. He looks ready to collapse at any given second. He's hurting and she hates it.
The unfortunate media duties delay their leave. Max whispers to her that she can stay with him, or at least within view of him, until they can go back to the hotel.
It feels like hours before they are tucked away in the comfort of the room. Max had managed to get back before them and was already running a bath. Until he's done, she makes work of Charles still sweaty and in clothes that can't feel nice right now. She tries to detangle his hair with a comb, and she can hear him sighing into the gentle feeling.
A few minutes later, Max pops his head out of the bathroom door. "Baths ready."
It's steamy and filled with bubbles. They both giggle at the mess Max made of the bathroom. Water already sloshed around the floor.
"Bubbles?"
"Why not bubbles? Is really the correct question here."
By the time they are done, there is more water on the floor than in the tub. They'd washed, sure, but they also decided to splash water at each other.
When they dried, they clambered into bed. Charles tucked saftley in the middle. Her and Max's arms wrapped tightly around him. For this night, he will be shielded by their protective bubble.
"You are a good driver, Charlie. No matter what anyone says. You deserve so much, and this world has been so cruel to you."
They can feel his body shaking with cries once more. Hands clinging to any part of them he can get.
"You are so loved. You've done so well. And one day, you're gonna find a team that sees all of your value just as we do."

â§Ë° cw: sfw, fluffy, friends to lovers?, gn!reader
note: here it is @alexsorsis!
"Seriously? Another one?" Even though you wanted your words to sound incredulous, deep down, you weren't the least bit surprised by Killer's carelessness.
"You know me, too lazy to dodge a few attacks." His laugh was heavy, calculated; clearly trying to defuse your anger and the lecture that was about to come. Yet, nothing happened. With a sigh, you reach out a hand towards him, waiting. Killer, still surprised, keeps his gaze fixed on you, hands in his pockets.
"Are you going to give it to me or not?" As if snapping out of a trance, Killer blinks a few times and starts taking off his coat - or what was left of it, actually. "Why don't you buy a new one? Or steal one, whatever..." With the coat in your hands now, you try to fold it without tearing more holes, some of which you had sewn shut in the past. You hear a dry chuckle, but you don't lift your gaze from the patches on the coat.
"I don't want to spend on something as boring as a coat just for it to get torn, it's easier to ask you to sew it again, gives me an excuse to visit you." Your eyes turn to him, seeing that charming smile.
"Yeah, sure." You dismiss his words, though your heart beats faster because of it.
"Don't act like that, I know you missed my visits." His soul vibrates for a moment, taking the shape of a heart for a few instants before returning to normal.
You clutch his coat against your chest, unconsciously trying to hide the pounding of your heart (not that he could hear it, of course).
"Sure, I missed you aaaall day." You were only masking the truth with drama; ironic words that concealed a bit of what you truly felt.
"Did you? Did you missed me?" Killer brings a hand to your chin, gently caressing it with his thumb. It's almost as if he's testing the limits of his actions, how close he can get before you falter.
Your lips dry for a moment; this was something you expected from Killer, yet it was unexpected that it was happening with you nonetheless. Your eyes fix on the holes that are his eyes, a void that shouldn't bring comfort. You think you saw a faint glimmer of white in those empty sockets, but as quickly as they appeared, they're gone.
The warmth of his fingertips on your face fades away, and you almost go with it, craving that newfound sensation between you two again.
"I'll come back in a few weeks to pick up the coat, don't wait up for me." His voice is low, like a secret told just for you to hear.
In the blink of an eye, he's gone, leaving you and his coat together at the threshold of your home. With a sigh, you head back inside, already knowing you have plenty of work ahead of you.
Hmm, you think, maybe I should just buy him a new coat.

HellođčI hope you write this time for the phantom troupe + and the beautiful lady hwr
https://ddarker-dreams.tumblr.com/post/720956454749749248/do-you-have-any-hcs-of-what-the-yan-genshin-boys
I really enjoyed reading the postâ€ïž
wahh thank you thank you đ i'll go ahead and write the phantom troupe's version in the same format, on a spectrum from best to worst.
best
pakunoda's fondness for you is plainly evident when your period rolls around. while she can be stern when the situation calls for it, she strikes a 'healthy' balance between earning your fear and adoration. she has a no-nonsense policy but her expectations aren't the worst, you get the sense she means it when she says she'd prefer to be sweet on you. as such, you both have this mutual understanding that lets you go out and about more than most darlings. you're thoroughly pampered through the worst of your period. she takes you to brunch, a private room for mani-pedis, to your favorite café, then back home where you both eat takeout in silk robes.
machi would wait until you take the initiative to ask for certain things (besides the obvious) so as not to overwhelm you. there's that, and she gets flustered at the thought of doting on you so obviously. will give a nod when you request certain snacks or whatever but gives no signifier she'll actually follow through. you just open the cupboard and see everything you asked for there. the few things you do around the house to retain a semblance of normalcy are taken over by her so you can take it easy. considering her cold demeanor, you might think she'd expect to you tough it out, but that isn't the case. she thinks the difference in your pain tolerance is kinda cute and won't belittle you for taking medication.
poor phinks goes from treating you like a porcelain doll to acting like you'll literally flatline if exposed to the mildest stressors, his overprotectiveness ramps up exponentially. he absolutely abhors seeing you in pain and feels so useless if your cramps have knocked you down for the count. this would be your most opportune time to attempt some manipulation if you feel up to it. exaggerating the symptoms, getting him to go on more errands than he has to.... he comes terribly close to snapping a pharmacist's neck for insisting the medication you asked for doesn't exist. you can be a little mischievous as a treat. however, he will catch on eventually if you push your luck too much. proceed wisely.
HWR reader/anastasia is one of those types who knows your period is coming up before you do. she doesn't trust those apps and calculates it herself for better accuracy. she's an absolute stickler for your health, reminding you how much water you need to drink before the day ends, 'gently' insisting when you should go to bed/wake up, and ensuring your nutritious needs are met. the woman's crazy. if you wryly comment she should become a doctor, the joke will go over her head, and she'll say that if that's what you want, she can certainly get her M.D. will actually do so if you don't tell her you were kidding. there are medical textbooks on the countertop the next day. the good news is that you're physically the healthiest you've ever been... mentally, though, is anyone's guess.
chrollo isn't awful in the material sense â you have everything you need and he won't make you beg for it or anything. (he has considered the idea, only to decide against it). it's more so that he keeps testing you. or maybe he's operating at his usual annoying levels, but with your hormones jumping ship, your patience is at suboptimal levels. witnessing him enter the room is almost enough for you to see red. if he senses the growing irritation on your part, he makes no mention of it. chrollo thinks you're absolutely precious, sitting over there in your comfy pajamas and stabbing the tasty meal he got you with a fork, wanting to complain but having no material to do so with. there's a chance he'll pinch your cheeks when your knife's out of reach.
feitan is, unsurprisingly, weird. he doesn't track your period but somehow always knows the second it starts. he's... a bit more delicate with you, in his own way. he'll try not to keep you up with the shrieks of victims since you need proper sleep, and stocks the fridge with some fresh produce instead of just premade meals. if anything gets on your sheets, he'll tell you he's good at cleaning bloodstains. in his mind, he's making a joke to lighten the mood, but from your perspective, it's rather unnerving. as knowledgeable as he is about the human body, he never attended a health class, so his knowledge of menstruation is mostly secondhand. he follows you around more than usual because he thinks the blood loss might make you pass out, since that's how it normally works. please don't correct him on this because he hates feeling embarrassed.
shalnark somehow becomes infinitely worse in this time when you're not at your best. which says a lot, because he's already grating to begin with. you didn't realize there was another layer you hadn't been exposed to yet. he's this pathogen that continues mutating whenever you think you've built up a resistance. he'll loudly complain that you're being ungrateful if you wordlessly grab the hygiene products from him, instead of acting like he braved hades as orpheus did to rescue eurydice. his position remains unmoved even if you dryly remind him he literally only walked three minutes to a convenience store. he's a bit disappointed you aren't more cuddly and needy, but makes up for it by entertaining himself with your volatile reactions.
worst

Sweet & Salty
I'm feeling a bit sad today so wanted some comfort... Sebastian x (afab) reader, Stardew Valley, Fluffity fluff Warnings: Mention of recreational drug use
-
Itâs been a day. Youâd sat down heavily on your porch steps, trying to keep the tears at bay. You should probably go mope in your bed, instead of staring at the land that is causing you so much distress. Despite your carefully placed scarecrow, you mustâve miscalculated the distance because the crows have still had a go at your most recent plantings and thatâs hard-earned money down the drain - again. Youâve been here two months now and, surely, by now you should know better. The farm has been somewhat transformed since you arrived - a mass of weeds, stone and dead branches - but itâs nowhere near how you remember it in your grandpaâs heyday. He wouldâve never made such a rudimentary error in his scarecrow placement.
Some of the fences around your crop patches have started to erode too â it wonât be long until they need replaced, but youâre trying to save up your wood supplies to put in a coop from Robyn. You desperately want to add chickens to the farm as eggs would be steady income â or at least you reckon â but you also donât want them pecking at your crops alongside the crows, so having a fence seems important too. Your endless to-do list swirls around your head again. Whyâs everything so hard?
It's not just your failings on the farm on your mind, but also your lack at making any real friends around here. Shane glared at you this morning as he headed off to work. Thatâs not unusual, despite your best efforts of a smile and a friendly greeting. Then Haley looked you up and down, judging your dirty dungarees. Youâd only popped into town to get some seeds from Pierreâs. It didnât make sense to get changed⊠Elliott is sweet but locked away in his cabin most of the time, Emily in her own little world⊠Sebastian, Sam and Abigail have invited you to play pool with them, but theyâre such a tight-knit group and you always feel like youâre missing out on the joke, especially when you were partnered up with Sebastian. Heâd been teaching you how to hold the cue correctly, leaning over you, his breath tickling your ear. Sam and Abigail kept nudging each other and whispering, but you couldnât catch what about and it was clear Sebastian was becoming irritated. Youâd begun to think they were making fun of your abysmal pool skills.
Ugh. Your emotions are a rollercoaster and the twisting pain in your stomach reminds you why â stupid period. It emerged with a vengeance this morning. It had stopped in your last months of JoJo Corp. There was no chance you were pregnant, your last intimate relationship fizzling out a year previously, though youâd taken tests just to be sure. The doctor in Zuzu City said you were stressed, burnt out⊠that it would return once you were feeling better in yourself. So why had it returned now, of all times? You feel more stressed and burnt out than ever before, regretting ever moving here. Why did you think you could become a farmerâŠ?!
The barrier finally breaks and you let out a sob, hugging your knees.
To your shame, thereâs a scuffing footstep and your heart stops as you look up, worried whoâs seen your breakdown.
âSebastian?â You sniff. Youâre tempted to rub the tears from your cheeks but maybe he hasnât noticed in the evening light. The black-haired man is standing there looking sheepish, a brown paper bag from Pierreâs clutched in his hands.
âEr, heyâŠâ Heâs not meeting your eyes. Poor boy probably wants to run. âSorry, I⊠I was just leaving Samâs and I didnât want to go through town and see everyone, so I thought Iâd take the scenic route back home through your farmâŠâ
âOh.â You mumble, waving him on. âThatâs okay. Go ahead.â
He takes a step as if to go on his way, but then hesitates. âAre⊠Are you okay?â
âY-yeah,â you plaster a smile on, which youâre sure makes you look ridiculous as the stupid tears are still flowing. âIâm just being silly. Donât let me keep you.â
He stares at you for a moment, before a sympathetic smile graces his lips. âYouâre a terrible liar, you know?â
âIâm not ly- Ow!â You flinch as your stomach cramps terribly and you squeeze your arms around it, hoping in some way it might alleviate the pain.
Sebastian is suddenly at your side â the paper bag from Pierreâs dropped to the ground. Heâs kneeling down on the first porch step with a frown on his face. âWhoa, are you hurt? I can get HarveyâŠâ His hand hovers over your arm,
âNo, honestly, Iâm fineâŠâ You try and wave him off again with one hand, the other arm still wrapped around your stomach.
He stares at you, a raised eyebrow. He seems to be putting the clues together â the wincing, clutching your stomach, the tears⊠He nods, making up his mind and gets to his feet, picking up the discarded bag from Pierreâs as he does so.
âCome on, letâs get you inside.â He offers you his free hand.
âThank you, but Iâll be okay. You get on homeâŠâ
âFarmer, I know Iâm probably not the person you want to see right now, but let me help you out, okay? I canât go home and just leave crying on your porch.â He waves his offered hand again. You look at Sebastian, hesitantly. He looks genuine, at least, but thereâs something a little off about him tonight⊠Heck, youâve already made a fool of yourself enough, so whatâs one more thing?
This time you accept his hand and he easily pulls you to your feet and leads you up to your door. He opens it â youâd easily adapted to the habit of leaving the front door unlocked since moving to Pelican Valley.
You go to open your mouth, to tell Sebastian thank you, but he can go now. Youâre inside, youâll go to bed and pretend this never happened.
âSit down.â He orders, pointing at your bed. âYou like hot chocolate, right?â You wonder how he knows that, how he knows you have a stash. Had you mentioned it at the saloon before? âIâll make you a cup.â
âBut you donât know whereâŠâ
âIâll find it. Sit!â He pushes you gently towards the bed and you do sit, keeping a wary eye. To be honest, it is quite easy to find your cups and kettle. Robyn had advertised an extension to you but you donât even want to think about the price and the materials needed. For now â perhaps even for the rest of your life - youâve got a cupboard filled with crockery and silverware. The fireâs roaring away, youâre thankful youâd lit it earlier to try and make it cosy ahead of going to bed later on. The cabin always had a slight chill at night. Sebastian retrieves a mug and spoon, scooping the hot chocolate powder into the mug, fills the kettle with water from the jug you keep besides the cupboard, before taking it over to the fire to heat.
âDo you have a hot water bottle?â He asks over his shoulder.
âHuh?â
âHot water bottle.â He enunciates.
âY-yeah, I think itâs under my bed. Let meâŠâ Before you can bend down, he drops to his knees and Sebastian is now crawling under the bedframe to retrieve it. You pull your legs up off the floor to the bed, not sure what to say.
He reverses back out, holding the fluffy hot water bottle in the air triumphantly, and gets back to his feet. âFinally, where do you keep the snacks?â
âI donât have any. Sorry, I wasnât really expecting to entertain.â
âNot for me,â a chuckle â it sounds a little odd coming from him - â..for you!â
âFor me?â Heâs acting so weird.
But heâs not listening, already rummaging around the brown bag from Pierreâs. He walks over to the sofa and empties the contents besides you â thereâs a couple of packs of chips, cookies and candy. âTa-da!â
You look at the assembled junk food and back up at the black-haired man, noticing his blood-shot eyes.
âYouâre high.â
Sebastian laughs again, rubbing the back of his head. âGuilty. Is that a problem?â
âNo, it just⊠explains a lot.â You wince again as the kettle on the fire whistles. Sebastian grabs the mitt you keep nearby for that exact purpose and places it on his hand, removing the kettle from the fire and placing it down on the hearth. Methodically, he pours some hot water in the hot water bottle, tightening the cap, before pouring some in in the cup he retrieved, stirring the hot chocolate powder until it dissolves. Once he seems happy with his work, he brings the two over to you on the bed.
âOkay, since you worked out my thing, itâs my turn. Time of the month, right?â He flops down next to you on the bed, ripping open a bag of chips. âMy sympathies.â It feels surreal as he holds the bag towards you and you take a handful â maybe junk food would make you feel better, and the warmth of the hot water bottle is soothing too now against your sore tummy.
The only sound for a few moments is the rustle of the chip package and the crunching of said chips. You take a sip of hot chocolate, probably a weird combination at that moment in time, but itâs working.
âSebastianâŠâ
âMm?â Youâve caught him with his mouth full.
âHow are you so good at this?â
âErmâŠâ He swallows. âWell, I guess cos I have a sister and a mom⊠and a friend named Abigail.â He replies in a teasing tone. âMaru and Abi usually just get super pissy though. Momâs the crier.â Sebastian leans forward and grabs the blanket off the end of your bed, throwing it over the both of your laps in a smooth motion. Who knew he could turn into a right chatterbox? âWanna watch some TV?â He picks up the remote control and turns it on without waiting for a response, flipping through the channels. âDo you have a preference? Nothing deters Abi from horror, Mom and Maru go chick-flick madâŠâ
You burst into tears again.
âWhoa, okay, no TV! Thatâs fair too.â
âN-no, itâs n-not that.â You let out a shuddering breath. âWhy are you being so nice?â
âBecause weâre friendsâŠ?â
âNo, everyone hates me here.â You know youâre being irrational now, but the floodgates have well and truly opened.
âCome on, you know thatâs not exactly true.â His face looks serious now.
âIt is. I donât know what I was thinking â I worked in customer support, why did I think I could farm the land? Iâm going to be broke by the end of winter if I lose another batch of crops and this town is so tight-knit that theyâre never going to like me being here.â
âI like you being here.â
âNo, youâre just saying that because you feel sorry for me.â You go to take another handful of chips, but he snatches the bag out of your reach indignantly.
âI am not.â
âYou are.â You clip back.
Sebastian lets out a huff in frustration and he acts before he can even consider the consequences. He puts a hand on the side of your face, turning it slightly and presses a gentle kiss on your lips for a moment or two, immediately causing your tears to cease.
âWould I kiss you if I didnât like you?â
âIâŠâ You donât have any words.
He swipes his tongue over his lips. âMm, salty. Thatâs not how I expected our first kiss to go, Iâll be honest.â
âOur first kiss?â Your face is on fire. It has to be on fire, why else would it feel so hot?
âYeah, well, I told you I like you, didnât I?â He grins, before it drops. âThough Iâve just realized that you probably donât like me like that, Iâm high, and now Iâve made this a hundred times wor-âŠâ
You cut him off, caressing his lips with your own for a moment.
âNo. I like you too.â
âWell, thatâs that settled, then, isnât it?â He leans back, a smug look on his face before he grabs the packet of candy. âShall we see what a sweet kiss tastes like next?â

Chapter 15: Baggage
âSorry about your dinner plans.â Rook murmured as Lucanis fell in step beside her. âI can make you dinner any time,â he said with a grin. âNever apologize for ending a meal early to kill Venatori.â âAfter what they did to you and Spite, to Neve and the Shadow Dragons, to MinrathousâŠâ Rook reached down and squeezed his hand. âI intend to cleanse Tevinter of every single one.â WANT TO WATCH ROOK KILL . AND THEN- Lucanisâ skin heated as she let go of his hand, forging ahead to give directives. He kept a careful distance as Spite ranted and raved in his mind about all the things he could do to Rook, some things he wasnât even certain he knew how to doâŠ
Pairing: Lucanis x Fem Rook/OFC x Spite???
Summary: Fiamma recalls her final night at Villa Dellamorte, Lucanis uses food to show appreciation while Spite would prefer other methods, Rook does her best to stomach an encounter with the Venatori while rescuing kidnapped Dalish, and Solas becomes suspiciously cooperative.
Word count: 3.8k
Things of note/warnings: 18+ fic, MDNI! Blood of Arlathan quest. warnings: ritual/innocent animal sacrifice, mild sexually/physically aggressive Illario, horny Spite, yearning (but oblivious) Lucanis, Solas. Please read on AO3 if you need to track warnings, they will be inevitably detailed better there (or just want to be real sweet and give me hits/kudos/comments).
âââ âčâ±â€â°âč âââ
As Fiamma sorted through Caterinaâs mail with gloved hands, her fingertips hesitated over an envelope bearing no Crow letterhead or seal. Unfamiliar penmanship scrawled her name in dark ink, and while Viago would immediately suspect an attempted poisoning, she found herself slipping off her gloves, brow furrowing as she deposited the rest of the mail on the kitchen counter.
No one outside of the Crows should have any knowledge of her residence at the villa, yet someone had known to send correspondence here. Theyâd also known that if her mail went to Viagoâs, heâd snoop. All the mail sent to the villa passed through Fiamma first. The sender intended for her to get her hands on it without intervention.
Lucanis had been off for some time. Perhaps he wanted a message to get to his grandmother discreetly? Or perhaps it was a trap laid by her cousin, testing how she was exercising caution these days. With a frown, she slipped a knife from her waistband and sliced underneath the wax seal, anyway.Â
Hey kid, You might not remember us little people after single-handedly taking down 20 Antaam, but you left an impression on me I canât seem to shake. Iâm working on looking for an old friend whoâs gotten themselves into some pretty deep shit. I could use someone with your skill set and grit to help me find him and, maybe, beat some sense into him. If youâre up for the job, and things arenât too cushy where youâre at, you can find me every evening for the next ten-day at the Lamplighter in Minrathous. Look for the guy with a loud mouth and a chessboard. -VarricÂ
Varric. One of the prisoners she freed the night she ruined an entire Crow operation - the very misstep that landed her here at Villa Dellamorte. His proposition wasnât a new one - heâd made the same offer the night she rescued him, but Viago hauled her off before she could even consider it. Undoubtedly, Varric had powerful allies and discreet surveillance on her. She was unnerved that she hadnât noticed. Though she found herself somewhat impressed. Intrigued, even.
Fiamma folded the letter and tucked it into her pocket, setting a kettle on the stove as she continued tending to her evening duties. While the water for Caterinaâs evening tea boiled, she contemplated Varricâs offer. Viago had sidelined her for three full moons now, with no promise of letting her return home, or to her own contracts anytime soon. In that period, Illario had become more insufferable, more forward, and more tormenting. After Lucanis departed for a prolonged contract last week, Illario had formed a habit of returning home drunk every night, melancholy and distraught, howling belligerently outside her door to be let in. If the villa werenât so large, and Fiammaâs chambers werenât in the opposite wing, Caterina would have caned him for making so much noise. It seemed his luck was in his grandmotherâs declining hearing.Â
She shook her head, preparing a cup of tea and arranging it on a bed tray alongside the rest of Caterinaâs mail. Carrying it up the stairs, she wound through long hallways and several bare rooms. Cloth draped so much of the villaâs furniture to protect it from dust that she often felt surrounded by ghosts. In many ways, she was. Caterina had watched her entire family die, save her two remaining grandchildren. What joy was left inside these walls? Why decorate a space better left vacant, much like the unmarked graves near the rose garden?Â
The First Talon was in a rocking chair before the fire when Fiamma knocked on her bedroom door. Caterina never could quite sit still. Even at rest, she was restless. Normal people rocked their grandbabies to sleep, but she raised hers to be killers. Good ones at that. The back and forth of her chair was meant to soothe her own worry.Â
âLots of mail today.â Fiamma said, setting the tray on a desk near the balcony. The old woman glanced at her, the glimmer of hope in her eyes betraying her mask of indifference.Â
âAnything from Lucanis?â
âAre you expecting word from him? I could send-â
âIâll handle it.â Caterina waved, cutting her off. âLeave me.â
Typically, the two would exchange a few teasing comments or Caterina would gloat about Lucanisâ most recent accomplishment (or how Illario had most recently vexed her), but Fiamma knew better than to pry. Caterina was prone to sour moods, and where she came from, dismissal was just as good as praise most of the time. After all, to be noticed often meant death in her line of work.
With a polite dip of her chin, she backed out of the room and closed the door. Absentmindedly, her hand returned to her pocket, brushing against the edge of the folded parchment there. The click of her boots echoed against the marble as she walked down the dimly lit corridor to her room. It would be unconscionable to leave Caterina now. Once Lucanisâ contract in Minrathous was finished, sheâd take her leave in the night. But surely heâd return soon. What harm was there in leaving her with Illario for a few days? A lead assassin was more than capable of fending for herselfâŠ
She could barely count the steps left to her door when she heard something behind her, turning and preparing for an ambush. A small gasp escaped her as her back hit the wall, Illarioâs face coming only a breath from her own. So drunk she could smell the alcohol on his skin, she turned her head to the side and wrinkled her nose.Â
âFiammettaâŠdonât tell me youâre avoiding me?â Illario slurred, clumsily dragging a hand down her cheek.Â
âGo to bed.â She braced her palms on his chest to create distance between them.Â
âNot without you.â He took her by the wrists and pressed his mouth sloppily against the corner of her own. Â
âYou pig!â She shoved him off, spitting and wiping her lips with her sleeve.Â
âHow long will we do this dance, Fi?â Illario asked in a sultry voice.Â
âAs long as it takes for you to get it through your head that the kiss before was a thank you, not an oath of my devotion.â
Illario narrowed his eyes. âThereâs someone else, isnât there?â
âIs it so hard to fathom that I just donât want you?âÂ
âNo, no, come on. Who is it? You and Teia have some secrets that I should know about?â He leaned in closer. âWhat about my cousin? Heâs sweet on you, I can tell.â
âListen to yourself.â Fiamma sneered. âYou just canât believe I would say no to you unless I was saying yes to someone else.â
Illario stumbled into her, pulling her closer. âLucanis is inexperienced.â He whispered against the shell of her ear, âYou want me, someone who can show you the ropes-âÂ
Fiamma instinctively reeled back and decked him square in the jaw, her knuckles grazing his bottom teeth. With a hiss of pain, she recoiled, shaking the impact from her fist as he held his chin, opening his mouth wide to check the joint.Â
âMaybe I deserved that one.â He mumbled, wiping at his bloodied lip.Â
Before the exchange could carry on another moment, Fiamma wrenched the doors of her bedroom open and slammed them shut behind her, turning the lock and sliding her sword through the handles for extra security.Â
âI didnât stand a chance, did I?â Illario asked through the door as his body audibly slumped against it.Â
Ignoring him, she pulled a bag from under the bed. When she first arrived, Fiamma never fully unpacked. Her own way of keeping one foot out the door, as De Rivas always did. She swept the room, gathering her remaining belongings and throwing them inside. For good measure, she snatched a couple of offerings from the guest wardrobe. Caterina wouldnât miss them. Though she might miss her . That wasnât Fiammaâs problem anymore, though. Â
âIâve done terrible things, FiammettaâŠâ Illarioâs muffled voice cried. âBut I had toâŠâ
With a heavy sigh, Fiamma hoisted her pack onto her shoulder, retrieved her sword from the door, and opened her bedroom window. No longer willing to entertain another night of self-pitying theatrics, she launched herself over the ledge, scaling a trellis to the gardens and sneaking through the hidden passage across the courtyard.Â
By morning, sheâd secured a spot on a ship to Minrathous, to search for a man with a loud mouth and a chessboard. With a brief pang of guilt, she wondered who would bring Caterina her morning coffee.Â
âââ âčâ±â€â°âč âââ
Rook found Viago poised over the kitchen counter, precariously refilling his toxin vials. Framed by the glass balcony doors, the setting sun glowed over the city skyline behind him, turning the den a faint orange. Her cousin glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, decanting a clear liquid into an empty container.Â
âYour friends tired of hovering by your bedside and returned home.â
Rook took a seat, watching him work. âTeia too?â
âShe had work to do at the casino. She left once I assured her youâd live.â
Neither of them spoke for several minutes as Viago corked a glass cylinder and nestled it inside his case with care. He snapped it shut and braced his palms on the counter, staring at the stone surface.
âGo back to your Lighthouse. Iâll keep an eye on Illario and update you when I know more. Once you go through that eluvian of yours, Iâm facing it towards the wall.âÂ
âWhat if I need you?â
âLucanis seems more than eager to make you his problem. Let him carry the burden for a little while.â
Rook buried her reaction to his disappointment deep within herself. âWhat makes you say that?â
âBecause he was the last to leave and keeps reappearing through that damned mirror every hour to check in.â Viago stood up straight and took off towards his room without sparing her a second look.Â
âWhatever is going on between the two of you, keep it out of my house.â
âââ âčâ±â€â°âč âââ
AMBER. AND HONEY! ROOK. CLOSE . Â
Lucanis glanced up just before she opened the kitchen doors. Relief and another potent emotion, something akin to the rush just before an assassination, coursed through his veins.Â
âRook! Youâre back.â He breathed, lifting the pasta cooking on the stovetop off the flame and setting it aside to cool. âHow are you feeling?â
âWell rested.â She crossed the room as he wiped his hands on his apron, discarding it on a nearby chair. As she joined him near the stove, his eyes met hers, and he forced a smile, feeling a bit dazed. He turned around quickly, twirling a forkful of pasta in the pan and offering her a bite.Â
âCome here, try something for me.âÂ
One brow arched, she held his gaze, lips dragging down the metal prongs as she allowed him to feed her a mouthful. Chewing thoughtfully, she threw her head back with a moan. Lucanis watched her features attentively, assessing what the dish might need based on her reaction. Â
OTHER WAYS TO MAKE HER MOAN, LUCANIS. BETTER WAYS. Â
He shoveled a forkful of hot pasta into his own mouth, as if he could silence Spite by burning his own tongue.Â
âIâm trying something new.â The noodles scalded his throat as he swallowed them whole. âThe trick is in the pasta waterâŠâ He returned his attention to dinner, dividing it amongst an assortment of plates on the counter.Â
âYouâre in a surprisingly cheerful mood today.â Rook snuck a fork from the counter and began eating directly out of the pan.Â
âIâm cautiously optimistic about Caterina, and I wanted to do something nice for you, show my appreciation for all your helpâŠâ He snatched the fork from her grasp. âSave your appetite. Thereâs a tort in the oven, too.âÂ
Rook smiled, and the warmth of her brown irises brought out by the light of the fireplace. âDid you do all this for me, Lucanis?â
âThereâs plenty to share.â Tension grew in his chest, a sensation of static rising in his throat. âButâŠI did make it with you in mind.â
âYou didnât have to do that.âÂ
âYes, I did,â He said matter-of-factly, shoving his hands in his pockets and averting his eyes. âI still havenât found a way to apologize for everything, andâŠâ
âIâm the one who owes you an apology, Lucanis.â She said, reaching for his wrists. âI should have listened to you. Should have told you my plans, never should haveâŠâ
ROOK. TOUCHING. US. DO IT BACK! Â
Lucanis let her tug him closer, blinking in surprise as she flung her arms around his neck. One hand fell to her waist, while the other found her hip.
âYou and me? Weâre good, Rook.â He said, tearing his attention away from her and returning to the stove, wordlessly plating their meal as Rook set the table. She brushed past him; filling a cup of coffee for each of them before settling into her seat. It was wonderfully domestic, and he welcomed the distraction from the trouble that waited for them in Treviso. It would be hard to trust anyone again, but after his moment with Rook yesterday, heâd unveiled a trust in her heâd never allowed himself to have in anyone. Â
The others soon arrived, Bellara and Neve bringing news of kidnapped Dalish, taken by Venatori, for a ritual sacrifice. A pang of disappointment hit Lucanis as he realized their brief respite from the terror of the gods would soon be overâŠand the tort heâd labored over all afternoon would likely go untouched.Â
âThe gods will want more power,â Bellara said, picking at her food. âThey wonât waste any time getting it.â
A phantom scratch came from behind Lucanisâ eyeballs at the mention of blood magic.Â
âThen we strike while theyâre weak.â He lowered his fork, looking up from his half-finished plate and holding Rookâs gaze. She set her mouth in a line with a firm nod.Â
âHeâs right.â She said, pushing up from her seat. The others followed suit, departing in the direction of the eluvian.
âSorry about your dinner plans.â Rook murmured as Lucanis fell in step beside her.
âI can make you dinner any time,â he said with a grin. âNever apologize for ending a meal early to kill Venatori.â
âAfter what they did to you and Spite, to Neve and the Shadow Dragons, to MinrathousâŠâ Rook reached down and squeezed his hand. âI intend to cleanse Tevinter of every single one.â
WANT TO WATCH ROOK KILL . AND THEN-
Lucanisâ skin heated as she let go of his hand, forging ahead to give directives. He kept a careful distance as Spite ranted and raved in his mind about all the things he could do to Rook, some things he wasnât even certain he knew how to doâŠ
âââ âčâ±â€â°âč âââ
Safer to venture into such a large gathering of Venatori in small groups, Neve, Lucanis, and Rook opted to move in the open, disguised, while the others went through the trees with the Veil Jumpers.Â
âThis robe stinks of Venatori. It makes my eyeballs itch.âÂ
Lucanis stood with his arms crossed as he waited for Neve to reach the opposite end of the zip line. White fog seeped up from the deep canyon before them, concealing several roaring waterfalls in the distance. Rook bit her lip as she examined the large gap between them and the opposite bank.Â
âIf youâre not too uncomfortableâŠI could use a favor.âÂ
Lucanis raised an eyebrow as she held up her palms. The injuries she sustained from her escape from the villa were still red and inflamed as she tugged a pair of thick gloves over them with a grimace.Â
Lucanis smirked and offered her his back. âNeed a lift?â
âYou sure you can carry both of us?â She asked with some uncertainty, âI can catch up with the others ifâŠâ
Lucanis scoffed. âI can handle you.âÂ
âRescued twice in less than a fortnight. Iâm a lucky girl.â Rookâs arms encircled his middle, and she rested her chin on his shoulder, hiking her legs up around his waist. âAre you sure about this?â
He stiffened, tightening his grip on the handles. âIâll keep my reservations to myself until we reach the other side.â
Lucanis kicked off the ground, and they soared over the canyon, Rookâs stomach plummeting as she looked at the drop below. With her arms locked tightly around Lucanisâ chest, she feared heâd suffocate and pass out, sending them both to their deaths amongst the jagged rocks below. Eyes squeezed shut, she became attuned to the scent of his shaving oil lingering on his neck as she buried her face there. The telltale jolt of them hitting the end of the zipline ripped every thought from her mind and she released a held breath, letting her shaking legs detach themselves from around Lucanis. As her boots hit solid ground, she swallowed hard to avoid retching.
âTook you long enough,â Neve said, inclining her head towards the Venatori camp. âCome on.âÂ
They weaved through a sea of Red Cloaks and excited chatter. Rook caught the sound of her own name a few times, resisting the urge to turn her head towards it.Â
âYouâre popular.â Neve murmured.Â
âNot comforting.â Rook replied. From her peripheral, she watched Lucanis scan the crowd, hands flexing at his sides.Â
âTheyâre going to bleed a Dalish deer!â A nearby Venatori squealed.Â
Rookâs throat tightened as she recalled the disposition of the gentle creature sheâd encountered with Assan and Davrin. âTheyâre going after Halla?â
She turned to a platform where the creature was drug forward on a rope, weak and struggling to resist. Could it be the same one from before?Â
Lucanis reached out and caught her around the waist as she jolted forward, bringing his lips to her ear.Â
âWe canât do anything that will draw attention, Rook.â He warned in a low voice. Tears stung her eyes as she realized he was right. Lucanis discreetly reached for her hand, lacing his fingers through hers.Â
âYou donât have to watch this,â Neve said as the Halla bleated in terror, but Rook couldnât tear her gaze away, no matter how badly she wanted to. She squeezed Lucanisâ hand, fingernails digging into his skin unintentionally. When she noticed and tried to relax her grip, his only tightened. Face set in a facade of indifference, fury simmered beneath his features.Â
âThey will pay, one way or another.âÂ
The Halla exploded into a mess of blood and carrion and she stifled a gasp, turning into Lucanisâ shoulder. Sheâd seen all she needed to, and not a second more.Â
âAre you alright?â Lucanis asked softly.Â
âThis whole place makes my skin crawl.â She said through gritted teeth, releasing his hand with some difficulty and storming through the Venatori camp.
âââ âčâ±â€â°âč âââ
âThe Dalish prisonersâŠthey escaped safely?â
Covered in blood and dirt after the events at the Venatori camp, Rook stood across Solas in their usual meeting spot, each on one side of an enormous expanse in the Fade. His prison.
âFor now.â
Theyâd barely been successful. Elgarânan had shown up with an unexpected archdemon, and soon detected their presence, bringing to light his alliances with both the Venatori and the Antaam. If not for Solasâ intervention, they, nor the Dalish, would have made it out alive.
âWhatever my frustration with them, it feels good to have helped my people again. Thank you for allowing me to. The chance to infuriate Elgarânan was a reminder of simpler times.â Solas spoke more warmly than she was used to. It felt like a change she shouldnât trust.Â
âWe share a set of similar goals, but our endgame is not the same.â Rook said, folding her arms over her chest, âAnd I still havenât forgiven you for hurting Varric.â
âVarricâŠâ Solas echoed, regret weighing on his features. âHow is he?â
âOut of commission, for now. His recovery is slow, thanks to you, but his condition seems to beâŠ.improving.â Rook said, worry gnawing at her gut.Â
âAnd you? I canât help but notice you bear some injuries of your own.â Solas nodded at the contusion on her temple and where her wounds had reopened on her palms. Sheâd had no choice but to draw her weapons and fight, undoubtedly prolonging her healing time.Â
âIâll be fine.â She muttered, pulling her gloves from out of her pockets and slipping them on, careful to keep a straight face. Solas wouldnât get the satisfaction of seeing her suffer today.Â
âYou lead your allies well, Rook. When we first met, I saw you only as a foolish child who disrupted my plans. You wereâŠan irritant.â He said, crossing his arms behind his back. âI expected you to be nothing more than a tool, but youâve proven me wrong at every turn. Perhaps Varric was not misguided, placing his faith in you.â
âYouâd do well not to underestimate me.â Rook said, âMost come to regret itâŠgiven they survive long enough.âÂ
âSpoken like someone who kills for a living.â
âLetâs not pretend my death toll is anywhere close to yours.â Rook growled.Â
Solas hummed in acknowledgement, uncrossing his arms and beginning to pace.Â
âYour team trusts you, and you listen to them. It is impressiveâŠand enviable. You work together with a camaraderie that took me centuries to build in my rebellion.â
âI care about them. I donât use them asâŠhow did you put it⊠tools?â
âI caution you not to allow feelings to distract you from your goal. What little time you have left, you should make certain you, and the team that trusts you, are ready for whatever comes. This might be your last chance. Elgarânan and Ghilanânain are preparing their ritual to pierce the Veil during the next eclipse, as Elgarânanâs power is tied to light and darkness.â
âMy allies will be ready.â Rook said, walking through dust and rubble towards the other end of the Fadeâs nothingness. Anything to be further from Solas.Â
âAre you?â He called after her. âI know that you will do everything in your power not to fail them , but what are you doing to ensure you will not fail yourself ? I have gleaned insight into some of your baggage, the complicated feelings you carry for fellow Crows, including the one on your own team. Have you grappled with your own shame? The regrets that haunt you in your sleep?â
âThe Lighthouse is a shrine to your regret, Solas.â Rook said over her shoulder as the world around them faded to white. âKeep your words of wisdom and try heeding them yourself.â
