This is something I learned at one of the pre-op visits for my breast reduction! My surgeon was basically I think an independent surgeon (as I guess I would imagine is common for “cosmetic”/plastic surgeons?) and she was telling us a little bit about what to do for talking to insurance about the surgery and stuff, and she mentioned that for us going through insurance it would be at a particular hospital, but she also often did surgeries where people didn’t use there insurance, and she did those at some other place, and the price she charged up front was much lower, because that was the actual cost of the surgery (and equipment and everyone’s salaries etc.) and she had to raise the ticket price significantly when people would go through insurance, because the insurance company would negotiate that price down, and then keep some of the money. (Obviously for us and many others it still worked out to be cheaper for us out of pocket to go through insurance, but the amount she made was roughly the same even though it would look like she charged thousands more for my breast reduction than for someone not using insurance)

So, when you get those bills from your insurance after a doctors visit, and there’s that little table that tells you, this is the cost of the visit, this is the discount we got you, this is how much we paid, this is how much you still have to pay?

That line about “we got you this discount” is misleading. They actually caused the provider to raise the initial cost of your care by that amount, or more, in anticipation of the insurance company refusing to pay the full amount so that they could tell you they got you a discount.

It is not because your doctor is a greedy bastard; your doctor does not see most of that money. It is because the system is broken to a level that is truly impressive in its dedication to making a shit ton of money for insurance company executives and shareholders.

Redemption

Prologue

“ Ladies and Gentlemen, please help me congratulate Mr. Sean Allen, on his appointment as Judge of our new Drug Court,” said Attorney General Kenneth Hall.

As they were clapping and applauding, Sean reflected, on his journey to date.

35 years ago, my mom, at the age of 21, was on her 4th pregnancy. She had 3 daughters already. She knew that my father loved his girls, but she saw the disappointment in his face, every time the doctor will say “it’s a girl.”

Also, she was tired, she has been pregnant for the last 4 years, and she wanted this to be her last pregnancy.

So she made a vow to God. If God will bless her with a son, she will give him back to God. His upbringing and education, will be founded on Christian principles. His life work will bring honor and glory to God. He will also be a blessing to his country. Also no wine or strong drink, will ever touch his lips.

And on the 7th of July, Sharon Allen, brought forth  a 8lb, baby boy, and he was named Sean Samuel Allen.

My parents we elated. Especially my mom. She never forgot her vow to God. She made sure, I didn’t forget either.

I went to Catholic primary school, and at 11, I was sent to a Jesuit Boarding School, in Florida. II also attended a Jesuit University, in New York, my mom, kept her vow. However, I didn’t want to be a priest, but a lawyer. She was fine with that, as long as I honored God and I was a blessing to the country.

I attended law school at home, in The Bahamas. At 24, I started working in the Attorney General Office,  as a Prosecutor, in various courts, but eventually specializing in drug cases.

And here I am at 35, one of the youngest judges, to be appointed in a specialized court in my country.

So, as they lift their glasses, with Champagne, my glass had ginger ale. I have never had a drop of alcohol in my entire life.

Chapter 1

Shortly after, with a substantial increase in drug convictions, I was asked to be apart of a Special Joint Task Force.

When the United States declared a war on drugs, it seek several Caribbean Countries to partner with them. The Bahamas was in a unique position for several reasons. Firstly, because we are an archipelago country, with over 700 islands, rocks and cays. We were considered a trans-shipment point. We are the closest Caribbean Country to the United States. We also had one of the largest  container port in The Caribbean. 

Our first Task force meeting was held, in Miami, Florida. All the relevant agencies were there. The DEA, DEU, CIA,  FBI,  judges and prosecutors from 18 Caribbean and South America Countries. I felt a since of honor, to be apart of a prestigious organization.

Later that evening, a cocktail reception was held and we were encourage to mingle with each other. 

“ Buenos noches,' said this beautiful woman, “ I am Carmen Reyes, Attorney General of El Paseo.”

“ Good Evening,” I am Sean Allen, from The Bahamas,” I said, smiling.

“ Oh don’t be modest Justice Allen, I know who your are, actually every one here knows who you are, “ she said graciously.

From that moment on, we were inseparable. On the last night of the meeting, seven days later. 

I asked Carmen four little words, “ Will you marry me?”

Chapter 2

“ Why the rush Sean,” asked Sam Allen, my father.

“ I am not in any rush, I know what I want, and I want Carmen,” I said.

“ What is wrong, with a Bahamian girl?” asked Sharon, my mom.

“ There is nothing wrong with Bahamian woman, I was raised by one, and I am related to three wonderful Bahamian women (sisters).” Sean said lovingly.

But his mom will not be deterred.

“ What do you know about her or her family?” asked Sharon.

“ I know enough, that I want to spend the rest of my life with her,” said Sean annoyingly.

“ Sean, you could be compromise! She is from a country that is known for drugs, and you preside over a drug court, isn’t that a conflict of interest?” ask Sharon .

“ What is the conflict? Carmen and I are on the same side, when it comes to the drug trade. She know it’s my life work, and she supports me!” exclaimed Sean. He was truly angry now. He had never been angry with his parents, ever. What’s going on here he thought.

3 months later, we were married in El Paseo, Texas, it was a beautiful day, except for the Father giver, Raul Reyes Mendoza, the Head of Mendoza Cartel. I was in shock, Carmen never revealed this to me.

As soon as the reception was over, I went home that night, to The Bahamas.

Over the next 6 months, every one of Carmen, country man, that enter my court their sentence was double. After awhile, I felt bad about the way I treated Carmen, so I decided to visit her, but I was told she had move back to Colombia. When I got there, her father told me with such relish, that Carmen had remarried.

He told me that I brought disgrace and dishonor to his house.  Can you believe it? This monster, who has wreck havoc on some many countries. Who has murdered thousands, he has made widows and orphans in the thousands. How dare he?

Chapter 3

So armed with righteous  indignation, Justice Sean Allen, became a one man army against The Mendoza Cartel. Everyone knew that, if you came to his court, your chances of getting off, was so slim.

He was also very active in the Task Force. Sometimes he participated in search and seizure missions. 

In the legal community, Sean Allen, was know as a champion for the people. In the underworld, he was a threat to their way of life, and he to be dealt with.

As time went on, Justice Allen, had numerous attempts on his life, and he prevailed each time. The Lord was with Sean.

Shortly, afterwards Sean was summoned to a special meeting with the Task Force.

“ Good morning Justice Allen, I will be brief, we have credible intelligence, that there is a million dollar bounty on your head. We would like to put you in protective custody,” said Special Agent James Smith.

“Thanks, but no thanks, but I will not be run of my job or country,” said Sean, “ the Lord will prevail.”

Several months later, while having dinner with some fellow judges, in Nassau, 

“We will like to thank the chef,” said Sean, to their waitress.

“ I am the executive chef and owner, I hope you enjoy your meal,” my name is Dedra Jones.

Sean was speechless, he loved her instantly.  It has been 5 years since Carmen, an at 40, it’s time to settle down. However, this time, he will do a thorough back ground check.

Chapter 4

Dedra Jones, was born in California, she attended UCLA, where she majored in Business Management, but her passion, had always been food. So she enroll in Culinary school, and the rest is history.

We were together, every chance, we got. She will cooked for me, food I had never tried in my life. Another first, she encourage me to drink. I resisted at first, but she was so persistent, that I gave in. She convinced me, that she cooked with wine, so me drinking it, was basically the same thing.

The changes in my life were not subtle. Firstly, I knew, my parents didn’t approve of Dedra, so I barely spoke to them. I quit the Task Force, because they were constantly telling me I was in danger. Then finally my job, there were no more passion or zeal.

I only wanted Dedra, I became obsessed. If I didn’t hear from her, I became jealous and paranoid. It was so out of character, I didn’t know what to do. Dedra encouraged me to try one of her sleeping pills, because I had developed insomnia. Over a period of time, I needed pills just to get through the day. I was drinking as well,, vodka was my liquor of choice.

Then one fateful night, while driving home I fell asleep at the wheel. Three days later, when I regained consciousness, it was on every news outlet, locally and internationally. “Bahamian Drug Judge is a Junkie.”

Chapter 5

When I taken to the hospital, they ran the routine toxicology test. I had every illicit drug in my system. The report was leaked to the media.

The first person I asked for was Dedra, only my family was there. She had left the country.

I was asked to step down as a judge (fired). Ostracized, by my colleagues, all of my convictions were being investigated. My drug court was disbanded I was ruined, the Lord had departed from me.

The Cartel, finally had succeeded in destroying me.  This time, the weapon they used was older than time itself, it was Dedra! She was consistently lacing my food and wine with drugs. Hence my paranoia and erratic mood swings. It had also affected my health.

Sean never practice law again. He was never disbarred. But the humiliation was too great, he was a prisoner in his mind. The only people he saw, were his family. He had let his country, his family, and God down.

Two years later, he had a special visitor, who came a calling.

“ We have put together a Special Covet Operation, and we want you to be a part of it,” said the now Director James Smith.

“ Are you the only person, who haven’t heard what I have done,” said Sean.

“ I know who you are and what you stood for, the Cartel is becoming stronger, and they need to be stopped, and you are the man for the job,” said James.

“ I don’t know James,” said Sean sadly.

“ Think it over, a just man falls seven times, but he gets back up,” said James as he left.

Sean, then prayed to the Lord saying, “O Lord God, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once,  O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Cartel for destroying my life.”

This time, the Covet Operation, that Sean was a part of resulted in the conviction and the death of many members of the Cartel. Also every drug field, and lab was burnt to the ground. Millions of their assets were confiscated.

Justice Sean Samuel Allen died a few months later, he was given a state funeral.

The Bahamas had rest for 20 years.

The year is wrapping up and what a year its been! Definitely full of hills and valleys... last December I had a horrible fight with my parents, and I was second-guessing my worth and feeling like shit. And that lead me to view people who I initially didn’t think were for me, as for me. January I tried lighting that up, it crashed and burned, and I was getting stupid drunk and yelling in someone’s house about how Someone didn’t love me, and why didn’t they love me, and is this my last chance, ah-ah-ah. February and March were a blur. I wanted to move to New York, to ultimately leave everything behind and forget, but alas - Chaos stepped in and was like “Not today,” and the person I was supposed to live with ended up having a knock down, drag out breakup with his partner, getting fired from his job, and downsizing quite a bit. I applied to 50 jobs but not living there makes it exponentially harder to get an interview in a state already known for it’s competitiveness, even for average salaries. I clocked the resistance. Okay, so no New York. The person I lived with finally hit rock bottom enough to almost overdose and die, admitted he was a drug addict and began seeking treatment. Not only definitely not a good time to move there, but also not a good time to visit. There goes $700 non-refundable dollars as I opted not to go visit during Spring Break. Meanwhile, my Mom was helping my ailing grandma out of state, my dad was trying to hold down the house while she was gone. We were all split up all over the West and I hadn’t seen them since December, and because I had a second job I couldn’t just go when I had work breaks. I wasn’t able to see them until OCTOBER. That’s wild when you’re an only child and close with your parents. I basically had to re-enroll to University and take classes to up my GPA, to get the certification, and seriously... I love my SPED kids like they were my own, but the people and the process. Was it worth it? Is it worth this seemingly uphill battle? Having to dig myself further into debt with school loans and then some because I needed more classes than I originally planned for to raise my GPA, and then taking the certification tests on top of it...  this is looking a lot like New York, but I persisted, and I did all of it working a second job. (By the way, this was a cakewalk. It was an annoying cakewalk, but in comparison to people I know, a cakewalk nonetheless. I could have never worked a second job trying to graduate with my actual degree like a lot of people I know did. I think about that a lot when I’m whining. Like I knew this girl who worked three jobs, got a double degree, and graduated with no debt, with some crazy high GPA. Not all heroes wear capes.) So I began cutting away the fat: I dropped contact with the “Someone,” and did so as gracefully as possible. I wished them the best, and you know... they didn’t fight it. Okay, so that’s done. Time to pick up my bruised ego and my heaving lungs and keep moving. I left the uppity Rich Kid School in June and moved to a more diverse one in the city. It was elementary, it was closer to my house, it was supposed to be easier. My personal life was kind of going numb, but I was making lots of money. I got paid out by the school, I was working the second job, and I was babysitting one of my former students weekly. July I took a trip with some friends, it bombed. Nixed that off my list, nixed my therapist I didn’t like off my list, nixed the school that wasn’t working, and eventually in October I nixed the Elementary school and SPED all together because I’d had enough. However, it’s like when I nixed something that was definitely not working, I was given better things as a replacement. The elementary was CRAZY TOWN, and that’s not an exaggeration, but I finally got to work with someone who fucking cared like a SPED teacher should care and who could manage, and communicate, and be innovative, and TEACH. I wasn’t working in an environment that used its resources to circle-jerk the football coaches and their professional needs anymore - NICE. I met genuine, caring people and made friends with people who were open minded like me. Once again, though, that second job started grating on my nerves at this point because I was so stressed out at the elementary. I nixed it. I nixed the elementary, and now I leveled up even more making a salaried position, working around adults, and yes - I have a work crush. He’s smart and funny, and I think he likes me too. We’ll see.  My point is this year was all about identifying ALL. THE. WAYS. I betrayed myself and my values, and when I quit doing that - I GOT REWARDED. I’m currently chilling after cutting out people I outgrew. I’m not angry anymore about it, I wonder how I could’ve handled it better, but I’m looking forward to the day where I don’t have to keep making adjustments. Where I’ve found my spot to stay, my end point, and I feel like 2020 will be a great year for that.

6. Nationality + Ethnicity: Canadian. As for ethnicity, I’m not 100% sure on all the details, it’d be interesting to have a DNA test done someday. I know for sure that I’m mostly Irish, French (my last name is French), British, German, Scottish and have an Indigenous great-grandfather, but I don’t know which tribe specifically (based on location my educated guess would be Mi’kmaq). Other than that, who knows.

7. Favorite fruit: All of them except bananas. Mostly kiwis, mangoes, peaches and pomegranate. 

8. Favorite season: Well, overall I’d say Fall, but honestly it stays cold where I live for so long that I’m usually the least depressed in the Summer. Only bad part is all the insects. So I’ll say that grace period right before Fall before it gets cold/snows, but after the insects are all dead and it’s not sweltering. I like a happy medium, but unfortunately, we usually just experience extreme weather.

9. Favorite book: The Silmarillion, hands down. It can be a bit of a bear to read if you like more personal and subjective stories, but for a narrative much in the form of a history book despite being fictional, it is amazing. It is reminiscent of a religious text like the Bible only a million times better because relates to my favorite thing in life, Lord Of The Rings.

10. Favorite flower: Orchids. Though I’m not knowledgeable about flowers so much, and don’t really care for them.

11. Favorite scent: I don’t like strong floral scents, I prefer sugary things. All my perfumes, soap and hand santizers etc are all secnted with sugary things, some of my favorites are vanilla, cotton candy, marshmallow, fruit punch, black cherry, peach and brown sugar. I also really get satisfied by smelling porcelain, especially the inside of porcelain figurines, or a new elevator that has ceramic tiles. Don’t ask why.

12. Favorite color: Purple! I forget exactly which shade, but mostly dark purples with a reddish tinge like plum, mardi gras and patriarch purple. I also love cyan, but honestly my enjoyment of colors comes mostly from creating combinations of them together. I really like creating color palettes, I have a large collection of pencil crayons/markers/etc and I also makes survival equipment at the city market for a friend of mine’s booth (I specialize in the bracelets, but also have some experience with belts, necklaces, “grenades”, leashes, decorations and even someone requested a bikini once xD), and I have all kinds of paracord colors to choose from :3

13. Favorite animal: Cats. Sloths. Penguins. Platypus. Lemurs. Small rodents. Emerald tree boas. I’m sure there’s many more.

14. Coffee, Tea or Hot Cocoa: Eh, none really. I don’t drink coffee or tea (I hate the taste of coffee, and can’t drink caffeine without becoming dizzy/nauseous/having a panic attack, so I only drink de-caffeinated tea occasionally, usually fruit teas. I had many good variations in China when I visited a tea factory.) I also hate chocolate, but can tolerate some products tasting like it, so hot chocolate isn’t my first choice, but I can stand it. 

15. Sleep hours: I need at least 12, but usually my sleep schedule screws it up so that I only get around 10. I think it is because of mental health issues, physical issues, the fact that I don’t sleep peacefully, and my past with anti-psychotic sedatives medication and other drugs that have made me perma-sleepy. e.e

16. Cats or dogs: Cats, but I like dogs just fine, especially small ones. I’ve just grown up with only many cats all my life because I lived in apartments where we can’t have dogs. I would like to someday have a brown little miniature pinscher :>

17. Number of blankets I sleep with: Currently, none (it’s too hot, and my apartment is like a box that radiates heat with no air circulation, even with the AC, it’s just too small). In the winter I sleep with two fuzzy ones and a large comforter. Any other time 1-2.

18. Dream trip: Outer space. Ideally a planet, and options are fairly limited so I’ll say Mars, because it is the only terrestrial planet that won’t immediately kill you, Mercury is too close to the sun and has no atmosphere so I’d get fried by radiation, venus is the hottest planet and actually hell incarnate, and pluto be an ice-cold bitch (but still a planet in my book). Anywhere else is too far. But on Earth? I’d love to go back to China. Or really anywhere. I like travelling.

Apparently my first post was on December 30th 2016, but this is only my back-up blog I made after Tumblr locked me out of my first one and I stopped using my roleplay accounts. Healing Physically Post Surgery

It has been five days since my surgery, and a lot has transpired in that short amount of time. Before we start our newest update, we once again have to say thank you to everyone for their thoughts, prayers, meals, and visits. This journey should be hard, but we are moving forward every day because we have your endless kindness. For this, we will always be humbled and always, always be grateful.

Surgery Extent

As Bryan mentioned in his update, my surgery was much more invasive and intense than even the doctor could have predicted. What the doctor originally thought was a large cyst on my ovary quickly became bigger and more complicated once he was literally able to open me up and examine the mass. To his shock, he found that the mass was not located on my ovary. Instead, the mass was actually located inside of my ovary. The extent of the grapefruit-sized mass had swelled up my right ovary to that same size. The doctor was hoping to be able to drain most of the cyst and have less than an inch incision. This would have allowed me to recover quickly. Instead, he had to surgically remove all of the mass and my one inch incision grew to about six inches. This incision is the major source of my pain post surgery, and it is the reason I continue to remain highly limited with my mobility. I can basically make it from the couch to bed back to the couch, and that exhausts me. Both Bryan and my mom say that I am looking better every day; however, I am not feeling the improvement yet. But, I am sure looking forward to gain my independence and mobility back. It is super humbling having to have your husband lift you out of bed in the morning. According to the doctor, my new timeline for full recovery is six-to- eight weeks. However, I should be feeling significantly better in 2+ weeks. Just no heavy lifting for me this summer.

Mass Testing

As with standard protocol, all masses that are removed are sent for further evaluation. They did this will my first surgery, and they followed this same protocol with Friday’s surgery. My first cyst came back as exactly that... a cyst. This mass came back different. It came back as abnormal and borderline, and that is leading us on to some additional medical steps. A scary reality is the cyst can no longer be classified as a cyst or mass. The reality now is that it was an abnormal tumor that was borderline cancerous.... not cancerous.... but it would have likely headed that way if we hadn’t removed it. As a result of it’s now tumor classification, I am being referred to an ovarian oncologist who will complete routine checkups of me for likely the rest of my life. The added vocabulary words of tumor, abnormal, and oncologist have been super scary realities. We just sit in this new reality with just complete relief that the tumor was found and that it is now gone. I will be healthy again once I heal from my incision. 

Next Steps/Realities

1. I will complete bi/yearly to yearly examines with the ovarian oncologist likely for the rest of my life. They will be monitoring me for an return growth or new tumors that may develop in my future. If any new tumors develop, they will take my ovaries as a precaution. For now, we will just be monitored by the specialist. This comes as a relief. A large worry post this surgery was who would monitor me for any return tumors or cysts. Originally, it would have had to been a regular OBGYN who doesn’t do routine ultrasounds. Now, I will be monitored by the best, and if something comes up again, it will be found quickly. Yes, it is scary to know I have to be monitored, but deep down it is a relief to my heart to know I will be watched. 

2. No more infertility treatments will ever be possible in our future again. We both had made peace to this reality once we lost our infertility insurance. However, in all honestly, we hadn’t shut our hearts off to the possibility of going down that road again if insurance would be returned. But now, the tumor changes that. With the presence of the tumor, I should not have any more exposure to infertility drugs in my lifetime.... EVER. That means we are officially closing the door on  any additional infertility treatments in the future due to the huge risk it would but on my future health. It isn’t worth it. We have our Brooklyn, and we have our future child entering our family through adoption. To us, the possibility of a pregnancy doesn’t make up for the risks.

3. We will be donating our last embryo. 

We do have one remaining embryo left. Originally, our plan was to pay the yearly fee to keep this embryo stored in case down the road the option to try for that last embryo would be available. Now that I can have no more exposure to infertility drugs, we have to let that embryo go. We have options, and Bryan and I have discussed them deeply. The truth is that embryo is our baby, it is our DNA, and our choices have to be both legal and right for us. Due to the fact that a future transfer is no longer an option, it would make zero sense for us to keep it frozen. It would literally be us throwing $700 away yearly just to keep it in the “freezer”. And since we are now into the adoption process, we can use that $700 a year for bringing our next baby home. That leaves us two remaining options for our last embryo... we could destroy it or donate it. Our choice is to donate. We have our Brooklyn because someone made a selfless choice. A choice to give us her and allow us to be her parents. Maybe...just maybe this embryo could bring someone their “Brooklyn.” Not to mention, the process for getting that embryo was awful. No way am I letting them just trash it. Heck no! I worked way too hard for that embryo. 

4. We move forward... Onward to the Home Study.

We have one last step of our application process to do. We need to get our fingerprints taken so the adoption agency can do background checks on us. As soon as I am mobile, we will head down to our local police station and get these taken care of. It has to wait though until I can walk a bit further. Hopefully, we can cross this off next week! Then, we start the home study meetings. 

5. Garage Sale Set for June 23/24th

We are collecting tons of items, and we are so grateful for all those that have been donated. My first plan was to have the garage sale this upcoming weekend, but my surgery pushed it back a lot. We will now be having our sale on June 23/24, and we are looking like we may have enough to hold two sales. One will be on the June date and the other will be closer to when school starts. Once we are done with the garage sales, we will donate anything left to our agency or our local thrift stores. 

6. Above everything, through everything, we are happy. 

Both of us have had multiple conversations with people who have continually asked us how in the world we are dealing with this all. Our truth is simple: We are happy. Right before I lost the baby, I told Bryan that I couldn’t imagine our lives being happier. We had each other, a beautiful daughter, and a baby on the way. Yes, some challenges have definitely hit us since that conversation in April. But the truth of it remains. Bryan and I have each other, we have our energetic Brooklyn, and we have another baby coming to us someday and some how through the adoption process. Through everything that has happen these last couple months, our happiness has remained.

How I (hopefully) ran the Marathon. Part iii

Right, the third instalment…

I know The Empire Strikes back gets widely lauded as the best, but Return of the Jedi has always been my favourite so let’s hope this is the same.

Well,  f#*k me, what a nightmare. I’ve never been a big believer in fate, or luck (you make your own right) and I’ve never been superstitious but I’m beginning to think this whole thing is jinxed…

The whole superstition/fate thing is a load of bollocks in my book, how can three lines that Mystic Meg writes in the paper fit for a 12th of the population or to put it into numbers, about 5 million people within the UK. Although I have to admit it is ironic that my Gran was a Cancer given the way she died, she was mauled to death by a giant crab. As I’ve said above though, I can’t help but think this whole thing is doomed to fail.

So, an update on how the running has been going since the last entry…… I haven’t done any. Nadda. None. Nil. Nope. Not a single run at all. Not the ideal preparation and not quite the stage that I wanted to be at. I guess I should explain why.

I finished work for Christmas and was looking forward to some family time, not to harp on about it but it’s not been the easiest few months as anyone who’s read the other entries will know and we thought, “yep, that’ll be good, let’s do some fun stuff”. I managed the Panto on the Friday afternoon which was ace but started to feel a bit rough on Christmas Eve so went off to bed with a couple of Paracetamol thinking I’d be fine when I woke up in the morning. What actually happened was that I woke at 3am so cold my teeth were chattering but I was dripping with sweat at the same time, a full on fever. All of Christmas Day I felt awful, like proper awful. I managed to get downstairs for the kids to open their presents but it was game over after that. I did make it to my sister’s house where I slept on the sofa for an hour and a half before heading home to bed, 24 Pigs in Blankets especially bought in for me untouched. I believe they’re still there..

I laid in bed for the next three days pretty much unable to move just assuming I had flu. Blokes are supposed to get it really bad right? So I figured this must be what they talk about when they say ‘man flu’. I’m really not one to cry wolf with illness or make a fuss so I just sucked it up. Tash moved my lamp into the spare room for me and I lay there for a few days. After a consultation with a student with a ring binder on the 111 service on the fourth day who told me they thought I was fine and just to rest I gave up and went to the doctor. The doc spent two minutes having a look and sent me to the hospital having diagnosed Pneumonia saying I needed IV antibiotics and fluids. This contrasted quite significantly with the diagnosis from my dad when he was driving me to the aforementioned appointment who told me I needed to “get up and about” and “show some mental resolve”. Then as I stumbled/limped/fell into the waiting room, literally feeling on the verge of death he commented “see, you look better already for the fresh air” You can take the man out of Yorkshire….

So without going into too many details, I spent 5 days in the hospital on various drips for fluids and antibiotics and oxygen masks etc trying to recover from the Pneumonia. I don’t know if anyone reading this has had it but I can see how it finishes off the elderly as its bloody horrible and I felt awful. Truly awful. I got sent home on New Years Day (oh yes, my New Years Eve was a belter, particularly when the dickhead in the next bed started making calls to people very audibly at 1am to say hello and the bloke opposite decided to pull out his own catheter and then started screaming “my willy’s bleeding”. He was a lovely old bloke opposite though, very caring, he even got up and tried to help the bloke next to him have a drink. Of course the poor bloke next to couldn’t sit up and would have drowned if the nurses hadn’t stopped him but it was a lovely gesture. You could write a great sitcom about life in an NHS hospital. In fact I should have done to stave off the boredom. Loads of the patients I saw are such ar*eholes. The bloke next to me on my first visit was shouting “lady, lady” all the time at the nurses and all he wanted was for them to plug in his mobile phone. Who needs to plug in a phone at 3am?! Then of course the nurses get distracted as they have 700 things to do and people calling them and go off. After the second time he stopped me getting pain relief by distracting the nurse to get his phone plugged in I had to politely point out that if he interrupted for something so menial again he’d never have to worry about charging his phone again after I’d shoved it where…… I know I know, I’m punchy but it’s been a tough 5 weeks….

To put it into context for those who think I’ve been soft, you get an infection marker in your blood (CRP it’s called, look at me, I’ve got all the medical terms now) and it should be between 0-5 usually. When I was admitted to hospital mine was 450 something.  After 6 days at home where I felt a bit better, but not good I went back to the doctor who said I should be better by now given the drugs and time and so he did another blood test and my CRP was still 170 odd so he sent me back to the hospital where I spent another 4 days. Fortunately not on the acute medical ward this time (well, I was for the first 24 hours and then I got moved) so to be honest the second stint on an different ward felt like I’d been moved to The Hilton. I had a chair, a bedside table and a window…! It turns out the fluid on my lung from the pneumonia hadn’t drained away and had become infected and caused my lung to partially collapse. Oh yes, I’ve been having all the fun….

I was told I’d need either a chest drain to get rid of the fluid or be moved to Southampton hospital for surgery, fortunately for me I only needed the former and after that, coming home and another couple of weeks R&R I’m starting to feel human again………..but I haven’t been for a run yet.

You also start filling the days with meaningless and pointless things in hospital as well. Like going to the toilet far more frequently than you need to because you get to walk there and it’s something to do. Then you spend a good 5 minutes determining if your stools are a type 3 or 4 according to the chart on the back of the door and should you be worried or not (surely they should just stick a newspaper in there). It really is/was that bad. Not to be cliché either but the food really is almost inedible. I know they cater for large numbers, and on a budget, but still, how people ever get better eating that is a mystery. Its worth publicly commenting Berni Hampton that the Spaghetti Bolognese you made me on my second stint in hospital saved my life. It was easily the best Spag Bol I’ve ever had and sitting there chatting to Grant while I polished it off was the best I’d been in 3 weeks, a real turning point.

Tash should get a shout out here as well. I’ve cited in previous entries about her ability to cope and get on with it but bugger me she really is awesome. As well as everything she has going on, and spending Christmas solo with the kids (family obviously but in terms of looking after the little one’s) she managed to do a month’s worth of early wake ups, breakfast shift, get them dressed, bath time routines, bedtime routines all on her own and still cope with work, general life and fit in coming to see me every day, bring me Smarties, deal with my moods about the whole thing and cheer me up/tell me to man up where appropriate. I’ve promised I’ll make it up to her. I won’t put my trainers on until I get out of the house now.

So far this has all been pretty depressing hasn’t it, it’s like an entry in Adrian Mole’s diary “today I measured my pecker, still fuc*ing small”…

So the marathon………and running and where I’m up to with that. Well,…… I’m still convinced I can do it. Various members of my family, friends and most importantly my wife have told me that there’s no chance and I’m an idiot for even considering it. I’ve spoken to Rebecca at Anthony Nolan and they’ve been brilliant and told me I can defer and do it next year for them if I want to and just continue my current fundraising but with no pressure to do two lots (ie. For two years entries). I guess I won’t be the first person to ever pull out should I have to. I should note at this stage that I definitely will do it, even if I have to defer and do it in 2018. People have been amazing with their kindness and generosity for the charity and that’s not been missed and this isn’t a ‘get out of jail card�� for me, I will do it and I will make sure I put myself through it for those donations. Every penny is vital and I want to make sure I’ve earned it. Especially when you look at some of the incredible donations like that anonymous one for £1,000. Ha ha, anonymous, yeah right, we ALL know who that was (love you mate, can’t wait to get back in our favourite restaurant). That one also specified I had to do it in 3 and a half hours or pay it back and that target time might be beyond me this year now I’m 6 weeks behind schedule and my lungs are still like that scene in the The Matrix when Neo is reborn and comes out gasping for air.

So I’ve decided I’m going to let the professionals make the decision. I have a follow up with a respiratory consultant on Monday and they’re going to X-ray my lungs and see how I’m doing. I’ll ask them outright if I can run and if they say no, it’ll be put back to 2018. Definitely not the outcome I want, possibly for the best but I’ll be desperately disappointed if that’s what they say. Having been so ill however, I don’t want to go through that again and if they tell me my body can’t cope in three months time then I won’t risk it. Hopefully they’ll tell me I’m good to go and I can pick up the training. Otherwise I’ve got a hotel room going spare on the 22nd. There’s no point using it on Marathon Day otherwise, it’s packed and you can’t get anywhere…

In a bit of good news, all of those emails and looking for contact details finally paid off. The bloody nice people at the Manchester United Foundation sent me a signed football that turned up in the post the other day. All I have to do is send them details of what I do with it/how much I raise and they’ll forward me on a certificate of authenticity with it as well. What a nice bunch and a terrific gesture from the League Cup Runners Up 2017. Looking at it, I think if I auction it I’ll raise less than if I raffle if as I’m reliant on one person paying lots at an auction so I’m going to advertise it as far and wide as I can at £1 a raffle ticket. I’m film it all and make it all visible so if you’re interested in a ticket, two or more let me know and I’ll work out the best way to collect the money etc. It goes without saying that 100% of the money taken will go to the charity. There’s no fees, costs anywhere, they gave me the ball for nothing so it’s all going to Anthony Nolan.

Running wise I’m going to give it a go at the weekend with a slow/short run just to test the water. I gave 9 holes a whirl this week and that felt OK (other than the fact my putting was dreadful but that’s to be expected after 5 weeks). I had a little bit of pain in my back where the drain was the next day but it’s cleared up pretty quickly. I guess we’ll just have to see if I make it back from my run on Saturday morning. Hopefully I’ll feel fine, trample mud all through the house and we’ll be back to normal.

And that’s where I’m up to. I’m sorry it wasn’t very funny, or cheery, or positive but it’s reflective of the past 5 weeks for me. I’ll keep you posted with a short entry early next week on the verdict (if anyone is even reading this..) I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients. I spoke to my insurance today and they said that all my medical is covered since I had that already in my plan (without it raising my premium) and that I should get a settlement ON TOP of paying for damages to my car and getting me a rental, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get taken for a ride. I've heard the horror stories of dealing with insurance companies. Any advice on what I should make a point of saying to the other insurance company, etc. Thanks in advance....""

I have held a full uk driving licence for 14 years.......my husband (who has a provisional licence) was put on my new policy last year as a named driver. Today, he passed his test, so to keep it all legal, i contacted the insurance to advise of change of circs. I expected the monthly premiums to rise a little, but what happened next confused and angered me and I really need to know if there is anything I can do......he we go....they said they could no longer insure me and my husband and that they would cancel the policy and were gving me 7 days notice before this happened, (why cant it just be amended, i know loads of people that have done this) they said it was a special deal for me because i had a provisional driver as my named driver..(to me this makes no sense, they work on risk, surely they wouldnt give special deals for unexperienced drivers?) but the icing on the cake they want to charge a 40 cancellation fee, however i am not cancelling they are??? also i can take out a new policy with them which i have to pay an admin fee for making a change to the policy, however it is supposedly a brand new policy???
