You feel like you've spent days in the maze of online forums and shady web pages cobbled together from what seems to be the discards of some poor intern's first web design project. You're not sure when you last slept or ate, but you feel like you're so close. There's a trail of clues, right there, and the solution might be hidden just around the corner.

Suddenly, all the lights go out, and you're left sitting in the glow of your computer screen, which... first, it's not a laptop, so, how? But secondly and perhaps more importantly, it seems to have been taken over by some kind of a spiralling light. A virus? Possibly, considering how shady those sites were. Then a voice echoes in your head.

"Oh, aren't you just a darling? I really couldn't have asked for better."

You blink and open your mouth, but before you can say anything , the light brightens exponentially, till all you can see is pure white.

You slowly blink your eyes open and squint ahead. There's a lot of vaguely luminous grey in all directions, dotted here and there with black rectangles. How strange. You make your way to the closest one and look through to see... your room? You can even see yourself slumped over in your chair, face down on the keyboard.

You watch yourself twitch, and slowly raise your head to look at the screen. Your body snorts in cold amusement and you feel the dread creep into your brain as the dots start connecting themselves. The figure in the chair tilts its head at you and smirks.

"Hello there, familiar. We are going to have so much fun."

Digital “familiars” are all the rage in the near future. They can take any form, chat with you, manifest as lifelike holograms, and are capable of travelling between devices instantly. How you GET a “familiar” is never explained by those who have them.

I love it when people use "shrimp" to mean "beyond the human range". like "shrimp colors" but applied to other things. "shrimp emotions" "shrimp sounds" "shrimp morality", as if shrimp are living some kind of transcendent existence that humans can never comprehend

Ok, so in the original Bram Stoker novel, sunlight is not lethal to Dracula. He just loses most of his powers. I'm bringing this up cuz I want a horror comedy where the hero, sensing dawn, tears off the curtains as a last-ditch effort only to have the vampire go "Aw shit, there goes most of my fancy powers. Guess I'll have to beat your ass the old-fashioned way" then proceeds to just deck the hero cuz a vampire at half-strength is still a fucking vampire.

My favorite piece of tumblr linguistics to ever come out of this site is “the horrors”. It’s delightfully evocative and also gives absolutely no information about what I’m talking about. “Sorry I can’t go out today I’m facing the horrors” am I talking about the encroaching dread and existential despair of our dystopian world? am I talking about the fact that I have to wash dishes? No one knows. It’s all horrors.

You add onto the trunk "Just" to make it say "It is not JUST a deer" and smile. "You are also a new friend!" The deer, having never heard that, smiles in a slightly unsettling way, but you know it means well, right? "You are quite endeering, little one. Where are your parents?"

You look down. "Mommy and Daddy didn't want me anymore, so they sent me here telling me that I would meet a new friend."

Your new friend frowns, and kneels. "Get on my back, little one. We shall go back to my home, and feast on wild berries!"

You smiled, and carefully get on their back, clinging to their neck. Feeling a slight bit of sleepiness, you snuggle into their warm coat, and fall into the depths of slumber.

Waking up, you look around me. You are in a warm cabin, an elderly lady with antlers and kind eyes next to you, sewing a tunic for you.

"Little one, my name is Reina, but you may call me Grandmother. I have decided I will teach you, and you will be my new assistant. Now, can you stand up and try this tunic on?"

You tried it on, and giggled, the soft material formed around you in a way that fit perfectly.

As the night grew darker, you crawled back into bed, and fell asleep, eager for your new life of guarding the forest. Maybe Grandmother is gentle towards humans, but you will not be for their adults.

You were barely 5 years old, yet you were condemned to the forest of terror for your strange appearance.

After all, it wasn't your fault you had wolf-like features, was it?
