hes so funny
Iā€™m tired of people acting like Zhongli is a serious and chill guy who would never cause problems on purpose as if he isnā€™t one of the biggest menaces out of the Seven. He used to throw mountains at Venti for annoying him. He, the god of history, starts fights among historians for shits and giggles. He tried to gaslight the Traveler into thinking he was totally not at the Chasm guys really Aether/Lumine you must be seeing things maybe you should go see Baizhu. When Qiqi wanted ā€œCocogoatā€ milk he was like ā€œOh yeah sure totally letā€™s go look for itā€ knowing damn well it was a wild goose chase. He made the Traveler sing to a flower and then was like ā€œOh would you look at thatā€ when a Whooperflower jumped out to maul them. I love him. Heā€™s like a cat pushing things off the counter to see how people react. I would pay to see him interact directly with Neuvillette because I know for a fact heā€™d get on that manā€™s nerves and argue about water tasting just to feel something. Furina used freedom from godhood to take a nap and Zhongli used it to give psychic damage to anyone who talks to him longer than 5 minutes. Iconic.
#LMAOOOOO EXACTLY#ā€œI am not debating I'm merely stating a factā€ SIR#hes so funny#what a menace#he saves xiao and then goes#ā€œhuhā€#theres a reason why he gets away with so many things#people think hes serious and ā€œzhongli would never do that!!!ā€ meanwhile zhongli lives for the crazy theories people come up about him#HE ACTIVELY LISTENS TO PEOPLE ARGUE ABOUT HIM#and then goes ā€œno ur wrong actuallyā€ and also ā€œthe source: it came to me in a dream#yeah he has serious moments#but also im pretty sure 50% of him not bringing his wallet is intentional its not like hes actually in debt#But he would 100% debate neuvillette that ā€œhe cant judge the lord of geo because he's dead lmaoā€#maybe he has a lot of unresolved issues#but look hes like venti's best friend#but he gets away with everything that venti doesnt bc he dresses up nicer#He has a sense of humor and is also an omniscient deity with thousands of years of experience this is peak menace material#every bit of him acting like ā€œoh woe I don't understandā€ was definitely at least a bit intentional#I love him#Zhongli is so unhinged#come on. he prepared a whole fake body and threw it down for his ā€œfake deathā€ like#There are so many ways and he chose to throw down a fake body#How many times do u think hes secretly pranked hu tao back and hu tao just. doesnt ever question zhongli#look hes had so much trauma let him be a menace#duality: having the craziest trauma and also the wildest most insane incognito shenanigans#LMAO REMEMBER WHEN HE LAUGHED AT THE QIXING GOING ā€œrex lapis failed a divine trialā€#zhongli: woah no way haha#I bet he would love to hear all the crazy origin theories people come up about him#and then be like ā€œlmao thats nothingā€#ā€œdont be a coward go biggerā€

Tumblr media
ā€holy shit!ā€
the raspy tilt of satoruā€™s voice echoes throughout the bedroom, stirring you from your comfortable slumber. a soft groan spills from suguruā€™s lips, deep and husky, as he pulls you closer into his embrace ā€” smoothing a warm palm down the back of your head. trying to soothe you back to sleep, muttering under his breath.
ā€satoru, itā€™s too early for this...ā€
ā€itā€™s snowing!ā€ said man continues, unperturbed. unmistakably giddy. heā€™s standing by the window, hands pressed flush against the cold glass; entirely entranced by the sight in front of his cerulean eyes.Ā
your eyelids begin to flutter. a tiny tug of your subconscious, a pang of something excited flowing through your veins, an alert to your sleepy brain.
(snowing.)
with groggy movements, you wriggle out of suguruā€™s grasp ā€” a displeased grumble leaves his throat, almost a whine ā€” allowing you to scramble out of bed. ā€really?ā€ you chirp, rubbing the sleep from beneath your eyes. a raspy, meek little voice spilling into the air.
satoru grins, watching you move closer, watching as a tiny gasp pushes past your lips. watching as your droopy eyes widen ā€” brightening, glittering, starlight and snowflakes painted on the interior of your iris. a breathtaking sight, he thinks.Ā
maybe even more breathtaking than the winter wonderland reflected in it; beyond the pure opaque frosting of the windowā€™s glass, out into your backyard, buried beneath a thick layer of snow. soft and fluffy, covering the city, suguruā€™s long-frozen tulip garden, the bare branches of your apricot tree. every roof in sight. all of it dyed a pure white, glittering in the light of a morning sun yet to fully rise, tiny snowflakes descending down to earth.Ā
itā€™s beautiful.Ā
satoru loves winter. he always has, he thinks. it comes to him as a memory ā€” blurred at the edges, gleaming even still, the first time he saw those snowflakes up close. someone held him in their arms, he recalls. a warmth long faded.Ā
all he can properly remember is that sight. one that knocked the breath from out his tiny lungs, all glitter and something almost other-worldly, something frightening in its majesty. like it broke through a rift in the stratosphere.Ā
the first snow of the year.
and heā€™s loved it ever since; the soft crunch of snow beneath his feet, an air heavy with the scent of cinnamon and candied apples, bouts of laughter to be heard from faraway apartments. red and green glimmers of artificial light, sweet frosting on the christmas cake he would always gobble up alone in his room. the cold wind, nipping at his bare fingers ā€” a reminder of his capacity for ache.
there are lots of things to love. lots of memories to cherish. and every single year, he gets the chance to make more.
like this; the light in your eyes, the smile on your face, the excitement in how hurriedly you turn to meet his giddy gaze. a nostalgic kind of joy simmering in the space between you.
and before either of you know it, satoruā€™s pulling you towards the hallway, intent on dragging you outside to see it all up close. almost tripping over his agumon plush, lying unassumingly on the floor, kicked off the bed once again.Ā
(probably by satoru himself, though heā€™ll always insist it was suguruā€™s doing. overcome by his jealousy, surely, unable to stand the sight of his cute husband cuddling up to a plushie instead of him. satoru understands, he does ā€” he feels the same when he sees you hug that 3ā€™0 cat plushie of yours.
and, sure, maybe once or twice heā€™s been lucid enough to register the subconscious kick of his leg and agumonā€™s subsequent fall to the floor ā€” but heā€™ll still blame suguru in the morning. if only to see the way said man rolls his eyes, clicks his tongue, maybe flicks his forehead if heā€™s really lucky.)
high on the spirit of christmas, spurred on by childlike elation and sleep-deprivation, you stumble towards the door. satoru pulls one of his jackets over your shoulders, delighting in the way your hands donā€™t fully reach through the sleeves. wrapping you up in a cozy scarf when suguru shouts at you both to dress warmly, barely awake and already tired of your antics.
and the moment you step through the door, satoru is engulfed by it. that mystical, mystical feeling.Ā
a little lonely, a little too satisfying to pass up. a cold breeze that nips at his fingertips, snowflakes that brush against his cheeks and stick to his white lashes. a warm hand in his, as you cling to his side, shuddering ā€” but smiling, as you look up at the sky, putting a hand out just to feel the snowflakes melt against the skin of your palm.
he feels you let go of him, but doesnā€™t mention it. a little too mesmerized to tug you back. dipping his toes into the bittersweet nostalgia of it all, staring at the flurry of white all around you, the skeletal branches of your apricot tree. suguruā€™s poor tulips. humming a jolly tune, subconsciously. a little delighted.
ā€” until something cold and wet hits the exposed skin of his neck.
satoru twitches, a chilling shudder trickling down his spine. the snowball just thrown at him begins to melt, droplets sticking to his nape, and he turns to you with a raise of his brow. a devilish grin on his lips, when he hears your muffled laughter, sees the crinkle of your eyes.
(youā€™re cute, he thinks. but you need to be humbled.)
ā€oh, so thatā€™s how you wanna play?ā€ he drawls, eyes gleaming with amusement. taking a step forward, reaching down to gather some snow in his palm. a wide grin on his glossy lips. ā€fine by me.ā€Ā
he's fast, but you act quickly, running towards the apricot tree with laughter in your throat. feeling the pitter patter of your heartbeat resound in your ears, as the snowball misses its mark by just a hair ā€” and you waste no time in making your own.
itā€™s a hard-fought duel. snowfall blocking your vision, nerves beginning to numb, red cheeks and runny noses as you chase each other with giddy breaths. unfortunately for you, satoruā€™s arms are unfairly long, fingers unfairly nimble, and his stamina never even seems to falter.
so before long, your energy begins to dwindle. chest heaving, hands too cold to form a proper snowball, while your husband seems like he hasnā€™t even broken a sweat. they just keep on coming, snowball after snowball colliding with the fabric of your jacket, and when one of them hits your collarbone you squeal ā€” falling backwards, right into a fresh pile of snow.
satoru moves forward, a triumphant smirk on his handsome face. youā€™re out of breath, and your hands are red, and heā€™s fairly certain youā€™re gonna catch a cold. suguruā€™s going to scold him, but right now all he can think of is you. the frown youā€™re wearing, the little huff that slips from your lips.
ā€ready to admit defeat, sweetheart?ā€ he practically purrs, standing above you with his hands on his hips. smug. and you grin right back.
ā€never.ā€
a hum. something glimmers in his eyes, a devious little glint, and you come to regret your decision when satoru gathers a heap of snow with his overgrown arms; only to drop it all on top of you. too tired to fight back, all you can do is shield your face, silently accepting your fate.
a shiver wracks through your body, and satoru almost feels bad. just a tiny bit. but then you finally relent, murmuring bitterly under your breath. ā€fine, fineā€¦ā€ a soft pout forms on your lips. ā€you win.ā€
and satoru smiles. crouching down to meet you at eye level, on his knees in front of you. thereā€™s a teasing mirth in his eyes, when he reaches out to cup the fat of your cheek. ā€thatā€™s all i wanted to hear, sweet pea,ā€ he drawls, trying not to giggle when you exaggeratedly roll your eyes.
his voice curls down an octave when he continues, leaning forward to brush his nose against yours. hot breath against your chilled skin. ā€now, for my prizeā€¦ā€
his lips meet yours, sweet and chaste ā€” a little cheeky. you scoff into the kiss, but satoruā€™s smile only grows. honeyed, a little bit adoring. his tongue flits out to lick at your cold bottom lip.
he lingers, for a bit. like heā€™s trying to savour the way you taste, faded strawberry chapstick sticking to his lips, smudged against your own. and you sigh, softly, melting a little, comforted by the fleeting warmth that blossoms on your face.Ā
when he's finally satisfied, having dragged his prize out to its completion, satoru helps you up. brushing snowflakes off your jacket, cradling your ice-cold hands in his. theyā€™re not faring much better, but a worried tug of his heartstrings compels him to warm you up. bringing them to his lips, hot breath fanning over your skin, tender little kisses against the knots of your knuckles.
you canā€™t help but blush, and a raspy chuckle flows from out his lips.Ā
hazy morning sunshine licks at the branches of the apricot tree behind you, illuminating the contours of your face, the shine of his eyes. a blue smudge on a canvas painted white and gray. the air smells of pine cones and something smokey, crisp. it courses through his burning lungs when he inhales, exhales, a breath of vapour that scatters up into the sky.
satoru loves winter. always has. but now, heā€™s certain he loves it even more.
because now, he has two people to share it with. two people to drag out into the snow, two people whose hands he can tenderly warm up, two people whoā€™ll laugh and sigh at his antics and still indulge him. two people to pelt with snowballs.Ā
what more could a man want?
ā€hey, idiots!ā€Ā
the voice that echoes throughout the air is exasperated, a little teasing. yet fond. suguruā€™s got his hair tied into a messy half done bun, black turtleneck sweater enunciating his broad chest and the curve of his waist. thereā€™s a fatigue in his eyes, the creases of his face, but a lazy smile is playing at his lips.
ā€iā€™m making breakfast,ā€ he shouts, voice deep and smokey and soft even still. ā€come in and warm up before you catch a cold.ā€
ā€is that any way to speak to your husband and spouse?ā€ satoru chimes back, a melodic lilt to his sugarsweet voice. something satisfied. pleased.
suguru shoots him an unimpressed look, but his eyes soften. melting a little, at the words that spill from satoruā€™s lips, as if they were always meant to be there.Ā
(husband. spouse. suguru wills himself not to smile.)
with matching grins on your faces, the two of you stumble back towards the door. snow crunching beneath your feet, a happy noise pushing past your lips when you collide with the warmth of your husbandā€™s chest.
ā€look, suguru. isnā€™t it pretty?ā€ you chirp, smiling brightly. an expression he mirrors ā€” brushing some snow from the top of your head, warm palms caressing your cold skin, setting a mental reminder to scold satoru later. sparing a brief glance at the snowy veil over reality.
then he exhales. a fond hum. ā€it is.ā€
satoru joins you both by the door, stretching out his lanky limbs. tousled hair, wet strands sticking to his skin, reddened cheeks and a signature pout. ā€suguru, my hands are cold,ā€ he whines. ā€warm ā€™em up for me?ā€
a click of his tongue. ā€shouldā€™ve put some gloves on, satoru.ā€
a hum buzzes in your throat, and you put your hands out. itchy, a little dry. a sad frown tugs at your lips when you speak. ā€my hands are also cold.ā€
and, like clockwork, suguruā€™s eyes soften. a coo tiptoeing on his tongue, engulfing your hands in his larger ones. ā€aw, cā€™mere, my loveā€¦ā€ his breath fans over your frozen fingertips. ā€letā€™s get you warmed up, hm?ā€
satoru gasps, a hand on his chest, and you stifle a giggle. heā€™s acting, you both know, being a little drama queen. he knows youā€™re just exaggerating suguruā€™s double standard as a bit, that your husband would probably set himself on fire to warm either of you up.
despite that, his voice comes out thoroughly offended. ā€oh, i see how it is,ā€ he huffs, walking past the both of you. pouting deeply. ā€you hate me. you hate me, and you want me to die. i understand.ā€
ā€satoru,ā€ you coo. he hmphs, but stills, waiting for you to wrap your arms around him. and you do ā€” a little too eager to appease your giant baby of a husband.
ā€weā€™re just joking around,ā€ you assure him, holding back a humorous chuckle. squeezing his waist with palpable fondness. ā€love you sooo much. you know that.ā€
satoru stays silent. but he cranes his neck, to meet suguruā€™s gaze, standing just behind him. narrowing his cobalt eyes ā€” a meaningful look.
suguru sighs.
ā€yes, yes. we love you oh so much.ā€ he takes a step forward, ruffling the white head of hair by the door. a lazy smile on his lips. ā€now behave and go change out of your pyjamas. theyā€™re soaked.ā€
his voice is teasing. exasperated, more than a little condescending. but itā€™s suguru, so satoru accepts it ā€” following you both into the warmth of your home. the scent of cinnamon and vanilla hangs heavy in the air, a hint of espresso and firewood, lulling him into a sweet state of tranquility. rich with comfort, safety.
he changes out of his wet clothes, pulling a black hoodie over his head before waltzing into the kitchen. and you do the same, emerging from your bedroom in one of suguruā€™s cozy sweaters, knitted and smelling of bergamot.Ā
when suguru notices, his gaze shifts into something fond. palpable. a look satoru always finds in the scope of those warm eyes, amber and cedar bleeding into something sweet, only ever directed at the two of you. a look said man assumes goes unnoticed. heā€™s not as slick as he thinks.
the kitchen simmers with hazy sunlight and gentle movements, something sleepy and kind. satoru is a little bit enamored with it; from bowls of cat food by the corner, to camellias by the windowsill, cookie jars and dried lemon slices, the fading scent of baked goods and wishlists stuck to the fridge.
(yours and satoruā€™s are filled with scribbles, new ideas popping up daily, while suguruā€™s is almost entirely blank; mostly necessities, one or two things heā€™d like for himself.
and then, of course, the same thing he writes at the top of his wishlist every year; some peace and quiet.)
suguru shuffles around the kitchen, long strands of black hair cascading down his back, swaying with his movements. he sends you both an affectionate glance when you step in, already in the process of making satoru his cup of hot chocolate ā€” topped with marshmallows and whipped cream, colorful sprinkles in the shape of tiny stars, a touch of cinnamon. satoru licks his lips.
when it's finished, the cup is promptly handed to him, paired with a tender kiss to his forehead. and suguru starts the meticulous brewing of your coffee, steady hands, finely chosen coffee beans, the low purring of the espresso machine. soothing.
thatā€™s when you attach yourself to his back. wrapping your arms around his waist, a sleepy yawn muffled into the fabric of his turtleneck. he places a big palm on your hand, thumb smoothing over your knuckle, and you nuzzle into him silently. suguru smiles.
ā€still sleepy, baby?ā€ he questions, a coo on the tip of his tongue. his voice is soft, palpably so, buzzing with warmth and safety and something that makes you want to stay cuddled up to him forever.
satoru senses an opportunity to insert himself into the conversation, and forces out a yawn of his own. stretching his limbs like a big cat, blinking drowsily, eyelashes fluttering. hoping itā€™ll come off as endearing. ā€mhm.ā€Ā
but suguru shoots him an unimpressed look. ā€not you,ā€ he tuts, patting your arm, ā€this baby. i wasnā€™t asking you.ā€
a pout. ā€why are you so mean to me?ā€ he whines, shooting you a doe-eyed look. bottom lip jutting out slightly, a feigned glassiness to his eyes. ā€sweetie, tell your husband to stop being so mean to me.ā€
you smile. indulgent, as always. ā€don't be so mean to him, suguru. you know heā€™s sensitive.ā€
a sigh. deep, tinged with exhaustion. satoru shares an amused look with you ā€” stifling a shared chuckle at suguruā€™s exasperation.
and suddenly, he feels something warm flutter in his ribcage. a sunkissed butterfly, wings brushing against his ribs, coaxing his lips into curling up. unmistakable fondness, almost too much to bear. the need to reach out and touch you creeps up on him, a hunger he canā€™t deny, but he holds back; you look comfy like that, curled up against suguruā€™s spine. so he only inches closer, without a word.Ā
his husband casts him a glance, but satoru stays silent. lips pursed, waiting for something. patient.
and suguru relents. he reaches a hand out, to tuck a stray strand of white hair behind his ear ā€” an excuse to touch him. a silent apology.Ā
(i'm sorry, you big baby.)
satoru grins.
you shift from foot to foot, leaning over to see what suguru is doing, pressing buttons and taking two ceramic cups out from a wall cabinet. your eyes zero in on a particular shelf, narrowing in suspicion, before flitting over to meet your husbandā€™s gaze.
ā€satoru, did you use up all my peppermint sweeteners again?ā€
he stiffens. just a tad, before swallowing a gulp ā€” followed by a silly chuckle, sheepish and performative, eager to wiggle his way out of your cold gaze. ā€ā€¦ which sweeteners do you mean, honey?ā€
ā€donā€™t pull the ā€™honeyā€™ card.ā€
ā€and donā€™t play dumb, either.ā€
a pout crosses his lips. betrayed. ā€suguru, whoā€™s side are you even on?ā€
said man gives him a look. that one look, characteristically suguru, the same one he always sends satoruā€™s way. one so thoroughly unimpressed it makes him feel like the worldā€™s biggest clown.Ā
and satoru plays along. your dutiful, beloved clown, his posture wilting like a sad flower. suguru exhales through his nose.
ā€donā€™t steal their sweeteners.ā€ he smooths a thumb over your knuckle, absentminded, meeting the cold metal of the ring on your finger. smiling a little at the sensation. ā€buy your own.ā€
satoru huffs, drawn out and childish. crossing his arms, leaning against the kitchen counter. ā€ah, i see how it is. leaving your sweet husband to buy his own sweeteners?ā€ he clicks his tongue. ā€chivalry is dead.ā€
you bite back a little chuckle ā€” satoru recognizes the cute noise you make when you do ā€” and suguru rolls his eyes. fondly, always. ā€remind me next time i go to the store and iā€™ll consider it.ā€
ā€hmph.ā€
suguru is smiling. itā€™s small, but genuine, worth a thousand words. and you are, too, the vague crinkle of your eyes giving you away. even as you bury your face in the curve of suguruā€™s back.
and ah, satoru thinks. there it is again.Ā
that sickeningly sweet sense of deja vu; the sensation of a certain something flourishing deep inside his chest. warming him up, trickling through his frost-bitten veins. that one little itch he never manages to satisfy, that never goes away, something that took root inside his heart years ago ā€” watered by the sweet looks on your faces.
this everyday slice of heaven, right in front of him, that heā€™s been greedily partaking in ever since he moved in with you. since he married you.
(married.)
sometimes he still canā€™t believe it.Ā
ā€itā€™ll be done in a minute,ā€ suguru hums, and satoru blinks. broken out of his syrupy stupor. ā€you two go wait by the kotatsu, okay? must be cold, poor babies.ā€Ā
and, as always, his voice is a little teasing. a tiny bit condescending, if you really strain your ears, in typical suguru fashion. but itā€™s laced with a touch of sweetness; one that would be too much for either of you to stomach, if it were to drip out of his lips with nothing to water it down. so satoru accepts it. welcomes it, even.
and you follow his suggestion. making your way towards the living room, satoru trailing behind you, continuously enamored by every little thing he sees. every little piece of the home youā€™ve built for yourselves.
your living room is cozy. several potted plants seated here and there, a thick quilt to cover the kotatsu, a bowl of satsumas on top of it. a sleepy cat on your couch, golden sunshine ruffling her fur. a santa hat lies beside her, and satoru snags it without much thought. pulling it over his head.
his gaze shifts to the christmas tree over in the corner, eyes filling with a childlike kind of wonder. itā€™s decorated to completion, weighed down by colourful ornaments and lights, a star at the very top. suguru cut it himself, bringing the biggest and prettiest one he could find back home.
(satoru had gone with him. partially to help carry it back, mostly to get a glimpse of suguru's biceps flexing with the swing of the axe. heā€™s a simple man.)
and beneath it, presents are already beginning to pile up. carefully wrapped, in bows and silken paper, growing more each day. shattering suguruā€™s hopes of maybe having a more lowkey christmas this year ā€” but satoru couldnā€™t be more relieved. this is the only time of year you let him get away with pampering you both to his heartā€™s content.
a smile blooms on his lips. he plops down on the floor, crossing his legs, right as suguru walks in with a coffee pot in hand. their gazes overlapping.
and something mischievous begins to brew within the blue of his eyes, something that makes suguru narrow his own. satoru pats his thigh, twice, a coo on the tip of his tongue. santa hat sitting pointedly on top of his head, fluffing up his hair.
ā€cā€™mere, suguru! sit on santaā€™s lap.ā€
ā€ā€” youā€™re disgusting.ā€
the words are playful, but a pout still slips into the curve of satoruā€™s lips, and he huffs out a displeased little breath. his husband pretends not to hear it, so satoru turns to you ā€” sitting so prettily to his right, already anticipating his next move. puppy dog eyes on full display, he gives you a soft tilt of his head, snowy tufts of hair falling over his eyes.
and you sigh, in what he knows is resignation. his faux pout turning into a satisfied grin.
you curl up in satoruā€™s lap without much of a fuss, letting him circle his arms around you. an indulgent smile rests on your lips, but he knows you love this; his broad chest against your back, the heat of the kotatsu warming your feet. breathing in the fading scent of your shampoo, he leaves a peck on the sensitive spot right behind your ear, and you try not to shudder.
then satoru smiles. squeezing you, lightly, sweetly, eyes rich with honeyed affection. voice dripping with playful endearment. ā€there we go,ā€ he coos. ā€what does my angel want for christmas, hm?ā€Ā
ā€i want you to stop stealing my peppermint sweeteners,ā€ comes your answer. instantaneous.
silence fills the room. a moment passes. outside your frosted windows, a bird takes flight from the branches of your apricot tree. and satoru clicks his tongue.
ā€ā€¦ santa can only do so much, baby.ā€
two deep scoffs fill the air, heavy and bemused. one from you, one from suguru. satoru only giggles.
ā€just kidding!ā€ he chirps, planting a kiss on the top of your head. ā€donā€™t you worry. santaā€™ll give you all the peppermint sweeteners you could ever want.ā€Ā
you raise a brow, exhaling amusedly. craning your head to meet his gaze. ā€and he wonā€™t end up using them all himself?ā€
ā€of course not! blasphemy.ā€Ā
a moment passes.
ā€ā€¦ maybe one or two. as a treat.ā€
a string of protests slips from your lips, and satoru tries not to burst into a fit of giggles. suguru just watches, silently, smiling lightly as he pours hot coffee into two ceramic cups. steam wafting up to the ceiling, a cat jumping down from the couch to curl up in his lap. he places one in front of you, not taking a single sip of his own until he hears you hum blissfully at the taste ā€” pink lips against white ceramic. a bitter taste on his tongue, sweetened by your approval.
then he starts peeling three satsumas, absentmindedly, and satoru swallows down the love-ridden honey choking up the back of his throat. pretending the domesticity of such a simple action doesnā€™t melt his heart down to the marrow.Ā
he turns his attention towards the window. frost sticking to the glass like spider-woven webs, soon to be melted by the glow of the mellow winter sunrays. flitting in through the curtains, cascading over the room, splattering across the floorboards. framing the hue of your hair, the smile on suguruā€™s lips.
and a memory comes to him. sudden, hazy, faded at the edges. ghosting his subconscious.
he remembers the frost, the biting wind, the frightening majesty of the snow that fell that day. breaking into his world through a rift in the stratosphere. he remembers the contrasting warmth of the person who held him, who cradled him close; the soft lull of a womanā€™s voice.Ā
for a moment, satoru thinks he can almost, almost see it before him. hear those gentle words, see her tired smile. why was she always so tired?
(look, satoru. isnā€™t it pretty?)
ā€” he canā€™t recall how it sounded. if it was melodic and soft, or raspy and broken, happy or sad. but he does recall that it made him feel safe. safe enough to find comfort in a sight so other-worldly, so very foreign.
it shouldā€™ve been frightening, but it wasnā€™t. the first snowfall satoru ever saw knocked the breath from out his lungs, stole his heart with cold hands, left him with a suffocating nostalgia.Ā but the memory is precious.
and now, he feels that sense of other-worldliness in this; a kotatsu for three, a warm house, peeled satsumas and promises of a christmas cake soon to be baked. one lovely spouse in his lap, the other gazing at him with that fond look he always assumes goes unnoticed. a cocoon of safety ā€” a ghost he doesnā€™t need to chase anymore.
warmth. enough warmth to make up for the snow and frost outside your home, all the experiences he missed out on as a child. warmth, warmth, warmth. funny, how that happens to be satoruā€™s favorite thing about winter.Ā
he looks at the two of you, hoping you wonā€™t pay any mind to his silence. for once, he hopes youā€™ll stay wrapped up in your awful, awful coffee, so bitter that just looking at it makes his throat feel dry. just so he can get away with admiring you for a little longer. from the contours of suguruā€™s face, to the skin of your collarbone, to the rings on your fingers. ones he put there himself.Ā
and ah, satoru thinks, there it is again. again and again, as always, forever. that warm, warm feeling flourishing in the depths of his chest.Ā
he hopes it never goes away.

+ Will probably cockily tell you you'll just have to get used to it, he's a god afterall so it's expected that he'll have many loyal fans all vying for his attentionā€”
+ It's all a farce
+ In reality, he's kind of in shock that you'd really be jealous over him, the useless puppet discarded by his own motherā€”but that's his unresolved insecurity and mommy issues talking
+ He'll keep up the faƧade and tease you for a while until he realizes you're genuinely upsetā€”then he'll find some roundabout way to tell you that you have nothing to worry about, he only has eyes for you...of course he'll never directly admit that, though
"Hah, you're jealous? What a foolish human emotionā€”of course I'll be adored by thousands..."
The Wanderer cuts himself off as he takes in your tense form, brows furrowed and eyes looking anywhere but him as you quietly seethe. His chest clenches in that weird way it only seems to do when you're involved.
"Wait...don't tell me you're actually angry...?"
You don't show any signs you even heard his question and the Wanderer sighs dramatically, averting his own gaze to hide his reddening cheeks as he mumbles his next words.
"You have nothing to worry about, idiot...you're way above any of those other weaklings anyway."
ā Xiao
+ I'm sorry but he literally is incapable of understanding that you're jealous
+ Like...he can barely even process that you like him, let alone recognize the advances of another random human who is interested in him. The time he even spends with others is extremely limited unless you're involved so there aren't many chances for anyone to talk to him
+ If it's something like another adepti or half-adepti, like Ganyu, who he's been spending a lot more time with lately training, you might feel insecure by your own mortality, which Xiao can somewhat understand but still doesn't get the jealousy part
+ Tries his best to try to comfort you though, even if it means shyly asking Zhongli or Verr Goldet
+ Surprisingly ends up coming to the best solutionā€”spending more time with you
You nearly jump out of your skin when you turn to find the figure of your boyfriend standing behind you on the balcony of Wangshu Inn. You're certain he wasn't there just five minutes ago.
"Huh? Shouldn't you be training Ganyu today...?" You ask, feeling slightly sick at the mention of the pretty half-adeptus girl. She was a sweetheart and a great friend but you can't help but to think about how much time she's been spending with Xiao. You're sure she doesn't have any ulterior motives but you can't help but to think about how much prettier and stronger she is compared to you. Surely Xiao sees it too...
"We agreed to take a break for today," Xiao immediately answers, slowly stepping forward until his cheat is nearly touching the back of your arm, so close you can smell the faint traces of his natural scentā€”something fresh and crisp like the mountain air.
"Instead...I want to spend some time with youā€”if you'll allow it." He says softly. You momentarily freeze, not used to Xiao initiating dates. Unperturbed, he continues speaking.
"I thought we could do that mortal activity you told me about before. I think it was called...a picnic?"
ā Zhongli
+ The god who has ruled over humans for over 2,000 yearsā€”of course he's familiar with such a common emotion like jealousy. Even if he himself has yet to experience it
+ He would never assume you were jealous unless you openly tell him about it
+ But then he's quick to assuage your worries and maybe even propose some sort of compromise that can satisfy you both
+ Spends a night absolutely spoiling you until you hardly remember you were ever jealous in the first place, if that's what you so desire
"Ah, it seems you may have misunderstood my relationship with the funeral director, I apologize if I caused you any discomfort," Zhongli tells you earnestly, gently holding your hands in his own, much larger ones and holding your gaze so intensely you find it impossible to look away.
"Now tell me, my dear, how may I settle your worries? Perhaps we should take some time away, just the two of us?"
ā Childe
+ Idk how you even got jealous in the first place cause this man is glued to your hip
+ Slightly flattered when he recognizes your signs of jealousy cause he just sees it as proof of how much you care about him
+ It may feel a bit demeaning at first but he will not take your jealousy seriously. He baby talks, pinches your cheeks, and teases you but will not show any genuine concernā€”not because he doesn't care about your feelings, but because he's so sure that he only has eyes for you that he thinks your jealously is completely unreasonable in the first place
+ As a big fan of PDA, he takes the advantage to be more touchy and affectionate with you in public under the guise of "showing everyone he's yours"
+ If anything, he's the one whose always jealous when another person takes so much as a second of your attentionā€”but you don't need to know that
"Aww, is my prince/ss pouting now? Ahaha, don't look at me like that!" Childe effortlessly dodges the elbow you aim at his ribs after he pinches at the fat of your cheek for the third time today.
Not perturbed in the least, Childe sticks himself to your side and continues to grin down at you, uncaring of the strangers who glance at you two with strange looks as you make your way through the busy streets of Liyur Harbor.
"Here, how about I make it up to you and we go on a lunch date? My treat!"
ā Venti
+ Another one who doesn't take your concerns seriously
+ However, unlike most of the other men, it's pretty reasonable to be jealous with how Venti talks to everyone
+ He's naturally romantic and seems to possess no clear boundaries, leading to him saying things that could be construed as flirtatious without him even realizing it
+ When he's tipsy on dandelion wine, it's not unusual to see him belting out ballads and serenading anyone nearby willing to give him the time of dayā€”though, in reality, his love songs are all actually written about you
"Oh, my windblume is feeling a bit jealous?"
You don't bother providing a response but Venti doesn't seem to need one.
"Ehehe, so cute," he coos, shamelessly wrapping his arms around you. Any feelings of jealousy you hold are quickly being replaced with embarrassment at how other patrons in the crowded bar frequently glance at you and your loud boyfriend.
"No worries, my love, this poor bard's heart only beats for you! I'll even prove it with this song I wrote..."
ā Albedo
+ It's Sucrose, isn't it?
+ They spend all those hours locked up in a small lab room in the depths of Dragonspineā€”its only natural that you'd feel suspicious right?
+ Wrong
+ When he's not with you, Albedo literally only thinks about his experiemnts or drawing. In fact, the times you and Albedo are together are really the only time anyone ever sees Albedo actually listen to someone outside of the Knights of Favonius and talk about things that aren't directly related to alchemy
+ As the so-called "chalk prince," it's not that uncommon for people to find him physically attractive and try their luckā€”but any deeper feelings usually vanish when they realize he has no interest in them. That and his blank stares can get rather unsettling...
+ If you do get jealous about Albedo being around anyone, it will eventually go away on its own as you realize this man is literally incapable of recognizing flirting
+ (Also, Sucrose is literally an angel and would never jeopardize your relationship. Like, she actively ships you guys together, plsā€”)
"...which is a particularly unique property for this chemical given it's electronegativity. In factā€”oh, [Name], what are you doing here?"
You try very hard not to laugh at the relieved expression the woman Albedo was previously lecturing shoots you. She wastes no time slipping out of the lab while Albedo is distracted, his ocean deep eyes staring at you with a mix of surprise and quiet adoration.
"Ah, it's about lunch time and I don't have any commissions today so I thought we could go get something to eat together. Sorry if I'm disturbing youā€”"
"Not at all," Albedo interrupts, quickly putting away the glass vial he previously held and removing his latex gloves.
"A visit from you is never a disturbance," Albedo admits plainly, oblivious to the way his words make your chest squeeze.
"Now let's go. If we hurry, we might be able to make it to that place you like before they get crowded."
ā Tighnari
+ Lmao what are you jealous of, a flower?
+ This is another Science Manā„¢ļø who literally sees nothing but his work. Unless there's a rare sentient species of seductive mushrooms in Sumeru with it's sights set on fennec fox boys, you have nothing to worry about
+ Collei sees him as something akin to an older brother figure and Tighnari is too sassy for anyone else to get close unless they're interested in joining the forest watchers
+ If you tell him you're jealous, he's probably going to call you an idiot for even thinking he's interested in anyone else
Tighnari looks almost annoyed at your confession, glancing up from his journal only to shoot you a glare.
"Hah? Did you accidentally eat some hallucinogenic mushrooms again? I don't have enough time entertain things like that. What a ridiculous accusation."
Annoyance bubbles up inside you but, before you can act on it, Tighnari is already standing from his desk, striding over to you quickly to gently pull you along with him.
"Now come with me. I found an interesting flower on the outskirts of camp I think you'd like."
The proud grin highlighted by the sparkle in his eyes as he looks up at you quickly cuts off any protests you were going to make.

Ethel's Vicious Mockery Analysis
(Major thanks to Aloija for the Dialog Parser and Roksik for doing the parsing, from the Down by the River Discord Server!)
I love when Ethel uses vicious mockery in the game, because I feel like it gives insight into the characterā€™s insecurities, you know? So letā€™s further dissect that mockery.
WYLL
ā€œOh, look! It's daddy's regret.ā€
ā€œFraud of the Frontiers!ā€
ā€œDo you think losing that eye made you a hero?ā€
Wyll wants to be seen as a hero so badlyā€¦ and Iā€™m starting to think that has a little something to do with daddy issues. This ā€œdaddyā€™s regretā€ line from Ethel, matched with one of Wyllā€™s desires when confronted by the secret laboratory mirror being his fatherā€™s forgiveness, certainly says there is something unresolved thereā€¦
GALE
ā€œI can smell what's under those bandages, wizard. You're all rot and ruin.ā€
ā€œCome to greet death early? You'll be a lovely spectacle.ā€
ā€œWho would be jealous of you, apprentice?ā€
The first two arenā€™t anything newā€”weā€™re already aware of Galeā€™s condition after all. But why would Ethel call him an apprentice? Is he lying about how great a wizard he once was? Or maybe itā€™s just because heā€™s lost all his powers, and sheā€™s teasing him about that.
SHADOWHEART
ā€œYou're so far up Shar's cake you can't see straight.ā€
ā€œWhy would Shar love you when no one else does?ā€
ā€œYou're no complex puzzle. Just a sad little girl.ā€
These to me, at least, speak of an undiscussed bubbling crisis of faith Shadowheart may be undergoing. And I am very interested in the second line above. Shadowheart is the type of person to keep everyone at armā€™s length, and yet at the same time, it seems from this, desperately wants to be loved? That matches up with her ā€œshe took me in when no one else wouldā€ answer when asked why she became a worshipper of Shar in the first place. So it seems to me, like Shadowheart experiencing compassion from another person, possibly for the first time in her memory, is leading her to question her faith in Shar.
LAEā€™ZEL
ā€œA toad with a tadpole! How fitting.ā€
ā€œYour people will never take you back - illithid scum.ā€
ā€œDo you miss kissing Vlaakith's feet, gith?ā€
Laeā€™zelā€™s biggest desire is to become kithā€™rak ā€“ we know this. But more to that, I think her biggest desire is to be accepted and revered by her people. Ethel saying that she will never achieve this is probably Laeā€™zelā€™s greatest fear.
ASTARION
ā€œIs there still rat stuck in your teeth, slave?ā€
ā€œDeep down, you like being leashed, don't you?ā€
ā€œYou're one thirsty night away from betraying everyone.ā€
Okay, okay, okayā€¦ the first two? Ethel just being a top tier bitch. But the last oneā€¦ The last one suggests that Astarion actually does have some care for his travelling companions, if heā€™s concerned about hurting them. I think that brings a lot out of his character, because it confirms heā€™s not just a one-dimensional jerk. The glimpses of his nice side are just as genuine.
KARLACH
ā€œLet's pull your strings, infernal puppet.ā€
ā€œHappy to sell everyone's soul but your own, aren't you?ā€
ā€œWhen I'm done, even the Hells won't want you.ā€
We donā€™t know a lot about Karlach, because she isnā€™t available as a companion in Early Access. But what little we do know, adds up with what Ethel says here. We know she was caught up in the Blood War as essentially a slave to Zariel. And judging from this mockery, it seems thatā€™s left her with questioning self-worth.

Ehh..
Ok. Seriously- even if Snape wasnā€™t a spy for the order or even a death eater to begin with, and just a guy with unresolved traumatic issues in his childhood- why would he be expected to be nice to Harry?
I MEAN. Harry literally took one look at Snape (and Quirrell) in the great hall, felt his scar burn and immediately decided it was Snapeā€™s fault. He didnā€™t consider that maybe it was another teacher or maybe a student next to him. He immediately thought that Severus Snape was the reason for his scar hurting. There was no evidence to really support that theory other than the burning of the scar.
Not only that- but this student (Harry) repeatedly got in trouble, sassed Sev/talked back, and when Harry did learn that it was really Quirrell that was the one trying to steal the stone and SEVERUS WAS LITERALLY HELPING HIM THE ENTIRE TIME FROM QUIRRELL HIMSELF- he still decided to have that unfair bias towards him.
PLUS, Harry acted similarly to that of James at times (from Sevā€™s perspective). Strutting around the school as one example- he was also treated similarly to James by the other staff. Heā€™d get in trouble but he wouldnā€™t receive that bad of a punishment just detentions and he was even rewarded house points.. and not to mention McGonagall breaking the rule of first years not being allowed their own broom for Harry..
Harry also looked very similar to James (his father, for those that donā€™t know) which was likely a HUGE trigger since James not only Bullied Severus as a child but stalked, harassed, SAā€™D/S*xually harassed, and almost murdered him. Then thereā€™s the fact that he also had his motherā€™s eyes, Lily Evans, who was a childhood friend of Sev. One of his only friends until he lost her, twice. Harry looked at Sev all the time with contempt and disdain. He basically hated the man from day one when he originally saw him in the great hall. He had lilyā€™s eyes. Those eyes were the ones staring at Snape with hatred. Everyday. Until Harry finally realized how messed up that actually was in the end.
So yeah. Excuse me, but I donā€™t see any reason for Sev to even want to be nice to a kid like that. There isnā€™t any reason to be- especially when heā€™s dealing with 11-18 year olds on a daily basis, all day. They all have different maturity levels and being a teacher and teaching one grade of students is already hard enough. Imagine teaching multiple grades???? Oh and then thereā€™s the fact he was risking his life for 14+ years (probably closer to 20+ honestly) with barely any actual recognition or appreciation. He was a spy for so long and he had no one. Everyone hated him and for what? Because he was strict? So were the other staff members.
Plus if we also take into account the other aspects of teaching instead of just the actual teaching- that is a lot more work as well. Thereā€™s planning assignments, watching over the students, grading assignments and much more- and being a professor youā€™re always learning the new information that comes in on the subject(s) youā€™re teaching. Thereā€™s also staff meetings. He also had order meetings and death eater meetings. Thereā€™s also stocking his potions store, doing detention shifts. We also see that he helps patrol school grounds after curfew so thereā€™s that as well. This man has so many jobs and you expect him to be nice to some bratty 11 year old that immediately decided he was bad? Like what?
And this man is autistic coded (he was based off an autistic man so the likelihood he is autistic is pretty high and practically canon Iā€™d say but thatā€™s my own opinion and a topic for another time) OH and he is canonically extremely traumatized with zero support system and we all know prolonged childhood trauma causes multiple different kinds of disorders that will never go away (but can have symptoms lessened through therapy, which was not made available for Sev.) AND NOT TO MENTION A TEACHERS SALARY IS HORRID. This man does not get payed nearly enough to deal with Hogwarts students, order members, death eaters and the other Hogwarts staff.
GIVE SEV A BREAK ALREADY.

what do you think of the rumors about Aemond's possible betrayal of Aegon in Ep4?
Oh do I have a lot to say about this one! So here's the thing. A possible Rook's Rest betrayal situation has been a long running theory among F&B readers even before the show. In the book, Vhagar slams into Sunfyre and Meleys from above while the two are locked together fighting, and they all crash to the ground. It's unclear whether Aemond slammed them both because Vhagar was too big to maneuver in a precise way, or if he was intentionally trying to harm his brother. It's ambiguous, but when Aegon is badly injured, Aemond becomes prince regent and declares the crown looks better on him than it ever did on his brother. In Aemond's favor, he did not declare himself king, but it's also the case that in the book, Aegon had a second son, so Aemond wasn't his heir either. Declaring himself king would have been a direct usurpation of Maelor even if Aegon himself died. We also know that at the end of the Dance Aegon wanted statues made of both his brothers, Aemond and Daeron, so Aegon himself likely did not believe Aemond was responsible for his injuries. But it is ambiguous, and book!Aemond does turn out to be not very smart and not much of a team player, so in and of itself, I don't actually mind the betrayal theory so much. But I would prefer it remain a theory, that is, keep it ambiguous, but even if it is an outright betrayal, it's the execution and motivation which concern me.
In the show, Aemond has a very clear second son syndrome. Whether it's true or not, he certainly thinks he's smarter, better, more dutiful, and of course on top of all that, he has the largest dragon. Show!Aegon, on the other hand, is insecure and struggling with depression, alcoholism, and a big case of imposter syndrome. He's impulsive and reactive, wasn't properly prepared to be king, didn't particularly want to be king, but now that he is king, he's desperate not to fail. In the events leading up to the war, Aemond kills Luke in a moment that seems more rash than calculated, and this ultimately leads to Aegon's small son being decapitated by Blood and Cheese in revenge, throwing him deep into grief and rage. On top of that, Aegon is feeling undermined by his council, including Aemond, and Larys is planting the seeds of mistrust between Aegon and his brother. It's absolutely reasonable for there to be some resentment between the two and some unresolved issues that might manifest on the battlefield. Would these issues lead to an actual attempted murder? Eh, I tend to think that, in the spirit of leaving it ambiguous, Aemond might have the passing thought that he could totally "accidentally" allow Aegon to come to harm. He might even hesitate just long enough that Meleys is able to seriously wound Aegon or Sunfyre before he joins in, causing him to feel a great deal of guilt. This is my preferred scenario.
The problem I have is with how the show is framing it so far. I've never been a fan of the way the bullying storyline seemed to humanize Aemond at Aegon's expense, but it now appears as if it's being used as a motivation or justification for Aemond betraying Aegon at Rook's Rest, as well as his general shift to a darker character, which I find cliched and disappointing. At this point Aemond is a grown man by all Westerosi standards, and despite their issues, we've seem Aegon display loyalty towards Aemond more than we've seen him "bully" him. They're siblings, they're going to fight and bicker and tease, but we've seen nothing from Aegon so far that would justify murder. Maybe if your brother is going through the worst thing a person can possibly experience, losing his son in a murder that, while not your fault, happened as a retribution for your actions, perhaps you could grant him some grace, even if he makes some obnoxious comments in a brothel. I've seen so many takes which basically amount to "Aegon had it coming" as if we haven't seen Aegon absolutely distraught over the death of his child, receiving no emotional support from his family, least of all Aemond himself, and spiraling back into alcoholism and reckless behavior. Now is really not the time to get pissy about teasing. It's not about you, Aemond. A child is dead.
And in fact, we've seen Aegon be supportive of Aemond on screen in ways that we generally haven't seen Aemond support Aegon. Aegon speaks up on Aemond's behalf, inviting him into the council when Alicent wants to shut him out, and we've seen him support Aemond's battle plans, even though we know Cole and Aemond have been planning behind Aegon's back. In S1 we've seen Aegon have Aemond's back at dinner with Rhaenyra's family, and going even further back, we've seen Aegon allow Aemond to throw him under the bus about the bastard comments, taking the fall even though he was not the culprit. There is certainly jealousy and rivalry there from both sides, but as much as Aegon is an ass, it is clear he loves his brother.
Also, I think some fans, perhaps because the well was poisoned against Aegon in S1 in ways that his character has struggled to recover from, tend to read everything Aegon does uncharitably and ignore some of Aemond's more questionable behavior, granting him grace that they do not grant others. I rarely see critical analysis about Aemond the way I do about Aegon, so I'm going to be frank here for a moment. Aemond is only the "good" brother to Aegon's "bad" brother because we haven't seen him at his worst yet, but the potential is there for him to be so much worse than Aegon could ever be. Show!Aemond is thin skinned, self-centered, and a bit of a "can dish it out but can't take it" type. Aemond's assholery is more subtle (for example, Aemond's patronizing little "that's a brave thought" to Aegon in council), whereas Aegon's is loud and obnoxious, but Aemond knows how to make his insults pointed and hurtful ("Strong boys" toast, you will die screaming in flames like your father). And look no further than his reaction to Blood and Cheese to see his egotism in action. In this moment when he's supposed to be showing some level of vulnerability with the madame, he's talking about how honored he is that sempai Daemon noticed him. Mind you, this notice is what resulted in the death of his four year old nephew. His "remorse" over killing Lucerys amounts to "I do regret that business with Luke," while immediately following up with his justification, citing how they used to tease him for not having a dragon. Sincere remorse involves examining your own actions without immediately justifying them or centering yourself, and in that moment I felt no remorse from Aemond, or even sympathy for what his killing of Luke might have unleashed upon the family. Aemond hasn't even mentioned Helaena once post-B&C, and you'd think that even if he doesn't feel sorry for Aegon, surely he'd show some sympathy for his innocent sister? And yet, nothing.
So while I can't say it would be necessarily out of character for the Aemond they've been giving us in S2, I don't really like this take on Aemond at all, and I just don't find this supposed grudge against Aegon a particularly compelling justification for attempted murder. While the bullying storyline humanized Aemond in S1 as a child, keeping it going now, as a motive for harming his brother and his brother's dragon, which, lets be clear, would absolutely fuck over his entire faction, is ridiculous and unnecessary, and really kind of saps any goodwill I might have had for Aemond. I don't have any sympathy for someone who was rather mildly teased and decides his brother deserves to die for it, and it makes me feel incredibly sad for Aegon who is just getting dumped on by his entire family to the point where it's honestly kind of hard to watch. There is plenty of drama inherent in the situation already as-is. If this happened because of tensions over Storm's End and Blood and Cheese, it would still be stupid for Aemond to do, but Aemond has never been as smart as he thinks, and it would frame the betrayal in the context of the ways Aegon and Aemond have hurt each other. However, if it is framed as Aegon's comeuppance for being an asshole, Aemond's Joker moment where he goes fully dark in some sort of bullying revenge plot that he decides to enact in the middle of a war? Honestly, forget building gigantic gold covered statues, I'd be burning effigies.

Okay Iā€™ve had several days to think about it, and Iā€™m not upset about Eddieā€™s cheating storyline anymore.
Nobody asked, but HEREā€™S why.
Eddie is an incredibly traumatized character. The military experiences (+ his dead friends), losing his wife so suddenly & without closure, and a couple near death experiences will do that to you! Add that to parents trying to take his child away ON TOP OF feeling like he needs to give Christopher a mother at any and all costsā€¦? Maybe a little bit of Catholic guilt sprinkled in there too.
Season 5 was not my favorite for a myriad of reasons, but one thing I did like about it was Eddieā€™s complete mental breakdown. It felt like a long time coming... BUT. His mental breakdown didnā€™t even really scratch the surface of his issues, and there are still a lot of things he needs to face before he can truly be at peace. One of those things is Shannon.
The effect that Shannonā€™s loss had on Eddie has, in my opinion, never been explored properly. We got a little of it in season 3 with the illegal fighting, and then hints of it again when he was with Ana, but it never felt like closure to me. It felt like season 6 tried to give him closure (through Marisol), but it wasnā€™t satisfying because it was more or less a duller version of what happened with Ana. ā€œMoving onā€ for his sake, but with no real emotional repercussions. Maybe this is just a personal opinion, but his story has felt like a ticking time bomb to me since the moment he broke up with Ana. His breakdown in s5 wasnā€™t the real bomb though.
Now imagine being Eddie, a guy with a lot of unresolved guilt and feelings for a woman who died right in front of him. Imagine you see a woman with that dead wifeā€™s exact face. I can honestly say I have no fucking clue what I would do in his position. What he did- erasing Marisol in his first conversation with this lookalike Kim, then later lying to Buck to meet up with Kim- is morally not okay. Sure. Would any of us act in a rational way though?
Iā€™m not meaning to justify cheating, but I do genuinely believe this is one of the only ways that stubborn ass was going to figure out his issues in a way that might actually help him move on. Heā€™s being delusional with Kim, and once the ball drops, I believe thereā€™s a great big breakdown waiting for him on the other end.
People often accuse Eddie of being the most boring of the 118, and I hate that assessment so goddamn much. Eddie is probably one of theee most complex characters (besides Buck) in the entire show. Heā€™s self-destructive, kind, loyal, patient and impatient- heā€™s a good father and a good friend, and heā€™s FLAWED. That is why I love him so much.
My initial disappointment with him partially stems from me wanting him to have a singular season of PEACE, whichā€¦I realized wasnā€™t possible without blowing up the bomb first (wouldā€™ve preferred to disarm the bomb but Iā€™ll take what I can get).

I am as disappointed as everyone else is with the final season of The Umbrella Academy, but I also have some of my own Thoughtsā„¢ļø. Allow me to weigh in.
We can all agree that the finale was absolute dogshit, right? I've seen a lot of commentary about the character assassination of Number Five, and the cursed as fuck crack ship that should've stayed in the deep recesses of ao3, where no one could find it. But there was also absolutely no character development for any of them in the end? Not really?
Luther still has unresolved daddy issues (why else would he be squatting in the condemned building of the Academy?). And he just, what, gave up looking for his wife? Luther "loverboy" Hargreeves. The man who chased and pined for Allison almost his entire life gave up on HIS WIFE after/within six years? No way.
Diego's character basically went nowhere. Four seasons, and he still didn't come to any kind of realisation that, hey, maybe he is enough. No. If he isn't in Luther's shadow, he's insecure about his marriage, or his powers, and being "strong enough." Everything was a competition to him, even though he was the only one competing. He deserved a little bit of self-love, but apparently, "self-destruct" is all he gets.
Allison had her ups and downs, and they let her end on a fucking down? Her arch was the most disappointing. We literally see her trying to be a better, more honest person in s1, and then a human rights activist in s2. Her powers are morally grey, sure, but she had so much potential. Then she just straight up becomes a villain and has barely any redemption for it? Her character started on a high. It was natural progression for her to hit a low. But not that low. And she never really came back up from it. In six years, it seemed like she made no real effort to make up for what she did. A couple of good decisions do not make up for a multitude of bad ones.
Which brings me to Klaus. I wasn't sold on sober, germaphobe Klaus to begin with. I thought it was just a little bit too out of character. But I'll take that any day than what happened to him this season. And to his credit, his hypochondria after losing his powers at least made sense. But he'd made so much progress, not just on his sobriety but on embracing his powers rather than being afraid. (Also, he and Allison being codependent on each other like that was not healthy).
This season made Ben, as a character, pretty much pointless. From the beginning, it seemed like his death was supposed to bring the Academy together, narratively speaking. It was his "purpose" to die and become a sort of martyr to his siblings (I mean, it didn't work, so even then, Ben kinda died unnecessarily). But in reality, his death wasn't a teachable moment, it was just murder. And without Ben, the story still would have ended the same way. Any of the children born from the marigold could have brought about the cleanse, it didn't necessarily HAVE to be Ben. And with the number of timelines there were, it was probably inevitable that it would happen in at least one of them. They all died pointlessly, but Ben's deaths were especially pointless.
Viktor was about the only character that DID have some development. He finally stood up to his father and received at least some validation for his mistreatment as a kid. Not that it ended up mattering because his relationship with his siblings was practically non-existent at this point. All he'd ever wanted was to be a part of the team, and yet apparently made no effort in six years to see his siblings and actually be a part of the family. It makes no sense for his character.
I hate that Lila was a damsel in distress for most of this season. She's a grown woman who we know is fully capable of standing up for herself, but it felt like she was reduced to just her role in the family. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being a mother or a wife, but that seemed to be ALL her character was this season, when we know she's more than that. The one thing she got to herself was taken away from her coz it hurt "poor Diego's feelings šŸ„ŗ". Grow up šŸ™„. And I am not touching the other thing with a ten foot barge pole.
Now, obviously, there's Five. People have already talked about how his character was completely butchered this season. No, Five of the past would not have given up so easily. Despite the jabs and the squabbling, Five loved his family. He fought hard to get back to them when he was stranded. After a struggle like that, why the fuck WOULD he stop fighting to keep his family together?
I'm not saying all of these characters had to be good, outstanding citizens by the end of the show. But they should have at least had a journey from season one. Instead, they either went backwards or in circles. And in the end, none of it mattered anyway.
This season was so fucking stupid. It completely undermined the rest of the story. What was the point in literally anything that happened in the previous seasons if it was just leading up to all of it being erased? This is some, "and it was all a dream" bullshit, and I'm not here for it.

don't mind this too much I'm just typing out my thoughts but I feel like Haku carries around a lot of emotional baggage and this might be because of his issues with his family and maybe--if there are any--unresolved issues with Frostheim?? I know him and Tohma aren't on the best terms fs.
Anyway, I feel like whenever Haku brings up any issues from the past he talks about them so... casually? When Haku brings up Tohma in his home screen voice lines, it doesn't seem like he holds any grudges toward Tohma--if anything I read it thinking they were almost friendly with each other before I saw his campus convo w/ Tohma. It's also silly to me how when Haku brought up his family being "happy to see him gone" he didn't seem like he was bothered by it at all. I don't mean to say he was actually unbothered by it ofc I just feel like he definitely has a lot of baggage and I want to assume he tries not to ponder on it too much for his own mental health and to maybe not be a burden on others?? lowkey relatable but my take on Haku is that he definitely doesn't like to bring up his past unless it's relevant to the conversation šŸ˜ and even then he gives a vague amount of details and doesn't really seem to state his opinions on them.
I feel like his affinity 19 line kinda just reaffirmed this for me? it just seems like he bottles up a lot of his emotions so when you get really close to him he feels comfortable enough to just vent a little bit... but even so he still apologizes. it's also interesting to me how when you get closer to him with affinity he lets you in on his life a little more (his poor sleep habits, his kind of ominous level 25 line, also his mini rant about how much it must suck to have a curse. his input on that is interesting to me given that he's so close to Rui and he tells mc that he knows how to get around a curse but I digress)
my affinity with Haku is like 5 right now so I can't really speak but he's definitely one of my favorites so far so I wanted to ask an actual Haku fan what they thought!!!
regarding haku bottling things up: i agree with you that haku seems like he's carrying around a lot but tries not to think about it too much? i don't think he bottles it up on purpose, but haku does seem like he has a 'if i don't think too much about it i can pretend it didn't happen' kind of vibe. which is also what happened when we go to ask him about the clash - he doesn't want to talk about it since it brings up pretty bad memories for the ghouls.
but more so, i think he might also be a 'it already happened, so why bother thinking about it so much?' kind of person. he brings up his family being "happy to see him gone" and how they think he's an "irresponsible heir" in a pretty flippant way, which makes me think he's either refusing to think about it too much because he'll actually need to think about what will happen after he graduates from darkwick, or he's already finished processing it and is all like it is what it is, what can i do?
i'm leaning more towards the latter because of how casually he treats it and how he just drops it into conversation. it's not big enough of an issue to him that he has to keep himself from dumping it all on you. it doesn't read like a shameful secret either, just more like a part of him and his history that just is - it just slips out whenever it comes up in conversation. after all, there's nothing he can do to change it, right?
sidenote: it also makes me wonder if haku is putting in so much effort in hotarubi missions not only to make up for subaru and zenji (given that subaru has limited firepower and zenji is... zenji...) but also to prove (to who? to himself? to whoever is watching?) that he can be responsible, he can take care of his house... after all, it's not as if subaru and mc can go talk to his family and show them how responsible he actually is in taking care of hotarubi... right?
regarding higher affinity lines 19 to 23: i agree!! it seems like the closer you get to him, the more relaxed and open he seems around you. although the higher affinity lines do just read like you're just spending a lot more time in hotarubi in general - you're awake / maybe i'll take a nap / i'm going to bed... you're around hotarubi and spending so much time together with him in his room your hours start blurring together. it's really cute also when i think about him hinting in his chat he wants to take a nap with you on the veranda. haku, rest!!!!! i say, ignoring my own massive sleep debt.
regarding his affinity 24 line about being cursed: the more i read it, the more i wonder if it's not just him being sympathetic to rui and mc being cursed... what if haku has also been cursed? that's why he's so clear about the helplessness and the "why me?" that accompanies the curse... either that or he's just a really great listener and really empathetic and kind. which, given what we've seen of him, is also a very real possibility. he has a really big heart i'm gna beat his entire family up please he needs someone on his side and to see the good in him beyond what he does for others for ONCE
regarding affinity 25 line: i've been thinking about this also!! why does he want you to forget about him, and why does he think that's selfish!!!! you want to remember him and your time together because no matter what happens in the end / if you're hurt by him or your curse, these memories are precious to you - even if you lose him, at least he was yours to lose.
he wants you to forget because somehow, he thinks the memories you have of him will cause you pain. he doesn't want to see you suffer through the process of losing him as you succumb to your curse. if you just forgot him, maybe you could go a lot easier. to him, it's selfish because you clearly don't want to forget and they're your memories and it's your prerogative, but for his own sake, he wants you to forget because he wants to see you go without pain. if you forget about him, the only one who suffers will be him.
or: haku knows memories make a person. he knows this from subaru's stigma, and he knows this from how ghosts are just memories of people who live on. once the anomaly in you takes over, if you'd just forget about him, as long as it doesn't carry any memories of your life together, it means that you're well and truly gone and he can now kill the anomaly with the knowledge that there is nothing left of you, without any sort of guilt.
regarding the haku-tohma relationship: i think also in light of the theory that haku was a frostheimer who transferred out to hotarubi (and perhaps even transferred out alongside yuri) and left a big gap for tohma to fill, it makes sense that tohma doesn't see him in a good light. tohma seems like the kind who values loyalty a lot (given how he maintains his friendship with alan), and as a result might see haku as a traitor to jin/frostheim. which also explains why when they met in ep7 ch19 tohma was all like, "our wheelhouse?" when haku used 'our' to refer to himself as part of hotarubi, as if something about haku treating himself as part of hotarubi rubs tohma the wrong way. maybe he's bitter haku doesn't think of himself as frostheim anymore? which doesn't make too much sense to me since tohma transferred out of vagastrom... unless he also thinks of himself as vagastrom at heart? maybe his frostheim identity is stored in his monocle
at the same time, haku just treats tohma sort of coolly ("if you've got something to say to me, just say it.") - he doesn't want to play politics like tohma does. which i think is very much in line with what you said about him not holding any grudges towards tohma - if anything, the tension seems very one-sided and something haku wants to leave behind.
(that one theory going around also makes sense to me... that haku would transfer out of frostheim not because of anything major but because he couldn't stand the rich people politics going on in there... he's too lazy for that sort of shit... which is why he enjoys hotarubi a lot more, since subaru is a really sincere person and zenji is just... zenji...)
anyway tldr; sorry this was a massive word vomit and idk if i even answered anything but i think haku just needs someone on his side for once and mc needs to stop second-guessing him because i, for one, will follow him wherever he goes,,,

i'm really curious about what marcille's mother's deal is. seems like she's not too big on the rest of elven society. here's what we know about her so far:
mage at a human royal court (adventurer's bible)
courtship with marcille's father donato lasted 17 years (adventurer's bible)
specialty is roast pork, which was also donato's favorite (chapter 81)
had a cheerful personality up until the point donato got too sick to eat his favorite food. her extreme emotional reaction to this left a lasting impression on marcille (chapter 81)
remarried to a gnome and moved away from the city at some point after donato died (adventurer's bible)
several portraits of her appear in marcille's nightmare (chapter 42); this is the second time we see marcille dream of her (chapter 3)
preferred non-elven food and didn't introduce marcille to any traditional elven dishes (chapter 74)
from the canaries' reactions in chapter 74, it appears elven society looks down on elves who go to live among and work for short-lived races. they seemed especially put off that she would have a mixed-blood child. when they're talking about the lyrikmumare to get marcille to trip up, marcille envisions her mother saying that the food "here" (i.e., the northern continent) tastes so much better. so the picture we're getting here is of an elf who has removed herself from elven culture, but the question is, did she do it willingly or was she forced to?
keeping her other actions in mind, i'm leaning more towards the former. the most intriguing thing for me is that she eventually married a gnome, despite elves and gnomes having infamously waged war against each other over differences in the practice of magic and presently tending to discriminate against the other on sight. (one thing's for sure ā€” marcille's mother is winning the idgaf war!)
marcille never talks about her gnome stepfather though, and it's unclear what she thinks of her mother's remarriage. the timing of the remarriage is also a mystery. donato married marcille's mother when he was 32 (after having courted her for 17 years) and died at 82, meaning they were married for 50 years. marcille is also currently 50 years old, but we know she wasn't born immediately after the marriage: in chapter 81, donato's doppelganger says marcille was born when he'd started "getting on in years." based on marcille's memories of him and the established fact that the average tall-man lifespan is 60 years, i'd hazard that he was in his 50s then. this gives him 30 years or less with marcille ā€” definitely less than 35, which we know is the age at which she left for the magic academy.
we don't know if marcille's mother remarries before or after marcille leaves (if before, than that's definitely a shockingly short time), but it's interesting that she chose to marry someone from a long-lived race this time. maybe this is her way of ensuring she spares herself another heartbreak? or maybe she *is* still heartbroken and is trying to cover it up.
but. i can't help but kind of agree with chilchuck in chapter 81, that marcille's parents are not blameless for marcille becoming the dungeon lord. since it's apparently well-documented, they surely must have known ā€” as well-educated people ā€” that mixed-blood children face not just discrimination but also mental anguish that comes with their unstable aging (not to mention the sterility). so the way they raised marcille feels frankly irresponsible šŸ˜
anyway. i'd love to get spin-off content where post-adventure marcille and her mother meet again. i feel like there's a lot of unresolved issues there (that can of course be hashed out over a good meal).

hualian au role reversal?? where top paranormal investigator!hua cheng falls in love with 800-year-old ghost!xie lian
This is such a good concept?? I don't have the TGCF cred to do it justice, but let's see....
Hua Cheng's a leading expert in paranormal investigation because he's good at what he does -- thorough, efficient, and ghosts just seem to respect him? But also, he's got the cool, dark, mysterious persona. He rides around on a motorcycle. A majority of the ghost hunting community has had at least a small crush on him at some point
Lesser known fact: Hua Cheng has been a history nerd since childhood and the fall of the now-obscure Kingdom of Xianle is his Roman Empire. He comes across a haunted sword from this period... and eventually, it becomes apparent that the ghost attached to the sword is the last crown prince of Xianle. (Who was Hua Cheng's childhood crush, but the ghost doesn't need to know that in any hurry.)
Xie Lian has a lot of unresolved issues (Guiltā„¢ļø) that have him stuck in the mortal plane. Included in said guilt is the death of one of his young but very loyal followers, who died protecting the prince. (Who is similar in a lot of ways to Hua Cheng, but Hua Cheng doesn't need to know that in any hurry, either.)
He Xuan does recovery dives at shipwrecks and works with Hua Cheng frequently when he comes across cursed items. Maybe this is where the Xie Lian sword was found.
There is definitely voluntary possession/body sharing that happens at some point in this AU, in some perilous scenario that requires it. Or not so perilous. Just recreationally. Who knows. Why not both

Have you considered the shenanigans happening in between episodes 4 and 5 of season 1 of Heartstopper?
This was Nick and Charlie at the end of episode 4:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charlie had been panicking that he was behaving in ways that would reveal the secret romantic aspect of their relationship to others and that that would be upsetting to Nick. Nick was beginning to reassure Charlie, or at least to take on the blame for their predicament for himself ("I'm the one who should be saying sorry..."), when Isaac abruptly entered. Isaac then left, but it was too late: Nick beat a hasty retreat and Nick and Charlie's respective guilt was left unresolved.
Jump to where we pick up with Nick and Charlie at the beginning of episode 5:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have Charlie between-the-lines inviting Nick to his birthday party ("Me and my friends are going bowling, and I was gonna ask you if you wanted to come, but I know you don't really know them so you don't have to."), and Nick enthusiastically accepting almost before Charlie has finished speaking. There are smiles and small touches (and arms pressed together) and fond looks...All seems well in Nick-and-Charlie land.
But why? Or, maybe, how? What happened between that...I don't want to say "catastrophic" but surely unfortunate lack of discussion or closure between them in the infirmary and the cosy happy times in their form group?
This is why I call shenanigans.
Except I think there weren't shenanigans.
Potentially even worse, I think there was wilful ignoring and wishful thinking.
I think both Nick and Charlie are choosing to ignore their issues and act like things are okay, and since the other's acting like things are okay, well, everything's okay then, right?
(No.)
For Charlie's side, I expect Nick's cut-off apology in the infirmary has left him trying to keep in mind that Nick isn't blaming him but probably otherwise very unsteady and out of the loop.
From Nick's point of view, he's likely not yet ready to make any promises to change things, so what good would randomly bringing up his conflicted and difficult feelings do? Besides, maybe Charlie understood what he was trying to get at (Nick can hope).
Not only is this relationship pretty new and feeling tenuous, but relationships in general are new to Nick, and a relationship with someone who cares about him is new to Charlie. They're both insecure and uncertain about how the other feels and what they want (while feeling and wanting a lot themselves, making it extra scary). It's easier not to rock the boat, especially if the other is acting like things are okay.
So where does that leave them? Not in a bad place, but certainly in an unresolved one. Episode 5 shows us more of that and finally brings us some resolution. (Not all, mind you, but some.)
Note that the resolution that episode 5 brings is some of the resolution missing from all the way back at the beginning of episode 4 rather than just at the end of it. Although the kiss in the rain under the umbrella went towards affirming their relationship, it seems like Nick and Charlie never had a conversation about what 'they' are, just that they're keeping 'them' a secret.
(It's reasonable to point out that the infirmary (sort-of) conversation likely happened on a Saturday and the birthday (sort-of) invitation likely happened on the Monday right afterwards, plus for the latter they're in school, so having any sort of bigger discussion in between these events would be challenging.
That said, Nick and Charlie also don't seem to have a bigger conversation during the week between Nick agreeing to go to Charlie's birthday party and the party itself, and they probably could have found time at some point if they'd really wanted to.)
More on episode 5 to come. In the meantime, want a refresher on the infirmary scene?

With the next life series basically around the corner, I want to share some moments that live in my head rent-free.
Disclaimer 90% of these are Cleo and Etho. I swear I didn't do this on purpose they just have some good moments.
1. When Cleo gives Bdubs the 'Mamma's favourite boy' clock in the Limited Life finale.
This moment legit made me cry. It was such a simple and sweet moment, and I think it really showed the growth from Cleos. "Don't call me Mum" as well as the bond the Clockers had.
2. Etho talking to the Ghost of his 'family'
It's so, idk if surreal is the right word? But it's a quiet moment in the chaos of the finale. Etho talking to the ghost of his children about how if he could do it again he would be a better father he would try harder, and maybe it's my own unresolved issues but that kinda hit hard.
3. Etho calling Scott Cleos Bdubs
No notes. I feel no notes are needed. Sometimes, I'll be at work, and suddenly, that just pops into my head and it just sits there.
4. A MOLE!?
Nothing beats a classic. That is one of my favourite moments in 3rd life, the timing and reactions and arg it's great.
5. hark the herald angels what are you doing here ye blood crown King?
Perfect accidental rhyme on Bdubs part also the way he turns around really excited about how nice it sound.
6. Scars kills in Secret life
Okay, so there's this animatic that has changed my brian chemistry, and I think about it a lot, which means I think about SL!Scar and his kills a lot, but even without the animatic, Scars kill on Etho sits in my head.
youtube
Here's the animatic btw.
Anyway, those are all the prominent ones I'm sure there's more that I'll remember but I rotate those ones in my head the most.

ā€œShe is is envious of the bond Cloud has with Tifaā€
Genuine question here because I see a lot of CloTi discourse talk about how Aerith is envious of Cloud and Tifaā€™s bond, but is this ever mentioned officially or explained? I canā€™t find one single inference or implication that she is, only that one could argue via subjective interpretation that she maybe wants to try to learn Cloud for who he is and not who he reminds her of.
Arguably, one could say that this interpretation is inherently describing an envy, but Iā€™m looking at it from the perspective of Aerith wanting to learn who Cloud is in an effort to like him for him and not Zack.
(Full disclosure: Iā€™m actually a huge CloTi, but Iā€™ve been out of the fandom for a decade+, and Iā€™ve been reading a lot of discussions on the LTD, and while my personal opinion is that CloTi is more or less canonical at this point, the nuance that theyā€™ve developed with Aerith that just wasnā€™t there in OG is interesting/perplexing to me because I donā€™t have a full scope of info. And I like it when things are proven by the devs. Itā€™s possible that thereā€™s information Iā€™m missing or have missed, but otherwise what I have consumed doesnā€™t seem to indicate sheā€™s envious of Cloud/Tifaā€™s relationship specifically.)
The idea that Aerith is envious of Cloud and Tifas bond became a thing mostly after Rebirth. Before that it was also put forth at times when someone did a character study of Aerith and the evidence back then was mostly just that it fit and made sense. In essence it was an amateur diagnosis. We saw in Remake that Aerith had unresolved issues concerning her childhood during the Eligor scene, that combined with what we learned about her childhood in TotP made it so that a lot of her outgoing "life affirming" behavior made a lot of sense if she was, in essence, trying to catch up for lost time. She's enthusiastically, perhaps even desperately, trying to have the same experiences everyone else has, to have a normal life. This is also congruent with other parts of the story, like her seeing Zack in Cloud. If Cloud reminds her of Zack, and she had a bond with Zack, then watching Cloud and Tifa express that same young love that she once felt would naturally lead to her wishing she had that. After all, we've known for a long time that Aerith still isn't over Zack, so her being slightly envious of that is natural. And that doesn't have to be a bad thing. You can be happy someone has something and because of that have a positive longing to experience something similar. But where this was really made explicit is in Rebirth, where there are multiple scenes that hint or outright state that Aerith wishes she had something like what Cloud and Tifa have. The main two being the Kalm "date" and the watertower discussion. In Kalm Aerith takes Cloud on a date as a pretense to talk about the prior night, and almost the first thing she does is mention Cloud and Tifas friendship and mention that she'd have given anything to have a friend when she was growing up. As soon as she thinks of their bond her first thought is to link it to her own desires.
Tumblr media
She continues by saying to not take Tifa for granted. Since this is something Aerith lacked she thinks it's important, and the idea of it being sullied or undermined instinctively bothers her. She wants them to value it as much as she would value such a thing. This is not her living vicariously through Cloud and Tifa or anything, but just a small nuance that paints the picture of a girl who yearns for these bonds herself enough that she is hyper aware of them with other people. All this is then stated explicitly on the water tower, where Aerith states: "Must be nice..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She generally willfully daydreams about how nice Nibelheim is. It all paints the same picture, a girl without a childhood who never got to experience the things that Cloud and Tifa had and lost, but wishes that she did. This is a huge part of her character and establishes the background needed to understand stuff like "no promises to keep". Some people are upset that NPTK is not a love song from Aerith to Cloud, but a deeper look into Aerith shows why it would be weird for it to be one. Because Aeriths journey isn't about romance, it isn't even just about Cloud. It's about her experiencing and developing the bonds that she felt she was denied for so long. The song is "even about Tifa and Barret" because it's about all the precious bonds she made on her journey. It's one of the things that makes Clotis version of Aerith superior to the Clerith version, because we give her so many more layers.

I get the trope where Jim gets all flustered or defensive about admitting heā€™s attracted to Spock.
However, I think itā€™s more likely for him to be like, ā€œyeah, and?ā€
Like, Spockā€™s hotness is a fact of the universe to him. As constant as the laws of thermodynamics.
Ahh, I LOVE this discussion. And I think youā€™re spot onā€”Spockā€™s attractiveness is a fact of the universe (like gravity or how tribbles multiply), but how Kirk reacts to that really does depend on which version of him youā€™re talking about. So let me break it down, because each Kirk has layers, and I have a lot of feelings about this, okay? Buckle up:
AOS Kirk: Oh boy, heā€™s a walking textbook of self-loathing and unresolved trauma. This guy is running on pure adrenaline, ambition, and a desperate need to prove himself. He doesnā€™t care about his life (or anyoneā€™s perception of his worth) deep down, so while heā€™s quick to jump into things and act like heā€™s confident, itā€™s all a facade. That makes him really good at hiding how he truly feelsā€”about his failures, his strengths, and even his attraction to people like Spock.
When he feels that pull toward Spock, I imagine it terrifies him. Heā€™s not used to needing anyone or feeling genuinely connectedā€”his whole life has been about avoiding that vulnerability. And because he doesnā€™t see himself as valuable, itā€™s not just ā€œSpock is hotā€ for him; itā€™s more like, ā€œSpock is extraordinary, and if he saw the real me, thereā€™s no way heā€™d stick around.ā€ Hence, the defensiveness. The attraction forces him to confront feelings he doesnā€™t know how to handle because those feelings arenā€™t protected by the walls heā€™s built up. So, he gets flustered, tries to bury it, hides behind bravado, because anything else would feel like risking his already fragile sense of self.
AOS Kirk is all about distraction and control, so if he can laugh it off or act nonchalant, thatā€™s his way of protecting himself from the deeper pain of thinking he might not be good enough for someone like Spock (even though he absolutely isā€”he just canā€™t see it). Inner work and self-acceptance take time, and theyā€™re hard, messy, and nonlinear. Kirk is in the middle of that journey, which is why his reactions are so complicated.
TOS Kirk: Now, this guy is interesting because heā€™s older, wiser, and definitely more settled in his role as captain. Heā€™s had time to prove himself, and he knows heā€™s damn good at what he does. But that doesnā€™t mean heā€™s without his issuesā€”heā€™s still an overachiever, and he still struggles with the idea of being vulnerable. But, I think heā€™s more comfortable in his own skin than AOS Kirk, and heā€™s a lot more accepting of who he is as a person.
For TOS Kirk, the idea that heā€™s attracted to Spock is less of an identity crisis and more of a ā€œyeah, that tracks.ā€ Heā€™s self-aware enough to know he cares deeply for Spock, and that extends to all aspects of his being. I think he views it like, ā€œSpockā€™s an incredible beingā€”of course Iā€™m attracted to him.ā€ Itā€™s more a fact of life, like you said, than something he needs to hide or deny. Heā€™s learned how to balance duty and desire, how to be professional while also letting himself feel things, so while he might not shout it from the bridge, heā€™d definitely accept it. Maybe he even has a small, knowing smile whenever he catches himself staring.
Thereā€™s a sense of acceptance here thatā€™s born from years of partnership and trust. TOS Kirk isnā€™t necessarily more comfortable with his feelings than AOS Kirk, but heā€™s learned to compartmentalize them in a healthier way. Itā€™s not about avoiding them; itā€™s about understanding their place and accepting them as part of his experience. If he had to admit his attraction to Spock, heā€™d do it without flinching because he knows itā€™s true.
SNW Kirk: And, just for fun, if we look at SNW Kirk (since weā€™ve got some glimpses of him in the show), he feels like an interesting blend between AOS and TOS. Heā€™s younger and still finding his way, but heā€™s not quite as reckless as AOS Kirk. Thereā€™s this sense that heā€™s driven by curiosity and adventure but not necessarily the need to prove himself constantly. Heā€™s more open and direct about his feelings, and I can imagine him seeing Spockā€™s attractiveness as a given, something to be admired with a confident smirk rather than hidden behind defensiveness. Heā€™s secure enough to acknowledge it, but maybe not quite old enough yet to know what to do with those feelings beyond flirting and grinning through it.
Basically, all these versions have different shades of the same thing: an attraction thatā€™s so strong it demands to be reckoned with. And how each Kirk reacts tells us so much about where he is in his journey, what kind of baggage heā€™s carrying, and how he deals with emotions he canā€™t quite control. Theyā€™re all justā€¦ so much, and I love them for it. šŸ’›

To me, I donā€™t think Buffy or the audience can ever truly know if sheā€™s in love with angel or just in attachment with him. I believe she is just in attachment and especially before innocence and after his encounter with the first, just full on enmeshment with him. No boundaries whatsoever, his pain is her pain (which is extremely common in parentified children who feel they have to protect their parents from their pain like what buffy does with joyce), just like how she describes her feelings towards riley later which is NOT a good thing, empathy is good, taking on others pain as if itā€™s your own is extremely unhealthy. (Yes Iā€™m pulling on my psych degree for a tumblr post, human behavior and buffy are two of my special interests)
What I mean by ā€œin attachmentā€ is that she has all of the same anxieties and insecurities about angel that she does with her father. Angelā€™s erratic ļæ¼and unpredictable behavior plays on her anxious avoidant attachment style SO AGGRESSIVELY. He keeps showing up, giving her little information at all and even less about himself and then vanishing leaving her hanging, and anxiously wondering about him which can mimic thinking youā€™re romantically interested when really itā€™s just an unresolved problem you desperately want to solve. She has a lot of valid criticisms about him before theyā€™re officially together about his inconsistencies, him treating her like a child, him being too old for her and then all of a sudden sheā€™s saying she wants to die when they kiss and that she loves him (after he forces her to say she loves him before heā€™ll tell the truth about drusilla). That is exactly how falling into attachment goes. Once youā€™re hooked all your feelings that are caused by a bad relationship with a parent are projected onto the partner who you are unknowingly recreating that dynamic with which is why such intense and strong feelings can happen so quickly and suddenly youā€™re ignoring all concerns you had before forming this attachment with someone.
Heā€™s not her soulmate, heā€™s just the first guy to treat her like her father did and if you donā€™t address that cycle the relationship is recreating it can be impossible to move on because they will ALWAYS feel like something is unresolved and if you donā€™t know why you feel that way you can misinterpret it as true love or destiny because why all would you suffer so much and still love them if it wasnā€™t? Itā€™s a mistake SO MANY of us make in our romantic relationships and these portrayals of unhealthy attachments being sold to us a soul mates doesnā€™t help us at all.
She does it with Riley also but she walls herself off so she doesnā€™t get AS attached to him as she did angel but their relationship is still her trying to fix the relationship with her father by changing herself so maybe this time heā€™ll stay. Itā€™s why his opinion still matters so much to her when he comes back in season 6 despite him being a truly awful person to her who has done nothing but make mistakes and whose opinion should not matter to her at all after everything he put her through. He is another pseudo father figure she craves approval from.
Itā€™s why I love her relationship with Spike so much despite all the bad they go through before season 7. We know her feelings are real because Spike doesnā€™t play on her anxious-avoidant attachment at all because he is ALWAYS there even when sheā€™s mean and claims she doesnā€™t want him there. And to me everything they do to each other makes perfect sense, their relationship is exactly what two people with severe trauma and one with anxious-avoidant and one with just anxious-attachment going into a relationship together looks like. You hurt each other A LOT because youā€™re working out all your issues with each other and they donā€™t have ANY help from a therapist or someone who can help minimize the hurt so they both just use their worst coping mechanisms and the fact that they go through all that and still get to be together and happy and healthy on the other side is just everything to me because that so rarely happens in the real world, where you get to be with the person who was also a catalyst for healing and having to go through all that suffering together only to have to start over -hopefully from a much better place - but still with someone else BLOWS. So Spike and Buffy to me are about hope and healing (including the unpleasant and very ugly, dark parts of healing people rarely talk about) and getting to do each phase of that with someone AND enjoy being happy and whole together is just UGHHHH I love it so much.
