The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - “Fairytale of New York” (1987)
Thirty-seven years ago today, on November 23rd, 1987, “Fairytale of New York,” the lead single from If I Should Fall from Grace with God, the third studio album by the Pogues, was released. With its origins stretching back to 1985, the song had a trying gestation period to reach its final release. In its first recorded incarnation, the female role was performed by original Pogues bass player Cait O’Riordan, but eventually went to the wife of then-Pogues producer Steve Lillywhite, singer/songwriter Kirsty MacColl. Named after the 1973 novel by J.P. Donleavy, the track’s operatic (possibly internal) dialogue, a harsh reminiscence of lost hopes while in the drunk tank, struck a chord and was an immediate success. While the song has never been a UK No. 1, peaking at No. 2 in its initial run, the enduring track has been in the UK top-20 twenty times since its release, including every year at Christmas since 2005. As unlikely as it may seem that one of the Western world’s favorite modern Christmas songs is by an iconoclastic Irish punk/folk band, it is difficult to think of anyone else that could have so deftly combined such a gently lilting Broadway melody with the painful realities of the downtrodden that makes the tune so beloved, and it may very well be the song that ultimately defines the Pogues. As stated by the song’s co-author Shane MacGowan, “It’s our ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’”

DIDN'T WANNA FEEL OLD IN 2025? SUCKS TO BE YOU!
HEY THERE PEOPLE OF TODAY AND ROBOTS OF TOMORROW! IT'S ME, CLARK!
Y'know what's funny? All last year peeps kept liking my 'Didn't Wanna Feel Old' journal from 2023. One commenter said I should make a new one for 2024. Jee, ya' don't say? Guess you missed how that was already a thing. Was nobody interested in seeing what all reached a major milestone back in 2024? Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Transformers, they all celebrated their 40th Anniversary, Lion King had its 30th, a lot of cool stuff got that much older. Shame nobody seemed to notice. Ah well, maybe 2025 will be better. Especially when a certain someone is celebrating his own major milestone this year. When, exactly? Read to find out!

James Earl Jones
We lost James Earl Jones yesterday, which jogged my memory...
In the early 1980s, I was living in Brooklyn, attending art school. Every so often, a couple of us would head into "the city" to hit the TKTS booth in Times Square. This is where one could get tickets to Broadway shows at a steep discount, depending upon availability—perfect for broke college students.
It was in this way I saw Jason Robards in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh at the American National Theater in 1985. (Robards originally did the play in 1956.)
Prior to that, during the spring semester of 1982, I was able to take in a revival of Shakespeare's Othello at the Winter Garden Theatre. James Earl Jones enjoys top billing as the title character, with Dianne Wiest and Kelsey Grammer being listed prior to one of my favorite actors, Christopher Plummer, as Iago.
Even now I can still recall Jones's power and Plummer's elegance, but that's about it after more than forty years. The cast did 123 performances of Othello between February 3rd and May 23rd of 1982. If you're interested in more detail of the run, you can go here.
When I heard of James Earl Jones's death, I did not immediately recall attending this play, but first thought of him as a relatively young lad in his first film role—in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove.
The actor exuded nervousness as his character (Lt. Lothar Zogg) struggled to get the bomb doors open of the B52 being flown by Slim Pickens (as Major Kong). For a taste of that, one can go here. Truly, this is one of the most memorable film scenes of the Cold War 1960s.
Of course, everyone knows Jones lent his powerful voice to the Star Wars franchise as well as a budding cable news network based in Atlanta. In any event, I'm happy to have seen him in person, on stage, way back when. Rest in Power Mr. Jones.

Mom suggested for me to write in a journal during my stay in Colorado, just to see what I’m up to. Never been one for writing in a diary, but whatever.
Finally got off the bus a couple hours ago after an over 12 hour drive between states, and now I’m staying at pop’s place for the remainder of my stay. Not a bad house, but not great. Found a spider in my bed sheets and I still feel like something’s crawling on me.
It was surreal seeing Dad again after so long. Last time I saw him was around a decade ago, when I was still a stupid eleven year old. I can’t tell how I feel about being back in this town again. It’s nostalgic sure, but I can’t help but feel like I should’ve stayed in Wyoming. The plus side is that I can film a documentary while I’m down here for the college assignment I need to get done before the end of the year.
Still getting used to everything. Hoping this month won’t last too long. Starting to feel homesick already.

Happy Birthday one Scotlands finest musicians' fiddle player Aly Bain, born in Lerwick, Shetland May 15th, 1946.
Bain began playing the fiddle at the age of 11 and studied under influential Shetland fiddler Tom Anderson. In the late '70s, he played on two of Anderson's albums -- The Silver Bow and Shetland Folk Fiddling, Vol. 2. Honing his craft in a series of local bands, Bain attracted international attention after joining Irish/Scottish band, the Boys of the Lough, whom he met at the Falkirk Folk Festival in 1969.
Aly released his debut solo outing, First Album, in 1985. Three years later, he traveled to Louisiana to record the album, Aly Meets the Cajuns. The same year, he met Phil Cunningham at a pub near Edinburgh and they agreed to tour together. Their first duo album, The Pearl, released in 1994, was followed by The Ruby in 1997.
Bain has hosted several musical series for BBC Television. Down Home explored the spread of the Celtic fiddle tradition from Ireland and Scotland to North America. Push the Boat Out, shown in 1991, was taped during the Mayfest celebrations in Glasgow. The Shetland Set, shown the same year, was taped at the Shetland Folk Festival. Bain's autobiography, Fiddler on the Loose, co-written by Alistair Clark, was published by Mainstream Publishing in 1993.
Aly had a wee health scare in 2019 and had to undrgo a triple heart bypass, but was soon on his feet again and is keeping himself busy.
Today, Aly continues to be an ambassador for Scotland abroad and a powerful advocate for traditional music.
Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham are currently touring, you can catch them next at Backstage at The Green in Kinross, on May 23rd The two will be at Sidmouth Folk Festival in August and will return to Scotland for gigs in Forres and Lanark, two concets in Glasgow's Òran Mór in September, quite fitting as the rough translation for the Gaelic name of the venue is 'great melody of life' or 'big song',

All the Pacific Rim Character Birthdays I Could Find
...And by "all," I mean I will be writing down character birthdays from all the sources I can find, some of which contradict each other! It definitely sheds some insight into how ideas changed during development, and I think it shows some evidence that not everyone was always up to date - for example, Mako and Raleigh's Drift Space bios seem to be up to date, but Newt's is clearly an older version, as indicated by his age being given as 45 rather than 35.
Update: I found a post on Travis Beacham's blog that lists birthdays! I've added them now.
Mako Mori Bio posted by GdT on Twitter: January 9th, 2006 Drift Space Special Feature: April 23rd, 2003 Man, Machine, & Monsters: April 23rd, 2003 Pacific Rim Novelization: April 23, 2003 Travis Beacham's Blog: April 23, 2005
Raleigh Becket Bio posted by GdT on Twitter: April 11, 1991 Drift Space Special Feature: December 11, 1998 Man, Machine, & Monsters: December 11, 1998 Pacific Rim Novelization: December 11, 1998 Travis Beacham's Blog: December 11, 1998
Yancy Becket Travis Beacham's Blog: November 7th, 1995
Stacker Pentecost Bio posted by GdT on Twitter: September 9, 1983 Man, Machine, & Monsters: December 30, 1985 Pacific Rim Novelization: December 30, 1985 Travis Beacham's Blog: December 30, 1985
Hercules Hansen Man, Machine, & Monsters: November 10, 1980 Pacific Rim Novelization: November 10, 1980 Travis Beacham's Blog: November 10, 1980
Chuck Hansen Man, Machine, & Monsters: August 14, 2003 Travis Beacham's Blog: August 14, 2003
Sasha Kaidonovsky Man, Machine, & Monsters: February 9, 1991 Travis Beacham's Blog: February 9, 1991
Aleksis Kaidonovsky Man, Machine, & Monsters: January 31, 1998 Travis Beacham's Blog: January 31st, 1989
The Wei Triplets Man, Machine, & Monsters: December 24, 1998 Travis Beacham's Blog: December 24th, 1998
Tendo Choi Man, Machine, & Monsters: May 17, 1992 Travis Beacham's Blog: May 17th, 1992
Newt Geiszler Drift Space Special Feature: January 19, 1980 Man, Machine, & Monsters: January 19, 1990 Pacific Rim Novelization: January 19, 1990 Travis Beacham's Blog: January 19, 1991
Hermann Gottlieb Man, Machine, & Monsters: June 9, 1989 Pacific Rim novelization: June 9, 1989 Travis Beacham's Blog: June 9, 1989
Notes:
Beacham stated that Aleksis Kaidonovsky's 1998 birthdate was a typo.
Beacham's blog lists Mako's birth year as 2005, but given that 2003 is listed far more commonly, I'm inclined to think his date may be in error.
