Thank you for everything James Earl Jones. You were the voice that changed my entire life at 3 years old. The reason I got the tattoo for this movie to always “Remember who you are.” You will always be our Mufasa. Rest in peace.

James Earl Jones
We lost James Earl Jones yesterday, which jogged my memory...
In the early 1980s, I was living in Brooklyn, attending art school. Every so often, a couple of us would head into "the city" to hit the TKTS booth in Times Square. This is where one could get tickets to Broadway shows at a steep discount, depending upon availability—perfect for broke college students.
It was in this way I saw Jason Robards in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh at the American National Theater in 1985. (Robards originally did the play in 1956.)
Prior to that, during the spring semester of 1982, I was able to take in a revival of Shakespeare's Othello at the Winter Garden Theatre. James Earl Jones enjoys top billing as the title character, with Dianne Wiest and Kelsey Grammer being listed prior to one of my favorite actors, Christopher Plummer, as Iago.
Even now I can still recall Jones's power and Plummer's elegance, but that's about it after more than forty years. The cast did 123 performances of Othello between February 3rd and May 23rd of 1982. If you're interested in more detail of the run, you can go here.
When I heard of James Earl Jones's death, I did not immediately recall attending this play, but first thought of him as a relatively young lad in his first film role—in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove.

The actor exuded nervousness as his character (Lt. Lothar Zogg) struggled to get the bomb doors open of the B52 being flown by Slim Pickens (as Major Kong). For a taste of that, one can go here. Truly, this is one of the most memorable film scenes of the Cold War 1960s.
Of course, everyone knows Jones lent his powerful voice to the Star Wars franchise as well as a budding cable news network based in Atlanta. In any event, I'm happy to have seen him in person, on stage, way back when. Rest in Power Mr. Jones.

It's been 30 years since Disney's The Lion King 1994 animated movie came out on June-24-1994 and let me tell ya: it's totally ROARSOME! Get it, roarsome? Oh, man. Anyways, it's the story about young lion named Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), the heir of his father named Mufasa (James Earl Jones). Simba's wicked uncle and also the main antagonist named Scar (Jeremy Irons), plots to usurp Mufasa's throne by luring father and son into a massive stampede of wildebeests in the gorge, but Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed because Scar killed his own brother during the stampede which is really TERRIBLE. Simba returns as an adult (Matthew Broderick) to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends were Timon the meerkat (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa the warthog (Ernie Sabella). The reason why am I celebrating the 1st Lion King movie is because the lion is my number one favorite animal of all time since I've seen them in zoos and other places and that's why The Lion King movie series is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time and the songs from this movie and Rhythm of the Pridelands by Lebo M is totally ROARSOME, I'm not gonna lie to you guys.

Two weeks after the passing of James Earl Jones at the age of 93, Broadway have announced that the theater lights will be dimmed in his honour on Thursday 26th at 6.45pm Eastern, an act that has become a tradition to mark the passing of notable members of the acting community who have left behind important work. Though he may have been best known as the voice of “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” Jones had a prolific career on Broadway that spanned almost seven decades. He’s been recognized by the theater community in the form of a 2017 special Tony Award for lifetime achievement. And the Cort Theatre, where he made his debut in 1958, was renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in 2022. Jones began his Broadway career in 1957 as an understudy in “The Egghead.” A decade later, he won a Tony for “The Great White Hope.” Jones went on to star in classics like August Wilson’s “Fences,” “The Iceman Cometh,” “Of Mice and Men,” “Othello,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “Driving Miss Daisy.” He performed on Broadway most recently in 2016’s “The Gin Game” with Cicely Tyson, who died in 2021 at age 96. Jones was only one a handful of actors to receive an EGOT, winning an Oscar for “The Great White Hope,” Emmys for “Heat Wave” and “Gabriel’s Fire” and a spoken word Grammy for “Great American Documents.” He'll always be a legend to us here in the Star Wars galaxy.
