“Here I am, at school, with some friends. One of them suggests the idea to go to the casino of the high school, but we can go there only if one person in the group is of age. The taller one of the group try (with difficulty) to lie to the security guy, but in the end, he lets us pass. We go and my best friend suggests sitting to a table where Louis, a guy I had a crush on is already, and another guy from the school I find really cute. After sharing few words, comes  Christian Navarro, the actor interpreting Tony in 13 Reasons Why. We chat in French like it was his mother tongue. And suddenly, the fire alarm starts to ring and we all leave the casino...”

“I end up in a kind of music festival, and with a French ecologist youtuber and another person, we go on a trek, in sort of mountains. I watch the beautiful landscape, and at some point, we need to crawl through a rock heap. I decide to go first, but I find myself stuck, if I keep going through the heap, it may fall apart on me, so I decide to, slowly, make a U-turn and come back in a safer place. So then, we search another way to continue our trek. At the end of the trek, we end up on a plateau, where there’s another group and... *alarm clock ringing*”

pour ceux qui ne seraient pas au courant, le projet d’exploitation de mines d’or profondes en Guyane censé être “arrêté” est de nouveau sur pied ! les gars, ce n’est pas parce que vous renommez “montagne d’or” en “espérance” (surnommé avec justesse “montagne d’or bis” par les médias) qu’on ne va pas voir que vous essayez de nous la mettre. le programme reste le même : déforestation, rejets de CO2 et utilisation de produits chimiques hautement toxiques en plein milieu d’une partie préservée de la forêt amazonienne

a few years back there was a huge gold mining project in french guiana called “montagne d’or” which would have led to deforestation, chemical pollution with highly toxic products and CO2 emissions in a well-preserved part of the amazonian forest. obviously people weren’t very happy about it and the project was “stopped”.

this year (because 2020 sucks and keeps on sucking) a “new” project was approved: it’s called “espérance” (because “gold mountain” was a bit too in-your-face. “hopefulness” is better at not making them look like “greedy and unscrupulous bastards” as Maxbird says so well in this video) but apart from the name it’s pretty much the same project.

they’ve been very discreet, i hadn’t even heard about it before seeing the vid. it looks like they’ve been trying to get it started sneakily while we were all distracted with other stuff, so i’d really appreciate it if you could share this video around so that as many french people as possible can see it and react

Yes, there's an e-sport called "Fantasy Birding"

I love it when I find out about something that I literally had no idea even existed, and “fantasy birding” definitely falls into that category. What is it? Well, it’s basically competitive bird-watching, but instead of having to go out and actually find the exotic birds yourself, you bet on whether someone is going to do that for a specific bird in a specific region. Finds are tracked using a public-domain database called eBird, which is run by Cornell University and allows anyone to track their bird sightings. The fantasy part was the creation of Matt Smith, who tells Deadspin:

“Fantasy birding is basically the offspring of three unrelated obsessions of mine. One is obviously birding, which I fell into pretty hard as a kid in Mississippi. The second is sports, baseball in particular, which always turned me on because of all the numbers. And the third is making things for the web.”

Players select single locations on a map each day, and they get credit for a bird if a real-life birder spots that species within a 10-kilometer radius on that day. The fantasy birding league has already drawn 358 players, according to the Deadspin piece, and the user with the handle MaxBirding was in first place as of March, having spotted 549 species, including 50 rarities, since the competition began in January. My favorite comment from Matt Smith comes at the end, where he says:

“It doesn’t matter how ridiculous the thing you’re doing is. If enough people do it together, it’ll be a good time.”
