Nonstandard
4/5
The line between video essay and Youtube documentary is pretty thin and idk if this one entirely crossed over but it’s good nonetheless. Really examines the role of a capitalist monolith in the lives of kids and the nostalgia that creates. Also we backed it :)

why is mi1 about dead people. ethan's team is dead from the moment jim begins plotting - they cannot live if ethan has to take the blame. claire is dead from the moment she begins to get attached to ethan. max makes ethan her boytoy then she gets trapped by the cia and never sees her again until her daughter takes possession of him. krieger is dead the moment ethan sees the knife. ethan himself dies with his team and with jim. luther resurrects the new ethan.
tfr is about dead people too. it doesn't matter how tight grace holds him and how much life she breathes into him. the last part of him died with his brother. only there's no one to resurrect him this him.

Jägermeister
Chapter Eighteen: Max
When Hermann heard the words, “We aren’t unrealistic about his chances for long-term survival,” over his earpiece, slightly muffled by the Striker Eureka bomber jacket that Chuck had custom made for Max, he experienced the desire to take a human life for the first time in his own.
He had to lean his cane against the wall just to ensure he did not do anything rash.
Hermann refused to do something that could keep him away from Newton for a second longer than necessary. It had already been far too long.
They received the draft email with a location at 1100 but had to wait an agonizing three more hours until ‘go time.’ They couldn’t move until Newton was actually secured. Ideally, they would not commence the meeting until Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber had returned to the Shatterdome, or at least proceeded far enough in its direction that they could not be ordered back. Tendo had started a trashcan fire just to buy them a little more time.
The plan had gone off perfectly, except for Tendo's eyebrows, which were collateral damage.
According to Marshal Hansen, Chuck had trained Max to howl on command as part of a ploy he’d developed in his Academy days to make his father look bad. Chuck would tell anyone who complained that, “Max just misses his master.” It had allowed him to get away with anything he wanted at the Academy, and it allowed his father to get away with ‘bugging the damn dog.'
Apparently, Secretary Krieger had not explicitly patted Marshal Hansen down prior to their meeting, but his welcoming hug had gotten a little explicit in its own right, so it was perhaps for the best that Max had been the one wearing a wire.
Tendo had been able to pull some strings and fast-track them a PPDC-issued signal jammer, which Hermann was certain the Secretary General would use, seeing as the nonlinear junction detector on his desk bore the same logo.
The PPDC logo had always struck Hermann as entirely too Americanized. Some of the public affairs people involved in the organization’s creation merited a stern talking to. Engine or not, ‘Gypsy’ was a racial slur. It was 2025, for heaven’s sake. He hadn't even gotten started on ‘Slattern.’
Anyway, the signal jammers had probably been considered wide-range at one point, but like most PPDC equipment, they were several years out of date. Hermann had simply adjusted their audio recording device to transmit on a frequency not covered by the signal jammers.
Technically, the audio recording device was a bodyworn camera they had borrowed from the Security Office, but the only video recorded was one of Max’s nipples. They had edited it out before sending it to the UN.
There was another draft waiting for them in the BlackMail inbox after the meeting.
The docs say Newt can't be moved right now.
Room 402.
They know you're coming.
Love,
Lou and Dierdre <3
They took a helicopter. Not one of the clunky V-50 Jumphawks used in Jaeger deployment. A Sikorsky X3. Like the V-50, it had two rotors, but they were coaxial rotors, mounted on a single concentric shaft and contra-rotating. It could reach speeds of nearly 300 mph, twice the rate of an average helicopter.
There was originally only one Sikorsky X3 per Shatterdome, but Hong Kong had inherited one from Anchorage when it shut down. It was an elite aircraft, reserved for medical transport or emergencies only. One had flown Hermann out to the bone slums and back to the Shatterdome with Newton on V-Day. Another had carried Newton out of the bone slums again only that morning.
That one was waiting for them in the hanger bay, freshly refueled. When they boarded, the first thing Hermann saw was his parka, crumpled on the cockpit floor.
He held it on his lap for the duration of their three-hour flight.
The flight would have been just over two hours by plane, not factoring in airport security, airline delays, and the one-hour drive from the Hangzhou International Airport to the Four Seasons Hangzhou at West Lake.
The Hong Kong Four Seasons, where the Secretary General had been staying, was a normal, if overpriced, hotel. The Four Seasons Hangzhou at West Lake, however, was based on the Four Seasons Westlake Village in California (different lake, further west) and likewise billed as a ‘Center for Health and Wellbeing.’ It was ostensibly a hybrid hospital-hotel, but it was really just a hospital for the disgustingly privileged. Their tagline was, ‘We can arrange virtually anything.’
Apparently that included private suites for illegal medical experiments.
The flight was largely silent, although Raleigh and Mako kept shooting each other significant glances.
They had volunteered to accompany Hermann to Hangzhou. Marshal Hansen and Tendo stayed at the Shatterdome to ensure that Secretary Krieger did not attempt to stage some sort of coup d’état while they contacted the UN and arranged for him to be remanded into federal custody.
The Marshal had been lying, through what sounded like gritted teeth, about blackmail being part of their plan, which had always been to submit the recording as evidence. They were secure in the knowledge that its contents would ensure they were not the ones charged with seditious conspiracy.
Marshal Hansen called an hour into the flight to confirm that the Secretary General had been arrested and Max had bit him on the ass. There were apparently no witnesses to the latter incident, despite the Secretary General having attracted quite a crowd while attempting to resist arrest.
Hermann took serious issue with the current and historical climate of carceral justice in the United States. This political stance certainly stemmed directly from Newton, but it did seem to have some solid reasoning behind it. Whatever its origin, it did not seem to apply in this instance.
Dustin Krieger was a bully, angry that his gang was no longer the biggest colonizer on the playground. He was an apocalypse profiteer. Worst of all, he was someone who had harmed Newton.
He did not deserve to breathe free air.
They had been reasonably certain that Secretary Krieger was lying about having the full support of the United Nations for his plans, or he would have been meeting with the General Assembly, not just Representatives Taylor and Cole, or the ‘Colonizer’s Club,’ as Tendo called them.
They were still two very powerful people, so it had to be ensured they would want nothing to do with Operation Keepsake.
Marshal Hansen had not sent a copy of the recording to TMZ, though that certainly would have done the trick.
Hermann had been insistent. Newton was already the subject of enough public scrutiny. He had become something of an internet sensation in the wake of the initial leak. People had dug into his past and uncovered old MySpace videos of him playing keyboard for Black Velvet Rabbit. Some people had even begun to copy his tattoos. Apparently, he was very big in Japan.
Basically, Newton was a rockstar.
It was his saving grace. The Marshal's threat to furnish TMZ with a copy of the recording had been extended, by implication, to the United Nations. If the Secretary General had alliances there once, they were no more.
Hermann started slightly when Raleigh asked, “You hanging in there, Dr. Gottleib?”
Raleigh didn't even know Newton. Not really. One meeting, which had gone, if possible, worse than Hermann's own initial encounter with Newton. He was really quite poor at first impressions.
Yet, Raleigh had stayed up all night to help Hermann sort through threats from the kaiju cults, and it was nearly nightfall again.
“Please call me Hermann.”
“Raleigh,” he replied, before turning to return Mako’s smile.
The sky was kaiju blue when they left Hong Kong, but dusk had fallen by the time they made landing on the Hangzhou Four Seasons’ helicopter pad. The hotel was bathed in orange light. It would have been an ideal picture for their brochure, but Hermann hardly saw it at all.
They were met by an apologetic hospital director, an unapologetic lawyer, and a doctor. Hermann ignored the former two and focused his attention on the doctor.
Newton had been showing signs of an absence seizure. It was not the tonic-clonic-like seizure with violent muscular contractions that had followed his drift in the bunker, but a much more subtle type, commonly characterized by an apparent loss of attention. It usually lasted fewer than twenty seconds.
Newton had been in a state of apparent seizure for over three hours, ever since Dierdre and Lou had removed the squid cap from his head.
When Hermann entered Room 402, Lou and Dierdre were standing silent sentinel off to the side, while doctors hovered over Newton, muttering to each other and clicking their tongues. He approached the bed despite much louder sounds from several of them, which were most likely rebukes.
Hermann reached out and took Newton’s hand in his own, the one without the broken finger. Newton was sitting up in bed. His eyes were open, but their lids fluttered every few seconds. Behind them, the whites of both eyes were almost entirely flooded with blood.
Suddenly, those eyes turned towards Hermann.
Hermann choked out a laugh that was only slightly hysterical. He dropped his cane and put his other hand behind Newton’s neck, pressing their foreheads together once again.
Newton reached for him as well. His hands were shaking but sure in their movement, right up until they wrapped around Hermann’s neck and started to squeeze.

OC LOREDROP PRETTY PLEASE??
okayyy!!! i haveeeee soooooo many OCs, i'm going to talk about the ones from the fairy realm part in my story!!
right, so one of my deuteragonists from the previous part of the story, Hana Kaetsu, in the fantasy arc, accidentally gets sent to the fairy realm by reading a letter from a mysterious group mistakenly delivered to her, that was actually meant for her classmate Sybil Villin who's secretly a witch (she's pretty open about her interest in making potions and researching the supernatural and all that but ofc everyone just thinks she's interested in it cause. people don't generally believe in that anymore). anywayyyyy cause of Hana's little misadventure there, she because one of four people in her class who are now able to see ghosts and other supernatural creatures due to now having a connection with the supernatural. the other three are Sybil, ofc, cause she's a witch, her friend Naoki Himura because he managed to free and summon the ghost of their murdered classmate Ashley Atwell, and Ash herself cause. ghost
butttt before being able to return to the human world after Sybil, Naoki and Ash figured out what was going on when she suddenly disappeared (only they noticed that Hana had gone missing due to her disappearance being of supernatural causes, and them being the only ones around who have that experience- for everyone else, it's as if Hana never existed but they remember her again as if nothing happened after she returns), Hana met Sybil's "coven" (which is a gathering of witches, but they're not all witches, half of them are fae), the coven being the one who tried to address that letter to Sybil, wanting her back as she'd suddenly lost contact with them for a few years. where Hana ends up after being transported there is a village in the fairy realm called "Glacialisville" and the forests surrounding it, a slightly cold area that gets very snowy winters and not very warm summers, only about 25 degrees Celsius max. also quite windy and prone to storms
the coven consists of:
Lady Esmerelda- a forty-six year old witch who is basically the leader, currently the lady of the mansion they are based in, "Glacies Manor" though she doesn't own it, just looking after it until Rowan feels prepared enough to take on the responsibility. adoptive mother of Rowan and Dahlia
Rowan Leblanc- a nineteen year old witch. his bio mother was executed for being caught practicing witchcraft- her and her ancestors were the true owners of Glacies Manor and are a long line of very powerful witches (though are known for having slightly unstable magic compared to others), including a particularly infamous one...
Dahlia Leblanc- a seventeen year old vampire who was banished from the vampire realm, in which she was princess of one of the royal families. disowned due to not being considered a "real" vampire as she was born with an incredibly rare and tricky condition that made her highly allergic to blood
Marceline- a seventeen year old witch, old friends with Sybil and the one who set out to find her again. Marcy is incredibly skilled with a sword and plans to enrol into the uni below
Belle, Olivier and Ciel Krieger- twenty year old fairy triplets who attend an university that specifies in training future members of the fairy army with sword fighting, archery etc
Nixie- a seventeen year old unique type of fairy that can shape shift- however he can only turn into creatures that humans consider fictional, such as a unicorn, pegasus, phoenix, dragon, mermaid
Ghost- twelve years old, a type of fairy known as changeling who was switched into an awful family in the human world. Lady Esme found her and immediately saved and took her in after seeing how she was treated due to being fae. cannot speak due to having a damaged throat from that "family" trying to kill her by stabbing, prefers to mainly communicate through drawings and miming. is able to communicate with these jelly-like floating creatures around the forest who she often holds tea parties with
Lillie- a twelve year old witch who looks up to the older witches in the coven (Lady Esme, Marcy and especially Rowan due to him being very older brotherly) who is incredibly excited about becoming able to use controlled magic at thirteen (spoiler- doesn't happen, she's murdered four days before her thirteenth birthday)
need two more characters to make a whole "thirteen" for the coven feel, haven't thought of them yet
other major characters!! Dahlia and Marcy's college classmates, all also seventeen (well. probably not cause birthdays and all that but i haven't figured it out yet. they attend Glacialisville College of Arts, where they have compulsory English (mixed Lang and Lit), Maths and History + three or occassionally four creative subjects:
Vie von Vogelblut- a vampire who suffered similar trauma to Dahlia, being thrown out of the vampire realm due to disownment. he lives with his equally disowned aunt and her daughter, Rouge, who while technically his cousin, is more like his older sister. Rouge is four years older than him, twenty-one, and also goes to that army uni thing that the Krieger triplets go to. Vie is somewhat childhood friends with Dahlia, he's basically her second brother, she's his second sister. he takes Hair and Makeup, German, Creative Writing and Theatre
Raphael- a fairy who was immediately adopted into the group by the extroverted Dahlia and ends up being very good friends with Vie. Raffi takes Drawing and Painting, Photography and Arabic
Clarissa- a fiery fairy who's besties with Dahlia, frenemies with Vie. idk what she takes yet
Alexandrite- a witch who's particularly gifted with elemental magic. takes Drawing and Painting, Sculpture and Photography
Nora- a fairy who's rather wary of flying due to being visually impaired and there being less to feel in the air. she has a Golden Retriever called Leo as a service animal and she takes Violin, Creative Writing and Song Writing
Natalie and Amaryllis- a pair of fairy sisters who've been through some crap (father lured to death by a demon). they both get along well with Vie. apart from her sister and Vie, Amy's only friends with Dahlia and Alexandrite due to severe social anxiety and Nat's much more outgoing and on very good terms with most in college. Amy and Nora also wanted to be friends due to having similar fashion sense, however, there was a communication barrier due to Nora's visual impairment and Amy being selectively mute (so Nora wouldn't be able to read what Amy writes but at the same time, Amy's unable to speak to her) but!! they both decide to learn Morse code (Amy taps her messages onto Nora's hand) so they eventually get to get along. idk all the subjects the sisters take yet, but Nat does Photography as one of them and Amy takes Hair and Beauty (same class as Vie)
oh yeah i forgot about Dion- Clarissa's cousin, just kind of a bitch really
there's more but aaaaaaa i think. i've gone insane enough

I feel like you’re the only other person in the world who is as intrigued by the ethan/claire/jim dynamic as I am. It drives me crazy! I love that ethan, who is portrayed as a pretty flawless guy (he just cares TOO much) in the later movies gets this like crazy quirk of being in love with his father figure/boss’s wife and I love that you’re not always sure how much is manipulation and how much is genuine every time they interact. Severely underrated. Anyway loved the fic!
anon i am so so glad that you loved the fic and i am so glad to hear from another person fascinated by the ethan/claire/jim fuckery. (incidentally being a fellow ethan/claire/jim interested individual entitles you automatically to friend status should you so desire)
your ask touches on some things and it's giving me the urge to rant so please forgive me cause im probably about to get very off topic. I just love your point about the way that ethan (who is so steadfastly heroic in later movies!) starts out with this massive, like, to lean into the MI1 religious imagery, sin. And that sin isn't resolved in any satisfactory way--both of the people involved die, and no one is left alive who even knows what really happened, and this makes me feel rabid to think about. (Luther saw the cheek kiss, but has no context for it, and I feel strongly that Ethan has never told him anything else about that. I really think Ethan never breathes a word to anyone about Jim, Claire or Max. Kittridge is probably the closest to being able to infer some of the details, he knows Ethan loved Jim, he knows about Max's "entrapment," but he's too much of a self-absorbed bureaucrat to give a shit.)
But back to the point about the sin. For my money, Ethan's sin is the heart of MI1. The movie tells us that Ethan's sin is being in love with Claire--but in a queer reading of the movie, it's easy to read into Ethan's interactions with Claire and Jim and infer that his real sin is being in love with both of them, a sin that Jim will never openly acknowledge, but that all three of them are aware of to some degree. Ethan's sin is also portrayed as being...not actually his fault. He doesn't participate in any of Claire's "seduction moments," although from his expression after the cheek kiss IMO you can see that he has strong feelings about them. Ethan's sin is something that is done to him, and regardless of whether or not he wants it, regardless of whether initiates or even participates, he is corrupted by the experience. He's only (to some degree) cleansed by the death of claire, jim and krieger, the only people who knew about what happened.
(one of the reasons I drew from gawain and the green knight in the end of the fic is because--beyond the parallels of jim as the lord going hunting in the woods, claire as the lady going hunting for gawain, ethan as the knight just trying to make it out alive--that's a story that deals heavily in impossible moral tests and loss of agency. And Gawain emerges from it 'fey-touched', fundamentally changed despite the fact that most of what happened to him was unwanted and unavoidable. That's how i feel about ethan at the end of MI1)
It's important to note briefly that I actually don't think of the Claire/Jim/Ethan thing as his only sin in the movie. It's the only one that's remarked on directly, but the whole thing with Max feels like it's presented too similarly to ignore. It's another situation of power differences and emotional and sexual manipulation where Ethan is put in an impossible position and emerges morally corrupted (by the rules of the movie), but victorious.
In a lot of ways, I feel like the sin itself almost serves less as an indictment of Ethan and more as a worldbuilding device. MI1 establishes the world of the IMF really vividly without showing us hardly anything about it! we don't even know what the IMF is really, it doesn't have a headquarters, we don't get to know any other teams outside of the one that dies in the beginning, but the movie renders the world of the IMF through Ethan's relationship with Claire and Jim. I've talked before about the "sea of lies." The thing that made me love MI1 so much in the first place was the specific feeling that is so beautifully evoked, of gradually realizing that everyone you have ever loved wants to use you. That's the IMF! That's spywork, baby! Ethan doesn't realize it in the beginning, but he sure figures it out by the end. it's impossible for ethan to make it out of MI1 without becoming part of the corrupt world of the IMF, the real IMF that Claire and Jim and Kittridge are in, not the fantasy of the team in the opening. (to go back to the green knight metaphor--he has to take the sash in order to live--and even though that means compromising his morals, he's blameless. Corrupt, forever, but blameless.)
despite that--ethan is not the IMF. He believes in Claire. He believes in Luther. He avoids killing. he has an honor code that he sticks to even as he gets deeper and deeper into the sea of lies. that's what makes him the guy we see in the rest of the franchise, that at arguably his most vulnerable point, his most corrupt point, he believed in the people he loved and tried not to hurt anyone. The point of the sin, to me, is that Ethan is forced into the deep end of the murkiest grey moral waters and held underneath, and in the process he sacrifices moral purity for moral integrity and makes it out alive. and the movie doesn't hate him for it. He's a hero.
lots of thoughts for this ask lmfao thank you very much anon for indulging me. and thank you for reading the fic. i am so glad you liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your mission—should you choose to accept it—is to return to the heart-pounding world of Mission: Impossible one last time. With the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, released on May 23, set to dominate theaters this summer, fans are bracing for what promises to be the most explosive and possibly the most emotional entry in the franchise yet.But let’s face it: after nearly three decades of espionage, betrayal, gravity-defying stunts, and plot twists that rival the best spy thrillers, keeping track of everything that’s happened across the previous seven films can feel like… well, an impossible mission. Fortunately, we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Before you witness Ethan Hunt take on his most dangerous adversary yet, here’s everything you need to remember to be fully prepped for the final reckoning. Here’s a delightful refresher of the Mission: Impossible universe so far…#1. Mission: Impossible (1996)The franchise launched with a literal bang when a top-secret IMF mission went catastrophically wrong. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) finds himself framed for the deaths of his entire team and is forced to go on the run. Determined to clear his name, he recruits tech specialist Luther Stickell and pilot Franz Krieger to pull off a daring infiltration of the CIA. The real shock comes when Ethan uncovers the true traitor: his trusted mentor, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). This first film laid the groundwork for much of the Mission: Impossible universe, introducing key players like arms dealer Max—whose daughter reemerges in later installments—and IMF Director Eugene Kittridge, both of whom make long-awaited returns in Final Reckoning.#2. Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)Ethan’s next mission takes a biological turn: prevent a deadly virus from being unleashed on the world. Teaming up once again with Luther Stickell and new ally Billy Baird, a fearless helicopter pilot, Ethan goes head-to-head with Sean Ambrose—a former IMF agent gone rogue. While Mission: Impossible II leans heavily into action-romance, it subtly introduces a recurring theme in the franchise: the danger of rogue operatives. That thread comes full circle in Final Reckoning, as Ethan is once again forced to confront a former IMF insider who’s turned into his deadliest adversary yet.#3. Mission: Impossible III (2006)The third installment raised the emotional stakes like never before. Ethan Hunt is semi-retired, engaged to Julia (Michelle Monaghan), and training new IMF recruits. But his quiet life unravels when he’s called back into action to track down arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Davian’s relentless pursuit of a mysterious object known as the Rabbit’s Foot leads to devastating personal consequences. This film also marked the debut of Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), the quick-witted tech expert who would go on to become a franchise staple. Final Reckoning draws heavily from the emotional tension introduced here, especially Ethan’s ongoing battle to balance love, identity, and duty.#4. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)After a devastating bombing at the Kremlin, the IMF is disavowed, forcing Ethan and his team to operate off the grid to clear their names. Julia, now believed to be dead, quietly slips out of focus. Meanwhile, new team members Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) step into the spotlight. This installment is best remembered for Ethan’s nerve-shredding climb up Dubai’s Burj Khalifa—one of the franchise’s most iconic stunts. It also marked a tonal shift, embracing a leaner, more agile team dynamic that continues to shape the mission in Final Reckoning.#5. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)With the IMF officially shut down, Ethan is forced to confront a new threat: the Syndicate—a covert network of rogue agents from international intelligence agencies. Along the way, he crosses paths with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a former MI6 operative embedded deep within the organization. Their uneasy alliance—and undeniable chemistry—quickly becomes a cornerstone of the franchise’s emotional arc. Moreover, the film’s focus on rogue systems and hidden allegiances lays the groundwork for the emerging AI-driven threat in Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning.#6. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)The stakes grow nuclear in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as Ethan races against time to recover stolen plutonium before it triggers a global catastrophe. However, his mission becomes even more complex with the arrival of August Walker (Henry Cavill), a CIA operative whose true identity as a terrorist disrupts the entire operation.Meanwhile, the emotional undercurrent deepens. Julia—Ethan’s former love—returns, now remarried and living a quiet life, underscoring the weight of the sacrifices Ethan continues to make for the greater good. The film also introduces Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett), whose promotion to U.S. President in Final Reckoning adds continuity and gravity to the political stakes. And notably, the enigmatic White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) makes her debut—an arms dealer with murky loyalties, perfectly poised to be a wildcard in the franchise’s final chapter.#7. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning (2023)In the lead-up to Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, the enemy isn’t human—it’s digital. Ethan Hunt faces off against a rogue AI known as “the Entity,” a powerful force capable of hijacking global systems. Along the way, he teams up with Grace (Hayley Atwell), a skilled thief-turned-reluctant ally.Meanwhile, a familiar threat returns. Gabriel (Esai Morales), a ghost from Ethan’s past, emerges as a key figure tied to the Entity’s rise. Then comes a devastating blow: the death of Ilsa Faust in Venice. Her loss adds a personal edge, fueling Ethan’s resolve. By the end, he recovers both halves of a key said to unlock the Entity’s destruction. With that, the final chapter is set. And this time, the mission is more than impossible—it’s existential. What to Expect in Mission: Impossible – Final ReckoningSet just two months after Dead Reckoning, the last installment brings Ethan Hunt’s decades-long saga to a thrilling close. Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning weaves together storylines from across the franchise, reviving key characters like William Donloe, reuniting us with original IMF director Eugene Kittridge, and confronting the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence. This final mission goes beyond saving the world. It’s about legacy, loyalty, and bringing long-buried truths to light. With trusted allies like Luther, Benji, Grace, and Kittridge by his side, Ethan must face his past, outmaneuver the Entity, and finish what he started—all while carrying the emotional weight of his journey.Whether you’ve been following Ethan Hunt since day one or are just catching up, brushing up on these key story threads will elevate your experience. Expect full-circle revelations, devastating betrayals, and, of course, jaw-dropping stunts that only Tom Cruise could deliver. The mission is set. Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning will dominate theaters this summer—don’t miss the epic conclusion.Shop some Mission Impossible merch and CDs Featured image: Christian Black/Paramount PicturesFor the latest in fashion, lifestyle, and culture, follow us on Instagram @StyleRave_—Read Also!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s) if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments); if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0'; n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window, document,'script', ' fbq('init', '496558104568102'); fbq('track', 'PageView');!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments);if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n; n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window, document,'script',' fbq('init', '1453079628754066'); fbq('track', "PageView"); Source link

R. MORI: Excuse me!
DOG HOWLING
R. MORI: I need to see the Marshal immediately!
DOG HOWLING
S.O. TEBUTT: He’s in a meeting with the Secretary General!
DOG HOWLING
R. MORI: It will only take [unintelligible]!
DOG HOWLING
S.O. LINDUM: You can’t just [unintelligible]!
DOOR OPENING
DOG HOWLING
S.G. KRIEGER: What the [unintelligible] is going on?
DOG HOWLING
S.O.: TEBUTT: Ranger Mori is here to see you, sir!
DOG HOWLING
S.G. KRIEGER: I’m in a meeting!
DOG HOWLING
R. MORI: I’m so sorry to interrupt, Secretary General! It’s Max- He won’t stop crying!
DOG HOWLING
M. HANSEN: Come here, you ugly old mutt.
R. MORI: I think he’s missing his master.
M. HANSEN: Yeah, I know you miss him, Max. I do too. Thank you, Ranger Mori, I’ll take him from here. Dismissed.
R. MORI: Yes, sir.
DOOR CLOSING
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: Oh, that’s right. I don’t believe I’ve expressed my condolences yet.
HANSEN: Thank you, Secretary Krieger.
S.G. KRIEGER: Please, call me Dustin! There’s no need to be so formal when it’s just the two of us!
M. HANSEN: Oh, well, thank you, uh, Dustin. You can call me Herc.
S.G. KRIEGER: Of course, Herc!
M. HANSEN: I’m sorry about Max, and once more, I’m really sorry for being so late. There was a fire in the men’s loo off the Jaeger Bay. I don’t know why they called me. I’m not that kind of bloody Marshal.
S.G. KRIEGER: Don’t worry about it! I know what it’s like to get bothered with a problem well below your paygrade!
PAUSE
M. HANSEN: Right. Well, enough small talk. Why don’t we get down to brass tacks?
S.G. KRIEGER: You're a straightforward guy. I like that. I’m the same way.
M. HANSEN: Glad to hear it, Dustin.
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: Since the end of the war, there have been talks to dissolve the PPDC. I know, that’s gratitude for you, but people want to put the war behind them. If we want to save the PPDC, we need to restructure it as a fully civilian organization, bringing everything under my umbrella: Security, Medical, transport- even the eggheads in the science division.
M. HANSEN: To do what exactly?
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: Robots for Humanity.
M. HANSEN: I beg your pardon?
S.G. KRIEGER: Just picture it. Jaegers rebuilding the regions around the Pacific Rim that were most damaged by the kaiju. We would rebrand as the Pan Pacific Development Corp. Wouldn’t even need to print new mugs.
M. HANSEN: You want to use Jaegers to.. build houses? I think they’re a bit better at knocking ‘em down, mate.
S.G. KRIEGER: Oh, it would mostly be for publicity, of course. We don’t want robots taking away people’s jobs! Just kidding, but we can get labor for cheap with the Wall of Life project now defunct. The Jaegers would ostensibly be to bring in donors, but we would keep development going, just in case the kaiju came back.
M. HANSEN: The Breach is closed.
S.G. KRIEGER: For now. Even if it’s closed for good, well, there have always been wars of one kind or another. How long do you really think we can all hold hands and sing Kumbaya, Herc? Soon enough, peacetime will come to an end. There will be war. Jaegers will be used to fight it. By the time that happens, the UN will have ceded control of the PPDC to the United States of America.
M. HANSEN: Wh- What? Why would they do that?
S.G. KRIEGER: We have a plan in place, but I’ll be honest: If we could bring the Jaegers directly into the U.S. Armed Forces, it would turn our ten-year plan into a five-year one. The only reason we were going to jettison the military division was because we knew Pentecost would never go for it, but I think you might be different, Herc. You know how the world works. You could still have a place at the new PPDC. Now, I know you’re technically Australian, but you don’t have to be.
PAUSE
M. HANSEN: That’s very generous of you. I feel obliged to accept.
S.G. KRIEGER: I knew it. I’ve never gone wrong trusting my gut.
M. HANSEN: Do you really think people will let the U.S. take control of the PPDC like that?
S.G. KRIEGER: Of course they will! We stopped the war. Everybody knows Mori ejected before the payload was delivered. That was our guy! An American! Not to mention your Dr. Geizer. I will admit, I didn’t anticipate his level of celebrity, but well, if anything… people love a martyr even more.
M. HANSEN: What are you saying?
S.G. KRIEGER: Don't act naive, Herc. I thought you were supposed to be the war-hardened vet. The doctor is an important asset, but we aren’t unrealistic about his chances for long-term survival. We’ll tell everyone it was a tragic consequence of his drift with the kaiju. It'll barely be lying.
PAUSE
M. HANSEN: Let me make sure I understand. Dr. Geiszler is part of this- our plan?
S.G. KRIEGER: It’s called Operation Keepsake. Well, his involvement was also unanticipated, but now we’re hoping to use him to understand the hive mind. That was how he put it in his official report, right? A hive mind. Fascinating stuff, I’m sure. Of course, I didn’t understand most of it myself, but I got the gist. If two humans can pilot a 250-foot Jaeger, just think about what we could accomplish by applying hive mind technology.
PAUSE
M. HANSEN: So that’s why you asked Dr. Geiszler to meet you off-site.
S.G. KRIEGER: Well, he could hardly disappear from the hotel either! We needed to take custody of him, officially, but we needed an excuse to do it, since he was about to be cleared by medical. Fortunately, the Buenakai were already providing us with a Kaiju brain. All we had to do was pay them a little extra.
M. HANSEN: Then why did you raid the bunker?
S.G. KRIEGER: Oh, well, that’s not important. The import-
M. HANSEN: Oh. I get it. They cut you out. You were used to the American Buenakai, who come from Kentucky and have never seen a Kaiju outside the 1:100th scale statues in their megachurches, but this wasn’t them. This was the Hau Wong Buenakai, who saw the double event and didn’t blink. Basically, they took the ransom and tried to kill the hostage anyway. Did I get that right?
S.G. KRIEGER: Well, of course the Chinazis sold us out, but we had everything under control.
M. HANSEN: So now you’re going to make Dr. Geiszler drift with the kaiju brain again.
S.G. KRIEGER: Exactly!
M. HANSEN: Which is exactly how the damn doomsday cult was planning to reopen the Breach.
S.G. KRIEGER: That’s completely different. Besides, with the hive mind on our side, we could take the fight to them!
M. HANSEN: Well, I can see why you’re so keen on the idea of the hive mind.
S.G. KRIEGER: I knew you would be-
M. HANSEN: Considering you don’t seem to have one of your own.
S.G. KRIEGER: Excuse me?
M. HANSEN: Well, you did just monologue your evil plan. The cult didn't even do that.
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: You- You’re making a big mistake, Marshal. You have no idea what you’re going up against. It'll be your word against mine, and Representative Taylor is an old col-
M. HANSEN: Actually, it’ll be your word against the both of ours.
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: What- What are you talking about?
M. HANSEN: Secretary Taylor isn’t going to want anything to do with you if this recording goes public.
S.G. KRIEGER: You bugged the damn dog?
M. HANSEN: He has a name, you know.
S.G. KRIEGER: Officer Tebutt! Get-
M. HANSEN: Before you try anything especially stupid, you should know that I took some precautions. I had Dr. Gottleib handle the cybersecurity, so this recording is already backed up to the cloud. If he doesn't enter a code once a day, the news goes straight to the UN and TMZ. You should also know that he is a very punctual man.
S.G. KRIEGER: This is blackmail!
M. HANSEN: I’m so glad you understand.
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: What do you want?
M. HANSEN: Dr. Gottleib will keep entering that code on three conditions. One: You leave the Hong Kong Shatterdome now. Two: You resign from the PPDC tomorrow morning. Three: You never come near me or mine again.
S.G. KRIEGER: You- You’re just a damn grunt. I should have known you wouldn’t understand politics. You forget that I still have a piece in the game.
M. HANSEN: This isn’t a damn game, mate.
S.G. KRIEGER: I still have your man.
M. HANSEN: No, you don’t.
PAUSE
S.G. KRIEGER: Dr. Geizer-
M. HANSEN: Dr. Geiszler is safe and sound. You can check in with the officers you assigned to him, if they pick up for you. The Security Office is still under my command, and more importantly, they’re my goddamn comrades- brothers, sisters, and siblings-in-arms, every last one of them. We were here at the end of the world, while you were cooling your heels Stateside. I may not understand politics, Dustin, but I don’t think you understand war.

The Justice Society of America (...sorta)
[All images are owned by DC Comics and Warner Bros-Discovery. Please don’t sue me]
(All clips are thanks to Pablo Calle, unless otherwise stated)
I’d previously covered the first televised appearance of the Golden Age team known as the Justice Society of America (JSA), though they were brought forward to the late 70s. There was one other appearance by the JSA, this time in their proper time thanks to the miracle of time travel.
[NOTE: I know Stargirl also features the JSA (brought forward to the 2000s), but that's an entire series, not an appearance]
PREVIOUSLY ON…
The Legends (consisting of Rip, Sara, Ray, Jax, Martin, and Mick) traveled to 1942 (despite the warning of someone named Rex Tyler) to stop the Germans from detonating an atomic bomb in New York City (3 years before the Americans would have done the same in Japan, despite the fact that the Germans never developed the A-Bomb)
The mission was a success…sort of. The Legends managed to stop the bomb by…
Tumblr media
…placing the Waverider in the way of the torpedo that housed it. However, Rip sent the Legends (except Mick, who was injured) scattered throughout history. The wreckage of the Waverider was discovered by…
Tumblr media
…historian Nate Haywood, who (along with Oliver Queen) revived Mick and set out to retrieve the time-lost Legends. However, they are unable to locate Rip.
On Nate’s suggestion, the Legends return to 1942 (with Nate tagging along) to set events in motion that would alter history just enough to prevent the Germans from acquiring A-Bomb technology supplied to them via a coalition between…
Tumblr media
…a younger version on Arrow villain Damien Dahrk (an immortal ex-member of the League of Assassins)
Tumblr media
…and Flash nemesis Eobard Thawne (the Reverse Flash) However, this meddling does not go unnoticed, as they’re ambushed by the JSA!
[Quick roll call for this version on the JSA (a number of whom weren’t even alive in 1942):
Tumblr media
First off, we have Commander Steel (AKA Henry Haywood), who was never in the JSA in the comics.
Tumblr media
Then we have (left to right) Obsidian (AKA Todd Rice, who in the comics is the son of Green Lantern Alan Scott and wouldn’t debut in the comics until 1983), Dr. Mid-Nite (AKA Dr. Charles McNider, the only actual JSA member in this lineup), Vixen (AKA Amaya Jiwi, the grandmother of the modern Vixen and was created specifically for the Arrowverse)
Tumblr media
…and Stargirl (AKA Courtney Whitmore, who didn’t debut in the comics until 1999)]
…which catches us up. If you would like to watch the episode, it’s available on Netflix or behind your favorite paywall.
We open with…
youtube
The Legends are taken to the JSA’s Brownstone
Tumblr media
...while the JSA talk with their teammate, Rex Tyler (AKA Hourman, another original JSA member). Despite the fact that the Legends claimed to have spoken with him, he says he’s never met them. Therefore, he suggests speaking to them before they send them to a mental hospital.
Tumblr media
Nate then shows Commander Steel the dogtags he wears…that belonged to his grandfather, Henry Haywood.
Meanwhile in Paris, a German officer named Baron Krieger has a meeting with Thawne, who offers them (in exchange for an Amulet Thawne wants), the means to combat the JSA’s team of super-powered individuals.
Tumblr media
Back in the US, the JSA releases the Legends to find out who the hell they are.
youtube
Back on the Waverider, the Legends decide that, since the JSA is calling Martin the leader, they should make it official. Sara then tells Nate he needs to be brought back to 2016. However, Nate realized Henry’s dog tags…
Tumblr media
Nate realizes that, somehow, history changed in 1942, culminating in the JSA being killed during the very mission they just left for (What are the odds?!)
Therefore, the Legends return to 1942, arriving in Paris. Nate gives them information on Krieger.
Tumblr media
Martin mentions he bears at least a passing resemblance to a German singer named Max Lorenz, so will infiltrate the club as Lorenz.
Tumblr media
Martin manages to bluff his way into the club with Sara, Ray, and Jax (wait, a black man in a Nazi club? THAT’S gonna go over well!)
The Legends spread out in search of the JSA or Krieger. Ray manages to spot Vixen undercover (so a black WOMAN in a Nazi club as well? I guess this show isn’t exactly historically accurate) Ray warns Vixen, but she’s not sure if the Legends’ presence is what causes her team to die.
Meanwhile Marin is introduced to a German officer who’s a fan of Max Lorenz and isn’t convinced Martin is who he says he is.
Tumblr media
So, risking blowing his cover, Martin takes that stage.
youtube
(Thanks to GT Media)
Not bad for a physics professor!
Unfortunately, the Germans take offense at Ray not giving the Salute.
Tumblr media
So Ray starts a bar brawl…
Tumblr media
…which is then broken up by the Justice Society.
The two teams convene aboard the Waverider.
youtube
Later, at Krieger’s rendezvous point…
Tumblr media
With that, the Legends and the JSA head into battle. They manage to axquire the Amulet, but Krieger escapes. Ray and Vixen pursue Krieger, but…
Tumblr media
…Krieger injects himself with Thawne’s serum.
Tumblr media
A Nazi serum transforming a man into a musclebound brute. Where have I seen that before?
[NOTE: Most of the video clips featuring Super Soldier Krieger refer to him as Baron Blockbuster, but for obvious reasons (if you read the review linked above), I will be referring to him as Captain Nazi.]
Captain Nazi decimates the Legends and the JSA, but Martin is having issues leading on the fly.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Sara takes charge in the field.
Tumblr media
Mick lays down covering fire (literally) as the teams retreat with the Amulet. However, Ray and Vixen are captured.
Later, Krieger (who has come down from his roid rage) yells Ray and Vixen that, with this successful test, he will replicate the serum, making the German army invincible. He is then about to kill Vixen when Ray steps in, in exchange for Vixen’s life.
Tumblr media
After Krieger leaves to obtain the serum for Ray to replicate (and improve), Ray tells Vixen he has a plan to get them out of this.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile on the Waverider, everyone looks to Martin for guidance, but Martin’s indecisiveness rears its head again.
Tumblr media
Martin has a heart-to-heart with Jax and admits he’s over his head.
Meanwhile in the Medbay…
youtube
So Sara officially becomes captain of the Waverider and leader of the herd of cats known as the Legends.
Inside the Bunker, Ray works on replicating the serum as Krieger leaves a couple of guards to watch them. Then Ray makes his move.
Tumblr media
Ray then intends to use the serum on himself, but then the bunker is attacked by the Legends and the JSA.
Tumblr media
However, Mick and Sara manage to deal with their guards and the teams are reunited.
And what is Krieger doing in this time?
youtube
Damn friendly fire! Well, at least Captain Nazi was taken out. Commander Steel receives minor injuries, but…
youtube
Back at the Brownstone, Hourman receives a visitor…
Tumblr media
…from the Reverse Flash, who vibrates his hand through Hourman’s heart, killing him! Thawne then takes the Amulet and speeds away as Vixen enters the room, discovering Hourman’s body.
Thus ends the episode. However, there are two after-effects from the Legends' sojourn into 1942:
Tumblr media
First, Vixen stows away (essentially joining the Legends), looking for vengeance for Hourman's death.
Second, Nate also joins the Legends, gaining super powers from the super serum...
Tumblr media
...adopting the moniker Citizen Steel. I'm sure his grandfather would be proud.
