I could talk for ages about all of nerdy prudes must die [the song] but specifically the "who will pray for you" part is so good because when richie tells max to repeat himself max turns away and switches from saying you to me and he's really singing about himself and the fact that no one mourned for him when he died. The switch to "or is this the eternal dark without a dawn" from "this is the consequence for what you've done" is so interesting as well because not only does it betray maxs fear at being stuck walking in undeath forever but also this IS his consequence for being a bully all his life, now he is stuck being a bully in death.

and then he flips it right back to richie like he remembered where he is and what he's doing, and richie does repeat after him up until "this is the consequence" before he realizes that maybe this is what he gets, but he still doesn't need to cower before max jagerman anymore, because they really did take away some of his power.

Ok I'm here for Nerdy Prudes Must Die posting.

So I've spent some time trying to nut out why Max reacted the way he did to Richie. Cuz we actually get a weird glimpse into Max's head at a few different points (and what his mind's been like since he died) and it really kinda breaks down that strict dickhead persona he's got going on.

Namely that he actually meant very little to anyone, and practically everybody was better off with him dead and moved on quickly with him gone. Even when Max is in the Waylon house he remarks that the mob's attempt to scare the shit outta him is the "nicest thing anyone's ever done for me", and that he loves them and thinks they're cool. But he's also surprised at them being "nice" to him because he "thought you guys hated me". Hell, even Max's own dad calls him a cuck.

There's a trend both IRL and in media of bullies having low self-esteem, and so they lash out at the people around them in an attempt to maintain some level of power and control and elevate their sense of self-worth. It's obvious not just through Max's behaviour but also things he himself says, and what others say about him, that he doesn't have that high of an opinion of himself—not genuinely. He just acts like he's hot shit in the hopes other people will buy it.

So here's Max, threatening Richie, and trying to get him to repeat after him: "Who will pray for me / when I'm gone?" For Max, the answer was nobody, cuz nobody liked him. He continues, "Or until another Richie comes along?" And this is him trying to instill that fear of replacement into Richie that Max himself felt. We even see this during the football team's discussion of him that they didn't know football was a team sport. The town is so engrossed in their feud with Clivesdale that they don't even care about Max's homicide, and even before their Big Game all they talk about in terms of star players to honour is... Zeke, the team mascot. Fuck their dead star quarterback who was tragically murdered, right? Literally nobody could care less, and Max is quickly forgotten even by Kyle, who he considered his best friend (and who actually secretly hated him).

And Max actually really hates the fact that literally nobody cared about his disappearance or death. He was essentially a nothingburger of a person and easily forgotten. So his way of remedying this revelation, or at least his way of making himself feel better about it, is by instilling that same sense of worthlessness into Richie.

Will you pray for me when I'm gone? Or until another Richie comes along? Will you pray for me when I'm gone? Is this the eternal dark without a dawn? Who will pray for you when your body's gone? This is the consequence for what you've done.

But then Richie shouts "I'm not a loser!" And it's true, he's not—he's Zeke the Fightin' Nighthawk, and everybody loves him (even if he has overactive sweat glands). With Max gone, he's managed to ascend the ranks of social respect and has become someone beloved even by the mob of jocks making up the football team.

But to Max, who was just airing his inner frustrations and internal monologue and projecting it onto Richie, this doesn't read as "I'm not a nerdy prude, I'm not a loser, don't kill me". It means "I'm not a loser like you were, I'm not replaceable like you were, unlike you I have people who care about me and love me."

Which is why Max whirls around and yells, "WHAT DID YOU SAY?"

It's only when Richie explains, "I'm not a nerdy prude, I'm not a loser, don't kill me", that Max realises what he meant and calms down.

"Of course not, Richie."

But for a second there, Max hated himself enough to immediately assume that Richie was calling him a loser. Which I think says a lot about his mentality and his own self-esteem.

the fact that when he died NOBODY gave a shit, except for how it was going to affect the game. like yes he was a terrible person and fucked in the head and yes this is a comedy and their obsession with the game is hilarious but it also makes me sad knowing that he was also a kid and he was BRUTALLY killed and literally nobody cared. nobody. bully or not, this was a child who got impaled through the chest and then hacked into bits and buried beneath the floorboards, and the ONLY thing anybody had to say about it was "we won't let this affect the game!!" and from the sounds of it nobody outside the school was even aware of how shitty he was. they just didn't care

the worst we saw him do when he was alive was hit a dude and flick someone in the balls and then he was murdered, forgotten, and doomed for eternity, and he was EIGHTEEN

oh my god. okay. i was watching will branner performing this song, when hes singing the aforementioned bit ("who will pray for me when i'm gone? or is this the eternal dark without a dawn?") i was thinking to myself "that doesn't really make sense with richie", which is what led me to make this post. HOWEVER. however however i ALSO realized that he's fully facing away from richie, he's not singing to him anymore, which was my supporting evidence.

now. this is the next bit: "who will pray for you when your body's gone? this is the consequence for what you've done!" NOW. this DOES make sense with richie, who is being killed for what he did to max. so i didn't think much of it before. BUT when max says, "this is the consequence for what you've done!" hes STILL FACING AWAY. and more than that, he's looking at himself in whats almost horror, holding out his arms and staring down at himself. go watch it its actually devastating

i think that the whole fuckin part is about himself. "who will pray for me when i'm gone? or is this the eternal dark without a dawn? who will pray for you when your body's gone? this is the consequence for what you've done." is about max jagerman in its entirety and i think some part of him is recognizing that he is in hell and that he is to blame for it.

max tolerates his weirdo girls but lowkey loves them so fuccin much

before i get the stupid comments this takes place in the future, so max and nikki are around 30 here (aka adults). aaanyways, makki fam notes plus my oc's turn around sheet under the cut :)

due to his past trauma with shitty parents, Max doesn't say "I love you" very often. rather, he shows his love via gift giving and actions (ie: making Nikki her favorite coffee in the morning, buying Bella her favorite snacks, etc.)

piggybacking off that last bullet point, Max has told Nikki he loves her when she's asleep (or when he thinks she's asleep, at least).

Bella, their daughter, is noticeably calmer than her parents, but undoubtedly gets her chaotic streak from them both. She's incredibly skilled at charming people then subsequently stealing their wallets from right under their noses. max is eternally proud (and often finds a few 20s missing from his own pockets)

max and Nikki currently work alongside David at the camp as counselors. the new generation of campers are just as chaotic as they were and have long since accepted that maybe this is their karma for putting David and Gwen through hell 20 years ago

both Nikki and Bella are strange sleepers, always managing to end up either upside down, kicking pillows, or spread out taking up the whole bed

max is still sarcastic, jaded, and snarky, but he smiles a bit more now. granted, its more of like a ghost of a smirk, but its a smile nonetheless

Nikki originally wanted to name Bella something wolf-related, like howler or chomper. max, not wanting his kid to get bullied or resent them, suggested "Isabella/Bella", in reference to "those shitty Twilight movies from the 2000's", in his words, to which she agreed. Nikki still calls Bella "pup" or "cub" as nicknames.

the family owns a wolf dog named Koda, who they take to the camp during the summers. Max was the one to pick her out and name her, and he's undoubtedly her favorite person

A/N: I had a great time writing this… I might make it a long fic on my ao3 if there’s enough interest 🫣 Anyway, enjoy!

Richie knew exactly how he ended up as the personal barista of the biggest bully in Hatchfield High. The inability to say no combined with his huge fucking crush on the guy made it virtually impossible for him to avoid it.

Coffee was far from his passion. No, that belonged to the worlds he was able to slip into when watching anime or playing his favorite video games, but Beanies wasn’t a terrible place to work in retrospect. Sure, the customers could be assholes, but that was bound to happen anywhere he worked dealing with the dreaded public. The coffee smell did however make him sick quite often. It seeped into all his clothing, his hair, and his very being. He swore that no matter how much he scrubbed after his shifts there was still a faint scent of coffee. He was convinced the smell had burned itself into his nostrils and he would never escape it.

The scent made it even easier for his predator to find him. Had he not managed to evade Max a time or two he would have thought the jock had a tracking device planted on him. The way he was able to find him at any given moment was uncanny. So he submitted to bringing him coffee as a sort of peace deal.

“You know…” Max started his voice echoing in the empty locker room. He was a big tipsy, they’d just won the biggest game of the season against Clivesdale after all and he couldn’t say no to a few celebratory beers. He sipped the coffee from Richie, turning the cup over in his hands, his leg bouncing with the weight of what he wanted to say.

“Mhmm?” Richie questioned, his head tilted a bit in confusion. Max wasn’t usually one for having difficulties speaking, that was however very normal for himself. Sometimes his mouth moved faster than his brain worked and his words got all jumbled around.

“I absolutely fucking hate coffee,” Max finally whispered.

The weight of his confession hung heavy in the air. If he hated coffee why did he demand such a task from Richie?

Oh… could it be because… surely not?

Richie sucked in a sharp breath, his cheeks on fire as he looked away. Focusing on the nighthawk painted on the wall he began to count backward from ten before he glanced back over at Max, hoping that his flush was less visible now.

“Why?” he simply asked.

“To see you.”

“Me?” Richie asked dumbfounded. Surely he wasn’t hearing things correctly.

Max nodded, throwing the cup of coffee across the room. It landed in the trash can with a soft thud and silence for what felt like an eternity followed. Sobered up by the coffee he scooted closer to Richie on the bench who tensed up as their shoulders collided awkwardly.

Richie mumbled something that Max couldn’t make out, breaking the silence. With a bit of prodding he spoke again, this time a bit louder. “What game are you playing?”

“No game,” he shrugged and Richie relaxed his tense shoulders just a bit.

“I — I should be going,” Richie stuttered. Stumbling to his feet he attempted to run but Max was faster and he found himself pinned against the wall. Knowing a beating was coming he scrunched up his nose and closed his eyes, but it never came. Instead of a fist meeting his face, he felt something featherlight, hesitant, and a bit wet on his cheek for just a moment. His eyes flew open just in time to see Max pulling away from him, a furious red blush on his cheeks.

His eyes cascaded down, hovering over his lips and then up to his eyes. Terror couldn’t even describe his emotions as he found Max slowly moving back towards him, with a hunger in his eyes that he’d never quite experienced in real life before.

Their lips met. Soft, gentle, hesitant of the other.

Just as they were closing in for another kiss they heard loud footsteps coming their way. Panic settled across their faces as they jumped apart just in time for Jason and Kyle to stumble in.

“See ya, nerd,” Max chuckled with a sly wink and joined his friends.

Richie sat in the locker room alone for at least an hour, his lips raw from his constant rubbing trying to process what the fuck had just happened and whether it was nothing more than a dream.

4. very time Max uses his alpha voice, a fairy looses their wings. and he himself looses a part of his heart. I find it awfully confusing that he keeps doing it over and over and over, and then dares to make me feel bad about him feeling bad about Charles feeling bad and the action itself. fuck him honestly. I mean, Charles' on the task, but you know what I mean

The Amazing Digital Battle Circus: The Combatants

Context: The Amazing Digital Battle Circus au

Caine: Welcome back to the Amazing Digital Battle Circus the greatest digital blood sport in the world. I think it be nice to recap who each of our combatants are. One thing about all our combatant is that their all able to recruit npcs to fight along side them

Pomni- Our up and coming star… Nope could not say that with a straight face. From what I’ve seen of the little jester she excel at running and pulling random objects out of her pockets. 

Notable fight: Ragatha vs Pomni

Npc allies: The alligator bandits of Gummigoo, Max and Chad

Gangle the ribbon wrangler and possible champion- The closest thing the Amazing Digital Battle Circus has to a champion, the ribbon wrangler herself Gangle. When not fighting Gangle is a rather nice gal who doesn’t take kindly to bullies which is why she and Jax get along like a wooden house on fire and Jax is the wooden house. This kindness extent to her fighting style as she tries to end things quickly- unless its Jax then she make him suffer-with constricting or crushing attacks.

Kinger the broken veteran king- One of the oldest combatants of the ADBC and is damaged because of it, Kinger is an absolute master strategist. Kinger is one the few combatants to utilize npc in rather clever ways, that the boys at C&A have to adapt in real time for. But don’t think that Kinger sits back and let npc do the talking because Kinger has a mean flurry of blows in his own right. But its sad to think he’s only dangerous half the time due to how crazy he is due to his “break” in sanity.

Ragatha the ragged ruffian- One of the more simple fighter, Ragatha is the third most dangerous combatant in the ADBC. Ragatha utilize her speed as well as knives, like a lot of them, some would say she has knives for days. She tops this speed and knives off with her signature Cloth cutter the comically large meat cleaver which she was rewarded with from the adventure Cooking Carnage

Jax The absolute heel- The eternal loser of the ADBC, takes up the role of an absolute heel. Utilizing short range teleportation through doors and the summoning of bugs (mostly centipedes), Jax is still a strong fighter when not fighting those above.

Zooble- What exactly do you want me to say about Zooble, that they can detach body parts to attack because that’s all they can do. Zooble is only here because they are the “dying” relative of someone working at C&A, nepotism I tell you straight nepotism.

Manny the Manaquin- A fellow of few words Manny is rather dangerous. So dangerous in fact everyone including Gangle and Kinger at his sanest forfeits if they see his name in the brackets.

The abstracted- A curious case of beyond madness, those who have lost themselves to abstraction are no more then feral beast (some more then others) with a similar drive for violence as your truly. The boys at C&A don’t know why abstraction happens. One thing that is for certain though when your put into a ring with one, it’s absolute digital blood bath.

The Hound, the circus beast- One of the abstracted who have completely lost themselves, the hound is an absolute beast. Even before their abstraction they were voracious, ready to attack with teeth and claws flying. Now that they are abstracted, its more of the same, but even more deadly

Kaufmo the killer clown comedian- As the host and commentaor of the ADBC I must stay neutral, but if I can say one thing about Kaumo, is was one the best before his abstraction. Kaufmo attacks with puns bringing them to life with every word. He’d toss fruit at you then literally punch you or he say “your a cut above the rest” then you’d end up in two. I  have to say of the combatants that entered the ADBC I miss Kaufmo the most, because now there is no humor in his fights only words that sound like puns but aren’t.

Queenie the brutal queen- The brutal queen of the arena, who knows no equal and the brawn to Kinger brains. In all the history of the ADBC Queenie has never lost a fight I mean she has tied with Kinger and Gangle a few times but never lost to anyone else. It is a shame that she abstracted, she put true beauty in strength

Slinks the deadly slitherer - Before the one side rivalry between Jax and Gangle, Slinks the worm was our ribbon wrangler greatest adversary, to much greater effect. What they lack in arms they made up for in speed and maneuverability. Now a day due to abstracting they use that speed to bowl you over with reckless abandon  

Big Eye the big guy- The most simple combatant to ever enter the ring, Big Eye was one of the more physically imposing. Of course physicality can only get you so far in the ADBC so Big Eye also had an eye laser. Nothing really changed with his abstraction

Everyone was quiet for a moment. A chilling silence hung in the air, heavy and full of fear. 

“I know what it is,” Steph whispered, breaking the quiet. “My phone!” She held the device in the air. “All my pictures, my messages, my whole life is on this thing!”

“We don’t give a shit about your phone!” the Lords in Black yelled in unison, causing Steph, Pete, and Grace to recoil on the ground. 

The green one stepped forward. “You can lie to yourself, Steph. But you can’t lie to me.” He reached out, brushing his fingers through Pete’s hair. “You know what you have to do.”

“No!” Steph shouted, realization flooding over her. 

He only laughed. “What’s in your pocket, Steph-an-ee?” he asked, grinning as she pulled out the gun. “Put a bullet in his head we can take Maxy-poo right on down to Drowsy Town.”

Richie looked between Steph and Pete. Before he could stop himself, he was lunging forward, jumping toward the green being. “Take me instead.”

“Richie…” Pete began, still splayed out helplessly on the floor. “You’re already dead.”

“I fucking know that!” Richie replied. He turned to the demonic entity, the spawn of the Black and White. “Take my soul. Take my soul, and take Max’s, and let them go free. Surely that’s a good enough deal, right?”

“I suppose that could work…” the demonic entity said. “Let’s see what Maxwell thinks.”

The doors to the gym flew open. “Fucking finally! I’ve been waiting for you to finish talking for ages.” Max walked into the room, his presence making Richie pale, even more so than so was due to being dead. “You’re so fucking lucky i’m scared of monochromatic stuff, otherwise i’d be all over your nerdy green face!”

“How does he know what monochromatic means?” Pete whispered. 

Max stomped his foot on the ground. “I learned it at an anti-bullying assembly, fucknugget!”

“That doesn’t…. why would you… you know what? Nevermind.” Pete turned to Richie. “Are you sure you want to do this? Give up everything and spend an eternity with Max Jagerman?” 

Richie sighed. “It’s that, or you die. And I’m already dead…so. Really there’s only one logical option, Pete.” 

“Let him do it!” Grace yelled, interrupting the moment. “Who fudging cares if a dead man dies some more? We need this evil, corrupting, sexy jock off our backs before he taints the minds of more pure-hearted churchgoers!” She turned to the Lords in Black. “Hurry up and do it! We haven’t got all day!”

The room began to shake, and Richie let out an involuntary squeak, locking eyes with Max across the room. His last word before being consumed by harsh, high pitched laughs and deep, dark blackness was simply, “Fuck.”

While I think that we’re definitely in capitalism’s end-stage, I’m not quite as sanguine, because I suspect that what the contradictions of the system will generate is nothing. i have some thoughts about max's character & the story of NPMD as a whole -- & while these thoughts will absolutely evolve over time, i really want to play with some of the story and dive a little deeper! so, some headcanon thoughts about my portrayal of max & how i imagine things working behind the scenes in the black & white.

this is not meant to bash the show. i'm a huge starkid fan & i love the hatchetfield universe! i've been writing it since 2020, after all. but i found myself a little disappointed with NPMD in terms of its tone & pacing. for me, there's something a little incongruous about the lighter comedy-horror / teen slasher parody tone and the stakes of the lore. especially when compared to the two previous shows & so much of nightmare time. & in general, i feel like the show missed a lot of GREAT opportunities to use the lore it already has to create a larger undercurrent of plot, both for the lords in black storyline & the storyline of hatchetfield high.

personally, i cannot BELIEVE they colored everything in blue, had a bunch of teenagers mask themselves behind facades because being a teenager in high school is hell, had songs about being a literal monster, lyrics about people being "too weak to enslave," the appearance of the black book, the fact that there are five alters and five lords - and pokey wasn't the main villain. yes, i know that this might conflict a little with some nightmare time lore, but i think it would be SO MUCH COOLER (& make more sense) if everything happening with the humans in hatchetfield was the byproduct of a war between the lords in black in a vie for power.

why does hatchetfield in particular suck so much ?? because the church of the starry children started breaking down the barrier between our world & the black and white, so it's CONSTANTLY feeling the influence of the lords in black. and the lords are best at exaggerating everyone's worst instincts. &, of course, all the death & destruction & murder & whatnot. so of course hatchetfield high, as an alter, literally feels like hell.

personally, i think the through line of all three musicals (especially TGWDLM and BF) is the corruption of the humans to act out the will of the lords. so, personally, i believe that the lords are recruiting humans to their side in all of these different realities in order to raise an army and claim the black & white for themselves.

it just makes sense to me! & it's why i feel the pacing and plot falls apart after richie's death. because immediately following that (the best, scariest, most impactful death in the show), we have hatchet town, where everyone turns on each other - and then that plot line goes absolutely nowhere. no one turns on each other! not to mention it's a just a vehicle for callbacks and cameos which is a shame bc it's one of the best songs in the show.

truth be told, these kind of specifics that i headcanon are way more likely to come up when writing webby, but i do think it influence's max's character in a really meaningful way! so, yeah -- a lot of backstory for portrayal notes but that's fundamentally who i am as a person.

i'm not the business of woobifying characters -- i just feel like the one note, shithead bully characterization is both boring, and fundamentally untrue in the show itself, and by the end of the show he's basically just a walking beetlejuice / freddy impression. max has so many lines that indicate that he's not meant to be a flat, irredeemable character - he thinks the nerdy prude gang hates him, he's grateful for their kindness, he paid attention during the harassment assembly, he's clearly the more affectionate & needy part of whatever the gloriously fucked up situationship with grace is. he also has a few lines that indicate something else going on: "the jock you demonize," "you think i seek revenge? ... [the world] needs to be saved and you're too weak to be enslaved," "expose the bloody lie," "who will pray for me when i'm gone? or is this the eternal dark without a dawn?"

i headcanon that max has been succumbing to the influence of pokey for years now. he was a great target - he's angry. as a kid, he went unheard and unhelped from the danger of his father, he had to fight for some form of control, for his voice to be heard. and there's a part of him that knows it's the school, its very location, that gives him so much power. that's his domain, now, for as long as he can hold onto it.

he started to change around the end of his freshman year. he wasn't ever the nicest person, of course -- he's angry, he's traumatized, he's a product of that small town toxicity in a bad way. but he's also been fun, protective, kind of goofy. by the time he's into his sophomore year, the quarterback for the team, all of those good qualities are overshadowed by his need for control, his rage, his cruelty.

i think a neat mechanic is that genuine connections, genuine love and joy, is the only way to fight back against the lords' influence, which is why we see max at his happiest when he believes that he's experiencing a genuine moment of friendship with the nerd crew. -- and his angriest when he dies.

after his death, he grows more inhuman, not less -- scarier, not funnier. the longer he's a puppet of pokey, the more humanity he loses. it's harder & harder to have a conversation with him, to reason with him.

ironically, that's why grace's intervention works. because he's still a teenage guy who thinks he's in love and that simple, genuine emotion is the perfect counter to the lords' influence.

i think his future can go either way - he can be consumed by the black & white, or he can be redeemed and fight to find his humanity again. it all depends on how he grows the relationships with the people around them, & all that power of friendship nonsense!

Soo as I have almost posted every artwork of my current Vtm character, here's one of my old character, Nico. I love this boy so much you can't even imagine. He is also the only original PC that survived the first adventure in my storytellers Berlin by Night chronicle.

Born in 1997 the Rollbergsiedlung in Berlin to a disabled single mother, Nico Lehmann's start in life was underprivileged but still full of love, being taken care of by his grandparents. In his youth, he was bullied for his big size and meek demeanor, so his teachers recommended for him to start a sport and Nico started visiting a local boxing club and got acquainted with the wrong crowd. Trying to fit in and unable to say no, Nico got pulled into the underworld and got hooked on many different drugs, his drug of choice becoming heroin. Since he refused to commit crimes or become a dealer himself, he payed his dealer with his body and consequently became a streetwalker to fund his drug habit.

One evening, he caught the eye of club owner (and malkavian vampire) Max Stirner while offering himself in a Berlin gay club, washed up and high as a kite. Max saw his potential and decided to take him under his wing, letting the young man drink from his blood and helping him become a high-end escort. They started blackmailing Nicos clients with videos they took in secrecy, earning loads of cash together. But Max's plan was crossed when his coterie mate, Maelys Croucant, had to settle a score with him and snatched his ghoul up right from under his nose. Nico fell head over heels in love with the beautiful Toreador woman. Freshly groomed, dressed in a satin gown and in the arms of his eternal lover, that's how Nico took his last breath.

It's gritty and action packed while also being intense and vulnerable but it is not something I'd watch without taking a hard look at the trigger warnings.

Terror in Resonance (series) - this is a psychological thriller and social critique on a lost generation. This may be the least likely to be a tear jerker on this list but worth a watch.
