half asleep group dynamics thoughts: grump x sunshine edition -
pre-musical - the sunshines: maureen ( dangerously so ) collins april roger
the grumps: mark ( light grump, more realist ) benny ( m a j o r grump. claims to be a realist, is just more of an ass )
during musical - the sunshines: maureen ( not quite as dangerously, still way too much ) collins angel mimi
the grumps: joanne ( has taken mark’s place as realist grump ) mark ( more sarcastic sad grump, attempts to pretend to be slightly sunshine ) roger benny ( less ‘grump,’ more manipulative asshole )

Since some of you are apparently stupid, let me spell this out for you.
Benny was not correct, justified, or anything other than a horrible person for demanding the rent.
His reasoning for him doing that has NOTHING to do with money. HE DOES NOT NEED THE MONEY. I doubt he even wants it- however, what he DOES want is for Maureen to back down.
He knows what Maureen is planning, and he knows what she’s like. She explicitly hates him for being a class traitor and is stubborn as all hell. If he had blackmailed her directly, it would have just made her even more determined to protest what he was doing.
Blackmailing Mark by saying “you’ll get Maureen to cancel her protest or else” is his best option, because he knows Mark at least stands a chance.
He is blackmailing them for his own selfish endeavors. That’s it, theres no convoluted reasoning or any ways to justify him for asking for the money.
Benny sucks ass, and if you didn’t understand that, you need to rewatch Rent.

RENT AFTER 10 YEARS
Mark
I like to think that he still lives in the loft and then gets a golden retriever named Cooper to keep him company
His film did really good and he continued making more, the second one is him following Roger and Mimi through the process of withdrawal
He also takes up photography in his spare time
Where he meets a girl named Alexia (one of the models) and he falls in love with her
They eventually get married and have two kids, a girl named Natalia and a boy named Nathan
Mark lived a long life and died of old age with his family around him
Roger and Mimi
I imagine that Roger moved in with Mimi into her apartment
Mimi quit her job at the Cat Scratch and got a job as a dance teacher
Roger also got popular for Your Eyes and he started up a new band
After RENT ended Mimi had to go through the battle of withdrawal and it was tough but she eventually got through it
To celebrate her getting clean they had a party at the Life. Roger took her out into the snow, like in “I Should Tell You” and he proposed
While they were engaged they found out Mimi was pregnant and decided to keep the baby and raise them with all the love they had
They had 2 baby boys born in February that they decided to name Angelo and Marcus, loosely named after Angel and Mark
They were both HIV positive but they decide to enjoy the time they had with them and still love them unconditionally
They later had another baby girl in March and they named her Musetta, she ended up being HIV positive as well
Mimi died after Marcus and Angelo graduated highschool, Roger was devastated but he continued to raise Musetta as a single dad
He died after she graduated and was just happy he gets to be with Mimi again
Collins
Collins never really got with anyone after Angel, for him Angel was the only one
He opened up a restaurant called Angels and it’s doing pretty well
He adopted a boy, named Alex and raised him to be a kind and generous person. Teaching him to live for today
He died before his son got into college, who was taken in by Maureen and Joanne
He died happily knowing his son was in good hands and he’ll see his Angel after so long
Maureen and Joanne
Maureen continued protesting for the homeless and Joanne stayed a lawyer
They both got married a little after RENT ended and adopted a girl named Olivia
Maureen stoped cheating and their relationship wasn’t as rocky as before (of course they still had their rough patches)
After Collins died they took in his son and raised him, telling him things about both his late parents
They both died in a car accident in September
Alex had graduated, Olivia moving in with him
Benny
He and Muffy got a divorce after she found out about him cheating on her
He got kicked out and he started to turn his life around
He went back to the bohemians and eventually everything went back to normal
He stayed single but was still a businessman
He helped the others out with money issues and later bought the building
He didn’t charge them for rent this time
He died due to a heart attack

One of the only changes I liked in the Rent film is how they handled Maureen and Joanne getting back together after Goodbye Love.
Tumblr media
After this very somber moment, all of them realize Angel is what kept them all together. This is really goodbye. In this moment of vulnerability, Joanne and Maureen tell each other that they missed each other and they hug. And it’s really sweet. That is until Joanne says, “I missed your mouth.” She then accidentally bites Maureen’s tongue, who brushes it off. They bicker about how Maureen shouldn’t lie, but then they get back together. It’s cute and funny, but to me it felt like their relationship was just going to be how it’s always been. They lie, fight, and continue to lack trust, and then make up until the next fight. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it.
Here’s how they handle it in the movie.
Tumblr media
Instead of having this loud embrace, Maureen goes up to Joanne and just wipes her tears. Then they hold hands and walk off together. It’s much more subtle, and to me that feels like a big change in their relationship, which was once based on passion and drama. This is a turn in Maureen’s character, who doesn’t explicitly have an arc. I interpret this as her refusing to accept that they need Angel in order to stay together. For the first time, she’s choosing to be there for Joanne, not just out of convenience. She’s finally ready to fight for their relationship.
