Casey was helping RJ clean the common areas of the loft. He was moping the hardwood floor while the chef cleaned the kitchen.
"RJ, can I ask you a question?"
"Always," RJ said with a smile.
"How did you do all of this?"
"All of what?"
"The loft, the restaurant... I mean, this building was obviously neither."
"It was a candy factory," RJ informed him with a smile. "I did it the way I do everything: with a clear plan and one step at a time."
"It must have cost you a ton of money."
"I upcycled a lot of things," he said with a shrug. "And Dom and I did most of the labor."
"Really? Just Dom and you?" Casey stopped mopping to look at him with genuine curiosity.
"Yes, well, up here anyway. The restaurant had to be done to code so I hired an expert. Great man, excellent work ethic."
"How long did it take you?"
"The restaurant took a couple of months but we weren't completely done here until about a month before you guys showed up."
"Is everything upcycled?"
"the plates and the mattresses are brand new. I'm not insane." He let out a crystalline laugh and Casey joined him.
"Thanks, it's appreciated."
"No problem. I have been thinking about doing a couple of changes, but that will have to wait until Dai Shi is defeated."
"I think I speak for everyone when I say we would love to help you."
RJ didn't say anything immediately and Casey went back to his mopping.
"Thanks," The master said with a soft voice.
"This is the home I always wished I had," Casey said, avoiding looking at RJ. "The family I always wished I had."
"That means a lot to me, Casey."
"You mean a lot to me," Casey said, finally looking at him. RJ had blushed so much his cheeks were visible under his stubble. "To all of us."
"And you mean a lot to me," RJ said with a voice that sounded like he was choking with tears he hadn't cried yet. "I couldn't have asked for better students."
"We couldn't have asked for a better master."
RJ turned away from him, so Casey turned away too. He heard RJ sniff once but said nothing. He just smiled at the shiny floor and kept moping.
He couldn't have asked for a better guardian than RJ and he was glad RJ felt the same about them.
"How did you do all this?"

Well, it’s white, but it’s such an interesting layout, and it’s an artist’s house that has a lot of interesting decor. Notice the rusty metal stairs in the entrance that lead to a loft-like 2nd level.
The building also goes down 3 steps to a lower level. A vintage armoire stands in the foyer to store some clothing.
The building is in the Netherlands, and looks like a factory conversion. Doesn’t it have an interesting layout?
On this level is the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The living room is tucked into a corner.
The kitchen island is made of cement, specially formed to fit a small antique chest, and cut out to accommodate seating, so it can be used as a desk.
Large industrial table surrounded by mismatched chairs.
Along the back wall, by the living room corner is a window and stepdown entrance to a bedroom and bath. Above, is the mezzanine.
The bedroom is low to the floor- a night stand low enough to accommodate the mattress on the floor was made by simply placing a board on top of a small cabinet.
Upstairs, a room off the mezzanine serves as the artist’s atelier.

“Shadows of a Legacy” Ch 6 Snippet - Mako x OC Slow Burn
MAKO
Later that night, lying awake in his loft, Mako thinks about the lunch at the diner. More specifically, he thinks about Hanai. The vicious words she used to cut into him and Korra. Her icy glare whenever he spoke. The twitch in her brow and the smug grin half-hidden behind her drink whenever Bolin and Asami said something to embarrass him. He flips over on the lumpy mattress and tries to fall asleep. But she won’t leave his head. It doesn’t matter; he has team practice in the morning to focus on. However, that doesn’t stop the thoughts of her from returning while he straps on his gear.
Her annoyed, puffy cheeked pout when he spun around to chew her out for tripping him. The dimple near the corner of her mouth when she ugly laughed that made his stomach tie in knots. A sharp pain aches his heart. The same way it did when he saw her and froze.
What the hell was that? Wait-why the fuck does it matter?! She's still a stuck-up, know-it-all bitch, who cares if she got... cute?
A word he would have never used to describe her before. Thankfully, Bolin comes down from the apartment the same time Korra surfs in through the window and he doesn’t have to think about it.
"You do know there's a front door, right?" his brother smirks at her.
She grumbles something incomprehensible and stomps over to gear up then joins them for warm-ups.
Korra catches the medicine ball and groans, "What's the big idea with making me train this early in the morning?" She bends her elbows to toss the ball to Bolin and dips her voice. "The morning is evil."
Bolin catches it and shrugs. "We're the rookies so we get the worst time slot in the gym."
Mako huffs as it gets passed to him. "And you're the rookiest of us all. We gotta get you up to speed if you want to survive in the tournament." He tries to push away intruding thoughts from his mind and accidentally tosses the ball back to Korra with unnecessary roughness. "Deal with it!"
"You deal with it!" She tosses the ball back to him, and he's knocked completely off his feet.
He lands skidding on his back. Don't. Say. Anything. She's the Avatar and she will kill you.
“There are my little hardworking street urchins.”
Mako picks himself up as Butakha strolls in and introduces himself to Korra, then he replaces his hat and reaches into his coat for a fat stack of Republic City yuans he hands to a grinning Mako. “Here's your winnings from the last match.”
Perfect, a few more wins and we can get out of-
“Ah-ah! Not so fast,” Butakha wags his thick sausage finger at him. “First, you owe me for the Avatar's new gear-” a few bills disappeared from the top “-gym and equipment rentals for last month.”
Mako reaches for his pocket, but the slimy coordinator stops him, takes payment for rent and a new, new to him at least, personal loan for groceries. He’s left empty-handed and snaps an angry pout at his little brother. “A grocery loan?”
“What?” Bolin shrugs and rubs his stomach. “I'm a growing boy!”
“Oh! And one more small item of business. The Fire Ferrets need to ante up thirty thousand yuans for the Championship pot,” Butahka adds nonchalantly.
“Thirty thousand yuans!?”
“Sorry, kids. You've got till the end of the week to come up with the dough, or else, you're out of the tournament.” He pats Mako on the shoulder, then leaves the gym.
Bolin cranes his head in Korra’s direction. “You wouldn't happen to have a secret Avatar bank account, overflowing with gold, would you?”
Her mouth twists into an awkward grimace as she turns her pockets inside out to show that they're empty. “I got nothing. I've never really needed money. I've always had people taking care of me.”
“Then I wouldn't say you have nothing,” Mako says in an indifferent tone. He picks up the medicine ball and packs it into an equipment bag.
“Sorry, I didn't mean…”
“No, it's alright,” Bolin says with a meek smile. “It's just... ever since we lost our parents, we've been on our own.”
“I'm so sorry. I didn't know.”
Mako zips the bag and throws it over his shoulder. “So anyway, I can see if I can pull a double at the plant if you two keep up with drills.”
“Oh oh or I've been thinking I could maybe see if any of the construction sites need a cleanup crew!” Bolin claps.
“I thought construction companies only wanted metalbenders?” Korra asks.
“Yeah, but they hire regular earthbenders to clean up after jobs when the metalbenders are too tired.”
Mako sighs, “you tried that once and got fired because you made Pabu a mini Republic City. Come on, Bolin, be serious.”
Bolin lowers his gaze and brings Pabu close to his body. “I was serious…”
“Don't worry. I'll take care of it.”
His supervisor allows him to take the extra shift but says it will reach his limit for overtime the owner is willing to pay this month. It might be enough to complete the thirty thousand needed for the pot if he adds all of their savings to it. With Korra on the team, they might have a better chance to win this year. It’s another year of being stuck in the attic if they don’t.
Mako leaves his jacket and scarf in the employee locker room and grabs a thick leather protective apron, rubber gloves, and a forging mask. He and the other lightning generating firebenders line up to enter a large open factory floor with several ceiling-high electrical capacitors in the middle of the room. Pairs of firebenders and earthbenders manipulate flames and coal into roaring boilers while the lightning generators file into single strip rows on both sides of the machines.
He stands in front of his station, his partner on the other side who waits for his green light. A few of the council issued “morale” posters reflect on the glass visor of his mask. Pin-up girls clad in all types of risque swimsuits riding giant bolts of lighting. Showgirls clutching onto dim-witted, grinning Lees snapping lighting from their fingertips. All with slogans like: “The City needs it’s Lightning Champs” or “Dames love a Man with a Spark”. Bullshit, it’s all propaganda...
His station light shines red and his partner charges up his hands then releases his bolt. Mako inhales through his nose and on the exhale he points his index and middle fingers together to launch his. Now his partner. Then back to him.
Inhale. Charge.
Exhale. Release.
Back and forth for hours, passing the whistle for lunch and the whistle for shift change. He gets a new partner and the process repeats itself. Sometimes the guys chat while they work; about the latest game, about their wives or girlfriends-sometimes both. One guy always complains about a funny itch he gets after seeing some of the girls around Dragonflats Borough. Sometimes they try to talk to him. Other times they don’t. They know by now he’s too serious. Too focused. On his job, his team, his little brother.
No time to waste thinking about cute girls who return home from a long time away from the city.
The steam whistle sounds. His shift ends.
A quick stop to get dinner for himself and Bolin, and he’s back at the arena by sunset. He drags himself up the stairs and calls out, “Bo! I'm back! Picked up your favorite dumplings.” Mako groans and his body hits the couch with a thud. He stretches his neck over the edge of the couch. After a snap and a few pops, a wave of tension rolls away from his shoulders. The still warm dumplings call to him. He flicks open the paperback and shoves one of the fluffy bundles of meat and barbecue in his mouth. Strangely the sound of the bag rustling didn’t send his brother or Pabu flying down from the loft. Mako slows his chewing to call through a mouthful, “Bolin? You here, bro?”
No answer or sound except traffic outside.
“Huh.” He swallows and reaches for another one, but the briny smell of Yue Bay catches his attention. He twists to look out at Air Temple Island behind him then smirks. “Figures, I bet the little lovebird is making a house call.”
Mako pulls himself off the couch, leaves dinner behind, and walks over to the dock while thinking of a way to convince the White Lotus on guard to radio over to the island.

Kommune 1
by Yi Xu & Aglaia Beer
Week 4, Exercise 3: The Culture of the Salon
Demonstrations in Germany (1968) & General informations about Kommune 1
The story of Kommune 1 starts from 1968, when a series of demonstrations were started by young students who believed the forming of SPD will encourage authoritarian and antidemocracy in society. These movements were followed by violent conflicts between overreacting police and provoked student. Including the gunshot of RudiDeutchke. A wave of more aggressive protests swept West Germany.
Presenting the members of Kommune 1 Among these young protestants there is Rainer Langhans, german writer and film producer and also the cofounder of kommuner 1. He and his friends Fritz Teufel, Dorothea Ritter, Dieter Kunzelmann among others, are all active participants in the ‘68 cipher. The nine man and woman, later joined by famous film actress Uschi Obermaier, started Kommune 1, an open and hedonic collective lifestyle to protest against the traditional nuclear family where human being cannot properly develope an independent personality.
Description of the living conditions and room
Kommune 1 wanted to explore a new way of living. Sharing and transparency was the priority in the community. The motto was: „You can do what ever you want, but you have to do it visible.“ As a result, the private sphere became public and the whole property was shared among everyone. The Kommune was located in different apartments in West Berlin. Finally they moved to the second floor of an old factory building in Moabit, which is is an inner city district of Berlin. There, they used to live in a 200 m2 room, which was only divided by pillars. The large room served as a living room, as well as a kitchen and bedroom. On top of that, eyewitnesses said they even hang out the toilet doors to avoid privacy. The walls and pillars of the room were painted in a simple white color and the wooden floor was partly covered by different kind of carpets. Big windows were situated on both longitudinal sides of the room and the window sill served as sitting possibilities. A large number of mattresses was laying on the wooden floor. They were used for several purposes like living room arrangements and beds. A lot of social and political discussions took place on the mattresses. Furthermore, a hammock hung from the ceiling. In the center of the room was a small television beside the central column. The community liked to gather around this spot. Based on the photos, it seems to be the most important spot for the community life. The kitchen, entrance and bathroom door were situated across from the mattresses. On pictures, we can see Kommune 1 sitting around a big dining table, as well as around a wooden board on the floor. Pillows and boxes were spread all over the room as seatings.
In November 1969, a gang of three Rockers raided the commune and destroyed the rooms. The energy of Kommune 1 was spent and the members went separate ways. Today, the building is renovated as lofts and can be rented for vacations.
The Influence of Kommune 1
Kommune 1 started a „prototype“ community, which was the forerunner to other Communes and shared flats. Kommune 1 was the starting point of seeing the personal as political. It existed for a couple of years only, but they had a great influence. Kommune 2, 3, Wielandkommune and High-Fish Commune followed. It was the time of the „sexual revolution“, and young Germans saw the communal living and themselves as being part of a wider political movement which was revolutionizing all aspects of life.

More than merely saving time wasted tossing and turning, having a bed frame that supports your mattress is beneficial. It also saves you money! The support offered by a foundation beneath your mattress minimizes the typical wear and tear on the mattress, extending its life. Thanks to plenty of cushioning on the seat, back, or both, upholstered dining chairs give hours of relaxation for your visitors. Small accents, such as button tufting and padded arms, can elevate the aesthetic of your upholstered seats. You can also go for a more informal style by using basic, fitted upholstery. In either case, you'll have comfortable seats that entice your visitors to sit and stay awhile.
The airflow surrounding the bed is improved by bed frames Christchurch. This keeps heat from getting trapped beneath the skin, which could lead to an uncomfortable night of hot flashes. Top Reasons to Choose a Natural Pillows
We spend about one-third of our lives in bed. Yet many people don't think twice about buying a synthetic pillow that contains toxins and even feathers from live animals. That rash buying decision is not suitable for your health, sleep, animal welfare, and the environment.
If you really want to make a simple upgrade in the bedroom that will change all that, then it is recommended that you buy a natural pillow.
There are many benefits of natural pillows as well as many reasons to choose them over synthetic ones:
Natural Pillows Regulate Body Temperature
Pillows that are filled with synthetic materials generally overheat very quickly. This is because synthetic materials, such as polyester, don't regulate your body temperature well while sleeping. Furthermore, these synthetic materials are also water-resistant, meaning that unlike natural materials, e.g. organic cotton and organic wool, they don't absorb body moisture.
In short, synthetic pillows don't breathe like natural pillows. Natural pillows, on the other hand, regulate body temperature well and hence don't overheat.
Natural Pillows Are Anti-Bacterial
Natural pillows are exceptional when it comes to keeping your bed free from bacteria. Thanks to their ability to absorb most of their weight in moisture without feeling damp, the organic materials in natural pillows repel moisture, allowing it to pass through the fibres without retaining it. This dry 'microclimate' that natural pillows create makes it virtually impossible for bacteria, dust mites, and allergens to survive. So, if you want to sleep healthy, it is recommended that you choose a natural pillow and avoid the synthetic materials that attract allergens and bacteria.
You Can Adjust Your Pillow's Height
Most synthetic pillows available on the market are sewn shut. This means whatever filling is inside, it cannot be added to and removed. This isn't the case with natural pillows. They are generally very customizable, and many manufacturers allow you to personalize them according to your specific needs and preferences. With a customization option, you can:
Add extra pillow filling so that you have a higher loft pillow (suitable for those who sleep on their side) or
Remove some pillow filling to have a lower loft pillow (suitable for those who sleep on their back).
Natural Pillows Are Safe for You and the Environment
Synthetic pillows are bad for the environment. They are bad for your health too, as they carry carcinogens that can generate problems like heart, lung, and skin cancer. Apart from this, studies suggest that synthetic materials like polyester can cause various respiratory problems. There are no such concerns when it comes to natural pillows because they don't contain any potentially dangerous, harsh chemicals. As a result, they don't leave a long-lasting, adverse effect on the environment.
These are some of the top reasons to choose a natural pillow. However, when buying one, make sure that the pillow is actually organic, as some manufacturers can still treat their natural materials with chemicals and pesticides or blend their natural material with synthetic ones to cut the costs.
Rockdale Mattress Factory designs and manufacturers exclusive natural pillows. Feel free to contact us for further information.

OWIU Studio brings Japanese style to Biscuit Loft apartment in Los Angeles
Architecture and design studio OWIU Studio has renovated an apartment in an old factory in Downtown Los Angeles, adding Japanese design elements to the industrial space.
Biscuit Loft is located in the Biscuit Company Lofts, a seven-storey factory built by a bakery company in 1925 that was converted into flats 15 years ago.
Top: the living area. Above: a guest bedroom doubles as a tea ceremony room
The Los Angeles firm renovated a 1,620 square-foot (493-square-metre) home on the ground floor of the building, extending the mezzanine balcony to create a tranquil home office.
"[We] created additional quarters and distinct uses for each room," said OWIU Studio.
"The result is an apartment that merges Asian design principles with a downtown Los Angeles industrial edge, to create a comfortable living environment that inspires thoughtful daily routine and encourages a mindful lifestyle."
A futon platform doubles as a raised seating area
At ground level, the apartment now has an open plan living area with the kitchen and dining area tucked under the mezzanine level, next to a guest bedroom and en suite.
The guest bedroom doubles as another contemplative living space, with a lot of Japanese-style built-in storage including integrated cupboards and shelving.
On the floor, raised platforms that can double as a bed frame with the addition of a mattress conceal more storage.
A concrete kitchen island doubles as a dining table
"The guest bedroom design was inspired by the simple Japanese Ryokan, a traditional inn and guest experience established in the 17th century," explained OWIU Studio.
"The minimalist room is lined with tatami mats and will have a Japanese futon for when guests stay over the apartment," it added.
"Its secondary use will function as a space for tea ceremonies and gatherings, as typical in a Ryokan, as well as a serene atmosphere for reading, creative brainstorming and resting."
Paper lanterns hand over a circular dining table
In the main living area, sofas and chairs are arranged at the far end, under a double-height space with large windows. Noguchi Akari pendant lights dangle over this lofty space, drawing attention to the high ceilings.
There is a small circular table for eating at, but Biscuit Loft's main dining table is a large concrete slab that doubles as a kitchen island.
OWIU Studio used a palette of biscuity neutrals
A sculptural wooden staircase that leads up from the ground floor with a guardrail that continues to wrap around the mezzanine, jutting out to form a geometric Juliette balcony by the home office area.
"The staircase is assembled from 10 custom fabricated panels and features four angled interventions," said OWIU Studio.
A geometric wooden guardrail wraps the extended mezzanine
The designers used wooden pilotis to extend the mezzanine by 130 square feet (12 metres).
This intervention serves a dual function of creating extra space for a desk and reading area and creating a buffer zone before the main bedroom.
The staircase is made of 10 wooden panels
For the main bedroom, OWIU Studio added a new walk-in-wardrobe space alongside the en suite bathroom.
OWIU Studio decorated the loft space with neutral white walls and biscuity toned accents such as buttery blonde wood and furnishings in natural materials such as linen and rattan.
The extended mezzanine holds a home office
Industrial elements left over from its days as a factory, such as a large air vent above the mezzanine, have been preserved but painted over.
Textured render has been applied to the main bathroom walls for contrast, complemented by oxidised fixtures and fittings and a concrete sink.

OWIU Studio, which stands for The Only Way Is Up, is an architecture and design studio based in Los Angeles.
More Los Angeles interiors include a loft apartment in an old furniture factory by Stephen Kenn Studio and Enclosures Architects' renovation of a 1930s flat by modernist architect Rudolph Schindler.

1920s Arts District firehouse opening as boutique hotel next week
An Arts District firehouse dating back to the 1920s will reopen to the public Monday as the neighborhood’s first boutique hotel, according to a release for the project.
The Firehouse Hotel at Seventh Street and Santa Fe Avenue still holds a number of its original features, including the wood and concrete floors, pressed-tin panels, trussed ceilings, and “niches originally built to hold statuettes of the Virgin Mary.”
But within the 90-year-old framework of the building, there have also been a lot of changes. The ground floor now houses a restaurant and bar, as well a daytime coffee shop and retail storefront.
The top floor holds the majority of the guest rooms. The rooms are named after colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue—which are incorporated into the decor, along with vintage furniture and custom light fixtures. Each room comes with its own kitchenette and toiletries by perfumer Le Labo.
The hotel is run by Dustin Lancaster of Bar and Hotel Covell in Los Feliz. Lancaster developed the project with Tyler Stonebreaker of Creative Space and with design by Sally Breer of ETC.etera.
The rooms start at $300 a night.

Though this is the first fancy hotel to open in the neighborhood, it might not be alone for long.
Proposals for a number of hotels have surfaced in the last three years, including a 66-room hotel that would repurpose an old mattress factory and a plan to bring hundreds of hotel rooms into the area by way of a glassy Bjarke Engels-designed project alongside the LA River.
The Firehouse Hotel’s location would put it in close proximity to a new, nine-story office building that will get underway later this year, an outpost of the private club Soho House opening this year, and a large mixed-use complex with retail and 110 live/work lofts.
