'Possessor' (2020) film
Tumblr media
-watched 8/4/2024- 2 stars- on Tubi (free)
Another strange movie similar to 'Infinity Pool'. Although, this one was too violent and bloody to my notion.

Torrey- Torrey (Slumberland)
Looks like Torrey has been around since 2019, but here’s the San Francisco Bay Area group’s self-titled sophomore album. It’s also their first on Slumberland, and it’s another dream pop gem for the label. It was recorded, produced, and mixed by band member Matthew Ferrara in San Francisco, CA. The album kicks off with “Rain,” a slow, beautiful song that could easily fit on a Cocteau Twins album. It turns into major distortion by the end. Next up is “No Matter How,” a blast of more distorted guitars that create a beautiful mix. Here’s the video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1ANYipKZME Track 3, “Moving,” is a sonic, echo-laden blast of distortion that brings Lush to mind. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXFHmxfYV9I  “Bounce” is my favorite so far. Jangled shoegaze with great harmonies to close the song. It’s a song I’ll have on repeat for a while. Following the bouncing red ball here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLe0Pa1Jca0 Track 5, “Hawaii,” follows as a quick burst of megaphone-treated vocals and blasting guitars. Next, “Garage Intermission,” is just that, a short, swirling guitar-filled instrumental piece. Track 7, “Slow Blues,” is a slow, dreamy keyboard track filled with lively vocals that leads to guitar shredding solos. “Pop Song” speeds things up again with soaring guitars and smashing drums. Next, “July (And I’m),” is another short, but spacey instrumental filled with eerie vocals. “Happy You Exist” is all over the place with a pipe organ opening onto fuzzy guitars, dreamy synths, and gonging synths(?). Track 11, “Really AM,” slows the mood down a bit with its distorted, out of tune-sounding intro, but then the song builds and builds into a real rocker with its thumping bass line. The album ends where it began with “We're Dancing (End).” It’s a blast of sonic bliss that brings My Bloody Valentine to mind with its distorted beauty. Torrey’s new album is 12 songs clocking in around 35 minutes filled with a variety of dream pop, shoegaze, indie music complete with some instrumentals that add to the mix. Here’s hoping Torrey will be hitting the road to perform these songs live! ERIC EGGLESON

Indie Pop | Torrey - “Bounce”
Tumblr media
The Bay Area band Torrey embarks on a journey through a dreamlike realm with their second album, a self-titled collection of twelve tracks that navigate the realms of shoegaze and moody indie rock. These guitar-centric compositions meander through atmospheric soundscapes, melding into a cohesive aura of ethereal joy. In the process of creating this album, siblings Ryann and Kelly Gonsalves embraced a newfound liberty, crafting a meticulous recording setup that enabled them to pursue every creative whim, resulting in their most thoughtful project thus far. The album shines with a spectrum of soft luminescence, its meticulous structure artfully veiled by a hazy sheen that enhances rather than detracts from its emotional depth. Forming Torrey in 2018 during their time in San Francisco, Ryann and Kelly's initial releases, the 2019 EP "Sister" and the 2021 LP "Something Happy," both self-released and recorded at the iconic Tiny Telephone studios, showcased a pristine, sparkling pop sound. The development of their latest album marked a shift to a more deliberate and expansive approach. The duo exchanged voice memos, delving into new melodic concepts, guitar tunings, and techniques, gradually building upon song foundations with detailed drum arrangements. Eventually, a home studio was established in Ryann's residence, where Matthew Ferrara from the Umbrellas contributed to the recording process. The collaboration among the group was naturally synergistic and relaxed, fostering an experimental spirit and a genuine connection to their music and to each other. They aimed to capture the essence of the album swiftly, to preserve the excitement of the project, infusing each stage with thoughtful intention and meticulous care. New Post has been published on https://www.atomheartmagazine.com/vincitori-oscar-2023/
Miglior film: trionfo per The Daniels e Edward Berger
Quindi lei è stupenda e io sembro praticamente uno scroto“.
Ecco tutti i vincitori degli Oscar 2023
Miglior film: Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Miglior attrice protagonista: Michelle Yeoh per Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Miglior attore protagonista: Brendan Fraser, per The Whale.

EO (Poland) – directed by Jerzy Skolimowski
The Quiet Girl (Ireland) – directed by Colm Bairéad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction(s): All Quiet on The Western Front/Argentina, 1985
While the former is an anti-war film appreciated by critics & audiences, the latter was the Golden Globe winner in the same category this year. Hence, the two are gonna be strong contenders.
Best Documentary Feature

All That Breathes – Shaunak Sen, Aman Mann, and Teddy Leifer
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed – Laura Poitras, Howard Gertler, John Lyons, Nan Goldin, and Yoni Golijov

Both themes have been a crucial topic of discussion among cinephiles and filmmakers - and the Academy might be a part of it as well.

The Elephant Whisperers – Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga

Best Animated Short Film
Nominees:
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse – Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud
The Flying Sailor – Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis
Ice Merchants – João Gonzalez and Bruno Caetano
My Year of Dicks – Sara Gunnarsdóttir and Pamela Ribon
An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It – Lachlan Pendragon
Tumblr media
Prediction: My Year of Dicks
A teenage girl's obsession with finding the right partner for sex amid a comedic journey of disappointment and self-discovery can win the golden man for depicting female sexism.
Best Original Score
Nominees:
All Quiet on the Western Front – Volker Bertelmann
Babylon – Justin Hurwitz
The Banshees of Inisherin – Carter Burwell
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Son Lux
The Fabelmans – John Williams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prediction: The Banshees of Inishrein/Babylon
While John Williams has become the most nominated living person (53 - winning 5), Hurwitz and Burwell would be giving The Fabelmans' score a tough competition. While the former gives the 1920s Silent Hollywood vibe, the latter's Irish folk composition is full of humor and intense tension as the film progresses.
Best Original Song
Nominees:

Prediction: Naatu Naatu
Undoubtedly, this "feel good" dance number can make the Academy members shake their legs as well. The audience's love and the Golden Globe for Keeravani are enough to ensure an Oscar for another South Indian composer (first since AR Rahman for Jai Ho).
