Have you all ever wished that when you sang it sounded similar or exactly like someone else?

I’ll start first. I have like, two people for certain and some people that would be interesting.

Number one person I want to sound like it’s Matt Bellamy from Muse. His voice has an incredible range and he can hold a note. He has dramatics in his voice and it’s just one heck of a show just listening to his and his band’s music.

Second place is Dan Reynolds from Imagine Dragons. I don’t know why but the power that guy has in his voice would be amazing. I’m sure it messes up the throat though. His range and his variety of songs leaves a lot of wiggle room for fun and freedom.

Ok so honorable mentions:

Patrick stump of fall out boy: for similar reason to Dan Reynolds. There’s power and soul in that voice.

Diana Ankudinova: I’ve only ever heard her song “I can’t help falling In love with you” by Elvis Presley but like, she has one of the most unique voices I have ever heard and I am in love with the power and depth that is in that voice.

Chester Bennington of Linkin Park: I grew up with this guy and his work with Linkin Park and as a kid I thought he was the coolest singer ever. The way he could mix emotion with grit was absolutely ingenious. He still is one of my favorites. However there is only one Chester Bennington and that’s why he’s an honorable mention.

Dorian Electra: Their control over their voice is absolutely exquisite and I want to know their secrets but also don’t cause like, I want them to keep their secrets. Plus how they poise themselves in both words and dramatics is just the best.

Mitsuki: There is something both comforting and sad in Mitsuki’s voice and I’m all for it. Cause you can have a range from Strawberry Blonde to Francis forever.

Cody Carson of Set it Off: Admittedly I don’t listen to a lot of set it off but his voice is absolutely chaotic and powerful and just gives huge middle finger energy. Also at their concerts the band plays gen z hyped songs like Discord by Living Tombstone to Ghost Rule by DECO*27 (I believe).

Jinkx Monsoon: Jinkx’s voice is seductive, charismatic and has a classic feel to it and that is amazing for them. Plus they can belt some numbers if it comes to it.

Farewell to a friend

My friend I moved to LA with introduced me to Joe Matt when I first moved here. They had met on Myspace and she said I should meet him. Coming from a small town and growing up conservative, I was introverted and had a hard time meeting people, making friends, or even talking. So when I met Joe, I was immediately swept away by his huge personality and inviting nature. He'd ask questions and be intensely interested in the people he met; it made me feel for once like even I might be an interesting person. It was so comforting to find someone I could so easily talk to, someone who was brutally honest, always willing to offer criticism, but never judgemental.

And oh how we talked. The initial shared interest in films (I was thrilled to find a fellow Buster Keaton fan) and literature was a constant binding force in our friendship over the years. Having mostly ignored comics after my childhood, Joe Matt rekindled my love for comics—both because I found his comics so refreshingly honest and insightful and because he introduced me to so many other great works, from his Toronto pals Seth and Chester Brown to Charles Burns to E.C. Segar's brilliant Popeye comics, a whole new world opened back up to me and I started to find myself interested in drawing again.

I could go on and on about how much he influenced me, not just in comics, but in life: getting rid of my car, discovering my love for coffee, always searching out the ridiculous in not just life around me, but in myself as well. He was one of the funniest people I've ever met, always able to find something to laugh about. Truly, Joe was a singular man, and his time he shared with me made my life so much better. I miss my friend. I regret not having had at least one more conversation with him, but then I'd have wanted at least one more…and so on.

20 Shows: Gunsmoke

For people too old to care if Han or Greedo shot first, the big pop culture debate is “Chester or Festus?” Namely, who was the better deputy to Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke? I’m a Chester man. I think Festus has his strong points, but he’s also such an absurd parody that I roll my eyes half the times when he opens his mouth.

I’m a recent fan of the show. A buddy of mine was watching a lot of westerns on Me TV and I started checking some of them out. Gunsmoke quickly became a favorite. Not all of it, though. I love the first six seasons of 30-minute episodes. I don’t mind the expansion to 1-hour episodes.

It’s the transition to color that loses me. A lot of those episodes look garish to me. I’ll still watch them, but I get distracted by the visuals. A big factor in my Chester/Festus ranking is just Chester being there for the episodes I liked.
