please stop calling dazai/ranpo ‘souheki’
I posted this originally on twitter, but it unfortunately didn’t get a lot of traction, so I figured I’d post it on here as well in hopes it would get a little bit more traction and I apologize in advance for the fact I will be ‘clogging tags’ so to speak to get the word out.
I generally don't like to flood tags but people who tag Dazai/Ranpo (also known as Daran/Ranzai) as ‘souheki’, please don't. Yes, it is their team name in the japanese version of 55 minutes, but it not unique to BSD the same way ‘soukoku’ is for Dazai and Chuuya.
'Souheki’ in japanese is commonly used to describe an unbeatable pair or duo/matchless people, alternatively referred to as 'two treasures' or the lit translation 'double jade' as the japanese for heki is the chinese for jade.
This being said: MANY OTHER SERIES' USE THIS NAME FOR CHARA DUOS!! If you look up souheki, especially in Japanese, you will find everything from the Lan Brothers and Lan Juniors fom MDZS, Ferdibert from FE3H, Haikaveh from Genshin Impact, and even Fukumori FROM BSD. It does not belong exclusively to Dazai and Ranpo, so you are making the search all the more difficult for everyone involved, and you are burying and missing out on amazing, pre-existing content of them that has been around for almost ten years now.
I’ve been a big shipper of Dazai and Ranpo for that same amount of time, and the ship name has always only ever been Daran/Ranzai. The JP fans have never changed it, because ship names and team names are not equal or interchangeable. (Similarly, content intended to be shippy for them is tagged as Dachuu/Chuuda, never SKK.)
Additionally, soukoku was introduced the second Dazai and Chuuya were announced as a duo in bsd. The term souheki towards Dazai and Ranpo was not mentioned at all throughout the series until 55 minutes, which wasn’t written until 4 years after bsd was created and Dazai/Ranpo already had a ship name. (I’ve been here since 2013, trust me it has only ever been this.)
Once a ship name is created, it is not changed, especially in the japanese fandom where we borrow the ship names. (dachuu, kunizai, akuatsu as examples)
The JP fans never even brought much attention to the souheki concept aside from how it catered to the ship itself. The ship name(s) has not changed for ten years.
For further comparison, this is how the google search looks when you search soukoku / double black:
And this is what happens when you search souheki / ‘double jade’ ‘twin jade’:
This has reached so far that even Japanese fans are seeing this and being confused because, again, ‘souheki’ is not unique to just Dazai and Ranpo!! And it has been used for other ships!
If you are posting content for them, please please PLEASE tag it as daran/randaza/ranzai/etc. Please stop using souheki and muddying the waters to find content of these two.
if you want to find content for them, these are their tags in jp:
乱太 / らんだざ / randaza or ranzai (top ranpo content ONLY)
太乱 / だざらん / dazaran or daran (top dazai content ONLY)
太乱太 (content that can be translated either way / switch)
Please keep in mind that ships are tagged accordingly for who tops/bottoms or is the one who may have the more confident or dominant personality in jp fandom to filter content and those who dislike one dynamic will not be exposed to it. This is not an argument over top/bottom discourse. Jp fans do not have that problem. When you write/read a fic with top A, their actions/thoughts/etc will differ greatly from reading bottom A content 9/10 times. Some people have a preferred character interpretation like everyone else and are much more consistent with filtering.
While I am certainly happy daran/ranzai are finally canonically confirmed to be the agency's 'unbeatable duo/two precious treasures' (souheki), it is misleading and quite frankly incorrect to claim this is their ship name and to please keep tagging them as daran/ranzai so older content doesn't get brushed under the rug and completely ignored/missed altogether in this attempt to give them a 'special name'. They dont need to combat skk. They are unique and special as they are!
Please give attention to the content made by fans of Dazai/Ranpo fans that have existed for a long time now! We promise there is actually a TON of content, it is not lacking whatsoever. You’re just looking under the wrong name!
As a really big fan of Dazai and Ranpo for a very long time, who is friends with a majority of the Dazai/Ranpo fanartists in Japan and has spent a concerningly scary amount of money for content of them over the years, I hope you will consider this advice. I really want fans of Dazai/Ranpo to come together, enjoy content old and new, and make more in the future together. (〃>_<;〃)
Please share this around if you could!
#Dazai Osamu#Edogawa Ranpo#bungou stray dogs#souheki#daran#ranzai#it pains me to tag it as souheki but i really want people to know about this cuz this misinformation is spreading way too far these days ;;

Why I like Satosugu [Part 3]
part 1
part 2
I like satosugu as a pair because of all of the juxtapositions, like Gojo's association with fiery yang energy compared to Geto's association with cool yin energy. They have a lot of of contrasting traits, from their cursed techniques to their demeanors (here's a twitter thread that talks about this more as part of a larger analysis of Geto's association with femininity).
Gojo came from one of the main three jujutsu sorcerer families, whereas Geto came from a mundane background. As Akutami was choosing their names, he wanted there to be a duo-like feel, even as he was creating a nuance of the former as a natural born genius and the second as a genius through effort.
When they were teenagers, their philosophies couldn't have been more different. Yet they spent their youth together. Played basketball, went to the arcade and got fast food after school. Fought back to back and walked side by side.
And then everything collapsed. Gojo unintentionally left Geto behind, who stewed in his own misery.
But even in this, they were a pair.
The Hidden Inventory • Premature Death Arc name comes from one interpretation of 懐玉•玉折 (the original JP name of the arc). Another interpretation, which is more accurate in my opinion, references two separate idioms about jades. 懐玉 (harbouring jade) comes from the full phrase "harbouring jade in hemp cloth" (likely where the hidden inventory name came from). This idiom can refer to a great talent concealed by a low-quality exterior.
玉折 (the jade breaks) is about how "reaching beyond your means invites disaster," or the premature death of a brilliant individual. The first phrase is obviously about Gojo, while the second phrase describes Geto. (I referenced this reddit comment, which has further discussion on the nuances of 懐玉•玉折).
Another phrase involving jades that comes to mind: 双璧, which literally means twin jades, but can refer to a matchless pair, as in a pair of people who have no match except for each other. Before Gojo became enlightened, and before Geto crumbled, they were the strongest duo.

John Butcher & Eddie Prévost — Unearthed (Matchless)
Within improvised music, there are certain recordings that initiate timelines. One of them is John Coltrane’s Interstellar Space, which established the drums and saxophone duo as a creative situation worth exploring and documenting. The album’s name articulated the format’s appeal — maximum freedom. It provided a creative space within which the participants, freed of harmonic boundaries, were limited only by their techniques and imaginations.
Drummer / percussionist Eddie Prévost (born 1942) and soprano / tenor saxophonist John Butcher (born 1954) are members of different generations. A founding member of AMM, Prévost is part of English free improvisation’s first wave. Butcher came on the scene in the 1980s and first played with Prévost in the 1990s. They’ve had differing relationships to the format under consideration. While AMM functioned for several years as a drums / sax duo in the 1970s, Butcher steered mostly clear of drummers, as well as anything else that might push him towards a jazz-oriented way of playing, as he established his singular vocabulary of carefuly inflected, constantly non-obvious extensions of what one expects from a saxophone foror much of the 1980s and 1990s. However, they’ve developed an enduring partnership that spans several contexts, including the duo. Unearthed is their third such recording.
Unearthed is partly a creation of circumstance. The duo’s previous recordings were made in the greater London area, where Butcher lives and Prévost has often worked, and the latter employed a pared-down percussion set-up. But since it’s a bit harder for Prévost to get around these days, this recording took place in All Hallow’s Church in High Laver, Essex. The building was originally erected over 800 years ago, at which time repurposed Roman tiles and bricks were among the building materials. In addition to antiquity, it is distinguished by its active acoustic qualities. The bounce-back from old stone is not a problem for Butcher, who actively seeks to play in crypts, caverns, cisterns, and other lively acoustic situations, but an opportunity. He’s a master at incorporating the influences of echoes and absorbent surfaces into his improvisations. But while the space could easily turn an extroverted drummer’s playing into an undistinguished blare, a jazz drumkit is the instrument that Prévost has chosen to play. One of his accomplishments on this set is his deft management of the density of his playing and the clarity with which he’s been recorded. His drumming doesn’t blare, it sings, and the recording conveys both his playing and what the space does to it quite clearly.
Interstellar Space unveiled potentialities, stripping away limits to permit absolute freedom. But the human condition dictates that even if one can glimpse artistic liberty, absolute freedom is beyond anyone’s grasp. After all, Coltrane died just five months he and Rashied Ali played the session. And barriers aren’t all bad; they give a body something to push against. Prévost inhabits with the boundaries of time in several ways. He not only plays the drums with all the awareness of space, presence, and meter-transcending shape that he’s brought to AMM and so many other musical encounters; he plays them like a jazz drummer, drawing upon the brush technique, cymbal accents, metric subdivisions and syncopated pulses that a young fellow who came up playing bebop and skiffle in the 1950s learned by heart. One might say that he’s surveying his own timeline as a drummer, from back to front. There’s a moment in “Digging,” the second of the album’s long tracks, where he finishes an unaccompanied passage with a flourish that Gene Krupa would recognize as a solo-ending signal. Butcher responds with a lightly feathered, circular breathing-elongated gargle. Earlier in the same piece, he inserts echoing pops into Prévost’s spare perambulations about the snare and tom, focusing the kit’s output. The act is simultaneously contrary and completing, a reminder that one of the limits that this format shatters is the limit of one musician’s imagination.

Bandai Namco has released new information and screenshots for “Brain Punk” action RPG Scarlet Nexus introducing the game’s world, dual protagonists, and characters Arashi Spring, Shiden Ritter, Kyoka Eden, Kagero Donne, Naomi Randall, and Cullen Travers.
Get the details below.
■ World
Long ago, deranged mutants known as “Others” began to descend from the sky with a hunger for human brains. Humanity had no choice but to lead an enclosed life on the earth’s surface, but thanks to highly developed science and technology based on “psionics,” extra-sensory abilities that everyone has by nature, all things in world were connected by a large-scale network.
In this world where brain science has developed beyond convention, an army to oppose the Others known as the “Others Suppression Force” (OSF) was formed in New Himuka.
The OSF is an army of soldiers that possess exceptionally powerful abilities called “powers,” and are the only ones with the strength to annihilate the Others.
For the people, the members of the OSF are heroes, stars, and role models. This era was long-lasting, and the Others are now perceived as a natural phenomenon in the vein of thunderstorms and typhoons in that battles against the Others are an unfortunate occurrence that exist as an extension of everyday life.
The OSF will be joined by new recruits against this year. They, too, are forced to fight on the frontlines of the never-ending battle between humanity and the Others.
Experience a deep story of human connection from Bandai Namco Studios and the developers behind the Tales of series.
—New Himuka: A near-future world developed by psionics.
—The story of superpowered humans with particularly outstanding strength.
The Others
A threat to humanity that has existed since ancient times. Deranged mutants that descended from the sky with a hunger for human brains.
Others Suppression Force
A group of humans with powers formed to protect the people from the Others.
Their standout features are red cables and hoods. They are known as the “Scarlet Guardians.”
■ Dual Protagonists
Scarlet Nexus has two protagonists: Yuito Sumeragi, whose life was saved by a member of the OSF at a young age; and Kasane Randall, an elite scouted by the OSF who was always at the top of her class in training school. A dramatic story await players from the perspectives of two protagonists who have joined the OSF as new recruits.
Players will start the game by choosing one of the two protagonists. Which protagonist you choose is up to you. By playing as both protagonists, previously unseen truths behind certain events will come to light, such as conflicts between OSF soldiers and the “Red Strings” that hold the key to the story. The fate of the world is at hand.
■ Characters
Arashi Spring (voiced by Yui Horie)
“Being able to selfishly slack off whenever I want is something a grownup gets to do.”
Power: Hypervelocity
Service Record in the OSF: 29 Years
As the face of the OSF, she works as public relations and has enthusiastic fans of all ages and genders, but the hard working, cheerful, and sweet girl she plays on screen is only a persona for the camera. In truth, she is a sloth who is more enthusiastic about playing slacking off than she is working. Some of her teammates even tease her with the nickname “Lazy Ara” since as soon as the cameras go off, she loosens up and slacks off.
However, her true abilities are rumored to be on par with those of the “Septentrion,” and she is a also a gifted engineer. If she is motivated enough, her calmness and brilliant mind are extremely reliable assets. She is also the older sister of Fubuki Spring, the commander of the 1st Regiment of the OSF Arm. While she may seem younger than Fubuki at first glance due to the effects of anti-aging drugs, she is in fact the older one.
Shiden Ritter (voiced by Kengo Kawanishi)
“I don’t plan on being your friend.”
Power: Electrokinesis
Service Record in the OSF: 14 Years
A twisted and cruel OSF soldier with a sharp tongue. His high sense of pride, slight negativity, and highly strict nature tend to cause problems for his teammates. He did not get along with the commanding officer of his previous platoon and was reassigned to a new platoon where he teamed up Kasane. His ability in combat, however, is outstanding, and his results on the battlefield make up for his bad attitude.
He does not shy away from complimenting those stronger than himself, and both admires and longs to become as strong as the seven members of the “Septentrion.” Above all, he has particular respect for Seto Narukami, who possesses the same “Electrokinesis” power as him.
Kyoka Eden (voiced by Yumi Hara)
“We can’t just abandon people who need our help. Let’s do what we can.”
Power: Duplication
Service Record in the OSF: 29 Years
As an OSF member gifted with beauty and brains, Kyoka’s name is widely known. While she has many fans both inside and outside of the force, she herself does not seem very interested in her appearance. She is great at looking after her units and often oversees platoons as a result. She usually has a kind and gentle air about her, but becomes an entirely different and dauntless person in battle.
She considers the members of her unit to be like family, and shows a strong motherly side in that she is devoted to her comrades and subordinates to the point of nosiness. She loves things like jinxes, good-luck charms, and fortune-telling, and cannot help but try out each new one she discovers. She and Arashi graduated in the same class and know each other very well.
Kagero Donne (voiced by Daisuke Namikawa)
“Man, my invisibility power really saved the day!”
Power: Invisibility
Service Record in the OSF: 12 Years
A sociable, somewhat frivolous young man. He was scouted by the OSF after becoming an adult, which is much later than usual, and is commonly referred to as the “adult enlistment.” With his handsome appearance and silver tongue, he can get along with anyone and get himself out of any situation. According to himself, he is especially popular with women. The mood maker of the party, he is calm in a pinch and jokes around even in the direst times, but never seems faltered. He is an immigrant from Togetsu, a priest of their faith. However, he does not appear interested in their teachings anymore. His past is the only aspect of his life that he is secretive about.
Naomi Randall (voiced by Asuka Nishi)
“Kasane is the type of person who is easily misunderstood, so I would worry if I’m not by her side.”
Power: Precognition
Kasane’s kind and somewhat reserved adoptive older sister. As the eldest daughter of the wealthy Randall family, she grew up comfortably as a princess doted on by her parents. However, she is selfless, treats everyone equally, and possesses the integrity and strength to side with the weak and crush the strong. Although she is the same age as Kasane, she treats the adopted Kasane like a younger sister. She loves Kasane like a real sister and shows her affection from the bottom of her heart. She supports Kasane often, who tends to clash with others.
Cullen Travers (voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama)
“Don’t waste my time.”
Power: ???
The commander of the 2nd Regiment of the OSF Army, and the order of the 1st class of the “Septentrion.” Even among the OSF’s most remarkable, his abilities are particularly outstanding. Since he is untalkative, self-confident, and does not mince words, he is sometimes described as arrogant. However, his overwhelming charisma and strength are irresistible assets that many members of the OSF admire.
As Luka’s older brother, they have lived together as siblings without other relatives. He is also childhood friends with Fubuki, the commander of the 1st Regiment of the OSF Army, with whom he graduated in the same class. Together, the two are known as the matchless duo of the OSF.
Scarlet Nexus is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in summer 2021. Read more about the game here, here, here, and here. Read our in-depth preview here and watch the latest trailer here.

💬 Aurora heard a rumor that Tristan thought that she was childish and needed a babysitter
Send 💬 + a rumor and my muse will react to it.
“My dear, one side of the duo is occupied by an exceedingly deadly assassin who makes Murder, Inc look like a positively amateurish operation when contrasted against his talents while the other exhibits a dastardly warrior whose prowess on the battlefield painted the landscape scarlet red before his incorporation to the ranks of immortality. I assure you, I didn't assign them to you in order to impose early bedtimes nor to control the healthy habits of the blood you consume.” Tristan diplomatically reasoned with certainty.
“Instead of as an humiliation, it would be far more accurate to perceive them as proof of your exceptional value and matchless importance. A royal guard entrusted with the honor of keeping you safe and guarantying you don't require to bother with tedious, impersonal massacre on your own while we are navigating these dangerous waters. They constitute a temporal measure, I promise. One taken exclusively for the sake of your protection. And if we are to be blunt in our honestly, they are the ones at your service.”

Collaboration between snowboard manufacturer and brewery give birth to ONE Pilsner
Collaboration. It used to be synonymous with charities, family gatherings, and yes, even brewery releases. But now and again, a business in one segment of the community reaches out to another business, in a different segment, to collaborate. Today, businesses Triceratops Brewing and ONE Manufacturing are happy to join the ranks of those collaborating on something fun, a beer.
In historic Tumwater, the former home of Olympia Brewing Company, rests the gifted Triceratops Brewing. A baseball over the roof from another brewery, Matchless Brewing, Triceratops have been creating some waves with award-winning beers. Despite their relative inexperience, at less than 10 years old, the brewery has shown maturity with each of their releases.
Meanwhile, since 1986, ONE Manufacturing has become a trailblazer in the manufacturing of snowboards and snowboarding equipment in Belfair (Washington). Founded by Matt Cummins and Bryan Rushforth, the duo first met Triceratops co-owner Rob Horn, through a third-party, at the brothers’ Matt and Mike Cummins’ established business - Northwest Snowboards. A periodic sailor of the powder on his sled for one, Rob hit it off immediately with the duo.
“When we did our first winter waxing party [in 2018], they showed us support by donating snow wax so we wanted to do something for them,” says Horn. “Last year we made a hazy pale ale together, but Matt wanted a low ABV beer people could enjoy without getting hammered. We took the opportunity to really fine tune this Pils.”
Made with Salmon-Safe malt and hops, this Pilsner uses 2-Row barley from Mainstem Malt in Walla Walla, traditional hops - Citra and Monroe from Roy Farms - as well as an experimental hop. The result is a beer that is described as “crushable” with notes of spice, and floral, fruit. Either after a day or evening on the slopes, a hike away from home, or simply sitting in the backyard, ONE Pilsner is a rewarding sip at 4.3%.
It’s the one beer you’ll want in the cooler when your plan for the day is to shred, drink, repeat.
Oh and you better hurry, if you want to enjoy this unique collaboration between fan and enabler of snowboarding. Available at select retailers through Western Washington, in draft and 16-ounce four-packs, look for this wherever you find Triceratops beer. As always, this is available in 32-ounce crowlers and 64-ounce growlers at Triceratops Brewing’s taproom.
For more information on Triceratops Brewing visit the taproom at 8036 River Dr SE #203, in Tumwater, WA; or at https://bit.ly/2SG2J37
About Triceratops Brewing Company Founded by Rob and Kelly Horn in 2014, Triceratops Brewing Company evolved from a tiny one barrel garage system to a 10-barrel brewhouse and tasting room in the Tumwater Warehouse District near the Olympia Regional Airport. The company’s range of offerings include Stengel’s Gold Zwickelbier, Mrs. Voorhees Peanut Butter Stout, the award-winning Pennsyltucky Lager, Strawberry Golden Ale, and the popular Liquid Swords series of IPAs. Triceratops currently self distributes to King, Kitsap, Lewis, Pierce, Snohomish, and Thurston counties. Its tasting room is now open seven days a week. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/2SG2J37
About ONE Manufacturing ONE Manufacturing is an innovative lifestyle brand founded in 1986 by longtime professional snowboarder Matt Cummins and friend Bryan Rushforth. The first company to manufacture and sell snowboard wax, its products are tested at Mt. Baker and other Cascadian peaks by some of the best riders on the planet. In 2014 ONE Mfg. entered the biking world with a large offering of bike-specific products, all formulated and manufactured in Belfair. The goal is to create an innovative, functional line of snow, surf, and bike products and accessories that revolve around having fun and living life to the fullest. That post reminded me I was going to ask you about Russian literature! It’s an area of classic lit I’ve always wanted to get into but it seems kinda daunting 😅 I know you’re a big fan of Dostoevsky, is he a good place to start?
Oooh what a question! This is gonna get long, so I’ll leave it under the cut.
Okay so, Dostoevsky is just incredible, and I highly recommend reading his entire collected works, but although his pages abound with murder and intrigue, you’re gonna get a lot of women fainting and men not noticing because they’re too busy pondering their relationship with God and…themselves. That came as a bit of a disappointment to me the first time I read Crime & Punishment, like uhhh Fedya my good dude when are we gonna get to either the crime or the punishment. But Dostoevsky’s writing is, for me, utterly matchless. His turns of phrase are exquisite, his ability to describe That One Emotion You Have But Can’t Find A Name For is so uncanny. My favourite of his is The Brothers Karamazov, because it feels so rich and dark and melancholy; it’s a perfect autumn afternoon read, but if you’re feeling daunted then I’d recommend going with something a bit shorter like Notes From Underground or The Double.
I think (and this is potentially going to be an unpopular opinion but I stand by it) you don’t want to jump straight in with Tolstoy. Like, War & Peace is a wonderful novel, and definitely worth a read, but Russian lit is almost always drenched in historical context, and my man Tolstoy does not skimp. It’s absolutely not cheating to do some background reading on the Napoleonic Wars first. And history aside, Leo T does have a pretty heavy writing style. If you want to read Tolstoy, I’d personally recommend Anna Karenina above War & Peace (sorry Great Comet fandom) if only because it speaks to me more as a woman. Resurrection is also good, and a lot shorter, although it feels a lot more personal to Tolstoy with less historical scope.
One thing to consider is whether you’re reading something pre-Revolution or post-Revolution. Before the Revolution (and I’m kinda scooping all the revolutionary activity of the early 20th C into that too), you’ve got your classic lads like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, Pushkin, Turgenev sitting around writing about…whatever they wanted really?? And it’s all absolutely banging and not without historical importance, for sure, but obviously after the Revolution people had to be sneaky about what they wrote, because of censorship and, y’know, potential execution. There wasn’t time to publish them chapter by chapter in newspapers anymore, these bad boys had to be written on the sly and then yeeted out for immediate consumption (god that was a bad summary, I’m sorry Bulgakov). As such, they tend to be shorter and faster paced, so post-Revolution lit may be where you want to start if you’re worried about biting off more than you can chew.
The novels I love best from that time feel so important because they are themselves their own private revolutions. My personal favourite (my personal favourite ever) is Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master & Margarita. This one has it all: a fierce heroine, a giant talking cat, satire of Soviet society, a weird but valid Jesus fanfiction, the Devil himself, the cat wearing trousers, lots of ridiculous demons, the cat riding a tram, female solidarity, spooky witch party, the message that true creativity and freedom of expression can never be silenced, and did I mention there’s a cat?? Like, name a more iconic duo than feminism and witchcraft––I’m telling you, girls, this book will change your life. Bulgakov is also one of Daniel Radcliffe’s favourite authors, if that sweetens the pot for you.
Another fave is Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago. I feel like the term ‘bittersweet’ could have been invented solely to describe this book. Unlike many of its contemporaries, this novel is not so much a scathing review of revolutionary/Soviet politics as a tragic love letter to the things lost in the fire. There’s a real tenderness in Pasternak’s writing, and, I think, a valid attempt to examine the Revolution from both perspectives. Also I love Yury Zhivago, he’s a Soft Boy. (And I wouldn’t normally recommend a film adaption for a book rec question, but the 1965 adaption with Omar Sharif is just lovely. Also the 2002 miniseries with Keira Knightley!)
I actually haven’t read a ton of Chekhov (oh for shame) so I feel I’m not really qualified to talk about him, but I do enjoy the socialist themes of The Cherry Orchard. I mean, who doesn’t.
Anyway. I have no idea if any of that was helpful––I certainly hope it was, but nevertheless, I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to wax lyrical about Russian literature!
TL;DR: It’s all solemn and beautiful and I adore it and Dostoevsky is a solid 10. But go and read The Master & Margarita.
#this was super rushed i'm sorry if it's totally unhelpful#i feel like i didn't say half the things i meant to#russian literature

Listed: Vasco Trilla
If drummers are understood to be timekeepers, then it’s fair to ask what sort of math they’re doing. Jaki Liebezeit could be relied upon to find the square root of any musical problem; when in equal company, Elvin Jones had an exponential effect on the music’s rhythmic and emotional power. Vasco Trilla is equally adept at division and multiplication. The Barcelona-based percussionist, who performs in improvised, jazz, and rock situations all around Europe, often plays solo concerts and duo encounters that benefit from his ability to generate a multitude of contrasting, yet complimentary sounds. But he can also confine himself to the one decisive gesture that will pull a moment together. In a review of Trilla’s duo release with fellow percussionist Tim Daisey, Bristling Duets, Bill Meyer wrote that Trilla “introduces contrasting tones and complementary rhythms that turn brisk solos into elegant musical expressions of special experiences.”
Ellery Eskelin with Andrea Parkins & Jim Black — One Great Day (hatOLOGY)
youtube
I remember attending a concert of the trio at Lisbon’s Jazz em Agosto festival. It was at the city’s Hot Jazz Club, a cozy and small venue. I didn’t know much about them, and I was completely blown away, especially with Jim Black's drumming. I bought the album that night and listened to it compulsively for a long time.
Cynic — Focus (Roadrunner Records)
youtube
The band that changed the extreme metal scene, adding the sensibility and chops of a more jazz fusion-oriented band. Being a complete metalhead at the time, it was a revelation to hear that way of playing, and of course Sean Reinert’s drumming was out of this world. The band went on a long hiatus as the music was not really understood at the time.
Eric Dolphy — Out to Lunch! (Blue Note Records)
youtube
One of my all-time favorite albums. I still feel fascinated every time I play the album. Every track is packed with ideas, interesting twists, surprising melodies and every player is stellar. I can’t believe what Tony Williams played at that age… Crazy!
Eddie Prévost — Loci of Change (Sound and Sensibility) (Matchless)
youtube
Eddie Prévost’s solo albums are the real thing for me. It took me a bit to understand them, but I felt immediately hooked with his approach; textural, harsh and equally beautiful. Definitely a big influence on me. I strongly recommend his book No Sound Is Innocent, where he talks about improvised music. For me a must-read book.
King Crimson — THRAK (Virgin)
youtube
The album that made me discover the King Crimson legacy and amazing catalogue. I was, and still am, very fascinated by the progressive rock scene of the seventies. Bill Bruford is one of my all-time heroes!
Naked City — Radio (Tzadik)
youtube
A big turning point. It was my kind of entrance to the jazz world. Not the most conventional way to do it, but very rewarding! Since then, Zorn has been a big influence, Painkiller, Masada, etc. Always creative and on the edge of styles.
Gorguts — Obscura (Olympic Recordings)
youtube
A mastodonic, dissonant and weird death metal masterpiece. One of my all-time favorite metal albums. I love all their albums. The latest, Colored Sands and Pleiades Dust are truly breathtaking.
Edgard Varèse — The Complete Works (Decca)
youtube
Varèse’s music is very important to me. He highlighted percussion in ways never explored before. I Can’t count how many times I listened to “Ionisation!”
Frank Zappa — Roxy and Elsewhere (Discreet)
youtube
I could choose a different Zappa album every day. A fascinating album with a bit of every Zappa-esques that I love. I used to play in a Zappa cover band and “Echidna’s Arf /Don’t you ever wash that thing” was a real challenge to learn and play.
Krzysztof Penderecki — “Symphony No. 1”
youtube
I’ve been obsessed with this symphony. I find it really fascinating and menacing at the same time. The way he uses percussion in the opening had a big impact on my approach to solo percussion playing. Although I could cite any of Penderecki's early avant-garde sonoristic works, somehow this work got me hooked the most.

Interview with Cosmic Gate
We had the pleasure of interviewing Bossi of Cosmic Gate over Zoom audio!
GRAMMY ® nominated trance legends Cosmic Gate aka Nic Chagall and Bossi have proved to be a matchless musical union. The last 20 Years set them on the course to becoming Germany’s most enduringly successful electronic music duo. Smashing the biggest festivals and road-blocking clubs worldwide, got them highest climber on DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart and racked up plentiful other awards & nominations along the way. Numerous Singles like ‘am2pm’, ‘Fall Into You’ and ‘Falling Back’, countless Remixes and 9 Artist Albums, including scene-defining classics like ‘Be Your Sound’, ‘Fire Wire’ and ‘Exploration of Space’, their star on dance music’s walk of fame has long since been laid.
Introduction: From their very first drumbeat, through to the release of ‘[Forward Ever Backward Never]’ – their ‘20 Years’ commemorating longplayer, Cosmic Gate’s Nic Chagall and Bossi have proved to be a matchless musical union. A chance encounter in a Cologne recording studio two decades ago set them on the course to becoming Germany’s most enduringly successful electronic music duo.
Their original productions have taken them to the highest reaches of streaming lists and download charts, whilst their remixography eclectically includes everyone from revered Hollywood composers like James Horner (Avatar/Titanic) to in-scene demigods like Armin van Buuren and Tiësto. Nic & Bossi’s behind-decks-brotherhood has triggered critical mass in a now uncountable number of countries. They’ve dominated electronic music capitals and spun at the veritable A-through-Z of major festivals. In the process they’ve picked up a Grammy nomination (in 2019’s Best Remix category), become the highest climber on DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart and racked up numerous other awards & nominations along the way. Driven by their critically applauded albums, Spotify-busting singles like ‘am2pm’, ‘Fall Into You’ and ‘Falling Back’ (each with 5million streams to their name) and scene-defining classics like ‘Be Your Sound’, ‘Fire Wire’ and ‘Exploration of Space’ (10million Spotify streams), their star on dance music’s walk of fame has long since been laid.
As DJs, kinetically bouncing off the others energy, week in, week out, Cosmic Gate continue to push floors to supernova. In North America they’ve smashed the biggest festivals like EDC, Ultra, Electric Zoo, IleSoniq, Spring Awakening, Paradiso, Global Dance, Veld, Dreamstate and more. Road-blocking clubs and events like Space (both Miami & New York), Governors Island NY, LA’s Palladium and the Great Hall at Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner has become their SOP. Floors have felt similar pressure in hotspots worldwide. Among them have been Tomorrowlands in Belgium & Brazil, ASOTs internationally, Creamfields, Ministry & SW4 in the UK & Ultra Europe, Untold Romania, Mysteryland & Luminosity in Holland and Parookaville, Boothaus & Nature One in their native Germany. Their WMC/MMW Miami Sunset Cruises have long since passed into clubbing legend and the pair famously sold out a 2000 capacity solo show on the island of Honolulu.
Grammy nomination: the final month of 2018 Nic & Bossi were nominated for their first Grammy award. Selected in the Best Remixer category, their work on Gabriel & Dresden and Sub Teal’s ‘Only Road’ from a year earlier drew nomination praise from the academy. The remix was further described by DJ Mag as “masterful”, with “alchemic sequencing”, “shrewd use of context” and was “wily” in its “sound design”
C.G. Productions & Albums: In their homeland, Cosmic Gate has maintained a consistently high level of mainstream success, charting no fewer than 7 top 40 singles. Further afield ‘Fire Wire’ signalled the pair’s arrival, becoming a pan-European chart smash and hitting the top ten in a number of countries.
Albums have, and continue to play a substantial part in their production career. Most recently that’s been evidenced by ‘20 Years’, which was released in August of 2019.
Significantly subtitled ’[Forward Ever Backward Never’], it was conceived as an album that innovatively took their body of work to new floors and audiences. Including new Cosmic Gate productions, it also incorporated 2.0 renovations of CG anthems. Further, it featured reworks of tunes personally inspirational to CG, as well as new takes from other artists on classic Cosmic moments. Its first single releases brought a brace of Beatport hits with the MINT-playlisted ‘Come With Me’ and the “profound” (said DJ Mag) “9/10” ranked ‘Need To Be Loved’ both hitting the #1 position.
The album also gave rise to the 20 Years live tour, which to date has reached 30 cities globally. Of the tour’s LA stop, EDM.com said: “Los Angeles played host to one of their biggest shows on the tour where they performed at the legendary Hollywood Palladium. Their extended three-hour set included guest performances by JES, Eric Lumiere, and Emma Hewitt, who have lent their vocals to some of the duo’s biggest tracks”. The Dallas Observer meanwhile hailed their Stereo Live, Houston show as a “cruise through two decades of varied, quality productions.
’20 Years’ was preceded by the two ‘Chapters’ of the longplayer ‘Materia’ – the release of which musically bookended the group’s 2017. It was the album mothership for a clutch of new Cosmic Gate singles and releases. Among them were ‘Fall Into You’, ‘Edge Of Life’, ‘Noom’, the Beatport #1 ‘am2pm’, ‘AR’, ‘Dynamic’ (“melody and grit in equal proportions” said DJ Mag’s 8/10 review) and others. Following their ‘Start To Feel’ long-player (more info below), the release scored a MIXMAG Album of the Month plaudit, representing – said the magazine – an “impressive”, “roots-return” to their origin sound. Upon their release the ‘Materias’ were met with comparable sales success, hitting iTunes’ top 10s in 9 countries and reaching the #2 spot in both the United States and Canada.
The period 2015 – 2016 saw Cosmic Gate continue to embrace the collaboration medium through a number of high-profiles co-production projects. Among them was ‘Embargo’, which was the result of studio time shared with Armin van Buuren. The track was subsequently featured on the latter’s 2015 album, ‘Embrace’. A year later Nic & Bossi teamed up with Ferry Corsten to record ‘Event Horizon’. Garnering substantial praise from fans, DJs and press alike, it topped Beatport’s Trance chart in October of 2016.
Released in the summer of 2014, Cosmic Gate used their sixth album ‘Start To Feel’ to inspire fans to experience electronic music in a “deeper, wider, more complete way”. It’s first single – the Eric Lumiere-sung ‘Falling Back’ – was described as “9.5/10” scoring “anthem in a can” by the UK’s DJ Mag. Further singles including ‘So Get Up’, Yai (Here We Go Again’) and ‘Fair Game’ cemented its reputation. Upon release, the album hit the iTunes’ top 10 in the US, Canada, Germany and Russia. A MIXMAG 9/10 rated release, ‘Start To Feel’ was hailed as “audio chemistry and production physics in their most quantum forms”. It also catalyzed the Start To Feel bus tour, which famously saw Nic & Bossi perform 13 shows in just 16 days, coast-to-coast across North America, playing to over 20,000 fans.
In 2011 the duo released ‘Wake Your Mind’. It produced ‘Be Your Sound’ – a single that MIXMAG suggested: “finally unseats ‘Fire Wire’ as Cosmic Gate’s best-known-for track”. With its official video just off 16 million views on YouTube, it bagged an IDMA nomination in 2012, (with the JES-sung ‘Flying Blind’ following suit a year later).
Cosmic Gate’s album movements began with ‘Rythm & Drums’ (in 2001), ‘No More Sleep’ which followed a year later and ‘Earth Mover’ in ‘06. The latter was the album platform for the club hits ‘Analog Feel’, ‘Should Have Known’ and the IDMA-nominated ‘I Feel Wonderful’. ‘Sign of the Times’ arrived 3 years later, bringing the vocal anthem ‘Body of Conflict’, a further IDMA-nod for ‘Not Enough Time’ and spurred (a then near unheard of) 43-place leap up DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart. It also edged the pair towards a more open-plan electronic music style (later to fully manifest in ‘Wake Your Mind’ and ‘Start To Feel’).
Cosmic Gate’s Wake Your Mind marque was subsequently spun off into a number of other areas. WYM Radio is a comprehensively formatted show, which features Nic & Bossi discussing and airing their most highly rated tracks of the week. It’ll also encompasses first-listen music premieres and tunes from the deeper side of the CG psyche. The show – which is broadcast on Sirius XM, DI.FM and many other stations – also features comprehensive info on up-and-coming gigs, Nic & Bossi’s Big Bang track of the week and a host of other features, latterly including the ThrowBack weekly classic and their Private Playlist tune. In January of 2019, the show passed its landmark 250th episode.
Since 2013, Wake Your Mind Records has been the label base for all of Cosmic Gate’s releases. It’s also served as a dais for Cosmic Gate to sign and release music from other artists. Of late, tracks from producers like Maor Levi Greenhaven DJs and Steve Brian, as well as Nic Chagall’s own solo material have featured, alongside co-productions with Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Super8 & Tab and others. Latterly, the Wake Your Mind Sessions compilations have also come to play a part in the WYM make-up, with the third in the series reaching release in March of 2018.
Other remixes: Over their production lifetime, Cosmic Gate’s remixes have become almost as illustrious as their productions. In essence a blow-by-blow of A-list artists, Nic & Bossi have lent their studio know-how to releases by Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Deadmau5, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond’s OceanLab project, Markus Schulz, John O’Callaghan, Gareth Emery and Ferry Corsten. In early 2010 Atlantic Records US approached them to remix James Horner’s ‘I See You’ – the main theme from the film Avatar. This run culminated in Nic & Bossi being nominated for Best Remixer at the 2010 IDMAs and not to forget their Grammy nominated remix for „Gabriel & Dresden – The Only Road“ in 2019 (see paragraph “Grammy Nomination” above for more infos)
