These panels from Incredible Hulk #176 contain maybe the only rack focus match cut in comics.
Books like Watchmen famously use match cuts between panels brilliantly, but I've never seen a comic use an out of focus middle panel to simulate the transition.

Mike Flanagan shows are full of match cuts and clever item-or-person-to-similarly-framed-thing edits. This from The Haunting of Bly Manor 1.02 “The Pupil” is one of my favourites, not just for its unusual cheeky match cut, but how that cut draws attention to the doors which lead to a chilling moment 15 seconds later.
The fridge and basement doors open at the same time (0:11) as we're suddenly plunged into darkness (the opposite of what one expects as doors open!) from the bright kitchen. The darkness is half-erased as Dani opens the door, so we see we're in the basement.
Tumblr media
Dani stands at the stairs for a few moments as the light switch fails to work; a cut to Dani's POV for a moment and hoooold on the creepiness . . .
Tumblr media
before Owen speaking J-cuts us back to the kitchen, with not only no sign of Dani but *the door is closed,* which attention is drawn to by Owen's OJ carafe.

Anyways I post one lil shot analysis like this per day on insta, twitter, and facebook, as well as couple longer posts and videos weekly on YouTube and Substack. All those links are handily available for you on our sexy and minimalist website. (We tried for tumblr but turns out the back end kiiiinda hates our whole thing and we got deleted right quick, le sigh)
The full breakdown of Bly Manor is on our substack today, so I'll just shamelessly drop that one last link and bounce.

Hi hi!!
I've always been impressed and amazed by your art, the way you use shapes is really communicative and I just love how gogeous it looks
I was wondering if maybe you could share a bit on how you draw ? Because you're genuinely an inspiration for me and I'd love to see the behind the scene if it makes sense
Thank you for posting your art it's always a pleasure to see c:
have a nice day/night and don't forget to drink water!!
I actually made something akin to this a while back but got shy/paranoid about it, so maybe here is an alright time to share at least a part of it :)

The best way I can think of is it that with digital art I dont really think about things in terms of mixing paints but more like a paper doll or paper cut art- some pieces you want to look stuck together and others you want to look glued to the back, but also maybe you reuse the same piece of paper a lot. It's not 100% how I'm going about things, but the mindset is close enough. I like when things look clean and connected or have a sense of flow to them, so a lot of colors will flow into a different part in a line. Everything is very heavy on the layers, which means in any given piece i can probably pull the whole thing apart and change bits and pieces individually. This is what the average WIP looks like:
Tumblr media
You'll notice theres a lot of smooth continuous lines and "meeting points" for curves. Even if i drew them at different points, I usually make them lead into each other on purpose. It's not really complicated, but also my methods are the probably extremely weird and nonsensical because something about digital art stops me from being able to process how things should work. It's very different from traditional for me.

The first episode of Blue Eye Samurai "Hammersmith" uses framing, blocking, edit, and depth of field to "Show Don't Tell" how important hair is, personally and culturally.
First, Mizu is framed wide approaching the river, so we know (and we know she knows) she's alone, before she uncovers her head, and lets her hair down.
Mizu's hair coming down 'match cuts' to Princess Akemi's hair (also down, and in the same place in frame) as she brushes it.
Tumblr media
Akemi's scene continues to be about hair, here tied somewhat closer to aesthetics and beauty. As Akemi examines her reflection, we see her in the mirror, while close to camera her hair takes up fully half of frame.
Akemi compares herself to a drawing, bits of which we see in extreme closeup. She pulls her hair up and smiles . . . then drops it with a sigh.
Tumblr media
As Akimi's smile and hair both fall, cut to Taigen - whom we last saw on the ground as Mizu's sword whooshed towards him.
Between Taigen and the camera, fully in focus while Taigen is soft, lies a knot of hair.
Tumblr media
Taigen reaches and grabs it as he sits up, focus shifting to his head and making it clearer that the pale circle we saw is his scalp - because Mizu cut his topknot off!
As Taigen turns, showing his bald spot again, focus racks to the three men who turn their backs and walk away, demonstrating he is dishonoured because of losing his fight and his hair.
Tumblr media
By featuring hair in different ways, centring and (literally) focusing on it in three different context, Blue Eye Samurai doesn't need any dialogue in these scenes to *clearly* tell us about the importance of hair in this world.

"When I was little, I really liked everyone, all people. I loved everyone around me. Everyone I met became my friend, and if I were like that in the past, now I feel a bit more [that] I think about the circumstances and the situations when I meet new people. I guess you can say I've matured. I have moments where I feel pure and uplifted like a child, and sometimes, I feel more mature, without forcing to make that happen. I feel like that dichotomy of emotions exists in me." - Jaehyun, "Journey of 'J': Jeong Yuno"
