Hello! SoI've failed to keep up with Hakoniwalily's trio lol. I remembered until the third MV where it's revealed that the two guys are in the same dorm, and life's been busy, and tons of other HW things dropped, so I didn't keep up much after XD. What happened after the third MV, and the names?? Also, how connected is it with that other story with the childhood friends where the guy has a Yuri sister? I missed a ton😭
hi!! i’m not 100000% sure about the comprehensive deets of the masaki trio, but i’ll try my best to summarise their latest updates!!
Tumblr media
~cut here in case it gets too long lol~
so!!! after the masaki mv (the one where it was revealed that the two guys went on to become roommates in uni), touka hosted a stream with hakolily to decide on names for the 3, and the end results were as follows:
Tumblr media
(from left to right in the image below): kisaragi masumi, wakaba saki, minato kyouya. take the first syllables of each of their first names, and you get masaki!! …which makes their little group name pretty self-explanatory.
Tumblr media
their most recent mv seems to be a flashback though, since they’re seen to be in their first year of high school
Tumblr media
even though they had graduated in their very first mv appearance
Tumblr media
as for their connection to the other series (m academy) featuring the little sister (saejima maki) of the childhood friends couple in kirakira, they’re just schoolmates lol. possibly even classmates, though that has not been definitively confirmed yet, since the masaki trio get background cameos at best in the m academy mvs released thus far
Tumblr media
and that’s (probably) all we know about the masaki trio for now~~~ here’s to hoping for more content of them in the touka cinematic mv universe~~~~~~~~

So- my first reaction to this panel was just, "I recognize that car!" Old Fiat 500s are one of the few cars I can reliably recognize because my dad is absolutely obsessed with them. (Modern cars are a blur to me- they all look alike and I don't even know the car brand logos.) It took a moment to sink in how an iconically Italian car would be significant to Isabella. Without some very specific cultural knowledge, this would just be a quirky-looking car- but, basically by coincidence, I understand how it's a thoughtful visual reference.
But it gets better! I texted this photo to my dad, along with some plot context, and he told me it makes sense that a Fiat 500 imported to Japan pre-1989 would be yellow. There's an anime/manga franchise called Lupin III where the protagonist frequently drives a yellow Fiat, starting in 1979 with the Hayao Miyazaki-directed movie The Castle of Cagliostro. Dad's take is that this would have been a particularly popular car model and color for Japanese people to import, because it's a pop-cultural icon there, and so it would be a relatively easy artifact of Italy for Masumi to find and buy.
...and without knowing the exact right person (dad being a Miyazaki fan as well as a classic Fiat fan) I would have no idea of any of this. It makes me wonder- for every little brilliant detail I find out about, how much am I missing?

Detco movies rated based on how much shit gets exploded / destroyed
The Time-Bombed Skyscraper - the whole premise is about blowing up stuff, but it's shame no trains got got, 7/10
The Fourteenth Target - it's just an underwater restaurant that is pretty out of the way from anything else and we have no prior attachment to. bonus for the helicopter crash, 5/10
The Last Wizard of the Century - an entire castle does get burned down, but it's no explosion, 6/10
Captured in Her Eyes - just some regular old murder, 0/10
Countdown to Heaven - truly a 9/11 movie. point detracted for leaving the second tower intact, 8/10
The Phantom of Baker Street - the entire thing takes place in VR, so it shouldn't even count, but no one even gets their brain blown up :( 0/10
Crossroad in the Ancient Capital - somehow nothing gets bombed or destroyed? Conan tries a little arson but is unsuccessful, -1/10
Magician of the Silver Sky - a plane gets somewhat mistreated, 2/10
Strategy Above the Depths - a whole damn ship sinks, it's all very dramatic, 9/10
The Private Eyes' Requiem - despite the constant threat of exploding people, barely anything gets exploded. half a point for Kid using a gun on some windows, 1.5/10
Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure - i guess they do find that ancient pirate ship and it immediately falls apart, 5/10
Full Score of Fear - plenty of shit gets blown up including a concert hall while no one inside realizes anything's wrong. you'd think they'd have some fire warning system in place, 10/10
The Raven Chaser - sadly no explosions, but the tower gets shot at hard, and the helicopter does not end up fine, tho no actual crash on screen, 5/10
The Lost Ship in the Sky - only a research facility we don't care about gets exploded in the opening, and that airship barely gets scratched up, 4/10
Quarter of Silence - we have a train exploding out of a tunnel, a dam blown to smithereens, and an avalanche, what more could you want, 10/10
The Eleventh Striker - who can say no to some exploding stadiums, great movie for people who hate football, 8/10
Private Eye in the Distant Sea - just a rando ship at the beginning, who cares, 1/10
Dimensional Sniper - some police cars and incredibly light bombing of the tower, eh, 3/10
Sunflowers of Inferno - a cool museum gets absolutely demolished, the burning fake sunflowers are a lovely image, plus we got some proper plane mistreatment, 10/10
The Darkest Nightmare - both an explosive car crash at the beginning and a ferris wheel gets extremely destroyed, 9/10
The Crimson Love Letter - lots of explosions, and in beautiful scenery too, 10/10
Zero the Enforcer - destroying shit with a satellite is pretty imaginative, but there was not as much destruction as i hoped, 7/10
The Fist of Blue Sapphire - they're surfing on some iconic Singaporean landmarks, meanwhile an oil ship freely wrecks shit, 11/10
The Scarlet Bullet - i fully admit i have no idea what Masumi and Conan were trying to do, both the train and station ended up looking pretty rough. 10/10
The Bride of Halloween - for a movie about bombs not all that much significant shit gets destroyed, but they do go out in style at least. bonus points for covering Shibuya in goo, 9/10

[A3!] Event | Special Edition: Back to the 00’s | Episode 1
Tumblr media
Tenma: I like the stores we usually go to, but sometimes it’s nice to go shopping in fashion buildings like this.
Tenma: With the surprisingly good haul we got, it was definitely worth the trip. Thanks for coming along with me.
Sakuya: No, thank you for picking out clothes with me! It’s thanks to you that I was able to make such good purchases, Tenma-kun.
Tenma: Well, I AM pretty good at picking things out. If there’s anything else you want, just let me—.
Tenma: Hm? This poster…
Sakuya: “Notice of Closure”...? Huh!? The building is closing…
Tenma: Seems like it… I didn’t know that. This is such a well-established fashion building.
Tumblr media
Sakuya: It’s kinda sad. This is one of Veludo Town’s famous spots.
Tenma: Yeah. It’s always felt like such an iconic place.
Tenma: …Well, in the meantime, why don’t we go and take a break at a café somewhere?
Sakuya: Yeah, let’s do that.
???: …
*Something falls to the ground as the person walks away*
Sakuya: ? It seems like something fell off of that person’s bag just now.
Sakuya: Excuse me! I think you dropped this—.
Towa: T-Thank you so much—!
Sakuya: Huh… Towa-kun?
Tumblr media
Towa: S-Sakuya-san!?
Towa: And Tenma-kun…!? Ahhhh, I never thought I’d run into you here!
Sakuya: Ahaha, this is starting to feel kind of familiar.
Tenma: We sure do run into you a lot… Do you come here often too?
Towa: Yeah! I sometimes come here to take photo sticker booth pictures! They’ve got a huge photo sticker booth space in this building.
Towa’s Friend A: Towa, c’mon~.
Towa: Coming!
Towa: Ah! And I’m really glad you picked this up for me! Thank you so much!
Sakuya: You’re welcome. I didn’t realize when I picked it up, but that’s a case with one of Masumi-kun’s bromides in it, isn’t it?
Towa: It is! I mean, I would’ve been sad if I lost Masumi-kun’s bromide, but I would’ve been actually sobbing if I lost the hard case I worked so hard on yesterday…!
Sakuya: You made it!? That’s incredible!
Tenma: That reminds me, Yuki made something like that for Misumi.
Towa’s Friend B: Towaaa! We’re going to leave without you!
Towa: I-I’m coming right now!
Towa: Well, I’d really like to stay and talk more, but I’ve gotta go. I can’t wait to see your next performance!
*Towa runs off*
Tenma: …That guy really never changes. He was just as much of a disaster as he usually is.

Sakuya: Ahaha…

BEST YGO GIRL: FINAL ROUND
Tumblr media
please use this as an opportunity to say why you like a character, not why you don't.
Propaganda under the cut!
Isis Ishtar
gorgeous, very caring sister, strong duelist, and the only woman to ever make Seto Kaiba squirm
anyways. not only as mentioned above is she the first woman to make kaiba squirm, but she was by all means going to beat him if not for the millennium rod's millennium interference. yami marik admits that she's a strong duelist with a strategy that's been working for literal years-- and given that she's not like, a professional duelist, thats pretty impressive
she also recently got some really cool meta bumps and let me point out that an "ishizu deck" now includes obelisk the tormentor-- which we knew she had prior to giving it to kaiba, but i think it only solidifies my opinion that she very much could wield an Egyptian God Card, an exclusive little club for top tier duelists
as a character she presents herself with an amazing amount of poise and grace, shes compassionate and kind and stays with mai and serenity even though she only just met them. shes struggling through living the past 5 years of her life drowning in guilt for her family's tragedy just because she wanted to make her little brother happy and shadi is a fucking liar. shes foretold her own death and marches towards it grimly but with so much love in her heart. and even then shes 20 years old and holds an important position in the egyptian government that typically requires a doctorate degree AND has been dealing with mariks off-and-on bullshit entirely by her lonesome. she also likes to flex her fortunetelling a little which is awesome i think she should do that more that scene where she tells the guy exactly how the stele is being transported was so everything
speaking of shes got such an attitude. "is it your destiny to waste my time?" iconic. never seen before will never be seen again. watch the duel between her va and joeys its so fucking funny
shes excult. shes doesnt flinch in the face of god nor death. seto kaiba and yami marik respect her. shes so sad and so sweet and battle city couldnt have happened without her.
also her parallels with kaiba are what motivate kaiba to give yugi the card he needed to beat marik.
kaiba, in duelist kingdom, was ready to jump off a ledge if yugi didnt let him through to face pegasus while trying to save mokuba out of sheer desperation to save his little brother. he KNOWS what that dedication feels like and the iron kind of will you need to have to make that kind of gamble. isis is being so fucking legit with what shes saying and he respects that and her judgement enough to change his mind and not only watch the duel, but give yugi a card that eventually helps him win, even if he has no real confidence in the odds. but theres a CHANCE, which is the same thing he taught her when he beat her in a duel. the layers its her faith that moves him to act. which is so crazy
anyway vote isis shes my best friend forever and a real rep for all the 20 year olds who honest to god did not sign up for this bullshit
Yuzu Hiragi
The entire show would not work if the cast wasn't obsessed with her, and they're all right to stan her, literally gets Sora and Serena to defect from Academia with her sheer charisma, beat Masumi at their gay little rivalry, Yugo spends a few days with her and is ready to die for her, Yuya is simply just the loudest about adoring her And why not? She is so clever and determined, doing the most work out of anyone to figure out the myth plot. Actively trains to keep up with the rest of cast. Even when the universe is conspiring against her and trying to keep her down, she fucking headbutts Roger and tells him off or manifests to help save the world in the ultimate girlboss team-up that was the Arc V finale. Truly any dimension without her is worth upending.
The mysterious magical bracelet that isekai's her to different worlds, the Can-Do attitude, the cool poses (fusion summoning), the ADORABLE character design, AND she was 1/4 of a world-saving hero in the past?? If it weren't for the meddling writers, she would have been the main character
yuzu is everything. literally the plot of arc v hinges on the fact everyone who meets her become just as obsessed with her. and they are totally right to do so

Okay, listen– Listen! Seeing videos like this I can’t dislike Ran, she’s a strong and powerful female character. She’s badass and she’s iconic and an inspiration for little girls. (Not kidding.)
She can fight, she powers through, she can knock down guys like houses of cards. She is a certified badass woman and inspiring both due to her femininity combined with her martial arts proficiency. Because she is feminine and still wipes the floor with your average criminal.
She is whiny at times, pining for “her” Shinichi but that’s fine, I can handle a whiny main girl and strong lead woman character if they are one and the same.
I am not much of a fan of her pining and her getting whiny/ crying for Shinichi every chance she gets. Still, I respect her as a strong female character.
However, towards the end of the video… those are the scenes why I – personally – consider ShinRan to be toxic and borderline abusive.
I had originally posted this in a reblog on my KID movie poll but finding this video gave me an incentive to make it its own post.
Aside from this video, one example is the after-credit of movie 3 with Ran straight-up threatening to physically abuse Shinichi. Like, folks, that’s my main reason I dislike her.
Ran started out as a strong female character, which is awesome, but over the years she descended to 1) “Save us, Shinichi!~” and 2) physically abusive
I get that she’s whiny at times and while I generally dislike whiny characters (see Martin from TMA), I can handle that
I can handle the Main Girl(tm) being whiny and pining for Shinichi
But that drive to keep her a strong female character who needs no man lead to her being increasingly physically abusive. She cries and pines, fine.
But then Shinichi does show up and what does Ran do? Either first thing, she hits him for being away for so long. Or she slaps/ hits him when he tells her he has to go back to his case and can’t stay. I understand her upset, I understand her pining.
Nobody has a right to vent their upset through physical abuse, though.
But a girl who can knock down a lamp-post, who can kick a man trough a window, ESPECIALLY has no right to raise her hand against her love-interest!
That’s one of the first things every martial art ever teaches you, do not resort to violence if there is even a sliver of another safe option.
I get that Kogoro knocking Conan about was played for shits and giggles, it’s a thing of that time when the manga/ anime started out. And accordingly Ran venting her upset through physical violence also was a product of that time and result of portraying her as the strong/ physically tough lead girl.
But she is his love interest for crying out loud and among many other scenes the after-credit of movie 3 emphasises that Shinichi is scared of her hitting him as soon as he gets back.
That’s not funny!
Physical abuse is not funny. And a strong female character directing physical abuse at her no-show love interest doesn’t make it funny.
My main ship always has been and always will be KaiShin. But I also know that would never become canon because DCMK doesn’t do queer. It’s “kid-friendly”, it can’t do queer.
But for goodness’ sake do I wish – desperately wish – the Main Couple became MasuShin instead. Masumi is on-par with him, she’s quick-witted, she’s silly, I love her queer vibes, and she understands/ encourages Shinichi every step of the way.
That’s another thing! Ran despises Shinichi’s work. It’s a common motive in fanfic (hence played up) that she forbids him from taking cases. But her dislike for his work – his passion his calling – is there.
I just can’t see ShinRan be healthy. And that opinion hasn’t changed in the 14 years I have been watching Detective Conan.
Edited to add:
I also want to clarify that I am not basing my opinion off the movies (alone), in fact, any DCMK movie outside the KID movies, movie 3 specifically, and movie 18 onwards, I haven’t watched in years. I am referencing movie 3 specifically because I recently watched it but this behaviour certainly is in the anime/ manga/ canon as well. The London Arc, that restaurant date in a skyscraper where he stood her up and Conan had to apologise (which also got used for an opening/ ending), the early episodes where Shinichi makes a comeback, the “Murder Suspect: Kudo Shinichi” Arc where he hides from Ran, and that’s just off the top of my head because I was on a fandom-hiatus for around 2 years and don’t care enough for ShinRan to rewatch these things.
I’m so sorry (sarcasm) that I didn’t provide receipts for my critique of Ran. But I’m also not about to go through the series for the entire purpose of making an itemised list of Ran abusing/ hitting Shinichi. If I do a rewatch from the early episodes on, I might keep a notepad handy and jot down the instances of Ran smacking Shinichi but don’t hold your breath because I tend to avoid the romance-heavy episodes in general, no matter the pair.

-The bit about her mostly playing male roles is based on myself, because the amount of guys I’ve played waaaay outnumbers the women despite being the girliest mf on the planet.
-She was a part of the Hanasaki High drama and dance clubs before she joined Mankai, and has been performing from a young age :)
-As for dance experience, she has the most in ballet and ballroom, but has done stints in modern, hip-hop, and contemporary!
-Her mother’s family is from the U.S., though she was born and raised in Japan, hence the first/last name disconnect

Can Heavy yell louder than Masumi? Does it matter?
(This is for @jkjones21, in a way- he asked me to write about a certain page of The Power Fantasy and I'm taking it in a completely different direction than he suggested to me. He did have a good observation about the power lines and cicada as iconic anime/manga motifs, but I don't actually have anything to add to what he said.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, so from a certain perspective, you could say these two images are proof that Heavy can yell louder than Masumi, because of the way font size works in comics. I think that's an overly reductive point of view, but I want to start with it because it's a simpler version of what I actually feel like is going on, so here goes.
In the third panel of the first image, we see Masumi from so far away that she's barely visible, and her dialogue font is small to show that we can barely hear her. Then in the fourth panel, we see her closer up, and the big font size (coupled with her angry posture) make it clear that she's actually yelling at the top of her lungs, she was just too far away to clearly hear before.
By comparison, in the third panel of the second image, we see Haven (an entire city) from far enough away that Heavy isn't even visible from where he's standing on one of its balconies- but despite the distance, his dialogue font is still really big. If you can clearly hear Heavy yelling from far away, but Masumi's voice gets muted with distance, he's louder, right?
Except nothing in comics is real. You're not visually representing a world that consistently exists, you're representing a story that shifts in emotional meaning. The aesthetic effect of Masumi's voice there (at least, its effect on me) is that for all her emotional ferocity, she's just a small angry blip in an overall peaceful world. In the context of the story, her taking the human-scale perspective of "How could you murder hundreds of people?" is immature compared to Etienne's cynical pragmatism. And the visuals back this up by deflating her anger through making her look small.
And then Heavy... I don't want to say "he's louder because you're supposed to take his anger more seriously," because that's not quite true. This is an out-of-context excerpt as of today (five more days until issue #6!!!!) but I get the sense it's being played for comedy. Heavy's louder than a person that far away has any right to be, because the force of his anger is hyperbolic.
...it's not really about who's literally more loud. It's not even about who's more angry (not that you can measure anger on a scale, even.) It's about how the reader is supposed to interpret each character's anger- and the weird thing is, Masumi's small-font anger and Heavy's large-font anger are both coded as ineffectual. She's not as loud as she seems to think she is, and he's so loud it becomes melodramatic and funny. They've both got very real things to yell about, and I'm sure they take themselves seriously... but the narrative is undercutting both of them, for effect. (Again though- I'm interpreting the second image out of context! Or I guess you could say, the second image's caption is offering a different context from when I'll actually see the whole issue.)
Oh, and my headcanon? Heavy can yell louder in terms of literal decibels, but Masumi has an ear-piercing scream that's like a zillion times more alarming.
