I'll join Mastodon when I'm ready folks. I'd give people money to leave me alone about it right now. I do not have the mental capacity to deal with it and I don't need to be reminded it exists every single time I complain about Twitter. I also don't have the energy to explain to you how my Fandoms anchor my sanity and keep me alive. I know it doesn't make sense but fuck it.

I got up today, it's a very nice day, the first nice saturday in a long time. I did some errands while jamming that new Chat Pile jawn which is VERY VERY VERY GOOD. Oh yes.

I came home, I ate some breakfast, I looked at a notification on the tumblr app, and found some things in my inbox from this past week.

The numbers aren't in chronological order, but Ive been searching for them the longest. They are on some of the first tapes I recorded of the many collected full of these gems. 19, 58 and 105, literal obsessions.

A TWITTER REFUGEE'S GUIDE TO MASTODON

OK So...What's Mastodon?

So imagine if Twitter and Email had a baby...no NO RULE 34 ARTISTS PUT DOWN YOUR FUCKING PENS!!!

Mastodon is not a single site, but a load of separate sites called "instances" that can talk to other instances meaning that you can be on one instance and follow people on another. This has a lot of advantages like you know...a single man not being able to buy the whole system up and ruin it like a certain South African Trust Fund Kid.

Instances?

So Mastdon is what is known as a Federated service, meaning that rather than being a single site (like twitter) it's a whole collection of separate sites that can talk to each other (like email) called instances. Someone on one instance can follow someone else on another instance by typing their full mastodon handle into the search bar (@[username]@[domain].[TLD]). For example, my full Mastodon handle is @abbiistabbii@mastdon.scot.

What this means is that you can find an instance that fits you, there are instances that location based (like the one I use) or LGBT based, tech based, art based or even just general use ones. Mastodon has a server directory if you are a little confused.

You're not trapped on a little island, you can follow other users from other mastodon instances easily and even view the firehose in the "federated" tab.

OK, and what are the main advantages of this "federated Service" you speak of?

If the Mods or the Admin act like arseholes you can simply migrate to another Instance.

Because everyone gravitates to an instance that matches their interests, it's usually a lot more chill. You're a lot less likely to encounter a Terf and a Terf is a lot less likely to run into you if you are on separate instances, they have to seek you out rather than just run into you and start trying to fight you.

It's easier to see things that are more relevant to your interests while at the same time being able to seek out users you want to follow from outside the instance.

So what happens when an instance starts going rouge with trolls and arseholes?

Instances can block entire instances by doing what is known as "Defederation", basically cutting off a server from their instance, so don't worry, if 4chan starts a mastodon, they can be blocked.

Can...can I start my own personal Mastodon?

Sure! If you can get the server space and have the technical knowhow, you can!

Any other features I should know about?

Large Character Limits (my instance is at 500 characters).

it's Open Source!

Instances have their own custom emojis (yes, you heard).

Lotsa app options (I use Tusky for Mastodon).

日の入りが少しずつ遅くなっています。

春に一歩一歩近づいています。

Mastdon、Fedibirdでアカウントつくったんだけど、Mastodonのタイムラインが少しずつつい最近のTwitterに近づきつつある。Tumblrに引きこもろうかと思案中。

Bluesky demonstrate that some people really liked the Twitter-like format and strongly dislikes Mastdon.

I think a Twitter-like system that is fediverse compatible could be very popular. Just let people follow outside said sevice but otherwise keep it super simple.

Maybe Threads will do this?

This can be positive, negative, ambivalent; about fandom as a whole, your own fandom(s), or your own plans. Alternately, what do you hope fandom will do? Imagine a best-cast scenario, and tell us what that would look like.

Optimistic. People will continue to be able to share their fan fiction, fan art, fan metas, etc in a way that that others will find an appreciate them.

More specifically for the Daria fandom; the PPMB may be slowly dying, but the Lawndale High board continues to be active.

Similarly for Star Trek; the TrebBBS has a similar level of activity to 'back to in the day', that being while Enterprise was still new on the air. (And elements of fandom being against something 'violating canon/continuity' sound the same whether they're talking about Enterprise, the Kelvin Timeline Movies, or Discovery.)

Twitter may fail or change into something unusable, but another space may be found. (Haven't joined Mastdon yet. Would anyone recommend it?)

The same applies to Tumblr. (But the way I use it hasn't changed much.)

if tumblr joing the  Fediverse means what I think it means, its good news for alot of people, god people can run there own tumblr instance like they can on mastdon. i know matt has confirmed he wants tumblr to be open source. its going to be good.

to simplfy it, you can basically run your own tumblr WEBSITE not just blogs
