Born on this day 110 years ago: ultra-kitsch Russian-born mass market artist Vladimir Tretchikoff (26 December 1913 – 26 August 2006), whose vibrant “exotic” paintings like “Chinese Girl” (aka “The Green Lady”, one of the top-selling prints of the twentieth century), “Miss Wong” (pictured) and “Balinese Girl” ensure his position in the same elite “low brow art” pantheon as Margaret Keane and J H Lynch. Is any home complete without a framed Tretchikoff print above the mantelpiece (or better yet, bamboo cocktail bar)?

#thinking about raupi kaur hollie mcnish and the movment of populist poetry #how all media is populist right now and it’s no surprise its happening in a time of economic uncertainty AND a devaluation of art in society #not to mention a rise in anti intellectualism #thinking about how fanfiction is no longer a practice for writing but more an opportunity to get likes and reblogs #every day I see posts about how authors feel pressured to write for a specific character because all others are ignored #to you I say the mass market appeal is NOT worth you writing something you don’t care about #your audience of 20 will be more endeared to you BECAUSE you are feeding their niche #thinking about the inherent dichotomy between art and money because once you create for the common denominator you lose something #look at marvel movies - hell the state of movies in general: ZERO intellectual curiosity #everything is made to be consumed by the most amount of people #and it SUCKS ITS FUCKING GARBAGE #art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable #if everyone finds your work palatable then it’s not art it’s content to consume #RANT OVER #… or for the next 20 minutes until I get another thing to Think About

#i want to kiss a butch for 3 hours. also i'm the only one in the world with correct opinions about everything #me the main character of life #anyway i saw this post complaining about sanitized mass marketable queer art #where the person described themselves based on the interests i guess they thought were most stereotypical and then were like #isn't there something rawer or more real than this #to which i would say there is! but you went to the queer market day #idk it is a frustration of mine too i do get it #but i think some people could stand to just get weirder and like the things they like #idk i buy cute little queer stickers all the time but i regularly stand out as a strange person in both queer and straight communities #get a friend who worked the same shit job who will sell you abstract alien art they made while they were high it's not hard #go to goodwill more. you'll find some raw expressions of humanity.#if you just want your interests to be more genuine to you it's simple #you just have to accept that maybe 2 other people will be able to rec you music or foods you enjoy #being more specific isn't everything it's cracked up to be sometimes #i think the problem here is mainly capitalism

It’s 5 in the morning I should be asleep but I’m trying to decide which editions of stormlight archive to get

#I have been aggressively bitching about trade paperbacks for a long time #particularly in the last few days because the one I’m reading is AWKWARD #normally I am a b size bitch #but they split them into halves and I don’t want that #so I was like well mass market it is #but there’s illustrations in them #which I would like to be able to see properly #so do I want the hardcovers??#not for 65 fucking dollars a book I don’t Jesus Christ #and they will also be awkward and heavy to actually read #in a perfect world I would be able to buy b size with the tor cover art with nothing split into parts #or at least be able to go to a bookshop and flick through the mass market and see if the illustrations are small and tucked into the spine #but no one has them physically #it’s not even like I’m getting them now I was always gonna wait until book five so this is dumb and I should go to bed #if you have the mass markets tho lemme know about the illustrations lmao #stormlight archive #brandon sanderson
