Planning my longfic here, and you know what Mass Effect really needs? Older women who are not mothers or mother figures.
Older women being messy, angry, in love, terribly romantic, sad, jealous, soft.
I need old women yuri in my mass effect, and I need it NOW. (might give Karin Chackwas a gf)

Hands off the disability aids
(Ken Donnelly has a cane in Sunset and Evenign Star, after getting caught in an IED on Omega in aStSHB)
"Chief, Commander." The Specialist Jones nodded politely as he put his tray down on the mess table, stepping over the bench. His foot hit something that rattled, and he reached under the table,
"It's in the way, I was just going to move it over here."
Donnelly looked over at Shepard without taking his hand off the cane. "Permission to shoot him if he touches my cane again, ma'am?"
She looked away from her conversation with the XO, face bland. "What was your last firing range score?"
Donnelly blushed. "It's, er, been a while."
"Then no."
Jones' you-got-yours smirk of satisfaction was interrupted by Joker's snort before it even got started.
"Permission to shoot him on Donnelly's behalf?" Joker asked.
The corner of Shepard's mouth twitched up. "Granted."
Jones started to splutter, realized he was spluttering at the Commander, and swallowed it. Barely.
XO Nguyen's 'impassive' face let even less through than Shepard's. "I think the doctor have something to say about giving the crew permission to shoot each other."
"It's fine," Shepard said, and now the other corner of her mouth twitched up into a definite smile. "Chakwas already has permission to shoot whoever she wants."

EDIT: FUCK I FORGOT THE N7 ON THEIR HOODIE IM AN IDIOT ALDJALDJAKDH Just pretend its there plz i just got off my laptop and can't fix it
Was thinking about what I said in my discord server about Saren and the positive association with cheese that I had realized, and decided I wanted to sketch it out-
So have the first time Saren was given cheese, which was the first time he had eaten something other than General nutrition bars, the first time Cam had willingly sat next to him and the first time anyone had offered any genuine kindness since being on the Normandy.
Since then, Cam would go in with a small block of cheese, and it would be how they got him somewhat acclimated despite people staring into the medbay window every now and then to see what was going on. It thus became almost like a 'comfort food', and once he was able to roam the ship freely, he would often linger around the kitchen and wait patiently for the Cheese Tax™️ whenever the fridge was opened.
Here's the gist of the whole realization because it was both sweet and slightly sad:
So... yeah! My Saren is a cheese fiend, and that's why. It started out as a joke and then suddenly it wasn't a joke anymore and had more of an actual reason behind it.
I had been thinking about the whole cheese thing with Saren becaus cheese and turians has been a bit of a not-so-inside joke between me and two friends and it always ends up at him specifically loving it, and it kinda occurred to me that one of the reasons he's a fiend for it when given the chance is that it's probably the very first 'real' food he had eaten on the Normandy that wasn't basic nutrition bars, and while Cam would normally sit in the room and also eat the bars with him to make sure he ate, the cheese was probably the first thing they actively sat next to him and shared with him- which resulted in his revived brain associating cheese with the first actual kindness anyone had shown him in… probably years, other than when Nihlus was alive.
So he goes after cheese like it's the first thing he's eaten in months each time because of the genuine positive reinforcement and association it has, and Cam learned pretty quickly that until he's 'properly socialized' again, they need to give him cheese so his anxiety doesn't skyrocket into unintentional violence. (AKA so his biotics don't react to unchecked emotion and cause a burst that's likely to take out anyone sitting within 20 feet of him)

Replaying Mass Effect 1's intro because I'm doing a technical analysis of how the original Jenkins/Chakwas dialogue is constructed for an example in a Branching Dialogue class, and damn Bioware is *so* efficient during this introduction, it's quite remarkable.
Not only does it introduce two whole NPCs, the immediate intrigue and offer up information about the world and dynamics of power within this world (okay it does veer towards "as you know, [stuff everybody knows about]" territory, but given the density of that world and the fact that it's optional information the player has to voluntarily seek, I think it's as fine as they could get away with honestly), but it introduces Shepard as a player-character and a concept pretty wonderfully too. It's a great tutorial for how the conversation system works, what is Renegade and Paragon behavior and how NPCs will react to that, how choices will be recorded and reacted to (aka: Jenkins reacting to your background, AND you're given a chance to personalize your Shepard's reaction to the public perception of your life events), and on top of that, your role as a commander.
I know Jenkins is a joke character, but he does a very efficient job as a tutorial for the way NPCs will look up to you, how you might influence them, and how you are responsible for them --foreshadowing more complicated moments later down the line with Wrex, Ash, Kaidan and even Garrus for example.
This dialogue takes between 1'30 to 4' tops if you explore every option, and it demands the player to engage actively with the system almost the entire time. The efficiency on display is seriously impressive. It's deceivingly simple-looking too, while actually hiding a non-negligeable number of little checks under the hood for what appears to be very straightforward conversation.
Anyway. Some long overdue Mass Effect Appreciation moment! The writers/system designers sure knew what they were doing here.

My Shepard sucks at biotics. In many ways.
BUUUT I recently re-played that one mission on Illium where you get exposed to Minagen X3 ((thanks @mallaidhsomo for reminding me of its name)) and thought I could make something out of it.
Quick recap for those who don't know what it is ; it's an illegal chemical that boosts biotics, but a large quantity can be lethal to the user.

I’m replaying the Mass Effect series after a long break - I bought the Legendary Edition in the sales.
Jane Shepard is a celebrated war hero, a loyal Alliance soldier, and in my case, always on the side of the people, doing the difficult humane choices. A Paragon.
In ME1 the team makes sense, even the aliens. They have a common goal and they work together towards that goal. There’s trust, respect and even friendship among that group.
In ME2 I feel like there’s way too many companions and most of them don’t make any sense. Half of them feel like they have been made controversial in the way producers want weird controversial people in reality TV shows - for the drama. This is a paramilitary operation, we ain’t got room for drama!
Jane Shepard, who’s been on her own two feet for like a week and absolutely not recovered from hearing that she’s died and been brought back to life after two years by Cerberus. That her old team has moved on, that her beloved Kaidan is unreachable and also moved on. That she’s apparently bound to fucking Cerberus now??
She reads the dossiers The Illusive Man has given her. A renegade looney (Archangel), a bounty hunter (Zaeed), a dangerous convicted criminal in actual prison (Jack), another criminal (Kasumi), and so on. Not to mention Miranda who’s a real haughty bitch holding the Cerberus whip.
Luckily there’s Jacob, who’s past, morals and work ethic are in line with Shepard’s. Luckily there’s Joker who is the only one who can make her smile and laugh in the first weeks. Luckily there’s Dr. Karin Chakwas. Jane gets misty eyed and nostalgic drunk with her and ends up crying alone and drunk in her bunk.
Shepard also goes alone to the Normandy SR1 crash site, closes her radio and weeps alone, trying to come to terms with what she has lost and what she has become.
Luckily Shepard goes for Archangel and finds her old mate Garrus. She’s so relieved to get that jackass back in her team. Her bestie.
Luckily there’s Mordin Solus, whose recruitment makes actual sense, and whose expertise Shepard can respect and whose ramblings she enjoys, even if they don’t always agree on everything. That doesn’t matter because Mordin is military trained and Shepard does not need to worry about him disobeying orders.
But Zaeed? Jack? Kasumi? Even Grunt? Their recruitment makes absolutely no sense.
I think Shepard should have thrown those dossiers to the bin.
(I lowkey love Jack, btw, and Zaeed fills a role Bioware always has, but still. I’m also not there yet with Samara and the others in my current playthrough.)
