Hierarchy as a tool for Fun
Some players like to go into a roleplaying game and say "let's escape from the real world". They want their character to be independent! Answering to nobody! Nothing wrong with that, but I believe there's some good opportunities to use an organization in the game for rewards, development, and consequences. Hear me out:
The Rewards: Your PCs return from a dangerous mission, and not only receive a reward of cash and prizes, but their names and portraits go up in the Hall of Knights forever! Now NPCs will have to address them with a title, or take their advice seriously when everyone stands around that map table with the little army figures. I recommend being extremely professional until you've acquired fantasy tenure, so you can legally drink tea with the Queen while polymorphed into an ostrich. Or maybe you like the ranks and rewards, but not the good deeds? Your PC might ascend through an organized crime network, via murder and blackmail, until you have the power to track down the people responsible for your tragic past.
The Development: Your PC (perhaps as a result of a promotion) is given authority over some NPC members of the organization. Perhaps you've been tasked by your vampire Baron with setting up a new outpost and blood alchemy lab in the contested territory of Staten Island. Should be self-sustaining after a while, but for a month or so you've got to keep a half dozen Kindred on task, make sure they set the patrols properly, etc. Do you have what it takes for leadership? It's a neat little arc to try out! Or, what about this: your PC, one of the apprentice Navigators on the Rogue Trader ship, watches their mentor from the other side of a malfunctioning airlock. If they save him, they'll be celebrated. If they walk away, they might be promoted.
The Consequences: If you make a PC who believes in something, it makes a great story when that thing turns against you. But it doesn't have to be corruption and treachery every time. Sometimes, a failed mission or a hasty decision might create an epic scene where you try to explain yourself - or shout at the chief that you shouldn't have to explain yourself! Alternatively, what if your PC in a game of Masks is pulled out of a tough fight by the Justice League Hero Headquarters, avoiding the villain's plot but being demoted and losing their hard-won responsibilities? There's always fates worse than damage.

RATGRL - Snack Rat (2023)
This new release from New Jersey's most transgender rat is the hottest hyperpop album (left) to immediately be followed by a ska punk version of the same album (right) of the summer!

for a Masks: New Generation Campaign, I chose to make this cool plant humanoid hybrid. I based him off Orchids and things like Bleeding Heart Flowers and Banana hearts. He can absorb solar energy and project it as hard light fractals. Named them Helianthus.
I also took inspiration from Sylvari from Guild Wars 2
here's him in his casual clothes

Meet Sydney Allan! He was an ordinary high school student, but puberty was a little harder on him than most. Now he's got five eyes, six wings, a constant light source around his head and diamond skin. Recently he ended up in the crossfire of a supervillain's rampage and ended up saving some innocents, but he's reluctant to call himself a superhero. Even as other heroes try to recruit him, he just wants to hide away and live a quiet life... but his just-in-case hero name would be Nephilim.

This year, for our masks game, I offered my players the chance to GM (because I couldn't think up a Halloween special plot/ one-off). I got to reprise my role of Kenny (an alternate version, of course) and I had a blast.
I drew everybody in their Halloween costumes and made special tokens for us on roll20. I hope the gm had a good time. I may end up drawing scenes from the game... we'll see.

If one of your PCs has telepathy as a power, it's a great vehicle for one-shots and/or alternate reality episodes. The superhero Psyborg Five falls asleep after a long day of saving the city, and her mind pulls the rest of her friends into an exploration of some old locked memories from the past... The warlock Bakhtiar receives a special mission from his patron, who uses his mind as an "antenna" to bring the whole party into a high-stakes negotiation between the Sidereal Dominion, the Last Unseen, and the Inverse Clock.
What other mental landscapes could be used in an adventure?
