in defence of ginny weasley (ft fleur delacour)
never thought i would feel strongly enough about this topic to comment on it, but the ginny bashing in this fandom is just insane so i thought why the hell not. ginny seems to get hate for everything under the sun from being being a mary sue who can do no wrong in anyone’s eyes (meaning she’s boring and uninteresting as a character) to being a nasty bully responsible for hurting those around her (??? and they’re both completely contradictory statements btw). when the latter is brought up, ginny’s “terrible” mistreatment of fleur is always front and centre. ‘she’s nasty, she’s cruel, she is a jealous bully etc!’ and i just feel like we should put on our thinking caps and actually take a step back for a fucking second. people may disagree with me, but i think ginny’s reaction to fleur was totally understandable — and reminder, she is a TEENAGE girl, (not to mention both mrs weasley and hermione held fleur in the same regard but no one seems to focus on that side of things).
now in the books, we do see ginny mocking fleur, calling her ‘phlegm’ behind her back, imitating her gait and elegance, expressing her annoyance at her newfound presence in their lives.
let’s look at why she might have reacted that way. first of all, in general, we see that the w are a very humble and welcoming family; they don’t have much but what they do have, they are more than willing to share with others. their financial circumstance plays a massive role in how the characters in the wea clan react and interact with others (as seen with their refusal to accept money from harry etc). their sense of pride in that regard is also quite prevalent. we see that when harry first goes to the burrow, ron is slightly embarrassed by his home, painfully aware of the way many people in the wizarding community view/judge them. when harry goes on to say it’s best place he’s ever seen, we immediately see how touched ron is. ginny is the same in that sense — embarrassed that she has second hand robes & books etc, but at the same time she, like ron, is fiercely protective of what they do have, and what they as a family stand for. they are also very protective of people they love inside and outside of the family (see, ron with ginny, mrs weasleys with all of them etc).
this is relevant because one of the reasons ginny and in turn mrs weasley, have a problem with fleur is the way she talks to them. despite them inviting her into their home, fleur makes her distaste clear even if it is in small ways. she says it’s boring at their house as there’s nothing to do, she often talks disparagingly about how things are done in the weasley household, she loudly mocks celestina warbeck (who mrs weasley loves to play at christmas time) and insults her, she speaks badly about tonks several times etc. her words and mannerisms are also viewed by some (ginny etc) as very pretentious and arrogant — also rather posh, a sign of her family’s wealth (which might have been a sore spot for ginny also).
now don’t get me wrong. i love fleur as a character. i think she’s really cool, charming and brave, and i wish we got to see more of her honestly!! i think she makes a lovely contrast to the other younger characters, and i think she undergoes some nice character development in the books we do see her in. it’s also very clear to me, that when she acts the way she does, it is never out of malice or cruelty— it comes from a place of openness and honesty — which often comes across as quite blunt. it’s a cultural disconnect in many ways; when she inadvertently insults people throughout the books, i think it’s pretty obvious she isn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings. but i also think it’s obvious how this attitude might annoy those around her.
calling ginny is a big bad bully for disliking fleur (in the beginning), when her behaviour towards the weasley family would make anyone a bit frustrated, is a bit far. not to mention, her individual treatment of ginny is understandably annoying - ginny complains that fleur is very condescending when speaking to her (‘you’d think i were about three!’).
there’s also the fact that ginny is bill’s little sister. he is her favourite brother (as seen from the way she respects him and his opinions, looks up to him - she wanted to go to hogwarts ever since bill went!). ginny having a reaction to her brother’s new girlfriend is very normal - he’s her big brother! all his attention is now on his new girlfriend - who ginny finds to be full of herself, patronising & annoying. part of her may also be worried that fleur will end up breaking his heart in the end — because she’s protective of her brother.
add the fact that her brother and old crush and basically every man ever is drawn to her because of her godly beauty (as a part veela), her and bill’s wont to shower each other in public displays of affection (who wants to see their brother doing this!?) and the fact that ginny always gotten along with tonks (the person her and molly had in mind for bill’s future partner) has always treated her kindly and as an equal, and therefore would much prefer as a sister-in-law — it’s not that surprising that ginny feels the way she does towards fleur.
nevertheless, do i think this is something ginny would grow out of? yes, of course. we already see changes in their relationship in the final book. besides, a lot of this stuff is surface level, as ginny and fleur don’t know all that much about each other — i think fleur’s love for bill (especially shown in the hospital wing after he’s been attacked by greyback) definitely changes the way ginny regards her. i also like to think that they grew closer as they got older, as with age comes maturity, and with maturity comes understanding. i also feel that fleur was someone who really stepped up when it came to supporting the weasleys after fred’s death, something that ginny would have appreciated. i see them having a nice relationship later in life.
ANYWAY, this was an exceedingly long rant for which i apologise but i have often seen people talk about how nasty ginny is to fleur, and i think it’s so unfair to not look at the context which leads to her being a little frustrated at her future sister in law. plus, she is allowed to dislike someone who she does not get along with and who she finds unpleasant to be around. we all have people like that in our lives but god forbid ginny does…not to mention, ginny is never openly rude to her EVER, and she’s allowed to voice her frustrations to her friends/family. the fact people call her an outright bully for this is just insane.
people on here will defend so many other dubious characters but the second a teenage character with good intentions makes a mistake / doesn’t act perfectly (i.e ron, ginny), they are suddenly the epitome of evil in human form, i mean get a grip, honestly. also one last quick thing(!!!), i do note some people blame jkr for writing her female characters this way, as we’ve seen the way she seems to frown upon conventional/typical displays of femininity (lavender and parvati being seen as ‘silly’ girls with frivolous thoughts, cho chang as overly emotional - despite having a very rational reaction to the death of her boyfriend, fleur as overly feminine and therefore less serious/intelligent). her heroines are women who often conceal or discard these more feminine traits — and i will say that despite loving these characters very much, i do think some more nuance here, could have been very beneficial to the story, and to the message being sent to young female/female identifying readers. there is strength in femininity, and rejecting feminine traits does not make you more or less a person.
okay, rant over. if you actually got to the end, bless you, if not — well, that’s totally fair (lol). also please don’t kill me in the comment section if you disagree. this is just my two cents. ok that’s all.

Cursed Child rant? as a treat? 👉👈
Oh god. Where to even start. Listen, I know some people enjoy CC and I say more power to you. I'm not here to be the fun police and say what people can and can't like or write fic about or derive meaning from or whatever. But for me, personally, Cursed Child is an absolute mess of the worst kind that irritates me on a profound level.
First off, it's completely inconsistent with the canon characterizations and established rules of world building (and JKR didn't even do that much world building so there wasn't that much to keep track of and yet, they couldn't even bother to do that). I mean, Cedric, who tried to give the Triwizard Cup to Harry doesn't win and that somehow causes him to become a Death Eater??? Huh? It's not just ooc. It's bad storytelling. I mean, even if he was a hugely sore loser why would losing a tournament cause him to join an extremist blood purist paramilitary group? That has nothing to do with him losing. It's stupid and childish and nonsensical and SO bad.
And really? That's the best you can come up with? If the point of that whole thing was the tired trope of 'time travel goes wrong and makes things worse' they could've just had the gang expose Crouch earlier but instead of Voldemort not returning he just ends up returning but not using Harry's blood which allows him to do his original plan of growing his power in secret. And idk. Maybe then he takes over and he kills Harry and Harry doesn't come back. I didn't even put any effort into that. It's a bit dumb and inelegant but it gets the job done without wild character assassination and a lack of logic so profound it would insult the reasoning abilities of a fungus.
But ok, let's judge it as its own vaguely Harry Potter inspired thing rather than as an actual sequel to the canon series. You know what the result is? IT'S STILL BAD. It's just. SO BAD. I don't understand how it's a real thing.
It's like a parody of a bad play. It can't possibly be real. Harry suddenly has a phobia of pigeons? Why??? It's so...stupid. And I'm supposed to take that seriously? What? And the dialogue. The dialogue. "Bad" doesn't even cover it. The fact that "Wow. Squeak. My geekness is a-quivering" is a real actual line in the actual play causes me physical pain. WHO WRITES THAT?! AND THEN LEAVES IT IN THE FINAL DRAFT?!?!?
And Delphi. WHAT EVEN?! She's literally like a parody of a bad fanfic Mary Sue. Down to the blue streak in her hair. But we're supposed to take her seriously? As a villain? Tf? She's like a bad Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way knockoff. The whole play is like an unfunny parody of bad writing. But it's not supposed to be. It actually pretends to be a genuine drama. Which is so much worse. I truly think My Immortal is better. And way funnier.
No effort at all went into the story construction. Characters act incredibly childishly and unrealistically and simplistically. The story doesn't feel like it was written by adults. There's no feeling or depth or emotion. It's all plot contrivances and nauseatingly simplistic writing. It isn't a story. It's just some stuff that happens. Because the writers were just like 'eh it's Harry Potter it'll sell.' And that's not art. That's just churned out content. And it bothers me on such a profound level that they did it and got away with it.
I would be embarrassed to write that for myself, let alone to turn that in as a professional writer. It's so inconsistent with the original story that I legitimately think the 2 guys who wrote it didn't even read the books. They just glanced at the wiki and decided they were good to go. Despite being PAID to do this. How sloppy is that? Not to mention Harry Potter meant so much to so many people who were ecstatic to get more content yet the two clowns who wrote this just skimmed the wiki and then vomited out some of the worst lines ever penned in history and called it a day.

every time someone bitches about how drizzt is Inexplicably Good For No Reason and that makes him a too-good mary sue my literary pretention meter goes up another pip
Like huh! I wonder why Drizzt would kick back against the constant indoctrination of the academy and the implied social skills that are required to be a proper adult in Menzo society
“I will remember everything you taught me,” Drizzt promised, dodging a cut and launching a fierce counter of his own. “I will carve my name in the halls of Melee-Magthere and make you proud.” The scowl on Zak’s face surprised Drizzt, and the young drow grew even more confused when the weapons master’s next attack sent a sword knifing straight at his heart. Drizzt leaped aside, slapping at the blade in sheer desperation, and narrowly avoided impalement. “Are you so very sure of yourself?” Zak growled, stubbornly pursuing Drizzt. Drizzt set himself as their blades met in ringing fury. “I am a fighter,” he declared. “A drow warrior!” “You are a dancer!” Zak shot back in a derisive tone. He slammed his sword onto Drizzt’s blocking scimitar so savagely that the young drow’s arm tingled. “An imposter!” Zak cried. “A pretender to a title you cannot begin to understand!”
It's not like he had a sudden fight with his beloved mentor right before they left
But Zak was relentless. He fended the attacks and continued his lesson. “Do you know the emotions of murder?” he spat. “Have you reconciled yourself to the act you committed?” Drizzt’s only answers were a frustrated growl and a renewed attack. “Ah, the pleasure of plunging your sword into the bosom of a high priestess,” Zak taunted. “To see the light of warmth leave her body while her lips utter silent curses in your face! Or have you ever heard the screams of dying children?” [...] “How loud, those screams,” Zak continued. “They echo over the centuries in your mind; they chase you down the paths of your entire life.” Zak halted the action so that Drizzt might weigh his every word. “You have never heard them, have you, dancer?” The weapons master stretched his arms out wide, an invitation. “Come, then, and claim your second kill,” he said, tapping his stomach. “In the belly, where the pain is greatest, so that my screams may echo in your mind. Prove to me that you are the drow warrior you claim to be.” The tips of Drizzt’s scimitars slowly made their way to the stone floor. He wore no smile now. “You hesitate,” Zak laughed at him. “This is your chance to make your name. A single thrust, and you will send a reputation into the Academy before you. Other students, even masters, will whisper your name as you pass. ‘Drizzt Do’Urden,’ they will say. ‘The boy who slew the most honored weapons master in all of Menzoberranzan!’ Is this not what you desire?” “Damn you,” Drizzt spat back, but still he made no move to attack. “Drow warrior?” Zak chided him. “Do not be so quick to claim a title you cannot begin to understand!” Drizzt came on then, in a fury he had never before known. His purpose was not to kill, but to defeat his teacher, to steal the taunts from Zak’s mouth with a fighting display too impressive to be derided.
where Drizzt desperately wanted validation that he Did Good and learned everything Zak wanted him to learn and got nothing but Zak suddenly turning on him and telling him he was a stupid child who didn't understand anything about what being a drow warrior really means. it went from a clean fair fight to suddenly being tricked
“Treachery,” Drizzt spat a third time. “It is our way,” Zak replied. “You will learn.” “It is your way,” snarled Drizzt. “You grin when you speak of murdering clerics of the Spider Queen. Do you so enjoy killing? Killing drow?” Zak could not find an answer to the accusing question. Drizzt’s words hurt him profoundly because they rang of truth, and because Zak had come to view his penchant for killing clerics of Lolth as a cowardly response to his own unanswerable frustrations. “You would have killed me,” Drizzt said bluntly. “But I did not,” Zak retorted. “And now you live to go to the Academy—to take a dagger in the back because you are blind to the realities of our world, because you refuse to acknowledge what your people are. “Or you will become one of them,” Zak growled. “Either way, the Drizzt Do’Urden I have known will surely die.” Drizzt’s face twisted, and he couldn’t even find the words to dispute the possibilities Zak was spitting at him. He felt the blood drain from his face, though his heart raged. He walked away, letting his glare linger on Zak for many steps. “Go, then, Drizzt Do’Urden!” Zak cried after him. “Go to the Academy and bask in the glory of your prowess. Remember, though, the consequences of such skills. Always there are consequences!” Zak retreated to the security of his private chamber. The door to the room closed behind the weapons master with such a sound of finality that it spun Zak back to face its empty stone. “Go, then, Drizzt Do’Urden,” he whispered in quiet lament. “Go to the Academy and learn who you really are.” [...] Drizzt looked out into the myriad colors and shapes that composed Menzoberranzan. “What is this place?” he whispered, realizing how little he knew of his homeland beyond the walls of his own house. Zak’s words—Zak’s rage—pressed in on Drizzt as he stood there, reminding him of his ignorance and hinting at a dark path ahead. “This is the world,” Dinin replied, though Drizzt’s question had been rhetorical. “Do not worry, Secondboy,” he laughed, moving up onto the railing. “You will learn of Menzoberranzan in the Academy. You will learn who you are and who your people are.” The declaration unsettled Drizzt. Perhaps—remembering his last bitter encounter with the drow he had most trusted—that knowledge was exactly what he was afraid of.
And its like GEE. I WONDER WHY DRIZZT HAS SUCH AN AVERSION TO BETRAYAL AND THE LESSONS THEY TEACH IN THE ACADEMY. IT'S NOT LIKE "WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A DROW WARRIOR" IS THE LAST THING HIS DAD LEFT HIM WITH BEFORE HE WENT OFF TO THE ACADEMY FOR TEN YEARS. ITS NOT LIKE HIS FIRST EXPERIENCE OF "BEING A PROPER DROW" WAS A REJECTION THAT HURT HIM DEEPLY OR ANYTHING.
Naw naw he's just a perfect little guy. Just the perfect mary sue. Obviously it just comes from nowhere because he is just so good. It's not foreshadowed at all.

Ok guys, I thought about this and I decided to redo how my au goes, Artsy isn’t a Mary Sue that gets thrown in the cellar anymore XD Have fun reading!
After all 9 episodes of TADC, the gang is sick and tired of being cooped up in this circus and want to go home more than ever, so after the final adventure, they all go into Kinger’s Fort to brainstorm ideas, Artsy writing them down. They spend hours and hours trying to come up with ways to get home, but with nothing to use, after Pomni’s arrival, Caine fixed the exit door mishap, now the exit door is never visible to the members. Artsy suddenly comes up with the idea to draw a new exit door! They immediately try it but can’t open it, so Jax tries every single one of his keys to open it, but to no avail. The gang is heartbroken at their failed experiment, but Ragatha says not to give up hope, they at least have the door now. Gangle then suggests Artsy to draw a key, so Jax immediately takes her and draws all sorts of keys, but once again, none will work. They try all sorts of stuff, using Gangle’s now broken comedy mask, Zooble’s parts, Ragatha’s sewing needles, Kinger’s little trinkets, ect. After a while of this, they finally give up and go to bed. But not Artsy and Pomni, they keep working all night to open the door, but they only stop when Caine wakes them up for the next adventure. But Pomni and Artsy stop him and ask if he can open the door. Caine freezes and says again that the exit isn’t finished but Artsy instead insists that he finishes it, with her being a pencil, he can draw anything and that today's adventure could be to finish the exit, getting everyone to work on it with him. Everyone agrees, except Caine, he hates the idea and sends everyone to their rooms and locks them there. While he’s alone in his thoughts, he wonders how this happened, he made sure to get rid of the exit door! How did they find another door?! Then he realized, it was pink, the original door is red. It was the pencil. He immediately teleports Artsy to him and demands how she drew an exit door. She told him that Pomni told her how it looked and she drew it. Caine then made Artsy’s pencil tip unsharpened, just a regular, default pencil, but what Caine failed to realise was that Artsy gave Pomni a piece of her wax. Now they only have this tiny piece of pencil wax left and they had to use it very wisley. Artsy was furious, she hated her new form, having to hop to places, being carried if she got tired, adventures became horrible, she couldn’t draw anything. Overall, life was miserable for her, and Caine did nothing, he ignored her and her problems, just like everyone else in the circus. Artsy had become resentful and started disobeying Caine, acting out constantly, and encouraged the others to do the same, which they did. Soon, all hell broke loose in the circus, Caine couldn’t control his circus members anymore, they never went on adventures anymore, and he knew they were acting like this because they wanted the exit, so Caine finally backed down and agreed to Artsy and Pomni’s original idea, they’d all work on the exit together. Caine gave Artsy her original form and the work finally began. After all these years, they were going to go home. The exit soon became a funhouse tunnel of rooms, each character had their own rooms to go through, and at the very end was a memorial for those who had abstracted, a shrine for all of them was on all sides of the rooms, and the final door to go home. But before they all went through, they needed to decide how they’d find each other in the real world. They decided on going by their Circus names, saying, “Hi I’m, (real name), but my friends call me (circus name). It was flawless. So finally, Caine said his final goodbyes to everyone, but Artsy and Pomni felt pity for the ringmaster, so they both promised to come back and visit him every once in a while. Caine was satisfied with this and they went back home. When they got back to the real world, they found that they were all together! They reunited quickly and tried to leave the office complex. What they didn’t know was that it had been abandoned, everything was dingy and dirty and just completely run down. As they left the complex, they found one
single man standing in the lobby. Kinger immediately recognised him as the owner of the C&A company, Mr. Miller. Miller immediately recognised him too and told everyone how Kinger made the game, instantly making him look bad. Artsy defended him by saying that he didn’t know he’d be trapped in the game as everyone agreed, and stood by Kinger’s side. Miller had enough and demanded they put the headsets back on. They protested and made it clear that they’d never go back in that game. Miller then brought up how Artsy and Pomni promised Caine, and tried to put the headsets on them himself! The gang quickly took him down and called the police. He was later arrested for multiple felonies and fraud charges. As the gang realised how long it’d been since they first came into the circus, they decided to live together so they could figure out how to navigate the world together, except Jax, he was the only one who went back home. So now the gang is doing their best to reintegrate into society all while figuring out how the world works. Pomni and Artsy do visit Caine and somehow managed to convince the others to join them.
TL;DR
The gang is tired of being trapped, they have Artsy draw a door, nothing will open it, they ask Caine for help, he refuses, they rebel and Caine gives in. They make the exit maze to their liking and Artsy and Pomni promise to visit Caine. They go into the real world and the place is abandoned. The owner, Mr. Miller tells them that Kinger made the game and tries to put the headsets on them again. They take him down and call the police and have him arrested. The gang decides to live together (except Jax) and Artsy and Pomni convince the others to visit Caine with them.

i don't exactly know how to deal with this - I'm not a big enough person on tumblr to have ever been confronted to this type of comment :
but it still surprised me to see this when my experience on here has honestly been overwhelmingly positive and I've never really talked or met someone who'd comment something like that on here.
i don't honestly think it's wrong to put this person on "blast" (even though, let's be honest, me posting about it is less of a blast and more of a nice summer night breeze.) since they have commented this publicly for everyone to see - so i see no issue in answering in a just as public of a way.
anyway just wanted to say that I think it's kind of sad that you value fictional characters and people in general based on their physical appearance, and that you seem to forget there is an actor aka a real person behind that role.
and oops - guess what - whatever you think of the appearance of any fucking actor - that's not the part of their job that fucking matters!!
Now, let's try to see walk a few centimeters in your shoes. In your eyes, Foggy is ugly as fuck. So that means he can't get the girl, right? Is that how the story goes? Whatever his personality, his humor or his charm - everybody always only looks at physical appearance and there is not ONE person on this earth who cares, or should care, about what's really underneath.
now apparently, Hallelujah, Karen is attractive in your eyes so she deserves love. Ugh, but that is SO RUINED by the fact that she's ANNOYING AS HELL.....EW.....
There's 2 ways for me to take that Karen is annoying comment.
1 - it's the Skyler White Syndrome and any woman who worries, cares, makes mistakes or has any kind of character flaw is just a nagging annoying woman who's ruining your badass man show. like "guys? what the fuck? there's someone else than a muscular superhero dude or the very evil/murderous/manipulative/actually annoying guy that i somehow forgive on my fucking screen!!! hide that shit or else my masculinity will dissappear!!!!!!!!!"
Now since I don't know your gender or your background - this could be either internalized misogyny or plain old sexism at play. Couldn't care less. Either way it's stupid to think that a female character is either perfect or horrible, a mary sue or a bitch. and that you'll complain either way.
2. I give you the benefit of the doubt. You finding Karen annoying has nothing to do with your gender or what you think of women in media and entertainment and more with the fact that you honestly do find her annoying. What exactly has she done to be described as annoying? Is her dialogue bad? Is her story taking away from Matt's? Are her decisions stupid or irrational and you just can't take it when a character makes actual mistakes?
What exactly are you criticizing her for? Because since I've written my post about romantic relationships i'm willing to bet that your "Karen is annoying" thing is said in a romantic context and that it's just the way she speaks or her personality that you dislike, and this has nothing to do with what actually makes her character interesting or how her backstory has shaped her actions and behavior.
Now I get that we all have our favorite characters - and we have characters we don't like to see on screen. But I wouldn't say that Foggy "being ugly" and Karen "being annoying" qualify as legitimate reasons for you to think they don't deserve to have romantic relationships or that they. "TERRORIZE" MATT??
What kind of show have you been watching? Did you get a bootleg iron man dvd and get confused? where are you getting this from?
Are you saying that you take any conflict that Matt can have with his friends is terrorism? That they're ruining his life? That every time they say they're worried, everytime they tell him not to be Daredevil, because of their own love for their FRIEND, that's terrorism???
Matt cares about them just as much as they care about him, and I'd hardly qualify their overprotectiveness, or honestly, with Matt putting himself on the brink of death all the time, just protectiveness, as TERRORISM.
These "two bums" deserve to be on the show because they're an essential part of Matt's character development and Matt's life in general. He needs loved ones to protect, loved ones to worry about him, loved ones to encourage him, loved ones to call him out from time to time, loved ones that have been through it with him and have stuck with him for a long time.
And the two actors that play them deserve just as much of a chance to get to bring something new to their performance and get to share the screen with long-time friends.
you know.
in the reboot of a show that they were major characters of.
i think i got everything out. hope you're willing to expose yourself to a different opinion and that you read this whole post @nyxxhecate
also. your blog is pretty empty. you should get on that if you don't want people to think you're some spam account.
the end :)

hey, could you go into more detail with what you mean with ‘being precious’ with characters. im curious and i like your writing a lot <3
i think it's difficult to express without it reading as just "mary sue" critique, you know. tvtropes bullshit. but it is kind of a thing that occupies the same space. and atop that, it's a thing that's a little bit difficult to express without context but i think there are three pretty meaningful examples of a character being made worse by the author from which you are smart enough to discern what i mean
the thing which ties them together is this: you are meant to come out of their story with an affection for the character that rivals the author's care for them - the author wants you to feel as much for this character as they do, but is afraid of portraying the character in flawed or even grounded ways, when the character's flaws or ways in which they are a grounded character tend to be what makes them relateable or worth caring about.
example number one is albus dumbledore. the end of harry potter is genuinely one of the worst things i've ever read, even before the terf shit, and this is best expressed through the way characters around him act - he is always right, except when he's wrong, but the ways in which he's wrong are okay because the character archetype that he turns out to be in the last book before he dies is "guy who makes the hard decisions because nobody else will", winston churchill guy. and naturally, jk rowling adores him so much that she made him the protagonist of her flop three-movie pentology even though there was a better protagonist right there with newt. he is a character who is thoroughly adored by the author in a way that ruins the story.
example number two is johnny, from the room. tommy wiseau is by no means a great artist, but i think a lot of people resent analyzing the room as art because it is so obviously bad and i think that takes away from its most compelling fact. johnny is characterized as too good for this world, as though the world itself was closing in on him, ready to take him out. his future wife is cheating with his best friend, lying about him being an abuser to her friends, his boss doesnt give him his promotion for no reason, his mother in law would put aside her cancer diagnosis to further tear apart her daughters marriage, and through this, johnny does nothing wrong. he was always too good for this sinful world. he is a character who is thoroughly adored by the author in a way that ruins the story.
example number three, as mentioned in that last ask, is lin manuel miranda's portrayal of alexander hamilton, which kind of combines the both of the previous examples. throughout hamilton, alexander hamilton is repeatedly portrayed as a tortured artist, a guy who writes like he's running out of time, a guy whose writing is so powerful that he could have meaningfully changed the world, if he were not also, a dipshit idiot who got shot in a duel. and hamilton is interesting, because the story itself bends over backwards to imagine new outs for him. when his wife, who is so upset by his actions that she exempts herself from being in the writings from which hamilton was based, something i am to believe is made up whole cloth for hamilton, the story itself goes out of its way to say "what if the stuff that his wife destroyed would have redeemed him" when the answer is, probably not, he was a shithead, but lin manuel miranda can't help but ask, "what if hamilton was actually just like me fr, a misunderstood dude who just wanted to make great art", he is a character who is thoroughly adored by the author in a way that ruins the story.
i dont really want to use the term "mary sue" or whatever because it is pretty loaded, and honestly, if the story you're telling justifies this feeling, i tend to really enjoy characters who really are just flawless, characters who the authors love and want you to love too. but theyre character studies - half blood prince and deathly hallows are almost entirely about dumbledore and his relationship to the cast, and it's the worst shit i've ever read. the room would be so unbelievably forgettable without johnny. and hamilton is hamilton.
and its the kind of thing i found myself prone to doing too - that kind of feverish, "he would not fucking say that" behavior about a character who would definitely, absolutely do that. i felt this way for a while about jane in post-canon, and i still kind of think post-canon jane deserved a better arc, to make a tragedy out of her existence, but that is a desire i have because i care a lot about jane crocker, you know?

Round 3
Propaganda why Zoey Redbird is insufferable:
Protagonist centered morality, slutshames other girls but has a lot of boys herself including one who raped someone else (I think at least)
She’s presented as being the perfect person to replace a bully character in a position of power because she’s such a good and pure person, and every book it’s nothing but her calling people the R slur, or sluts, or freaks, or various slurs against gay people, or talking out loud about how ugly her classmates are with her friends, or saying that certain people shouldn’t be allowed to breed if they’re too useless or gross, or saying gay men are basically women, or differentiating between which gay people are the good kind or the bad kind based on how annoying she thinks they are. And then after all of that is established in the first book, by the second she’s pushing two racist caricatures of black men in front of a truck and kills them and it is never brought up again. And every book ends with her getting a magical tattoo no one in history has ever gotten, confirming that she is canonically one of the best people to ever be alive even after murdering two people for annoying her
INCREDIBLY hypocritical, slut-shaming mary-sue of an idiot. She constantly calls one girl a hoe (for sucking a guy's dick without his consent (no, the thing Zoe disagrees with WASN'T the rape issue, it was the blowjob!!!)) Despite having a Harem of different guys herself. And no, she isn't even poly about it, all the dudes are constantly being aggro to each other and clearly want to be exclusive.
She also becomes a rape apologist for one of the harem guys AND the Big Bad, who is an immortal who once RAPED AN ENTIRE TRIBE OF NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN. But he's soooooo hot! *eyeroll*
FUCKING Pick-Me girl of all time. If mysogyny was a competetive sport then Zoey would be on the olympic team.
Propaganda why Kazuya Kinoshita is insufferable:
Pathetic loser who never grows as a character and drags down the lives of the girls around him because he’s so selfish
Bland boring loser gets a whole bunch of cute girls to actually fall in love with him by being an absolute pissant go away challenge
After his girlfriend dumps him, Kazuya hires a rent-a-girlfriend (basically a sex worker without the actual sex) to accompany him on a date. They have a great time together and go their separate ways. Afterwards when he goes to leave a review, he sees all the other good reviews and gets jealous because she's being hired by other men, and leaves a one-star review out of spite. This is his starting point and he barely gets better, constantly making his personal issues other people's problem.

Mary Sue Davis
Mary Sue Davis
So true! Copied and posted from a friend:
"NOT OPEN FOR DEBATE. IF YOU ARE OFFENDED EASILY THEN DON'T READ THIS.
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying. Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."
Her father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the conservative side of the fence."
If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!
If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him..
If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.
If a conservative reads this, he'll post it. A liberal will delete it because he's "offended."
Copied and revised.
Well, I posted it. And feel it’s spot on. Your call."

simon and akira ogogogogog ogogogogo go
UNDER A CUT TO PRESERVE EVERYONES DASHBOARDS I THINK. IT WONT BE THAT LONG BUT IT WONT BE SHORT.
ive most likely done this bingo w akira before but that wouldve probably been like. Over a year ago. so the statute of limitations is up i can do it again. or whatever. He’s the most fish love me women fear me fucker ever.
IVE SAID MANY THINGS ABT AKIRA IN MY LIFE SO IM GONNA ZOOM IN ON THE MARY SUE THINTG BC ITS REALLY FUNNY……. he just. Has a litany of whatever skills the writers need or want him to have at any given time. he can dance like he can PROPERLY dance. he can learn anything. and quick too,. I think he’s allowed this. Good for him. It’s really funny. He’s good at everything he tries to do and he tries to do a lot of things so he’s good at a lot of things. You need some random hyperspecific skill for something? He ABSOLUTELY has got you covered. he probably knows embroidery. he doesn’t know how to repair a motorcycle but he could probably just do it if he tried. this is. an exaggeration probably but again it’s funny. He can do whatever he wants forever. and he wants to do everything. Akira would build an entire house by himself if he needed to
i have physically not been able to stop thinking abt that tweet that goes “Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake will be rated TV-14.” “THEYRE GOING TO FUCKING KILL HIJM”
chronically obsessed with this guy can you believe we are actually going to see him again on television. He could actually do nothing and id probably still be clapping and cheering. World’s silliest man has the most absurdly terrible luck in the world, survives nuclear apocalypse in the worst way possible, develops mental illness. born to be a funny nerd forced to struggle in agony for the sake of the 1 other survivor he found who was his only reason to live. Almost everyone this man👆knows is dead and everything familiar to him is gone. except his jacket i guess. hes weirdly attached to that outfit. Its the autism i guess. his idea of swearing is saying breadballs

LMAOO dw it’s just part of your character development that’s honestly really funny (the way that you always find crazy people around you is also kinda crazy LMAO not even kidding you really did get the “it’s for the plot/character development” treatment
So real it’s definitely not ALL animanga but you can tell there’s some that just let the art or style carry actually I think you bring up a really good test though!! Like if you can co very it into a light novel and have it still be good then you know there’s at least some substance beyond just the visual effects…omg the jjk discourse about the female cast fr irks me like guys even maki is NOT developed enough like she fr is always just alluded to as tojis copy so??? Bro angel/hana’s treatment was actually foul I’m ngl I barely even remembered her until I saw her in the second to last chapter and immediately face palmed like bro why…..but yeah jjk is definitely not AWFUL awful but not as peak as everyone screams about
Oh definitely orv cast is developed and actually relevant also yess i love the platonic relationships and dynamics!!! Kdj and hsy are so funny LMAO I love seeing that kinda found family/platonic connection with kdj and co.
LMAOO so real like there’s chronically online but then there’s an even more extreme where it’s really “do you ever see the sun” but speaking of that post you reblogged made me giggle “are you pro or anti ship” “I have a life” LMAOOOOOOOO so real like it’s really not that deep guys
DDHSHS people on wattpad fr cannot handle reader not being the Mary Sue ultimate it girl with a reverse harem also to the people saying it’s perfect except the OCs bro it wouldn’t be the same without the ocs like let’s be real please and yeah like ESPECIALLY since it’s not even a commission of any sorts maybe you were just posting for the sake of being able to read it all through wp formatting and platform too, why people have the audacity to actually spew shit like that is beyond me like ok it’s not your story though??? And you really took the effort of writing out a comment to say this it’s much faster to just click the close tab button?? It’s like they comment thinking that you’ll go back and edit out all instances of your ocs??? Honestly disappearing off wp is such a mood
LMAO yeah I’ll definitely casually watch the anime because at least the animation usually has some cool scenes too but nothing all too serious after knowing what happens (actually I’m excited for the memes to come when the Yuta and cockroach curse get animated HAHA)
SHSGSHSHS it’s ok if you end up converting there’s a good chance that at some point I’d follow suit knowing us but the opposite sides of a war trope is actually so interesting I haven’t read anything with that in awhile?? Just generally not even on tumblr so many possibilities for adding in complexities and depth…wc Kunigami esp with the angst and the whole transformation of wc
REAL when kaneshiro fails yk Mira’s got you….still baffles me how yukis been sidelined (literally) sm WAIT AHAHAHAH im crying if it were otoya instead of yuki fwtkac i can imagine it where instead of reading looking at yukis account during that lunch scene she’s looking at otoyas profile and karasus like “bruh his hair looks like a fucking leek you like this one???” And then he enters the room where they play tag and he’s like “HOLY SHIT ITS THE LEEK DUDE YOU MF” while otoyas trying to think which of the fifty dates he went on karasus referring to
Ok good LMAO ik sometimes when people type on a keyboard they’re wrists get tired which is why the buy wristpads so jic that was you I didn’t wanna be making you type a whole essay response like normal LOL WAIT GAHAHAH the recent one where sae goes “this goal is still lukewarm” and literally has the whole genie looking trail this is too good
LMAO I’m gonna be honest most of the media I consume usually isn’t for the romance factor anyways like I usually watch kdramas after seeing like a cliffhanger betrayal/dramatic moment so I don’t even mind that it’s not super romantic LOL I agree having some crack shenanigans content is good it balances out the angst and romance
LMAOOOO noted I will take this calibration into account in the future o7 but YEAHHHH PURSUIT very hype
- Karasu anon
PLEASEEE i have made so many opps in my life and honestly i know there’s a saying that if you make enemies out of a lot of people you’re the problem but i really don’t think i am?? like i always try to self reflect and i definitely have been villainous in the past as has everyone but there’s a startling amount of people that dislike me for dumb reasons JHSFSD omg it’s so bad
whenever i think of dropping someone i’m like oh was i the bad person in this situation but being objective i hardly am 😭 this girl i think was just really jealous of me and so took the opportunity to put me down at any opportunity (she was also lowkey islamophobic and as almost half of my family is muslim i did not find her jokes terribly funny) and she was also one of the ones that like if i liked a guy she was suddenly OBSESSED with him meanwhile they wouldn’t even know who she was?? like she’d go up and talk to whatever guy i idly said was cute and they’d literally be like “who are you lol” 😰 there’s a lot of weird stuff w her she’s also HUGE into jjk and jjk x readers so i’ve always been terrified she’ll find my account hence why i don’t ever do face reveals or post pictures of things she might recognize (like my dogs…we had already stopped being friends by the time i started riding cloudie so i’m not scared of posting him) she only ever read on ao3 and didn’t try to figure out tumblr + she liked gojo choso and nanami none of whom i’ve written for so i probably would be safe but it’s still a thought in the back of my mind…anyways…
RIGHT like can you make a light novel out of this?? then it’s probably good…i think blue lock is a good counterexample actually where the story is very much so enhanced by the visuals because it’s a sport animanga but i think the sports genre is a little exempt from that test because who wants to read about sports KFHSD idk if that makes sense ANYWAYS everyone always says that jjk’s female cast is good as if not sexualized automatically equals well written…like yes gege did more for them in the sense that they were at least mostly covered up but that’s about where he began and ended 😭 BRO HANA GET BEHIND ME the way everyone hates her too i honestly just wish she got better treatment back when i was into jjk i LOVED her i honestly could write an entire essay about how i would’ve preferred she be written (like i did w kuni and yuki) but tbh the story started going downhill shortly after her introduction so idek where i’d start…suffice to say i would’ve had her be alluded to much earlier, not had her be obsessed with megumi (i think a romance between them could’ve been thematically and visually very lovely but NOT how it was handled and not given the fanbase jjk has), and expanded on the angel vs sukuna beef especially how that might’ve impacted the hana and yuji dynamic 😩 i think gege had the same problem as kaneshiro where there’s just too many characters but unlike bllk, there’s a much more expansive world in jjk too and that would’ve allowed for in depth exploration of more characters without slowing the story terribly if only that was a consideration yk
i don’t think jjk is horrible either!! there are a lot of things i enjoyed about it and i wouldn’t say it’s the worst thing to come out ever — it also suffers from having such a large fanbase that people are going to be disappointed no matter what direction gege goes in, so i have to give him that; however, agree, it’s not as peak as everyone says it is, and i think it’s fanbase would do well to recognize it for what it is (a normal shounen with slightly more gore but also with the regular pitfalls of the genre) sometimes i think the ending wouldn’t have been as disappointing if it hadn’t been hyped into smth beyond what it actually is yk 🤔 and honestly i don’t think it’s a failure of jjk to be that LMAO blue lock is very much so in that category and i still love that!! mostly because it is self aware and doesn’t try to do more than it has the capability for…instead it takes genre conventions and works inside them/expands on them (ego vs teamwork, the backstories of characters like snuffy) to maximize its impact?? idk if that makes sense HAHA like at the end of the day kaneshiro included anri’s hip waist bust measurements in the egoist bible and she’s also the only somewhat main female character so he’s not trying to beat the bad female cast allegations whatsoever he fr just threw chigiri in and called it a day but it works?? because he didn’t sit and say “hm how can we defy everyone’s expectations and astound the world” he was just like “ok soccer manga time”
I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ARE SO PRESSED ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE’S SHIPS like i literally do NOT care i ship zero characters it absolutely does not matter to me…only ships that are important are nagimira, miraeita, and tabimira otherwise idgaf /j fr though like how hard is it to just scroll and ignore when you don’t like smth 😰 also the entire school of thought (mostly from 15> year olds) that you should just stop engaging in fandom or liking characters or whatever after the ripe elderly age of 20 is SO FUNNY but also insane like who do you think is writing the fics you enjoy?? i have many thoughts on it that would get me cancelled but to me the line is like “okay if the mangaka/anime studio drew the exact same character and said they were 20 would i believe them?? if so it’s whatever if not that’s a little weird” for example when i was a kid watching indigo league i liked gary oak LMAOOO but now i wouldn’t like him because he very obviously looks like a kid yk?? but there is functionally no difference in the way that megumi, inumaki, and ino from jjk are drawn despite them all being wildly different ages it’s truly just arbitrary and in my experience a lot of shounen is just adults writing stories about other adults and then making them be “in high school” to appeal to their target audience and make their characters be more relatable to high school boys aka the main readers 😭 anyways at the end of the day people like to police stuff like that a lot so i don’t really share my thoughts on it but it really is just live and let live i promise you whatever character you’re defending does NOT care that people are writing fics about them they are literally just lines on a page…
PEOPLE ON WATTPAD ARE INSANEEEE bro (related to the earlier point) it’s the same people that complain about adults liking characters that start spamming the most insanely foul sexual things at the age of thirteen like how do you even know what any of those words mean?? forget about saving yuta okkotsu from anne at accounting who likes to read fics about him after work SAVE HIM FROM THE TWEEN FANGIRLS THAT WOULD GET HIS ASS ARRESTED ‼️ since we’re applying irl morals to fiction and all it very much so is illegal the other way too 😭 anyways yeah they always have smth to complain about like if y/n isn’t a reverse harem lead with every single guy at her feet, every power in the world, cringy “cold” personality where she’s uber strong and tells people to commit, and isn’t lame asf they go insane?? people complain in the early chapters of pomegranate ink that it’s “embarrassing” how reliant the reader is on noritoshi and how she’s always sucking up to him…like hmm…let’s apply some critical thinking here…why would she (who’s been told her entire life that she’s good for nothing but bearing heirs, has been essentially locked in her room for her whole childhood, is considered “worthless” because she didn’t inherit her family’s powers, and was almost married off to NAOYA ZENIN) be grateful to the one man who allowed her to have her own agency and treated her like an equal??? why would she be unsure in herself?? why would she ask for help constantly and think she’s weak??? also when they complain about her being weak omg please this story is 200k words i’m sorry she doesn’t start off strong but that would literally be so boringgggg it’s all about the slow development!! by the end of the story she’s brought someone back to life, is a grade sorcerer, defeats a special grade curse (because lbr she could’ve gone all of the way and killed jogo if it weren’t for plot needing him to be around longer), takes control of her ENTIRE CLAN, talks shit to sukuna’s face and then is instrumental in his defeat COME ONNNN SHE’S NOT WEAK FOREVER GIVE HER TIME she’s been abused for years it’ll take her a sec!! and speaking of abuse don’t get me started on the way they talk about reader’s mother LFKJHSDLKFJ they fr act like she’s the true villain when she’s in no better of a situation than reader 😭 actually things are worse for her because she has no one but her daughter left and her relationship with reader only just starts healing in pomegranate…god forbid we have complex female characters though!!
HELP if i convert to itoshism i’m dragging you down with me i can’t do it alone!! and i think opposite sides of a war necessitates writing a conflict that isn’t black and white (or else one of the characters would be evil and that’s usually looked down upon) hence why most authors steer clear as that can be difficult to do without making any one side into a villain HAHAHA maybe one day i’ll tackle the challenge again!! believe it or not i have done so previously in ship in the harbor and ig i did it well enough people seemed to like it…who knows LMAO
PLEASE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING like fwtkac reader posts a picture of herself and otoya on a date and karasu swipes up on the story with an entire paragraph about how her new boyfriend is ugly horrendous hideous nasty fresh out of the swamp and whatever other insults fwtkac bestie came up with meanwhile reader is just like ?? your hair can be measured with a protractor ?? LSKFHSDKFJH omg there would fr be no tabieita it would be tabiken and then otoya would just be there because karasu will never forgive the “shrek lookalike” that almost stole his girl…wait that reminds me that according to hiori fwtkac reader is the only girl karasu follows on social media??? idk but that’s making me laugh rn because i think i wrote that he’s friends with all of reader’s friend group but he’s just so loyal to this girl who absolutely despises him that he won’t follow any other females but her 😭 honestly for all of her academic genius looking back fwtkac reader is so dumb because how did she not read between the lines there…
HAHA DW i’m all good!! i’ve recently begun responding to your asks on my ipad instead of my iphone which is why my responses have gotten exponentially longer and less emoji riddled LMAOO so it’s been chill!! responding on my ipad also means no random glitching out since i’m doing it on the website which auto saves drafts iirc so double win fr
LMAOO if you do end up watching it lmk how it goes!! and yeahhh if i’m ever going to go on a long hiatus i’ll make it explicitly clear like you will be able to tell without question that i’m gone otherwise it’s probably just me being silly HAHAH anyways this ended up being a bunch of random unrelated rants i’m sorry 😭

Head Start at Birth - Ch. 21-30
The mediocrity continues! I feel like I've read newspaper funnies with higher stakes than this plot. Nothing bad ever really happens to the main characters and they always look/act pristine. The character writing is giving Mary Sue/Gary Stu vibes. I wonder if I would like this back in middle school or if I'd have enough brain cells to recognize its blandness?
Ch. 21
Lilia figures out a way to use magic without any magic energy (thanks to Toma). So now she's fulfilled her goal of allowing Elrich to use magic.
I'm not really emotionally invested at all at this point btw. Everything is so bland (especially Elrich who is just like "perfect boyfriend") that how could I be?
Ch. 22
It feels kind of lazy that the bird gets a cool human form and the dragon just gets to be blue!Lilia :/
More random plot happenings...this time the King is under attack and they're asking Lilia to help. Again with the "chosen one" BS.
Ch. 23
I feel like they totally ripped off the "butler attacks with steak knives" thing from Black Butler. Can't get nothin' past a veteran weeb!
Weirdly I feel like this manga could benefit from more characters. Yeslar and Reslar (Lilia's dragon and bird companions) get way too much screentime. They're so boring lol
Ch. 24
Just when I complain about Lilia's spirits they introduce...even more spirits! Why did they just reveal that Toma had spirits outta nowhere like that?
Reslar freaking out at the faerie seemed a little overblown and out of character (what little character Reslar has). I think Lilia and Elrich should have scolded her instead of just distracting her :/
Ch. 25
I gotta admit, the Sage title is pretty badass. And it looks like she gets access to some fancy library/archive? Hell yeah.
I had the though of "instead of pursuing the invention of the camera via magic why doesn't she just try recreating the non-magical engineering it takes to develop a camera?" But then I was like...wait...I have no idea how a camera works. Also, she was just an otaku in her previous life so she wouldn't have that knowledge either.
Elrich seemed low key jealous that his fiance is more impressive than him. Hopefully those feelings don't turn ugly. (Who am I kidding? This manga has no stakes whatsoever).
Lilia's new ribbons are suuuper cute. As I've said before, this manga at least has eye candy if nothing else.
Ch. 26
Can't decide if this chapter was wholesome or creepy. All these old men freaking out over Lilia with grandfatherly love. I guess it's just not a dynamic you see very often lol
Again we have the whole "MC is the super special chosen one who is smarter than everyone in their new world" vibes 😑
While I relate to Lilia being somewhat introverted, I do think she could have been a little nicer to the sages after they invited her so many times. It also felt weird to me that she didn't have the "wait, maybe this could further my research" revelation sooner.
Ch. 27
The age gap relationship stuff combined with the ultra girly aesthetic is kinda giving me UsagixMamoru from Sailor Moon. Not saying that makes it okay, just that this is pretty common with shoujo I guess.
"I like to carry you" is creepy (AKA she's so young you can carry her, dude >:/) but also...I wish I could be carried places lol. Seems really nice.
Lilia's "I should rely on others more" revelation is good, especially since it goes against the aforementioned "OP MC is better than everyone" vibes. I much rather her see her working with the community than just dominating everyone.
Ch. 28
Woah this one was so short? (Yet it cost the same amount, go figure -_-)
I almost thought there was another time skip since Isaac looked so mature, but nope! Zac is a cool nickname for the name Isaac
Suuuuper contrived miscommunication cliche -sigh- weak
Ch. 29
Okay, not gonna lie, that was pretty romantic. She's still too young to be smooching him though lol. (The "become my family" line got me. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing 😭)
Lilia unlocks some kind of new teleport power and they make it all ominous for whatever reason?
King is sus. I wonder if he's going to try and swoop in and have someone else marry Lilia?
Ch. 30
I was completely wrong about the king, they just keep doing these ominous cliff hangers that amount to nothing. It's pretty frustrating.
Lol back to this manga being absolutely zero stakes. They threatened to take Elrich away but were then like "sike, he doesn't have to go!" This is very "makes it easy" story telling.
They had a "The End" fake out...wish it was real.
The writing keeps pointing out how young Lilia is and how it's weird she's engaged to be married (actually married as of this chapter). If you think it's so weird, why did you write it!? No one is forcing you to write about a married 9 year old! -sigh-

The Throne of Ao Retrospective
I'm not going to talk about major major spoilery details, but lots of meta spoilers and some text spoilers ahead for the novel The Throne of Ao by Zero Angel (me).
My first novel, The Throne of Ao, was meant to be this grand kick-off of its world, sure, but more than that, it was a rejection of cynicism. It was about the good in trying. It was about hope overcoming the greatest of despair, even when you know failure—ultimate failure at that—more than you know success.
It was a rejection of misanthropy.
There was more to it of course. There was the idea of being a frog in a well and taking steps onto the stage of the wider world; of how competition with others can inspire you to greater heights; of the unfairness of disease and war; of growing apart from your friends; of the loneliness of talent; of mutual jealousy.
But the overwhelming theme through it all was even if you fail, it is better to try and fail again than it is to give in, than it is to give up, and, in the worst case, than it is to die.
For me, Throne was a pledge to keep trying.
When I wrote it, the theme was second to the events of the story that were happening. I didn't have it planned out that Val would fail in some way and continue failing and continue getting better (better at what?) and continue trying. The theme developed more as Val's response to Uri than anything else.
Of course Uri is going to be a cynical jerk in the face of tragedy, how else could he rationalize his "great talent" not being able to change the world? Then there's Val who may be well-liked but could never do what Uri could. Of course he isn't going to accept nothing can be done. No matter how bad things get, they can get better. Part of it is ignorance, yeah, but part of it is seeing things get better even when someone as talentless as he is being the one trying.
As powerful as Uriel was, he was well aware he couldn't move the world (at least back then). As powerless as Val was, he kept building up dust until it became a mountain. Uriel never met his match (I mean, antimagick was rough, sure). Val always had a height unreached to strive for; Val always had Uri.
Of course, their first big failure in the novel arguably ended much worse as a result of their trying than if they hadn't done anything. While Uri turns inward after this, internalizing the failure and feeling foolish for even trying, Val reaches out, all the while wearing his failure on his chest.
But the two kept clashing heads. Uriel doing his best to save a single person and Val trying to save everyone within reach. Uriel's refrain of, "You can't save everyone" was as much his bitterness and jealousy at Val trying to save everyone (and at his own weakness) as it was his promise to focus on saving the one person he cared the most about.
They both failed.
The theme of continuing to try after failing was inevitable with there being no way both could succeed.
It's difficult for me to read ToA nowadays. I have had the next two books outlined for something like ten years at this point. I've written expansions and extra chapters and character examinations of the first book, too.
I still love it. My mind still goes to that world. I could write endlessly in it. There are not enough words in the universe to ever complete that world. I dream of releasing more. Side stories, prequels, day-in-the-life quirky little whatevers.
I imagine some people see Val as a Mary Sue. Or at least as an author stand-in if not someone overly-competent. But no. He's just someone who cares and tries.
I mean, I created every character and there is some part of me in all of them. Val, Uri, Maryl, Byrea… They all live in me and they all grew from me.
But the one closest to me, the one I recognize the most, is the misanthrope, Uriel. The one who was more consumed with their rage, jealousy, and loneliness—in spite of having such a good friend—that it only pushed them further apart, more alone… Only made them more disbelieving that they could even be the same species. The one who punishes themself for not being perfect, who self-sabotages and gives in.
By writing Val—really, by writing the entire novel—it helped me hold on to faith and belief in humanity.
Val loses everything. Everything. But he keeps going, he keeps growing. He keeps trying. And sometimes he even is able to make a difference. Sometimes he saves some of the people he tries to save. Sometimes he saves a princess that at least stalls a war. Sometimes he finds a magickal plant that can end a plague even if it can't cure cancer. Who even puts their all into trying to cure cancer? In a fantasy novel I mean.
I don't know how he does it—that nonsense about getting up one more time than you fall.
Hope feels more cruel than anything. Despair makes sense. The weight of systemic injustice coupled with random tragedy is impossible to bear. Loneliness is overpowering.
I don't know how he does it.
I mean, I guess it's fiction. He does it because that's how he's designed.
But I've never felt like I was in control of what the characters do. I might set the stage and balance the scales against them, but once they are created I'm waiting to see what they'll do next.
And he kept getting up.
He lost everything. What are you even fighting for at that point? Why are you trying when you know there's no win-condition? When it will never end and there will always be more pain, more suffering, more tragedy and despair?
I finished writing ToA while teaching. So much coffee. I wrote a huge chunk of the actual text in a Barnes & Noble Café. My teaching career ended a few years ago in 2020. I have time now. I still have coffee, though now it's made by me.
I don't have hope.
I don't know how to deal with the emotions Val makes me feel in telling his story.
People die … And you just try more? …Try harder? Try different? You keep living?
How do you keep going? How does anyone keep going?
Throne was my pledge to not just keep trying but to believe in people and have faith in others. How much of not being able to write what comes next is because of the shame and guilt I feel in failing that pledge. Continuing to fail that pledge. Staying down. Surviving through the old despair and unwilling to try and feel new despair.
I'm full up on despair.
Knowing he's going to fail and trying anyway. What the fuck. I can't even call him a sweet summer child because his life has most definitely not been summery.
I guess he's meant to be aspirational lol.
I'd like to hope I could be like him (at least in that respect). I just don't know. I mean, I'm still alive. Some part of me hasn't given up. I just don't know.
I don't know if I can try again. Don't know if I can keep trying. I guess where I am is being willing to try to try.

All right, it seems like I’ve got a lot of understanding and rational people who responded to my earlier inquiry about making a Claire criticism post. So I’m gonna go ahead and do it, since this is something that’s sat in my mind every time a new installment of the ToA series came out.
SO BIG DISCLAIMER BECAUSE I WANT EVERYONE TO READ THIS BEFORE ANYONE GETS MAD AT ME:
THIS IS ALL MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION. I MIGHT BE PHRASING THIS POST LIKE IT’S AN ABSOLUTE, BUT IT’S NOT, IT’S ALL ISSUES I PERSONALLY FEEL WITH CLAIRE’S CHARACTER. SO IF YOU LIKE CLAIRE, THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK OR ME TELLING YOU YOU’RE WRONG ABOUT SOMETHING/CAN’T LIKE CLAIRE.
Now that I think I’ve got that out of the way, I wanna jump into the actual post of why I’ve never really liked Claire’s character.
If we’re being really really REALLY honest... I think the issue is mostly based off of “The writers didn’t know how to write Claire”. I’ve felt like every character in Trollhunters (specifically Trollhunters, we don’t talk about 3Below and while Wizards was pretty positive overall, that was also a lot of hit or miss, and that series plays even more into why I don’t like Claire) was executed pretty well to fulfill their roles as characters or to be compelling and pretty easy to grasp their personalities.
Except Claire.
Personality issues:
Her character’s inconsistent and flip-flops. To start off, her intro in the series is just “pretty girl that Jim likes”. We get the promising sense that she has some non-conforming interests at first, as she’s advertising try-outs for the play, but that’s just lifted from the Trollhunters book and we never see any interest in theater arts from Claire ever again after that. Her hair (and I’m sorry but I hate her hair with all the stupid hairclips in the front, it’s so distracting and it looks dumb) with the streak in it and the skull shirt she wears makes you assume she’s somewhat rebellious, maybe kind of punk, but she’s a straight-A trouble-free student who’s apparently popular with everyone, and helps her mom out with campaigning for her political career. There’s really nothing to her personality that shows itself consistently, besides the Papa Skull interest.
And then there’s how badly her character and personality was executed at first; When Steve’s about to beat up Jim, she tries to step in but gets shoved back. Great! She has a sense of right and wrong and she’ll stand up for others. But then later on, she scolds Jim for the crime of... standing up for himself? Which sends a really bad message that she’d have rather had Jim publicly humiliate himself and/or possibly get beat up. Then later she’s willing to go to a Papa Skull concert with the same guy who shoved her. That’s incredibly weak character right there.
She starts to show some more positive character when after getting mad at Jim for trashing the house, she puts two and two together and realizes something’s off, but then she just... sneaks into his house like a weirdo, even though nothing about her character suggests that she’d do something like that and she has no real reason besides “Jim wasn’t straightforward about the party”; it’s not something a normal person would do or what SHE would do given her current character development. And then this one’s a smaller gripe, but I hated her scoff in Wizards when the tournament was going on and the guards didn’t let her in, she goes “Ugh, boys’ club!”. UH HELLO, YOU IDIOT. THERE WERE FEMALE GUARDS CLEARLY EMPLOYED IN ARTHUR’S SERVICE. HELL, THE GUARD THAT BULLAR ATE WAS A FEMALE GUARD. GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND STOP PRETENDING LIKE YOU’RE BEING SLIGHTED BECAUSE YOU’RE A GIRL. YOU WERE CONSIDERED A CIVILIAN TRYING TO ENTER A TOURNAMENT FOR TRAINED KNIGHTS.
Now past all the character inconsistencies in those first thirteen-ish episodes, the second issue I have with Claire’s character is that she teeters pretty dangerously into Mary Sue territory. Everyone (I was almost gonna say “who isn’t a major villain” but EVEN MORGANA ends up liking her. So MOSTLY everyone) who isn’t a main antagonist ends up liking Claire in some way. Steve the bully? Tries to date her. Mary, whom she said she wasn’t really close friends with? Is friends with her and even has her number. Freaking VENDEL, the grumpiest character in the show, only has to hear her talk in Troll and he immediately likes her without her having to earn his trust (which also she just... never uses Troll again. Sure is convenient that she learned to speak fluent Troll just for one scene and one character to like her). Morgana takes a liking to her. Compare that to how hard Jim had to work to gain the trust of others: His bond with Draal, learning to prove himself to Vendel, engaging with Nomura in prison and befriending her. She too easily assimilates with other characters; I’d have less issues if she had to work like Jim did, but the only time she does is with NotEnrique.
Skills and abilities don’t feel earned or consistent:
And then the whole thing with her powers and her physical abilities. It was never explained in the show how she actually obtained innate magic powers not connected to the Shadow Staff itself (And no, if you have to explain it on Twitter as a writer, that’s not good writing, that’s forcing your audience to play detective). She’s just all of a sudden doing awfully-convenient high-level magic in the first two episodes (or maybe three, whenever she created that shadow-cover for Jim and the others to escape.) without explaining HOW she had got those powers, and then she performs it perfectly whenever the plot needs it (She’s literally shown to be more powerful than Merlin, how stupid is that?). Remember in the movie where everyone was like “Oh no Claire, don’t use your powers because it could hurt you!” and she does anyways and she faints for like three seconds and then has no other physical repercussions? Or how she’s somehow MORE capable than Jim when it comes to fighting, like how in the Chinese Trollmarket she manages to swipe one of the other troll’s weapons, which has an entirely different weight and size to her shadow staff and probably required extensive training, and she just uses it flawlessly to fight? The only times Claire really fails are when the plot calls for it.
Plot can’t happen without her:
And finally, she hijacks the plot constantly, more than her character should, and has more importance placed on her role in the story than anyone else. Even Blinky. She even took over the plot for Wizards, which was supposed to be Douxie’s story and Douxie’s character-focus. The poor guy took a backseat to his own story because the plot relied on Claire to move forward, literally nothing could be done without her. And I mentioned it before but even though Douxie’s character still managed to get enough development, it was hardly enough because Claire hogged up so much screen-time focusing on HER and HER magic development and HER relationship with Morgana over Douxie and HIS magic development and HIS relationship with Merlin.
And also the fact that it’s Claire who ends up either saving the day or taking priority over the others. Who was the one who defeated Morgana in Trollhunters? Claire. Who brought Jim back to life as a human, despite the fact that even Merlin stated it was impossible for him to make Jim a human again? Claire. Who was it that Jim made sure to establish his relationship with, but not anyone else? CLAIRE. That ending in the movie where he doesn’t seem to care about his relationship with Blinky, Draal, Strickler, etc, but oh we’ve GOTTA have his girlfriend!
Overall, even typing this, I don’t think it’s her fault even though I hate her character; it’s the writers’ fault for doing such a sloppy and inconsistent job because she’s boiled down to just a “girl empowerment”. Because in the book, Claire Fontaine is AWESOME. She’s a Scot descended from a warrior lineage which actually explains why she has weapon capabilities, she’s explained that she’s not really a “popular girl” but she’s super confident in herself and doesn’t really care what others think, and that’s what Jim finds charming about her, and she rips Steve a new one after hearing that he’s just trying to charm her to piss off Jim.
But Claire Nunez is a mess of a poorly executed character. And again, I blame the writers because I think Claire could have been great if they knew what they were doing with her and made her balanced.
#Trollhunters#Tales of Arcadia#Claire Nunez Criticism#Anti Claire#I feel like the whole issue with Claire was that the writers wanted to make their 'strong woman' character but executed it in the worst way#Because Claire isn't consistent and she sure as hell isn't balanced#It's funny; You know who I feel like was the actually strong female character in the show?#Well besides Nomura because I personally adore her but#The strongest female character in Trollhunters is Barbara#Her character actually blends well and it's easy to grasp; She's a naturally kind and nurturing person with a tendency to help others#So she's a doctor; and she's hard-working and does her best as a single mom#But that being said she's still very strong-willed and doesn't just step back; she's a rule enforcer and when Jim's sneaking out#She lays down the law#And it's even pretty clear that she wanted nothing to do with Strickler after she realized he was only using her (at first) to get to Jim#If you ask me I think Barbara was the true female empowerment of Trollhunters. Not Claire. Not Aja. Barbara#But yeah I've been sitting on this for like... five or six years now so it feels good to get this criticism off my chest

5 Anti LO Asks
(Note: All of these asks are before episode 206 (Season 2 finale) so some may be dated.) 1. fastpass spoilers everyone who says persephone is just y/n at this point is right. she's an unsympathetic asshole (chasing a dude in a relationship and trying to dodge punishment), every man wants her, nothing is really her fault (introducing eris was so fucking cheap), and after zeus told her about his trauma she was incredibly callous about it. the worst part is how RS claims she isn't a mary sue and how the readers want persephone coddled. i honestly believe some fans see themselves as persephone, so they take any of her L's as a personal attack. god.anyways zeus best character
2. LBR, she will NOT make Aphrodite/Hephaestus endgame, so what's left exactly? Aphrodite uses a disabled man to "get back" at Ares? Hephaestus is tricked into a loveless marriage so Aphrodite to get back at Ares? Maybe they can follow the mythology (bc RS won't follow any of it unless its to make a disabled man miserable and demonize a woman who isn't Persephone) and have Aphrodite cheating on him and then blame HIM for not being hot like Ares. This whole thing is so bad no matter how you cut it.
3. I think Persephone being labeled as Queen of The Underworld is just.. way too soon in the comic. Like, how we were used to seeing her, she didn't really have any life of her own. She had the role of Demeter's child, someone who studies and is in constant care, but that was dropped the moment she met Hades. ...and that's about it. Persephone going to the overworld would have been a great experience for the readers to see her own grown leadership. How she's not being hidden away by her mother or by Hades for her crimes, how she deals with them head first, how she compared to Demeter in terms of being a leader. Maybe she's more modern, or more creative, maybe she created new flowers based on the underworld or Olympus (since we haven't seen her grow anything else but pedals). Maybe during her depression, her failed duties are what casted winter onto mortals. But no, instead of seeing her development, seeing what she knows vs what she's learned along the way, the timeskip just added a bandaid and said that she's as flawless as ever. It's such a grab bag of a timeskip, we don't get to see that development or see Persephones struggles, we just have to trust that it's there, and it did in fact happen. The story could also pull a Thanos in the future, remember the whole 'child labor' excuse they randomly pulled to make him look like a hypocrite? No doubt in my mind that things will be made up for Persephone as she goes. One flaw will be countered by a memory we were never exposed to, making an endless utility belt. It's annoying, the one thing people read any H and P story for is to see Persephone develop into her own character. She's just so hollow that it's unreal
4. I mean, it’s not just the fact LO defenders have bad excuses. It’s just the fact any hand-wringing defense of it can easily be beaten with more than two seconds of thought. It doesn’t matter how many excuses you try, it’s still a poorly written, declined art comic full of poor pacing, silly fan service and retcons, and a treasure trove of misogynistic, racist, queerphobic, antisemitic, ableist, and classist tropes, and much more. The reason defense of it often fails is bc it’s just not that good
5. Tbh the fact you can take her name off of the comic and still think a man made it is a BAD thing. I know there are some people who try and defend it with some loopy logic of her “reclaiming” the misogynistic way women are depicted by men or w/e but that’s?? Not true?? The whole thing screams MALE power fantasy? If anything that’s worse, Rachel is a woman who is undoubtedly has dealt with misogyny yet is like “ok but it’s good when when a guy I like does it” which like no?? That’s still bad??
