We all have a hungry heart, and one of the things we hunger for is happiness. So as much as I possibly could, I stayed where I was happy.

An anonymous message we received as part of our project: part mental health advice, part poetry recommendation. In the background are three poems by Mary Oliver: 'Wild Geese', 'Egrets', and 'The Journey'.
Transcript:
To those not sleeping:
Obviously, get some sleep. If not sleep, rest. Read ‘To The Young Who Want To Die’. Sit down. Inhale. Exhale. Take your meds, if you have them. Text your friends, if you have them. If you don’t, you have one in me. Read ‘Let This Darkness Be A Bell Tower’. Feel how your breathing makes more space around you. Eat something. Feel something. If you don’t, then don’t beat yourself up about it. You have enough against you—you need yourself on your side. Read ‘Sorrow Is Not My Name’. There is a time for everything. Time for your tears, your turmoil, your tossing and turning. Time, too, to take another breath. To read ‘Tomorrow Is A Place.’ Tomorrow is a place I’d like to see you. See you living, see you reading ‘Wild Geese’. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile we both continue living and I get you hooked on Mary Oliver and you open your wings softly and step over every dark thing. In the meantime, read ‘In The Meantime’. Read ‘The Perfect Ease Of Grain’. Read ‘Instructions On Not Giving Up’. Say ‘fine, then, I’ll take it. I’ll take it all.’

for how many years have you gone through the house shutting the windows, while the rain was still five miles away and veering, o plum-colored clouds, to the north, away from you and you did not even know enough to be sorry, you were glad those silver sheets, with the occasional golden staple, were sweeping on, elsewhere, violent and electric and uncontrollable – and will you find yourself finally wanting to forget all enclosures, including the enclosure of yourself, o lonely leaf, and will you dash finally, frantically, to the windows and haul them open and lean out to the dark, silvered sky, to everything that is beyond capture, shouting i’m here, i’m here! now, now, now, now, now. - mary oliver, from the book of time

Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.
