the three BLACK WOMEN (mary jackson, katherine g. johnson, and dorothy vaughan) that changed astronomy and history.
mary jackson, an accomplished engineer, broke down barriers as the first african american woman to work as an engineer at NASA. her expertise and determination paved the way for future generations of women in the field.
katherine johnson, a brilliant mathematician, calculated the trajectory for john glenn's historic 1962 spaceflight, making her an invaluable asset to NASA's space task group. her calculations were pivotal in ensuring a successful mission
dorothy vaughan was a talented mathematician and the first african-american supervisor at NASA. she was instrumental in introducing computer programming skills to her colleagues, which played a significant role in advancing the space program.
through their dedication and groundbreaking achievements, mary jackson, katherine johnson, and dorothy vaughan left an indelible mark on history, proving that talent knows no boundaries, and that anyone, regardless of their background, can reach for the stars. their triumphs were celebrated in the 2016 film hidden figures, a personal favorite of mine.
i urge you all to read up on these magnificent women and their astronomical (no pun intended) impact on the world. celebrate and encourage black women in STEM. they are magical

A 75-year-old successful business man made a deal with the Devil to travel back into his past to the year 1910. He was upset to learn that despite looking 30 in the past physically he was still 75 and probably wouldn't live long enough to see his financial plans through. All his plans ended up as failures and he was barely able to return to the future with nothing to his name. Worse, due to alterations in his past, he was now a janitor and his former janitor was now the owner of his company. ("Of Late I Think of Cliffordville", The Twilight Zone, TV)

The shoulders of the women that we stand on are three American heroes; Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson. Without them, we would not know how to reach the stars.

Movie Review of Hidden Figures
I recently talked about the movie Hidden Figures for my class assignments, and I thought it would also be fun to review it. I watched this movie for the first time around the time it came out in 2016. It is a true story based on three African-American mathematician women who worked for NASA in the early 60s. The movie shows the racial and gender discrimination they face in their workplace and how they were never recognized for their amazing contributions to some crucial space missions. The three main women the movie was based on were Katherine Johnson, who calculated flight trajectories for John Glenn’s orbital flight along with many other amazing missions. Dorothy Vaughan was a mathematician and computer scientist who also became the first African-American supervisor for NASA. And Mary Jackson, who was an engineer and fought for her place to become the first African-American woman engineer at NASA.

There's a fabulous documentary about Hedy Lamarr called "Bombshell - the Hedy Lamarr Story"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I always remember having this fight with a random dude who claimed that ‘straight white men’ were the only true innovators. His prime example for this was the computer… the computer… THE COMPUTER!!! THE COM-PU-TER!!!
Alan Turing - Gay man and ‘father of computing’ Wren operating Bombe - The code cracking computers of the 2nd world war were entirely run by women Katherine Johnson - African American NASA mathematician and ‘Human computer’ Ada Lovelace - arguably the 1st computer programmer”
- Sacha Coward
Also Margaret Hamilton - NASA computer scientist who put the first man on the moon - an as-yet-unmatched feet of software engineering, here pictured beside the full source of that computer programme. #myhero
Grace Hopper - the woman that coined the term “bug”
