#notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

Ray Barretto & New World Spirit - “Work Song” Fiesta Picante: The Latin Jazz Party Collection Song released in 1994. Compilation released in 1997. Jazz / Latin Jazz
It’s difficult to imagine that there was ever a point in time in which jazz music, including Latin jazz, was without congas, but it was. And according to NPR, Ray Barretto was the first U.S.-born percussionist to integrate congas into jazz, having brought his drums to New York City jam sessions following an Army stint in postwar 40s Germany, which is where he initially learned to play. As a result of those jam sessions, before long, Barretto would become a member of Charlie Parker’s and then Tito Puente’s bands, forever solidifying himself as a conguero who was both equal parts jazz and Latin music.
A brief rundown of his career, provided by Encyclopedia Britannica, has more:
Ray Barretto, (Raymond Barretto), American percussionist and bandleader (born April 29, 1929, New York, N.Y.—died Feb. 17, 2006, Hackensack, N.J.), played conga drums on jazz albums and in Latin bands before he became one of the most popular bandleaders in salsa music. His strong sound and relaxed swing made him one of the first congueros (conga players) to blend gracefully with modern jazz, especially in popular 1950s and ’60s albums with Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Cannonball Adderley, and others. Barretto spent years with Latin bands, most notably with Tito Puente’s group from 1957 to 1961, before he scored his own hit single, “El Watusi” (1963). He went on to lead more than 50 albums and become musical director of the Fania All-Stars, a top 1970s salsa band. One of his albums with singer Celia Cruz, Ritmo en el corazón, won a 1990 Grammy Award. Later Barretto led the Latin jazz sextet New World Spirit.
Barretto’s New World Spirit band formed out of his disenchantment with what had become of Latin jazz by the early 90s. From an archived copy of Bernhard Castiglioni’s Drummerworld, which quotes Barretto:
"But while I had the privilege of working with Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Tito Puente, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades and other great musicians, there was a downside too. I discovered that after some 20 years with Fania I had become typecast as a 'Latin artist.' That turned out to be extremely limiting when I tried to interest jazz labels in signing me."
So, in a hunt for new opportunities, Barretto said goodbye to salsa, the genre he himself had played an integral role in fostering, and set out to do something different: take Latin music and bebop and fuse them together in a way he hadn’t done before. Throughout almost all of his life, Barretto had held a deep love for both types of music, and while his time with the Fania All Stars was legendary, it had also left him pigeonholed. He didn’t want to be merely just thought of as a Latin musician; he wanted to also be known more broadly as an accomplished jazz artist. From an early age, Barretto had been raised on a steady diet of both Duke Ellington and Arsenio Rodriguez (and many others, of course), and wanted a mix of those passions to be reflected in his own work.
In 1993, his idea was realized when New World Spirit was signed to Concord Picante, a Latin offshoot of the west coast juggernaut, Concord, and whose founding I posted about not all that long ago. It was on Picante that New World Spirit would release their first two albums, Ancestral Messages in ‘93 and Taboo in ‘94. They would deliver four more albums on different labels up until their final release in 2000.
Found on Taboo is a wonderful reworking of Nat Adderley’s 1960 jazz standard, “Work Song,” (also, check out this cover by a little-known 60s garage jazz-mod band from Michigan called The Quintette Plus, which I posted about a while back) which sees Barretto and his band giving the original song a heavy dose of Latin flair. While the percussion remains unmistakably Latin all throughout, it’s Hector Martignon’s piano, Adam Kolker’s sax, and Ray Vega’s trumpet that seem unwilling to choose a lane, resulting in a track that only someone like Ray Barretto could so effectively conceive of. The Latin percussion originally provides backing to a trio of traditional solos, first Vega, then Kolker, then Martignon, but around the song’s final third portion, all that jazz traditionalism is replaced entirely by a lively blend of Latin instrumentation, yielding a superb ending, initially led by Vega’s frenzied, high-pitched, squealing, climactic solo, and then dissipating with a much quieter few full band repeatings of “Work Song”’s famed refrain.
One of the godfathers of salsa music’s great attempts to transparently fuse Latin music with more traditional jazz.
