This is supposed to be a Halloween art, but I’m too late lmao
Tumblr media
I really like the corpse bride. However, I never meant to make Martha and Billy look like “lovers”, they’re just cosplaying or something like that.
By the way, I actually don’t see those too as a couple. Martha considers Billy to be her best and only friend, and Billy…Eh…It’s more complicated. Long story short: he’s a bastardƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ

This image of the Tennessee State University Tigerbelles track team at the Penn Relays with members [L-R] Willie B. White, Martha Hudson, Wilma Rudolph, and two unidentified women. Wilma Rudolph was one of the most accomplished track and field stars in history.
At the Olympic games in Rome, Italy in 1960, Rudolph won three gold medals while breaking world records in the 100, 200, and the relay. She was voted into the Black Athletes Hall of Fame in 1973 and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1974.
This photo from the 1950s was taken by famous Philadelphia photographer John W. Mosley at the Penn Relays. The first Penn Relay Race took place on April 21, 1895.

Owen's Age
In Martha's medical log, she states that Owen is 27 during the events of Reset. We're going to talk about why we should stop accepting that as canon and start referring to Owen as being 34 during Reset.
His birthday of February 14th is always constant and isn't something I dispute. We are given two dates for his year of birth, 1974 or 1980.
1980 is on screen in Reset and I believe Exit Wounds, as well as in text published after season two. The fact that this is well documented makes it hard to argue with, and yet I will.
1974 is only ever mentioned once, in an email that was written and published on the TW website alongside Dead Man Walking. Keep in mind that this would have been written before DMW aired, which suggests that 1980 wasn't in the script that the writers were given. A few days after airing, the date in the email was changed to 1980 to match what we saw on TV.
Let's take a quick look at a Owen timeline.
Born either 1974 or 1980.
Began training as a doctor in 1994. He would either be 14 or 20.
Late 2000/early 2001 he walked out on his college girlfriend in London. He would be either 20 or 26.
In March 2001, Owen is a qualified Doctor in Cardiff. He would be either 21 or 27.
Owen was employed by Cardiff General between at least 2000 and 2002. He would have been either 20-22 or 26-28.
Lucy Marmer is brought to Owen's attention in September 2001, six months after Owen qualified. Owen would be either 21 or 27.
Katie dies in 2005, which would make Owen either 25 or 31.
Owen is hired by Torchwood in 2006, making him either 26 or 32.
Reset is set after June 2008, making Owen either 28 or 34.
Having Owen be born in 1974 puts his timeline into some form of sense. It makes him a year older than Tosh, four years older than Gwen, and nine years older than Ianto, which sits well with the dynamics. He in no way feels five years younger than Tosh, two years younger than Gwen, and three years older than Ianto.
In addition, Burn himself is born in 1974 and I frankly don't think he looks six years younger than he actually is.
I will now take questions from the audience.

Since a lot of us seemed to be quite curious about Falk's costume and the funky bib thingy in Sinners of the Seven Seas, I went down a rabbit hole to find out what it actually is! Come with me on this journey!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Disclaimer: I will reference my learnings quite generalized, so I would urge you to do more research if you want to get into the nitty gritty! You could also shoot me a message if you want some more specific info or pointers or want to do a learn with me! Also feel free to correct me please!) I don't know a lot about vestments (ger.: liturgische Gewänder) yet, so it's time to find out the names first so I can do research more easily! His long, black dress is called a cassock or soutane (ger.: Soutane) and is mainly worn by catholic clergy, though some orthodox and some protestant churches wear this vestment too. His sash that he wears around his waist is called a cincture (ger.: Zingulum) and it's mainly worn by catholic clergy. It's also not the same thing as his funky shawl he wears in stage costume, that is called a stole (ger.: Stola). And now finally his bib! I'm frantically searching through the references of different Wikipedia pages by now until I find a PDF about costume research by Martha Bringemeier, 1974 and...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...it's called bands (ger.: Beffchen) and it's mainly worn by protestants today, but until somewhere in the 19th century it was also worn by catholics. Depending on the denomination of the protestants, the bands are sewn together (german reformists), split open and angled by 30° (lutherans and swiss reformists) or partly split (united churches). Since the information I found on bands was mainly focused on protestant ways to wear them (all white as opposed to black and white), the pictures I found of catholic black-and-white bands were all split in the middle, Falk's bands had weirdly angled edges and rounded corners AND since I had a bad fever, I asked my friends dad for help. He is a pastor and very interested in christian history, but he too was quite confused, so here came the last resort: Find out who made this costume!
Tumblr media
Aha!! Now that was easy. Kostüm Keiser? Time to google! Huh, well, seems they made a typo, I can only find Kostüm Kaiser from Switzerland - but their video production partner "VDPICTURES" is from Switzerland too, so that must be it! I sent them a mail with pictures attached, asked if it was their costume, if they had infos on the bands and since they have their own research library I also asked them if they can recommend a good book on vestments! And right the next day I was blessed with information by the very kind people behind Kostüm Kaiser: It's a pastor/priest vestment from their fund and the cassock as well as the cincture are catholic and are still worn like this today! The bands are catholic as well and (to their knowledge) were mainly worn like this in france in the 18th and 19th century. In french it's called "rabat".
Tumblr media
They couldn't tell me why Falk's bands were so non-rectangular, they said it could be an older production from their costume rental, but that there are engravings of french priests that show different shapes. (They didn't provide pictures, but the bands of french roman-catholics seem to vary a lot in general in these times) On a side note, they recommended me a really old book from their library, «Abbildungen aller geistlichen und weltlichen Orden» by Christian Friedrich Schwan from the late 18th century and I actually found it completely digitized! Click for old book It's in german, but feel free to shoot me a message/ an ask if you want some parts translated to learn more! (I can't translate the whole book, but if a costume is interesting to you, I can try to summarize the information on it for you!) Alright, thank you for coming on this little journey with me and big thanks to Kostüm Kaiser for the help!

“Seeing a Fassbinder retrospective is better than drugs, liquor and sex put together”. John Waters
Born on this day: inspired, despairing and uncompromising director, playwright, actor and turbulent New German cinema visionary, Rainer Werner Fassbinder (31 May 1945 – 10 June 1982) – a true titan of European art cinema. Expressions like “wunderkind,” “monstre sacré” and “enfant terrible” are all applicable here. All these decades later, his best films (off the top of my head, my favourites include Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974), Martha (1974), Fear of Fear (1975), Fox and His Friends (1975), In a Year of 13 Moons (1978), Veronika Voss (1982) and Querelle (1982)) still sting like a slap across the face. Fassbinder also elicited career-best performances from the crème de la crème of German actresses like Brigitte Mira, Margit Carstensen, Irm Hermann, Ingrid Caven, Hanna Schygulla, Barbara Valentin, Rosel Zech, Barbara Sukowa and Christiane Maybach. “Fassbinder had the reputation of being quite difficult to deal with in real life, but anyone who made as many films as his years on earth (especially if they’re all good) deserves the privilege of being a true monster,” John Waters concludes in his 1987 book Crackpot. “If Fassbinder ever got any sleep, maybe his genius would have evaporated.” Pictured: very cute young Fassbinder (before the drugs and alcoholism prematurely ravaged him) in the titular role in Fox and His Friends.

Megan Martha White (born December 10, 1974) is best known as the drummer and occasional singer for The White Stripes. The band began when they started playing bandmate Jack White’s drums on impulse and decided to form a band within two months. They called themselves the White Stripes because of Meg’s love for peppermint candy. They were popular in the Detroit local music scene before gaining national fame. Her drumming style has been praised for its skills and simplicity and has been up for debate. Meg is a steady drummer, nothing too flashyShe was nominated for various awards and has won four Grammy Awards. White calls herself “ very shy” and keeps a low profile. After White Stripes disbanded in 2011, White has not been active in the music industry.

please watch the argentine film si muero antes de despertar (1952) if you ever get the chance! it's the second part to another film, no abras nunca esa puerta, but you can watch it on its own. i found it very touching personally and i think that you would enjoy it, as well; fairytales, secrets and nightmares feature very heavily in it, plus the cinematography is beautiful. + the author of the story it's adapted from also wrote the story which was adapted into martha (1974), which i remembered you posting about a while ago! hope you're well, much love xoxo

On 17th May 1741 George Watson's Hospital School was opened in Edinburgh with 11 pupils.
The college was established when philanthropist George Watson, who was the Bank of Scotland’s first Chief Accountant, left his entire £12,000 fortune to found a school.
After his death in 1723 the Merchant Company of Edinburgh implemented the terms of his will, purchasing a piece of land near the Meadows and instructing a architect to design and build the school.
The foundation stone was laid on May 22, 1783, and the building completed in early 1741, with the first pupils welcomed to ‘George Watson’s Hospital’ in May of that year.
The first roll consisted of just 11 boys but that quickly increased to 86, with the school governers responsible for pupils until the age of 25, finding them apprenticeships or helping them pursue medicine and academia
The hospital school system was seen as a failure by the 1860s, leading the Merchant Company to re-establish George Watsons as an 800-capacity day school in 1870, selling the building to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and moving to the former Merchant Maiden Hospital building in Archibald Place.
A further expansion of the Royal Infirmary in 1924 led once again to the school building being sold and another move - this time to the site of Merchiston Castle School.
Watsonian James B Dunn won a competition to design the new school, which was completed in 1932 and opened by Prince George.
By this time there was also a separate George Watson’s Ladies College but the two merged into a single school 1974 which entered the record books as the as the largest co-educational school in Scotland, with a roll of over 2,400 pupils.
Former pupils include comedian Jack Docherty, politicial Sir Malcolm Rifkind, rugby stars Scott and Gavin Hastings, and BBC broadcast Martha Kearney.
