maybe it's because i'm finally one chapter away from finishing my huge super old 1917 fix-fic where blake survives and has a happy ending with will, but it got me thinking about the movie and will living after the events of it.

at the end of the film he's found enough strength and resolve to open his tin box and take out the picture of his family and look at them.

and that happened because of tom. the transference from tom to will, the pure determination and frantic need to finish the mission, shaped him. he did it for tom, because tom asked him, because tom picked him, because the bond they had.

and because of the love will had for tom. because "nothing is heavier than the dead body of someone you loved". the cherry blossoms clinging onto him while he drifted down the river. carrying him, one last time.

i'm thinking what if tom is this time the one will keeps in the tin box.

maybe one of tom's rings, a photo he may have gotten from tom's mom.

a secret, a breaking, bleeding heart in the tin. the one he loved in the trenches with such deep way that his wife cannot even begin to understand.

but she is curious. "what do you have in there?" she asks, when she catches will holding the tin box. not opening it. just weighing it in his hands. "what's in there?"

and will can't answer her. the return to the day-to-day life is harrowing, he does his best to cope with what he went through and what he saw. and tom died. died in his arms, and will held him through it.

he can't ever tell her how much tom meant to him. what he learnt because of him. how much he loved him.

then maybe perhaps years later when his daughters have grown, they find the tin box and curious, they open it. they find a ring and a faded photograph of a smiling young man with dark hair and light, crinkled eyes. tom blake, is written behind the photograph.

it speaks of love, longing and grief so vast they can't even comprehend it.

they won't ask.

it is will's personal thing, a heart he holds in secret.

something that took me some years to figure out is that desaturated colours are much easier to vary in hue because they are literally closer together

also the greys make your more saturated colours stand out more. if its all saturated then nothing really is
