mkay so i think martin is a really interesting character.

like, what was his fascination with gadgets? why not ask people for money instead of random gag items? we know he didn’t sell them, so, why?

it’s interesting!!

he played both sides of a system, risked himself in order to trick people, to.. get.. cool gadgets. thats. why?

i want to know how his brain works, i want to dissect him like a frog in a biology lab, i want to understand this man’s brain and how it works.

i also. i think it’s tragic that neither finn nor minerva will ever know why he left and finn will never truly know his dad. like, he’ll never know his dad liked gadgets, he’ll never know his dad was chaotic and silly (and a bit pathetic when it came to flirting, maybe it runs in the family). minerva will never know why he left her, why he took their child. she’ll never know what happened to her husband and what he was reduced to-

speaking of, why did that happen to him? what made him shift so drastically? brain damage? i… don’t think so.

i think he was lost for a while, slowly dissending into some kind of madness as he struggled to process what’d he’d gone through. he probably thoguht finn was dead, doomed to starve at sea or get eaten by some fish. his wife would never forgive him for letting thwir kid die, would she? so. he forgot. he shut it out as he slowly lost himself until he became the martin we know today

Book/Photographer research #1

The goal of a photojournalist is to take pictures that can speak for themselves, to create a story without using words. In the book “American Testimonies' ' published by Rotterdam in 2012, the photographer, Peter Martens takes this to a whole new level. Peter Martens was born in march of 1937, dedicating most of his life to his photographs up until his death in 1992. Martens was a Dutch photographer that pointed his work towards the harder things in life. Instead of focusing on the daily glamorous life of humans in America, he specified his photos towards the harsh, difficult, and sometimes disturbing realities of everyday life. Martens came to America several times during his life to capture the country and its “underdevelopment”. It was one of his favorite places to work, allowing him to capture the “confusion and lovelessness” which he regarded as normal characteristics of Western society.

The photography within the book “America's Testimony” is not like anything I have ever  seen before. The photos are not easy or enjoyable to look at. With nudity, murders, death, crime scenes, sickness, uncared for children, and so much more, Martens captured what seems to be the worst parts of American living. I guess this was his goal in the book, with wanting to focus on the unglamourous outcasts of America, specifically New York, his photography portrayed images that gave off deep dark emotion. He also adds to this emotion through shooting in black and white; the colors of his pictures add to the dramatic appeal of his photography by cutting out all forms of color; in other words, cutting out all forms of light and life. 

Being able to read Peter Martens book was very exciting. After studying up and researching the photographer I discovered that he is very unknown, some of his work never even got published and the ones that did were not published until years after his life ended. Although discovering him as an arctic was fascinating, his work did not bring the same feelings. Personally I did not enjoy the book “American Testimonies”. 

The effort Mertens put in to capture the aspects of life we don’t normally look at is greatly appreciated, but the images were very difficult to look at and comprehend. With living in America my entire life I have grown up on the idea of working hard for a successful life. This idea created a very organized and attractive lifestyle within my mind. Although I am aware that not everyone's life is like this, it is also very hard for me to look at any form of pain, hurt, death, and illnesses especially when children or any other vulnerable people are involved. Peter Martens did make me more aware of the world and some of the unseen struggles that are apparent, yet his photography was very disturbing and hard for me to look at/process.

LOCAL LEGENDS: Static Res

What To Expect: Ohio-via-Maryland rapper/producer Static Res has been steadily building a name for himself thanks to his willingness to attack any beat that comes his way and his refreshingly vulnerable take on songwriting. His delivery style is calculated and even-keeled, but make no mistake - his bars pack a punch thanks to his uncanny ability to put words to some of life’s most complex situations.

He finished off 2018 with the release of Be Good, a project that saw Res spitting over dreamy beats and reflecting on how much he’s grown from the experiences he’s had, both positive and negative, throughout the years. After remaining relatively quiet since the drop of the LP, he came back in a big way in 2019 with two slowed-down bangers in “Nostalgic” and “Zero.” The latter sees him “[strip] down to the fundamentals of his being over the soothing backdrop provided by [producer] EricDawns,” (Earmilk, 2019) and is another shining example of his personal, self-aware lyricism. Static Res is planning on dropping a new single titled “Purple” on Tuesday, May 21, and we’re planning on having it on repeat all next week. WILD CARD: Injury Reserve

What To Expect: Standing at the forefront of Arizona’s still emerging hip-hop scene is Injury Reserve, a ragtag trio of friends who are laying the foundation for what it means to make rap music using their instincts. There have been virtually no established acts from their part of the country thus far, so the group has had to put their DIY mentality into  overdrive time and time again while fine-tuning their brash, in-your-face style over the years. The IR team has always been one to take matters into their own hands when it comes to maintaining control over the artistic expression of their music; from recording their debut work, Live From The Dentist Office, in an actual dentist’s office to creating a slew of high-energy, low-budget videos to accompany all three of the singles they’ve put out in advance of the drop of their next effort, a self-titled album slated to come out this Friday on Loma Vista Recordings.

Each of the three members of Injury Reserve brings something different to the table. There’s Steppa T. Groggs, the elder statesmen who serves as a mentor to his groupmates and uses his mastery of wordplay to expertly tell a new story with each verse. Then there’s the always charismatic Ritchie With A T, the group’s undeniable spiritual leader, whose tight bars flow effortlessly over the trippy, sometimes anxiety-inducing beats of producer Parker Corey. Stereogum may have said it best in a March interview with the group, describing them as “three misfits who looked and sounded nothing like each other, carving out a hodgepodge discography with its own distinct contours.” Injury Reserve serves as a case study of what good can come to artists who stay true to themselves, and the release of the Injury Reserve album should serve as another captivating chapter in the story of the American Southwest’s first great experimental hip-hop collective.
