Congratulations to Nepal!
Here's a brief history leading up to today.
Nepal has tried to stamp out social discrimination ever since a decade-long Maoist rebellion ended in 2006 and the 239-year-old Hindu monarchy was dismantled in 2008.
In 2007, Nepal repealed laws against gay sex and introduced several laws which protected "gender and sexual minorities". The Supreme Court ruled later that year for the government to create laws to protect LGBTI rights, and for the government to form a committee to look into legalizing same-sex marriage. Successive governments failed to change the law on same-sex marriage.
A lesbian couple held a traditional Hindu marriage ceremony in 2011, but the marriage has no legal status in Nepal. More and more public parades and unofficial weddings started being held in Nepal.
A new constitution was adopted in 2015 which recognized LGBT rights as fundamental rights, and while it didn't specifically list same-sex marriage, it did list several other rights, such as being able to acquire a citizenship certificate according to one's gender identity.
In July 2017, Monica Shahi and Ramesh Nath, successfully registered their marriage. Shahi is a third gender person, with their sex recorded as "other" on their official identity documents. The Nepal Home Ministry said the marriage could be invalid.
In October 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that the government was wrong to deny a Visa to the American wife of a Nepalese citizen. The government argued it rejected the application since Nepal doesn't recognize same-sex marriages. The Supreme Court ruled that the law is as long as they have a valid marriage license, a foreigner who is married to a Nepali citizen is eligible for the Visa, the rules do not specify that the foreign national must be either same or opposite gender. Furthermore, it pointed to the Nepal constitution that an LGBT citizen is entitled to live life with dignity without discrimination.
March 2023, the Supreme Court ordered the government to recognize the marriage of a Nepali citizen and his German husband and to issue a spousal visa. It also directed the government to draft legislation for full marriage equality in Nepal
In June of 2023, the Supreme Court ordered the government to make necessary arrangements to temporarily create a separate register for marriages of "sexual minorities and non-traditional couples" until lawmakers come up with a new legal framework to uphold such unions permanently.
Nov 29, 2023, a same-sex couple officially registered their marriage

Same with Nepal. I’m Nepali and having a child out of wedlock remains taboo in our society. Afraid of social censure, unmarried women often choose to either abort the fetus (and prior to 2002, Nepal had strict anti-abortion laws which ensured not only the imprisonment of the pregnant women who seek abortion but also their family members) or if it’s too late, give the baby up for adoption. Those who choose to keep their babies are doubly punished. Nepali society questions the woman’s character and can go so far as socially ostracising her, and children born outside of marriage are denied legal documents such as birth certificates and citizenship, and it creates stateless children. Everything becomes much worse if the father is not in the picture. My parents never got married, and I still receive side eyes and sense the judgement that casts my mother and I in the roles of negative stereotypes (“loose women”) and somewhat enemies of the Nepali patriarchal society. My fiancé’s family literally refuse to meet me.
Either responding to THIS or THIS. Maybe both.
Geez, anon, that's gnarly and I'm sorry that that is happening. I don't know what to say really, and I admit I have my own bubble, thus the lack of words to really address this other than that's so unfair. Yeah it remains familiar to me, the slut shaming.

Nepal registers first official same-sex marriage in country
Nepal’s first same-sex marriage in the Himalayan country was registered in a village on Wednesday, officials and activists said.
It came five months after the Supreme Court had issued an interim order allowing such marriages in the largely conservative country.
The marriage between 36-year-old Ram Bahadur (Maya) Gurung, who was born male but identifies as female, and Surendra Pandey, 26, who was born and identifies as male, was formally registered at the Dordi rural municipality office in the Lumjung district in west Nepal, an official said. Pandey said in a phone interview:
“We are both very happy. Like us, all others in our community are happy too.”
The couple have been in a relationship for nine years and got married according to Hindu rituals in 2016 in the capital Kathmandu. Hem Raj Kafle, chief administrative officer of the Dordi rural municipality, said:
“We have issued the marriage registration certificate to the couple in consideration of the Supreme Court order and instructions from relevant government authorities.”

PROGRESS in East Asia
For the record, the only other countries it’s fully legal in in East Asia is Taiwan and Nepal.
Technically it’s not illegal to marry someone of the same sex in Japan or South Korea, however there are no legal precedents or procedures and even if you’re married somewhere else, your marriage certificate, at in Japan specifically, is immediately rendered “non binding” — meaning it’s effectively not legally recognized as a marriage certificate.
This applies whether you’re a resident or not, by the way. Even if you’re there on visa, your marriage certificate is pretty much null and void as soon as you step into the country.
South Korea is a little different; as long as you’re not a resident/citizen they might be willing to recognize your sanctioned protections granted to you elsewhere, but that’s entirely situational. If you’re a citizen or applying for citizenship though your marriage certificate becomes null as it’s not legally recognized there.
Of course no one in china can marry anybody without permission from the government, and there’s not a lot of clear data about that, but its regarded as “not illegal but not legal either” — technically it’s not against the law, nationally, (provincial rules nonwithstanding) but you’ll probably never be granted permission.
If only people understood how aggressively conservative most of Asia is. It’s a different, largely secular kind of conservatism but it’s extremely pervasive. Thailand has been a cultural leader in progressivism for a long time; they were one of the first Asian countries to legalize trans rights, and they’ve been at the cutting edge of a lot of cultural reforms. It’s taken a while, but people are finally able to legally marry their same sex spouse, something that’s been on the board for literally decades.
So glad to see some progress.
Y'ALL THAILAND APPROVED SAME SEX MARRIAGE AS OF 7 HOURS AGO!!!!!!!

How to Get a Certified Nepal Birth Certificate Translation
Determine What Type of Translation You Need If you need a certified Nepal birth certificate translation, the first step is determining what type of translation you need. Depending on the purpose of the translation, you may need a legal document or an accurate translation of the original document. If you require a professional translator to provide a legal document, it’s best to contact a translation agency or a professional translator directly. On the other hand, hiring a professional translator may not be necessary if you only need an English translation of the original document for personal use, such as for a bank statement or a visa application. In this case, you can ask a friend or family member who speaks English and Nepali to translate for you. Find a Qualified Translator When getting a certified Nepal birth certificate translation, finding a qualified translator to do the job is essential. Start by researching translators online and look for a translator who is certified, knowledgeable about the language, and has experience translating legal documents. It is essential to ensure the translator you hire is certified because they have the experience, knowledge, and qualifications to produce an accurate translation of your document. Additionally, it is best to use a professional service specializing in this type of translation when translating legal documents. This ensures that the translation is done correctly and accurately. You can also ask for referrals from family or friends who have used a translator. They can provide first-hand feedback on their experience with the translator and their success rate in producing accurate translations. This can give you peace of mind that your document will be translated correctly. It is also essential to look at the reviews of the translator you are considering hiring. Reading reviews from previous clients can help you determine if the translator is reliable and has a good reputation. If there are any complaints about the quality of their work or any other issues, you can consider these when deciding if they are the right translator for your needs. Once you’ve found a qualified translator, discussing your specific needs with them is essential. Make sure you discuss what type of translation you need, the turnaround time for the project, and any other details. This will ensure that you and the translator are on the same page and that you are both clear about the expectations for the project. Get Your Documents in Order Before you can get your Nepal birth certificate translated, it is essential to make sure you have all the necessary documents in order. To begin, gather the original document that needs to be translated and ensure it is complete and legible. This may include supporting documents or evidence such as a passport, marriage certificate, or other official identification. If the document requires additional signatures, complete them before sending it off for translation. Additionally, it is essential to ensure the paper is correctly formatted. This includes ensuring that all relevant information is provided, such as names, birth dates, birthplaces, and other vital details. Once your documents are ready, they will need to be translated into the language of your choice. A professional translator should be used to ensure accuracy and authenticity. Additionally, keep a copy of your original documents in case of any issues that may arise during the translation process. Make Sure the Translation is Accurate It is essential to make sure that your birth certificate translation is accurate. When you hire a translator, they should be able to provide you with a certified translation of your birth certificate. However, it would be best if you always double-check the accuracy of the translation before accepting it. One way to do this is to compare the translated document to the original document. If you do not speak or read the language of the original document, then you may need to find someone who does to help you. It is also essential to ensure that the details and information on the translated document match up to the original document so that the translator has correctly interpreted all of the information. Another way to check the accuracy of the translation is to ask the translator for references from previous clients. The more experience a translator has in translating birth certificates from Nepal, the better. Ask for references from previous clients and ensure their translations are accurate. Finally, it would help if you considered having the translated document reviewed by an independent source, such as a professional translator or a language expert. This will help ensure that the translation is accurate and up-to-date. A quality assurance check should also be conducted after any changes to the translation to guarantee its accuracy. By taking these steps, you can ensure that your birth certificate translation is accurate and meets all requirements. Obtain a Certification from the Embassy If you need a certified translation of your Nepal birth certificate, you must obtain a certification from the Nepalese embassy. This is done to verify that the translation accurately reflects the original document. You must submit a copy of your original birth certificate and the translation to the embassy to obtain a certification. Once the embassy receives your documents, they will review them and issue a certification that verifies the accuracy of the translation. This certification can be used legally, such as applying for a visa or residency in a foreign country. Before submitting your documents, make sure to check the specific requirements of the embassy. Each embassy may have different certification requirements, such as additional fees or other documents. Additionally, it is essential to note that the embassy may be unable to provide a certification if the translation does not meet their standards. Once you have obtained the certification from the embassy, you should make sure to keep it in a safe place. This certification proves that your translation accurately reflects your original birth certificate and can be used for any official purpose. Have the Translation Notarized The final step in getting your Nepal birth certificate translated is to have the translation notarized. Notarization is having an authorized person (a notary public) witness the signing of a document and certify it as being accurate and authentic. To have your translation notarized, you must bring your original document (or a certified copy of it) and the translated version to a notary public. The notary will compare the two versions to ensure the translation is accurate and complete before certifying it. When looking for a notary, it is essential to find one who is familiar with the language of your document and has experience notarizing translations. Once the notary has reviewed and certified your document, they will stamp or sign it to indicate their approval. Once complete, you will have a certified and notarized translation of your Nepal birth certificate. This will allow you to use the document in various contexts, including submitting it to the relevant authorities for official purposes. Fees The cost of getting a certified translation of a Nepal birth certificate depends on the type of translation you need and the amount of work involved. Professional translation services generally charge by the word or by the hour. For example, if you need a certified translation of a 1-page document with 400 words, you may be charged $20. There may be additional fees if you need an official translation that has been notarized. Notary fees typically range from $10-$50. It’s also possible that you may have to pay an embassy fee for a legal attestation. Getting a quote before engaging a translator ensures the cost is within your budget. Additionally, make sure the translator is qualified and experienced in the language of your document. A reputable translator should be able to provide you with samples of their past work. FAQ'S A certified Nepal birth certificate translation is an official document created by a professional translator and verified by a certification statement. It provides an accurate and official translation of a birth certificate issued in Nepal. Suppose you are applying for a visa, a passport, or any other official document in a country that does not speak Nepali. In that case, you will need a certified translation of your Nepal birth certificate. This will help the authorities understand the information in your document and verify its authenticity. Only a professional translator certified by a recognized organization can provide a certified Nepal birth certificate translation. It would be best if you are looking for a translator who is experienced in translating legal documents and has expertise in Nepali. You can search online for translation services or ask for recommendations from friends or family members who have had their documents translated. Make sure to choose a certified translator with experience in translating legal documents. You should provide the translator with a clear copy of your Nepal birth certificate and any specific requirements for the translation. You may also need to provide additional information, such as your name, date of birth, and place of birth. Read the full article

We all know surrogacy is wrong because it makes women's bodies into a product that could be sold or rented, and that should be enough reason why surrogacy should be abolished. But i'd like to expand on the reasons:
- There have been reports of poor treatment of surrogate mothers, with some agencies refusing to pay surrogates if they do not obey strict requirements or if they miscarry.
- The requirements for surrogate mothers are mostly insane. They must follow strict diets and physical activities, allow the buyers to control and decide their sexual life, they must have abortions if the buyers suddenly change their minds and decide so, sometimes they can’t even leave the place of residency agreed on the contract. Some of them are submitted to fertility treatments and unsafe medical prescriptions.
- Surrogate mothers must agree to things like: “the surrogate must be married and be a mother of at least one healthy child, be medically and psychologically fit, abstain from cigarettes, alcohol and any other drugs during pregnancy and must agree to give up her parental right, after the baby is born. Her husband must also pass tests. The couple must present a medical report on their health, the results of semen analysis showing the husband is fertile, a laboratory report on their blood type and their marriage certificate. The agency arranges the contract, life insurance for the surrogate’s family (should she die during pregnancy or childbirth) and life insurance or a will for the child should the (contracting) couple die before the child is born.”
- If these people’s countries don’t allow surrogacy, they often travel to other countries where the law about it is less strict. Especially third world countries like India, Thailand, Cambodia and Nepal.
- Following last point, surrogacy mostly targets poor and vulnerable women in thirld world countries who can’t find other ways to gain a basic income and therefore decide to use their bodies and sell them. It’s the same reasoning behind prostitution.
- It’s literally selling human life. Not only selling women’s bodies but also the babies they birth. Selling humans is illegal in most cases, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be in this case.
- It’s not “body rent” or “womb rent”, it’s the renting of people. you can’t separate a body from the person. You are your body. When your body dies, you die as well.
- Also in this case the woman is deprived of all rights, can’t even be called mother, and the consumer has all the respect because they’re paying for “the product”. We all know true consent can’t be bought.
- Some people try to excuse some surrogacy cases as “altruistic”, because the women in question are serving as a surrogate for free only because they want to help other people who can’t have babies. but the reality is this is highly unlikely to happen. and even if it did happen, these women are still in severe risk of countless dangers that come with pregnancy, even risking death. all of that for a child that isn’t even hers. so it’s not something that should be normalized
- Sometimes the babies are born with an illness that couldn’t be foreseen during the pregnancy, sometimes they’re born premature, or sometimes they’re simply not what the contracting people wanted. So they’re abandoned.
- 500 surrogate babies were abandoned in Ukraine last year because the parents couldn’t cross the border due to covid (video on source 6).
- Others may disagree with this point. But there are studies that have shown babies bond with their mothers after birth. Which affects the baby and the mother psychologically and physically for different reasons. Also the baby never consented to being bought and given to strangers. Money doesn’t mean anything to this baby.
- After the baby is given away, the mother is left alone to handle her trauma and psychological or physical problems caused by this process. The contracting family only gave their money while she was creating “the perfect baby” but once that’s done, they don’t care anymore.
- Most times when it’s an heterosexual couple doing the contract, the contracting father is the one who has all the rights. And the consent of the infertile woman who is going to raise this child for the most part isn’t even considered as a requirement.

question of the day: is Tenzing Tharkay’s legal...
they didn’t have birth certificates but they did have baptismal registers, marriage records etc. - parish records would have been used for that purpose, at least in England I think. Was Tharkay ever baptized?
probably! but I don’t know where he was born, even! his mom was from Nepal, or maybe Tibet? his dad was over there for some period of time, from...Scotland maybe? there was “some irregularity about the marriage”, god only knows if his mom is even still alive given how little she’s present in the text, he spent enough time in England as a child to be completely fluent in both language and culture, and after his father’s death (which happened...when???) the rest of his white family tried to get him disinherited. that’s all I got!
why are there so many pages about dragon battles and so few pages on genealogy and family infighting, that’s what I want to know

Social and Cultural Drivers for Teen Pregnancy: Establishing the Grounds for Pregnancy
When discussing teenage pregnancy amongst South Asian girls, it is important to understand the premise for their pregnancies. Many of these teenage girls who become pregnant do not happen to become pregnant as the result of a short-term relationship, or brief hookup. Rather, the majority of the teenage girls who become pregnant are, in fact, married. This is because pregnancy is not common outside of wedlock in these culturally and religiously conservative countries. According to a 2020 article exploring the trends, inequalities and drivers of EM and ECB, “in India, less than 1% of pregnancies occur out of wedlock in contrast with more than 40% in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden for example” (Scott et al. 2020). In general, pre-marital sex is considered disgraceful, but pre-marital pregnancy is heavily considered taboo and is stigmatized throughout South Asian countries. For example, “unmarried pregnant women in a similar setting in South India are often advised to give up their children for adoption in order to continue their lives and become ‘respected’, married women” (Jordal, Wijewardena & Olsson 2013). This makes it clear that marriage is a crucial stepping stone in the lives of South Asian women, especially in terms of family planning. Furthermore, it establishes the grounds for most teenage pregnancies in South Asia, which is that most teenagers who become pregnant are first and foremost, married.
It has already been established that the rates of teenage pregnancy in South Asia are quite high, and that most teenage pregnancies occur amongst married girls. This implies that girls are also married at extremely young ages. This is due to several factors, such as SES and educational background aforementioned, but also some unique cultural and societal reasons as well. For one, there are few barriers that stand in the way of early marriage in South Asian countries. Political laws regarding marriage permit early marriage in several South Asian countries, particularly in ones where Shariah law may be used to “trump laws that require a higher age requirement for marriage. This, in turn, indicates how culture and religion play a role in encouraging early marriage. For example, in most South Asian countries, the minimum age for a girl to marry is 18. However, in the Muslim-majority countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan, the age requirement is significantly lower.
According to an international report published by the International Center for Research on Womens’ Health (ICRWH) in 2012, girls can legally get married at the age of:
Afghanistan: 15 (with her fathers discretion), otherwise at 16 Pakistan: 16 Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka: 18
However, these marriage laws are very weak and hardly enforced (International Center for Research on Womens’ Health 2012). At the time of marriage, it is neccessary for the age of the bride and groom to be confirmed in order to ascertain that they meet the age requirement. However, officials can frequently be bribed or lied to, which allows the cases of under-aged marriage to go unnoticed. Thus, marriages often occur at earlier ages. Unicef reports that roughly ½ of all South Asian women are married before the age of 18 and approximately ⅕ are married before the age of 15 (”Child Marriage” 2019). Thus, it is clear that these laws do not dedicate much, and the consequences of breaking them are not dire.
‘“The kazi [Muslim marriage registrar] came here to perform my marriage,” Soraya A., age 18, who married at age 15, told Human Rights Watch. “He said, ‘She’s not 18 so you need to change that [birth] certificate.’ We got it changed and then I got married.” Soraya explained that her family had her birth certificate changed by the Union Parishad (local council) office and paid an official 500 taka [$6.49] to change it“’

‘“The kazi came to my house to do my marriage. He asked my age and my parents said 18. He didn’t ask for a document,” said Mala D., who married at age 13.”’
