Val-Cula Daily - May 5
Val's random thoughts as she revisits Dracula Daily (An excellent choice if you missed it the first time around). Its a long day for Jonathan Harker, and one of the more interesting ones, so bear with the long post!
--------------------
AKA: Adventures on public transit.
Once again, Jonathan's delightful business trip in which nothing will go wrong (aside from some strange behaviour from the innkeeper the night before) begins with another delicious sounding dining experience:
I dined on what they called "robber steak"—bits of bacon, onion, and beef, seasoned with red pepper, and strung on sticks and roasted over the fire, in the simple style of the London cat's meat! The wine was Golden Mediasch, which produces a queer sting on the tongue, which is, however, not disagreeable. I had only a couple of glasses of this, and nothing else.
-------------
A driver comes to pick up our traveler, and the ominous conversation does not set off any red flags:
I quietly got my polyglot dictionary from my bag and looked them out. I must say they were not cheering to me, for amongst them were "Ordog"—Satan, "pokol"—hell, "stregoica"—witch, "vrolok" and "vlkoslak"—both of which mean the same thing, one being Slovak and the other Servian for something that is either were-wolf or vampire. (Mem., I must ask the Count about these superstitions)
Yeah, this seems like you're in for a fine time Jonathan. Nothing to worry about here. That said, I really like Jonathan carting around this little phrasebook. Its cool to see that, even in the 1880s, some tourist trends remain the same! I also like the confusion over vampire/werewolf. The two have quite an intertwined history, and those who have followed my work know I have an opinion on these things!
----------------
Jonathan goes on a lovely little coach ride, and just continues to be a pleasant person so happy to be on this little business trip. In many adaptations, Transylvania seems to be always portrayed as this perpetually dark, gloomy place. But, as Jonathan remarks:
Before us lay a green sloping land full of forests and woods, with here and there steep hills, crowned with clumps of trees or with farmhouses, the blank gable end to the road. There was everywhere a bewildering mass of fruit blossom—apple, plum, pear, cherry; and as we drove by I could see the green grass under the trees spangled with the fallen petals.
Its interesting to me at how colourful and picturesque Stoker's work is, given assumptions about it. People made a big deal about bright, colourful horror like Midsommar, but its present and strong here in the quintessential Gothic horror.
-----------
Jonathan's journey on the Transylvanian bus remains a beautiful journey through the countryside, even as his fellow passengers and drivers start to get nervous as his destination approaches. Dracula's coach appears dramatically, and gives us an early glimpse of how Drac, for all of his faults, knows how to make a hell of an entrance:
A calèche, with four horses, drove up behind us, overtook us, and drew up beside the coach. I could see from the flash of our lamps, as the rays fell on them, that the horses were coal-black and splendid animals. They were driven by a tall man, with a long brown beard and a great black hat, which seemed to hide his face from us. I could only see the gleam of a pair of very bright eyes, which seemed red in the lamplight, as he turned to us.
I also love this exchange:
One of my companions whispered to another the line from Burger's "Lenore":—
"Denn die Todten reiten schnell"— ("For the dead travel fast.")
The strange driver evidently heard the words, for he looked up with a gleaming smile.
Its such a smug move and I love it.
-------------
The blue flames are one of those cool concepts that sort of vanish in adaptation. Once Jonathan switches to the new carriage, his driver keeps stopping the coach as blue lights appear alongside the road, running off into the woods and marking the spots with rocks. There's something really cool about this whole bit, a glimpse at the supernatural world beyond the main focus of Dracula and his vampiric ilk. Its not explained at this point, but its just a really cool bit of worldbuilding that hints that there's more supernatural stuff in the world. The driver also displays some Wolf Master traits here, which I'm sure I'll touch upon on a less eventful day.
-------------
Jonathan has his first experience with both Castle Dracula and the Count himself (at least, the Count presenting himself openly). Its interesting to see the description of Dracula in the book vs. the iconic look of Bela Lugosi.
His face was a strong—a very strong—aquiline, with high bridge of the thin nose and peculiarly arched nostrils; with lofty domed forehead, and hair growing scantily round the temples but profusely elsewhere. His eyebrows were very massive, almost meeting over the nose, and with bushy hair that seemed to curl in its own profusion. The mouth, so far as I could see it under the heavy moustache, was fixed and rather cruel-looking, with peculiarly sharp white teeth; these protruded over the lips, whose remarkable ruddiness showed astonishing vitality in a man of his years. For the rest, his ears were pale, and at the tops extremely pointed; the chin was broad and strong, and the cheeks firm though thin. The general effect was one of extraordinary pallor.
Drac has some odd behaviours here, but is remarkably cordial and professional. We also learn that Dracula apparently makes a good roast chicken. We never learn if Dracula himself or one of the brides is the one who actually cooks, but the fact remains that someone in the castle did. I really love the image of Dracula working in a kitchen with an apron and chef's hat to make his guest meal that Jonathan raves about (Jonathan has yet to have a bad meal on his trip and has been collecting recipes. I hope he got the chicken recipe from Drac.)

[ad_1] It’s a bond forged on ice that warms the heart. In early 2023, 15-year-old Ryley Budd raised $5,000 to help send fellow goalie Harrison Markin and his SuperHEROS teammates to their first tournament in Ontario.SuperHEROS provides a space for young people with physical and cognitive challenges to play the game they love.“My favorite part of the tournament was that we won three games and only lost one game and we won gold medals,” Markin said. “(I liked) being the goalie and making glove saves like Dustin Wolf.”Budd and Calgary Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura welcomed Harrison into hockey’s goalie club and gave him the confidence to strap on the pads- which are now battered with puck marks from games and practice. Story continues below advertisement “Self-confidence through the roof,” John Markin, Harrison’s dad, said. “He loves playing. We’ll play mini sticks and I’ll take shots at him in the garage. I had him rollerblading last week for some dryland training because that’s all he wanted to do.“He’s been looking forward to seeing Ryley all summer, just grinning from ear to ear.”On Wednesday, Ryley and Harrison reunited for the first time since the tournament for a special skills session.“What SuperHEROS does helping kids and giving them the chance to play the sport that I love, that’s really special,” Budd said. “So it was something that I wanted to be a part of trying to help out with. Helping has always been important to me. and I think I could really make a difference with this. I was so happy with how it went and this year I want to continue that and try and help even more.”Budd, a Saskatoon Blades prospect, is now aiming to raise $10,000 for SuperHEROS– and already has two sponsors on board who will donate money for every save and shutout he makes this season. He was recently named Hockey Alberta’s Player of the Year, which earned him a $1,000 donation to the cause through his former association, the Calgary Northstars. Story continues below advertisement “I want to keep this going as long as my hockey career lasts,” Budd added. “I want to try and make a career out of hockey and this is something that I want to continue along with it. I think we can bring more into the sport than just the game and this is a big piece to me.”HEROS Hockey executive director Kevin Hodgson says that’s a game-changing amount of money.“This year, we’re going to bring all of our SUPERHEROS from Western Canada together in Calgary,” Hodgson said.“Ryley helped us get 15 kids to a tournament, or at least helping us get five, six teams worth of superheroes to Calgary to have their own tournament, which will just launch that appetite to then want to go and do other stuff in other places. It’s just going to create more opportunities and more spaces for kids to play.“He’s hoping to play for the Saskatoon Blades. Well, we’re working on putting a SuperHEROS team in Saskatoon so he’ll be able to bring SuperHEROS with him when his time comes.” &copy 2023 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. Chapter 7 - Family, duty, honor
“Bran.” Maester Luwin called, as he pointed at somewhere in the map in front of them. Ylina looked back from the targets in front of her and smiled at Bran, as the boy sighed.
“The Iron Islands.” He answered, as Maester Luwin nodded.
As her younger brother studied and her older brother was busy again with his duties as lord, Ylina decided to spend that time with Theon training archery together as they used to do when they were younger behind her mother’s back. When Theon’s arrow hit bull’s eye again, he gave her a smirk, to which she scoffed, pushing him aside to stand where he was before to shot her own arrow.
“Sigil — a kraken. Words. — ‘We do not sow’.”
“Lords?”
“The Greyjoys.”
“Famed for their skills at archery, navigation and lovemaking.” Theon spoke up, with a wink in Ylina’s direction as the girl only scoffed and let her arrow fly, hitting the middle of the target as well and throwing her fiery red hair from over her shoulder as her eyes met his, full of playful challenge.
“And failed rebellions.” Maester Luwin spoke up, as Theon huffed at him annoyed. Ylina giggled as the man grabbed another arrow and the Maester pointed at somewhere else in the map.
“Sigil - a stag, a crowned stag now that Robert's king.” Bran answered easily.
“Good.” Maester Luwin nodded.
“Words - ‘Ours is the fury’. Lords - the Baratheons.”
“Mm-hm.” The Maester nodded, before pointing at another point in the map.
“The Westerlands.” Bran said, as Ylina shot another arrow. “Sigil - a lion. Words - ‘A Lannister always pays his debts’.”
"No. A common saying, but not their official motto.” Maester Luwin corrected.
“Lords - the Lannisters.”
When Bran ignored the Maester, Ylina turned around from looking at the targets in front of her to look at her brother instead.
“We're still on their words.” Maester Luwin insisted. Ylina noticed how Bran kept playing with the fish pin in his hands and markin the wooden table to avoid looking at anyone.
“I don't know them.” He mumbled, clearly annoyed.
“You do know them. Think.”
"Unbowed, unbent, unbroken.”
"That's House Martell.”
"Righteous in wrath.”
"House Hornwood.”
"Family, duty, honor.”
"Those are Tully words - your mother's.” The Maester said, before sighing lowly. “Are we playing a game?”
“Family, duty, honor.” Bran repeated, as Ylina watched him closely. “Is that the right order?”
“You know it is.” The Maester nodded.
“Family comes first?”
At that, Maester Luwin lifted his eyes just slightly to meet Ylina’s. When the girl sighed, unsure of what to say, he spoke up.
“Your mother had to leave Winterfell to protect the family.”
“How can she protect the family if she's not with her family?” Bran countered.
“Your mother sat by your bed for three weeks while you slept.”
“And then she left!”
“When you were born, I was the one who pulled you from your mother.” Maester Luwin said. As Theon nudged her slightly, Ylina’s eyes left Bran for a second, only to shoot another arrow. “I placed you in her arms. From that moment until the moment she dies, she will love you. Absolutely. Fiercely.”
At that, Ylina lowered her bow and turned to look at Bran with a smile. When the boy looked at her, she saw the hurt in his eyes and felt her heart clenching in her chest.
“Why did she leave, Lina?” He asked, as the girl sighed.
“I told you already. I can't tell you.” She answered softly.
“But she will be home soon.” Maester Luwin tried to assure.
“Do you know where she is now? Today?” Bran asked, as Luwin gave Ylina a look to which the girl simply smiled with a shrug of her shoulders. Bran could be only ten years old, but he was smarter than most kids at his age, that’s for sure.
“No, I don't.”
“Then how can you promise me she'll be home soon?”
“Sometimes I worry you're too smart for your own good.”
At that, they all fell silent until Theon’s arrow hit the target with a low thud. Glancing at her husband with a smile, she missed the way Bran sighed and stared longingly at them both.
“I'll never shoot another arrow.” He sighed, causing Ylina to frown and look at him.
“And where is that written?” She asked.
“You need legs to work a bow.” He responded with a small pout of his lips.
With a smile, Ylina walked toward them and pulled herself up to sit on the table beside Bran.
“If the saddle Lord Tyrion designed actually works, you could learn to shoot a bow from horseback.” She said, waving her hand at Theon as he threw an arrow at her.
“Really?” He asked, his eyes shining and a smile playing on his lips. She nodded down at him, preparing the arrow in her bow.
“Dothraki boys learn when they're four years old.” She said, letting the arrow fly only for it to hit bull’s eye yet again. With a wink in Bran direction, she watched as he chuckled at her antics. “Why shouldn't you?”
***
When Bran and Maester Luwin left, Ylina sighed, dropping her bow arm down and jumping slightly at the sound of Theon's arrows hitting the target. The man chuckled at her.
"Bran is just being a kid, Lily. No need to worry." He assured, pulling another arrow from the quiver beside him. "When Lady Stark returns he will be the same happy, annoying little brother we've always known."
"Yeah, well." She nodded slightly. "Still, Mother left a long time ago. She should be home by now."
"Maybe there was a complication in the road and had to change routes, love. I'm sure she's fine. She's with Ser Rodrik after all."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Theon let his arrow fly. Ylina watched as, for once, it didn't hit bull's eye. With a smirk, Ylina placed her bow down and got up, causing Daria to get up as well. Passing by Theon, Ylina placed her hand on his chest and patted it gently as the man looked down at her with raised eyebrows.
"Keep practicing, my love. You are almost good."
Theon scoffed with a smile, grabbing Ylina by the wrist and pulling her toward him. With a squeal, she stumbled back, only to be held up by her husband. Already used to their antics, Daria simply watched them whining lowly. Ylina laughed.
"Almost good?" Theon repeated. "I'm far better than you, Lily."
"That's debatable." She smirked, throwing her arms around his neck.
"No, it's not. It's a fact."
Rolling her eyes, Ylina smiled up at Theon before pulling him down and placing a kiss to his lips. Pulling away, Ylina smiled at him and took a step back from his grip.
"I'm going to go talk to Robb." She said, as Theon nodded. "I'll be back soon."
Lifting the ends of her dress, she ignored the dirt on them as she walked inside the Castle. Looking down at Daria, her wolf lifted her icy blue eyes to meet hers.
"Sometimes, it's a good thing Mother is not home, huh?" She asked lowly as Daria wriggled her tail.
They stopped in front of the closed doors, guarded by two of her Father's men and they bowed their heads at the girl.
"My lady." They said, as she nodded at them.
"Could I talk to my brother?" She asked.
"Lord Stark is at meeting at the moment, m'lady." One of the men said.
"I'll be quick."
Exchanging a glance, the two men gave in, pushing the doors open as Ylina thanked them lowly and walked inside the room, where Robb was with one of their Maesters.
"Lily." Her brother said, once he noticed her presence, getting up from his seat.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I have to talk to you. In private, if you please."
When both siblings turned to the Maester, the man nodded, getting up from his seat and leaving the room with a bow in their direction.
"My lord. My lady."
As soon as he was out, Robb turned to his sister, grabbing her hand in his and looking down at her with his bright blue eyes.
"What's the matter?" He asked, already so used to being needed only when things were bad that Ylina felt bad for putting even more trouble in his mind.
But she helped him with his problems, so it was fair she did the same to her. They were family after all, and if they weren't there to look after one another, who would?
"Why is Mother taking so long?" She asked, causing Robb to chuckle.
"Usually is Rickon the one to ask me that." He said, as Ylina shrugged.
"He asks me too. And Bran as well. You know he's quite hurt Mother left and he woke up without her, right?"
"I know." Robb sighed, squeezing Ylina's hand on his as if only to assure she was still there, with him. "But I can't do anything about it, Lily. And I know Mother is taking longer than expected, but I'm sure…"
"You are sure she's fine." She finished his sentence with a roll of her eyes. "If Mother was fine, she'd be home already. Or she would've at least sent us a bloody raven. We don't know if she's even alive, Robb!"
"Of course she is, don't say that." The older boy shook his head before pulling his sister in for a hug. He could feel the girl clinging into him as if her life depended on it, but, if he was being honest, he was needing her just as much. "Mother will come home soon, you'll see. Everything will be just fine. And don't worry about the boys. I'll put them to bed tonight."
"No, it's fine. You have a lot of things to do. I can..."
"Nothing is as important as family, Lily. I can tell making sure the boys are happy and healthy is getting you tired. Take the night for yourself. It'll be fine, love."
At that, Ylina smiled, getting up on the tips of her toes to place a kiss to her brother's cheek. Before she could even thank him properly, however, Maester Luwin walked inside the room with a smile. Exchanging confused glances, the two Starks turned to the man.
"Maester?" Robb urged him to talk.
"Bran's new saddle is ready, my lord." He said, causing Ylina to smile.
"Oh, Bran will be so happy to hear."
Smiling down at her sister, Robb nodded at her.
"Go fetch him, then." He said, as she squealed in pure delight. "Train with him and see if he can ride. I'll be joining you both soon enough."
***
“Okay. Seems strong enough.” Ylina smiled as she tightened the leather straps around Bran’s legs. “Don’t let go of the reins, though. And if you feel like you are slipping, you…”
“I can handle a little bit of horse riding, Lina. I’m a big boy. Besides, we’ve been doing this for days.” The young boy interrupted his sister with a half-smile as Ylina rolled her eyes.
“Fine.” She laughed, before letting her hand slip from Bran’s legs and into the body of the black horse. “Storm, take it slow.”
And with a tap of her hand, the horse took off. Ylina smiled slightly as she leaned against a tree, watching as Bran cheered and laughed, finally being able to ride a horse alone again after his fall. He had a huge smile in his face and Ylina swore she had never seen such joy coming from him. He was enjoying feeling like a normal kid again more than she thought he would.
As she stood there, she could see Theon and Robb sat in a log a few feet away from her. Still with a smile on her lips, she locked eyes with Theon just before the man started talking with her brother. She picked up her bow and arrows and Daria came out of the woods in a second, standing by her side, probably hoping they would hunt. Ylina approached the boys and when she could finally hear them, she took an arrow from her quiver.
“I’m not discussing these types of matters with my sister around.” Robb said, interrupting his best friend.
Theon raised an eyebrow and Ylina scoffed. Drawing her arrow, she let it fly, hitting a rabbit a few meters away from them. It died with a squeak, and Daria wasted no time in running for it.
“Don’t be stupid, Robb.” She said, turning to look at him as she fixed her braid slightly. “We both know I’m better at battle strategy than you are.”
“We are not discussing battle, Lily.” Robb sighed.
“Theon’s right, though.” She protested, kneeling to the floor to get the rabbit from Daria and pet her as praise. “The Lannisters did hurt our father.”
“You want me to march into Casterly Rock?”
“You’re not a boy anymore.” Theon answered, before Ylina could. “They attacked your father; they’ve already started the war. It’s your duty to represent your House when your father can’t.”
Not sparing a glance to Ylina, Robb spoke up again.
“And it’s not your duty. Because it’s not your house.”
“Robb.” Ylina warned through gritted teeth.
The boy ignored her and got up as Ylina shook her head. She was about to say something else but Robb was quicker.
“Where’s Bran?”
Looking around, she noticed her younger brother was nowhere to be seen.
“I don’t know.” Theon said, also getting up. “It’s not my House.”
And with that he was off. Ylina wanted to go after him, but decided that finding Bran was more important at the time.
“Daria.”
And without another word, the wolf was out, sniffing the air as Ylina and Robb followed her closely. When they found Bran in his horse, being attacked by about four people, Robb pulled Ylina to stand behind him. She rolled her eyes, but kept an arrow ready either way.
“Drop the knife.” He said. “Let him go and I’ll let you live.”
After exchanging a glance, one of the men charged for Robb while another came in Ylina’s direction. As Robb fought his opponent, Ylina managed to put an arrow through her own enemy’s shoulder. He screamed, but kept charging at her, only to be stopped by Daria, who jumped over Ylina and right into the man’s chest, knocking him to the ground. Ylina walked closer and shot an arrow through his throat. Before she could do much else, she felt her eyes widening as she saw Robb with his hand through the only woman in the group’s hair and his blade in another. He could easily kill her, but stopped when he saw the bigger man of the group with Bran in his hands.
“Drop the weapons.” He said.
“No.” Bran mumbled. “Don’t.”
Exchanging a glance, Ylina and Robb let their weapons down. Robb still had his hands on the woman’s hair and Daria snarled. The man pointed his knife at her.
“Control the wolf.” He said.
“She won’t do anything unless I tell her to.” Ylina answered.
The man seemed a bit suspicious, but he barely had the time to think about it, because, suddenly, an arrow was shot through his heart and he fell to the ground, only to reveal Theon behind him. Wasting no time, Ylina and Robb ran to Bran as Theon pointed an arrow to the woman.
“Are you alright?” Ylina asked, as she watched Robb pick Bran up and inspected the small cut in his leg closely.
“Yes. It doesn’t hurt.” He assured.
“Though little lad.” Theon said. “In the Iron Island they say you’re not a man until you’ve killed your first enemy. Well done.”
“Have you lost your mind?” Robb asked. “What if you’ve missed?”
“He would’ve killed you and cut Bran’s throat.”
“You don’t have the right!”
“To what? To save your brother’s life? It was the only thing to do so I did it.”
Without saying a word, Ylina walked from Robb’s side and toward the woman. She looked down at Daria and the wolf made a small sound in the back of her throat. Before Ylina could do much else, the woman spoke up.
“Give me my life, my lady, and I’m yours.” She promised.
Reaching out, she placed her hand on Theon’s arm, making him disarm the bow he was aiming at her. As she cried out her gratitude, Theon stared at Ylina.
“What are you doing?” He asked.
“She didn’t want to kill him.” She answered. “She wanted the gold. We’ll keep her alive.”

she heard the story one too many times. of course she did, it's her people's story. there are two wolves that live inside one self: a kind, loving, juste, mercifull one and a selfish, hateful, liying, greedy one. they fight. only one can win. and it's up to each and every human to tip the balance to the good wolf's favor.
her family thought her too young to understand. too out of the real world. disconnected. if they worried they didn't show. and the wory never lasted. she's got a big heart, she feels so deeply, she fights for what is right. if she ever made a wrong step, acted in the fabor of the bad wolf, her family softly pushed her back on the right path. gentle words, encouraging smiles and long heart to heart talks. she righted her ways immediatly.
but the young hero understood more than she let out. her wolves, she felt them fight. and with a clear, conscious mind, she'd choose which one to side with. her outbursts weren't outbursts at all. in her big, deep heart she felt she should aid the bad wolf from time to time. when she met things that weren't right. when she was treated in ways that were not fair.
perhaps the worst part trully was that she didn't feel bad. no guilt. no shame. no remorse.
the young hero navigated these two sides of the same coin – love and hatred of the same power. as she grew, she learned to conceal the later more and more. showing her ugly, sharp teeth – out for blood, out for pain – less and less. chosing her moments more carefully. more selectively.
it may be that she matured and her patience, as it was bond to happen, grew with her. or it may be that she got tired of fighting and raging inside.
either way, when a proud villain stepped in her town and killed her family – among other innocents –, she let it all loose. she trained and waged battle upon battle towards the villain and their troops until, finally, she got to face the villain themselves.
all the years of bleeding and drawing blood, all the scratches, cuts and wounds markin her body, all the pain amd the loss and the hate were coming to an end. but her soul was a star who shines bright. and just like a star, it has to explode before it can shrink back down.
so the hero smirked as she pressed the tip of her weapon under the villain's chin. she spit them between their eyes and stared down at the kneeling villain with so much raw fury and agony it made them finaly understand this hero won't spare their life.
so, the pleas for mercy begun. but the hero ignored it all. she let them talk her ear off. a false hint to mercy that would never be granted. she let her features soften. her smirk fade into a poor sblance of a sad smile. she leaned in, touching her forehead to the villain's.
their eyes sparkled with hope. buds of tears glimmering with mad joy. it remained frozen on their face as the blood begin to wooble in waves out of the open wound. before they could register the pain, or the hole in their body, the hero's face twisted again.
right before they died, the villain heard her whisper something in their ear:
"there is no changing my mind about you, murderer. no good enough reason to let you live. my family's death looked painful, though the doctors say it wasn't. i hope yours is."
Prompt #12
Hero’s face shifted into something dark and ugly as Villain kneeled captured and bound at their feet.
“Who said I was fighting for truth and justice? My goal has always been revenge.”

CANTLON: (12/13) UCONN HUSKY MAKES A WJC TEAM
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - UCONN’s Ryan Tverberg was selected to join the Canadian team and officially became the sixth UCONN player to represent a country on a World Junior Championship team. Tverberg heads off to Banff, Alberta, for the WJC camp. They’ll have three warmup exhibition games starting on December 19 against Switzerland, December 20 against Sweden. These WJC games will be played at the Peavey Mart Centaurium, the second site of the WJC. December 22 Canada’s entry in the WJC will play a pre-Christmas affair against Russia at Rogers Place in Edmonton that will air on the NHL Network. TOURNAMENT BEGINNING The tournament begins on December 26 (Canadian Boxing Day) with a Group A meeting against the Czech Republic in Edmonton. The puck drop of all WJC games is 7:00 PM. All games will air on the NHL Network who will pick up the TSN feed. Tverberg will be joined by several New York Rangers prospects, including returning goalie and ex-Hartford Wolf Pack, Dylan Garand of the Kamloops Blazers (WHL). Another ex-Pack from last year is center Will Cuylle of the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). There will also be Jack Finley, who was recently traded from the Spokane (WA) Chiefs (WHL) to the Winnipeg Ice (WHL). Finley is the son of ex-Pack, Ranger, and Springfield Indian Jeff Finley and is presently a scout with Winnipeg. Another son of an ex-Indian is Ridley Greig from the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), the son of former Hartford Whaler and Springfield Indian; Mark Greig also made the team. The Canadian WJC team was shut out 3-0 by a group of Canadian University All-Stars in their first of two exhibition games at Markin MacPhail Centre-WinSports Arena in Calgary on Saturday. MORE TEAM MEMBERS Two names of note from the Canadian University All-Star squad in two defensemen. Nolan Volcan of the University of Alberta Golden Bears (CWUAA) is the nephew of former Whaler Michael “Mickey” Volcan and ex-Wolf Pack Tysen Helgesen. He is a senior for the Mt Royal University Cougars (CWUAA). While not getting a point, Tverberg opened his coach’s eyes and solidified his chances of making the team while playing on a line with Elliot “Destroyer” Desnoyers of the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and Joshua Roy Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL). “I liked his game,” Head Coach Dave Cameron said to the Canadian Press in the Toronto Star, “He’s tenacious on the puck. That’s his biggest asset. He’s around the puck. I thought he had a couple of offensive chances he whiffed on. High energy. Good reads around the puck. Good on the forecheck, good on battles.” On Sunday afternoon, the team won 7-2 with thirteen players registering points, including Tverberg, who recorded his with a third-period power play goal. Cuylle was patrolling the left side, with the center being the Washington Capitals’ number one pick, Hendrix Lapierre. Helgesen scored one of the two goals for the University All-Stars. BIG RECRUIT HEADING TO STORRS UCONN scored a significant recruit with a familiar last name in New England hockey. Forward Mason Kesselring of Cushing (MA) Academy is 6’3 and 180lbs. He made a verbal commitment to the Huskies for 2022-23. Casey Kesselring, Mason’s father, was a star in Hockey East in the mid-1990s with Merrimack. He also had a five-year ECHL career. The New Hampshire native is also the younger brother of former Northeastern star Michael Kesselring. He had a short-lived minor pro career with the Bakersfield Condors (AHL). Casey has been a prep school coach at Pinkerton (NH) Academy (2003-2009) and New Hampton (NH) School (2014-2019), where Michael is the school’s all-time leading point-getter. Mason spent a year there before going to Cushing. Casey was also an assistant for half a season of the CT Yankees in 2009 before taking the job with Pinkerton. Casey is presently the head coach of the Northern (MA) Cyclones 18-AAA team and a New England scout with Fargo (USHL). He has previously worked with the Youngstown (OH) Phantoms (USHL). Perks his ears up at the odd topic being talked about and smiling a bit, “I for one isn’t against havin’ one in bed like that, unless wantin’ a wolf for a lover or something along those lines... heh.” letting out a purr at times when amused of things and looking like a wolf that be wagging their tail, “Sure I like holdin’ tails like any other wolf but I like it a bit rough, markin’ the skin with bites and nails that sort of thing. Not to mention bein’ prepared for knots since, hoo boy... when one gets a wolf riled up there’s no stoppin’ em’ really.“ knowing that all too well from experience and chuckling to himself when thinking of things there.
